Portugal: Cimpor has presented its decarbonisation plan during a visit from the Portuguese Minister of Economy
The plan involves a €360m investment across Cimpor’s Alhandra
Souselas and Loulé plants to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050
Current projects at the Alhandra plant include a €110m investment in alternative fuels and two €35m investments in a replacement mill and new clinker cooler
The company estimates a CO₂ emissions reduction of 190,000t/yr and a 16GWh energy saving
Similar initiatives are underway at the Souselas plant
such as the conversion of a kiln to produce calcined clays
which could reportedly cut 70,000t/yr of CO₂
said “We are committed to investing in Portugal for the environment
I would like to emphasise that the government´s infrastructure investments
particularly for the environment and sustainability
and we trust in the minister’s support on prioritising this matter
I am confident that together we will continue to build a cement sector that Portugal can be proud of.”
The main projects include replacing fossil fuels with fuels derived from waste and renewable gases and increasing the energy efficiency of facilities
The plan also includes increasing the production and storage of energy from renewable sources and investing in the production of low-carbon cements using calcined clays
CIMPOR received a visit from the Minister of Economy
at the Alhandra Production Centre to present the company's strategic decarbonisation plan for the country
which represents a total of €360 million to be invested in the Alhandra
aims to achieve carbon neutrality for CIMPOR by 2050
which will place the historic Portuguese company at the forefront of the environmentally sustainable transition and make it a technological benchmark in the cement sector
given its turnover and strategic importance
is the production unit that is currently at the most advanced level of implementation of this plan
Among the projects underway is the investment in replacing fossil fuels with fuels derived from waste and hydrogen (an investment of €110M)
the installation of heat recovery mechanisms
electricity production units using renewable energies and energy storage systems
There are also plans to replace one of the mills with a more energy-efficient one and also to replace the clinker cooler
which contributes to better heat recovery and greater thermal efficiency (both with an investment of €35m)
CIMPOR will be able to reduce its emissions by around 190 000 t of CO2 per year and save 16 GWh of energy annually while increasing its self-consumption production from renewable sources to 84 GWh of energy per year
CIMPOR centres in the rest of the country have also made their way towards carbon neutrality
the company is investing in the conversion of a kiln to produce calcined clays
a material with a lower carbon footprint that can partially replace clinker in cement production
allowing for a reduction of up to 70 000 t of CO2 per year
the Group's strategic plan includes an investment in Sacopor's new production line
which aims to increase production capacity and improve operational efficiency
This project is crucial to ensuring the continued supply of innovative and sustainable products in line with the growing demands of the market
the Minister of Economy was welcomed by Suat Çalbiyik
Chairman of the Board of Directors of CIMPOR Global Holdings
who emphasised the importance of this investment for the national economy and for alignment with the government's goals of carbon neutrality and technological innovation
"This investment represents a milestone in our journey towards innovation and carbon neutrality
By modernising our operations and implementing advanced technologies
we are contributing not only to CIMPOR's competitiveness
Our partnership with the government and other entities is key to achieving decarbonisation goals and ensuring a more efficient and sustainable industrial sector," comments Adrianno Arantes

support and incentives particularly for the environment and sustainability need to gain further momentum and we trust in your support on prioritising this matter
I am confident that together we will continue to build a cement sector that Portugal can be proud of"
CEO of CIMPOR for Portugal and Cape Verde to the Portuguese Minister of Economy
"CIMPOR is one of our best companies in Portugal and carries with it a giant legacy
building a true brand of Portugal over 130 years
We are closely following its strategy and prioritising the sector
which has shown a great capacity to evolve and adapt to current challenges
Foreign investment in Portugal is very welcome and we want to continue to encourage it
exports and internationalisation are the key to our economy," stressed Economy Minister Pedro Reis
is crucial for the country's re-industrialisation and is among the top priorities of our economic policy," he added
Openness to partnerships with other agents of change has therefore been one of the pillars of CIMPOR's leadership
An example of this is CIMPOR's project in collaboration with Vodafone to create a 5G Standalone network
which was recently inaugurated at the Alhandra plant
This network makes it possible to monitor its processes in real time
optimise predictive maintenance and reduce its environmental footprint

Pro Laura Siddall digs into a professional weekend of racing you might have otherwise missed
there’s plenty more racing before the end of the year
But this weekend we focus on another hot-and-humid race, and one of the most brutal on the circuit – Ironman Malaysia – and then the World Triathlon Para Cup
with athletes getting a last tune up before the series final
considered one of the toughest events on the circuit
Temperatures and humidity are much higher than the lava fields of Kona
plus there are literally monkeys lining the route at times
creating “no-food zones” for the athletes racing
a stunning island and a real experience to race there
Regan Hollioake (AUS) in her first year as a pro
and Ironman Malaysia was her fifth full distance for the year
Hollioake took fourth at Ironman New Zealand in her pro debut over the distance
who then followed it up with a win at Ironman Australia
it was a win at Challenge Gunsan a month later
Hollioake led from the gun and never looked back
having given herself a lead of over 19 minutes by the start of the run
She is certainly a talent over the full distance
after two years away from full-distance racing
A post shared by Regan Hollioake (@rlhollioake)
Brazilian Fernando Toldi took the victory over some pretty familiar names
A group of four men formed on the bike—Australians Tim van Berkel and Josh Amberger
Toldi and Filipe Azevedo (POR)—they exchanged places and came into T2 together
Berkel and Toldi then battled it out on the run
side by side through 24 kilometers when Toldi started to pull away
who backed up a third place at Ironman Chattanooga just two weeks earlier
so this would be a solid two weeks for the German
A post shared by Fernando Toldi (@fernandotoldi)
Last weekend’s World Triathlon Para Cup took place in Alhandra
so it was a great opportunity for athletes to have a final prep before crossing the border into Spain for the World Triathlon Para Championships final next week in Torremolinos
there were smaller fields in some of the categories
perhaps indicating that post-Paralympics athletes are just focusing on Torremolinos and the final
The biggest names who did race were in the women’s PTS5 category: Paralympic champion Grace Norman (USA) took the win
with Paris bronze medalist Lauren Steadman (GBR) in silver
all three Paralympic medalists are on the start list—Norman
Cashmore has the highest points ranking out of the three
and will be looking to take the overall world champion title come next week
it will be another good match up between these two athletes and friends
Ferreira currently sits fourth (pre Alhandra) in the world rankings
and all three Paris medalists are on the start list—Lauren Parker (AUS)
Gretsch has the highest points ranking so far
as she’s only had two races counting out of her three allowed
so it will likely move her up in the rankings
Although it’s hard to say what form Parker is in
since she’s said she hasn’t really trained since the Paralympics (which was her goal for 2024)
As we are increasingly seeing in the PTVI category
long-course pros are taking up the role of guide for the athletes
and Luke Pollard appearing in the Tokyo Games
Lisa Becharas (USA) guided up and coming youngster Taylor Talbot to third
putting in the fastest bike split on the day
Talbot competed in the Tokyo Paralympics in track and field (400m and 100m events) and then in December 2023 switched over to paratriathlon
there could be an exciting partnership ahead of them – watch this space
A post shared by Taylor Talbot (@taybae610)
The men’s fields were bigger but were missing many of the bigger names
letting some of the up-and-coming athletes take the spoils and podium spots
Hold on tight again as we head into the next two weeks of big racing
We take a quick flyby video tour of the 2024 Ironman World Championship Kona course
