A British boy aged 12 was killed and five other members of his family including his twin were injured when a BMW crashed off a Belgian motorway
The accident involving the boy and the family happened on the E40 highway near Veurne
at around 1am on January 8 while en route to the French border
The family's BMW X5 with a British number plate reportedly lost control and ended up crashed on its roof between the motorway and an exit road
Local police said in a statement about the accident: 'There were a total of six occupants in the car
a 12-year-old boy with British nationality
was thrown out of the vehicle and died of his injuries.'
Investigators are probing whether poor weather and an 'unadjusted speed' caused the crash
The boy was reportedly one of four children in the car
While four family members reportedly suffered only minor injuries
but is understood not to be in a life-threatening condition
The British family involved in the crash has not yet been named, but the Jewish Chronicle reports that the boy attended Menorah Grammar School in Edgware, London
No one witnessed the crash and the police was only called thanks to the BMW's automatic emergency alert system, local media reports.
'The first findings show that the poor weather conditions and aquaplaning on the road, in combination with an unadjusted speed, may be the causes of the accident,' the prosecutor's office said in a statement.
'No other vehicles were involved in the accident. The investigation is continuing.'
The family was reportedly returning from Antwerp when the accident happened near Veurne. The exit to the city was closed for several hours following the incident.
The boy's tragic death comes just two weeks before he was due to celebrate his bar mitzvah with his twin brother, according to the Jewish Chronicle.
His classmates at Menorah Grammar School reportedly reacted 'in different ways' to the news of his death, the newspaper reports.
In an email sent to parents on January 9, the school alerted parents of the passing 'of a very dear talmid [student]'.

no-frills potato news stories from around the world
In a bold move marking the intersection of innovation and efficiency, PepsiCo is set to revolutionize its Veurne (Belgium) factory, one of Europe’s largest potato crisp production facilities. This transformation, a leap into the future of automated logistics, is in collaboration with Mecalux
Twenty-five years after acquiring the factory
PepsiCo’s Belgian entity has decided to overhaul its logistics operations
The plan is to construct a state-of-the-art Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) to manage the daily production of an impressive 2 million bags of crisps and snacks
The centerpiece of this logistics transformation is the installation of Mecalux’s Automated Pallet Shuttle system
Recognized as one of the most efficient high-density storage solutions in the market
this system promises to enhance product inflow and outflow dramatically
It consists of a 100-meter-long conveyor line connecting PepsiCo’s production plant directly to the AS/RS
This innovative approach ensures a seamless and efficient transition from production to storage
featuring four aisles with two blocks of racking on each side
twelve transfer cars will operate on each storage level
moving goods to their designated storage channels
motorized shuttle cars will then automatically transport pallets to their specific locations
Further augmenting the system’s efficiency
PepsiCo will implement Mecalux’s Easy WMS warehouse management system
This software integration with the company’s ERP system is a crucial element
ensuring real-time stock control and seamless coordination of product flow from production to storage
the Veurne factory is not just large but also a beacon of sustainable technology
The introduction of the new AS/RS from Mecalux is expected to further cement its position as a leading facility in the crisps and snacks sector
This ambitious project at the Veurne plant is more than an upgrade; it’s a testament to PepsiCo’s commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology for efficiency and sustainability
it sets a new standard in the food production industry
particularly in the realm of crisps and snacks
marking a significant milestone in the journey of innovation in logistics

With Lay’s Factory Home Heating—a winner of Fast Company’s 2022 World Changing Ideas Awards—the vapor from cooking potatoes replaces natural gas to heat nearby houses
BY Elise Hannum
Belgian real-estate developer Ion was looking for sustainable heating alternatives for a new residential area in the city of Veurne when it received a proposal from a surprising source: PepsiCo
The food and beverage juggernaut suggested a collaboration between the community and a nearby potato chip plant operated by Lay’s
The vapor from cooking up to 20 tons of potatoes per hour could heat a water circuit
replacing natural gas with a more environmentally efficient process while simultaneously providing PepsiCo with a valuable carbon offset
[Illustration: Mauco Sosa]The project—the winner of the Europe, Middle East, and Africa category of Fast Company’s 2022 World Changing Ideas Awards—is the result of a group effort from PepsiCo
The technology will deliver heating in radiators and tap water to its first homes sometime in the first half of 2022
topping out at 500 households upon the project’s completion in the next 10 years
The venture will help PepsiCo meet its targets to cut carbon emissions by more than 40% by 2030 (against a 2015 baseline) and achieve net-zero emissions by 2040
“but also helps us give back to the local communities where we operate,” says Wim Destoop
vice president and general manager of PepsiCo Northwest Europe
While the system started off as a convenient intersection of needs in one area
with the right conditions and interested parties
The final deadline for Fast Company’s Brands That Matter Awards is Friday, May 30, at 11:59 p.m. PT. Apply today.

CategoriesCategoriesEnglishJUSTICE, ELECTIONSProxy voting fraud investigations in nine Flemish municipalities11 February 2025
Belgian authorities are conducting criminal investigations into alleged proxy vote fraud in nine municipalities across Flanders following the 2024 local elections
Flemish Interior minister Hilde Crevits told parliament on Tuesday
based on seized proxy voting documents and recommendations from public prosecutors
the appointed mayor is under investigation
which could affect their official confirmation
Crevits said she would carefully assess each case but would not delay decisions unnecessarily
She emphasised that soliciting proxy votes was a criminal offence and that legal consequences would depend on the outcome of ongoing investigations
but it’s too early to assess the full extent of the issue,” the minister said
mayoral appointments will proceed as normal
The issue of possible misuse of proxy votes - where one person votes on behalf of another - first gained attention after reports of irregularities in Ninove
where large numbers of proxy votes were seized
There were concerns that fraudulent medical certificates may have been used to justify them
A separate case in Veurne involves former mayor Peter Roose

Daniel Rubin’s parents and three siblings all sustained injuries
in the crash but their lives are not in danger
The fatal incident occurred on the E40 in Veurne
at around 1am last Thursday when family were returning from a simchah in Antwerp
The car turned over and came to rest on its roof
according to pictures of the accident published by Belgian media
The boy was thrown from the vehicle and sadly lost his life a the scene
Initial findings by investigators found that poor weather conditions were the cause of the crash
The West Flanders Public Prosecutor’s Office appointed a traffic expert to investigate the exact circumstances
a teacher at Menorah Grammar who is also a member of the Chai Lifeline Crisis Intervention team
helped the boy’s classmates process the news
The pupils were told the news in a morning assembly
Hamer told the JC that the boys reacted “in different ways”
were given space to process their feelings and were provided with guidance on available support now and in the future
was doing “an amazing job in terms of caring for the pupils” and was “really trying to be there” for them
In the email informing parents of pupils of the death of “a very dear talmid [student]” in an accident

All his teachers pointed out that he was a model student in school
He was always eager to learn Torah and Gemarah (Talmud) and was always kind and considerate to all pupils

in spite of their terrible sorrow and pain
as a community will be there to support the family in any way possible."

car crash
A fatal accident occurred on the E40 motorway in Veurne (West Flanders) this morning. A person was hit several times by oncoming vehicles, but the exact circumstances are still unclear. Due to the accident, the motorway had to be closed for traffic heading towards the Jabbeke junction. Initial police observations suggest the person killed was probably a migrant, eager to make his or her way to the UK.
The accident happened early this morning. What exactly happened is still unclear. "A car with French occupants called the police around 5am to say they had run over a body," explains Tom Janssens of the public prosecutor's office.
"When the emergency services arrived, they saw that body parts were scattered over several hundred metres of the motorway. They collected the body parts, and it was said to be a human with a darker skin colour. We suspect that this person is a migrant. Police had been in contact with migrants in the area the night before."
It wasn’t possible to recover all body parts at this time, making identification impossible for now. A further search with a sniffer dog is planned and DNA samples will be taken."
It is thought at least 2 cars hit the body, which had probably been hit several times earlier. "The body parts were so scattered that the body was probably hit several times including by heavy lorries" Tom Janssens said.

Too hard, too green, or overripe: finding the perfect avocado in the supermarket is sometimes a struggle. Supermarket chain Jumbo, however, has found a handy solution. From now on, their Ranst and Veurne stores in Belgium will boast an X-ray device that tells you exactly what your avocado looks like on the inside.
In recent years, the craving for avocados has been insatiable. This so-called green gold rapidly became incredibly popular in Belgium, from freshly made guacamole to trendy avocado toast. But finding the perfect avocado is sometimes another story. These new avocado scanners now ensure that this is a thing of the past.
The perfect avocado in an instantTo see the exact status of your avocado, all you need to do is hold it in front of the scanner. Within a few seconds, you will know the condition of your favorite green fruit. The avocado scanner uses a mini X-ray to check the sugar, water, and starch values. It uses that information to determine the avocado's internal texture. The score on the device indicates how ripe your avocado is. So, no more squeezing avocadoes to judge their ripeness.
Philippe Calliauw, who runs Jumbo Ranst, says, "Our new avocado scanner now lets shoppers effortlessly pick the perfect avocado without needing to squeeze the fruit. We want to offer everyone who shops here a positive experience, and the scanner contributes to that. It's a fun addition to the shopping experience and shows we're committed to providing our customers with the best service."
Jumbo Veurne's Siska Abeele and Justin Robaeys are also excited about the new gadget: "People are very curious about the avocado scanner and are eager to try it out. And since we installed it, avocado sales have increased. Shoppers enjoy a better shopping experience, and our avocados are flying off the shelves: it seems like a win-win."
Expansion to other Jumbo storesThese scanners' deployment is part of a test to assess whether they can be used in other stores, too. This is a first in Belgium, though Jumbo started using something similar in the Netherlands in November last year.

The centrally positioned buildings showed a lot of low points and because a renovation approach could not heal the site sufficiently, a partial demolition was carried out. The house was kept for renovation.

A haulage boss has slammed the horrific condition of a toilet at Truckstop Veurne
posing the question as to how the road transport industry can attract new drivers with such facilities
A driver working for Whites Transport Services recently filmed the scene at a toilet located by Truckstop Veurne’s fuel pumps
which somewhat resembled the horrid toilet seen in the hit 90s film Trainspotting
Screenshots of the smartphone video are visible in the image above
Truckstop Veurne has since replied to the man who shot the video by blaming the state of the toilet
The truck stop has also pointed out that alternative
— Pete White (@PeteWhite5000) July 21, 2021
Although it was not the only toilet on site
and there are other ‘sanitary facilities' at other truck stops in a similarly unsatisfactory condition (both in the UK and on the European continent)
it’s examples like this that many hauliers believe are a factor in the current driver shortage
told Trans.INFO that sub-standard facilities such as these are “disgusting” and asked how the industry is supposed to make itself appealing to a new generation of drivers given the state of some of the facilities
I find it quite distressing that drivers are expected to use these toilets in the disgusting state that they are left in
It seems that they are never cleaned or sanitised and you would probably catch something sitting on that seat
How are we meant to make this industry appealing to new drivers when they will be faced with situations like this
Animals in a zoo would even have better conditions than this
as White himself has pointed out in the clip embedded below
many hauliers and truckers have made it clear that significant improvements still need to be made for the benefit of present and future lorry drivers
Difference between UK & European Facilities for Drivers
These are the showers for drivers at a truck stop in Germany
Not sure why all UK services and the Toilets & Showers in the services are so disgusting & unhygienic
Posted by Whites Transport Services Ltd on Tuesday
they provided the following response to White’s driver via Instagram:
The truck stop currently has a rating of 3.5/5 on the Truck Parking Europe app
while it’s restaurant is rated 2.5/5 on Michelin’s Truckfly website (although the latter is admittedly just based on 19 reviews)
Posted by Hobgoblin on Saturday, 15 June 2013
as well as laundry and truck cleaning services
the facility is roughly an hour’s drive away from Calais
The website also says that the truck stop was “recently completely renewed to offer an even better service to the truck drivers who are customers of its service station.”
the website says “toilets are cleaned several times a day
we hope we can count on your cleanliness and respect for our work
The family were reportedly returning from a simchah in Antwerp last night when the accident occurred
with poor weather conditions blamed for the accident
Volunteers from ZAKA’s International Unit -a voluntary post-disaster response team- confirmed they had responded to the accident
ZAKA’s Deputy Director of Operations
said: “This is a devastating and painful event
the boy who was killed celebrated his first tefillin ceremony here in Israel
and was due to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah with his twin brother in the coming days.”
An email sent around to Menorah parents confirmed the tragic accident and offered advice on how to break the news to pupils
It confirmed that a Year 3 girl and her parents were “safe” after being involved in the accident
but that the girl’s brother had been killed
The letter added:”If you decide to tell your child then it is very important when talking to your child to be calm
direct and clear and to say that her brother has died
“This is a very important part of helping your child to process the information and helps them come to terms with it
It is quite normal for children to show strong emotions of anger
You must reassure them that these feelings are normal
Please stress to your child that it is very rare for children to die in a car accident
“Should further support be required we are in touch with the Crisis Trauma Team who are ready and available to step in
support is best given by teachers whom the children know and trust.”
