I have a diamond one that my mother wore all her life
one that was made out of a coin that my parents bought in Greece

Arlene “Tuny” Page and Alina won the De Kraal International CDI3* Grand Prix Freestyle at Zandhoven
Belgium Sunday for the American pair’s first victory in Europe and the most successful show for the rider outside the United States
The score of 72.500 per cent was their highest ever outside the United States and the second highest Freestyle mark in four years of CDI competition
Their previous best Freestyle result in Europe was 71.550 per cent at Lingen
Sunday’s victory followed a second place for Tuny and the 16-year-old Danish Warmblood mare in the Grand Prix Friday and as runnerup on her Woodstock in the Grand Prix Special on Saturday
Spain’s Morgan Barbançon Mestre on Vitana V was second in the Freestyle on 71.150 per cent with Mario van Orshaegen of Belgium on Wilco V in third on 69.465 per cent
This newly created CDI was the last European competition this year for Tuny and her two Grand Prix horses who will return to their Wellington
Florida base later this month to prepare for the Global Dressage Festival winter circuit
“Well I can only say that she loves her life and her job because she goes to the arena and tries her heart out.”
an 11-year-old KWPN gelding she bought as a small tour horse in late 2012
placed second on 69.157 per cent in the Grand Prix Special Saturday after finishing eighth on 66.080 per cent in the Grand Prix on Friday
The horse’s inexperience in only their second CDI Big Tour show was marked by tension in the Grand Prix
“Chou,” as she calls Woodstock
“was just lovely to ride yesterday in the Special
“He matured over 24 hours from the Grand Prix to the Special
“I know that very soon his experience and confidence will catch up with his basic talent and he will be what we all dreamed of.”
Tuny has been based for the past two summers with her coach
including on the American silver medal team at the Hickstead
for the American team World Equestrian Games selection trials in Gladstone
New Jersey in mid-June but returned to Europe when the pair did not finish in the top eight that would have qualified them for the WEG team long list
Tuny has competed extensively on the East Coast of the United States and in Europe over the years
including the World Cup Final with her Wild One in Amsterdam in 2006
“I am incredibly proud of the team around me and the family
sponsors and friends that support me,” she said
In Belgium, we’re not very proud of our own culture, so why would you make a movie about our electronic music? Because the only original music that came of Belgium was electronic music. If you didn’t live that scene, you don’t realize its importance. And in Belgium things are different, which is an important aspect of my documentary, The Sound of Belgium
if you want to go to the most famous clubs you go to the capital
and after that probably to the center of town
Most of our clubs were in the middle of nowhere
years before electronic music even existed
people in Belgium were dancing to mechanical
There is a small town at crossing highways where roads from Antwerp to Germany and Brussels to Holland all meet called Zandhoven
Along these roads there were six or seven huge spots for people to stop and have a snack and a drink
but it’s digital music: There’s paper—music roll—being fed into the machine
and if you look at the early versions of Cubase
So there was already this tradition of dancing to the straight synchronized beat of these organs
which I would argue is a very subconscious influence
And it’s important to make this connection
new beat and techno—all of this followed from this mechanized tradition
Most of the dance halls also stayed open the whole week and throughout the whole weekend
It was a prosperous time in the ’50s
And it was the beginning of the notion of partying to mechanized music kind of endlessly
And back then a record player was not loud enough for a crowd of dancers
Most other documentaries about electronic music were from a very British perspective but they don’t have a clue about what happened next door in Belgium
25 years ago and still no one had made a documentary about it
The first decent piece of writing that was written about it was done by an Englishman
Bill Brewster in Last Night a DJ Saved My Life
and the new beat story is in the same chapter as Ibiza
Years ago Ibiza and Belgium were pretty similar
It was the same blend of music and the same desire for a mixture
Except the only difference is in the Ibiza music you hear the sunshine and in Belgian music you hear the rain
And even though no one seems to talk about new beat
it has influenced the world in ways you wouldn’t expect
I took a trip to Mexico and when I went record digging
three-quarters of the electronic music I found there was Belgian new beat
I remember in the early stages of researching for the movie
I watched a documentary about British jungle music
“We started making this jungle because we were fed up with being conquered by the Belgian stuff.”
UK music was all Belgian stabs with the big beats
The English just started copying these sounds
Take the label XL Recordings: their first records are reissues of Belgian tracks
If you listen to the first Prodigy tracks the Belgian influence is obvious
The only thing is that there’s something different in their way of chopping up the breakbeats
and Belgian music is somewhat more militaristic
like EBM—which comes from music and national history
The point is that music doesn’t change by itself
Self-playing organs and new highways connecting roadside dancehalls; these were the main ingredients to our electronic music and dance culture

Spending the last twelve years establishing AS Sport Horses as one of Europe’s leading international showjumping stables
Abdel Said has decided to expand – adding two American bases to the portfolio
in addition to a second Belgian base in Zandhoven
While Said will remain based out of Belgium
where we will offer the same services as we have been doing here in Europe over the last 12 years – coaching
management and sales,” Said tells World of Showjumping
we have had our American clients based with us in Europe
but now we would like to take this a step further and provide the same services to them within the U.S.
also combining this with our sales service that's already well established there.”
it will be Sam Hutton leading and managing our U.S
operation as a partner of AS Sport Horses,” Said explains
“We have been working together for over ten years
and with Sam’s extensive experience both from Stal Tops and AS Sport Horses
AS Sport Horses will base out of Wellington and then for the rest of the year out of New York.”
“We don't want to make it too big though; our aim is to provide high-end services to our clients
we will be taking two-maximum three students and Sam will have a string of approximately six horses to compete,” Said tells about the American adventure
Antonia Pettersson Häggström and I will continue to be based out of our stable in Herentals
we can provide our clients with a lot of possibilities as we will be spanning across different continents
clients stay in the same system without having to go through changes in their training programs,” Said details
“We had a great experience when competing in the Major League in August and September
and look forward to a more permanent presence in the U.S
It was a great way for us to compete
develop our horses and at the same time focus on our main business which is buying and selling,” Said continues
Sam and I – had great results with the horses developing really well
It was also a great opportunity to follow up the horses that we have with our partners in the U.S.”
we will be expanding in Belgium as we have acquired the equestrian property De Kraal in Zandhoven
Belgium. We plan to develop this into a new base for our young horses who we until now have been spreading out. Over the last 3-4 years
we have been breeding ourselves and purchasing a lot of younger horses
so it has become quite a big number in total. We really wanted to have everything a little bit more in-house
and De Kraal provides us with that opportunity. We think the property has a lot of possibilities
and the location is fantastic as it’s close to Antwerp,” Said says
“We will now be focusing on restructuring; our stable in Herentals will be the home of our clients and our sport horses
while De Kraal will house the young horses
Dries Van Dyck and Frida Larsson are an important part of the team working with the younger generation of horses all the way up to 2* level
and we will also be expanding with Rebecca Golasch and Christopher Frazer joining the team to assist with the training of our clients and in-house riders
The goal is to be able to create a structure where we start by either breeding the horses ourselves
with the aim of developing them towards a career in the top sport – creating a full-circle that we hope will make us better

“It’s iconic, it’s a symbol of Antwerp,” says Kathleen Janssens. The visitor from Zandhoven is about to take the wooden escalators to cross the river Scheldt with her two grandchildren.
Those escalators go 31,5 m underground and they are still part of the St. Anna’s tunnel (Sint-Annatunnel), a pedestrian passage built between 28 June 1931 and 14 August 1933 to connect both banks of the river Scheldt in Antwerp.
“It’s 90 years old. We cannot replace it. We should keep it in good shape,” says her husband, Staf Marivoet to Belga News Agency. Indeed, it’s one of the last wooden escalators left in the world. The steps are still made of solid wood, weighing 40 kilos each.
Its concept was presented by the American inventor Jesse Reno at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900, where it won first prize. But the escalators in Antwerp are not American. “They are Belgian-made, by the Jaspar company from Liège," explains Kris Henau, former coordinator of tunnel maintenance at the Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer), in one interview to Gazet van Antwerp.
The materials are top quality, strong and durable. “Did you know that about 3,5 to 4 million people pass through this tunnel every year? That's about a third of the Belgian population. 85% with the escalators, 15% take the elevator. I don't think other public elevators, even the ones in Central Station, are used that intensively," says Henau.
The wood escalators were built to transport 16,000 people per hour and go at a speed of 0,50 m per second, moved by electricity. Before the tunnel with the lift and the wood escalator, pedestrians had to manage with a ferry service, the St Anneke’s Boat, which departed from Steenplein.
The tunnel is 572 m long, covered with ceramic tiles. It also has a metal lift with art deco decorations, which provides space for a maximum of 80 people.
There are old and new warning signs in the two access buildings. Pedestrians are invited to keep their pets on a leash to cross the tunnel and take the escalators. It’s forbidden “to turn on engines (of motorized vehicles); to smoke, to shout, sing or make noise; to spit; and to transport dangerous goods of all classes”.
On 10 September 1933, Belgian King Albert I and the entire Royal Family, foreign authorities and Antwerp’smayor, Camille Huysmans, took a celebratory walk through St Anna’s Tunnel and its wooden escalators accompanied by 20,000 schoolboys and girls.
Today, Antwerp locals and tourists, on foot or bikes, can take the wooden escalators to go enjoy the green left bank of Antwerp. Except on Thursdays, which is maintenance day from 7 am to about 7 pm. The escalators are protected heritage and its 1,600 steps are disassembled piece by piece and put back in their exact spot.
There is even a website and smartphone app to display the accessibility for bikes and pedestrian connections: https://fietsverbindingenschelde.wegenenverkeer.be

near Zandhoven in Antwerp Province could hardly believe their eyes when they spotted a roe deer taking a dip in the swimming pool in their garden
The animal then walked into the kitchen of their home
Sofie Mertens and her family then called the fire service
Fire fighters were able to trap the animal and later release it safely into nearby woodland
Sofie Mertens told VRT Radio 2 Antwerp that “We came home from the shops when I suddenly saw something brown walking in the garden
but when I came outside I saw that it was a deerjjumping around in the garden"
The animal was startled and jumped into the swimming pool
"The deer had first stumbled next to the swimming pool
I immediately called the fire brigade because I was not going to get the animal out myself
By the time I got through the deer had already entered the pool
So when they asked on the phone what was wrong and I said that a deer was swimming in my pool
it became quiet for a few seconds." Ms Sofie Mertens laughed
Sofie had sent her children outside to show the fire brigade where to go
"I had left the door of the kitchen open so that the children could come and get me if there was anything wrong
The animal started to slip because it had wet legs
By then it was so exhausted that it collapsed then stayed where it was
I then closed the door to prevent the animal from escaping onto the busy road."
"It took three men and a lot off force to catch the deer and put the deer back into
My children were on the front row and my daughter immediately started taking some pictures
She said: “Because if we tell people this nobody will believe us."
