The Bulgarian port of Burgas can now accommodate 260 m long cargo ships
thanks to an infrastructure update co-financed by CEF Transport.
The rebirth28 project constructed a new deep-water berth (berth 28) at the Burgas West terminal in the port of Burgas in Bulgaria
The project created a dedicated area for container handling and storage
along with low-emission solutions for moving cargo between ships and rail
The rail infrastructure at the terminal has also been upgraded to increase rail transport capacity to and from the port.
Key technical details of the new berth 28 include:
with the building of nine caissons for the new quay wall
was used to excavate over 289,000 cubic metres
all nine caissons were successfully installed at the sea bottom
Additional work included the installation of an electric power and lighting system
as well as the renovation of 630 m of railway tracks and adjacent pavement
Construction was completed in January 2025.
The project also includes a shore side electricity supply infrastructure
serving the new quay wall of terminal Burgas West
This system includes two shore power modules
and aims at reducing emissions from ships in port by providing power to vessels while docked.
The upgraded port infrastructure offers several key benefits:
The EU funded rebirth 28 project is part of BMF Port Burgas AD's broader investment plan to develop the Burgas West terminal as a key transport hub along the Baltic Sea - Black Sea - Aegean Sea Core Network Corridor
The project aligns with EU priorities to reduce the carbon footprint of the transport sector by implementing low-emission technologies for cargo handling
CEF Transport is the key EU funding instrument for the development of high performing
with a focus on the development and modernisation of the TEN-T network
CEF has supported 1,666 projects worth almost €44 billion in the Transport sector

BMF's collaboration with Konecranes began 12 years ago when the Bulgarian company purchased four pre-owned Konecranes Gottwald mobile harbour cranes
Bulgarian port operator BMF Port Burgas AD has placed an order for two Generation 6 Konecranes Gottwald ESP.9 mobile harbour cranes
The agreement was finalised in the first quarter of 2025
with delivery anticipated by the fourth quarter of the same year
BMF’s collaboration with Konecranes began 12 years ago when the Bulgarian company purchased four pre-owned Konecranes Gottwald mobile harbour cranes
two of these cranes underwent retrofitting with external power supplies
aimed at lowering onsite emissions and reducing operational costs
This retrofit was extended to the remaining two cranes in 2021
The recent acquisition marks BMF’s first investment in new Konecranes Gottwald ESP.9 cranes
This move is part of BMF’s strategy to enhance terminal handling performance and further its commitment to reducing emissions by equipping the cranes with external power supplies from the start
BMF project manager Nikola Kosev said: “Our existing Konecranes equipment has proven its reliability and efficiency for more than a decade – meeting our expectations every step of the way
“We’re excited to now reach the milestone of investing in two brand new cranes
significantly boosting our performance in handling both project cargo and containers.”
BMF Port Burgas is expanding its equipment to accommodate rising freight volumes
The operator has developed a new deep-water berth at the Burgas West Terminal
enhancing its capacity to handle larger vessels and heavier cargo
This development strengthens BMF’s role as a significant logistics provider in the Black Sea region
Konecranes Port Solutions regional sales manager Andreas Czwalinna said: “BMF’s journey from operating pre-owned cranes to investing in the latest Generation 6 models is a great example of successful growth with Konecranes
“We are proud to have supported them for more than a decade
always finding the right handling and drive solutions for their needs.”
The contract aligns with Konecranes’ Ecolifting initiative
which aims to increase the positive environmental impact of its products and services while helping customers decrease their carbon footprints
Last month, the Saguenay Port Authority in Quebec ordered a Konecranes Gottwald ESP.6B mobile harbour crane for a cargo handling system that is presently being developed

Armoured vehicles producer International Armored Group (IAG) has launched a plant to produce armoured vehicles and drones in the Bulgarian city of Burgas
the Burgas municipality said in a statement on October 1
owned by Bulgarian entrepreneur Anton Stefov
will produce defence equipment to Nato standards
which the alliance has bolstered militarily since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
President Rumen Radev stressed the importance of Bulgaria having its own capacities to manufacture defence products.
“Modern conflicts and the deteriorating security environment show the need for our country to have its own national capacities for the production of its own defence products
which would guarantee reliability in maintenance and continuous adaptation to defence needs,” Radev said
according to a statement from the presidency.
"The opening of the plant is of particular importance for the Bulgarian economy
the development of Burgas and the region,” the president added.
The Bulgarian plant will produce over 150 different types of armoured vehicles and drones for rescue
intelligence and emergency teams in cooperation with Bulgarian partners
The production will be sold on global markets
The new factory is located on an area of 150,000 square metres in the Burgas industrial zone
The initial investment is expected to exceed BGN20mn (€10.2mn)
and the number of employees to reach over 300 people
when I announced that I would invest in Bulgaria
there were people who tried to dissuade me
I can proudly say that we built our first Bulgarian plant in Burgas ahead of schedule
This is the beginning of a production process that will produce different types of combat vehicles – for infantry
meeting the highest Nato standards – STANEG 1
3 and 4,” Stefov said at the launching ceremony as quoted in the statement
He added that all new products will also be manufactured in the Burgas plant
IAG has three other manufacturing facilities located in the US

an extensive underwater archaeological survey in Chengene Skele Bay
adding to the substantial collection of 310 glass vessels discovered in previous years
This discovery was led by Professor Ivan Hristov from the National History Museum
The glass objects are believed to date back to the late 16th or early 17th century
the hypothesis has been proposed that the vessels were most likely produced in a workshop on the island of Murano
in the second half of the 16th century or the beginning of the 17th century
Here the question of the exact dating of the glass objects and the possible shipwreck remains to be determined,” stated the Regional Historical Museum Burgas (RHM Burgas)
located at a depth of 2 to 2.5 meters (6.6 to 8.2 feet)
yielded dozens of whole and fragmented glass vessels
mentioned in European diplomatic records from the 18th and 19th centuries
revealed a concentration of late antique and medieval amphora fragments
including parts of Gunsenin type III amphorae from the 12th-13th centuries
the area known as the monastery port near St
Anastasia Island added another layer to the historical narrative
Underwater inspections here uncovered fragments of ceramic vessels from the 18th-19th centuries
aligning with historical accounts of significant maritime activities
The discoveries from these areas are significant for understanding the trade dynamics and production techniques of glassware in the Balkans during the Late Ottoman period
the newly discovered glass items will be exhibited at the Archaeological Museum in Burgas

Authorities in Bulgaria seized some 436 kilograms of heroin at the Black Sea port of Burgas
the district prosecutor’s office said on Monday
The heroin was stashed in 434 packages hidden inside officially declared cargo in a trailer
The drug haul’s value is estimated at €35 million
"This is the largest amount of drugs seized on the territory of Burgas since the existence of statistical records," said district prosecutor Georgi Chinev
The trailer had arrived at the end of July on a land route from Kyrgyzstan to the Georgian Black Sea port of Batumi
it was due to continue its route to Greece's Alexandroupolis
supposedly transporting cable-laying machines
raised suspicion due to its unusually long stay at the port
anti-drug unit chief Ivan Sokolov told reporters
adding that an X-ray inspection led to the discovery of the concealed heroin
and no persons found involved in this cross-border crime,” Chinev said
which lies on a drug route from the Middle East to Western Europe
has taken massive steps in recent years to prevent drug trafficking
A conviction of drug trafficking in the country now carries up to 20 years in prison
Kazakh oil is becoming more widely used in Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
The Burgas refinery already receives about 40% of its supplies from KazMunayGas

stopped short today (5 February) of linking Hezbollah to a terrorist attack at a Bulgarian airport last summer
despite recent findings suggesting the opposite
The Iranian-backed group is currently not on the EU list of terrorist organisations
In a statement
Ashton said that "reflection" and "serious assessment" were needed over the outcome of an investigation by Bulgarian authorities into the terrorist attack that destroyed a bus at the airport of Burgas on 18 July
>> Read: Terror hits EU soil: Blast hits Israeli tourist bus in Bulgaria
Speaking at a press conference on 5 February
Ashton commended the Bulgarian enquiry but stopped short of making a link with Hezbollah
"We have to reflect on the consequences
we have to consult and come back," she said
Bulgaria’s Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov has today (5 February) linked the attack to Hezbollah
saying that two individuals with links to Lebanon's militant group were involved in the bomb attack
"We have established that the two were members of the militant wing of Hezbollah," Tsvetanov said
"There is data showing the financing and connection between Hezbollah and the two suspects." The two
have lived in Lebanon between 2006 and 2010
the pair held genuine passports from Australia and Canada
adding that Bulgaria had requested cooperation from the law enforcement authorities in those countries and Lebanon
Israel was fast to blame the Burgas blast on Hezbollah and Iran
the Bulgarian authorities said they would name the perpetrators only when they gather sufficient evidence
Tehran has denied responsibility and accused Israel of plotting and carrying out the blast
Hezbollah has not publicly responded to charges by Israel and US agencies that it played a role
the conclusions of the Bulgarian investigation may open the way for the EU to join the United States in including Hezbollah
a powerful Shi'ite Islamist militia that is part of the Lebanese government
Ashton’s reaction appears to indicate that Hezbollah will not be included in the EU list of terrorist organisations anytime soon
the name Hezbollah doesn’t appear in the statement
the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy speaks of the need of an “assessment” of the Bulgarian investigation
as well as to bringing to justice the terrorist who planned the attack
“The High Representative underlines the need for a reflection over the outcome of the investigation
The EU and Member States will discuss the appropriate response based on all elements identified y the investigators,” the statement ends
