The Belgian prosecutor said Friday it has launched an investigation into possible war crimes committed by a Belgian soldier fighting for Israel in Gaza The federal prosecutor office said that the probe focuses on Belgian member of an elite unit of the Israeli military. According to multiple media reports the man is a dual Belgian-Israeli citizen in his 20s from the Brussels municipality of Uccle who serves the Israeli army in the “Refaim” sniper unit which has been active in the Gaza Strip since October 2023 an Italian and the Belgian man under investigation Tirawi said he received information from an American soldier in a lead position in the unit who provided evidence that the unit was shooting at civilians even if they were not armed and did not pose any danger Belgium’s Justice Minister Paul Van Tigchelt said on Thursday that the Belgian probe sought to verify the information published in the press but that does not exempt it from its obligation to respect international humanitarian law,” Van Tigchelt told the Belgian parliament The Belgian-Palestinian association (ABP) filed a criminal complaint on Thursday against the man asking the Belgian authorities to carry out the investigation “diligently.” “This will help to end the impunity of criminals, as the impunity they enjoy fuels their subsequent crimes,” the association said in a statement. “The ABP calls for the Belgian justice system to participate in the work of international justice alongside international courts. The Belgian justice system has an obligation to act when Belgians are perpetrators or victims of crimes under international law.” In response to POLITICO’s request for comment, the IDF said that in cases of suspected criminal offence, the Military police criminal investigation division will open an investigation. “The IDF examines events of this kind as well as reports of videos posted on social media and handles them with command and disciplinary measures,” the IDF spokesperson said in a statement. This report has been updated to include a response from the IDF. “Excellent result,” cheers former Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki. U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the conflict have proved fruitless so far. An uptick in gang violence has seen more than a dozen shootings so far this year. Russia has yet to prove it wants to end the war, prime minister says. CategoriesCategoriesEnglishGENERAL, WORLDNew protests at Israeli embassy in Uccle after police crackdown30 May 2024 For the third day in a row hundreds of people have gathered at the Israeli embassy in Uccle are protesting against the war in Gaza and demanding sanctions against Israel Several hundred demonstrators gathered in front of the Israeli embassy in Uccle on Thursday The demonstration has been largely peaceful sitting on the ground and making peace signs It is the third consecutive day of protests in front of the embassy. A large disused office building from the 1970s, located at the southern edge of Brussels, is now transformed into a vibrant new town hall for the municipality of Uccle this town hall will offer workspace for 450 public servants and reconnect the building to the neighborhood by opening up a lush green public garden The municipality of Uccle acquired the old headquarters from Fabricom, an industrial machines company, in 2014 and started a competition procedure for the renovation of the building. The competition was won by the archipelago and construction works started in 2019. Three years later we are proud to present a highly innovative project which aims for a positive impact on both its social and ecological environment. © Stijn BollaertCircular building. From the start of the design process, we have looked at this renovation project as part of a larger change in society towards a circular economy. We first made an extensive study of the existing building and the elements that can be reused. We also carefully analyzed the energetic performance of the façade to optimally reuse the external elements in concrete. The rigorous expression of the building’s structure is preserved Different window patterns create a link between the floor levels and offer a lighter reading of the façade the public distributor of
