wrath and grief – this is the mood pending over the flood stricken town of Byala Slatina
In the sunny Friday afternoon of August 1
a wave of water came as if out of the blue
took the town by surprise and in less than half an hour swallowed streets
Byala Slatina was soaked by 86 liters per square meter of rain
This is 1.5 times more than the usual amount of rainfalls for July
no one expected the Niagara-like wall of water would cause a disaster
the bridge over the river itself and basements
sucking in furniture and household devices and tossing cars around like matchboxes
People were escaping the tide anyway they could
Some managed to sneak out of their cars’ windows or climbed on the roods of their houses
Others were drawn into the muddy waters of the raging Skat River and only just swam to firm ground
“The tide hit me from behind while I was unloading goods for my shop
tells a petrified saleswoman from a local grocery
By Friday night about 250 people were evacuated with heavy machinery and boats
Similar to other places in Northwest Bulgaria
By noon the next day the water had hardly withdrawn
A rumor run around that a second tide wave was coming
“In the flooded areas bandits are said to be pillaging the houses
Who is to protect my property?” a young woman
trying to break the police line and reach her house
accusing local authorities of inaction and incompetence
No one knew where the monstrous mass of water came from
they are letting out dams without warning!” people were shouting angrily
While the servicemen of the civil defense were touring the river-like streets
some people remained on the roofs of the homes
Byala Slatina remained isolated on Sunday
“And what about the inhabitants of the town of Mizia
There the tide has covered one third of the town
owner of a flooded motel was exclaiming compassionately
Electricity and drinking water supplies are resumed
just like hopes that such evil would never strike the inhabitants of the poorest region in the EU again
Now people are expecting solidarity and cooperation on the part of local authorities and EU institutions
This is the only way they would be able to swim out of this nightmare of a water trap
While weather forecasts for the current week predict more and more rains

An organized criminal group of robbers was arrested in the southern city of Plovdiv Friday night
Bulgaria’s Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov announced Sunday
The criminals were busted as they were trying to rob a currency exchange
The three men were not armed and did not fight the policemen but tried to run away and one of them was caught with a police dog
the police have detained seven more gangsters who were also part of the same gang
Two men were busted in Sofia and five – in the northwestern city of Vratsa
One of the detainees in Vratsa is Toni Kostadinov
the former head of the police department in the town of Byala Slatina who was recently fired after it turned out that several of his subordinates had formed a “private traffic police” constantly blackmailing local people for money
Toni Kostadinov is the man who gave the gang information about places with lots of money
His arrest now has prevented his upcoming appointment as a security officer in the Vratsa Regional Court
His impudence is so huge at one point before his birthday
he told the gangsters about a place in the town Miziya and asked them to “make him happy” by robbing it as a birthday present,” Interior Minister Tsvetanov announced
Last month the gang robbed a firm in the town of Troyan
they robbed a bank branch in Kozloduy where they got BGN 120 000
The group was preparing hits in Blagoevgrad
The police have seized a large amount of special technical devices from the detainees and their homes which were used in robberies of banks and companies

Richly decorated men's and women's wedding attire in combination with jewellery
aprons and belts are on display at the “Traditional national costumes” exhibition in Bourgas on the Black Sea
The authentic exhibits coming from different parts of Bulgaria were donated by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences' Institute for Ethnology and Folklore Studies with Ethnographic Museum
A pageant of traditional costumes to the sound of folk music was organized at the opening of the exhibition
Here is more about the event from Anelia Kazakova from Bourgas municipality:
“The Marine Casino cultural centre devoted six weeks to the beauty of traditional Bulgarian clothes
The exhibition showcases the beauty and diversity of traditional garments that go back centuries
the traditional costumes on show here are 150 years old
There are men's and women's items of clothing from different folklore regions - from the Shoppe region
I would like to make mention of a wedding dress from the region of Kyustendil
a costume from the National Revival period from Zheravna
traditional women's clothing from the Bulgarian community in Bessarabia.”
Anelia Kazakova adds that the idea is to bring people in touch with history and tradition and pass them on to the coming generations
Visitors marvel at the array of accessories - bodices
leather shoes and boots from Burdarski Geran village near Byala Slatina
but also pattens for city dwellers and the calfskin tsurvouli (traditional village shoes without soles
laced up to the knee) that are more than 150 years old
One of the costumes from Sofia goes with a pinafore plus gloves
indicating the social standing as well as the age of the woman
Older women would dress in darker clothes - black or maroon for example
on the other hand wore an array of colours as well as embroidery
while they were sewing and embroidering their clothes
women would invariably leave some element unfinished in their shirt
It was believed that this warded off evil
