Three companies have launched the construction of one of the largest solar parks in Bulgaria - Sveti Georgi - on the site of the former Silistra airport. Bulgaria's Solarpro Holding and China's CMC Europe were selected as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) partners, while another Bulgarian company, Green Solar Energy
including step-up and nodal substations and 110kV power lines required for the grid connection of the project
The construction phase of the solar park is expected to create 200 new jobs
The entire thing was started by Rezolv Energy
That company acquired the rights to build and operate a 225 MW solar power plant
The former Silistra airport was chosen as the site with an area of 165 hectares hosting nearly 400,000 solar panels
The park is scheduled to be ready by mid-2025
With an average annual electricity production of more than 310 gigawatt hours (GWh)
Sveti Georgi will be one of the largest solar parks in Bulgaria once it is commissioned
It also represents the largest foreign investment in the Bulgarian renewable energy sector to date
This month it was revealed that Rezolv Energy has secured €90 million in credit financing for the solar park
The loan is provided by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Raiffeisen Bank International
it was revealed that Rezolv Energy had entered into a solar Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) with European sustainable glass packaging manufacturer Ardagh Glass Packaging-Europe (AGP-Europe)
The VPPA ensures that some of the output of Rezolv Energy's 229 MW Sveti Georgi solar project will provide renewable electricity to Ardagh's production operations across Europe starting in April 2026
The solar virtual energy agreement is one of the first of its kind signed in Bulgaria
It aims to supply 110 GWh per year of renewable electricity to AGP-Europe over a period of 12 years
The VPPA is a financial contract used to secure renewable energy without the physical transmission of electricity

Bulgaria has culled about 130,000 pigs on large commercial farms in the country over recent weeks
According to recent reports by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE)
Bulgaria has reported more than 30 outbreaks across 10 regions since early July
The 6 large farms with populations of over 1,000 animals had to be depopulated
Amid fears, a state of emergency has been confirmed in several districts as Bulgaria’s entire pig herd of 616,000 (2017 figures
Press agency Reuters reported that in a move to contain its spread, 20km sanitary zones have been set up around all registered industrial pig farms
with authorities ordering the culling of home-raised pigs by the Food Safety Agency in these zones
The news agency added that the move is causing unrest with protest rallies being held in several parts of southern Bulgaria as hundreds of pig keepers resist the orders
arguing that there had been no outbreaks in their regions
The deadline for culling in the area has now been extended from 2 to 11 August. The Bulgarian pig industry
called for a nationwide state of emergency

The company plans to start building the 227 MW PV facility by the end of this year
It will sell power to unspecified clients under power purchase agreements
UK-based Rezolv Energy has acquired a 227 MW solar project in Bulgaria from YGY Industries JSC for an undisclosed sum
it will be the largest solar plant in Bulgaria,” the renewable energy developer said in a statement
“The plant will be connected to the main 110 kV transmission grid via two independent connection lines totaling about 6 kilometers in length
The power will be sold to commercial and industrial users through long-term power purchase agreements.”
It has said it aims to “provide subsidy-free clean energy at a long-term
stable price for commercial and industrial users
and other off-takers” in central and southeastern Europe
In October 2022, Bulgaria‘s electricity system operator revealed that it had accepted applications to build new renewable energy projects with an aggregate installed capacity of more than 24 GW – double the country's installed generating capacity
According to SolarPower Europe (SPE), Bulgaria reached 1.5 GW of cumulative installed PV capacity at the end of 2022. SPE says the country could hit 3.8 GW by 2024
Momentum will be mainly supported by unsubsidized large-scale solar projects built under power purchase agreements

Renewables developer Rezolv Energy was established in August 2020
a global investor in sustainable infrastructure
The Prague-based company is focused on investments in Central and South Eastern Europe
Rezolv has just passed important milestones in photovoltaic projects set to become the largest in Bulgaria and Romania
while the latter would also currently have the highest capacity in Europe
In July, Rezolv Energy said that it acquired the rights for the St. George project in Silistra municipality in northeastern Bulgaria
Now it also obtained approval for the business plan as well as the license from the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission
The plan is to install 229 MW for an average annual output of 313 GWh
The 165-hectare site is on the decommissioned Silistra airport
George is scheduled for commissioning in the second quarter of 2025
The project is “financially viable and the owner has the necessary financing capabilities to complete it
The company expects construction to begin in the coming months and the commissioning in the second quarter of 2025
Rezolv revealed that it intends to sell power to commercial and industrial users via long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs)
“These are exciting times in Bulgaria

but the energy transition is now well underway
Solar capacity increased by more than 80% last year
and corporate demand for clean power is developing just as quickly
George will take the transition to the next level,” Chief Executive Officer Alastair Hammond said
Rezolv added that it has well over 2 GW of clean energy capacity being prepared for construction
The location of the Dama Solar facility is in Arad
On its website, the company said the capacity would be 1.04 GW. Rezolv pointed out that it has more than 1 GW of wind power under construction in Romania
compared to the 600 MW investment called Dunarea East and West
Consisting of two parts and developed in partnership with Low Carbon
it is located in the communes of Adamclisi and Deleni near Constanța

The surface waters of the Danube River froze completely on Saturday near the port of Silistra
the first time in 20 years that Europe's busiest waterway froze in Bulgaria
The Danube was last totally sealed by ice in Bulgaria in the winter of 1984-1985
Complete freezing with no water movement whatsoever was observed Saturday along 11 kilometers (6.9 miles) of the river near the northeastern port of Silistra
while ice chunks gripped between 40 and 90 percent of Bulgaria's 450-kilometer stretch
"We expect the total freeze to spread upstream from Silistra to a larger part of the river during the day," it added
which serves as a border between Bulgaria and Romania
has been banned since Wednesday with ships sheltered from the ice in ports and river channels
Two ferry lines across the river to Romania -- at Vidin and Oryahovo -- were the only vessels allowed to operate at their captains' discretion
but they have also been docked since Wednesday
Bulgaria does not have any icebreakers equipped to work on the Danube
The freeze had already forced other countries along the 2,860-kilometer (1,780-mile) river

I believe that united we have the great opportunity to successfully drive our European development
The Municipality of Ruse consistently works to improve the quality of services and the living environment
Many of our innovations are thanks to successfully implemented European projects
I am convinced that if we jointly and integratedly look for application opportunities in the next program period as well
we would have even greater success for the entire region
We see that the problems of one municipality actually turn out to be problems of all
we can bring the issues of the North to the fore before the state and find the right solutions"
said the mayor of Ruse municipality Pencho Milkov

A 70-year-old man has been detained in Silistra after hitting a 33-year-old woman on a pedestrian crossing
His drug test has returned a positive result for benzodiazepine
at 08:36 on "Macedonia" Boulevard in the city
Although there is currently no evidence of serious injuries
the woman has been admitted to the Silistra General Hospital for observation as a preventive measure
A blood sample was taken from the man for additional analysis and he was detained for up to 24 hours
Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in the case and all circumstances surrounding the incident are being clarified
Many think collecting is a hobby for rich or famous people who collect artwork
But the truth is that not every collector needs a lot of money
Most often collections have sentimental value and consists of favorite items that people started collecting when they were children
Valuable exhibits in a child's collection can be glass beads
But some discover the passion of collecting certain items when they grow up
The possibilities for choosing what to collect are endless – beer cans
An interesting and popular hobby around the world is collecting cigarette packets
Dimitar Georgiev form Silistra is one of these people
His collection includes nearly 700 packets of Bulgarian cigarettes produced in the period 1904-1989
produced by the “Dimitar Mardas” tobacco factory in Plovdiv
keeping in mind the fact that Dimitar has been engaged in this hobby for just six years
"It all started by accident while browsing one of the trading sites
I saw some old packs of cigarettes and I was curious because I had never seen them before
The first box was from a factory in Plovdiv that produced ‘President’ cigarettes
The packet is unopened with the cigarettes still in it
They were manufactured at the Tyutyundzhiyan Tobacco Factory
The Garabedyan – Tyutyundzhiyan family was one of the first
but then bought gasoline cutters and gradually became one of the largest cigarette manufacturers in the city in the 1920s and 1930s."
Some of the packets that are valuable for Dimitar are anniversary editions or ones produced for important occasions
Among them are congresses of the Bulgarian Communist Party
Dimitar admits that he is still looking for a packet of cigarettes on the occasion of the flight of the first Bulgarian cosmonaut Georgi Ivanov back in 1979:
“I have interesting packets dating before 1944
as well as cigarettes aimed at helping people quit smoking,” the collector says and adds he also has packets decorated with caricatures
but most often the drawings are related to the advertising of the brand
packets of cigarettes advertising Bulgarian cities
have also been produced and they can also be seen in Dimitar’s collection
Collecting is a passion that broadens knowledge about the world
enriches life and makes it even more interesting
Collector Dimitar Georgiev has even been thinking of opening a museum
they are both financial and purely historical
