Text description provided by the architects. The De Warande master plan provides a dynamic and cohesive framework for a multiplicity of activities with suffi cient fl exibility to respond to future changes and developments.
The plan focuses above all on experiencing the area as a park. A distinction has been made between two areas: a park with recreational functions along routes, and a strip with a high density of sports and relaxation functions. A large part of De Warande was behind fencing of all shapes and sizes. For much of the year a large part of De Warande is not accessible to the public. The superfl uous fences have been removed to turn De Warande back into a park.
© Filip DujardinSustainability and energy are integral parts of the master plan
Construction of the new sports hall and phase 1 of the park will lay the foundations for a smart grid
A combined heat and power plant has been installed to meet the heating requirements of the indoor and outdoor swimming pools
The plant will further provide some of the electricity needed for the swimming pool and other functions on the domain
The sports hall has been equipped with an air/water heat pump for fl oor heating and a solar boiler to produce hot water for the sanitary facilities
Toilets are being fl ushed with rainwater to make the most economical use possible of water
The superfl uous rainwater of the buildings and the metalled surfaces around the sports hall will be used to keep the pond water at the right level
The car park has been constructed with drainage bricks enabling rain to infi ltrate the site

the Catholic University of Leuven sacked researcher Barbara Van Dyck because of her public support for the actions of Field Liberation Movement (FLM) in the context of an action against a genetically modified potato field in Wetteren
Whether one agrees with the aim and tactic of this action or not
the sanction is disproportionate and a breach of academic freedom and freedom of speech
We appeal to academics worldwide to resist this dismissal and to sign this open letter
The Petition:No dismissal for reseacher Barbara Van Dyck
On Friday June 3th we learned that Barbara Van Dyck was sacked because of her solidarity with the activists of the Field Liberation Movement in the context of an action against a test field with Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
because it is disproportionate and a breach of labour law and the principle of academic freedom and freedom of speech
Barbara Van Dyck participated in the action in Wetteren during her private time (on a Sunday) and not during service
Moreover she is not discharged for committed actions or trespassing
but because of her solidarity with the activists and her public support for their actions
We question the reasons of the University to dismiss her
the University breaches one of the core values that are central in her own mission statements: academic freedom
We like to remind the authorities that academic freedom does not only imply the possibility to do independent research
but also the individual freedom of the academic to ‘take a critical stance towards certain tendencies or parts of society
This individual freedom is the corner stone of our academic identity’ (rector speech opening academic year 2003[i])
A similar reasoning we find in the UNESCO recommendations
26: ‘all higher-education teaching personnel should enjoy freedom of thought
conscience (…) They should not be hindered or impeded in exercising their civil rights as citizens
including the right to contribute to social change through freely expressing their opinion (…)
They should not suffer any penalties simply because of the exercise of such rights.’[ii]
Moreover the university breaches the democratic basic right that is foundational to our society: freedom of speech
By discharging a researcher for her sympathies with this action
the K.U/Leuven inscribes itself in a new climate of criminalisation of activism and even the criminalisation of sympathy for activism
She is sanctioned for her open sympathies and solidarity with the Field Liberation front
One has not to agree with the target and tactics of the action to recognize its broader social relevance: what is socially just and ecologically sustainable agriculture
Which role gmo’s play in this and how do we spread research finances in a equitable way over different options
The narrowing down of this action as a deed of violence
shifts the attention from a most necessary social debate
The presence of scientists in both camps proves that also within the scientific community there is no consensus on the necessity and value of gmo’s
We call on the university authorities to keep its trust in critical reflection and the social commitment of its researchers
We call upon the personnel of the KULeuven and the international academic community tot protest against this discharge
This case has ramifications that surpass the individual case of Barbara Van Dijck
as it is about the future of science (and its link with industry)
the principles of academic freedom and freedom of speech

In the East-Flemish municipality of Wetteren
a freight train derailment caused a number of wagons carrying chemical products to explode
This caused an inferno and the release of toxic substances in the air
but in the afternoon the governor of East Flanders
told a press conference that 2 people had died
but several dozen were brought to hospital after inhaling toxic fumes
The news of the victims came somewhat as a surprise more than 12 hours after the disaster
Mr Briers could not confirm the exact cause of death at the press conference
but the victim probably died after inhaling toxic fumes
He lived close to the area where the disaster happened
and close to a place where different sewage systems come together
Mr Briers said that air samples taken in the area this morning did not reveal alarming levels
and people were advised to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors closed
the toxic substances were taken to the sewage system by the water used to fight the blaze
toxic fumes could have entered people's houses despite the windows and doors being closed
3 were in a life-threatening condition on Saturday afternoon
The accident was followed by a number of explosions with some wagons immediately catching fire
The train was carrying chemical substances from the Netherlands to the port of Ghent. The chemicals are dangerous and can pose a threat to people's health, explained Christian Vandevoorde of the local fire services: "It's acrylonitrile
It can cause breathing problems." Other problems include headache
but measurements showed that there was no immediate danger for local residents
a safety perimeter of 300 and later 500 metres was installed and as a prevention
Rail services between Gent-Sint-Pieters and Aalst
and between Gent-Sint-Pieters and Dendermonde were disrupted
An investigation has been started into the cause of the accident
Thierry Sarasyn has set a world record after the Belgian motorcycle journalist visited 15 countries in 22 hours
A prominent motorcycle journalist has broken a world record for visiting the most amount of countries while riding a motorcycle in one 24-hour period
Thierry Sarasyn started his ride in southern Poland
strategically chosen because of its close proximity to a significant number of countries
before heading north and ending his trip in the Netherlands
Thierry racked up an impressive 1,367 miles and completed the feat in just 22 hours
Making this final point all the more impressive is the fact that prior to the trip Thierry had set himself the goal of completing the journey
yet breaking no speed limits and no local road traffic laws
That meant he had to basically ride 1,300 miles
through different countries all with varying traffic laws
all while he had an imaginary IAM instructor breathing down his neck
The bike Theirry chose for the ride was a safe bet for any looking to clock some big miles, quickly and in comfort; the Kawasaki Versys 1000
The bike was prepped by Bridgestone prior to the run with new tyres
and Motul supplied the oil and Theirry packed some extra fuel just in case he was caught short
RideApart reports that a mixture of Immodium
Isotonic drinks and astronaut food got him through his 22-hour marathon
The record Theirry has broken is actually one he already held after he visited 13 countries in 2022 while riding an MV Agusta Super Veloce
Also, If you recognise Thierry’s name it might be because he’s done some launches for Visordown.com when the UK was in full lockdown, you can check out his review of the Triumph Tiger Sport 660 right here

The Apdikt restaurant in Steinfort, in the west of the country, run by Mathieu Van Wetteren, is the Grand Duchy’s latest addition to the guide for 2024.
It is one of nine restaurants in Luxembourg to have been awarded one Michelin star, the other eight of which also featured in last year’s guide.
They include three restaurants in the capital
and five dotted around the rest of the country - La Distillerie (Bourglinster)
Fani (Roeser) and Guillou Campagne (Schouweiler)
Just one restaurant in the country was awarded two stars
A visibly moved Van Wetteren said he wanted to “continue excellence”
as he gave a short speech during the award ceremony for the Belgium and Luxembourg guide on Monday

Federal police have arrested three men on a bus travelling from Lille (France) to Brussels following a call from a fellow passenger who overheard them discussing carrying out an attack
passengers and luggage have been inspected
Three Flixbus passengers were arrested on Thursday after a fellow passenger overheard them discussing a possible terrorist attack and called the police
which was travelling from Lille in France to Brussels
is being inspected by the army bomb disposal unit DOVO
Passengers were taken off the bus one by one and examined
Their luggage was also removed and inspected
About 40 people were travelling on the bus
The presence of DOVO is standard practice and does not necessarily mean an explosive device has been found
“The report was taken very seriously immediately,” police spokesperson An Berger told VRT
The bus was pulled off the road near Wetteren (East Flanders)
Ms Berger: “We will now investigate further
The driver of the bus checked all passengers’ identity documents before they boarded and noted nothing suspicious
