Bulgaria’s Transport Ministry has extended the tender for the concession of Gorna Oryahovitsa Airport as no bidders have showed up within the original deadline
The new deadline for submitting offers for the underdeveloped airport in the center of Northern Bulgaria
the Transport Ministry announced on its website
The same deadline has been set for the concession of the cargo terminal in Bulgaria’s Plovdiv Airport
The news that there has been no interest in the concession of the Gorna Oryahovitsa Airport comes just as a Facebook group with some 2000 British and Bulgarian members has rallied in support of the development of the airport.
The group entitled "We want Cheap flights from Gorna Oryhavitsa" was started in March 2011 as soon as the Bulgarian government approved a procedure for offering on concession the Gorna Oryahovitsa Airport
which is right outside the city of Veliko Tarnovo
The Veliko Tarnovo region is known for its tourist attractions
which is also the home of a high number of British expats
the Gorno Oryahovitsa Airport serviced about 1000 flights
A concessionaire would be expected to repair the runway and the passenger terminal
and to provide modern navigation and communication equipment
the airport near Veliko Tarnovo had revenues totaling BGN 780 000
The development of the Gorna Oryahovitsa Airport is one of the goals of the Transport Ministry
and is included in the Strategy for the Development of Bulgaria's Transport Infrastructure until 2015
The proposed term of the concession is 35 years and the concessionaires will be determined through an open procedure
The Gorna Oryahovitsa Airport is located right near Gorna Oryahovitsa
It is located (air distance) 200 km away from Sofia
the Gorna Oryahovitsa Airport has not served regular passenger flights but only training and freight flights and occasional charter flights
The airport was set up in 1925 for the use of the Bulgarian Air Force
it opened a direct passenger line to Sofia
The current infrastructure of the airport was constructed in the 1970s and the 1980s
it became the fifth international airport in Bulgaria
The economic hardship in Bulgaria in the following years
In a similar effort to develop Bulgaria's airports, in February 2011, the Cabinet started procedures for finding private operators of the cargo terminal of the southern Plovdiv Airport, and of the civilian airport Shtraklevo near the Danube city of Ruse.

This year's festival of the flat sausage will surprise nicely thousands of fans with a series of events
People will compete to slice the thinnest piece of flat sausage or peel the flat sausage first
In another event competitors will try to arrange the most beautiful meat platter
The culmination of the event envisages the presentation of a national record
which can compete for the Guinness Book of Records

Later the guests and citizens of Gorna Oryahovitsa will have the chance to enjoy the taste of this delicacy
A long-awaited museum exhibition dedicated to the unique sausage will be officially opened on Saturday
Visitors will sink into the atmosphere of the one-time methods and equipment used for the production of this mouth-watering appetizer

The collection is situated in the yard of Gorna Oryahovitsa Museum of History
During the day of the official opening guests will taste meat delicacies produced by the three companies which possess the license for the manufacture of Gorna Oryahovitsa flat sausage

“Our Gorno-oryahovski Sudzhuk is a brand name and can be produced in Gorna Oryahovitsa by three companies only”
Curator of the Museum of History in Gorna Oryahovitsa Plamen Mademov told Radio Bulgaria
the flat sausage has been for many centuries part of the local culture and lifestyle
“The people from Gorna Oryahovitsa have the reputation of good traders and stock-breeders
The local population used to breed huge herds
Some of the biggest livestock markets were held in this region”
stock-breeders were struggling to provide enough food for their animals for the winter period
That is why at the end of each summer they had to slaughter some of their cattle
This was how the unique recipe of the flat sausage emerged.”
the recipe of the Gorna Oryahovitsa flat sausage is kept in full secrecy
The only thing we know about this irresistible sausage is that it is made entirely of beef and a mixture of aromatic herbs picked in the nearby fields
its taste is due to the local dry climate
the local people decided to improve the processing technology
“During the first stage of the production process people dice and fill the meet in dried and salted intestines”
“Its quality depends on the local climate and atmospheric peculiarities
It turns out that the white mould which covers the flat sausage forms well in the region of Gorna Oryahovitsa
It preserves the sausage and makes it last longer
when butchers used to say that it was time for them to clean their knives
The production of the flat sausage was once seasonal
people adopted new production technologies and started to use new drying facilities and now the Sudzhuk is made all year round.”
Licensed producers claim they do not use any preservatives and that their product does not differ from the one made by their ancestors some 3 centuries ago
Those who join the forthcoming festival of flat sausage in Gorna Oryahovitsa will have the chance to check the qualities of this product

Following full admission to the Schengen area
Bulgaria has all the prerequisites to become a regional cargo hub
That is why the country must develop the North-South and East-West transport corridors
Experts who took part in the First Annual Forum on Transport
They did not fail to point out the unsatisfactory quality of the road and railway infrastructure
the lack of multimodal terminals and the insufficient symbiosis between road
which are stumbling blocks for Bulgaria.
Bulgaria and Romania are expected to fully enter the Schengen borderless area in January
if all other member states officially agree to this on December 12
A meeting of the interior ministers of the European Union will be held in Brussels on that date
North Macedonia and Turkey are not very happy about our admission to Schengen," said Simeon Ananiev
Chairman of the Green Transport Cluster Board of Directors
this is because the route of cargo transportation will change – the corridors running from Alexandroupolis and from Thessaloniki to Vidin will be strengthened
Ananiev is of the opinion that “we should not have a corridor mindset
“Cargo is like water – it follows the path of least resistance
I am optimistic that Bulgaria will become a regional hub.”
He commented that at the initiative of the Argentine ambassador
at which the possibilities for Bulgaria to become a redistribution hub for the Americas were discussed
This means that shipments would arrive only by plane
before being distributed via road and rail infrastructure
we will be able to gather cargo from all neighboring countries and serve as a distributor
Schengen will help create such centers for concentration and redistribution of flows."
Ananiev said that large investors are interested in building such hubs
but they also want these to be located close to a railway connection and highways
and if there is an airport – that’s a bonus
Gorna Oryahovitsa can be such a hub for integrating all types of transport
The construction of an intermodal terminal in Gorna Oryahovitsa was a project included in one of the initial versions of the country’s Recovery Plan
and Ruse was chosen as the location for its construction
Bulgaria was unable to implement the project
as it turned out that the construction would be too expensive
The Bulgarian Ministry of Transport is looking for other European sources of funding
Bulgaria's entry into the Schengen area will be "like a breath of fresh air," commented Nikolay Rashkov
representative of the Union of International Carriers in Brussels and member of the European Commission's transport expert group
He spoke about a study made at the beginning of the year
which showed that at the three border points - near Vidin
Ruse and Kulata - there are about 50-60 thousand crossings per month
there has been a double increase in cars from third countries
which created additional congestion at the borders
The average delay at Vidin was 18 hours per car
which is very unprofessional for a border between two European countries," he pointed out
He added that the huge lines of trucks are due to increased checks for those entering from third countries
as well as the lack of good coordination between Bulgarian and foreign inspection bodies
Rashkov added that the losses to the Bulgarian economy from this whole situation in just one year are about half a billion euros
It is important to hear the exact date for our entry and what the verification procedure will be."
Asked how the automotive industry will maintain its competitive advantage after Bulgaria's accession to Schengen
Pimk Holding CEO Vasil Lyaskov commented that competition can refine the market and that the lack of it "leads to arbitrariness and the quality of service for people declines." He emphasized the need to develop infrastructure so that the country can truly feel the positive effect of accession to the Schengen area
This summer we had a situation when trucks were stuck in Vidin for 36 hours.”
The presence of good infrastructure would allow for greater deployment of intermodality and multimodality
He noted that although these concepts are well-established in Western Europe
the lack of adequate infrastructure in Bulgaria hinders their implementation
He explained that instead of using Bulgarian ports and terminals
large flows of cargo are redirected to ports in Romania and Turkey
Companies prefer the stability and efficiency of existing infrastructure in these countries," he added
Bulgaria is not perceived as a strategic hub
The average customs processing time in Hungary is 24 hours
while in Bulgaria this process is significantly slower," said Lyaskov
The railway infrastructure also remains a serious problem
Lyaskov stressed that the current state of railway connections and train stations in Bulgaria does not meet modern standards
passing through Bulgaria is like traveling by cart - from the Turkish border to the Serbian one it takes up to 48 hours
and the wait at the borders itself is between 24 and 48 hours
a similar distance is covered in 12-16 hours
According to Deputy Transport Minister Zhivko Petrov
multimodality is a way of organizing transportation and in order to have this
3 factors are needed - a regulatory framework
but "we have a problem in implementing the regulatory framework."
and the national administration needs to gain the conviction that it plays on the same side as the business sector
Petrov added that there is also something to be done in terms of infrastructure
The Deputy Minister admitted that in railway transport “we do not have even one complete line”
We need to have one route ready before we start another
geopolitical events have brought into focus the so-called "middle corridor"
a transport connection between Europe and Asia via the Black Sea
The Deputy Minister pointed out that Bulgarian ports have the potential to develop and take on more cargo and stated that "we are lagging behind Constanta
which is almost 100% full." He explained that while the port of Burgas is making progress and has been developing well in recent years
even if it has sufficient capacity and space
This is the moment when we need to hurry up so as not to be bypassed," the deputy minister emphasized
There is no way Bulgaria can be a regional hub without aviation
founder and manager of the Bulgarian Aviation Industry Association (BAIA)
and he called for small regional airports not to be converted into solar parks
companies like Amazon and DHL have already overburdened Leipzig Airport and are starting to look for new bases
Ivandzhikov is of the opinion that small airports should be given a concession so that they can become cargo hubs
He cited numerous examples from the world and emphasized the need for modern infrastructure in order for Bulgaria to take its place on the global logistics map
Ivandzhikov pointed out that e-commerce has significantly increased the demand for cargo aviation services
Bulgaria already has an airline with a Boeing 747 that operates cargo flights from China to our country
and from here the cargo continues to Europe
He warned that cargo flow from China is decreasing due to geopolitical and economic changes
the cargo flow from Vietnam and other Asian countries was increasing
“Last month I visited China and Vietnam and saw great interest in Bulgaria as a possible logistics hub,” he added
Ivandzhikov mentioned that in talks with representatives of logistics associations in Asia
the construction of a brand-new airport with a cargo terminal in the region is being discussed
the better chance we have of attracting these investments,” he stressed. One of the most serious problems that Ivandzhikov identified is the lack of appropriate infrastructure for handling large cargo aircraft
but there is no equipment for its effective unloading
the situation is even more difficult - they are simply not prepared for such operations," he said
this leads to a redirection of cargo flows to Romania and other neighboring countries
There is a need for a zone where cargo can move directly from a plane to a train or truck
This will not only attract investments but will also bring huge revenues for the state from customs duties
Ivandzhikov reminded that Bulgaria has already missed the opportunity to establish itself as a passenger aviation hub
Back in the day the now-defunct national carrier Balkan had 52 aircraft
Bulgaria lost its position and traffic went to Turkey
Bulgaria risks repeating the same mistake with cargo transport
the future lies in innovations such as cargo drones and unmanned aircraft
He commented that major manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus are already developing projects for unmanned cargo aircraft that will connect Europe and the United States
companies like Dronamics are also advancing with similar technologies
but regulations are significantly slowing down the process," he noted
drones will first be used in limited areas - over deserts
Bulgaria should invest in infrastructure for vertiports - places for drone landings and take-offs
The Bulgarian Cabinet has approved a procedure for offering on concession the currently inactive passenger airport of Gorna Oryahovitsa located in the very center of Northern Bulgaria
The goal of the government is to find a concessionaire that would help attract passenger and freight traffic and will invest in the infrastructure and modernization of the airport
the Gorna Oryahovitsa Airport has not served regular passenger flights but only freight flights and occasional charter flights

The municipal council of the town of Gorna Oryahovitsa has decided against firing Dr
over the death of a prematurely born baby which caused a scandal last week
"This is an extremely unpleasant case which casts a shadow on the maternity ward and the entire hospital
We used to be proud of this ward because the conditions there are very good
and it serves over 100 000 people from six municipalities
with 637 so far this year," the Mayor of Gorna Oryahovitsa Yordan Mihtiev commented as cited by BGNES>
The municipal council voted by a margin of only 2 votes to keep Kozhuharov as head of the hospital
The municipality expects the results from the investigation into the case of the competent authorities about whether the doctors are guilty or not

He insisted that the authorities should be talking about an abortion rather than a childbirth
There is a dispute of whether the fetus qualifies as a baby

Lenkov believes that if the baby was born in a specialized clinic with all latest top-notch equipment
that this is possible in only two places in Northern Bulgaria – the University Hospital in Pleven

Pavlova came to Bulgaria on Saturday to attend a memorial service for her late husband, who was born on August 6, 1960 and this is why the family had chosen this day to honor Pavlov's memory.

"Today I am going to congratulate you on the arrival of the New Year and to inform you that I have received your portrait
I wish you pleasant new acquaintances in the New Year,” reads a greeting on a card from December 30
The image depicts young men in traditional Bavarian clothing and the card is part of the rich collection of the Gorna Oryahovitsa Historical Museum
some of them dedicated to Easter and of course
“The cards carry the messages of their senders in Russian
Today thanks to them we know about people’s anxieties
hopes and dreams,” says Temenuga Yordanova from the museum
the holiday cards of the early 20th century include photos of beautiful girls
families gathered in front of the Christmas tree
as well as fairy-tale characters carrying gifts
There are those that speak for themselves about their time
such as a card with children in a prayer pose and a sword standing under the tree instead of a gift
One of Temenuga Yordanova's favorite cards shows children playing in the snow
dressed in colourful clothes and throwing bread crumbs at the birds
sending Christmas cards became a fashion almost simultaneously with the rest of Europe – in the late 19th and early 20th century
But they were known even during the times of the Ottoman Empire in the cities of Ruse
The former were black and white and subsequently people started colouring them
The family of Knyaz Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha is responsible for the first illustrated card in the Principality of Bulgaria
This happened back in 1896 on the occasion of baptizing the heir to the throne in the Orthodox faith
From the message written on its back it becomes clear that this was a Christmas card
It is not kept in the museum in Gorna Oryahovitsa
After 1898 the card with the image of Boris started to be issued almost every year and people accept it as a Christmas card,” Temenuga Yordanova explains
“Ferdinand also started a family collection of greeting cards
enriched after his abdication by Tsar Boris III and later by Simeon II
it is one of the richest in the world and has won many international awards
It is still maintained by former Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.”
The Historical Museum in Gorna Oryahovitsa keeps 1,589 Christmas cards
They are different and have a multifaceted interpretation depending on the period in which they were sent
Which are the most unusual and interesting ones
“We can divide them into several categories,” Mrs
“The first one contains the oldest Christmas message
The second category includes one of the most valuable cards – one with the image of young Boris III in a military uniform from 1912
In the third category we can include the oldest with images of children pulling a sled and a New Year's message from 1917.”
Mass mailing of postcards started in Bulgaria after the Second World War
Among the images the most outstanding are those of factories and cooperative farms and among the wishes one sees some for peace and socialism
There are postcards with New Year's greetings from 1906 to 1922
which look unusual at first glance as they show a walk in the woods
But no matter how the greeting is presented
all of the greetings for the holidays are sincere
The totalitarian regime in Bulgaria pushed the idea of Santa Claus and Christmas out of the minds of the youth and replaced it with the character of Dyado Mraz (Grandpa Frost) and atheism
It was not until 1976 that the Bulgarian Post issued the first greeting card with the image of Dyado Mraz
“More and more digital cards are being sent these days and we can say this way the past manages to meet the future and greeting cards continue to touch people’s hearts and remind them to be good not only on holidays
I want to wish Radio Bulgaria's listeners to open a new page in their lives
happiness and grace to them and their families
Don't let the hectic daily routine kill traditions!” Temenuga Yordanova said in conclusion

"I prayed for the health of the doctors while I was in the hospital
because I saw how difficult it was while they had to tend to the numerous patients
And no one is insured against this insidious disease," says priest Zoran Mamuchevski to BNR correspondent in the region of Veliko Tarnovo
only days after defeating Covid-19 with the help of doctors at the hospital in the town of Gorna Oryahovitsa
Priest Zoran is 35 years old and is from North Macedonia
He completed his studies in Cambridge but he chose the small town of Gorna Oryahovitsa
"Everyone says to themselves - this is a virus that does not affect young people
and I am a person who plays sports and almost does not get sick
no one can say for sure that the virus will pass them by
this disease is very insidious," says the priest
He recalls that the symptoms of the coronavirus infection suddenly struck him
Most unexpectedly he got severe muscle aches
Then the young priest isolated himself and sought medical attention
"The first thing I did was to quarantine myself so that I can take responsibility for other people
until at one point I felt shortness of breath and then I went to take an X-ray of my chest
It really turned out that I had bilateral pneumonia and I had to be hospitalized."
Father Zoran Mamuchevski saw an elderly family being discharged one day
who was receiving oxygen treatment and whose condition was deteriorating
unable to breathe and was transferred to the intensive care unit
The other person next to me also had difficulty breathing
coughed very hard and could not get up because he was dizzy
There was a woman who had begun to improve
And at some point you do not know what effects this virus will bring to your body
This disease destroys you not only physically
so it is important to maintain one’s mental health
Now Father Zoran is recovering from a severe coronavirus infection at home
his three children also contracted the disease
His wife is also feeling good as she is about to give birth to their fourth child at any moment
we look to the future with hope and a spark that something good is coming," says the priest
"This ordeal will pass and we must be aware that we will all go this way and that it is not something we must somehow deny
I have many acquaintances who have gone through the disease – some in a more severe form
The most important thing is to keep calm and have faith
to remain responsible to each other and not to enter into conspiracy theories that this is all a scam”
Father Zoran will return to the Church of the Holy Three Saints in Gorna Oryahovitsa
There the work has not been interrupted for a single day
a hundred people in need are given a hot lunch every day
Based on an interview of Zdravka Maslyankova
BNR correspondent in Veliko Tarnovo region
The beginning of aviation under the hills was set in the distant 1928
when the first test flight Sofia-Plovdiv-Yambol-Burgas was performed
the city's airport was officially opened
located on 80 hectares to the left of the road to Asenovgrad
temporary civil flights between Sofia and Plovdiv began
over 1,500 passengers were transported in 45 days
and Plovdiv Airport served an average of 25 planes a day
The flights on the already regular line Sofia-Plovdiv-Burgas-Varna and back started in May of the following year
was also opened in the building of the former Fifth Air Regiment
the airport moved to the area of the village of Graf Ignatievo
and a year later in the Otechestven Glas regional newspaper an article was published entitled: THE TRACK OF PLOVDIV AIRPORT IS COMPLETED
The same article reported on the expansion of the charter flights of the Bulgarian airline BALKAN to Berlin
1965 the new reception building was completed
and next year the aircraft parking lot was expanded to meet the needs of the winter charter program
During these first years at its new location
Plovdiv Airport served the regular domestic passenger lines to Burgas
The airport has been declared a national champion several times
which transported greenhouse products with IL-18
and in 1972 alone more than 5,000 tons were transported
Domestic scheduled flights were discontinued in 1980
This led to the new relocation of Plovdiv Airport - in the area of the village of Krumovo
as well as a Flight Management Tower were built
the first TU-134 aircraft with a charter flight from Amsterdam landed
which started a new chapter in the history of the Plovdiv Airport
During this period there was an increase in charters to Malta
2009 the first sod of a new passenger terminal was made
through which 500 thousand passengers could be served annually
The cost of the construction was BGN 45 million
which includes the construction of four new aircraft stands (there are 12 of them that way)
The terminal was designed by architect Petko Yovchev
equipped with 10 check-in counters for handling departing passengers and the extended platform
The landing of the Boeing 737-800 from London (Stansted Airport) on November 3
2010 started the first year-round international passenger flights to and from Plovdiv Airport
Ryanair currently operates regular flights to Dublin and London (Stansted)
while the other low-cost carrier operating at the airport
Regular lines from Plovdiv to Bursa and Istanbul are also about to be opened
the negotiations for the restoration of the lines to Milan
Barcelona and Frankfurt for next year's summer season are expected to conclude
The airport's development plans include launching charter flights from Plovdiv to Antalya
A regular bus line from the city is also expected to open
but a public tender for the selection of a carrier has not yet been announced
The most convenient way for the moment remains
especially if you are more than one passenger
The rate would be around BGN 17-20 depending on the part of the city that is the starting or final destination

Arm wrestling is rarely talked about in Bulgaria as a prestigious sport
but we can boast with being a world power in this sport as our athletes have become European and world arm wrestling champions more than once
Thanks to athletes such as Plamen Dimitrov
arm wrestling enjoys great popularity among young people in Bulgaria
There are many strong men all over the country who are looking for increasingly new challenges
The convenience of this sport is that the rules are clear and anyone can train on their own
even equip their own training room at home
And appearing in a competition is not tied to membership in a sports club or the mediation of a proven coach who could pave your way to European and world competitions
Dozens and perhaps hundreds of small arm wrestling tournaments organized by local clubs are held in the Bulgarian capital Sofia and across the country
The champion Todor Zelenkov is the pride of the entire town of Gorna Oryahovitsa
and his fellow citizens congratulated each other on the victory on social networks and proudly shared footage from the award ceremony itself
He has been addicted to this sport since he was a child
and he has been preparing for a competition for only two years in the local club "Lokomotiv 96"
Competition in arm wrestling in Todor's hometown is great
he manages to be a strong rival to the best in the discipline
"The most contagious is the example of my two coaches
who are also from Gorna Oryahovitsa," says Todor Zelenkov and continues:

High air pollution was registered over many places across the country through the first days of 2017
In the capital Sofia the concentration of fine dust particlas in the air exceeded the norms up to five times
Pernik and others suffered the impact of air pollution as well
Noise and Radiological Monitoring Department with the Environment Executive Agency comments:
car and public transport harmful emissions and unfavorable weather conditions such as low temperatures and the lack of any wind are the main reasons for fine dust air pollution
The agency has registered so far excessive concentration across 15 settlements
as it is highest in Plovdiv – 3.15 times higher and in Burgas – 2.4 times
People with lung diseases and asthma represent the vulnerable groups among the population
The highest concentrations were measured on January 2 in Sofia
The latter is 50 micrograms per cubic meter and the values are averaged from 00:00 am to 12:00 pm over 24 hours
One should bear in mind that Sofia is situated in a hollow
where any lack of wind and low temperatures cause the holding of atmosphere polluters which accumulate in the ground layer.’
We tackle the current issue and its possible solutions with Boris Bonev from the Save Sofia NGO:
‘According to the World Health Organization fine dust
cancer… Data of the healthcare ministry shows an average death toll of around 55 people per 100,000
Some 800 – 900 people are presumed to die in Sofia annually due to bad air
Free public transportation over pollution peak days
car traffic interchange of odd and even registration plates
establishment of more walking zones and a change of urban environment in a manner which makes it more attractive to pedestrians and bikers
The municipality might change the way of local tax and toll forming
Right now newer cars which are much more environmentally friendly pay a tax which is 2.8 higher than the one of old cars’ owners
It is essential for the municipality to realize the problem and to take preventive measures for reduction of traffic and prioritization of public transport
Usually they don’t seem to be interested in the problem until it is too late
Statistics says that the number of public transport users declines despite subway network expansion due to the irregular movement of that transport
We need more bus lines and tramway detents; also the introduction of an integrated ticket system is necessary
That shocking 60% increase in the price of a single ticket pushed away many from any public transport usage
as lots of people find it even cheaper to drive their own cars
The changes that we discuss would affect our wallets
but it won’t be shocking and unbearable if done in an intelligent manner
Data of the healthcare ministry shows that each third Sofia kid has some form of asthma
I think the health of our children is much more important than EUR 5 – 10 more paid per year on road tax
The municipality should define its priorities.”
Sofia Municipality refrained from any comments
