A newer version, Cala TrioTM Cala-Trio is FDA-cleared and is available with a prescription from your doctor The device is worn on the wrist and applies electrical stimulation to the median and radial nerves someone with a DBS system in place is not able to use Cala One or Cala Trio A randomized controlled trial of Cala One showed mixed results self-rated improvements on activities of daily living were 50% in the treatment group and 27% in the control group electrical stimulation is applied to the skin’s surface to stimulate the motor nerves which carry information from the brain to the muscles to trigger muscle contractions A number of these systems are under development and some are closer to market in Europe than they are in the US In this type of system the device contains elements which absorb the extra energy created by the tremor to dampen the movement of the tremor These systems are purely mechanical and do not need an electrical supply There are three systems that utilize this type of approach There are no published clinical trial data yet for these devices although the manufacturers report that their internal testing demonstrates efficacy Other energy dissipation systems are under development as well The three systems that are currently available are: Tremelo – this system uses a technology called tuned mass damper technology in which springs are attached to weights embedded in a wearable sleeve the spring makes the mass move back and forth This system (which is similar to systems that stabilize skyscrapers and bridges from wind and earthquakes) thereby dampens the energy of the tremor Steadi-Two (Steadi-One was the first version of this system) — uses magnetic tuned mass damper technology to reduce tremor a disc surrounded by magnets is embedded in a sleeve Whenever the hand moves in one direction due to tremor thereby counteracting the movement of the tremor Readi-Steadi® — is a customizable weighted glove which can help dissipate tremor In these systems a wearable device contains elements that sense the tremor and then exert an active force to counteract the tremor In this system, gyroscopes are used to counteract the forces generated by tremor. The GyroGloveTM uses multiple miniature gyroscopes in a wearable glove It is currently under development and cannot be purchased yet In addition to devices worn directly on the wrist utensils have been designed to help people with tremor eat more easily weighted utensils can help to dampen tremor and many of these types of products are available for purchase Liftware SteadyTM is a product that works by generating movement of the utensil in the direction opposite of the detected tremor So far there is a small amount of clinical trial evidence supporting the use of Liftware wearable devices for tremor suppression have minimal to low risk of side effects and may be good options for some people whose tremors are not well controlled with medication (having had DBS surgery limits a person’s use of the tremor suppression systems that utilize electrical stimulation If you are interested in trying a wearable tremor suppression device talk with your doctor to determine if one of these options may be a good choice for you We anticipate that additional clinical trial data will help us better understand the potential of these devices in the treatment plan of Parkinson’s disease tremor We look forward to more research in this area and more devices coming to the market so that people living with PD can have more effective options to help them live life to the fullest despite their PD vessel for connecting with others – it supersedes language It is a method that has brought the farthest ends of the world closer together “Honest Man (DJ Tremelo Remix)” and “Something To Fk With (DJ Tremelo Remix)” embody that very sentiment Matell’s passion for music has always been clear there were few people who influenced him as much as actor and rapper A handful of conversations fueled by a deep connection with music between Carter and Matell made the Colorado-based artist want to release the singles now it became a fire that will burn forever within Matell Matell reflects on his light-hearted conversations with Carter “We tossed around ideas and talked about other things along the way My heart goes out to his son Prince Lyric Carter.” Matell’s collaborative effort embody the spirit of Carter’s music and general take on life Matell wrote these songs exclusively for Aaron to sing and produce on his Rakkaus Records “‘Honest Man’ came from a conversation about people taking you seriously Carter told me he would stay home and work on his music despite what people said – and that’s where I got that concept.” ““Something To Fk With” came from our messages online We would go back and forth writing instrumentals to lyrics or vice versa and I decide to change one of those compositions to reflect the current climate in the news and the chaos in the world.” Matell has appeared as a featured performer in tribute to iconic jazz singer Nancy Wilson at the BMA Music Awards and as a special guest on Minnie Foxx’s Los Angeles concert tour He has been honored by VH-1’s Save The Music and nominated for Song of the Year as a lyricist for “We Will Survive.” Matell was also nominated for the Best Editor’s Choice Award for Outstanding Writing for “Eastern Trees” by the always been an incredibly talented guitarist he brings not only mesmerizing ability to the table but also fantastic songs It's very rare that technical guitarists can make interesting songs that aren't just brain exercises and fretboard pyrotechnics the two albums that really inspired me were Megadeth's Rust in Peace and Slayer's Reign in Blood HEAFY My biggest inspiration for fast playing was Krisiun's Apocalyptic Revelation That's the album that got me really into learning tremelo picking I think the tremelo-picking technique is being used more and more every year by heavy bands and is a very versatile technique that can be applied to leads and rhythms alike "Aborticide (Into the Crypts of Holiness)" is the song that inspired me to get very precise with tremelo picking and since then tremelo is something I utilize on all fronts of guitar playing What helped you progress dramatically as a guitarist BEAULIEU My teacher gave me a really good practice regimen just learning and playing along to songs helped me learn chord patterns which really challenged me and improved my chops I would watch the tape and learn the exercises in the booklet To this day I still use the memorized exercises to warm up before every show but it's definitely the hardest to keep up on if I don't practice it often HEAFY Playing guitar and singing simultaneously and then you have to bring the two together slowly I used Metallica's Master of Puppets and the Cunning Stunts videoto emulate and learn how to play guitar and sing at the same time It takes years of practice to combine influences and mold it into a new What key performance in your discography is a successful example of what you try to achieve BEAULIEU The songs I get the most compliments on are "A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation" [Ascendancy] and "In the Fire" [Roadrunner United] my goal is to add to the track and make my parts catchy so that they stay with you HEAFY The solo section in "Rain," from Ascendancy seems to be a great embodiment of the stylistic niche in which I think I shine but you have to be sensible about what you're doing if you want to complement the song "Rain" is a blueprint at times for me to remember what my strength in my playing is BEAULIEU The lead players I really enjoy bring a melodic sense to the shred and make it catchy HEAFY The people who do that ludicrous 1,000-notes-a-minute playing are just working out the technical aspects of guitar to its fullest they completely neglect what I think is most important in musicianship: songwriting but it's all about the music when it comes to bands that perform songs It's difficult to master songwriting and technical prowess It almost seems like you have to pick which one you'll favor My goal as a player was always to be in a metal band and make a career out of writing and playing music We've collected between 30 to 40 songs and are narrowing that down to the best 14 for the album it's all about being what I am best at and finding the exact voice that is my playing Our next record is comprised entirely of sounds that are uniquely and truly us and the playing has to shine through with that mindset there’d be all these cases open and they’d say We’ll give you a guitar.’ I’d be like I have a guitar’”: The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde and James Walbourne on what it takes to be a real guitar hero “I Friendly The album featured the organ-fueled alternative rock hit “The Only One I Know,” which nodded to classics by the Byrds and Deep Purple The quintet’s sound was bundled into the era’s Madchester scene and touchstones to psychedelic and classic rock and Mark Collins’ guitar each signify the group’s sonic identity today anchored by founder Martin Blunt’s reliable Motown- and Stax-informed bass Former Verve drummer Pete Salisbury completes the lineup with style performing at Bottom Lounge in support of the Different Days album On February 7, the Charlatans return to perform at the Vic Theatre alongside shoegaze pioneers Ride The co-headlining Between Nowhere tour falls on the 30th anniversary of the bands’ Daytripper dates in 1993 when both acts were supporting their second albums – namely the Charlatans’ Between 10th and 11th with the clattering and groovy “Weirdo” and Ride’s Going Blank Again including “Leave Them All Behind.” At the Vic the Charlatans will perform Between 10th and 11th in its entirety Ride will play its debut full-length album including shoegaze touchstone “Vapour Trail.” Both bands promise sets full of additional fan favorites and surprises IE: Have the Charlatans and Ride played together since Daytripper or is this just something you do every 30 years TB: We actually played on the same bill at a festival in Austin “I wish I’d written that?” TB: I really like “Mouse Trap.” I like the chords and the vocal section but the vocal section and the harmonies are fantastic I really love “Leave Them All Behind” as well I would say that I was a massive Going Blank Again fan IE: What Charlatans song do you think would be best for Ride to cover TB: Maybe “Sproston Green.” Maybe we could ask Andy (Bell) to join TB: We’ve had tons of people do “Sproston Green” with us We’ve had (drummer) Stephen Morris and (keyboardist) Gillian Gilbert (both of New Order) play with us There’s no reason why we couldn’t have Loz (Ride drummer Laurence Colbert) play with Pete There won’t be the same thing every night IE: I wonder how people will celebrate the anniversary of Between 10th and 11th at shows you won’t be dodging bouquets of bananas TB: There’s plenty of banana skins to be slipped on through life IE: The Charlatans began around 35 years ago Was there a point when you stopped wondering when the band’s career might crash and realized that it could continue as long as you wanted My drive was to never have to work in a proper job again and that album (1995’s The Charlatans) was really successful Then we followed up with Tellin’ Stories there’s been things like the death of (original keyboardist) Rob Collins and the death of (original drummer) Jon Brookes where we’ve obviously realized it’s hard to say whether or not we’ll be working again next week IE: As much as I love hearing the band play new songs one reason I’m looking forward to this Between 10th and 11th show is that I’ve never heard you play “Page One.” That’s a personal favorite IE: I remember reading that “Page One” was written about feeling trapped by where the band was at that time Have 30 years changed how you think of those days TB: It was a really difficult time for the Charlatans at that point and it was suggested that “White Shirt” become a (second) single in America and that we do a video for it Julian Temple was set to set to do the video we did an about-turn and decided that we wanted to release a four-track EP Then it was time to go and release the follow-up album we had to write in the studio – a very tough lesson And so I think the whole album is quite a stressy record but now you’re coming here to celebrate it TB: That’s a really incredible way of looking at it It was suggested that both bands play an album in its entirety and it was also mentioned that Some Friendly and Between 10th and 11th were big albums for us in America No one’s heard tracks from Between 10th and 11th for so long We really only play “Weirdo” and occasionally “Can’t Even Be Bothered.” Very we’ll play “Tremelo Song.” We’ve not played the album in its entirety since it came out even though we didn’t know that it was It fits into the shoegazing scene that we weren’t involved in It’s also an electronic record that is not electronic anymore because it’s all played organically IE: “Weirdo” is adopted among Charlatans fans as an outsider anthem Was that part of your intention for the song I think the whole album is kind of self-critical I found it really hard to write even one line in a song It’s the only time it’s ever really been like that I think because the success of the first album was so huge “a rod for our back?” We made it really difficult for ourselves He would work like he was making a really good dinner He’d work very slowly but add a little bit here or there and take his time and work really carefully to put it together I just went on tons of walks and tried to get more than one line per song (laughs) The lyric for “(No One) Not Even the Rain” is memorable drawing from the beautiful poem “somewhere i have never travelled I read that you were also diving into Bob Dylan then Does that connect to Between 10th and 11th TB: I’m not sure about Dylan at that time There was a track called “Happened to Die” on the Over Rising EP we came back with “Can’t Get Out of Bed” (on 1994’s Up to Our Hips) IE: The last time you were here for a new Charlatans record was in 2018 supporting Different Days It’s a bit cold in the studio at the moment We had plans last year and just couldn’t get it together That’s just people’s lives at the moment IE: It hasn’t been too cold in the studio for you with three solo albums since Different Days including last year’s double album Typical Music but I don’t like to brag about it (laughs) IE: I suppose if I want to hear you play “Here Comes the Weekend” or “Curiosity,” I’ll have to come your way TB: I could do an acoustic version of “Here Comes the Weekend” very easily anywhere on any street corner of America For “Curiosity,” I might need a capo IE: I’ll look for you outside the Vic I wondered whether anything from Typical Music might have suited the Charlatans that I kind of avoided trying to sound anything like the Charlatans in most of my solo albums – up to this point I just wanna just write a record that encompasses everything about me.” So I think “Here Comes the Weekend” could have been “View from Above” could have been “Time That We Call Time” even could have been It would’ve gone down a different route It’s very strange with the Charlatans What that means is that if someone walks into a room with a fully formed song it’s not considered to be something to jump up and down about Everyone has to be involved in the same room at the same time with everyone’s lives and families and all that kind of stuff now … Tony lives in Ireland IE: That’s a tough commute for band practice We might need to sound-check a little bit longer than normal at the first show IE: Was any song from Between 10th and 11th particularly tricky to dust off “Chewing Gum Weekend” is tricky and “The End of Everything” is tricky TB: I really love playing “Chewing Gum Weekend.” When we first relearned how to play it “What the fuck were we thinking?” It’s been quite a one to get right Now it sounds natural because we’re playing it You’ll be pleased to know that “Page One” sounds fantastic We’ve actually changed the set around so after “Not Even the Rain,” we’re gonna play “The End of Everything” because it’s such a racket We’re doing all the songs but in a slightly different order IE: You found ways to stay busy when the world closed up shop in 2020 Were you surprised by the way Tim’s Twitter Listening Party took off as a communal album-listening experience Did that grow your audience or deepen relationships in ways that surprised you My connection with other artists grew – my phone book got bigger I think it took off because people really appreciated it during a very dark time I’ll always remember COVID as dark nights It lasted so long that not every night was dark And there were thousands of people all over the world listening to one record together IE: I’m glad that the Listening Party continues Your two Listening Party books from the series show another way to engage If it’s not with the same people that the last two books have been out on then we should find a new person to put it out There’s gonna be a radio show and a podcast as well as being on Twitter as many nights as we can without it being ridiculous there was a Saturday where there were like 10 in one day And everyone was so brilliant with their time and then it became everybody from Iron Maiden to Paul McCartney to Yoko (Ono) and Sean (Lennon) doing the John Lennon records IE: It was fun seeing your own fans go all in for Iron Maiden’s Powerslave during that Listening Party even if some of the tweets during “Two Minutes to Midnight” were sobering The Smiths’ The Queen is Dead with Mike Joyce and Steven Street involved and David Bowie’s Reality with Nicholas Pegg and Mike Garson were other highlights for me Robbie Robertson’s done a couple; he’s been brilliant IE: We spoke once before in 2015 when you were finishing Tim Book Two: Vinyl Adventures from Istanbul to San Francisco One idea behind the book is connecting memories of traveling to a physical object like a record Do you have favorite record shops you like to return to around Chicago I bought John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme I’ve always bought records in America and always had to buy an extra suitcase to get home (laughs) IE: Can you tell me about the Charlatans’ connection to Chicago house music TB: It would be buying Chicago house records that were played at the Haçienda (nightclub in Manchester It would’ve been anywhere between ’87 and ’89 I don’t in any way think that I’m an expert but it reminded me of the Northern Soul scene which is kind of like lots of these fantastic records that you dance to I had lots of records that said something probably like (deepens voice) “Pump up the …” whatever I actually can’t remember anyone right now but that’s okay ’cause it was so long ago That was the connection with Chicago house it was the most glorious thing when we played Chicago Metro because that felt like home to us Going there was like going to Graceland or something My first show when moving back here was seeing Guided by Voices there There’s a great recording of us; I think it’s a semi-bootleg or whatever It’s the Charlatans at Metro in ’91 IE: My vinyl copy of Between 10th and 11th includes that recording IE: Another thing you mentioned when we spoke in 2015 what that your son was two and a half You told me he had been brought along as an infant producer while the Charlatans recorded Modern Nature You knew when you had a good song based on his primal reaction IE: Maybe he’s ready to produce another Charlatans album We find music through his games and then on Shazam and YouTube maybe I’ll start teaching him about N.W.A IE: If he starts singing “Straight Outta Compton,” you might have to send him to school with an “explicit content” sticker It’s part of the boundaries [to push] IE: I imagine we’ll get to hear perennials like “North Country Boy,” but I’ll slip a note under the door for “Oh Vanity” or “Plastic Machinery.” Do you have a thing or two planned from Different Days TB: “Plastic Machinery” is always a good one “Different Days” is very nice too “Solutions” and “Hey Sunrise” were fantastic and “North Country Boy” is probably very high on the list who advocated for the benefits of transcendental meditation I believe that you have also found TM to be healthy for you Was it something you found to be beneficial right away Is it hard to keep it in your routine when you’re traveling “Did it affect you straight away?” I think you have to grow into it but I was hoping it was gonna happen straight away I had to calm down a little bit to properly integrate the technique although everything changed after the first one I did The brightness of the colors of life seemed to change Maybe longer because I gave up alcohol and drugs in 2006 and I kind of stopped hanging out with anyone who was involved in that kind of lifestyle IE: You must have been aware of it for a long time I would have heard about it because of the Beach Boys and the Beatles but it took a lifestyle change to become interested I think I’d heard that he was a meditator but I was sitting in a party in my own flat Lots of my friends were drinking and taking drugs and playing records They were playing like five seconds of each song and then changing the song I wanted to maintain these friendships even though I’d given up drinking and my friend Amy came over to me and said (dryly) you look like you’re having a great time.” And I said “Have you ever thought about meditating?” “Have you ever heard of Maharishi?” And I said The Beatles.” [We talked about] David Lynch who had felt the benefits of it since being a teenager It seemed to make sense with the films that he made “I’ve been doing it since I was four years old.” And she was just one of my friends who was I had this image that people who meditated were “transcendental” and did the yogic flying (laughs) all those Beatles videos seemed to make sense and what they were searching for IE: It’s interesting trying to connect the dots to sources of the Charlatans sound because they’re broad but so well integrated You drew from things I didn’t have access to when I first heard the band I had heard some British music bubbling up in the late ’80s but knew nothing about house music I enjoyed recognizing bits of the Rolling Stones in your sound but the biggest rock band I knew that played dance music was INXS Kula Shaker seemed like they were on your wavelength but that was years after you’d started TB: Connections with other bands – there’s Inspiral Carpets There are bands like Soup Dragons and Primal Scream who were all kind of shifting towards a dance element That basically came from going to the Haçienda There’s this guy called Dave Haslam who would play Indie rock and dance music and Carly Simon I guess the Rolling Stones did stuff like that on Emotional Rescue It’s not something that had never been done before but it was a new sound for a new time or a new version of that sound Factory Records were the absolute trailblazers They were all kids from Manchester who borrowed New Order’s equipment and made dance records that were big in America IE: I knew the first two Inspiral Carpets albums around the time I first heard the Charlatans They were kind of bringing Garage more to the forefront “I Wanna Be Your Dog.” It’s so easy the Charlatans might share some regional roots with the Spencer Davis Group – another band with a prominent mix of guitar and organ Deep Purple would be in the mix a few years later Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin’,” and Deep Purple IE: It’s fun to explore those sources especially when the resulting sounds are so different TB: Me and Martin used to go and watch this band called the Prisoners They were a sixties revivalist band from Medway in Kent They used to do a cover version of “Hush,” and they had a Hammond organ There’s loads of stuff floating about in our sound I have no desire to do anything that doesn’t just come from the heart But the way that you learn how to write songs is by being inspired by other people IE: The Hammond organ was a real commitment for a young band in the clubs You had to have roadies or risk throwing your back out before the gig right up until the recording of our first album where we got an advance and bought one that was a solid piece of wood with solid legs and stuff like that is on the front cover of our single “Crashin’ In,” actually The Charlatans and Ride appear at The Vic Theatre on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 Category: Featured, Stage Buzz Click the A remix combining both songs — "I Keep Forgettin' to Regulate" — became a mainstay on urban radio The two artists got together this past April to mark the song's 20th anniversary and talk about their unlikely "collaboration." "Rap is like any other genre: There are the people who are very creative with it and do remarkable things.. and then there's that whole quadrant that sounds alike," McDonald told Billboard "There's great stuff that's taken the genre to a new level over the years and 'Regulate' was one of those tracks that was kind of a landmark." View more information » There are now hundreds of dedicated music apps available for the iPhone and iPad but these digital devices are not musical instruments in the traditional sense designer Massimo Battaglia set about bringing the electric guitar and the multi-touch interface even closer His Hyper Touch Guitar concept is the result It features a capacitive touchscreen neck with 24 fret positions and either a small touchscreen pick zone or a version where the multi-touch interface continues down into the body from the neck The guitar will also feature wireless technology that will communicate with equipment such as amplifiers and computer systems and allow the player full freedom of movement The Hyper Touch Guitar has the look of a double-edged battle axe and would no doubt find fit quite nicely with the likes of WASP or KISS. Battaglia has actually designed two versions of the HTG – a basic model with a small touchscreen and a capacitive fingerboard and an EVO model that's completely multi-touch and has a carbon fiber body The designer told Gizmag that the touchscreen interface on the EVO could be used to "change any guitar parameter: tuning The 24 frets shown in the renders have a very similar appearance to those on the neck of the Kitara flat surface are kind of like a fretless version of the production digital guitar from Misa Digital The pick zone would be raised above the body and there would also be a tremelo arm – although whether this has been included for purely aesthetic purposes or would actually serve to alter the sound in some way is not clear The body of the instrument would contain volume and power switches a standard guitar jack and possibly MIDI or USB interfaces but it would also have wireless technology built in This would allow the player to communicate with equipment such as amplifiers studio boards or computer systems without any bothersome cables limiting freedom of movement Power for the instrument would be provided by some sort of high-capacity battery technology to allow for many hours of use Although moving the guitar into the digital age does seem to be a natural evolutionary advancement Battaglia says that he didn't design the Hyper Touch Guitar to replace the traditional favorite then the typewriter and then the computer.. but the pencil is still there," he explained "This musical instrument is completely new Even though the Hyper Touch Guitar is a concept for future development it was designed with current technologies in mind Battaglia told us that he has no doubt that it could be put into production with only some minor modifications but added "I do not have the financial resources to create a prototype with a technology so sophisticated." Even though I've been playing electric guitar for more years than I care to admit I am quite excited by this brave new digital world that's opening up before us – confirmation (if any were needed) that guitar innovation continues to thrive Homes and Property | Home Page Bo Diddley, the pioneering guitarist who inspired The Beatles and the Rolling Stones, has died aged 79. Last night Sir Mick Jagger, whose band covered Diddley's songs Mona and Crackin' Up, paid tribute to the Mississippi-born musician as an 'enormous force in music'. Diddley died of heart failure yesterday morning at his home in Archer, Florida. Sir Mick said: 'He was a wonderful, original musician who was an enormous force in music and was a big influence on the Rolling Stones. Guitar legend: Bo Diddley has died aged 79 'He was very generous to us in our early years and we learned a lot from him. We will never see his like again.' Diddley had a heart attack in August while on tour, three months after suffering a stroke which affected his ability to speak. He had returned to Florida to continue rehabilitation. Diddley, born Ellas Bates, was renowned for his home-made square guitar, dark glasses and black hat. His first single, 1955's Bo Diddley, introduced record buyers to his signature rhythm. The B-side, I'm a Man, also became a rock standard. Many other artists, including The Who, Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello, were inspired by Diddley's distinctive rhythm and guitar work. His contribution to music was rewarded in 1999 with a lifetime achievement prize at the Grammy Awards. Diddley was also an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and had a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, It is thought the name Bo Diddley came from other youngsters when he was growing up in Chicago. But some experts believe a possible source for the name is a one-string instrument used in traditional blues music called a diddley bow. Diddley's major songs included Say Man, You Can't Judge a Book by Its Cover, Shave and a Haircut, Uncle John, Who Do You Love? and The Mule. His influence was felt on both sides of the Atlantic. Buddy Holly borrowed his classic rhythm for the song Not Fade Away. The Rolling Stones' bluesy remake of Holly's song gave them their first chart single in the U.S. in 1964. The following year, The Yardbirds had a top 20 hit in the U.S. with their version of I'm a Man. Diddley was also one of the pioneers of the electric guitar, adding reverb and tremelo effects. In a 1999 interview he said: 'I came out of school and made something out of myself. I am known all over the globe, all over the world. 'There are guys who have done a lot of things that don't have the same impact that I had.' Usually limited to the confines of a bedroom, playing the air guitar means flailing arms and energetic miming but when it comes to the world championships the most important trait is ‘no shame’. That was what helped Justin Howard aka ‘Nordic Thunder’ out-mime ‘Airistotle’ and win the title of Air Guitar World Champion at the 17th annual competition in Oulu, Finland. From all over the world they came, dressed to impress in leather straps, bright pants and fake blood, for their 60 second solo performance, imaginary guitar in hand. Nordic Thunder from Chicago won over 18 finalists from countries including Japan, Britain, Russia and Czech Republic. He said before his winning performance: ‘My strength is that I have absolutely no shame. ‘I’m not concerned by looking like a fool. I embrace that and I plan to look like that today.’ Claiming his title he said: 'I feel amazing, I feel loved, I feel like crying and laughing and hugging.' The competition aims to promote world peace. On the championship website it says: ‘According to Air Guitar ideology, wars will end, climate change stops and all bad things disappear if all the people in the world play the air guitar.’ Following air guitar tradition, after the champion was announced all competitors took to the stage once more to encourage the whole world to play air guitar to Neil Young’s ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’. He narrowly beat Matt ‘Airistotle’ Burns from New York and Dutchman Theun de Jong who came in second and third. Former world champion Aline 'The Devil's Niece' Westphal from Germany came in eighth. She said of her solo: 'The performance this year is very different from the performance last year, it's more girlie style, it's wild, it's rock n roll style and it's not so dramatic as last year and yeah, a little bit more crazy, I think.' Torvinen said: 'I for myself, I like improvisations. That is the main thing for me, but of course you have to look at the whole performance and I think my heart decides who is the best one. tick back up buyers (particularly first-home buyers) couldn’t be blamed for feeling more than a little disheartened The amenity-packed inner suburbs are certainly too expensive and the only affordable places are on the city’s fringe where there are barely any trains The recent Domain Liveable Melbourne study by Deloitte Access Economics and Tract Consultants pinpointed Melbourne’s most liveable suburbs by assessing factors including cafes A total of 307 suburbs were included and were ranked according to weighted scores for each factor most of the top-ranking suburbs were in the inner ring where property comes with a hefty price tag But 21 suburbs that made it into the top half of the rankings also had median house prices lower than Melbourne’s overall median of $855,428 The least expensive liveable suburb was Dandenong It ranked number 143 overall but did better for its walkability (rank 40) its access to retail (rank 60) and the train (rank 75) It got its highest ranking of 12 for access to secondary education Stockdale & Leggo Dandenong agent Jerome Mulholland said Dandenong’s establishment as a satellite city meant it was more liveable than other far-flung suburbs Dandenong Hospital and shops and cafes on Lonsdale and Foster Streets gave the suburb all the makings of a bustling activity hub “A couple of years ago there was a stigma to Dandenong – now that stigma is gone,” Mr Mulholland said He said young families and new Australians were the ones typically buying into the area as well as some investors looking to rent out units and townhouses “People are finding it’s still affordable because of the $600,000 benchmark for three-bedroom townhouses,” Mr Mulholland said Of the 20 most affordable suburbs in the top half of the liveable rankings Footscray ranked the highest by a considerable margin The former industrial suburb turned hipster hub came in at number 6 overall and ranked 26th for walkability 28th for both culture and retail and 38th for access to the train The median house price in Footscray is $784,750, and Joshua Lowman from McGrath Yarraville said its comparatively low house prices along with the influx of new restaurants and bars were bringing young professionals and families to the suburb “The amenities are there for the first home buyers – they don’t have to travel into the city if they don’t want to Other suburbs making the affordable and liveable cut included Frankston in the south The far east and north-east had an impressive number of suburbs in the list including Greensborough Real Estate Institute of Victoria vice-president Adam Docking said these suburbs were unlikely to stay affordable for long people are now looking at them because they’ve got good infrastructure more spacious homes and more people want to get away from the city,” Mr Docking said had the third-lowest median house price of $628,000 and ranked 91st for liveability It scored well for its access to the train and cafes but really shone in the areas of tree cover and topographic variation for which it ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively Study co-author Daniel Terrill from Deloitte Access Economics said topographic variation often meant a more picturesque outlook “Unless we are talking about land that is too steep to develop an undulating landscape is more interesting than a flat one,” Dr Terrill said Fletchers Yarra Ranges agent David McKay said Belgrave had started to attract artists and musicians from places including Brunswick, as there were four live music venues in the suburb.  “They’re mostly first-home buyers – young couples wanting to start families,” he said. “There are bigger blocks, lots of trees, more privacy – people are into bird-watching, photography and yoga. I think it attracts a lot of people who want the fresh air.” For those looking to buy a unit under Melbourne’s median unit price, suburbs in the inner-north and south opened up including Brunswick, Carlton, Thornbury, Windsor, St Kilda and Cheltenham. Mr Docking said units were always going to provide buyers with a more affordable option, and for those willing to live a little smaller, suburbs with very strong amenities would open up. “Younger purchasers are not looking at a unit as a downgrade. They’re utilising more of their surrounds, and their home is just a place to sleep,” he said.
