Paleontologists have described a new genus and species of long-snouted notosuchian from the fragmentary remains found in Brazil’s Adamantina Formation
Epoidesuchus tavaresae is a new species of Peirosauridae from the Cretaceous Adamantina Formation
Epoidesuchus tavaresae inhabited the ancient supercontinent Gondwana during the Late Cretaceous epoch
The ancient reptile was approximately 4 m (13 feet) in length
nearly tubular snout and possibly a semiaquatic lifestyle
It belongs to Peirosauridae, a Gondwanan family of crocodylomorphs within the suborder Notosuchia
“Notosuchia is a remarkably diverse group of extinct crocodyliforms
particularly in Cretaceous deposits of Gondwana
with more than 80 species described to date,” said lead author Dr
Juan Ruiz of FEIS-UNESP and his colleagues
“Such taxonomic richness is also reflected in an unexpected ecological diversity
including completely terrestrial and semi-aquatic forms
the occupation of many different ecological niches.”
“The notosuchian fossil record is mostly restricted to the Cretaceous of Gondwanan landmasses
but it was in the Late Cretaceous of South America that the group achieved its peak in diversity.”
Peirosauridae was originally described in 1982
“Despite the description of several species of peirosaurids during the past 25 years and advances in the knowledge of the morphological and unique traits of the group
peirosaurids have been largely excluded from broader phylogenetic studies,” they said
the researchers examined a fragmentary skull and one postcranial element of Epoidesuchus tavaresae
The fossils were found in 2011 in an outcrop of the Adamantina Formation (Bauru Group) at the municipality of Catanduva
“Our results provide additional evidence for the presence of Peirosauridae comprising two lineages: the oreinirostrine Peirosaurinae and the longirostrine Pepesuchinae,” the scientists said
the results of our morphospace analysis indicate that peirosaurids were ecomorphologically diverse
with species exhibiting either a more putative terrestrial ecology or more semi-aquatic habits
and with a great range of morphospace occupation
including spaces not explored by other notosuchians or neosuchians.”
“Pepesuchinae was widespread in Africa and South America during the Cretaceous,” they noted
“This lineage is notable among notosuchians by possessing longer rostra
similar to generalist living crocodilians such Crocodylus and some caimans.”
“Pepesuchines are recorded from formations where semiaquatic neosuchians are absent or rare.”
Stolokrosuchus co-occurred with Sarcosuchus
while in the great pole of diversity of pepesuchines
only one putative neosuchian was described to date and there is no other record of large
predatory tetrapods with semiaquatic habits.”
we suggest that pepesuchines were occupying vacant freshwater systems of Western Gondwana during the Late Cretaceous.”

Paleontologists have identified a new species of the extinct frog genus Baurubatrachus from fossils found in the state of São Paulo
Life reconstruction of Baurubatrachus santosdoroi
Baurubatrachus is an extinct genus of prehistoric frogs in the suborder Neobatrachia of the superfamily Hyloidea
These amphibians lived in what is now Brazil during the Maastrichtian age of the Late Cretaceous epoch
They coexisted with ancient snails
lived a few million years earlier than Baurubatrachus pricei
Its fossilized remains were recovered from layers referred to the Adamantina Formation cropping out near Catanduva city in the Brazilian state of São Paulo
one of which bears a set of peculiar characteristics
that allows us to assign them to the already known genus Baurubatrachus,” the paleontologists said
“The detailed study of the peculiar anatomy of these specimens provides new osteological features for the genus
such as the presence of a subtympanic foramen
as well as new character states for other traits to be considered in future systematic studies.”
Baurubatrachus santosdoroi is the first formally named frog species from the Cretaceous of São Paulo
“The discovery of this new species from the Brazilian Cretaceous helps us refine our regional paleontological knowledge and paleoecological interactions,” they said
“It provides data for future studies on neobatrachians and for a better understanding of the evolution of this group of frogs
The discovery of Baurubatrachus santosdoroi is reported in a paper published in the September 2022 issue of the journal Ameghiniana

A giant sauropod dinosaur that lived 85.2 million years ago (Cretaceous period) in what is now Brazil had an aggressive case of osteomyelitis in its leg and soft-bodied parasitical microorganisms in its vascular canals
Life reconstruction of the titanosaur from the Upper Cretaceous Adamantina Formation in São Paulo backcountry
The animal was reconstructed based on associated saltasaurid specimens in the area
“The occurrence of osteomyelitis in dinosaurs is rare
but recent studies have corroborated the occurrence of this form of bone inflammation in Sauropodomorpha,” said lead author Dr
Tito Aureliano and his colleagues from the University of Campinas
the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte
“Evidence of fossil endoparasites of vertebrates has already been found in coprolites and invertebrate vectors preserved in amber.”
fossil parasites preserved directly in vertebrate tissues were unknown until the present date.”
the researchers looked at the 85.2-million-year-old fragmentary fibula of a titanosaur from Brazil’s Adamantina Formation
They used CT scanning to create a 3D model of the full fossil
They also examined the specimen with petrographic and non-filtered optical microscopes
Ulcerations reconstructed based on pathologies in the 85.2-million-year-old titanosaurs fibula
They identified tens of fossil parasites preserved inside the specimen’s vascular canals — the first clear example of a parasite preserved inside fossilized bone tissue
The dinosaur fibula also showed acute osteomyelitis with elliptical ulcerations
Bone inflammation was either caused by the referred parasites or facilitated its infestation
“Our research documents for the first time the detailed histological description of severe bone inflammation and the exceptional preservation of soft-bodied parasitical microorganisms inside the vascular canals of a non-avian dinosaur,” the scientists said
“The results bring new insights into the fields of parasitology

Paleontologists have unearthed the exquisitely preserved remains of Cretaceous enantiornithine bird in São Paulo state
The extraordinary three-dimensional preservation of its skull allowed the researchers to digitally reconstruct the bird’s brain
An artist’s impression of Navaornis hestiae
The newly-identified enantiornithine species lived in what is now Brazil
approximately 80 million years ago (Late Cretaceous epoch)
the ancient bird was roughly the size of a starling
The species had a larger cerebrum than Archaeopteryx
suggesting it had more advanced cognitive capabilities than the earliest bird-like dinosaurs
suggesting that it hadn’t yet evolved the complex flight control mechanisms of modern birds
“The brain structure of Navaornis hestiae is almost exactly intermediate between Archaeopteryx and modern birds — it was one of these moments in which the missing piece fits absolutely perfectly,” said Dr
a researcher at the University of Cambridge
The fossilized remains of Navaornis hestiae were recovered in 2016 from William’s Quarry at the locality of Presidente Prudente
part of the Adamantina Formation in Brazil
the site was likely a dry area with slow-flowing creeks
which enabled the fossil’s exquisite preservation
The extraordinary three-dimensional preservation allowed the paleontologists to use advanced micro-CT scanning technology to reconstruct the bird’s toothless and large-eyed skull and brain in remarkable detail
The fossilized skeleton of Navaornis hestiae
“This fossil is truly so one-of-a-kind that I was awestruck from the moment I first saw it to the moment I finished assembling all the skull bones and the brain
which lets us fully appreciate the anatomy of this early bird,” Dr
“Modern birds have some of the most advanced cognitive capabilities in the animal kingdom
comparable only with mammals,” added University of Cambridge’s Professor Daniel Field
“But scientists have struggled to understand how and when the unique brains and remarkable intelligence of birds evolved — the field has been awaiting the discovery of a fossil exactly like this one.”
While the skull of Navaornis hestiae somewhat resembles that of a small pigeon at first glance
closer inspection reveals that it is not a modern bird at all but instead a member of
Enantiornithine birds diverged from modern birds more than 130 million years ago
but had complex feathers and were likely competent flyers like modern birds
the brain anatomy of Navaornis hestiae poses a new question: how did enantiornithines control their flight without the full suite of brain features observed in living birds
which is a living bird’s spatial control center
“This fossil represents a species at the midpoint along the evolutionary journey of bird cognition,” Professor Field said
“Its cognitive abilities may have given Navaornis hestiae an advantage when it came to finding food or shelter
and it may have been capable of elaborate mating displays or other complex social behavior.”
“This discovery shows that some of the birds flying over the heads of dinosaurs already had a fully modern skull geometry more than 80 million years ago,” said Dr
a researcher at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County
The discovery is reported in a paper in the journal Nature

Braze brings Brazilian BBQ to your backyard
Gabriel Garcia Lopes got his first taste of the barbecue business
working at a kabob place in his hometown of Adamantina
he’s bringing authentic Brazilian barbecue to Madison with his catering company Braze
That’s where my love of grilling comes from,” says Lopes
a graduate of Madison East High School and the Madison College culinary program
The 24-year-old chef started Braze earlier this year
He exclusively uses a 15-skewer rotisserie grill — imported from Brazil — when catering events
It’s a revolving grill with the skewers set at an angle
Lopes grills the traditional Brazilian beef cut known as picanha
chicken thighs seasoned with herbs and artisan sausage that he makes himself from locally sourced pork
asparagus and other local vegetables from Vitruvian Farms in McFarland
“If you want something different we can do chicken hearts
What defines Brazilian barbecue is an emphasis on the flavor of the meat itself
“The meat should be really good and tasty,” explains Lopes
That’s why we mainly use hardwood chips from fruit trees.”
Engaging with the chef as he’s grilling and serving meat right off the skewer is all part of the authentic Brazilian barbecue experience
“It’s not just serving food; it’s kind of like a show
People are watching the meat being grilled
taking pictures and having a good time,” says Lopes
You just keep eating and eating and eating
You never get bored at a Brazilian barbecue.”
He currently works as a chef at UW-Madison’s Union South
But he sees the catering gigs he’s doing now as a stepping stone to one day opening up his own 30-seat restaurant

Lifetime’s Sins of the Preacher’s Wife really sinks its teeth into conversations about motherhood
Although the Lifetime movie isn’t too challenging in its conventional style
Anna Marie Dobbins and Vanessa Angel play the central roles of Beth and Marion
The characters and their central conceits are well-written and brought to the screen in an easily digestible way
There are no apparent surprises along the way
except the explosive ending that changes the complexion of the film
we have decoded Sins of the Preacher’s Wife’s Ending and have also written an analysis of Sins of the Preacher’s Wife’s Plot Summary
have moved to a small town with their newborn
Their plush house is detached from the city
What compounds her misery is a nagging feeling she can’t shrug off that someone’s watching her
Dan seems to think it is just the stress of moving to a new place
He unusually demands that Beth and her family leave the town as it is not good for them
drives by and explains to Beth that he knows Boyd
He uncharacteristically asks Beth to “not create trouble for the littlest of matters” and does not do anything
She has an argument with Dan about the earlier scuffle
They’ve already moved three times before this because of problems she has had with the other places
Dan convinces Beth to go to therapy for her increasingly alarming panic attacks
She was put on medication by her parents in her early teens for the same problem
Beth sees a painting of trees and the meadow
This reminds her of a shocking image we saw earlier in the film
whom Beth knew committed suicide by overdosing on pills
Some lady saves her life as Beth almost walks in front of a car
She tells her about the fairytale of Adamantina while padding Beth’s injuries
Adamantina went to the market to sell her sister’s homespun thread but instead traded it for a beautiful doll she wanted
and it grants them several months’ wishes and changed their lives
someone is seen following her in a blue truck
He dismisses her claims and asks her to call the police
which is interrupted by noises of movement in the house
we see a strange man’s reflection inside the house
But they don’t find anything outside
Beth confides in Marion about adopting Anna since she couldn’t conceive on her own
Beth surprises Dan with a visit to the Church
He gives a rousing mass about what going to church means to him
She is Beth’s friend who died in the woods
it gets really disturbing because there are feelings of guilt
Beth confesses that she didn’t do anything to save Cassie’s life
They had been friends since childhood and were inseparable in anything they did
But her behavior started to change as they got older
but Cassie called her out of the blue for a camping trip
Beth didn’t go after her that evening and regrets for not doing it
She believes Beth is full of life but pretends to be weak because she is afraid that those who love her will be disappointed
She encourages Beth to let go of Cassie’s guilt
Both couples grow closer to each other in the next few weeks
Beth’s anxiousness also gradually fades
and she gets back into her creative flair for painting
Almost all of her paintings revolve around the woods
Marion picks up Beth from her house and takes her to the woods
She must face her fears and confront them to overcome her struggles
Marion also reveals that God didn’t bless her and Jim with a child
Ever since that day in the woods with Marion
Marion became unusually interested in Anna
almost suggesting she helped Beth get over her issues just to isolate her further from Anna
Marion tries to get into Beth’s computer when she isn’t home
Marion slips out of the window and stands at the front door
pretending to have come there just at the right moment
She asks Dan not to trust Jim and says that he has taken something from a friend of hers
We catch Jim slipping something into Dan’s drink
He disconnects the baby monitor and carefully approaches Anna
Marion stands in the shadows downstairs and calls Tim
accusing Dan and Beth of endangering Anna’s life
She even speculates that drugs are involved
It is highly likely that Jim planted the drugs in their bathroom in the scene before this
she becomes convinced Jim got Dan drunk on purpose
She revisits her time with Marion and comes to the haunting conclusion that it was Anna she wanted this whole time
Beth leaves immediately to track Marion and Jim down at the abandoned shack she visited with Marion
It is also revealed that Boyd has been involved in their plan to run away from this place
He is supposed to bring the tithing money from the church to the abandoned shack
We see him following Beth into the woods and convincing himself to kill her for his family
Marion rationalizes their actions to Jim by once again laying down that the string takes what they want
The irony is that Marion is the real preacher in the family
Boyd is actually Marion and Jim’s son
Not their biological offspring but someone they kidnapped
The sheriff arrives at the house and finds oxycontin in the bathroom
He immediately accuses Dan of dealing drugs and arrests him
He realizes what is going on and starts to animatedly accuse Marion
The officers get ahold of him and aren’t convinced by his accusations
we see Marion dying Boyd’s hair and convincing him that his name isn’t Tristan but Boyd
It seems like Boyd has moments of lucidity like he did when he tried to warn Beth at the grocery store
He has one in the present day as well and runs off
He calls the Sheriff’s office and hides
Tim is informed and takes the officers to Boyd’s location
Beth arrives at the shack and tries convincing Jim to return Anna
She explains that her own mother was a self-consumed artist like Beth and couldn’t find time for her
That trauma is the cause of her actions in the present day
The ladies start fighting with one another
Boyd stops her and is stabbed in the process
The police arrive and take her into custody
we see Dan and Beth have moved again to a town called Willowvale
