Seventeen-year-old Selin Ali has become the world’s champion in the discipline of trapshooting among junior women
The young athlete has grown up in a family of hunters and has practiced various types of sports
and is known for her high motivation and spirit
Radio Bulgaria contacted her just a day after coming back from championships in Italy and Germany
"What I have achieved there are results that I achieve all the time during training
is much harder because there is anxiety and a lot of excitement
I am very proud to have achieved these results during such great championships
I am glad I managed to cope with all the excitement and stress."
After winning the gold medal at the ISSF World Championship Shotgun in Lonato del Garda (Italy)
"This was not our first race together with Ivan Georgiev
Previously we have participated as a mixed pair in two or three competitions
we did not know whether we would enter the finals and whether we would have a chance to shoot for the medals
But it turned out that the last series was crucial
That's where we did our best and we went to the finals where we competed against the Spanish team for the bronze medal
A few days after the gold and bronze medals from Italy
Selin continued with victories at the ISSF Junior World Championship in the German city of Suhl
Father and personal coach of the young athlete Niyazi Mehmed told us how Selin’s talent was discovered:
"It happened quite accidentally when she was 12 years old
I decided to go to the shooting range to practice before the hunting season and took her with me so she wouldn’t stay alone at home
A former competitive shooter suggested we let her try it
I tried to convince him that shooting was not for her as I had always wanted to keep her away from firearms
But she picked up the rifle and shot down 5 or 6 out of the first 7-8 clay dishes.”
That moment was decisive for Selin and her father
After it the girl continued to practice shooting and quickly started competing
"She was 12 when she picked up a rifle for the first time
she was competing at international level," Selin's father says
"At the age of 14 we participated in world championships and several international competitions
which is a precedent for Bulgaria – no girls or women have achieved this success so far
At the age of fifteen she was fifth in Europe and 16th in the world in the individual discipline for girls
We continued to work hard and the results came.”
Practicing shooting is expensive as cartridges cost money and in order to become good one needs to practice a lot
"Participation in the next women's championships and eventual quota for the Tokyo Olympics next year are our goals
The Olympic Games remain the most important forum,” Selin’s father says
he is a major motivator for Selin – in life and in sports:
"He is the man for whom I continue to do everything
I see that I have talent and I can achieve successes
As a father and daughter we have a relationship that is very difficult to break and we are very close
And there's no way I would give up,” 17-year-old Selin Ali says

Philip Koutev is an emblematic figure of Bulgarian culture
has enjoyed continued recognition and admiration around the globe
he graduated the music school and then the National Conservatory in Sofia
and was immediately (in 1930) appointed bandmaster of the military brass band of the 24th infantry regiment in Bourgas
From 1935 until 1939 he worked at the reserve officers’ school and the military school in Sofia
a time in which he composed much of his work
But it was at the end of the 1940s and the beginning of the 1950s that he chose to begin work on his crowning achievement – the national folklore ensemble that was to evolve intoan institution that has moulded generations of singers
It is the first professional ensemble on such a scale
Ensembles were subsequently set up across the country following that same model
Philip Koutev picked out and trained the musicians himself
created a wide repertoire for each of the three formations
director of the Philip Koutev ensemble and daughter of the renowned composer remembers:
“He was inspired by the prominent figures of the Bulgarian National Revival as a musician and also in his work in the public domain
He was on the board of the Union of Bulgarian Composers
Our older colleagues remember that he never allowed any of the so-called avant-garde musicians to be persecuted for being an “enemy of the people”
as the communist authorities were wont to do
festivals were created to popularize works by Bulgarian composers
as well as the famed folklore festival in Koprivshtitsa
and the Nightingale Nights festival in Aytos
all the work that went into establishing its name and reputation resulted in a decree on its foundation in 1951
The ensemble was to become the first institution to have penetrated the iron curtain (1956)
it has to have aesthetic and ethical value
and preserve everything authentic about folklore
reaching a high standard of craftsmanship and art
In the time I have been director we have never fallen below standard
And that is a powerful piece of advice – to keep the standard and never fall below it.”
“My mother Maria Kouteva was my father’s rock
As a philologist and folklorist at the ensemble
my mother played an important role with her culture
My sister Nadezhda Kouteva is currently staging an exhibition which she dedicated to the anniversary of the birth of Philip Koutev and the centennial birth anniversary of Maria Kouteva
Together with the ensemble we had a concert dedicated to Philip Koutev in Bourgas – the city where he evolved as a professional composer
we held a concert in the crypt of the Alexander Nevsky cathedral in Sofia
We were very careful in the selection of works
We shall also organize a big concert of symphony music – Koutev also composed symphony
and film music before dedicating himself fully to the ensemble.”
