A dog in Zelzate is being held responsible for causing a house fire in the East Flemish town after it chewed the battery of an e-cigarette to bits. After extinguishing the blaze firefighters found the electronic cigarette in the dog's basket. The fire was caused after the dog bit the vape battery to pieces.
It was on Tuesday, just before noon, that fire-fighters were called to a blaze at a house in Zelzate. The fire was limited to one room, but if unchecked could have easily got out of control. ‘Fortunately, the dog owner had installed cameras in her house that she used to watch the dog and saw what was happening,’ explains fire captain Steven Van Vooren.
According to the fire brigade, the fire started in and around the dog's basket. ‘That's where the broken vape was. The battery may have ignited. The cushion started to burn, and afterwards the furniture too.’
The house is temporarily uninhabitable due to damage caused by the smoke. Luckily the home and dog owner and the dog remained unscathed.
Fire-fighters are seeing an increase in the number of incidents involving batteries. ‘Yes, we do see more and more,’ Capt. Van Vooren confirms.
‘Recently, for example, there was an incident with a bicycle battery that was charging on a carpet. A fire started. The owner threw the battery into the hall. The hall then also started burning.’
Here the vape was not charging, but that could just as easily cause a fire. ‘If you throw away a battery in the residual waste, fire can also often start during disposal, when the battery is crushed. Vapes do not belong in household waste,’ Capt. Van Vooren concludes.
Infrastructure operator Fluxys has started the construction of the first phase of its hydrogen pipeline network in Belgium.
In the port areas of Antwerp and Ghent, as well as between those ports (from Kallo to Zelzate), the company will build new hydrogen pipelines to provide transport capacity to the market according to the principle of open access, Fluxys revealed, adding that these pipelines will also be constructed with multi-purpose technology.
As disclosed, the first phase of this network will be ready in 2026 and will be gradually expanded over the coming years in line with market development, and to the extent that the investment risk in the start-up phase of the market is brought to an acceptable level by government mechanisms.
Pascal De Buck, CEO of Fluxys hydrogen and CEO and Managing Director of Fluxys Belgium, stated: “We confirm that we are starting the construction of this infrastructure which is essential for decarbonising the industry. With this step, Fluxys as an industrial group takes on its role in the energy transition.”
To note, in 2023, Fluxys established the subsidiary Fluxys hydrogen to develop the necessary infrastructure for hydrogen transport, and in April 2024, the subsidiary was appointed as the operator responsible for the development and management of an open-access hydrogen transport network in Belgium.
This new pipeline network will be a first step in facilitating the hydrogen economy with a transport network to which producers and consumers can connect, as provided for in the appointment as ‘Hydrogen Network Operator,’ Fluxys said.

Andy de Schipper from Zelzate (East Flanders) – originally from the Netherlands - set up a Facebook page to help people from Ukraine
There have been many genuine offers of support
but Andy has been shocked by some of the requests
He’s received an awful lot of private messages from single me offering to provide accommodation to “beautiful
“It’s lecherousness without limits that gets people to think our initiative can be used as a dating agency” he says
The minute Russia invaded Ukraine Andy launched efforts to help
He drove to the Polish-Ukrainian border to help refugees and set up the Facebook page Steun Oekraïne (Support Ukraine)
The page now has 3,000 members and many genuine offers to accommodate Ukrainian refugees
“I’ve received quite a few private messages from single men eager to house a Ukrainian woman
He knows an asylum centre in the Netherlands where women are enticed outside
“Men knock on the window and gesture for the women to come out
He has also taken to social media to make his abhorrence clear with regard to anybody with exterior motives offering accommodation
Steun Oekraïne has already found 200 people willing to provide proper accommodation
“We work with voluntary social media managers
We use our gut feeling when we screen people by phone
We won’t be sending any single women to single men!”
