The bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a congenital heart defect in which the aortic valve has two cusps rather than three
Moderate to severe aortic regurgitation is the most common complication in young adult BAV patients and requires major
BAV repair is an evolving surgical treatment for aortic regurgitation that preserves native valve tissue and circumvents risks and quality of life concerns associated with conventional aortic valve replacement in young adults
BAV repair remains underutilized and there is substantial variability in surgical planning across institutions
we discuss 3D and 4D computational image analysis methodologies that we are developing to gain new insights into valvular regurgitation and surgical treatment of the disease
These methodologies enable pre-operative visualization of valve morphology and motion
as well as automated quantification of metrics that are used to decide which surgical strategy is optimal for a patient’s valve
We will discuss how the advancement of image analysis
applied to modalities such as echocardiography and computed tomography
provides unique opportunities to standardize the surgical planning process and increase the utilization of repair as an alternative to valve replacement in young adults

As you watch the Golden Knights play on the ice in full amazement with the fast pace game
you may zoom in right by the ice and see Ashali Vise scribbling down notes and keeping tabs on the energy of the team behind the bench
the rinkside reporter takes pride in adding depth and elements to the team's television broadcast
Highlighting special moments involving the players and unveiling the curtain little by little every game are what make the games a can't-miss experience
While Vise can be seen asking players questions on air during intermission
She began by learning every single part of what makes a production work behind the scenes
she continues to ask those questions and create moments for the viewers at home
What was your journey like to be where you are today
Ashali Vise: Fun is the first word I would use to explain the journey to get where I am today
I've always been a huge sports fan and someone who enjoyed talking about sports
It wasn't until college that I realized that it could be a career
I took every sports broadcasting class that the school offered
and started interning at a local news station
and then got an internship with another NHL team
They then hired me full time as a video producer and then slowly I started putting myself on camera just to get reps
and they were crazy enough to start using it by the end of my internship
I noticed that a rinkside reporter job was going to be open here with the Vegas Golden Knights
so I reached out and went through the audition process and was lucky enough to land the job
What did you learn while being a production assistant behind the scenes that you still carry on to this day
Ashali Vise: I think it's super important to learn every aspect of journalism
It really helps you understand how important the roles are of every single person that's behind the camera
every single person that's in the production truck
AV: Daren Millard has become such a big role model of mine
because I think that he's just so creative and such a good writer and just brings things
There's never a show that he does where it's a cookie cutter
but he's the first one that jump out at me
Daren is someone who I very much look up to
if not the best in the business at his job
Everyone will give him a hard time around the office
but that's what makes him as great as he is
watching him and the way he goes about everything and the way he goes about his writing
It’s about stuff that I have to make sure I get when I'm on the road
Like morning coffee is a non negotiable before morning skate
and myself go and get coffee together every game day morning
That's our opportunity to not only get the caffeine for the morning
That's when I literally come to Tavis Strand
and he hasn't even had a morning coffee yet
I need to get Canadian candy like Coffee Crisp and Cherry Blasters
How would people closest to you describe Ashali Vise
There's definetely a lot of things the people like to give me a hard time about
I think people would like to describe me as positive as well
We always joke about Shane Hnidy is the grumpy one of the crew and I am always smiling
Even though he's a big teddy bear and not actually grumpy
If you could have any superpower what would it be
Favorite memory since being a part of the team
AV: It is hard to beat the team winning the Stanley Cup
The best thing about the job we get to do is witness peoples dreams come true
There is nothing better then getting to see that
You get to know these athletes as people because that's what they are
It's hard to put into words how rewarding it is to see them living their dreams and sharing those stories as well
What if your favorite thing about the city
I still love seeing the palm trees and the mountains while driving to work
The city's support of the team is also just super special

Firefly Aerospace is one of the American vendors NASA is partnering with to deliver payloads to the lunar surface through the Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative
NASA has selected Firefly Aerospace as the lander and rover provider to deliver UCF’s Lunar Vulkan Imaging and Spectroscopy Explorer (Lunar-VISE) payload to the Moon’s Gruithuisen Domes to investigate how these mysterious silica-rich volcanic features formed
the multi-instrument payload built by BAE Systems and Arizona State University (ASU) will gather data on the lunar regolith to understand how it may be used as a resource in future exploration of the lunar surface
These companies are eligible to bid on NASA contracts
allowing for swift delivery and advanced scientific research and exploration
“The CLPS initiative carries out U.S. scientific and technical studies on the surface of the Moon by robot explorers,” said Joel Kearns, deputy associate administrator for exploration and lead of NASA’s Exploration Science Strategy and Integration Office in a press release
“As NASA prepares for future human exploration of the Moon
the CLPS initiative continues to support a growing lunar economy with American companies
Understanding the formation of the Gruithuisen Domes
as well as the ancient lava flows surrounding the landing site
answer important questions about the lunar surface.”
Firefly was awarded its fourth task order worth $179 million to deliver six experiments
to the Gruithuisen Domes on the near side of the Moon in 2028
Similar silicic volcanic domes on Earth are formed due to properties not observed on the Moon
leaving lunar scientists puzzled on how these mysterious domes formed
The Lunar-VISE science team will take what is learned at the Gruithuisen Domes and what is already known from other silicic volcanic spots on the Moon to reconstruct the history of its evolution and volcanism
“We are beginning to have actual hardware and are building our instruments
and now we know how we will get them deployed on the lunar surface and what our rover will look like,” says Lunar-VISE’s co-investigator Jessica Sunshine
a professor of astronomy and geology at the University of Maryland
“What started as a concept and then figures in a proposal is now amazingly really happening
this marks a new exciting phase that gets us tantalizingly close to going from paper to the Moon.”
the Lunar-VISE team anticipates the final check
or the System Integration and Acceptance Reviews (SIR)
in August to ensure all components are suitable and safe for intended operations
“I’m very proud of our Lunar-VISE team in developing
and testing our payload instruments and getting us ready for integration onto Firefly’s Ghost lunar lander and rover,” says Principal Investigator Kerri Donaldson Hanna
an associate professor in UCF’s Department of Physics
“The Lunar-VISE team is excited to work with Firefly to plan our science and exploration operations at the Gruithuisen Domes in 2028.”
With innovative research in physics and planetary science
UCF professors are developing the science and tech to get us back to the moon
Vise has added senior industry executives as advisors and is aggressively pursuing the RIA aggregator market to grow
Vise, an automated asset management platform that helps advisors build and manage personalized portfolios for their clients, announced this week that it has hired Ross Znavor as president
having served as an executive advisor with the company for over a year
Znavor spent over two decades at BlackRock
perhaps of most interest to advisors are the years he spent as part of the team that built and developed the Aladdin Wealth Technology platform
He most recently served as Chief Client Officer for Latin America and also worked in Blackrock's portfolio management
institutional business and retirement groups and was well
Ross will help lead the company’s strategic initiatives and oversee operational execution and go-to-market strategy
Vise co-founder and CEO Samir Vasavada said that Znavor’s rare mix of experience—as someone who could plumb the depths of startup problem-solving and as someone who has held leadership roles and helped close major deals at the world’s largest asset manager—made him the perfect fit for his new role
“Ross spent almost a year as an executive advisor
and we wanted to really get to know him ahead of time and build trust with the team
and it was a bit of a different recruiting process than you typically find at a startup,” said Vasavada
referring to the outright top executive hires many startups make
Related:A Frank Chat With the Founders of Vise
to join (CIO) Runik (Mehrotra) and Samir and take all the experience I’ve had—from being an advisor at Merrill Lynch and then all the years at BlackRock and as a member of the founding team building Aladdin,” said Znavor
I really had the opportunity to look back and think: ‘Where did I have the most fun?’ Building the Aladdin wealth-tech business."
Over the last few months, Vise has expanded its platform capabilities to support the needs of RIA aggregators in addition to its established core market of standalone RIA firms
Central to those platform capabilities is the ease with which Vise claims its technology can ingest an RIA aggregator’s investment models
which include both advisor and home office strategies
provide a unified workflow for them and help them centralize investment management operations
“And it is working,” said Znavor of the aggregator strategy
platform assets—which the company said include both its managed assets for RIAs and assets on the Vise for aggregators platform—have grown to more than $3.5 billion
Related:InvestCloud Announces Redesign, New Strategic Direction
“Existing clients have been growing significantly
but the breakout growth has been from aggregators,” Vasavada said
its managed assets for individual RIA firms stand at a little over $1 billion (assets in the aggregator platform are not under Vise’s management and do not have to be reported there)
While he and Znavor said they could not yet name which aggregators were using Vise
their first announcement was imminent in the next few weeks
“What I can say is that we have signed multiple of the largest RIA aggregators
several hundred billion in total assets,” said Vasavada
In September, Vise announced that Andrew Waisburd
former head of Invesco’s global indexing business and global head of portfolio management
had joined the company as co-chief investment officer alongside Travis Fairchild
previously a partner and portfolio manager at O’Shaughnessy Asset Management
the current chairman and former CEO of Edelman Financial Engines
had joined Vise as an executive advisor focusing on distribution and partnerships
the founder of Tiburon Strategic Advisors and the former chairman of Envestnet
Vasavada responded that it stood at more than 40 (there are pending hires)
Almost all report to Vise’s New York office daily
“three to four,” operating remotely on a regular basis
He said that this was one of the hard lessons the company learned when the staff reached more than 100: “It was hard to operate remotely at that size.”
The firm has experienced ups and downs in recent years
it rolled out major enhancements to its artificial intelligence-powered platform
including its tax and cash management features
“The good news is that we have been able to focus on those people we have left
and because we were able to downsize effectively
and that gives us time to grow,” said Vasavada

This mesmerizing mechanical vise adjusts its shape to hold oddly shaped items still without damaging them
using a design first patented more than a century ago
It's a problem that's existed as long as humans have been trying to build and engineer things
and every backyard tinkerer has doubtless had to bodge together a solution for this kind of thing at one time or another
One very neat solution was put forth by Austrian/Hungarian inventor Paulin Paul Kunze in the early 1920s
Kunze envisaged a "fractal" vise using a number of freely rotating semi-circular grips
smaller ones nested within the larger ones
such that as the vise is tightened on an object
molding themselves to the shape of the object and distributing pressure across it much more evenly than you can with a straight-jawed vise
It did become a product at the time, sold by Mantle & Co – which later sold it to the United States Automatic Box Machinery Co, where it was rebranded as the Boston Automatic Vise. More recently, the idea has made its way into a bunch of 3D-printed DIY kits – and in 2021
YouTube channel Hand Tool Rescue reached 23 million viewers with the following restoration of a 1920s-era Mantle vise they dug up:
Not everyone is a vintage tool refurbisher or DIY enthusiast
so it's great to see a terrific old idea like this one getting another chance to make a splash thanks to "makers
tinkerers and engineers" at UK company MetMo (Metal in Motion)
The MetMo team has created a compact version of Kunze's fractal vise
with options for 3.2-inch (82-mm) or 1.2-inch (32 mm) clamping zones
a precision fine screw drive to perfectly lay the squeeze down with
this version lets you flip the fractal heads around
so you can invert the vise and use it (for example) to grip onto the inside of a tube or glass
There are optional adapter plates you can use to bolt it to a bench
or a ball mount that clamps onto a bench and gives you many more flexible positioning options
You can get 'em in aluminum or brick-outhouse stainless steel
or if you're desperate to throw money away
there's also a stainless steel version plated in 24-carat gold
MetMo has designed them – particularly the stainless models – to outlast the buyer as a tool that can be passed down a few generations
and the Fractal Vise is designed to be taken apart and put back together so it can be customized
This might be a 1920s idea, but the pricing is extremely 2025. It starts at UK£149 (US$192) for the smallest aluminum vise, and goes up to UK£279 (US$360) for the long-travel stainless version before taking off into sillier territory for the gold-plated vises. These are early-bird discounts on Kickstarter
where MetMo is crowdfunding this product launch
and deliveries aren't set to begin til January 2026
this is a super-charming design – part mechanical fidget toy
part seriously useful workshop tool – and those of us that wouldn't shell out for this kind of thing can still enjoy the idea and the video
We can also enjoy a second Hand Tool Rescue video..
When Kunze patented this idea back in the 1920s
he thought it might also serve duty in anatomically-conforming chairs
which could use the same basic "fractal" mechanism to adapt to the shape of your butt
Check it out below – jump to the 18-minute mark for the dramatic reveal

I feel like people that are into old stuff are into all the old stuff
those of us that love classic cars are also the ones likely to love old tools
And since we like restoring cars and trucks
And what cooler old tool to restore than a real deal 1750 Snap-On Vise
In the restoration video I restore a 1750 Snap-on mechanics vise (5”) that I purchased off of eBay for around $400 USD
I am happy how it turned out but let me know what you think
As seen in the restoration video I dismantled the Snap-on vise and then put it in the parts washer to knock off some of the grime
I sandblasted the casted parts and some of the steel
I used the Vevor mini lathe to spin the screws and other parts to remove rust and also restore a new finish and then buffed them
For the cast parts I filed and sanded down rough areas then primed and painted them
Some of the hardware was cold blued which helps prevent rust
I went for more of an original look on the vise and did not paint any of the embossed letters
From the factory they’re the same color as the vise
I put a light coat of grease between the vise and base and boy does it turn smooth
Overall I think the vise is a beauty but tell me what you think
I plan to keep this vise for the shop and use in in future restoration videos…so you will see it again
Investment management startup Vise has added a well-known former wealth management executive to its board as the company makes a push to serve RIA acquirers.
the chairman of the board at mega-RIA Edelman Financial Engines
has joined Vise’s board as an advisor
Vise co-founder and chief executive Samir Vasavada said the addition comes as the startup rolls out a ‘Vise for RIA aggregators’ technology solution.
Raffone led $284bn Edelman as chief executive before stepping aside into the chairman role during the summer of 2023.
“I never really wanted to go to an SEC school,” Betsy Vise said
also never saw herself as someone who would run a campaign for a homecoming election
recently elected as the University of Mississippi’s Miss Ole Miss
Vise said that her friends were the ones that initially motivated her to run
After working on 2023 Homecoming Queen Anna Ware Brown’s campaign last year
Vise became more acquainted with the process and confident in her decision
I kind of thought campaigns were just tension filled and kind of annoying and a lot of work,” Vise said

“The best thing about getting involved and getting plugged in is the people I’ve loved,” Vise said
“I probably wouldn’t have stuck with it if I hadn’t made (so many) friends in different circles.”
Vise also said that through programs like the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College
she has been able to experience the smaller class sizes of a liberal arts college while still being able to participate in the culture of an SEC school
“I don’t think I could have had my college experience without tailgating and football games and all the things that come along with it,” Vise said
Vise’s campaign focused on being genuine as well as spreading the love and joy that she found in the Ole Miss community
“The mission was (that) I wanted to approach people in a genuine way
meet more people and spread that joy that I’ve loved so much here,” Vise said
Whether that was with the people I was tabling next to
the people I was campaigning against … I feel like so many freshmen love to stop by the table more so than anyone else
Vise expressed her gratitude to all of those who made her campaign and victory possible
“It takes so much work to run a campaign — from the banner being made to the stickers to the tabling,” Vise said
really grateful for people on my team — Mollie Wright
After graduation from the University of Mississippi
Vise plans on completing a fifth year in Morocco with the University of Mississippi Arabic Flagship Program
“It’s a final year of taking you from really good at Arabic to really
Vise feels honored to be chosen to represent the Ole Miss student body
I think I’ve fallen in love even more,” Vise said
I would leave and (realize) I love Ole Miss so much more; it’s just cool to represent a place I love so much.”

As I was hunting for new building materials
I came across the IQ Vise from WorkIQ Tools
Its unique design immediately got my attention
I decided to follow the trail and see where it leads
I’m sharing what I discovered about the design and build
and I’ll offer some thoughts on who it might be a good fit for
While the top of the vise looks like a fairly typical model
it connects to an arm with a ball and socket joint at the base
It’s this joint that makes all the difference
The joint allows you to twist and pivot your work material into a more convenient position to work in
where we frequently shift to a vertical hold
but we lose some of the grip strength since we only engage a portion of the jaws
It’s especially noticeable when we’re working with round stock
That’s just the beginning for the IQ Vise
Because there are so many angles to work in
The nice thing is that the joint secures with a quick clamp
there’s a locking pin that secures the joint into any of eight positions and offers 130 ft-lbs of holding torque
The first pictures I saw of the IQ Vise made me pause since it looked like there were quite a few plastic components
The majority of the build is hardened steel and cast iron
The IQ Vise has a number of accessories to make using it even more convenient
Shipping is free if you order directly from WorkIQ Tools
and there’s a 30-day return window if you don’t like it
the IQ Vise and its accessories are the only product Minnesota-based WorkIQ Tools is focused on
Considering you’re not buying into a power tool battery system
it doesn’t bother me that this is the only tool they’re making
One thing to keep in mind is that while this is an incredibly versatile bench vise, it’s not as stout as something like a Wilton Tradesman vise
and its 3 1/2-inch jaw opening limits some of the materials you’ll be able to work with
While I wouldn’t have any problem installing this in a DIY or professional shop setting for medium-duty work
I’d stop short of putting it on a work truck or using it in commercial fabrication environments
If that fits within the scope of your work
While that might not sound like a direct line into the power tool industry

Locking pliers (also known by the trademarked name Vise-Grips) are versatile tools
Their primary purpose is to lock on to stripped nuts or bolts
but you can also put a pair into action as a rudimentary clamp
Their uses are defined only by your situation and creativity
We’ve used locking pliers to quickly pinch off a hose
The build quality and mechanics of this Grip-On pair far exceeded those of the other models we looked at
None of our testers knew that a pair of locking pliers could be so smooth
This Channellock set is almost identical to our top pick
but its black color makes it harder to locate in a toolbox
In my nearly two decades of using and reviewing tools
I’ve never seen a pair of locking pliers combine so much finesse with such aggressive gripping force
the smoothest and easiest unlocking mechanism of any pair we’ve tested
They also have a jaw-sizing knob that turns easily
and the tool has a distinctive orange color that makes it easy to locate in a full toolbox or workshop drawer
except that this model has a locking nut on the jaw adjustment and is black instead of orange
We’ve never felt the need for the locking nut
and we much prefer the bright color of the Grip-On set; although these Channellock pliers were functionally fantastic in our tests
they easily got lost in a crowded toolbag because of their black color
This model is typically a few dollars cheaper than our top pick
so if you don’t mind the minor compromise of the dark color
or any of a hundred other small objects with a thick pair of serrated jaws
you need to adjust the jaws so that the space between is slightly smaller than the size of what you’re trying to grab
a series of levers and pivot points tension and lock the jaws in place
but with some designs you simply need to pull apart the handles
The most basic function of locking pliers is to grab rounded-over and stripped screws, nuts, and bolts, but in reality they’re much more versatile. As Wirecutter senior editor Harry Sawyers says, locking pliers “are at the center of a million little labor-saving shortcuts that you pick up one by one over a lifetime of doing projects.” As an example, Harry pointed to this video
which shows Tom Silva of Ask This Old House using a pair to hold up a garage door while he works on the cables
ToolGuyd’s Stuart Deutsch told us that the best locking pliers are all about ease of operation: “Can I open and close the pliers easily without needing superhuman strength and without pinching my skin?” The quality of the threaded adjustment is also important
but the most crucial factor is the jaw release
we chose our test candidates based on company reputation as well as customer feedback at retailers such as Amazon and Home Depot
I enlisted the aid of two other carpenters: Aaron Goff
then with 12 years of experience in high-end remodeling
Once we had a consensus as to which model was the best—and really
the winner was clear—we did a second round of testing in which I exclusively used our top pick for eight months as I wrapped up the full gut and remodel of my 100-year-old farmhouse
on probably a weekly basis as I’m now in the process of renovating a 250-year-old colonial saltbox
The release lever is nested in the lower handle and extends slightly from the back end
you pull the lever toward the upper handle; it’s possible to do this with a single finger even when the jaws are locked extremely tight
Compare that with nearly all of the other pliers we tested
or some significant clicking or clacking of metal on metal
This Grip-On pair offers exceptional build quality and comfort
the tolerances are so perfect that there is no movement at all
And even though the 111-10 has no padding on its handles
the handles’ rounded-over shape makes them comfortable to hold and squeeze
The jaws are long and capable of a maximum grab of about 2 inches
We tried these pliers on a variety of bolts and pipes
and we found that once this tool is locked on
Its unusual orange color makes it easy to locate
The color is not only oddly stylish but also functional
we’ve always been able to identify it instantly in a crowded toolbox or on top of a cluttered workbench
but this orange hue’s high visibility can save you a lot of time and frustration
particularly if you’re the slightly disorganized type
But we’re convinced that the smoothness of the unlocking mechanism
combined with the overall quality of the tool
the majority of the other locking pliers we tested felt clunky
The jaw-adjustment knob requires a short breaking-in period
the threads of the Grip-On 111-10 pair were a little grainy
But after we applied a squirt of WD-40 and spent a few minutes threading the knob in and out
The two differences: The Channellock version has a locking nut at the adjustment
The nut allows you to lock in a desired jaw width so that the threaded adjustment can’t move
For around-the-house tasks or even heavy DIY and pro use
this is a feature we’ve never needed; it seems more like something that could end up getting in the way in regular use
The tool’s black color is a bit of a mystery
In contrast to our experience with the distinctively orange Grip-On pair
we often had to take a few moments to find the Channellock pliers in a stuffed tool bag
but it was a slight annoyance that’s totally avoidable
Why not make these pliers Channellock blue
the Channellock 102-10 is an excellent tool and in all other ways behaves just like the Grip-On 111-10
This model is usually a few dollars cheaper
so if you are looking to save a little and don’t mind the dark color and the locking nut
as nice as the that of the Grip-On and Channellock pliers
This model also has what Knipex calls a “universal jaw,” which is supposed to make it easier to grab a variety of shapes (round
but we couldn’t find any real additional benefit to that design in comparison with the Grip-On 111-10’s jaws
In comparison with the upward-release lever
you either use two hands or drop one hand to the lower handle
and the jaws tend to release with a violent pop that can cause the tool to jump right out of your hands
Another issue is the potential to get your palm stuck between the lower handle and the release lever
which is the descendent of the original Petersen Vise-Grip pliers (Irwin merged with Petersen in 1993) and represents what most people think of when they hear the term “locking pliers.” The 5-10WR was functional
but the release lever made it difficult to use
The third unlocking method has no release lever—to open the jaws
the handles are nearly perpendicular to one another
so it also takes two hands to lock the tool onto an object
but ultimately the awkwardness of the release caused us to dismiss them
This model is unusual in that it makes the jaw-width adjustment automatic—simply clamp on an object
and the tool adjusts the jaw width by itself
A separate small knob lets you tweak the gripping force
but the handles need to open so wide that it’s almost impossible to use just one hand to lock the pliers
We tested a number of other models from Craftsman
and Stanley that have since been discontinued
I write about a variety of home topics that range from tools and outdoor power equipment to fire safety and plumbing (toilets
including those focused on bug repellents and mousetraps
I assist with some emergency-prep coverage
After enlisting three veteran carpenters to test 17 different pairs of needle-nose pliers
we found that the Klein J203-8 Heavy Duty Journeyman Pliers are the best
Grip and hold just about anything with a versatile tool that can last decades

The objective of the mission is to study how the Moon’s Gruithuisen domes were formed and provide greater insight on the creation and composition on the lunar surface
or Lunar Vulkan Imaging Spectroscopy Explorer
mission passed through two critical milestones on its continued successful path to the Moon in 2027
Lunar-VISE is a NASA Payloads and Research Investigations on the Surface of the Moon (PRISM) program-selected mission
In late January and early February, the Lunar-VISE team presented the key mission components including the science investigation
landing site and concept for operations at the lunar surface and the status of the instrument design
development and testing to an independent assessment team selected by NASA as part of its Critical Design Review (CDR)
The team reached a significant milestone for the mission in passing all 13 review criteria for the key mission components as defined by NASA
the team worked with NASA’s Planetary Missions Program Office to present the review’s results and mission progress at a key decision point meeting with Joel Kerns
deputy associate administrator for exploration and lead of NASA’s Exploration Science Strategy and Integration Office
Kerns gave approval to proceed with the mission
which clears the way to continue with hardware development
testing and integration and delivery for launch in 2027
As part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program
the mission will travel to the Gruithuisen domes where a multi-instrument payload on a lander and rover will measure the compositional and physical properties of dome-forming rocks and regolith (lunar dirt)
The Lunar-VISE mission is led by UCF’s principal investigator Kerri Donaldson Hanna
the University of Colorado Boulder and Arizona State University (ASU)
is providing the gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer for the Lunar-VISE rover
“The Lunar-VISE Gamma Ray Neutron Spectrometer (LV-GRNS) instrument is derived from the neutron spectrometer that was developed for the LunaH-Map mission
which launched in November 2022 and successfully collected lunar flyby neutron measurements,” Hardgrove says
“We’re looking forward to continuing instrument development to be able to make these exciting measurements for the first time on the lunar surface.”
The mission’s objective is to study how the domes were formed and provide greater insight on the creation and composition of the lunar surface
the instruments built by BAE Systems and ASU will gather data on the mysterious silica-rich rocks making up the volcanic domes and their high concentration of heat producing elements like thorium
This data will determine their viability as resources in future missions and explorations of the lunar surface
“The most rewarding aspect of passing the critical design review and key decision point milestones is knowing that all the hard work put in by the whole Lunar-VISE team successfully demonstrated that we can work together to build instruments that will accomplish our science and exploration goals at the Gruithuisen domes,” Donaldson Hanna says
The team is currently working on addressing the independent assessment team’s request for actions to ensure that the instruments are properly designed to survive launch
the journey to the Moon and soft landing and operations at the lunar surface
the team expects NASA to put out the call for proposals from lander and rover providers to softly land the mission at the lunar surface for its investigation
“The next step for the Lunar-VISE engineers is the building and testing of instruments and for the science team
we will be continuing to characterize our landing site and prioritizing science at the surface,” Donaldson Hanna says

Firefly Aerospace
As part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload (CLPS) initiative
Firefly’s third mission to the Moon in 2028 will utilize Firefly’s Blue Ghost lunar lander
and a rover to investigate the unique composition of the Gruithuisen Domes – a part of the Moon that has never been explored
Elytra will first deploy Blue Ghost into lunar orbit and then remain on orbit to provide long-haul communications
Blue Ghost will then land in the Gruithuisen Domes
and operate six NASA-sponsored payloads for more than 14 days on the lunar surface
The payloads flying on Blue Ghost Mission 3 will investigate the unique formation and composition of the Gruithuisen Domes with a focus on the Gamma Dome
These investigations include mapping the geologic features of the domes
searching for potential water and hydrogen molecules
demonstrating sample acquisition technologies
and galactic radio emissions on the lunar surface
The data captured will help inform future robotic and human exploration on the Moon in addition to helping us better understand the history of Earth and other planets in the solar system
Lunar-VISE is a payload with multiple instruments that will be attached to both the lander and rover to determine the composition and physical properties of the Gruithuisen Domes
The instruments attached to the lander include two cameras for characterizing the landing site and rover traverse
whereas the instruments attached to the rover include an infrared and multi-spectral camera system and a spectrometer to measure gamma ray and neutron energies
These instruments will map local variations in geological compositions and thermophysical properties in and around the Gruithuisen Gamma Dome
Heimdall is a high-resolution camera system that includes a single digital video recorder and four cameras: a wide-angle descent imager
This camera system is intended to support several goals – it will record the interaction of plume and lunar regolith during descent
characterize the properties of the Moon’s soil
map the geologic features in the Gruithuisen Domes
and support development of autonomous navigation capabilities for future missions
SAMPLR is a five degree-of-freedom robotic arm that will demonstrate sample acquisition technologies on the lunar surface
This includes demonstrating the use of a regolith scoop design
to acquire regolith samples and filter and isolate particles of different sizes to help determine properties of the regolith
ROLSES is a low-frequency radio telescope designed to detect and characterize planetary
By observing the Moon’s surface environment in radio frequencies
ROLSES will determine how natural and human-generated activity near the surface interacts with and could interfere with science conducted there
This includes activity on Earth that produces radio interference at the lunar surface in addition to natural radio emissions
NMLS is an instrument that will measure neutrons generated by galactic cosmic-ray interactions with the lunar regolith
providing ground truth of mapped neutron data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and Lunar Prospector missions
These measurements can provide valuable elemental composition information
which could include the detection of hydrogen and/or water molecules
PILS is a technology instrument that will measure the electrical performance of next generation solar cells and measure the charge build up and dust accumulation on a small solar array
This solar charging experiment will support the design of high voltage solar arrays on the surface that may be used to power in-situ resource utilization systems and other lunar surface assets
PILS will help establish baseline requirements and capabilities for future solar power generation systems for the Moon and
Similar to Blue Ghost Mission 2, Firefly’s third lunar mission utilizes a two-stage spacecraft configuration with our Blue Ghost lunar lander stacked on our Elytra Dark orbital vehicle. This unique configuration enables payload deployment and operations in lunar orbit and on the lunar surface.
At the top of the stack, the Blue Ghost Mission 3 rover will be deployed on the lunar surface to explore the depths of the Gamma Dome with an infrared camera system and a gamma ray and neutron spectrometer.
Stacked on Elytra Dark, Blue Ghost will provide data, power, and thermal resources for six NASA payloads upon landing in the Gruithuisen Domes.
At the bottom of the stack, Elytra Dark will serve as a transfer vehicle for Blue Ghost and remain in lunar orbit to provide long-haul communications services across cislunar space.
Firefly’s Blue Ghost lander will touch down in the Gruithuisen Domes, an area of ancient lava flows near Sinus Viscositatis on the Moon’s near side. Considered a geologic mystery, the Gruithuisen Domes appear to be composed of silica-rich volcanic minerals, which could indicate the presence of lunar water and hydrogen. Blue Ghost Mission 3 will be the first to land in the Gruithuisen Domes and explore the unique composition of the Gamma Dome.
Blue Ghost Mission 3 has payload capacity for additional customers, offering orbital transfer and long-haul communications in cislunar space on Elytra as well as lunar surface delivery and operations on Blue Ghost. Get in touch to learn more about joining our mission.

spoke out Wednesday against potential Medicaid cuts from the Republican Congress
our state must make up the difference by slashing other essential programs like education
or kicking thousands of Coloradans off Medicaid,” Young said in a call with reporters
joined by three other Democratic state treasurers
That's why we must do everything we can to protect Medicaid.”
Medicaid is a $880 billion-a-year state-federal program
About 1.2 million people, a fifth of the state’s population, depend on the program
which Young said accounts for about a third of the state’s budget
pregnant mothers and working class families
mental health and behavioral disabilities and lives in a group home in Pueblo West.
like many families with a member enrolled in Medicaid
The ability for us to deliver life sustaining care for her far outstrips our abilities
we just don't have the capacity to do this,” Young said
“This is why I appreciate what Medicaid provides because it's allowed her through almost 69 years of life to have life sustaining care and without this critical resource
Young said he knows this for a fact because 25 years ago the Medicaid program in the state was severely underfunded
Dorothy went through 20 residential placements; she was essentially homeless.
“This is somebody who has no ability to care for herself in the community
but was out on the street because Medicaid didn't have enough money to support her
our family was just totally in crisis,” Young said
noting thousands of Colorado families have endured similar struggles.
said that experience led him to run for office
first being appointed to represent a district around Greeley
He said Medicaid makes healthcare accessible
improves long-term outcomes and helps families stave off medical debt
“The stakes are too high to sit this one out
we need a vocal united and bipartisan coalition to defend Medicaid,” he said
urging President Trump and Republican lawmakers to take the cuts off the table and preserve benefits for millions of Americans.
Deep cuts to Medicaid, as well as the federal nutrition program SNAP, could cost Colorado 14,000 jobs and cause a $1 billion hit to the state’s budget next year, according to a report released Tuesday
Colorado simply doesn’t have the money to cover the deep cuts,Young said “You keep cutting Medicaid and you put more and more burden on the state finances
we don't have the capacity to backfill as needed there,” Young said
who have to care for anyone who comes through their doors
caring for patients with no health insurance
“We're in a huge vise here,” said Young
adding that if cutbacks hit the state agency that administers the program
many Medicaid recipients and their families will struggle to provide care on their own
He noted that his sister is not part of the population that got care as part of the expansion of Medicaid; she was enrolled before that
But he worries enrollees in the entire program will feel the impact if the expansion is cut back.
“So are they going to start cutting back services and say
but she's going to have to live in your home.’ We don't have the capacity,” Young said
Republicans, who control both chambers of of Congress, are pushing to extend existing tax cuts, which could cost as much as $4.5 trillion
Some criticize the administration of Medicaid under Gov
saying they need to fix Colorado’s program before laying blame on the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress
waste and abuse in the system that we have to be able to find so that we can actually save Medicaid for the vulnerable populations who need it most.” said Rep
a Republican who represents the 8th Congressional district in northern Colorado
that House and Senate leaders met Tuesday and planned to release updated budget numbers in a few weeks
Others in the GOP have discussed a desire to make the program more efficient
“We need to make sure that we use those Medicaid dollars effectively
If you look at the expansion in Medicaid spending in our country
it's certainly exploded in part because of the (Affordable Care Act) expansion,” said Rep
a Republican representing the 3rd Congressional district in western and southern Colorado. A staffer told Rep
Republicans have also accused Democrats and advocacy groups of fearmongering
“I think there’s groups out there that are trying to scare people, frankly for their own political purposes, to try and scare people into believing that there’s going to be all these massive Medicaid cuts,” said Republican Rep. Jeff Crank, who represents the 5th district around Colorado Springs, earlier this month on Fox 21
Hurd’s district are at risk of losing coverage; for Rep
Evans’ district the figure is more than 40,0000.
Young urged policymakers to not make assumptions about people getting services from Medicaid
saying he hears many using political talking points and catchphrases
“All ‘they don't work’ and ‘they're just taking advantage of a system’ or whatever
‘There's all kinds of fraud and abuse.’ Those are not substantiated claims
They need to dig deeper into that,” Young said
“They also need to understand the everyday grind
a loved one that is coping with challenges like my sister are going through.”
He pointed out that his sister is not part of the Medicaid expansion population created under the Affordable Care Act.But he said if deep cuts are made
hundreds of thousands of Coloradans could lose coverage and then still need to get care
“When we expanded Medicaid to include the expansion population
we promoted better care for people so that we could actually get better health outcomes and save money,” Young said
you go in the direction of poor healthcare outcomes for people and higher costs
I don't know in what universe that makes sense.”
Another state treasurer, Laura Montoya from New Mexico
described GOP criticisms of the program as gaslighting and careless
She said every government agency has an audit every year
allowing for programs to correct problems.
“The other part is if we're going to look at that mindset
why don't we look at all the tax write-offs?” she said
“How about we look at it from the perspective of not allowing people to have any tax breaks until we figure it out to see who's doing it the right way
The House spending bill passed earlier this month would cut more than $1 trillion in funding allocated by the committees responsible for Medicaid and SNAP benefits
That blueprint does not spell out any specific cuts
However experts believe the only way reductions of that size could be found would be by slashing the two programs
The call with the state treasurers was organized by Americans for Responsible Growth
a national advocacy group focused on “ensuring long-term sustainable economic growth
and protecting states' financial stability.”

This Vise Weighs 170 lbs And Needs A Hell Of A Workbench
If you have ever found an old vise at a swap meet
This video will show you how to restore one so you can give it a new life
And despite the fact that this bench vise weighs 170 lbs
the restoration is the same as any of vise of this style
And I know that folks are always arguing over new vs old tools and whether the older stuff is really better than the new
Better may not have anything to do with the age
but I know that a really good vise nowadays costs real money
if you can get one for the right price that is
could be the smart way to spend your money
I know I’m going to need a new vise in the near future
so I’m going to start looking for something that needs a little restoration love
Would your restore your own vise after watching this vide0
Restoring this huge 170lbs Prentiss 22 swivel jaw vise has been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time
A swivel jaw vise is one of the most useful things you can have in a shop
