the new season for soil-grown chicory has started again
which is now grown almost exclusively in Belgium
it is mostly still chicory from last year's carrots
but we are certainly pleased with the quality," says Herman Lion of Lathouwers & Co
this is one of the busier periods of the year
as the supply of field-grown chicory coincides with hydroponic chicory
"It's still a bit of a waiting game to see how things will turn out," the trader explains
"The soil-grown chicory from last year's carrots doesn't have the same structure as the new carrots
we expect the first chicory from new carrots
Everything in this cultivation depends on the weather in the coming period."
Herman says the company definitely can't complain about demand
you see that people are more in the mood for chicory
the supply is a bit lower because there were many climatic issues in the spring
which are also used for hydroponic cultivation
We've been seeing lower supply and higher prices in hydroponic cultivation for some time
and that trend is continuing with field-grown chicory."
is also driving up prices for field-grown chicory
we can still meet customer requests for now
We will have to wait and see how the new carrots perform in the fields
I've heard from a few growers that they seem to be coming in smaller than usual
but it's too early to tell." The field-grown chicory season will continue until around next April
that also depends on whether there are still carrots available
recently launching their "Schil-Mij-Nietjes" line
"These are specially selected potatoes that combine convenience with nutritional value
The unique aspect of these potatoes is that they do not need to be peeled
This skin is tasty and contains extra vitamins
making them a healthier choice than conventional peeled potatoes," Herman explains
"We noticed a market demand for this type of convenience."
"Schil-Mij-Nietjes sets itself apart from regular supermarket varieties through our careful selection of potato varieties with thin skins and uniform sizes
and we can guarantee quick and even cooking times
This makes them ideal for various preparations
you save time in the kitchen without compromising on flavor
or quality—perfect for anyone looking to quickly prepare a healthy meal."

The five-star action at the 2024-edition of the Brussels Stephex Masters in Wolvertem
kicked off on Thursday with a home win for the host nation's own Gilles Thomas (BEL) and the 10-year-old Elfra Van Beek Z (El Salvador x Vagabond de La Pomme) in the CSIO5* 1.50m presented by EquiHome
The class was the first qualifier for Sunday's Rolex Grand Prix
presented by Audi – and was judged as a Table A against the clock
Out of the field of the 56 horse-and-rider combinations at start
Thomas and Elfra Van Beek took the win with a time of 66.42 seconds
ahead of Natalie Dean (USA) and Oasis van de Bucxtale (Quinn vd Heffinck x Skippy II) in second in 66.61
really suit Elfra," Thomas said in a press release from Brussels Stephex Masters
So I had no doubts about entering him in this first qualifier
Elfra Van Beek Z is 10 years old and has been with me for three years
I also rode him in the first qualifier for the CSIO5* Rolex Grand Prix
Gilles Thomas has now qualified for Sunday's CSIO5* Rolex Grand Prix
Luna van het Dennehof (Prince van de Wolfsakker x Quidam de Revel)
My original plan was to compete with her in tomorrow’s qualifier
But since I’ve already earned my place thanks to today’s win
Olivier Perreau (FRA) and GL Events Faustine Sauvage (Kannan x Ivanohe Sauvage) placed third in the CSIO5* 1.50m presented by EquiHome after clocking a time of 67.45 seconds
Olivier Philippaerts (BEL) on Poppemieke Jw van de Moerhoeve (Vigo d'Arsouilles x Diamant de Semilly) and Yuri Mansur (BRA) aboard Fifty Fifty Semilly (Diamant de Semilly x Heartbreaker) followed in fourth
with both riders stopping the clock on exactly 67.87 seconds.
I photograph objects found in people's basements
A surprising collection of prosthetic devices
Through these kept items a portrait of an era emerges
everyday objects as a capsule of time of society
remnants of social aspiration and technological development
and yet we all somehow share an emotional connection
as we evolve further into our throwaway society
'98 objects found in my mother-in-law's-basement' offers an almost forensic photographic record of an era
By isolating the objects away from the basement and its clutter
Claude Lévi-Strauss is validated: ’Objects are what matter
Only they carry the evidence that throughout the centuries
something really happened among human beings'
The project originally started out in the basement of my mother-in-law and expanded from there (hence the title)
Images of 450 objects from over 20 basements (at various locations in Belgium) are available
first of all who wants to miss out on a chance to see the crane
the man in charge of Intel's construction -- and the man who introduced the President last week -- the crane is not only huge
the Chandler crane is indeed an impressive feat of engineering
Intel says its parts fill up 250 truckloads
and it's big enough to lift the 24,000 tons of rebar and 25,000 tons of structural steel going into Fab 42
When Calder first heard about the Chandler crane
he was under the impression that his crane
nobody at Intel was quite sure who had the bigger crane: Chandler or Hillsboro
Or as they affectionately call it: their badass crane
"It was our version of Taipei 101 or the Space Needle
it's big regardless of how far away you are from it," says Jason Waxman
the general manager of Intel's High Density Computing Data Center Group
"They say some cities struggle to have a defining characteristic in their skyline; for a while ours was the crane."
The folks at Hillsboro weren't eager to concede their title to Chandler
"There was this little bit of mano-a-mano between the two construction sites," Calder admits
the company that built the Hillsboro crane
Chandler actually has a bigger crane than Hillsboro
The Lampson crane has a 460-foot boom -- a jib extension stretches it to 560 feet -- but it comes with better moves
"The Lampson Transi-Lift LTL-2600 is the world’s largest land based mobile crane," says Karen Lampson
"That means that our crane can pick and carry a load whereas the Sarens crane can only pick the load
backward or sideways the way the Transi-Lift can."
All my-crane-is-bigger-than-your-crane rivalry aside
Intel's Calder says he was proud to hear Obama talk about Fab 42
"Any time you can have the leader of the free world highlight the work we do and what it takes to build these Fabs today is great," he says
the largest land-based crane isn't nearly as cool as the largest land-based mobile crane!"
It is the essential source of information and ideas that make sense of a world in constant transformation
The WIRED conversation illuminates how technology is changing every aspect of our lives—from culture to business
The breakthroughs and innovations that we uncover lead to new ways of thinking
which in cycling circles means only one thing: it’s time for Opening Weekend – the annual curtain raiser to the cobbled classics campaign and
will sharpen their elbows and become reacquainted with Flanders’ famous cobbled bergs at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
Still referred to by purists by its previous
both names were derived from local newspapers)
semi-classic Omloop features some of cycling’s most famous climbs on its menu – including the fabled Muur van Geraardsbergen – and usually acts as an appetite whetting amuse-bouche before the more prestigious action to come in April
the men’s and women’s pelotons take on the somewhat less challenging
but still pretty cobbly Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne and Omloop van het Hageland
and some of the most passionate (and drunk) fans anywhere in the cycling world
> Flandriens, fries, and fighting for position: the beautiful brutality of the Tour of Flanders
Opening Weekend is sure to incite the same old
‘Put the Muur and Bosberg combo back in its rightful place at the Tour of Flanders’ (This one I can fully get behind.)
Another of Opening Weekend’s sacred traditions
was Tom Boonen’s annual attack on the Taaienberg
and bumpy hill described by the three-time Tour of Flanders winner as “my climb”
One of the greatest cobbled classics riders of all time
Tommeke famously never actually tasted success at Omloop
despite several close calls (and one embarrassing defeat to a heavily outnumbered Ian Stannard in 2015)
manage to win the following day’s rendezvous in Kuurne three times
leg warmers ditched at the side of the road and roared on by the frite-munching
always marked cycling’s first sign of spring
Such was Boonen’s intrinsic relationship with that particular hill – nicknamed
a bronze statue of one of Flanders’ greatest sons was unveiled near its summit
Trotse Tom Boonen onthult zijn standbeeld op zijn Taaienberg: "Afgietsel van mijn eigen benen, geen lachertje" https://t.co/5wLZFE9suo pic.twitter.com/wxGo2qtGgf

the peloton will have to wait another month to race past Belgium’s most famous set of pins immortalised in bronze
with the Boonenberg missing from this year’s Omloop route
unique statues of a sporting icon we’ve ever seen
we decided to mark Opening Weekend by taking a brief tour of Belgium’s wonderful
and street names dedicated to the country’s greatest two-wheeled heroes
so we thought we’d limit our collection to some of the most eye-catching or unusual statues
But they are the most famous legs in Belgium after all
“It’s not your typical statue of an ex-pro,” Tommeke said of his unusual tribute
To create the bronze casts for the ‘Boonen Beenen’ (the imaginatively titled ‘Boonen’s Legs’)
the 42-year-old former world champion – who said last month that he’s considering a return to racing
but on the gravel bike – had to stand on each leg for three hours
Now that’s the level of commitment needed to become the joint-greatest Ronde rider of all time… And to puzzle any unsuspecting riders slogging up the Taaienberg
What: A typical representation of the hard
just caught off at the thighs for some reason
how do you follow a statue of just a pair of legs
By heading to a statue with barely any legs
Jef Demuysere had a stellar career in the 1920s and 1930s
finishing on the podium of the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia twice each
while taking stage wins in both grand tours and winning the Tour’s mountains prize
He was also a Belgian national cyclocross champion and won Milan-San Remo in 1934
an impressive feat given the Italian hegemony over La Primavera at the time
unveiled in 2007 to mark the centenary of his birth in his hometown of Wervik
captures the essence of both the era (note the goggles and the inner tube wrapped around the torso) and the hardworking
Perhaps Jef and Tommeke could team up and create an unbeatable statue
If anyone asked you to define Flemish cycling culture
you could do a lot worse than pointing them to a picture of Briek Schotte
A double winner of both the world championships and the Tour of Flanders
and a second place finisher behind Gino Bartali at the brutal 1948 Tour de France
Schotte was one of the great cyclists of the immediate post-war era
he epitomised what Belgian cycling fans call ‘the Flandrien’ – barrel-chested
face weather beaten (like the farmers who cheered him on at the roadsides)
hammer-at-the-pedals riding style and a relentless attitude
He also characterised the modesty at the heart of Flemish identity
In Harry Pearson’s excellent exploration of cycling’s Flemish heartlands
a local told the author that when his hometown of Kanegem decided to honour him with a statue
but on two conditions: it must be no bigger than life size
the first Belgian winner of the Tour de France
What: Defraeye riding high over his 1912 Tour route
As one of the first Flemish pioneers to win big outside Belgium’s borders
it’s perhaps no surprise that Odiel Defraeye – the first Belgian winner of the Tour de France in 1912 (who also triumphed at Milan-San Remo the following year) – is memorialised with a statue which also includes
Unveiled in 2012 to mark 100 years since his ground-breaking Tour victory
Defraeye’s statue in Roeselare also allows visitors the opportunity to ruminate on the Tour organisers’ border-skirting route plans a century ago
Can you imagine if Twitter existed back then
What: A cycling variation on ‘Le Passe-muraille’
Another Belgian winner of the Tour de France
Lucien Buysse dominated the 1926 edition of the Grande Boucle – at 5,745 kilometres
the longest in the race’s history – despite receiving the devastating news that his daughter had died during the event
Though he lived his whole life in East Flanders
Buysse excelled on the climbs of Wallonia and France
But that didn’t stop those commemorating his achievements from depicting him in the true Flandrien style: emerging from rock
Befitting one of the very few riders to transcend Belgium’s often fierce linguistic and cultural divide
it’s perhaps no surprise that Eddy Merckx has been memorialised by a host of statues in both Flanders and Wallonia
This rather unusual tribute (I suppose art is subjective) was unveiled in 1993 in Stavelot
one of the defining climbs of Liège-Bastogne-Liège
a classic won by the Cannibal five times during his staggering career
this statue – in the Flemish Brabant municipality of Tielt-Winge (which also hosts the finish of Omloop van het Hageland) – depicts Merckx carrying the hopes of Belgium on his shoulders
and forms the centre of a 30km cycling route around the area
this one in Wolvertem captures the feelings of those riders tasked with keeping up with the Cannibal – he’s everywhere…
there are almost 200 tributes to cycling legends around Belgium
so let us know if we missed any particularly noteworthy ones out
And then maybe we’ll put together a part two in time for the Tour of Flanders
complete with joint-Ronde record holder Achiel Buysse’s ‘rake for a head’ scrap metal memorial in Wetteren
while also tackling the mystery surrounding the removal of legendary classics rider – but divisive personality – Rik van Steenbergen’s statue in Waregem
and enjoy the return of the cobbled classics…
