By Joshua Encinias
Before Westend performed at the Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama, he played at EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival) Las Vegas
then hopped on a red-eye from Vegas to Atlanta with his tour manager Kyle Williams
“There was a maintenance issue with the next flight so we were planning to go right to the Hangout
which luckily we didn’t have to do,” says Westend (né Tyler Morris)
the Manhattan native of the Westend End Avenue neighborhood (hence the moniker) has consistently ranked in the top 10 best-selling artists on Beatport and boasts 30 million streams on Spotify
Although he studied public policy at Duke University
he has been creating music since high school when he attended The Bronx High School of Science
Westend recently moved to Williamsburg where he likes to live a normal life when he isn’t playing shows on Las Vegas speedways or the emerald coast beaches of Alabama
Joe’s Pizza and local halal food are the mainstays in his diet
with stops into Whole Foods to balance out the junk food
He stays active by playing tennis at the McCarren Tennis Center and basketball with friends in Long Island City

(Updated 9/27/23) Before unanimously voting on financing the massive WestEnd Alexandria project at the former Landmark Mall site
a majority of Alexandria City Council members said that they still dislike the name
Council unanimously approved a number of proposals on the 52-acre development, which will be devoted to the new Alexandria Hospital
and a multi-block town center with apartment buildings
But Foulger-Pratt’s WestEnd project is located within the larger West End neighborhood; akin to naming a development DelRay or OldTown
Foulger-Pratt has already branded the development and has no plans on changing the name
a name change is not being considered at this time,” Courtney Williams
One of those approved measures is a wayfinding sign program throughout the development
which Council members said will only confuse residents
Vice Mayor Amy Jackson said that the wayfinding signs will be confusing
“When you are putting in wayfinding signs saying ‘2.5 miles to the West End,’ and people saying
aren’t we in the West End?’ What West End is that?” Jackson said
“That’s what’s going to start happening.”
City Councilman Canek Aguirre said that he feels dismayed by the name
but we can’t tell people what to name things,” Aguirre said
“They’re going to name it what they want
But what this body can do is signal some of our displeasure behind what the name is
we still want to see everything happen… but the name is problematic.”
Council Member Alyia Gaskins said that WestEnd signage will be confusing
since the neighborhood nickname is tied to a geographic area
“The West End for so long in this city has meant a geographic area
not a specific development,” Gaskins said
“That is something that we need to be thinking about.”
Council Member Kirk McPike said that the name hurts other organizations with “West End” in their name
“All of that gets destroyed for them by this development
which is going to take the name of half our city and apply it to one piece of land,” McPike said
“We would never allow a development on the east side of the city call itself Old Town
We would never allow a development in the middle of the city to call itself Del Ray
but we’re allowing this development to take the name of half the city and apply it to themselves
but it was wrong and I’m really disappointed that we allowed that to happen.”
Councilman John Taylor Chapman said that the issue will be problematic for the city
“We are now going to have to focus on this,” Chapman said
“We are going to have community members and folks who have grown up in the region and have gotten to know what the West End does
and signage is going to be an issue for us
We need to be very clear with them about the problems that creates for staff and the city.”
Council also approved the creation of the Landmark Community Development Authority
which will set a special tax rate for the development in order to pay the city back for $141 million in financing
will be located in a central plaza on block F
a two-story 978-square-foot building on block N
would include a 270-square-foot seasonal ice-skating shop and a public restroom

3 News Now Anchor Serese Cole found the perfect place to do that and enjoy some delicious food
The owners call it an upscale cocktail lounge
which is partially how they came up with the name
This week's Cheap Eats takes us to WestEnd Cocktails and Appetizers
We try to get up on the wall as well," said owner Jim Mumgaard
We've even been voted best martinis in Omaha a couple of times," Jim shared
WestEnd is also known for what it calls gourmet appetizers
Serese: How many appetizers do you have on the menu
Chef Jesus Carrasco showed off the appetizers WestEnd customers can't seem to get enough of — beginning with the Baked Shrimp Havarti
Serese: Why do you think this is so popular
The buttery shrimp is combined with their house seasoning
"We toss it in our salamander and let the cheese get melted and caramelized and it's just going to melt all on there," Chef Jesus explained
"I like to get it out as soon as we can to the table so they can see the bubbling of the cheese," he smiled
The Clothesline Bacon is like a piece of art
Each piece hung — one by one — over their house-made pickles
"Another simple but much-loved appetizer," Chef Jesus smiled
The Cheeseburgers Sliders are a WestEnd favorite
"Sometimes on a busy day - the whole thing is covered in patties," Chef Jesus explained
The patties are smashed and served on a buttered brioche bun
It comes with their secret WestEnd sauce and all your favorite toppings
there's a Buffalo Chicken Slider and the Char-Grilled Chicken Wings
Co-owner Jim Mumgaard talked strategy about how to eat the Shrimp Havarti
You want to make sure you dip it in there," he advised
How fun and you have to have a pickle with it apparently
Jim: Our house-made pickles are marinated and the grease from the flavored bacon — it just drips down on them
"We don't think there's anybody in Omaha that does what we do," Mumgaard said with confidence
WestEnd is located at 1529 South 203rd Street
Go to thewestendomaha.com for hours and details about their Sunday Brunch and Martini Flights
It can hold up to 75 people and be rented out

Forbes contributors publish independent expert analyses and insights
Lisa Kocay covers electronic dance music.Follow AuthorSep 29
Tech house has been blowing up the dancefloor since the early 1990s
The genre—a subset of house music combining techno and house elements by using melodic synths
steady beats and driving basslines—has resurged into the mainstream in recent years
“I think it's a good example of my sound,” Westend
“I want to make feel-good music that you could listen to at a club or a festival
you could go to the gym and throw it on or listen to it in your car.”
“Dive In” is the first release on Morris’ label, TRACE AMOUNTS
he launched the imprint because he has established a big enough platform
He says he plans to sign music by numerous artists as well as release his records on it
“I felt like it was the time to create a little bit more [of a] creative identity for myself and have another brand to manage,” the producer says
that's another creative outlet that I really wanted to tap into.”
Morris’ love for the Big Apple extends even further: His moniker is an ode to his cherished side of the city
which is responsible for cultivating his musical upbringing during his teenage years
He even attended Bronx High School of Science
the same institute synth inventor Robert Moog went to
sparking Morris’ interest in dance music even more
Beyond his sonic abilities, Morris is the founder of Kick & Bass
an online production school and community he started during the pandemic to source income because spinning at clubs wasn’t an option
It was suggested to him that he do a music production lesson over Zoom
thus beginning his entry into teaching “tech house 101.” The banger creator then began getting requests from producers all around the globe
Kick & Bass was held on Zoom for two years before becoming a discord
allowing artists to make a specific genre of their choice
The discord is available via a monthly membership
which provides access to Morris and coaches posting weekly new videos and providing feedback on members’ music
“One of the big issues as a producer is you make a track and
you don't like to say there's right and wrong in music,” Morris says
“but there are definitely ways to do things in a better way.”
"I would say one piece of advice would probably be trust the process and don't doubt yourself
More because I think I used to think a lot that maybe I was not talented in a strictly musical sense," Westend says
"I never really played any instruments growing up
and I really wanted to be a deejay and producer
I've been doing this for almost 11 years now
So I would just say don't worry about what others are doing
just trust that if you work hard and you really want this thing
He has also embarked on his first headlining North American tour by the same name as his label
His upcoming set at Los Angeles’ renowned Academy venue will be his first open-to-close set
which is when a deejay performs for the entirety of the show
The performance takes place on September 30
best seen in his illustrious career to date
Morris demonstrates his success through his production prowess as well as his ability to teach
release on globally acclaimed labels and overcome challenges during his growth as an artist

Ownership is converting the bar into a Ranalli’s pizzeria
a sports bar near the United Center that’s been a popular pre- and postgame stop for Blackhawks and Bulls fans
will close this weekend after 14 years on the Near West Side
COVID-19 kept fans away from the arena the last two seasons
while cancelled sports events across the country meant fewer games for the bar to show on live TV
will convert WestEnd into a second location of Ranalli’s
its pizzeria that’s been in Lincoln Park for 45 years
A spokesperson for Four Corners reasons there’s been a large demand to-go food during the pandemic
and Ranalli’s menu excels at carryout options
collegiate sports affiliations remain important
and WestEnd was one of the biggest bars for University of Michigan fans
A news release promises Ranalli’s West Loop will remain loyal to the Wolverines
There will still be 33 TVs and a 92-seat sidewalk cafe that management says will be dog friendly
The transformation won’t be a mere name and menu change
Four Corners has brought in noted restaurant design firm Studio K to brighten up the space with modern fixtures and furnishings
Artist Anthony Lewellen will decorate the dining room
and there’s also a mural planned for the inside
in the middle of Michael Jordan’s tenure with the Bulls
The area around the arena did not have many bars at the time
By the time WestEnd opened more than a decade later
many bars and restaurants had already sprouted up near the Madhouse on Madison
But neighbors considered the spot a reliable place to chat with friends and nosh on fried appetizers
The bar offered shuttles to and from the UC
Ranalli’s West Loop should be ready by the time the Bulls and Hawks start their seasons
Ranalli’s West Loop, 1326 W. Madison Street, planned for an October opening.

“I worked at a tech company for two years, producing at night and playing shows on the weekend. This is when I started the Westend name and I’ve been doing it ever since,” he remembers. “NYC brings in so many amazing artists of all genres to a wide variety of spaces. Brooklyn has become such a capital of underground electronic music over the last five years. It’s hard not to get inspired while living here.”
There are plenty of new Westend productions on the horizon. “I’ve got a VIP of ‘Party Time’ that I’ll be releasing soon that I’ve gotten a lot of questions about, and my remix for Lauv and Troye Sivan is set to come out soon, so stay tuned for that.”

The company spearheading a proposed redevelopment of the Fairmont Southampton says changes in a special development order are not “tokenism” and include key environmental and community gains
Westend Properties Ltd issued a statement to “set the record straight” after Craig Cannonier, the Shadow Minister of Tourism, said the development had been scaled back simply to garner public support
The Bermuda National Trust also said the new plans appeared to be “tokenism”
suggesting it was “the game plan all along to propose something so outrageous that any scaling back would be considered a win”
Westend hit back and a spokeswoman said: “Despite recent claims in the media to the contrary
we would like to reiterate that our strategy was never to apply for higher density with the intention of then ‘settling’ for fewer units
“We do not view this process as a game and have not submitted a revised application as a ‘publicity stunt’
“Rather ― and as we have stated repeatedly ― we would like to start the hotel renovations as soon as possible; going through the SDO review process twice is only resulting in further delay.”
She added: “The revisions made to the SDO application were based on the feedback we received through the public consultation process and from the Department of Planning
“Our goal is to present a proposal that will satisfy all parties and we believe we have achieved this objective through the revised SDO application.”
Westend initially sought permission for 147 residential units and 114 tourism units on the property
in addition to refurbishing the hotel building
The new plans proposed dropping the total units from 261 to 250
Tourism units were increased from 114 to 159
and the residential units proposed have dropped to 91
meaning the number of tourism bedrooms will increase from 311 to 441
The Westend spokeswoman added that the company also planned to improve surrounding traffic conditions at its own expense
This would include the realignment of South Road to eliminate its S-bend and establishing a three-way traffic light system at the hotel’s access road junction with Middle Road and Lighthouse Road
Westend has also pledged to add improvements to the Railway Trail such as installing security lighting and a ramp for cyclists
It said that it would ensure the “active preservation” two Historic Protection Areas on Turtle Hill and install natural seating
The spokeswoman added that about 60 per cent of the property would remain a green space
She said that the six-storey buildings initially proposed would be replaced by two and three-storey buildings redesigned to “reduce massing and integrate better into the landscape”, however according to the revised SDO plans remain for four-storey buildings
The Westend spokeswoman said: “It must be emphasised that this rebalancing will not result in any further concessions from the government.”
She said that, regarding Gencom CEO Karim Alibhai’s comments that “everything that could go wrong has been going wrong” with this project
Westend was confident in its ability to reopen the hotel
In an interview with trade publication Hotel Investment Today
Mr Alibhai was quoted as saying on the Fairmont Southampton: “That one has been not so easy to execute on because the markets
The Westend spokeswoman said: “There’s no denying that global events
to rising interest rates and capital markets volatility
have made embarking on major construction projects in the hospitality industry extremely challenging in the past couple of years
This project was not unaffected by these external forces.”
after purchasing the hotel in December 2019
they hoped to keep it open throughout 2020 before closing for 12 to 18 months and reopening for 2022
But she added that “the onslaught of the pandemic” closed it down and declining market conditions kept it shuttered
The spokeswoman said: “Despite these unforeseeable challenges
we remain optimistic about this project and are looking forward to getting started on the development so we can share Bermuda’s breathtaking beauty and unmatched hospitality with the rest of the world.”

Eric Ripert announced today that he's pulling out of his Washington, DC, restaurant Westend Bistro by Eric Ripert. Ripert's team opened in DC five years ago, but Washington Post critic Tom Sietsema reports that Ripert's name will be dropped from signage as of January 1
It seems that the restaurant will go on operating as Westend Bistro under its new chef Devin Bozkaya
and Ripert tells the critic that it's all on good terms
He also says he'll now turn his focus to "Le Bernardin and other projects" — including perhaps something new in New York
Ripert still has Ritz-Carlton-housed restaurants in Philadelphia and Grand Cayman

Timetables for the Fairmont Southampton project are “becoming critical”
it was claimed in a letter to the planning department from the agency acting for the hotel’s owner
said Westend Properties had requested the presentation of its special development order proposals to the Development Applications Board as soon as possible
he noted that the applicant accepted many details of its plan were yet to be “worked out” but pointed out that conditions could be attached to any SDO approval
An earlier SDO application was submitted in April — seeking approval for a maximum of 261 units — and the amended version followed in July
Mr Adwick wrote that “the SDO process has taken a significant amount of time to get this far
and the timelines for the project are becoming critical”
He added: “The applicant therefore requests that the SDO proposals are presented to the Development Applications Board at the earliest opportunity.”
was in reply to correspondence from the planning department four days earlier
when it was recommended that amendments were made to certain documents to address discrepancies
include appropriate titles or attribution and provide further information
Response was also invited to submissions made during a public consultation process
The planning department’s letter explained: “A detailed assessment of each topic of the EIS [Environmental Impact Statement] together with all other relevant considerations will be made separately in due course in the form of a report to the Development Applications Board upon receipt of your response and updated documentation.”
It said earlier that the EIS should confirm at which stages of the construction phase each of the SDO’s proposed community benefits would be carried out and completed
A revised EIS said that conservation management plans — to include a programme of invasive culling as well as native and endemic planting — for three areas of the resort would be submitted for approval with the detailed planning application for phase 1
It explained that the addition of ten bluebird boxes
could be installed during phase 1 but that “due to reconfiguration of the golf course during phase 2
there will need to be a reinstallation of some boxes during phase 2”
A potential realignment to straighten South Road where it borders the property and to improve the camber was proposed for completion by the end of phase 1
“but will be contingent on co-ordination” with the Government’s Highways Section
The same timescale and condition were suggested for the installation of a three-way traffic light system where the northern exit and entrance road to the hotel meets Middle Road and Lighthouse Hill
Improvements to the Railway Trail that include the provision of a ramp where there is a steep staircase and the addition of “discrete” lighting would be carried out during phase 1
Mr Adwick said in a letter dated July 26 that the construction period for phase 1 of the proposed development was expected to be 2025 to 2030
He added then that phase 2 was anticipated to run from 2033 to 2036 and phase 3 work would be carried out in 2039 to 2040
Another letter from the agent on behalf of Westend Properties
included comments offered in reply to representations from members of the public and environmental groups
Mr Adwick wrote: “Responses tend to focus on the total number of units proposed rather than the revised composition of the development as a whole and question the need for the amount of development proposed
should be interpreted in terms of what is required to ensure the success of the Fairmont Southampton resort into the future
“The SDO is required as this will necessarily involve extraordinary development options rather than those limited by the arithmetic behind zoning policies.”
An SDO granted in 2009 gave planning permission in principle for 71 fractional tourism units
37 residential villas and 22 town homes at the resort
70 per cent of the units are intended to be tourism units linked to the hotel
“This compares with 44 per cent in the original proposal and 54 per cent in the 2009 SDO development
“This uplift in tourism units translates into a 40 per cent increase in hotel bedrooms at the property
which would be a significant boost to hotel bed count in Bermuda as well as potentially expanding employment opportunities at the hotel
“It seems there is some scepticism among objectors that this is achievable but the upgrade in the hotel and facilities is geared towards achieving the full potential of the property.”
The letter said that several respondents were concerned about what they perceived as a downgrading of the resort’s golf course
It added: “The details of the reconfiguration of the golf course
including such matters as its total length
but it is intended to maintain the course as a high-quality 18-hole par 3 golf course.”
Access arrangements for a group of buildings among the proposal’s Southern Hill Top Villas “have not been finalised”
that the similar development approved under the 2009 SDO took access to Lighthouse Road via the right of way.”
Mr Adwick wrote: “WPL acknowledges that there are many details to be worked out as that is the nature of a proposal that seeks approval in principle
the process allows for conditions to be attached to any approval requiring detailed submissions of specific types of development or mitigation schemes or other enhancements before construction can proceed
“The applicant fully expects that should approval of the SDO be granted
such conditions are likely to be a feature of the permission and would abide by such conditions.”
Deutsche Bank is to acquire Westend Retail Park in Blanchardstown, in Dublin 15, from property firm Green Reit for €148 million, marking the German bank's first foray into the Irish commercial real estate market.
The deal comes less than two years after the sale of the adjoining Blanchardstown Shopping Centre to US investment group Blackstone for €950 million.
The park, one of the first open-use retail parks in the Republic, was originally developed by the Cosgrave Property Group.
Green Reit acquired it as part of its purchase of the so-called Sapphire Portfolio in 2014.*
The park, which comprises 27,900sq m (300,000sq ft) of retail and other commercial space, was recently valued at €147.1 million. Existing tenants include Next, Heatons, New Look, Lidl, Nike, Gap and Argos.
It generates an annual rent of €8.5 million, which represents about 11 per cent of Green Reit’s total annual rent roll.
Deutsche Bank recently bought the Diagonal Mar shopping centre in Barcelona for €493 million.
Green Reit said it had exchanged papers for the sale of the park with DSW, Deutsche Bank’s investment arm, and the deal was expected to be completed by the end of next month.
It said proceeds from the sale will go towards reducing the company’s revolving credit facility, which will give it access to debt capital for investment in other projects, namely its Central Park office park in South Dublin and at Horizon Logistics Park, adjacent to Dublin Airport, Green Reit said.
Chief executive Pat Gunne said: "The disposal of Westend Retail Park, representing a 55 per cent profit on cost, is in line with our stated strategy of recycling a portion of our capital to invest in higher return development projects in Horizon Logistics Park and Central Park, while maintaining balance sheet discipline below our self-imposed 25 per cent gearing level."

“The West End is the next big thing,” Munich scene spotters have been saying for a while now. The former working class quarter does indeed play host to a number of exciting— at least gastronomically-speaking— addresses. These include well-known hunts like Marais Soir, brand new joints like Izakaya, and restaurants that fall somewhere in between, like our newly discovered Westend Factory.
The steak restaurant in Sheraton Westpark Hotel at Heimeranplatz admittedly does not have the most scenic location. But if you hurry- as we did- from the metro exit directly to the restaurant door, you don’t have to bother with the view of high-rises and the Mittlerer Ring.
The Westend Factory has presented an industrial-inspired look since October 2016. The menu uses a sharing concept with the focus on one thing: Meat! And not just any, but the particularly tender wares of a local butcher in Rosenheim. New head chef Frederic Kerkhoff explains how they prioritise regional suppliers and seasonal ingredients.
He wants to help his guests try new things and at the same time rediscover almost forgotten dishes from their childhood. Thus, you can find bold creations on the menu, such as the “Veal Head / Veal tongue / Garden Vegetables / Wild Herbs” and favourites from grandma’s kitchen, like apple cake- here combined with craft beer zabaione and frozen yogurt.
Curious, we take part in the experiment and order a set menu from the daily recommendation. A preliminary oven-fresh loaf of spiced bread lands on our table with the dip and knife to serve ourselves.
The following appetiser trio of the aforementioned veal head, a red beetroot tartar with goats cheese, and Bavarian ceviche is not just generously portioned, but delicious to boot.
That leads to us- despite our ravenous hunger at the beginning- having hardly any room for the main dish of Bavarian porterhouse steak, which also arrives at the table on a cutting board with a meat fork and knife for cutting. A ring of cute enamel dishes containing mashed potato, vegetable potpourri, sauces, and wild herb salad surround the dish.
The presentation is incredible, and the quality so great that we couldn’t do without at least sampling everything. The finely paired side dishes leave a particularly good impression on us, but unfortunately we have to return the lion’s share of the meat- it was excellent, but just too much for us.
A glance at our neighbouring table confirms our suspicions: the men are in seventh steak heaven here at Westend Factory! And they probably aren’t having any problems with the generous portions laid out for sharing.
We’ll definitely be back- hungrier than every and with more guests in tow!
