Soudal Quick-Step on the top of the podium in the Belgian cyclo-cross race
Tim Merlier became the first Soudal Quick-Step to raise his arms in the air and celebrate a victory
after a strong ride in the mud of Zonnebeke
who will soon start his road season with the Wolfpack
as Saturday’s win was the first in a cyclo-cross race in his home country
A leading group of eight riders – featuring Tim – formed soon after the explosive start
but the hard course made it really difficult for one of them to open a gap
The status quo was maintained until the penultimate lap
when Merlier countered a move and immediately sensed an opportunity
powering clear and keeping off the chasers for a spectacular solo win
his first in a cyclo-cross race since the one he got in Mannheim
What made this weekend’s victory even more special was that it came in the exact same place where two decades ago
a 22-year-old Sven Vanthourenhout won the Kasteelcroos
signing off the first win in the history of the Wolfpack – a perfect start for what later became one of the most successful teams in the history of the sport
but that wasn’t important on this course
but I kept my composure and countered them easily
knowing that I could fight for the podium if I made no mistakes
so I didn’t hesitate and went to the front
used my power and almost instantly opened a gap
that is why this result – which came in the Soudal Quick-Step jersey – makes me so happy
It shows my good form and gives me confidence for the road season
whose road debut for the team will happen in Oman

wide-ranging exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts
As chief curator Anne Wilkes Tucker explains in the sumptuous catalogue
that slash in the title is important: this is not a show simply of photographs of war
It’s a demonstration and examination of the relationship between the two and how that relationship has changed over time
but the catchment area extends way beyond the battlefield–both in space and in time–to include preparations for war
damage to property and the physical and psychological aftermath of conflict
Taken by some of the most famous photographers—more than 280 are showcased—in the history of the medium
by aerial reconnaissance units and unknown combatants and civilians
the pictures are drawn from the archives of photo agencies such as Magnum
military archives and personal family albums
surprising new ones and—if one consults the catalogue—surprises about well-known pictures
More than a few of the featured pictures have been either faked or staged
for the slipperiness of the distinction between “real” and “arranged”
or “genuine” and “fake”
turns out to be one of the themes of the show
The problem crops up right from the get-go
with Roger Fenton’s famous pair of pictures of the Valley of Death (1856) from the Crimean war—one of which shows cannonballs strewn more abundantly than the other
(slide #1) The scholarly war over which picture was taken first continues to rage
I thought this question had been definitively settled by Errol Morris in his book Believing is Seeing but John Stauffer argues in the catalogue for precisely the opposite conclusion
The “Dead Rebel Sharp Shooter” in Alexander Gardner’s famous image from the Civil War (slide #2) was dragged to the place where he is seen to have died and arranged in such a way that the rifle — not his own but a prop carried by the photographer — added extra pathos
so in the First World War: it was impossible to take pictures of actual combat
One of the reasons why the famous footage of soldiers going over the top at the Battle of the Somme is faked is because it is on film
looks at the camera — and folds his arm before dying
Among the most spectacular images of the war
James Frank Hurley’s “An Episode after the Battle of Zonnebeke” (c.1918) (slide #3) seems like a composite expression of our idea of the Western Front — because
it is a composite print made from multiple negatives
As Siegfried Sassoon wrote in his poem “Cinema Hero”: “It’s the truth/That somehow never happened.”
The complexity of Hurley’s image is in stark contrast to Wesley David Archer’s photograph of a pilot who has bailed out of his burning plane (c.1933) (slide #4)
It is a picture full of suspense because we don’t know whether the parachute is going to open
Armed with this knowledge you go back to the original and… it still looks amazing
You don’t feel cheated so much as admiring of someone who could create such a truth after (or independent of ) the fact
Everyone is familiar with the doubts that continue to swirl around Robert Capa’s picture of the “Death of a Loyalist Militiaman” (1936) (slide #5) in the Spanish Civil War
No one can agree on exactly the circumstances in which it was made
while photography is generally assumed to be strong as evidence but weak in meaning
Capa’s photograph has come to resemble painting
Joe Rosenthal’s image of the flag-raising on Iwo Jima in 1945 is an especially complicated case in that it was widely assumed to have been staged
even if we can’t remember exactly what is supposed to have gone on because it’s all a bit muddled up with memories of the Clint Eastwood film about what happened
is that the flag was raised twice — not for Rosenthal’s benefit but
in the words of the Lieutenant Colonel who ordered it to be done
“so that every son-of-a-bitch on this whole cruddy island (could) see it.” (slide #6) How do we know this is accurate
photographs of the sequence of events that led to Rosenthal taking his photograph – to prove it
the success of Rosenthal’s image was due to the way that it not only recorded a moment and event but
expressed a truth of enduring – even mythic – proportions about the Marine Corps
The same could be said of Len Chetwyn’s iconic picture from the North Africa (1942) campaign: a photograph which proves
that this was indeed a battle waged by men in shorts
The fact that a detail from it is used on the cover of a beautiful Australian edition of Alan Moorhead’s African Trilogy highlights the way that documentary veracity and imaginative truth are mutually supporting
The surprising thing – which turns out not to be so surprising if we consider how perfectly the picture is composed and lit — is that it’s the photograph that provides the imaginative half of that equation
but for pictorial effect rather than combat effectiveness
in a show that is so scrupulous and judicious in its investigation of the relationship between real and doctored pictures that the catalogue seems
to have fallen victim to a booby-trap in its midst
John Filo’s photograph of the killings at Kent State in 1970 shows a distraught woman kneeling over the body of a dead student
Unfortunately it so happened that a pole in the background looked like it was coming out of her head
Since this pole was aesthetically unpleasing
it was removed from the picture as published in Life magazine and elsewhere
Amazingly this clumsily doctored version – you can see quite clearly how the pole has been erased – is the one printed in the War/Photography catalogue
As we move into the contemporary the distinction between art and documentary becomes increasingly hard to sustain—or to put it the other way around
the No-Man’s Land between the two grows ever larger—as shown in works by color photographer Luc Delahaye (slide #8) and photojournalist Damon Winter’s Gurskey-esque view of a plane-load of troops “Flying Military Class” (slide #9)
Susan Sontag argued that Jeff Wall’s “fictional” image “Dead Troops Talk (a vision after an ambush of a Red Army patrol
Afghanistan)” was among the most successful war photographs of recent times
(note: Wall’s image is not part of the War/Photography exhibition) So perhaps Peter van Agtmael’s well-known shot of a line of U.S
troops sheltering from the downdraft of a helicopter in a rocky grey landscape in Nuristan
(note: van Agtmael’s image is not part of the War/Photography exhibition) First because a compositional similarity to W
Eugene Smith’s shot of Marines sheltering from an explosion on Iwo Jima in 1945 (slide #10) establishes its place in the heroic and noble tradition of documentary photography
because an uncanny resemblance to Wall’s image tacitly acknowledges that the fictive now sets a standard of authenticity to which the real is obliged to aspire
The relationship between Wall’s large works and the scale and ambition of history paintings has often been remarked on
But Gary Knight’s picture from Dyala Bridge
2003 (slide #11) achieves an even more remarkable relationship with the art of the past
A photograph taken in the immediate aftermath of fighting
it combines the documentary immediacy and evidential power of the best photojournalism with the epic grandeur of history painting

Where Poppies Blow by John Lewis-Stempel studies how the natural world helped sustain the morale of troops contending with the horror of the trenches
In the week when relatives and dignitaries marked 100 years since the battle of Passchendaele
the author and farmer John Lewis-Stempel’s “profoundly moving” exploration of how nature helped maintain British soldiers’ morale during the first world war
has taken the Wainwright Golden Beer book prize for nature writing
Lewis-Stempel argues that one of the major reasons why men volunteered to fight in 1914 was their desire to “preserve inviolate … rural Britain’s ‘fair sights and sounds and perfumed airs’ – and that “for the generation of 1914-18, love of country meant, as often as not, love of countryside”. Where Poppies Blow explores this theory by way of figures such as Edward Thomas
author of the great poem of English rural life Adlestrop
who was killed in action in April 1917; and considers Ralph Vaughan Williams’s The Lark Ascending
the “musical embodiment of pastoralism and patriotism”
Lewis-Stempel also looks at how soldiers in the trenches were in direct contact with the natural world
and used nature to take solace when faced with the horrors of war
Chair of judges Julia Bradbury hailed Where Poppies Blow as “an extraordinary book about the healing power and resilience of nature in the darkest of times”
which she predicted would become a modern classic
It was the unanimous choice of judges for the £5,000 award
“Beautifully written and profoundly moving,” Bradbury continued
“it is a reminder of the atrocities of war
but John Lewis-Stempel cleverly weaves in the story of the animals and wildlife that survive
die and thrive alongside the men and women who lost their lives.”

said that Britain was a “world leader” in this kind of writing
“At a time when more and more people are screen-locked and less connected with the countryside than ever
it’s encouraging to remember there has been a huge renewed interest in books about the natural world,” said Bickmore

To mark the 90th anniversary of the opening of the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in Belgium
Claire Hunter looks at the story behind one of the more than 54,000 men whose names are inscribed on the memorial
dear mother” from the trenches in the First World War on 6 August 1917
he couldn’t have known it would be his last letter:
I go to the trenches prepared to take on any job my mates have to do
If it is good enough for one it is good enough for all
Killed in action near the village of Zonnebeke
the 31 year old was hit by a shell and died instantly
and his name is inscribed on the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing at Ypres in Belgium along with more than 54,000 others
Hugh Barr trained as a fitter’s helper and moved to Australia in his mid-twenties
working as a seaman on the steamer Western Australia
He enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 18 January 1916 and joined the 44th Battalion
entering the front-line trenches of the Western Front on 29 December
just after Christmas in the bleak winter of 1916–17
The battalion fought in its first major battle at Messines in Belgium between 7 and 10 June
and in the months that followed was heavily employed in the Ypres sector in costly offensive operations
Barr wrote of the strain the battalion was under and that there were not many “old boys” left:
We have just come out of the trenches for a spell and I can tell you we have earned it
We have had it fairly hot since the advance and up over the waist in mud
We have had very heavy casualties this time also
That same month Barr was promoted to the rank of corporal
he expressed deep concern for his mother at home and told her he’d be sending her the extra money from the pay rises he’d gained from his promotions
“Mother dear you use up that money of mine,” he wrote
“I would feel much happier to know you are well and as comfortable as possible.”
Barr’s own life at the front would have been far from comfortable
The next major attack in which his battalion participated took place at Broodseinde Ridge on 4 October
It was a just over a week later that Barr was killed
and on 28 January 1918 he was posthumously awarded the Military Medal
The company commander and battalion adjutant both wrote to Barr’s mother in Ireland in the weeks and months after his death
can assure you he was much valued in this company
I have been with him on patrol in no man’s land
All I can say is that he was always a true soldier
Captain Cyril Hamilton Corby Hillary also wrote from the field: “Your son was a brave and conscientious soldier
Without a doubt he was one of our most serious losses in the recent operations
his memory will ever live in the minds of his comrades.”
Your generous donation will be used to ensure the memory of our Defence Forces and what they have done for us
and what they continue to do for our freedom remains – today and into the future

BRUSSELS – About 100 cars and trucks were involved in three pile-ups at a highway in western Belgium in a dense morning fog Tuesday, leaving at least one dead and 54 injured.
Medical workers were working to free injured passengers from the twisted metal of their vehicles hours after the crash, and the fog is making the emergency rescue by helicopter impossible.

The provincial governor, Carl Decaluwe, said one person had died, and that among the 54 injured, five were in life-threatening condition, 11 suffered serious injured while 38 walked away with minor injuries.
But Dirk Cardoen, mayor of Zonnebeke, where the crashes happened, said two had died.
The highway linking the regional industrial hub of Kortrijk to nearby Ieper was strewn with debris in three locations close to one another.
Initial photos from the scene show several wrecked cars, some overturned and a truck slammed against the side of the road — all shrouded in thick fog. A truck with feed had overturned in a ditch, slumping next to several cars crumpled together like paper balls.
With temperatures hovering close to freezing, thermal blankets were handed out to people who were still caught in their cars.
In 1996, a similar pile-up nearby had left 10 people dead.

The central character in this story is Johan Vandewalle
a Fleming who lives near the Polygoon Woods in Zonnebeke where he has a pub called "ANZAC Rest"
when he excavated the remains of what turned to be Australian soldiers
Vandewalle even became a local hero in Australia due to his detailed work and determination
a pub and meeting place on a street corner on the edge of the Polygoon Woods
The place is filled with memorabilia from his trip to Australia
and from the dead Australian soldiers whose bodies he excavated back in 2006
He knew that workers would be digging in the area in connection with a new gas pipe
He told them to alert him the minute that would bump into the remains of fallen soldiers - something that happens regularly in the area
came to the scene - just a couple of streets from the pub - and insisted with the local police that he would excavate the bodies carefully in order to protect them from possible battlefield scavengers
unearthing the remains of 5 soldiers - hence the 'Zonnebeke 5'
Three of these could be identified as Australians through DNA research
One body was covered with a kind of plastic sheet
the eyes of the fallen soldier looked straight at him
"It was then I knew I had a mission to complete"
an amateur archaeologist who specialised in trench warfare
was informed that one of the victims was John "Jack" Hunter
who perished while on mission for Australia's 49th Batallion in September 1917
There was a particular story behind his death: John died in the arms of his younger brother Jim during the battle near the Polygon Woods
He had seen that John had been badly hit and tried to drag his brother back
hoping to find him back at a later stage and give him a proper funeral
Jim continued to believe he would find his brother back before he died
but at a stage where Jim had passed away himself
Vandewalle thought it was his mission to do what he could to compensate this injustice just a little bit
(photo: the side wall of the pub depicts the story of the two brothers on the battlefield)
The case made the headlines in the Australian press
Vandewalle was promptly invited by the three families of the 3 Australian victims that could be identified
He was received in their villages as a real hero
The story of the Hunter brothers is a big one in Australia
TV crews have travelled to Belgium to bring the story
and a reconstruction will be made of their journey some 100 years ago (via Plymouth and France to Flanders Fields)
"I want to reunite these two souls"
Johan Vandewalle made his business a special place to welcome visitors from Australian and New Zealand in particular
The place is full of photos and memorabilia from both countries
Vandewalle shows us a giant picture of John Hunter
as he hopes to install a special monument to honour the two brothers
"I want to reunite these two souls!" The monument will of course also serve to honour all fallen ANZAC and war soldiers in general
It should be ready by September 2017 to mark the 100th anniversary of the tragedy
"This will be one of the most special commemorations you have ever seen"
such counterfactual speculation was "unhistorical shit"
Other historians have confessed to being more intrigued. "The historian must constantly put himself at a point in the past at which the known factors will seem to permit different outcomes," wrote Johan Huizinga
By comparison, the first world war has been the subject of far less counterfactual speculation. Niall Ferguson is one of the exceptions, in an essay which considers the possibility that Britain might have stood aside from the European war in August 1914
And although his essay suffers from the fact that the Eurosceptic Ferguson is over-eager to portray the kaiser as the godfather of the later European Union
his account of the cabinet debates of 1914 is fascinating because Herbert Asquith's Liberal government could so easily have decided to stay out of the war – and very nearly did
With the centenary of the first world war almost upon us, 2014 is likely to witness plenty of debate about the right forms of commemoration and about whether the war achieved anything. At present, argument about the war mainly consists of two mutually uncomprehending camps. On the one hand, there are those who, as Margaret MacMillan put it recently
think the war was "an unmitigated catastrophe in a sea of mud"
there are those who insist that it was nevertheless "about something"
people on all sides thought they had a just cause
"It is condescending and wrong to think they were hoodwinked."
But what was the something that the first world war was about
To answer that it was a war between empires
is fine as long as some effort is made to distinguish between the empires
But this rarely happens in a debate that is polarised between collective myths of national sacrifice on the one hand (certainly in Britain and France) and an indiscriminate muddy catastrophe on the other
The more one tries to examine and maybe get beyond these dominant narratives
as we should next year and as the centenary rolls on
the more a bit of the counterfactual may help the process
The first world war came to an end in November 1918, when the German armies surrendered near Compiegne. But it could plausibly have ended in a very different way in spring 1918, if Ludendorff's offensive on Paris and towards the Channel had succeeded. It nearly did so. And what might 20th-century Europe have been like if it had
Obviously, it would have been dominated and shaped by Germany
repressive Prussian power created by Bismarck
Or the Germany with the largest labour movement in early 20th-century Europe
German history after 1918 would have been a contest between the two – and no one can say which would have won in the end
imposing peace on the defeated allies at the treaty of Potsdam
would not have had the reparations and grievances that were actually inflicted upon it by France at Versailles
the rise of Hitler would have been much less likely
neither the Holocaust nor the second world war would necessarily have followed
Zionism might not have had the international moral force that it rightly claimed after Hitler's defeat
The modern history of the Middle East would therefore be very different – partly also because Turkey would have been among the victors in 1918
defeated France would be the more likely seedbed for fascism
But with its steel and coal still in German-controlled Alsace-Lorraine
France's military and naval potential would have been contained
defeated Britain would have seen its navy sunk in the Heligoland Bight
have been forced to cede its oil interests in the Middle East and the Gulf to Germany
and have been unable to contain Indian nationalism
the British empire would have been unsustainable
Today's Britain might have ended up as a modest north European social democratic republic – like Denmark without a prince
whose entry into the war would have been successfully pre-empted by Germany's victory
would have become a firmly isolationist power and not the enforcer of international order
Franklin Roosevelt would solve America's postwar economic problems in the 1930s
but he would never fight a war in Europe – though he might have to fight one against Japan
with a wary but powerful neighbour in victorious Germany
would have been the great destabilising factor but it might not have been invaded as it was in 1941
And with no second world war there might never have been a cold war either
But at least we can see that the outcome mattered
Europe would have been different if Germany had won in 1918
But there is a plausible case for saying many fewer people would have died in 20th-century Europe
The first world war was a catastrophe in the mud
But it was about something more than tragic sacrifice too
The outcome – what happened and what did not – made a difference
In 2014 we need to get beyond the rival national perspectives and learn to see the war more objectively and thoughtfully than has yet happened
Commonwealth War Graves Commission historians reveal complex responses to war
the epitaphs on the graves of the first world war fallen captured the nation’s pain 100 years ago
these poignant parting words from families to their loved ones offer researchers a glimpse of how a past generation came to terms with the unprecedented loss of life
Historians at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission have examined the personal inscriptions on many thousands of headstones
which demonstrate that the public response to the war was not straightforward
Yet others betray painful details of futures sacrificed
When the CWGC began its work to locate and rebury the war dead from the first world war
next of kin were offered the chance to add a personal inscription to headstones
View image in fullscreenThe grave of second lieutenant Hugh Langton bears a bar of music from an unknown origin
Photograph: handoutVast number of languages and cultures are reflected
Instead of words on the grave of second lieutenant Hugh Langton in Poelcapelle British Cemetery in Belgium
his family selected a bar of music of unknown origin
On the grave of lance corporal Harold Gilkes
the headstone reads: “An only son killed in action on his way to his leave and wedding.” The words
immediately evoke the tragedy of a young man
leaving behind a heartbroken fiancée who must have thought her husband-to-be was en route to safety
Another reminds of the controversial policy of dealing with deserters
Defiant words chosen for the grave of private Albert Ingham read: “Shot at dawn one of the first to enlist a worthy son of his father.” It is a surprising reference given that inscriptions had to be approved by the commission’s committee system and political messages were not allowed
Yet this got through and his family’s powerful 15 words message speaks of their great pride in him
The family of private Thomas Francis White
selected “‘Did my best – was unlucky’.” The quotation marks lead to speculation that it may have been something said by White himself – perhaps his final words

who is buried at the CWGC’s Lijssenthoek military cemetery in Belgium
chose: “A noble type of good heroic womanhood” – words written by the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in tribute to Florence Nightingale
Rudyard Kipling’s words “Known unto God” were chosen
Another common phrase is “Their glory shall not be blotted out”
and used on headstones of those who had a known burial place that was later destroyed as the conflict drew on
Examination of the 250,000 inscriptions on first world war headstones by historians at the CWGC also found some surprising trends
Australians were the most likely in the then-British Empire to pay tribute to the king
while Brits were the least likely to mention their monarch
View image in fullscreenThe grave of P
Photograph: handoutMost inscriptions were not addressed directly to the casualty
but rather to the visitor reading the headstone
There are far more instances of “his loving wife” than “your loving wife”
leading researchers to conclude that from the very beginning families were aware these headstones would become part of a public process of grieving
“These personal messages from the aftermath of the first world war give us a priceless insight into the emotions of families grieving the loss of their loved ones,” said Dr Glyn Prysor
“When they chose these tributes – often several years later – many turned to scripture
Often they sought to explain or justify the sacrifice
But they also give us a sense of the personalities of those who died as well as those left behind
reminding us that the public response to the war wasn’t as straightforward as we might think.”
A new online CWGC exhibition, Shaping our Sorrow, tells the story of how the commission helped the nation to terms with the unprecedented loss of life, while Epitaphs of the Great War series from military historian Sarah Wearne, which looks at collections of inscriptions from The Somme, Passchendaele and The Last 100 Days, is available from the CWGC online shop.

The Hallerbos, also known as the Blue Forest, is a 552 hectare forest near Halle, south of Brussels. It is world famous for its dense carpet of wild bluebells that bloom under towering beech trees.
The phenomenon occurs when the tree canopy is not fully developed, allowing sunlight to reach the forest floor and trigger a brief but stunning flowering period. The vibrant purple and blue hues, combined with the play of light through the emerging green leaves, create a striking and ephemeral landscape that has become one of Belgium's most iconic natural spectacles.
To ensure visitors can get to and from the forest safely - and to reduce car traffic - the city of Halle provides free shuttle buses from Halle station to the forest on weekends between 12 April and 1 May
as well as on Easter Monday (21 April) and Labour Day (1 May)
free bikes will be available for hire at Halle station between 9.00 and 17.00
The authorities strongly advise against driving into the forest as parking is limited
especially at weekends and on public holidays
There will be extra checks and fines for those who park illegally
The Agency for Nature and Forests is also encouraging visitors to consider alternative locations to reduce the pressure on Hallerbos
"Other woodlands such as the Brakelbos
Muziekbos and Bos Ter Rijst also offer stunning bluebell displays," agency director Goedele Van der Spiegel told VRT NWS

14 men from South Africa received the Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest award for gallantry, during the First World War. As part of the Centenary Commemorations the people of the United Kingdom marked their gratitude to those courageous men by presenting a bronze memorial plaque to their home country engraved with their names. The plaque is now displayed at the Castle of Good Hope, Capetown. This archive tells their stories.
Clement Robertson was born on 15 December 1890 in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, where his father was serving with the British Army at the time. The family later returned to their native Ireland where Robertson grew up before studying engineering at Trinity College, Dublin. He then went to Egypt where he worked as an engineer on the Nile irrigation project.
When the First World War broke out, Robertson returned home to enlist. He was 26 years old and an acting Captain with the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment during the Battle of Passchendaele. He was attached to A Battalion Tank Corps, when he was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously on 4 October 1917, at Zonnebeke, Belgium. His citation reads:
Captain Robertson was buried at Oxford Road Cemetery, near Ypres. A Tank Corps flag raising ceremony takes place every year on 4 October at the Tank Memorial Ypres Salient.

One hundred years ago World War One was entering its final stages - and the German Army had a plan for a big offensive which they hoped would make all the difference. As historian David Cameron, author of Australians on the Western Front 1918, told Philip Clark, they came close to breaking the Allied line in France and changing the course of history.

Ceremonies in Belgium mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the Battle of Passchendaele
It’s the word most often used to describe the Third Battle of Ypres and Passchendaele
Canadians took Passchendaele ridge on Nov 10th 1917
where the British and ANZACs had been fighting for months
a variety of Canadian officials were in Belgium to mark the centennial of that horrific battle in which nine Canadians were awarded the Empire’s highest honour for valour
Over half a million other Allied and German soldiers were killed in that months long campaign
the fighting in the sucking morass of the muddy fields of Flanders had been going on for months
Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haid had thrown wave after wave of British
Australian and New Zealanders to their deaths in the mud for little gain
They began the assault on Passchendaele in late October and by November 10 the Germans had been pushed out completely
This week Canadian dignitaries have been in Belgium to mark the 100th anniversary of that battle and the end of hell
although the war itself and the killing and dying would continue for another year
The ceremonies at cenotaphs across Canada to mark the centennial of this bittersweet victory today are a prelude to tomorrow’s major commemoration event on 11am on November 11th
being held at the National War Memorial and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

A group of Rotorua students performed a haka on a battlefield near Passchendaele in Belgium to mark the unveiling of a pou maumahara
101 years after the guns fell silent in Flanders
On Anzac Day, the 8m tall carving was unveiled in a ceremony at Passchendaele Memorial Park in Zonnebeke
Australians and Belgians gathered in Flanders to commemorate Anzac Day at memorials throughout the region
Waiariki MP Tamati Coffey attended the pou unveiling and said it was an enduring way to commemorate the Māori Pioneer Battalion and other New Zealanders who served on the Western Front
New Zealand made its greatest contribution and suffered its greatest loss of life," Mr Coffey said
"This pou is a powerful symbol of the connection between our communities
New Zealand will always be connected to this land and people."
Students from Rotorua Boys' High School attended the ceremony and performed a haka after a formal blessing of the carving
The students were part of a rugby team that had been touring Europe
School senior master Gordon Hunt said the students were humbled by the experience
"It's such an honour for the students to be here for this occasion," Mr Hunt said
The carving was created by the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute (NZMACI) in Rotorua
board member David Tapsell said his grandfather served in the Māori Pioneer Battalion and his great uncle was killed in the Battle of the Somme
He said the service of Māori in the war was remarkable given the unjust way many Māori were treated by the New Zealand government in the 1800s
He also paid tribute to those who refused to fight
Mr Tapsell said the site was fitting as the Māori Pioneer Battalion was formed near Zonnebeke
after having been part of the NZ Otago Mounted Rifles
More than 2000 Māori served in the Māori Pioneer Battalion and 336 died on active service
The unveiling ceremony followed a dawn service at Buttes New British Cemetery in Polygon Wood where 162 New Zealanders and 564 Australian soldiers are buried
president of the Australian Senate Scott Ryan paid tribute to the victims of the Christchurch terrorist attack last month
"We stand in solidarity with New Zealand and are filled with admiration at New Zealand's response [to the Christchurch terrorist attack]
which reminds us how peace and compassion [are] more powerful than hate and violence," Mr Ryan said
New Zealand Customs attaché to Belgium Paul Campbell attended the ceremonies wearing the medals of his grandfather Talford Brown who was injured in the Battle of Passchendaele
Mr Brown served in the Wellington Regiment and fought in Belgium and France
"I always said I would bring his medals here
where he fought and where his comrades are buried," Mr Campbell said
Mr Brown fought in the Battle of Broodseinde
and was wounded after being hit by shrapnel on 12 October 1917
About 843 New Zealanders were killed and about 2700 wounded that day
the greatest loss of life in one day in the country's history
"He was awarded a military medal for bravery for continuing to fight after being wounded
but he would say he was just looking after his mates," Mr Campbell said
Mr Brown was just 17 when he enlisted and 20 when he was injured at Passchendaele
he went back to the frontline to fight again
The events were part of an entire day of Anzac commemorations in Flanders
which included wreath-laying ceremonies at the Menin Gate in Ypres
where about 700 New Zealanders were killed in the Battle of Messines
where the Anzac soldiers were based in 1916 and 1917 and 80 Kiwi soldiers are buried
4600 New Zealand soldiers and more than 12,000 Australian soldiers were killed in Belgium

Organisers say disruptions caused by late Easter and security precautions could have contributed to lower turn-outs at services across Auckland
An Anzac Day service has gone ahead at Anzac Cove in Gallipoli
after the arrest of a man who had allegedly planned a terrorist attack
A veteran's daughter who attended two Anzac Day services in Auckland today says it was very poignant this year
In the three years since Te Papa's Gallipoli exhibition opened the crowds have kept coming - so it will stay on

The Australian Defence Force today honours the service and sacrifice of those who fought in Belgium during the First World War with services to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Polygon Wood
CAPTION: Members of Australia’s Federation Guard stand at ease during the Last Post Ceremony at Menin Gate
as part of 100th Anniversary commemorations of the Battle of Polygon Wood
The Battle of Polygon Wood took place on 26 September 1917 and was the first major battle fought by the 5th Australian Division in Belgium
which was the major British offensive in Flanders in 1917
members of the ADF will help commemorate the Battle of Polygon Wood and honour those who fought by participating in a special Dawn Service at the 5th Division Memorial
Buttes New British Cemetery at Zonnebeke in Belgium
led by the Vice Chief of the Defence Force Vice Admiral Ray Griggs
will be joined by the Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove
Governor of New South Wales General David Hurley
Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan and Princess Astrid of Belgium
Vice Admiral Griggs said recognition of this significant battle was important for all Australians
“The first Australian Imperial Force helped to shape the course of history in WWI
and their story deserves to be well known both in Australia and globally,” Vice Admiral Griggs said
“While it only lasted a matter of hours
the Battle for Polygon Wood was declared a great success for the Australian Imperial Force at the time
“But of course ‘success’ on the Western Front is a highly relative term
and this victory came at significant cost to Australia with 5770 casualties in this battle alone
in the eight weeks of fighting at Flanders
Australian forces incurred 38,000 casualties
“Australia experienced some of its greatest military sacrifices and most substantial losses on the Western Front
“The Australians who served there continue to hold a place in Australia’s national identity
and certainly in that of the contemporary ADF
Vice Admiral Griggs said the ADF’s contribution to the 100th anniversary commemorative service in Zonnebeke was part of a broader commitment to honour all who came before them during the Centenary of Anzac
“The centenary commemorations of these significant battles are an important acknowledgement of the enormous loss of life
and also the fierce courage under fire that the Anzacs became renowned for
and honours their service and sacrifice.”
The Western Front was a crucial theatre of the First World War
some 295,000 Australians served on the Western Front
where approximately 46,000 Australian lives were lost and more than 134,000 Australians were wounded or captured
Those attending today’s Dawn Service will also walk through the 1km ‘Reflective Trail’
an interactive exhibition taking visitors through the Polygon Wood forest to the Buttes New British Cemetery
The immersive experience will feature a soundscape
with music played by the Australian Army Band
and members of Australia’s Federation Guard delivering two of the four short stories narrated at significant stops along the trail

Corporal Kyle Genner is an Army photographer busy in Belgium documenting official commemoration activities for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Polygon Wood
But Corporal Genner also had family involved in the battle 100 years ago today
and took time to find and reflect at the grave of his kin
Corporal Kyle Genner said it was surreal to see his family name on a headstone in Belgium – the headstone of his great-great-great-uncle Arthur Genner
A commemorative Dawn Service was held this morning at the 5th Division Memorial
Belgium – and Corporal Genner’s photos of that event will be published tomorrow
Corporal Genner also photographed the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate last night
which was attended by Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove and hundreds of other guests
The Battle of Polygon Wood was a component of the Third Battle of Ypres
and was the 5th Australian Division’s first major battle in Belgium

TWO rare photographs of World War I yesterday went on show for the first time at the National Gallery of Victoria to mark Remembrance Day

A rare photograph of World War I by the late Australian adventurer and war artist Frank Hurley
Supplied by the National Gallery of Victoria
by the late Australian adventurer and war artist Frank Hurley
and were acquired by the NGV in August from a Sydney collector
An episode after the Battle of Zonnebeke (1917)
is an interesting example of early photographic innovation
Hurley overlaid three or four negatives to capture the brutality of war
The photograph shows a battle scene with soldiers charging out of trenches
bombs exploding and biplanes flying overhead
The soldiers in the foreground are from one negative
Hurley considered it an accurate depiction of the horrors of war
The photographic materials of the day — glass plates — lacked light sensitivity and so were not able to capture all the movement of trench warfare in a single image
"Hurley was a showman and he felt it was really important to capture the intensity
drama and dynamism of being at the Front," says the NGV's curator of photography
captures what was then considered "the most dangerous corner on Earth"
the intersection of road that crossed the Ypres-Roulers railway in the Flemish province of West Flanders
A small display of works on the theme of war from the NGV's permanent collection will be exhibited at Federation Square until January 25
It will feature seven of Hurley's photographs and other works including George W

COMMENT:More than five years ago the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute (NZMACI) started concept work on a pou maumahara
to recognise and honour the contribution of all New Zealanders in World War I
including the New Zealand Māori Pioneer Battalion
Eventually the Passchendaele Memorial Gardens
Belgium was chosen as the most appropriate place for the pou to be located
representatives of both NZMACI and the New Zealand Government attended the ceremony to unveil and gift this magnificent pou to the people of Zonnebeke
The land where the pou now stands holds a special meaning for us
Even though we come from the other side of the world
many of our men lie there never to return home
The pou acts as an enduring reminder of the service and sacrifice shown by our soldiers and forever commemorates our countries' shared loss and legacy
We are all committed to ensuring this recognition continues forever
the kaupapa pays tribute to our ancestors and provides a long-lasting memorial in a place of considerable prestige
This is the first time Māori contribution to World War I has been recognised in this way – anywhere in the world
What this pou stands for is of great significance
it tells the story of our history acknowledging those who stood on the frontline as well as those who remained home in Aotearoa
Many New Zealanders will be familiar with names and places around this region such as Messines
Most of us have a connection to these places
who was a member of the very first Māori contingent that left for World War I in 1915
He was one of those lucky enough to return in April
Ropihana was killed in the battle of the Somme in 1916
of the way cemetery and at least half of the graves are unmarked
a harsh reminder of the horror that unfolded in that area more than 100 years ago
In the days leading up to the Anzac Day ceremony we talked to many locals
the people of Belgium remain fully committed to recognising and acknowledging the contributions of all allied nations in World War I
I observed the remembrance service at the Menin Gate
This service has been performed every night for the last 101 years
except for an enforced break during World War II
They tell us the crowds are getting bigger every year
The other thing that struck me is that the Belgians are really interested in who we are
and how this is represented through the pou maumahara
There is nothing like this pou in the Passchendaele Memorial Gardens
One represents tumatauenga (war) and faces the north west towards the "jumping off line" for our soldiers in the Battle of Passchendaele
It commemorates those who left New Zealand shores to fight – and the many who never returned
acknowledging those who remained in Aotearoa New Zealand
including those who opposed conscription (compulsory military service)
In the days leading up to the ceremony we received many questions from the Belgium people about what these two sides meant
Our answer was simple – we wish to recognise not only those that fought in the war but also those who
For Māori this is an important part of a broader story that is not well known or understood
What makes the Māori contribution to World War I even more remarkable
be it as members of the New Zealand Māori Pioneer Battalion
or as part of other New Zealand battalions
is that only 50 years earlier many Māori themselves had been subjected to serious and life-changing injustices at the hands of the New Zealand Government in their own country
mainly those iwi and hapū who suffered the most heinous acts by the Crown refused to participate in the war
even after conscription was introduced in 1916
Essentially their point was that "In the 1800s you stole our land
killed our people and imprisoned others without trial
Many Māori were imprisoned because of the stance they took in 1916 and no doubt would have been further stigmatised and alienated as a result
Some 80 years after those Māori were imprisoned for refusing to fight in the war the Crown have
acknowledged that in fact many Crown actions in the 1800s against Māori were wrong
That's perhaps a polite way to explain what happened but nonetheless it represents an important acknowledgement of wrongdoing which shines a light on a dark time in our history
Many would see this Treaty settlement acknowledgement as vindicating the position taken by those Māori in 1916 not to fight for a power they considered to be their oppressor
Numerous historical Crown injustices in the 1800s and early 1900s nearly wiped Māori out culturally and economically
Māori are extremely resilient and have for some time been in a period of sustained cultural and economic growth
NZMACI see our role as supporting that cultural growth
including story telling through our taonga
For NZMACI it is vital that this pou represents those two sides of war and peace
In doing so we hope that visitors to Passchendaele Memorial Gardens look at the pou
think about the contribution all New Zealanders made and also the unique position that Māori were in when they either chose to fight in World War I
This is an important story for all New Zealanders as well
We have been humbled by the reception we have had here in Belgium
The Belgians are extremely hospitable and remain fully committed to recognising and honouring the contributions of all New Zealanders in World War I; they're interested in our story
As the saying goes there are two sides to a story
and we hope the pou maumahara honours those two sides
David Tapsell is a member of the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute's board
He spoke on behalf of the board at the 2019 Anzac Day pou maumahara unveiling and gifting ceremony at the Passchendaele Memorial Gardens in Zonnebeke
Anzac Day is an incredibly special time for many New Zealanders
and I think it’s because so many of us have family members who served in the World Wars and contemporary operations
It’s a time we often think of veterans – for me
it brings up so many poignant memories of attending services with my father
But visit any war cemetery in Europe and you’ll find the graves of the thousands of New Zealanders who did not return from the World Wars
not only in the tragedy of wasted lives but financially
Spending on Defence peaked at 35 per cent of GDP in 1943
despite living in an increasingly unstable world
and this month I announced with the Prime Minister a Defence Capability Plan which outlines our equipment and personnel needs for the next 15 years
This plan delivers $12 billion of commitments in the first four years
including a $9b increase to baseline funding
Within eight years these commitments will take us from our current GDP spend of about 1 per cent to around 2 per cent
I’d invite you to think about this: there is no economic security without national security
I’m so proud to deliver such a significant increase to our NZDF because it’s them we turn to when the chips are down
when missiles are being launched and guns fired in situations that affect New Zealand’s national interests
Time and again it’s the men and women of our Defence Force who step up
It is only right that they have the people
the equipment and the support to do what we ask
I’ll be remembering those who have fought in battles past and hoping we are never again in that situation while knowing that

A Guelph school teacher calls a recent trip to France to connect with Canada’s war past a “life-changing,” both personally and professionally
was chosen to join 24 other school teachers from across the country for the trip through the Juno Beach Centre
It’s called the Educator’s Battlefield Tour and involves involved visiting a number of Canadian-related war sites in France and Belgium
from battlefields to Juno Beach to the cemeteries where Canadian soldiers lay
More than that it involved visiting the towns and villages that were liberated by Canadian troops in World War I and World War II
“We got to walk where our veterans walked and where they served during the two wars
“The idea is that we bring all of our experiences and all the information we gather back into the classroom and help students become more aware of Canadian history
“We were welcomed into these places as representatives of Canada,” McLeish said
In Caen there was a ceremony marking the liberation of the town and McLeish got to address about 200 people about the trip and what it meant to her
McLeish said the reverence the people of France and Belgium have for Canadians because of what they did for them during the wars is obvious
“In the majority of towns we visited
the Canadian flag is flown alongside the flag of France,” she said
Several people remarked how McLeish and the rest of the group were the “descendents of the liberators” and were very open about telling stories of what happened
“One villager said she remembered ‘the day our town was taken from us
but I also remember the day the Canadians came and saved us,’” McLeish remembers
It was this incredibly humbling experience.”
It wasn’t uncommon for the whole group of 25 to be invited to someone’s house for refreshments
Activities included cleaning up a Canadian soldier’s grave and learning his story
“You feel like a proud Canadian.”
One was hearing a man speak at an event where he said “you Canadians
“I think when you make a personal connection with the history it can be quite a powerful moment
“I’ll never forget walking up to the monument and thinking ‘wow
this is where my great grandfather served.’”
Although the details of the two world wars aren’t part of the Grade 3 curriculum
McLeish said she will still find ways of helping those students understand what Remembrance Day is about and how Canadians helped others
“We can help bring those messages to our students
that this is how we are viewed and this is our history.”

An eight-metre tall Māori carving has been erected on the grounds of a battlefield near Passchendaele where thousands of New Zealanders were killed during World War I
fulfilling the dream of one Flemish resident
The pou maumahara (memorial carving) was installed on 15 April in Passchendaele Memorial Park in Zonnebeke
It will be officially unveiled on Anzac Day to commemorate Māori and other New Zealanders who served in the war
2227 Māori served in the Māori Pioneer Battalion
of which 336 died on active service and 734 were wounded
The battalion carried out logistical and construction tasks on the Belgian battlefields
digging trenches and building roads and light railway lines
Māori also served in other units and were among the 18,058 New Zealanders killed during the war
The monument was carved at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute (NZMACI) in Rotorua
but the project was driven by one dedicated Belgian
who grew up on the battlefields of Flanders
has spent more than a decade raising awareness about New Zealand's role in the Battle of Passchendaele and the Western Front
He said he developed a deep affection for New Zealand while studying to become a World War I guide
"Everything you learned was about the British," he said
"There was nothing about the New Zealanders and I found this very sad - it was embarrassing to me
But the more I've learned about the Anzacs
A former chair of the Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917
he helped develop two exhibitions which toured New Zealand and Australia in 2009 and 2017
He also founded the New Zealand Pilgrimage Trust
which helped New Zealand schools and other groups visit the Flanders battlefields
He was named an Honorary Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2015 for his work
He said the idea for the monument took form in 2017
while he was guiding a group of Māori and Pacific Island Anzac descendants in Flanders
"I took them to the Passchendaele Memorial Gardens [in Zonnebeke] and said 'wouldn't it be great to have a Māori carving at the beginning of the gardens
like at the entrance of a marae'," Mr Declerck said
A couple of the descendants put him in touch with the NZMACI and he visited the institute later that year
NZMACI was already creating a World War I commemorative carving for Gallipoli
but after talking with Mr Declerck it was decided Zonnebeke would be a more fitting location
"The Māori contingent had far greater involved in the Western Front," Mr Declerck said
"Only 36 Māori are buried in Gallipoli but 232 died here on the Western Front."
He secured funding from the Zonnebeke Municipal Authority to install the monument
while the New Zealand Government paid for it to be transported to Belgium
a teary-eyed Mr Declerck said he hoped it would make New Zealanders proud
"It's very moving to finally see it standing
Designed by NZMACI master carver Clive Fugill
the pou maumahara was carved by master carver James Rickard along with tutors and students over four years
Mr Rickard spent 10 days in Flanders finishing the monument
While in Belgium he toured the battlefields with Mr Declerck and discovered the graves of his relatives who had been killed nearby
"We found one of my grandmother's cousins in a cemetery and found another relative in a cemetery near Ypres," Mr Rickard said
Mr Rickard also held a carving workshop for Flemish locals
an experience which he said cemented his connection with the Belgian people
New Zealand Ambassador to Belgium Gregory Andrews was at Zonnebeke when the monument put up and said it was a fitting commemoration
"It's an incredible honour to have a piece so identifiably New Zealand in the heart of Passchendaele to tell the story about Māori in World War I," Mr Andrews said
"To end the centenary period with this monument
which will be here for people to see for ever
"It shows the connection between Belgium and New Zealand is strong and enduring
"This is also the first time the role of Māori in the First World War has been recognised in this way in Europe."
The pou maumahara was carved from 4500-year-old swamp kauri laminate and weighs six tonnes
which faces a Passchendaele battlefield where hundreds of Anzac's were killed
more than 4600 New Zealanders died in Belgium on the Western Front in World War I
nearly double the number killed in Gallipoli (2779)
The Battle of Passchendaele in 1917 was one of the most disastrous battles of the war for New Zealand
The worst day of the battle was on 12 October - 843 New Zealanders were killed and 1860 were wounded in about four hours that morning
It remains the worst loss of life on a single day in the country's history
Prince William is arriving on Anzac Day for a two-day visit in which he will meet survivors of the mosque terror attacks
No Anzac Day services planned in the Waitaki District will be changed this year
but the council is working with police to provide a heightened level of security
Despite a possible "donor fatigue" following a string of funding drives in Aotearoa this year
the RSA is still expecting the Poppy Day appeal
Security concerns have prompted Queenstown's Anzac Day dawn parade to be cancelled following the mosque shootings
The Christchurch RSA has a duty to ensure its first Anzac Day commemorations after the terrorist attack run as normally as possible
James Rickard from New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute with the pou maumahara
and new beginnings has been gifted at one of Europe's most prominent battle sites for Anzac Day
Waiariki Labour MP Tamati Coffey spoke on behalf of the New Zealand Government at the unveiling of the 6-tonne pou maumahara at the Passchendaele Memorial Park in Zonnebeke
the pou took four years to make and was carved from 4500-year-old swamp kauri
It stands 8m tall and weighs just over 6-tonnes
Carved by the hands of masters from the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute (NZMACI) at Te Puia in Rotorua
the pou is a tribute to Maori who served in World War I
other New Zealand soldiers and their allies
"The Māori Battalion are not only a source of immense pride for Māori and every New Zealander
they were a turning point for race relations in Aotearoa," Coffey said
Coffey urged all to stand fast against the divisions which exist today
"As we are doing here in Belgium with this pou maumahara
let us build relationships between countries
He said the pou would allow a reflection on the sacrifices made by our service men and women
and honour the legacy and lessons they left behind
"This 'pōhutukawa' will bloom and inform the minds of generations to follow."
"We all have a responsibility to be that bridge in our everyday lives...to value diversity
we can reaffirm our commitment to peace and step forward together."
Te Puia l NZMACI board member David Tapsell said the pou was gifted to the Zonnebeke community to commemorate the two countries' shared wartime history and the significant contribution the Maori Battalion made
He said the pōhutukawa signified new beginnings
welcoming tupuna (ancestors) when they arrived from Hawaiki
as well as being the last tree that stands at the tip of New Zealand's most spiritually significant place (for Maori)
Tapsell said the pou told the story of the impact of World War I on Maori and the New Zealand community
The carving had two sides: Tumatauenga (war) faced northwest towards the "jumping off line" for New Zealand soldiers
and Rongomaraeroa (peace) faced southeast to acknowledge those who stayed home in New Zealand
"The memorial carving celebrates the memory of our ancestors and the sacrifice they made
expressed through our nation's best carvers."
Te Puia NZMACI has been working alongside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Belgian authorities on the project
New Zealand Ambassador to Belgium Gregory Andrews said he hoped the memorial acted as an enduring point of connection between New Zealand communities and the people of Flanders
who had already shown great hospitality to generations of New Zealanders
7,000 people gathered at dusk at Tyne Cot Cemetery in the West Flemish village of Zonnebeke on Saturday evening for a very special event to remember the Battle of Passendale
The “Silence meets the living city” event remembered the thousands of soldiers that perished in what is also known as the Third Battle of Ieper
A candle was lit on all the 12,000 graves in what is the largest of the Commonwealth War Graves Commissions’ cemeteries
The choice of the title "Silent City meets Living City" was not by chance
The municipality of Zonnebeke has 12,000 residents and there are 12,000 graves at Tyne Cot Cemetery
12,000 participants were welcome to stand by the grave of a soldier in the cemetery
A moment of reflection with a unique soundscape
projections and a light show that opened with a reference to the current issues with refugees in Europe
All the graves were lit by a single candle
The stories of some of those that had perished were told
The Antwerp Youth Choir sang an acoustic version of Iron Maiden’s ‘Paschendale’
Another moving part of the ceremony was a rendition of Laurence Binyon’s poem “For the Fallen”
"Silent City meets Living City" ended with the Last Post

A war memorial in Belgium – with a strong connection to Nanango – has been opened in tribute to families who lost “Brothers In Arms” during the slaughter of World War I
The “Brothers In Arms” memorial park was officially opened on September 25
with representatives from fundraising teams from both Australia and Belgium in attendance
The centrepiece is a bronze statue depicting the Hunter brothers
designed by Victorian sculptor Louis Lauman
Jim is tenderly holding Jack’s slumped body after the terrible battles fought near Polygon Wood
The statue was crafted in Melbourne and shipped to Belgium to take pride of place in the memorial park
Jack Hunter was one of five soldiers whose bodies were unearthed unexpectedly during a road construction project 16 years ago
just as Jim had carefully buried him in a temporary grave after Jack succumbed to shrapnel wounds
Jack was mortally wounded when he followed orders to go “over the top” to retrieve a piece of tin reflecting sunlight into the eyes of the troops further down the trench
The chaos and confusion of war meant Jack’s grave was lost in the aftermath of battle
Johan Vanderwalle – an amateur archaeologist who was called to the construction site back in 2006 – visited Nanango to catch up with Hunter family members and describe his dream of creating a memorial
He recalled the moment he first saw Jack’s body
at this moment I thought ‘This is when I will find out who you are
It seems the road surface had protected the temporary grave
There was still skin on his face and his eyes were open
I moved a bit to the right as my shadow was over him
and he was finally laid to rest at the Buttes New British Cemetery at Polygon Wood in 2007 in an event that made world headlines
The Brothers In Arms Memorial Park is located in Zonnebeke
less than a kilometre from where Jack Hunter is now buried
The statue will capture forever the love Jim had for his older brother Jack
and the tragedy that tore him from his family back home in Nanango
