a former Northeastern University forward who’s one of the few women of color coaching girls’ high school hockey in Massachusetts
When Nikki Petrich left to play hockey for Shattuck-St
her mother told her she could always return to Flint
Petrich has been on a hockey journey that hs taken her from Michigan to Minnesota to Massachusetts
where she is believed to be the only Black woman currently coaching a girls’ high school or prep school program
Petrich is in her first season coaching at Lawrence Academy in bucolic Groton
The 39-year-old former Northeastern University forward and captain is 9-11-0 overall and 3-5-0 in conference play behind the bench in Independent School League competition this season
She led Canton High School to a 19-3-4 record last season and to the Elite Eight in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division 2 hockey tournament after taking the team to the MIAA final in 2023
associate registrar for girls/women's hockey in Massachusetts
Part of that is rooted in a hockey pedigree forged in Flint
was a police officer who played for the department team and worked security for the Flint Generals of the old International Hockey League
“I have just fond memories of always going to Generals games and skating with those guys
“And I actually ended up taking skating lessons from some of them and skating with them during their practices.”
a retired Flint firefighter who founded the Flint Inner-City Youth Hockey Program said Petrich began playing mostly against boys and quickly excelled in hockey
“She took off out of the local scene pretty quick,” said Phillips, a 2019 Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award recipient who is director of culture and community for the Ontario Hockey League
“Because there wasn’t that level of talent in hockey here in Flint
Petrich went on to play girls’ hockey for Shattuck-St
where her classmates included Sidney Crosby
“What a place to be able to say you went to school or are hoping to go to school for what they can provide academically and then athletically,” she said
She earned a scholarship to Northeastern, where she became one of the first Black women to play for the Huskies
43 assists) in 131 NCAA Division I games from 2004-08 and was captain her senior year
“She was just a really naturally gifted forward,” said Northeastern assistant coach Lindsay Berman
Petrich got into coaching as her college playing career was winding down in 2008
when Nick Carpenito asked if she would help him coach Northeastern’s women’s club hockey team
I don't think I could ever get the same feeling coaching as playing
because I'm not in control of the game,’” she said
have a larger part in the outcome of the game.”
But once Petrich got a coach’s whistle in her hand
now associate coach for Northeastern’s Division I women’s team
“It was a very natural transition for her,” he said
“Because she was so fresh from her playing career
she was able to specifically draw what she had to do as a player
And she played for some super-knowledgeable coaches that was she was able to draw from.”
“I would love to coach collegiately for a few years and then
my end game is to coach in the Olympics,” Petrich said
Carpenito said he thinks the “sky’s the limit” for Petrich when it comes to coaching
“You’re going to have go through the muck a little bit before you get to where you want to be,” he said
“But I think if she’s willing to take that leap
she is going to do some incredibly special things in her coaching career.”

So I talked with the sheriff about getting credentials to be a law enforcement chaplain."
Louis County Law Enforcement Chaplaincy had only recently started
The idea of the program was to help those in the law enforcement community find healthy ways to deal with the stress of the job and stand by and be present for difficult occasions
"A chaplain is a clergy person who is a really good pastor who can bring the church where the church can't go," Petrich said
"I can bring the love of God into crisis situations
I can bring a listening ear in a stressful time
And even at scenes where everything is happening and unfolding really quickly
Petrich said being a law enforcement chaplain meant being on-call and available to respond when needed
he could be there for 10 minutes or three hours
Petrich said that for every major emergency event for the past 34 years
there was a chaplain present to help lend guidance and peace
the most difficult situations as a chaplain were crisis situations when someone died
and a death notification to the family had to be made
"Someone's life has changed; they're about to have their worst day ever because of what's happening
and we become the messenger of that change," Petrich said
"The world as they know it is not going to be the same."
Petrich said what matters most during that difficult moment is meeting people where they're at and providing what peace and understanding that they can
"We give them the message that they need to hear and reassure them that even in this time
We're going to hang in with them as long as they need," Petrich said

We try to help them make sense of this unexpected reality."

What kept Petrich coming back to serve every year
He developed relationships with several law enforcement people over the years and has overseen a lot of retired police officer funerals

As many parents struggle to find childcare in the area
one recent closure has some placing blame on the owners
Several parents reached out to WDIO in September upon finding out that Building Blocks Learning Center was being evicted for being behind on rent payments
The business was renting the lower level of Duluth Vineyard Church
Building Blocks Learning Center closed with plans on eventually finding a new space
the owners say the finances and the lack of funding in the field are to blame for the closure
RELATED: Discussing potential solutions to the childcare shortage
What do we pay our staff so that we can continue to give care
that quality care that we did?,” said owner Lucas Petrich
Court documents show that this is the second time Building Blocks Learning Center has been evicted from a building for not paying rent
Lucas Petrich and Building Blocks Learning Center LLC rented a commercial property on Haines Road in Duluth from BellaGrace Properties LLC starting on July 1
the lease was for five years with rent of $9,000 a month
The court claim alleges that Building Blocks fell behind in rent payments and entered into a rent modification agreement in April of 2020
Rent was going to be modified for March through December of 2020
Building Blocks again fell behind in payments
Building Blocks entered into Lease Modification and Forbearance Agreement with BellaGrace Properties
“Building Blocks confessed to judgment in favor of BellaGrace in the amount of $57,580.00 in a Confession of Judgment attached to the agreement
The agreement provided that BellaGrace “could file the Confession of Judgment with the St
Louis County Court in the event of a default.” The court documents continue
saying that Building Blocks agreed to “pay and reimburse BellaGrace for all of its attorneys’ fees and expenses incurred in connection with a default.”
Building Blocks failed to pay the money owed to Bella Grace
Building Blocks vacated the property by September 10
2023 but are accused in the court documents of leaving it with “with damage beyond commercially reasonable wear and tear.” There are also allegations in the court documents of damage to door frames
claiming that the eviction was done so that another renter could expand within the building
He also disputes the amount owed.“He [the building owner] is trying to- his argument is that we didn’t leave it broom ready
He’s actually remodeled the space,” said Petrich
“And he’s trying to put some of that bill on me
redid the carpet and repainted for the vet center
And then some of the ground was ripped up when he fixed the foundation
and he’s trying to pin that on me too.”
Building Blocks Learning Center entered into a new lease agreement with Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Duluth
The agreement was for Building Blocks to rent the lower-level space from September 1
the office manager of Vineyard wrote a letter to Luke [Lucas] and Holly Petrich that provided Building Blocks with a notice of non-renewal of the lease agreement
“You have not made any payments toward your April or May rent and you currently owe $12,018.94.” and gave Building Blocks 90 days to move from the premises
“If you are able to get caught up on your payments before September 1
2024 we would consider the possibility of establishing a new lease with you but
first we need to see commitment from you to make your payments as agreed to in the lease.”
we would have to look somewhere else or come up with a plan to leave
same conversations with the church to try to make things right,” said Petrich
“Then when I finally got enough to satisfy what everybody was looking for to stay
when that money was finally caught up from everything
Vineyard filed an Eviction Action Complaint in District Court and put up signs to provide families with information on the impending closure
Dear families and staff of Building Blocks
Inc (BBLC) was leasing the lower level of our church to provide daycare for area families
Our heart was to help fulfill a very real need within our community for childcare
BBLC was in default of their lease agreement and was delivered a notice of non-renewal effective August 31
We have worked with BBLC to find a solution and allow them to remain operational in our space
but unfortunately a resolution could not be reached
We have been asking BBLC to make necessary arrangements and notify families and staff of their plans
It is our understanding that this has not happened
We have authorized the filing of an eviction complaint with the court and felt that we needed to alertfamilies and staff of the situation
This situation is heart wrenching and not what we had envisioned
If you have any questions that the church may be able to answer please call 218-525-3462
Lucas and Holly Petrich sent a letter to parents on Sunday
September 8 to notify them that September 20 would be the last day for their childcare services until a new facility is found
“We were trying to figure out what we were doing
because we were trying to extend our deadline here with our attorney,” said Petrich
“We were also trying to figure out where we could possibly move to in the shortest amount of time.”
Several parents contacted WDIO about this announcement
Most parents refused to speak on record out of concern that doing so would make it more difficult to find another childcare spot for their child
One parent spoke anonymously with a variety of concerns expressed
we had already heard some rumors of other financial situations going on
Some of us had already started seeking other child care facilities
But it was just horrible thinking that in the meantime
Building Blocks was filling our spots,” said the parent
“Other parents had to kind of transfer on the fly or figure out something to do because they gave us the notice less than two weeks in advance
So to try to find child care in less than two weeks is almost impossible.”
The anonymous parent had been with Building Blocks since they were at the previous facility and questions how there were two evictions
knowing as a parent that I’m paying almost $1,000 a month
that I think their highest-paid teachers are getting paid $17 an hour
unless those teachers are making over $20 an hour
there’s no way that the money’s
Lucas and Holly Petrich plan on finding another space for Building Blocks to rent
emphasizing the need for childcare in the Duluth area
RELATED: Addressing the childcare crisis in Duluth
“We are going to have our license is going to change from open to pending reopen which means that we will have time to look for a new facility if we wish to continue to do this
I just had a conversation this morning with a developer who’s redeveloping an old building and has a sprinkler system and we could have space on a main level to grade
So it’s going to be a clean slate so we can come in and potentially redesign or design it in a way that is going to be financially feasible for everybody,” said Petrich
This is a major hurdle that we’ve had to overcome you know but who doesn’t love a good comeback story right?”
Petrich also emphasized the need for childcare funding at a state level
“Look at who you’re voting for this fall
look at that because they are the ones who make these decisions on what can be paid for and what isn’t
get on them hard that this needs to be subsidized,” said Petrich
“Two weeks ago we announced the devastating news that we were going to have to close Building Blocks Learning Center
and most importantly for the children we have loved and cared about for the last ten years
but this is due to the fact that we had to choose between paying our hard working
A disruption in funding created an impossible decision
one that we shouldn’t have to make but we were forced to because the business model of childcare doesn’t work
The only way to stop childcares from closing around the state is a publicly funded multi-delivery system that can support the providers
that so deeply care about the families and children we cared for and the teachers that worked alongside us
After working with our licensor from MNDHS Building Blocks’ license is set on a pending reopen status
This means when we find the right space we can begin the process to reopen and retain our status with the state
and continue to care for the children in our community
BBLC has also begun initial conversations with a developer to rehab a new space that could be designed specifically for the needs of the center which would maximize the space in order to be fully staffed and fully enrolled in order to meet the financial obligations associated with operating a childcare center.”

Windham's Carlos Bruton and Jack Eye made up one of Portage County's great backfield duos this football season.
Both earned all-state recognition with the release of the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association's Division VI and VII teams Monday. So did one of their leading linemen, fellow Bombers senior Brandon Petrich.
Eye earned first team all-state honors at linebacker after racking up a school-record 163 tackles, including 31 for loss, along with four sacks, three interceptions and three forced fumbles. He was also one of the area's top ballcarriers with 157 rushes for 1,763 yards — more than 11 yards per carry.
Bruton earned second-team honors at running back after tallying 111 carries for 1,141 yards — more than 10 yards per carry. He was second on the team with 22 total touchdowns. He also starred on special teams, with five return touchdowns (three on kickoffs, two on punts), and on defense, with 80 tackles (11 for loss).
Petrich earned honorable mention all-state honors after paving paths for Bruton and Eye all season. Petrich was also a force on defense for the 10-win Bombers, finishing second on the team in tackles (96) and tackles for loss (19).
Also in Division VII, Waterloo seniors Landon McClain and Matthew Ralston both earned honorable mention after making waves through the air throughout the season. McClain passed for 1,233 yards and 15 touchdowns, with Ralston accounting for nearly half of those yards (498) and touchdowns (seven).
Rootstown's Brian Youngblood also made honorable mention after racking up 92 tackles, nine for loss, and earning team MVP honors.

two young entrepreneurs from France began scouring the Texas Hill Country
looking to buy land and hotels for a new venture
business partners Franklin Dusserre and Dylan Petrich had talked to dozens of real estate agents and toured more than 120 properties in Blanco
and other small towns with growing tourist presences
Word was getting out that a couple of guys definitely not from Texas were in the market
“They were a bit confused by us,” Petrich says
“We didn’t dress like we were from Texas
one of the six hotels he’s since purchased
And we are looking for a hotel.’ ”
Today the Austin-based French Cowboys wear boots of their own (Tecovas for Petrich; French Chelsea boots by Aigle for Dusserre)
and they’ve adopted some of the swagger for which Texans are known
With $35 million in backing from investors
they’ve snapped up six eclectic and old-timey hotels in Central Texas
They also manage a stable of almost one hundred vacation homes in the same area
And they say their goal is to become the most respected operator of boutique hotels in Texas
but the Cowboys say Texas is the perfect place to give it a go.
both grew up in Paris—the one across the pond
not the one in northeast Texas—with French fathers and American mothers
and French citizens and met while attending the Wharton School of business at the University of Pennsylvania
After graduating (Petrich in 2015 and Dusserre in 2017)
they stayed in touch and traveled together regularly. Eventually Petrich landed in Austin
working for a company that leased apartments and turned them into hotel suites
who’d been working in London for WeWork
came for a visit that included a dip in a swimming hole in Wimberley and barbecue at the Salt Lick.
“I was expecting Texas to be flat and barren
‘This place is so much nicer than I expected.’ There are hills and rivers and lakes,” Dusserre says
“On day three I was ready to move to Austin.”
and they started looking for property to buy a few months later
In March 2021 he and Petrich incorporated Wilder Ways
(They later added the vacation-rental business
which they call French Cowboys Management.) Hospitality investors in Texas
were too heavily focused on urban hotels and vacation rentals
Petrich would often take a train to Normandy to spend a few days at the beach
He wanted to create similar rural escapes for Texans
“Not much was being invested in the periphery
the drive-to destinations in Texas,” Petrich says
“That’s something it felt like Texas was missing
but the infrastructure was not built in a way that took advantage of that.”
That Texans are unaware of the charms of Hill Country towns may be debatable
banking on the concept that residents of Austin and San Antonio in particular wanted to stay at hip properties with some cool histories behind them that were located not far from home
They began to discover an array of mom-and-pop hotels that had been passed from one generation to the next but rarely updated
In February 2021 they bought their first property, the Mountain View Lodge, on five acres in Wimberley, known for its cypress-lined river and downtown shops and restaurants. They made basic improvements to the hilltop hotel, retiling showers and installing terrazzo vanities, plus adding colorful rugs and cow skulls. They renamed the hotel the Bygone and began promoting the hilltop destination
which has a gleaming oval swimming pool and a nature trail featuring a dinosaur track
and we drove back and forth [between Austin and Wimberley] for a year until we built a team and understood what it took to run a hotel.”
They quickly learned that housekeeping is hard work—and it’s the backbone of the hospitality industry
“If you clean a room in the dead of summer
you’ll have a whole new appreciation for it,” Petrich says.
The 47-room facility includes a beach volleyball court
They’ve since added Canyon Lake Cabins & Event Center
and vacation rentals in Dripping Springs and along the Llano River
revenue at some of the under-the-radar lodges increased by 50 percent
which grew from a former stagecoach stop along Cypress Creek
They purchased the town’s old post office building and 27 acres across the creek from the Meyer
“Not everybody at first was open,” Petrich says
“We were two people coming into a town that does not want to become Fredericksburg
It took us a while to convince them we’re not here to turn this into the Marriott
The last thing we want to do is remove the charm.” To that end
they kept many of the Meyer’s antique furnishings
adding a small corner bar to the main lobby
and sprucing up the pool area with new recliners
As you might expect, the French developers have gotten a mixed reception in the communities where they work. Jeanine Leeder, who owns the Ingenhuett on High
an event venue and former general store on Comfort’s High Street
describes the pair as “little millennial types with an agenda.”
“It’s not a typical Hill Country situation where people have ties to the area,” Leeder says
“They’re bringing in outside investors
and it’s a learning curve for them.” But she gives the Cowboys a bit of a hat tip
adding that they’ve kept the characters of the hotels they’ve acquired intact and never tried to turn them into things that didn’t fit their towns’ personalities
“People like to come to Comfort because it’s legitimately Texas,” Leeder says
“Comfort’s going to be ‘all that’ one day
But we don’t want to be Fredericksburg
The biggest thing to me is they aren’t making changes that will make Comfort something we don’t want it to be.”
The Cowboys are doing a good job of “keeping Comfort Comfort,” says Leeder’s daughter
who runs the town’s Alamo Meat Market with her husband
“Whenever anyone comes into Comfort from the outside
everyone wants to know who they are and questions them,” Carlton says
“But I think it’s good to have a different perspective.”
“We’re different here,” Petrich says
“We talk a little differently; we dress a little differently
We have a different eye because we didn’t grow up here
Maybe some will say we’re not Texans
but imitation is the biggest form of flattery
but we’re playing with true admiration for what Texas is.”
Local 902’s new community engagement officer Brooklyn Petrich recently gathered her Department of Health (MDH) colleagues with an agency partner to benefit some Minneapolis residents they serve
“I coordinate mutual aid events for our local which benefit Minnesotans impacted by our work
Many of us are interested in harm reduction so we partnered with Southside Harm Reduction Services in south Minneapolis,” Petrich said
She and her fellow volunteers work in MDH’s infectious disease division
The nonprofit operates a syringe service program and provides safer drug use supplies
The MAPE members worked with the street outreach and volunteer team to go into the community to clean up syringes and other drug use paraphernalia and other trash
Southside Harm Reduction Services staff guide the cleanup
They provide education and all the gear necessary to do the work safely
so it was a great experience to go into the community
We enjoyed learning from them about the day-to-day realities they face,” Petrich added
what the organizations who serve the same communities as we do see in their day-to-day work.”
Petrich said learning more about these organizations is easy
“Volunteering can be a great way to stay connected to the ‘on-the-ground work’ happening in our state
Other locals can do the same thing with groups in their geographic area and these kinds of activities can strengthen our relationships with the community and with one another.”
