The skies were cloudy but the young stars of the sport shined bright
Tsubaki Miki (JPN) avenged her big final loss from the PGS race on Thursday to win her second world championship title
On the men’s side junior world champion Tervel Zamfirov (BUL) shocked the world on his way to his first senior-level victory and world championship title
Tervel Zamfirov marched through the field to the top of the podium to claim the 2025 PSL world championship
The 20-year-old had never reached a podium on a senior level let alone a victory
His first comes in the form of one of the sport’s highest prizes
“I am beyond happy and grateful to reach my first podium at this level
I am so grateful,”– Zamfirov said.Arvid Auner

© Miha Matavz/FISThe young Bulgarian had never finished better than fourth on the World Cup circuit
finishing 12th in the PGS earlier this week
He already took home gold in the PGS and PSL of the FIS Junior Snowboard World Championships earlier this month
He also took gold in the mixed team event at the junior world championships alongside his sister Malena
The two will team up again for the mixed team event on Sunday
It was a tough fight in the big final as Zamfirov took down the 2025 PSL crystal globe winner Arvid Auner by 0.4 seconds
Auner was in strong form all day but could not close out the Bulgarian
Auner wins his second-straight silver PSL world championships medal
Rounding out the podium was Aaron March (ITA) who won the small final by 0.04 seconds in a photo finish
It is the second career world championship for March who won the 2023 mixed team event with Nadya Ochner (ITA)
Andreas Prommegger (AUT) settled for fourth
He was the defending world champion in the PSL event

Daniele Bagozza (ITA) and Alexander Payer (AUT) were disqualified in qualification
Dario Caviezel (SUI) suffered a DNF in the first round
On the women’s side it was a rematch of the big final from the PGS world championship bout on Thursday
The mighty Ester Ledecka (CZE) carved her path to the big final once again against the young Tsubaki Miki (JPN) who dominated the world cup season
In the PGS Ledecka sped to the win but the script was flipped Saturday
Ledecka suffered an early fall in the big final allowing Miki to seemingly cruise to the win
Miki had a nervy stumble near the end allowing Ledecka to charge back but it was too little too late as Miki claimed the win
I had a crash in the last part but I never gave up
I have no words,”– Miki said.It is the second world championship gold for Miki after she won the PGS in 2023
She adds to her three crystal globes and four victories this season in the World Cup as her career season ends on a high note
The 21-year-old has plenty time to add to her crowded trophy case
Ledecka’s silver medal is her fifth FIS snowboard world championship medal
She also won the downhill bronze from the Alpine skiing world championships this season
It was a great performance from the Olympic champion as Ledecka messed up a tun during her first qualifying run only to bounce back for a fast time in her second
Ledecka will not compete in the mixed team event on Sunday
Michelle Dekker (NED) captured her first career world championship medal in her 12th start
The Dutch snowboarder won the small final over Aleksandra Krol-Walas (POL) in a photo finish
Krol-Walas knocked out Ramona Theresia Hofmeister (GER) in the first round
Hofmeister had qualified with the second fastest time but faced a tough draw
It will be a world championship to forget for the German after an incredible strong finish to the World Cup season
Defending PSL world champion Julie Zogg (SUI) finished fifth
Ladina Caviezel (SUI) did not qualify for the final rounds
She was second at the last PSL world championships
Sabine Payer (AUT) was shocked in the first round by Zuzana Maderova (CZE)
Payer was third at the previous PSL championships

Brest Bretagne Handball head coach Raphaëlle Tervel only started her new job two months ago
but her enthusiasm and passion for the role and the club shines through already
“It’s cool to be back as a head coach and to be able to work with Sandrine Mariot
who I was already working with in Besançon
But it’s also great just to see my players evolving as a team and making progress every day,” says Tervel
While she won the EHF Champions League twice as a player – with Györi Audi ETO KC in 2013 and 2014 – the former left wing had yet to lead a team in the competition
She had a stint last season as an assistant at Györ
but being at the wheel in such big games is definitely something different
“You know only the best belong here and that every weekend
you are going to find solutions against the best coaches in the world
It was challenging as a player but it is equally as hard as a coach
playing this competition makes you better as a player but it also makes you better as a coach,” says the 45-year-old
One example she gives to illustrate what kind of progress she is currently making is how big her staff is in Brest
While she was used to work with four or five players in Besançon
Raphaëlle Tervel is now at the head of a 10-person strong team
“It’s great to have so much information available
it is useful to prepare the players better
I still have to work out how to handle all of this physical data
Brest have not had all the time needed to prepare this summer
due to several players being busy at the Olympics
The French side has beaten Vipers Kristiansand
Buducnost and Team Esbjerg in the first three rounds
before heading to Ludwigsburg for this weekend’s Match of the Week (Sunday 6 October
“I would still say we are a work in progress
more time to know each other,” says Tervel
before adding: “It’s great to be able to beat Vipers and Esbjerg still being a little bit uncertain about the way we play

Raphaëlle Tervel knows that the danger can come from anywhere
the first rocks on the road might happen anytime
all our players are fit and we win the games
But I know that there will be defeats this year
that there will be tough times and that how strong we are will be defined by our ability to bounce back.”
But even though there might be some tougher times ahead this season
Raphaëlle Tervel does not want to focus on that
I see that the girls are really happy together as a team and I really want that to remain
I focused on having fun when I was a player and I want to do the same thing as a coach.”
And if having signed some handball superstars
in her team might have placed Brest among the favourites for the EHF Champions League title over the summer
Tervel knows things are not going to be that easy
Only time and hard work will guide us to the top,” she concludes

Tervel Zamfirov spoke a few days after his great success at the World Championships in the men's parallel slalom
It was held in the Swiss resort of Engadin
and the briefing organized by the Bulgarian Ski Federation was also attended by his sister Malena
who won a title and 2 silver medals at the youth world championships and came in second place in the World Cup start
coach Anatoly Zamfirov and the leadership of the national ski federation
Tervel Zamfirov is having his most successful season
having already won 3 world titles and the youth championships in Zakopane
because I'm leaving the youth division and without a time machine - I won't be able to compete
I won every significant world championship - the one for students in January
Then I represented the Bulgarian youth at the youth world championship
Just a few days ago I also participated in the men's world championship
Then I achieved something that I didn't believe I would do at that age
I will remember this season for the rest of my life
the competitors in the World Cup have always supported me and expressed love
I lost to Andreas Promeger 3 times this year
An exceptional athlete - the Nightmare of Bulgarian snowboarding
I managed to sit at the same table with them and I hope to work with them as a friend and teammate in the future
We all represent snowboarding to the world
The World Cup has gathered the best competitors
There are 5 generations in the juniors and someone always becomes a champion
But the world champion in giant slalom is 44
since everyone always leaves as a loser except for one"
Malena Zamfirova announced the big news that she received an Olympic personal quota
although she had only competed in the girls' category until a few months ago:
I have been training skiing and snowboarding since I was very young
but my competitive experience so far was only in children's competitions
I started in Germany and no one even looked at me because I was the last
My goal was to earn 50 points to participate in Bansko
I'm already 16th and I already have an Olympic personal quota
Coach Anatoly Zamfirov and father of the competitors said that the hard work has been going on for many years and the Zamfirovs are developed in a number of sports
they have been exposed to various activities
They never go out with the thought that they have to win
We ride with all our heart and soul without thinking that we will fall
This season showed that we often left with medals
We are a young team and we don't have many things that the big teams have
Malena after 6 hours on the trails - prepares her boards for 3 hours
but he has been doing it since he was 12 years old
Every year there are 15 starts every 2-3 weeks
if you become a world champion - you will be in the next 2 years
Only the Olympic medal is above Tervel's success
we collect points for the globe and the Olympic Games
The Czechs play unfairly - an “alien” competes for them
Anatoly Zamfirov also criticized the state and its attitude towards young people
He gave an example of how in the USA you can get into a university with sports: “It is no coincidence that they take stupider tennis players
because they have other qualities and become good managers
The issues should be considered by the Council of Ministers”
The Chairman of the Bulgarian Ski Federation Tseko Minev was also present and congratulated the snowboarders
“I am glad to see you on such a joyful occasion
We have been waiting for a long time to have a champion in winter sports
What happened is a reward for the work of the team and the competitors
we are now ahead of Austria and Switzerland
Japan and the Czech Republic have one medal more
To fight with such countries - I think it is really something that we should appreciate
We have almost agreed on the Snowboarding World Cup in Bansko
Let's hope that we will go to the Olympic Games with a full team - that is the goal," he said

Tervel Leubomir Boyanov is just 22 but he is one of the young hopefuls of Bulgarian science
He has been nominated for the prestigious TOYP (The Outstanding Young Persons) of Bulgaria
He graduated school long before other people his age
and went on to become the youngest student ever at the University of Mining and Geology in Sofia
Tervel Leubomir is someone who follows his dreams and who does his best to make them come true
Before biotechnologies became part of his life
he discovered the infinite world of quantum physics and started concentrating on ways the human race can acquire a powerful quantum computer
In 2017 relatively few people had even heard of quantum computing
and even fewer had anything to do with this sphere
Terrvel Technologies is the first startup in Bulgaria for quantum computing
he says in an interview with the BNR’s Hristo Botev channel:
“A quantum computer capable of doing something useful does not exist yet but that does not mean we shouldn’t be working in this direction to develop new technologies
My startup deals exclusively with biotechnologies that have already been developed and can be used to develop different products
My dream is connected with quantum technologies – to contribute to their development – on a world scale and here
I would like to see more than one functioning quantum computer in this country in the coming years
I have chosen to stay in Bulgaria because it is the country of our birth and because it is a good thing to evolve right here.” Tervel Leubomir actually graduated secondary school as a private student
Every year he would sit for all compulsory exams
taking the exams for the last two years in just one
Thus he graduated a year earlier than the other pupils his age
and he says it is a rare thing for children in Bulgaria to study in the way he himself did:
I have always known many professors at universities
I have endeavoured to take part in university initiatives
I had access because of my mother who lectures at the St
Sofia and so I was able to get to meet all professors from all spheres at the university
and also at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences – I have met many scientists through the years
I have always loved minerals and I have been interested in the subjects taught at the University of Mining and Geology in Sofia
It is a university that is not restricted to narrow specialization
With his education and his work in biotechnologies Tervel Leubomir says he admires living nature
He donated his most valuable specimen to the National Museum of Natural history with the idea that when he tells young people about it they will develop an interest and go and visit the museum:“Young people tend to copy one another and when they see another young person doing something they too will want to see or do something similar
They will go to a given museum because I have posted a photograph showing I have been there
I have made a donation or I have taken part in some kind of initiative.”

Erik Kynard celebrates after winning the silver medal in the men's high jump final at the Olympic Games London 2012 on Aug
Erik Kynard has never celebrated his silver medal from the Olympic Games London 2012
Tervel Dlagnev never had an Olympic medal to celebrate
Now they are getting the recognition they always knew they deserved
Kynard is officially the gold medalist in the men’s high jump while Dlagnev is a freestyle wrestling bronze medalist in the 120 kg
the emotions are drained from it,” said Dlagnev
at the time I was pretty hurt.” Both Kynard
have known since 2019 that medals could be reallocated based on doping disqualifications
bureaucracy and the pandemic slowed down the process
The International Olympic Committee Executive Board made the decision earlier this month
“I think the issue of drugs in sports is something that existed obviously before my career in Olympic sports
and it probably will exist after,” Kynard said
“I just hope that one day they find some system of due process that can actually reward properly athletes who are cheated and there’s some type of reparations besides just saying nine years later
Kynard leaped 2.33 meters while Ivan Ukhov of Russia went 2.38 to beat him
Now Kynard is the gold medalist without leaving the ground
Ukhov was banned in 2019 by the Court of Arbitration for Sport based on his country’s state-sponsored doping program
He was retroactively disqualified from the London Olympics
Artur Taymazov of Uzbekistan was stripped of his 2012 wrestling gold
The International Olympic Committee said he tested positive for a banned steroid when his sample was retested using more modern lab technology
Taymazov had previously forfeited his 2008 gold medal for the same reason
but retained his gold in 2004 and silver in 2000
“The frustrating thing was everyone knew this guy was doping,” said Dlagnev
very good vitamins’ and then they’d kind of laugh.” When Dlagnev began hearing rumors in 2019 that a bronze medal was a possibility
He had come to terms with his fifth-place finish
“I beat Taymasov the year before in 2011 (at the world champiionships)
so I was planning on winning the Olympics anyway,” Dlagnev said
And then this many years later you hear about it
There’s a little bit of frustration in it as far as
‘That’s kind of scummy that he got away with it and it took this long,’ but I also appreciate the fact that they hunted it down and made it right.”
She previously moved up to the bronze medal at the Olympic Games Beijing 2008
Tervel Dlagnev competes against Komeil Ghasemi (Iran) in the men's freestyle 120 kg
Neither Kynard nor Dlagnev knows how or when they will receive their new medals. Dlagnev, a two-time world championships bronze medalist and Pan American Games champion, said he has been told he has options: he could have a medal ceremony at the next Olympic Games, receive the medal in the IOC office in Switzerland, or coordinate with USA Wrestling to be honored at a domestic event
Maybe I’ll do it at a home dual at Nebraska,” said Dlagnev
who is a volunteer coach with the Cornhuskers’ wrestling team
“I don’t want to travel to Europe for decade-old medal.” His wife Kirsten has some ideas
“She says we’re going to make me a podium and play the national anthem for me,” he said
but she’s all pumped up.” Kynard said he has not been told about his options
but has already been in contact with USA Track & Field and the U.S
Olympic and Paralympic Committee about receiving the difference in prize money between a gold and silver medalist
While all athletes concerned are supposed to return their medals and diplomas for reallocation
those medals will not necessarily be passed down the line. Kynard would be happier with a medal that did not have any fingerprints on it
“I don’t know what the one he had has been through,” he said
Neither athlete believes his life will change with the upgrade in Olympic results.

Bulgaria’s football champion Ludogorets defeated CSKA Moscow by 5-1
This means the Bulgarian team is off to a flying start in this year’s Europa League group stage

Sergey Kovalev’s start in a new weight class got off to an inauspicious start.
In a clinical, if fairly uneventful, outing, Kovalev, the former longtime light heavyweight titlist from Russia, jabbed his way to a wide decision over Bulgaria’s Tervel Pulev in their 10-round cruiserweight main event of a Triller Fight Club card at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California.
All three judges scored the bout for Kovalev on scorecards that read 98-92, 98-92, and 97-93.
There were no knockdowns in a fight that Kovalev controlled from the opening round. Using primarily his jab, Kovalev outworked Pulev, causing the latter’s face to puff up. Still, Pulev, the naturally bigger fighter, was able to land power shots every now and again that dissuaded Kovalev from opening up and using his right hand.
The fight marked Kovalev’s debut at the cruiserweight (200 lbs) limit, but it was abundantly clear throughout the fight that the Russian’s best days are behind him. Once regarded as a ferocious knockout artist at 175, Kovalev now relies on his jab to win him rounds. This was, moreover, Kovalev’s first fight since his punishing 11th-round knockout loss at the hands of Canelo Alvarez in November 2019.
Even Kovalev, 39, admitted he did not look his best against the ham-handed Pulev, and suggested he needed to fight more frequently in order to look like his usual self.
“After a long rest, it was a little harder than usual,” Kovalev said. “But I’m back. I’m okay. I’m gonna keep [in] shape after this fight. Rest one week and then be back in the boxing gym. Next fight will be much more [better]. I promise you.”
“I worried about how I was going to be in this fight,” Kovalev continued. “Pro boxing at a high level. More than one year, this is very big rest. My body don’t like this. I want to fight every three, four months.”
Kovalev, who weighed in at 196 1/2 pounds, also stated that he feels like he needs to come in lighter in his next fight in order to regain some of his former quickness.
“The plan was to use the jab and long distance,” Kovalev said. “But I felt my body [had an] additional 10 pounds. I need to lose five, six pounds [for my next fight].”
Kovalev improves to 35-4-1, with 29 knockouts; Pulev drops to 16-1, with 13 KOs.
A desperate Pulev tried to land something big in the 10th and final round. He landed a right that threw Kovalev’s head back. Kovalev countered with a left hook. Moments later Pulev landed a right hand that seemed to cause Kovalev to touch the canvas, but the referee called it a slip.
Kovalev regained his footing in the ninth round, pressing the action against Pulev and mixing in more right hands to the body.
Kovalev dominated most of the eighth round, courtesy of his jab, but faltered towards the end. Pulev connected on a right hand that seemed to hurt a visibly fatigued Kovalev.
In the seventh round, Pulev threw an elbow that landed across Kovalev’s cheek, staggering the Russian Kovalev momentarily. Kovalev continued to work his jab effectively but he took more punishment from Pulev this round than in the previous ones.
Kovalev and Pulev opened up a bit more in the sixth. Kovalev had the better of the exchanges. Referee Raul Caiz Jr. briefly halted the fight because Kovalev’s shoes needed to be re-tied. Kovalev continued to land his jab, which opened up a cut under the right eye of Pulev.
In the fifth round, Kovalev continued to stick the jab in Pulev’s face, while throwing the occasional right to the body. Pulev managed to land a solid two-punch combination but otherwise landed mostly cuffing blows on the inside.
Kovalev boxed Pulev in the fourth round. Pulev could not avoid Kovalev’s jabs, and swelling began to form under his right eye as well. Pulev got in a right hand over one of Kovalev’s jabs.
Kovalev began landing some bigger punches in the third round. A right hand midway through caught Pulev’s attention. Kovalev followed up with a pair of hooks. Noticeable swelling began to form under Pulev’s left eye. Both exchanged hard hooks and right hands.
In the second round, Kovalev repeatedly beat Pulev to the punch. A right lead landed clean for Pulev. Kovalev varied his punches, shooting his right hand down to the body. A left hook from Kovalev pushed Pulev back on his heels. Pulev’s lone moment of success in the round occurred when he countered with a left hook of his own that momentarily threw Kovalev off his balance. Kovalev bested Pulev in the final 30 seconds, landing several clean, unanswered punches.
Pulev came out aggressive in the opening round but landed nothing of note. Eventually, Kovalev was able to keep Pulev at bay with his jab and keep the fight at his preferred distance.

The former 175lbs champion had moved up a weight class and took on Bulgarian Tervel Pulev over the course of a 10-round fight in California
He won by unanimous decision by a clear margin: 98-92
Kovalev was largely in control against the bigger man and he had to be on his guard for powerful shots
and the 39-year-old former champion boxed conservatively
The performance was far from the best that the veteran put in at a lower weight
and the passage of time may have robbed him of his knockout blow - his last fight was in November 2019 when he was soundly beaten by Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez
it was a little harder than usual,” Kovalev acknowledged
I’m gonna keep [in] shape after this fight
Rest one week and then be back in the boxing gym
“I worried about how I was going to be in this fight

— Tervel Dlagnev dropped into a wrestling stance Thursday night and began to shuffle his feet and felt a strange and scary bolt of pain racing through his back and into his legs
The Olympic hopes for one of USA Wrestling’s top medal hopefuls nearly ended inside an Iowa City sauna
I wasn’t even thinking about performance,” the two-time World heavyweight bronze medalist said
“I was thinking about my future and playing with my boys and being a dad and a husband.”
Dlagnev asked his coaches whether competing Saturday in the Olympic Trials was worth the pain and the possible long-term consequences
They told him to hang it up if he got scared
The pain stayed away just long enough for Dlagnev to secure his second trip to the Olympics

He said he hasn’t felt 100 percent since the 2014 World Championships
He maintained his spot on top of the American ladder last year but had to bow out of the World Championships due to injury

Jesse.Spenser Mango left his shoes on the mat Saturday as a farewell symbol after a remarkable career atop USA Wrestling’s lightest Greco-Roman weight class

they’re loud as hell,” the 23-year-old Wisconsin native said
and this is one of the only places in the world that I can experience that
Thielke called himself “a man obsessed” and said his sacrifices with weight management and training had him “thinking a different way that I’d ever thought before.”
“I’m trying to take over the world,” he said

As the main event holder Pulev, 36, outworked and outboxed American cruiserweight DeShon Webster (12-3-2, 6 KOs) to a landslide unanimous decision (118-110, 120-108, and 120-108) in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, this past Saturday night. Pulev fought around Europe (mostly in Germany) and got three fights overseas. He is 15-0, 12 KOs, but not rated.
On the undercard, Romanian heavyweight Bogdan Dinu (19-2, 15 KOs) bounced back with a stoppage following back-to-back kayo losses to Jarrell Miller and Kubrat Pulev. Dinu, 33, halted South African veteran Osborne Machimana (23-14-2, 17 KOs) in four.
Light heavyweight Spas Genov loves to fight and he is successful when he does, which doesn’t come often. Genov scored his twelfth win by decisioning Georgian import Levan Shonia (15-18, 11 KOs) over eight. Scores were: 79-73, 79-73, and 79-74 – for Genov, who is now 12-0, 8 KOs, in a pro career dating back to 2008. Shonia is 1-13 since 2013.
Also, in a stunner that wasn’t a stunner at all, unheralded trialhorse Borislav Zankov (12-27-1, 5 KOs) stopped 47-year old veteran Konstantin “KoKo Tyson” Semerdjiev (34-19-2, 21 KOs) in two. Semerdjiev just cannot stop doing it, fighting sporadically into his 27th year as a pro. His biggest win was a decision over future European and WBA light heavyweight champion Bruno Girard in 1993, when both were novices.
John Wirt and Ivaylo Gotzev organized the event.

Olympic wrestler Tervel Dlagnev (atop Russia's Eduard Bazrov during a June match in New York City)
will arrive in London as one of the Games' more improbable stories
"[The Olympics] was not even dreamed about before," says Dlagnev's mother
and it's so amazing."The Dlagnev File—CLEVELAND
disrespectful and on the verge of flunking out of his Texas high school
His parents let him make most of his own decisions
which was their way of letting him experience the freedoms they didn't have before fleeing then-communist Bulgaria
Teachers called home all the time to complain about his behavior
Tervel Dlagnev will march in the Opening Ceremonies of the XXX Olympiad in London
and the final product almost never is what you expect
the shared view is of a transformation that continues to amaze his friends
is among the United States' best hopes for a wrestling gold medal
freestyle heavyweight champion and a 2009 world bronze medalist with an impressive international wrestling resume
He's also a caring man and doting husband who makes the cliche' "gentle giant" seem too harsh
"It's like something unbelievable
[The Olympics] was not even dreamed about before
That's why it is so out of the blue."
he will do so seated in front of a television
either at a veterans' shelter in Utah
where the family last knew of his whereabouts
Tervel has not spoken to his father for four years
during which Tervel graduated from college
got married and got serious about becoming an Olympic champion
The estrangement does not weigh heavily on Tervel Dlagnev
"I am an American wrestler," Dlagnev says proudly
In a sport where career paths usually seem determined long before entering high school
Dlagnev never considered wrestling an option
Going out for the wrestling team as a high-school sophomore living in suburban Dallas was intended to be nothing more than a way to lose weight
Dlagnev is powerfully built with a V-shaped upper body and tree-trunk thighs
He looks the part of a heavyweight wrestler born in Eastern Europe
quiet tone when talking about his family and friends
Dlagnev loves nothing better than to sink into his big
brown corner couch and watch "Slumdog Millionaire" because the love story gets him every time
and it draws from a lot of different emotional pools," he says
reclining on the couch and surrounded by his -- not Kirsten's -- stuffed animal collection
the favorite of which is a pillowy pink pig he's had since college
Smiling at this scene as he barges in through a sliding glass door is Tervel's teammate at the Ohio Regional Training Center
who lives with Tervel and Kirsten in a three-bedroom condo in northern Columbus
"I'm the Dupree in this relationship," Bergman says
Me and Dupree" about a dependent third wheel
"Except Dupree was much more responsible
Tervel and Kirsten basically adopted a 26-year-old."
Bergman has a unique perspective on Dlagnev
"He's one of the best husbands I've seen in action
and he's going to make an incredible dad," he says
"If I could pick anybody for one of my sisters to marry
he's married to a great woman already
He's a kind-hearted gentleman who loves the sport of wrestling."
One of Dlagnev's core religious beliefs is that the husband is the leader of the household
Despite being an overwhelming physical presence
that does not translate into a dominant relationship at home
where his former college sweetheart recently quit her job as a nanny to devote more time to Tervel and Bergman
She cooks healthy meals and helps them focus on training [Bergman did not make the Olympic team]
"I feel like he pays a lot of attention and he really cares about knowing
Are there any areas I'm lacking as a husband?'" Kirsten says
This is what you get.' He constantly wants to get better
but he makes sure I feel loved and taken care of
Dlagnev's approach to almost everything is fueled by an insatiable desire to get better
That's why he comes home from practices so exhausted he can barely stand and says to Kirsten
"I'm excited to go back tomorrow." Like most great athletes
he has realized that it's one thing to be coached
"No one wants to hear what they're doing wrong
but that's an area of my life where I feel God has really humbled and softened to where I don't mind constructive criticism if it can make be better," he says
"I love learning and improving and [being a husband] is one of the most important areas of my life where I need to improve
"It's one thing to be disciplined
it's another thing to delighting in and seeking discipline that you know will improve you
I feel like I delight in my discipline in my wrestling
I'm not loving being in the middle of a treadmill sprint
I seek that effort and that delight."
Bergman says he's never seen someone revel so much in the daily grind of grueling workouts
He has a lot more fun going to wrestling practice day in and day out than anyone
He's just drenched in the sport," Bergman says
there's little doubt where Dlagnev got that
Igrena often worked two jobs to support the family
and she worked her way up from a janitor at a dialysis center to a technician to a supervisor who oversees the equipment
Tervel describes his father as being an alcoholic and manic-depressive man who jumped on get-rich-quick schemes and was obsessed with money
"My dad especially had this vision of coming here to live the American dream
but he didn't want to put forth the effort
He thought the American dream was given to you," he says
She kept her head down and put the work in
She's at the opposite end of that spectrum."
Igrena declined to talk about Tervel's father
other than to say she thinks he may have left the country
"It's not [tough without him]," Tervel says
"I've had some interesting things happen in my life
'How are you not messed up?' I'm kind of indifferent about it
We didn't have that good a relationship growing up
I don't really have that urge to want to talk to him as much
but it's not anything I think about."
Dlagnev says his father was an atheist and the family didn't attend a church
Some high school teammates called him out for his constant swearing
He also became a better student because he realized
after placing at the Texas state tournament as an inexperienced junior
He brought home nearly all A's as a senior
Dlagnev says he met more teammates who were devout Christians
Dlagnev and his mother both said he was fortunate to wrestle on high school and college teams with strong coaches who fostered family atmospheres
"That's why I feel through wrestling
"That path he put me on to join the wrestling team and the wrestling community was the community that introduced me to God."
Dlagnev quickly rose through the collegiate and national ranks
He won NCAA Division II national titles in 2007 and 2008
He trained for a year at Northern Iowa and moved to Columbus in 2009 to train at the Ohio Regional Training Center with coach Lou Rosselli and world team member Tommy Rowlands
The ORTC pays an annual stipend of about $22,000
an issue he had with obsessive-compulsive disorder became much worse
Dlagnev says he was never diagnosed and never sought medical treatment
but his symptoms were becoming more severe
He had tics and routines he would repeat dozens of times "until they felt right." Whether it was thrusting a hand upward every time he touched his face
or practicing a down-block wrestling maneuver
or performing an exaggerated sprawl on the bed at night
he would do those things over and over to the point of exhaustion or even injury
A chiropractor told him the sprawling was damaging his spine
I didn't want to warm up for my national tournament
I had so many tics that I would exhaust myself
I was rational enough to know this is not helping
but I had such a discomfort if I didn't do it," he says
He realized OCD and wrestling are counterintuitive
There's no time to dwell on a move until it "feels right." Every mistake and every successful move must quickly be forgotten as the match flows between a subtle chess match and a sudden flurry of attacks and counters
at a highly regarded New York Athletic Club international tournament after college
Dlagnev wrestled 2008 Olympian Steve Mocco
and Dlagnev decided to abandon all his routines and tics for one match
but Dlagnev had the match of his life to that point and won
"It proved you could perform without it," he says
Dlagnev says he has rid himself of the tics through determination and prayer
Kirsten says he has virtually no symptoms now
though Bergman says he still notices them from time to time
tricks and no tics won't win him a gold medal in London
But word out of Russia recently is that 6-7
gold-medal favorite Bilyal Makhov also had a great trials
Dlagnev is 0-1 in his career against Makhov
a result Dlagnev dismisses because it was at a dual meet in Russia
He is 2-2 against another strong contender
Dlagnev also has wins over Mongolian standout Chuluunbat Jargalsaikhan
two-time Olympic champion Artur Taymazov of Uzbekistan
2008 Olympic bronze medalist Marid Mutalimov of Kazakhstan and two-time world bronze medalist Ioannis Arzoumanidis of Greece
has won just one wrestling gold medal in each of the last two Olympics
and team leaders quietly are hoping Dlagnev will help increase that total (world champ Jordan Burroughs is favored at 163 pounds)
hasn't had a heavyweight champ since Bruce Baumgartner in 1992
The charismatic Burroughs is the face of the U.S
held in high regard by his coaches and teammates
Bergman thinks Dlagnev could be a break-out star at the Olympics
"but I think his character and how he is

So you don’t think that every point and every second in a wrestling match matters
Of all the NCAA championships ever wrestled
the 2008 Division II tournament was likely the closest
Minnesota State-Mankato fell a mere half a second shy of potentially winning the title over Nebraska-Kearney.
Two future superstars factored heavily into Kearney's win: Three-time World/Olympic medalist Tervel Dlagnev and UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.
The Lopers clung to a half-point lead (100.5-100) over the Mavericks with Mankato sending three to the finals and Kearney sending two
The Lopers struck first with Brett Allgood winning the title at 133 pounds after Maverick Nick Smith fell
The Mavericks fired back with wins from Jason Rhoten (157 pounds) and Andy Pickar (165 pounds)
Pickar won his match 8-2 and had Hudson Harrison (Mercyhurst) on his back for one and a half seconds as time expired
Another half-second meant two additional points
which meant a bonus point for the Mavericks
Mankato didn't get the major decision so it only picked up four points for the title instead of five with a major decision.
The team title came down to the best heavyweight in the country (all divisions) winning his finals match against Central Oklahoma’s Dustin Finn
Tervel Dlagnev needed a win for Nebraska-Kearney to earn its first team title in program history
Pickar’s almost major decision in the finals could have won the title for Mankato
The Mavericks would have been up by 4.5 points
which would have forced Dlagnev to secure a major decision or better
but the pressure would have been squarely on his shoulders to deliver
A half-point team title means that every win or loss from either side ultimately contributed to the final outcome
but there are key moments that stand out.
Nebraska-Kearney— Ryan Etherton (149) picked up a major decision and two falls in consolation on his way to placing third.— Joe Ellenberger (157) lost in the first round then won five straight matches
a 10-8 sudden victory win in the consolation semis
— Kamaru Usman (174) won 7-5 in sudden victory in the quarterfinals and 3-2 during his third-place match
— Paul Sutton (184) went 1-2 but his lone victory was a major decision
— Brett Allgood (133) defeated Mankato’s John Putnam in the semifinals
— John Putnam (133) lost to Raymond Dunning
in tiebreakers and lost his third-place match
2012 Olympic bronze medalistThe 2008 Nebraska-Kearney team title is one of my most cherished memories in the sport of wrestling
Everyone dreams of the opportunity to be the finisher
Grab that last-second catch in the end zone
It’s something I will never forget and it was the best moment of my college career
Tervel Dlagnev celebrates his title-clinching win at the 2008 NCAA Championships
head coach for the 2008 UNK teamWinning the school’s first national championship was hard for us to believe in 2008 because we weren’t favored to win
so we knew if we had a strong tournament there was a chance.
It wasn’t until the consolation quarterfinals that we knew we had a chance
We punched four wrestlers into the consolation finals
pulling out two huge upsets that secured a team trophy with eight All-Americans and two national finalists.
We were highly favored in both finals matches with returning national champions Brett Allgood (133) and Tervel Dlagnev (285)
we had to wait and watch as Mankato had to win their matches to determine both teams’ fate
Tervel got the victory and we won the team title by half a point.
Our 184-pounder was the only wrestler who wasn’t an All-American
but he won a match that scored us one point
Everyone contributed to that national championship
They were dedicated and committed to putting the work in
Each of them brought something different to the team but they always found a way to pull together and support each other
Minnesota State-Mankato head coachWe were ahead by 3.5 points going into the last 30 seconds of that heavyweight match
You drive down the highway every once in a while and you think about it
I'm really proud of the effort that the team put together
There were a couple of weeks afterward where no matter what anybody said it wasn't the right thing.
I remember thinking that if Dustin Finn could pull this thing off he was going to be flown up to Mankato
and that guy was going to be taken care of for a weekend
I had a moleskin notebook keeping the scores.
As soon as (Tervel) got that takedown I didn't know what I wanted to do
I came back to the hotel room and my family was all there
I cried a little bit and then we had a big party afterward
All these people had unconditional love.
I think our guys understand the bigger picture.
