A groovy relic from the stylish Italian guitar maker that sits in the sweet spot between art and utility
and highly worthy acquisitions for their looks
The circa-1960 Wandré Roby featured here sits in the sweet spot between art and utility
Whereas some Wandré models look more like a Salvador Dalí painting than a guitar
the Roby abounds with the maker’s signature features and esthetics
while it offers familiarity in form and function
The man behind Wandré guitars was born Antonio Pioli in Cavriago
nicknamed him Vandré – meaning “to go in reverse” in the regional dialect – for his eclectic tendencies
and the moniker became an entirely suitable brand for his guitars when Antonio started building them himself
Unlike so many Italian electric guitars that would follow
which were arguably “style first and functionality be damned,” Wandré guitars’ fashion-forward appearance potentially disguises the fact that they were made by a luthier who was heir to a great tradition in the craft
and who was serious about improving all aspects of the instrument in his work
Pioli was also a friend to both Dalí and Brigitte Bardot (his curvaceous B.B
And if his eccentric designs kept his guitars from becoming popular at the time
they eventually helped him establish a niche that has become valued and appreciated many years later
Miller recalls that he purchased his first Wandré Soloist model in the 1970s from a Colorado pawn shop for $50 and went back a year later to buy four more at the same price once he’d realized how great it actually played and sounded.
You’d likely have to pay a hundred times that price today for an example in decent condition, and perhaps significantly more than that for some of the rarest models, such as the Bikini (with a built-in amp) or the B.B
Though less dramatically styled in its lines than the more extreme designs
the Roby model sports the myriad quirks that have come to define Wandré guitars
It carries a trio of trapezoidal single-coil pickups made by Davoli
notably lively and slightly microphonic and the ideal enhancement to the guitar’s sonic personality
They are wired through a push-button switching system that allows individual on/off selection of each
The neck pickup is reversed and wired out-of-phase to add a funky edge to the sonic options
with a small metal knob to adjust the intonation position of each contact point within the tubes
it actually functions better than the “wrap-under” bridge found on the first year or so of Gibson Les Pauls in 1952 and early ’53
with the express purpose of avoiding warpage
and is covered with a thin adhesive plastic to present a warmer feel
most Wandrés sport a lot of plastic in their construction
although our Roby model does feature a slice of bird’s-eye maple on its top
the fingerboard is adorned with decorative and informative inlays: Every other one features an inscription that tells the guitar’s maker
while the image of some unknown rampant animal and two seemingly random shapes fill the remaining positions
Wandré guitars don’t come cheaply or very often at all these days
Should you have the chance to strap one on
you’ll not only stand out both visually and sonically but also enjoy a rare treat among vintage treasures

Just two of the many unique Wandrés in the collection
French guitar seller Guitare Collection has listed an incredible collection of vintage Wandrés on music retail website Reverb
The guitars were built by Italian luthier Antonio Vandrè Pioli, and acquired by Guitare Collection owner Daniel Zeiller. He told Reverb just how long he spent collecting Wandrés: “I have built this collection over nearly 50 years
I bought my first Wandré when I was just 18 years old
it was in flea markets that you had to go to find them
I caught the virus and kept looking for it and buying it.”
Reverb also asked Zeiller what his favourite guitar in the collection is: “I have a lot of them but I think the one I like best
Wandre was friends with Brigitte Bardot and Salvador Dalí—if you compare the signatures
it makes you wonder where Antonio Wandre learned to paint.”
Take a look at some of the guitars at this gallery at Reverb.com, and if you have a few thousand euro going spare, or just want to browse, take a look at the collection’s storefront

This electric guitar may look a bit battered
this guitar earned its own special footnote in music history – as the first guitar Jimi Hendrix ever played on British soil
Now the instrument is heading to auction with Gardiner Houlgate
where it’s expected to sell for up to £10,000 as part of a music memorabilia sale on September 14-15
Jimi Hendrix arrived in the U.K on September 24
having been spotted playing in New York by Chas Chandler
Chandler was looking to quit the band and become a manager
and when he saw the unknown Hendrix on stage at the Cafe Wha
and then set about finding him a gig for that evening
but he had one major problem – he needed a left-handed guitar
The pair set off in search of a suitable instrument
and their first stop was the West London flat of Soho blues musician Zoot Money
Money was a good friend of Chandler’s
having played with The Animals on their final U.S tour
and was a highly respected figure in the London music scene
Money’s band-mate (and future guitarist with The Police) Andy Summers lived in the flat below
but his instruments were out-of-bounds for the unknown American
“I couldn’t let him use one of Andy Summers guitars that were in the flat below because he would have killed me!” recalled Money
Hendrix picked up a late 1950s Wandre electric guitar that was laying around and started to play
Jimi liked the easy action of the instrument
and Money offered to restring it in reverse for him to use that night
as Hendrix famously joined the house band at the Scotch of St
James nightclub that evening for his first U.K performance
the guitar has remained in Money’s collection ever since
and retains the same strings Hendrix casually strummed more than 50 years ago

“It’s technically the best guitar there is,” Gary tells us
Italian luthier Antonio Vandrè Pioli created some of the most unique instruments of the 60s
which Gary confesses that he paid too much for
he acquired this Brigitte Bardot from France
“A guitar dealer friend of mine called me up and said: ‘I found one in a French music store
I’m calling Johnny Depp.’” he tells us in our interview
The guitar is an absolutely gorgeous one with its trapezoidal pickups
hinged aluminium ‘broom stick’ neck and an interchangeable headstock
“It’s technically the best guitar there is,” Gary says proudly

The 1960s Wandre electric guitar is being auctioned in Wiltshire on behalf of keyboardist Zoot Money
Hendrix flew to London in 1966 with Chas Chandler of The Animals and they went straight to Zoot's West London flat on the hunt for a left-handed guitar that Jimi could borrow
Although Hendrix allegedly played the Wandre guitar - and even said it had a "nice easy action" - he never used it in a gig
The guitar is being sold with a handwritten letter of provenance from Zoot Money
and is expected to fetch between £5,000 and £10,000
