Text description provided by the architects. BLAF's interest in sustainable construction is not limited to the energy performance of buildings. What characterizes BLAF is that we continue to respond in design to the increasingly complex issues of spatial planning, sustainability, affordability, circularity, and housing. Our vision development is based on, among other things, experimenting with the basic component of our “genetic” material: the single-family house.
The building program is conceived as a paved footprint that includes both the heated residential program and some private outdoor spaces. The whole is enclosed by a grid of concrete piers, topped by a concrete ring beam that envelops the underlying and varying roof shape. This structure defines a clear physical boundary, without being closed to its environment. Consequently, there is no need for additional physical parcel demarcation.
They literally fold themselves from the outer contour into the house and thus intertwine inside and outside
defines a clear figure within the green plot that can thus retain its individuality / grand character
The relief of the garden remains unchanged
Further pavements around the house are reduced to a minimum
in the form of an access path to the front door and lanes for a car

'Keep Calm & Carry On,' reads the message on the red tin with a British flag
It was a gift three years ago from Lorraine Gallerani, for my column about her husband Bruno's daring escape across World War II Europe after his B-17 bomber was shot down in Belgium
The phrase originated from a World War II British government warning about ignoring rumors and gossip
Yet the message also perfectly fits people like Port St
members of what we now call the Greatest Generation
He and his peers simply got on with their jobs
Since 2013 I've written two columns about Bruno
but last week another small piece of the story came to light in an email from Kansas City
who said he'd recently come across my columns about Bruno
DeGrandi wanted to shed more light on the backstory of his wife's great uncle
dubbed the 'Jolly Roger.' The bomber was on a mission intended to strike Nazi ballbearing factories
but never reached its target; the plane was shot down near Antwerp

Anthony Westbury: Great escape story from World War II gets a postscript in Port St. Lucie
only five bailed out as the crippled plane descended in a slow arc
Engineer gunner Bruno helped three crew members get out
who was mortally wounded before reaching the ground
Villagers from Zoersel scraped together money to buy flowers to give him a proper burial
and the priest who said a Mass for Schreppel
were imprisoned for several months for helping the enemy
Bruno landed safely and went on a 30-day odyssey across Europe
He had been a member of a relief crew for the B-17 and didn't know Schreppel
he told me this week at his home near Club Med in Port St
DeGrandi's email included crew members' names but none rang any bells with Bruno
'We weren't encouraged to get to know each other,' Bruno
He is remarkably offhand about his exploits
noting 'What gets me is how today people worry about dying in wars
And so is the amount of information available to us
What's always struck me about the downing of the 'Jolly Roger' is how many details of the story are available online
Belgian researchers have pieced together the complete mission from its fogbound beginnings in eastern England to the recollections of the German Focke-Wulf fighter pilot who shot the B-17 down
We know the fate of the other crew members and where they are buried
service revolver and his inflatable 'Mae West' life vest near a pine tree
Seventy years later the life preserver was mailed back to him by Michel Van de Put
was a member of the aristocratic family who sheltered Bruno for several days
the preserver stenciled with his name and serial number looks brand new
Maybe returning long-held souvenirs is a Belgian habit
DeGrandi's email revealed that one of the villagers who picked up the body recently sent the family one of Schreppel's gloves
decent people who simply got on with the jobs that fate sent them
Only a few weeks away from his 96th birthday
In 2013 he'd told me he kept active by 'helping a friend' install sprinkler systems
'I do the digging,' the 93-year-old explained in a matter-of-fact tone
Bruno is still driving his black pickup with the 'World War II POW' tags
he does most of the work; I just cut the tile and clean things up
You've got to force yourself to get up and go out
An amazing man from an amazing generation that kept calm and carried on
The Dutch Bronze Medallist at the 1999 European Championships
has found a new facility for his dressage horses
Teeuwissen is moving from his beautiful Fort Oudaen in 's Gravenwezel
where he transformed an old war fortress into an exclusive dressage stable
lies in a protected nature area in Belgium meaning that Teeuwissen is not allowed to build an indoor arena
"We live in a sea climate in Belgium and we have rain almost 9 out of 12 months
We can't do without an idoor arena," Teeuwissen said
After the final refusal of building permit for an indoor arena
Teeuwissen and his life companion Frank Garristen were decided upont staying in Belgium as they love the bourgeois life-style of the Belgian people
The purchase certificate has already been signed but they are still waiting for the results of a soil research

AXOR presents three bathroom concepts that are not merely places of function
but destinations in themselves — sanctuaries of style
For former Belgian Young Riders team member Carole Schepens the transition to senior level dressage and a semi-professional life with horses in 2015 has been an exhilirating one
The soon to be 22-year old Carole is combining a part-time job in the family business with the first steps of settling herself as a professional dressage rider at her home yard in Zoersel
The move away from the youth riders division and spending half days fully dedicated to riding have given her a boost of confidence and experience
Carole now has a clearer vision of what she wants in the future and she is aiming for Under 25 Grand Prix in the winter of 2015-2016
Aboard the 13-year old Dutch warmblood mare Velvet Dream (by Dream of Heidelberg x Amsterdam) Schepens has been a member of the Belgian Young Riders Team at 2012 and 2014 European Young Riders Championships in Berne and Arezzo
The pair began at junior riders level and won bronze at the 2011 Belgian Junior Championships
As a young riders' duo they built up an impressive show record as of 2012
They had successful starts at the CDi's in Addington
The cheerful blonde felt that this year's transition to senior small tour level went smoothly
"It wasn't too hard as I had been working on the Intermediaire I movements during my last year at young riders level
I started Velvet a couple of times in a national Inter I class two years ago and immediately scored 71%," Schepens told Eurodressage
"Velvet wasn't the easiest to begin with for inexperienced rider
We bought her as a 7-year old and she was still very spooky
I took her to shows pretty much every weekend for three years
I can focus on the movements and execute them precisely."
Schepens also has a second iron in the fire
the 10-year old Dutch warmblood gelding Anouagrant SAG (by Flemmingh x Jazz) which she bought five years ago as a successor
has been a challenge to ride for the petite Schepens due to his height
but the combination has gelled and is now schooling at Grand Prix level
"I really had to help Anouagrant with every movement when he was young
He always makes an effort to work for you and has a super mentality
carries himself and is performing super at small tour level
private dressage stable at her home in Zoersel and relies much on Arlette for her continued development and fine-tuning of her skills
"Arlette has really taught me a lot of discipline
While my peers where going out to party I stayed home to ride my horses
"She also taught me to fight for every point
Her international competition experience has taught me much
She still rides several horses each day and even returned to the international show ring on Anouagrant for me after a twelve year hiatus!"
The tall and lanky Anouagrant is an eye-catcher in the show ring
The pair won bronze at the 2013 Belgian Young Riders Championships and Schepens has already received a few offers on him
but I have now come to a point that I should no longer say no to an offer," Schepens confessed
"At a certain point you have to be able to sell an upper level trained horse
so you can buy young talent for the future."
Making it Work as a Young Dressage Professional
Carole studied communication management in college for two years
She has now found the perfect combination in working in her father's rice brokerage company and spending afternoons in the saddle
Schepens keeps her horses at home and turns them out daily in green paddocks
She has a 20 x 60 m Olympic outdoor arena with all-weather footing and good lighting
She chose Cavalor horse feed and the quality hay from own harvest to feed her horses with
"Each day I take care of the horses myself because I think it's important to build a bond
Horses feel that and it makes them happy," said Carole
"I train my horses daily and a few times per week my coach comes over to supervise me
I want to work on my international dressage career."
Carole has been focusing on the Grand Prix level movements with both her horses and hopes to make the transition to Under 25 Grand Prix level this winter
"On the long term I want to become part of the Belgian A-team in the senior division," said a modest Carole who wants to keep her goals realistic

and a denial of every formal cliché that could be attached to a building with this kind of service
becomes gradually aware of its presence in between the trees
making space for what seem to be the roots of the building
but what is rather the entrance to the cellar
where bikes can be parked and deliveries can be made
so that the slope can be tread on from inside the living room
and can be used for eating or sitting outside
It is not only the anchorage in the (artificial) landscape that defines the appearance of the building – it is also the contrast between the green of the natural environment
stuck to the facade as soon as the evening falls
This facade is made of boards of Siberian larch
slightly carbonized so that the surface is blackened
This treatment of the facade material might – together with the pert
both formal and functional design attitude – be considered as an homage to the houses of the Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori
whose projects often have a somewhat fantastical or at least unworldly character
The same goes for the ‘Huis aan ’t Laar’ that
