government to early-career scientists and engineers
Nearly 400 researchers received the award this year from President Joe Biden
This year’s awardees are employed or funded by 14 governmental agencies
Mitrofanova’s recognition comes from the National Institutes of Health for her development of mathematical and computational algorithms that address biologically and clinically significant problems
“This award is a tremendous honor,” said Mitrofanova, a research member of the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey
at 21 and decided to change my career from medicine to computer science
This award represents my ‘American Dream’ and is living proof that in the U.S.
you can dream big and achieve it if you put your heart into it.”
“This award is testament to the incredible supportive environment that the School of Health Professions
Rutgers Health and Rutgers as a whole created for scientists like me
Mitrofanova specializes in identifying molecular biomarkers to predict treatment responses in cancer patients
Her work not only identifies patients at risk of developing resistance to treatments but uncovers new therapeutic targets for those who fail traditional therapies
Her lab uses advanced mathematical models to analyze complex molecular interactions rather than relying on single-gene markers
“This approach provides deeper insights into disease progression and uncovers alternative treatment strategies for patients at risk of treatment failure,” Mitrofanova said
For instance, Mitrofanova’s study published last year in Nature Communications introduced computational methods to predict which patients would benefit from a widely used prostate cancer drug
The study also proposed a strategy to extend the drug's effectiveness
Mitrofanova and her team identified why the prostate cancer drug enzalutamide (sold under the brand name Xtandi) fails for some patients and eventually stops working in others
By analyzing advanced prostate cancer patient data
they mapped interactions among molecular pathways and their upstream transcription factors – proteins that regulate multiple genes
Mitrofanova exemplifies the innovation and dedication that drive groundbreaking discoveries at Rutgers Health," said Brian Strom
chancellor of Rutgers Health. "Her pioneering work in computational algorithms and biomedical informatics is not only transforming cancer treatment
but also inspiring the next generation of scientists and clinicians
This well-deserved recognition underscores her remarkable contributions to science and the impact of her research on improving patient outcomes."
Mitrofanova’s lab is now expanding its research to address significant gaps in cancer biology
exploring the role of the non-coding genome in treatment response
these approaches will help more patients receive the treatment they need and create pathways for developing non-traditional cancer therapies
“We hope our work will guide the best therapeutic course for patients before they begin treatment
"Dr. Mitrofanova’s research in using computational algorithms to unravel the mechanisms and inform potential treatments for cancer and other diseases have had a profound impact in the medical field,” said Jeffrey J. DiGiovanni
dean of the Rutgers School of Health Professions
“This recognition is a testament to her exceptional contributions and underscores her remarkable journey as a researcher and valued member of the School of Health Professions at Rutgers.”
The PECASE was established by President Bill Clinton in 1996 to recognize scientists and engineers who show exceptional potential for leadership early in their research careers
The award recognizes innovative and far-reaching developments in science and technology
expands awareness of careers in science and engineering
recognizes the scientific missions of participating agencies
enhances connections between research and impacts on society and highlights the importance of science and technology for our nation’s future

A Russian court on Tuesday convicted four journalists of extremism for working for an anti-corruption group founded by the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny and sentenced them to 5 1/2 years in prison each
accused of working for a group founded by the late Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny

stands in a defendant’s cage of the Nagatinsky District Court in Moscow
Sergey Karelin and Artyom Kriger were found guilty of involvement with a group that had been labeled as extremist
arguing they were being prosecuted for doing their jobs as journalists
The closed-door trial was part of an unrelenting crackdown on dissent that has reached an unprecedented scale after Moscow sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022
The authorities have targeted opposition figures
rights activists and ordinary Russians critical of the Kremlin with prosecution
jailing hundreds and prompting thousands to flee the country
Favorskaya and Kriger worked with SotaVision
an independent Russian news outlet that covers protests and political trials
Gabov is a freelance producer who has worked for multiple organizations
The four journalists were accused of working with Navalny’s Foundation for Fighting Corruption
which was designated as extremist and outlawed in 2021 in a move widely seen as politically motivated
Navalny was President Vladimir Putin’s fiercest and most prominent foe and relentlessly campaigned against official corruption in Russia
Navalny died in February 2024 in an Arctic penal colony while serving a 19-year sentence on a number of charges
which he had rejected as politically driven
Favorskaya said at an earlier court appearance open to the public that she was being prosecuted for a story she did on abuse Navalny faced behind bars
Speaking to reporters from the defendants’ cage before the verdict
she also said she was punished for helping organize Navalny’s funeral
in a closing statement prepared for court that was published by the independent Novaya Gazeta newspaper
said the accusations against him were groundless and the prosecution failed to prove them
there is nothing new in the current situation,” Gabov said in the statement
“Independent journalism is equated to extremism.”
In a statement Karelin prepared for his closing arguments that also was published by Novaya Gazeta
he said he had agreed to do street interviews for Popular Politics
a YouTube channel founded by Navalny’s associates
while trying to provide for his wife and a young child
He stressed that the channel wasn’t outlawed as extremist and had done nothing illegal
“Remorse is considered to be a mitigating circumstance
It’s the criminals who need to have remorse for what they did
for the honest and impartial attitude to journalism
FOR THE LOVE for my family and country,” he wrote in a separate speech for court that also was published by the outlet
in which he emphasized his feelings in capital letters
in a closing statement published by SotaVision
said he was imprisoned and added to the Russian financial intelligence’s registry of extremists and terrorists “only because I have conscientiously carried out my professional duties as an honest
incorruptible and independent journalist for 4 1/2 years.”
sooner or later it will end and those who delivered the sentence will go behind bars,” Kriger said after the verdict
Supporters who gathered in the court building chanted and applauded as the four journalists were led out of the courtroom after the verdict
The journalists’ lawyers said they would appeal the verdict
“The profession of a journalist in itself is not extremism,” said Irina Biryukova
“And based on the case materials that are available
there is no evidence that the guys committed any crimes
She said the four “are holding up” and “were happy that so many people came.”
The Russian human rights group Memorial designated all four as political prisoners
among more than 900 others held in the country
a Moscow-based activist who was arrested in 2022 and is serving a seven-year prison sentence
Mikhail Kriger was convicted of justifying terrorism and inciting hatred over Facebook comments in which he expressed a desire “to hang” Putin
Antonina Shevchenko is done fighting professionally
older sister of UFC women's flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko
announced her decision to hang up the gloves in a lengthy Instagram post Thursday
This decision comes nearly three years after her last UFC outing

Now Antonina Shevchenko has decided to walk away for good
The former UFC Flyweight made the official announcement that she’s stepping away from the octagon for good

it was first announced that Molly McCann and Antonina had been removed from the roster
joining that list of releases was Razak Alhassan as well
and Molly McCann all removed from the UFC active roster
It’s not clear if UFC released Antonina first
or if she gave the company her notice of retirement
it seemed as if the flyweight had made that decision a while back
Antonina is the older sister of current UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion Valentina Shevchenko
She came into the UFC in 2018 through Dana White’s Contender Series
Shevchenk made pro MMA debut in 2002 through KFK: Cup of Kyrgyzstan
She also fought in WXF: X-Impact World Championships and Phoenix FC before making the jump over to the UFC
Her career looked promising early on as Shevchenko got two impressive wins and was riding a solid 7 - 0 MMA record
but her fight against Roxanne Modafferi put her in the loss column
Antonina would trade wins and loses here and there
but she was never one step closer to getting into title contention
Her last fight was a split decision win over Cortney Casey
Antonina has won several performance and fight of the night awards
She finishing off her professional MMA career with a record of 10 wins and 4 losses
and Razak the best in their future endeavors

Russian official defends prison van conditions journalist calls “torturous”SOTAvision reporter Antonina Favorskaya
who documented Alexei Navalny’s final days before being arrested for alleged ties to his organisation
tells Moscow court she contracted pneumonia from “torturous” conditions in prison vehicles
She faces charges of participating in an “extremist community” through her journalistic work
Tverskoy district court in Moscow began hearing a lawsuit against Russia’s Interior Ministry brought by journalist Antonina Favorskaya
who is challenging the “torturous” conditions in which prisoners are transported from detention centres
Favorskaya faces charges related to alleged cooperation with the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK)
the now-banned organisation founded by late opposition leader Alexei Navalny
“The conditions are so torturous that I fell ill twice—once with pneumonia and once with bronchitis,” Favorskaya told the court
She asked the court to order a technical inspection of the Kamaz prisoner transport vehicle to assess whether it properly accommodates the human body. She also requested that other female detainees be called to testify, including nurse Olga Menshikh
Citing documents from the Interior Ministry
Favorskaya said each detainee is allocated just 23 centimetres
that someone’s backside is supposed to fit into that.”
Favorskaya also pointed out that on two occasions she was transported in the same compartment as murder suspects
she be transported to court in the personal vehicle of the head of the Centre “E”
Russia’s notorious anti-extremism police unit
compared the isolation unit inside the transport vehicle (a small enclosure known as stakan
or “the glass”) to the dimensions of a coffin
She asked the court to accept into evidence a drawing by Favorskaya titled Kamaz-Gazenwagen
Favorskaya explained that the vehicle has no seatbelts or handrails
which means detainees are thrown from side to side during any movement
there is a bar that prevents them from resting their backs properly
“They’re calling this a gazenwagen,” said Isaev
“In the lead-up to the 80th anniversary of WWII Victory Day
Isaev also disputed the claim that each seat measures just 23 centimetres
he compared this with an economy-class seat on a plane
it’s actually more comfortable than sitting in a plane seat.”
Isaev also opposed the idea of summoning other female detainees from Pre-Trial Detention Centre No
“Every individual will experience discomfort—that’s a given
[I’ve been in the transport vehicle myself]—it’s entirely tolerable
The court will continue hearing this lawsuit on April 29
in a letter from pre-trial detention cited by her outlet SotaVision
Favorskaya revealed that authorities have accused her of “helping to organise Alexei Navalny’s funeral” as part of the case against her
“The clowns who have charged me for my reporting from Kovrov
prosecuting me (I quote) ‘for helping to organise Alexei Navalny’s funeral.’ Only those who are very afraid and know only how to take revenge could reach such surrealism,” she wrote
Favorskaya has been in custody since March 29
the journalist was involved in “collecting material
producing and editing videos and publications for the FBK.” At one of her detention hearings
Favorskaya stated that she was being prosecuted “for an article about how the Federal Penitentiary Service tortured Alexei Navalny.”
Three other journalists—Artem Krieger of SotaVision as well as Konstantin Gabov and Sergei Karelin
Reuters and the Associated Press—have been charged in the same case of participating in an extremist community through alleged FBK connections
Their hearings are being held behind closed doors

Russia celebrated the Press Day on January 13
authorities happily congratulate media representatives on their professional holiday
and participates in a real crime against freedom and journalism
this state replaced freedom of speech with 'information security,' and independent media with mouthpieces of state propaganda
which shamelessly spread hatred and hostility
on Russian Press Day - the Day of Censored
At least today in Russian prisons, there are 26 journalists who continued to work within the country despite the high risk of ending up in detention
Among these 26 people is Antonina Favorskaya
whose work has become an example of fearlessness
from the case of Ilya Yashin to the persecution of Alexei Navalny
She ended up behind bars after visiting the grave of Navalny
The Russian authorities accused her of “participating in an extremist community” for posts allegedly made on FBK platforms
Antonina continues to speak the truth and give people hope:
“The darkness that is happening now is not forever
We will definitely see the country that Alexei dreamed of
and people will stop going to prison for not wanting war or for working as a journalist,” said the journalist at one of the court sessions
Antonina faces up to 6 years in prison for her professional activities
On the same unfounded charges, journalists Konstantin Gabov and Sergey Karelin are currently in a pre-trial detention center. They are held in the "Matrosskaya Tishina" detention center in Moscow under harsh conditions: overcrowded cells
They are awaiting a verdict in a politically motivated case
fully aware that in this system their guilt was determined even before the trial began
Among those who ended up behind bars is also journalist Nina Novak from Chita
The court sentenced her to four years in a penal colony for collaborating with the publication "Sibir.Realii," which the authorities declared an "undesirable organization." This is the first case of applying such an article
becoming another tool for suppressing independent journalism
who worked in local media and engaged in cultural projects
considers Nina's contacts with her colleagues sufficient reason to spend 4 years in a colony
Maria Ponomarenko, Ivan Safronov, Artem Kriger, Sergey Mikhailov, Irina Danilovich, and other journalists are prisoners of the Russian regime
Their fates are evidence of a crime against freedom of speech
for which the Russian state bears full responsibility
Despite the development of a repressive system
hundreds of journalists remain in Russia to do what they can
Many of them are forced to hide their names and faces
using all possible means to protect themselves and their loved ones
Recently, we went to a small meeting with Norwegian journalists. When asked if there are any journalists left in Russia who speak the truth, my colleague Georgii Chentemirov showed a photo of pediatrician Nadezhda Buyanova, sentenced to 5 years and 6 months in prison under the article on "fakes." Georgii asked his colleagues: “If you think there are no journalists left in Russia
One of the publications that continues to operate in Russia is 'Novaya Gazeta'
which for decades has been a symbol of independent journalism in Russia
even though its editorial office was forced to cease publication in Russia
Some journalists from 'Novaya Gazeta' work from abroad
but even those who remain in the country continue to report on political repression and war
Notably, in Chechnya today, media workers were also congratulated on their professional holiday. In connection with this, several schools in Grozny held 'Conversations about Important Things', where children were told about the importance of media work
teachers do not mention the attack on Elena Milashina
who were brutally beaten and tortured in Grozny in July 2023
They came to cover the trial of Zarema Musaeva
the mother of opposition Chechen activists
The attack was accompanied by death threats and humiliation
The case of the attack on Milashina and Nemov remains unsolved
the investigation seems to be delayed and is being conducted with a blatant reluctance to bring it to a conclusion
After the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine
many editorial offices were forced to leave Russia
The new military censorship made the work of journalists almost impossible
turning any attempt to honestly cover events into a threat to their freedom and lives
We faced unprecedented pressure: the laws on 'fakes' effectively prohibit any viewpoints different from the Ministry of Defense
Publishing materials that do not align with the official position can lead to criminal prosecution
Censorship has become total: independent media websites are blocked, mentions of many organizations and people are banned, and access to information is severely restricted. Independent media are deemed 'undesirable,' putting editorial work at risk. Journalists face criminal cases, persecution, and can even be poisoned
Direct pressure is complemented by harassment from pro-government media and threats from anonymous sources. By the way, recently the TV channel "GTRK-Murmansk" made a story about our editorial office The Barents Observer. Propagandists compared us to Nazis
most of the Barents Observer editorial staff have been subjected to repression in one way or another
Journalist Georgii Chentemirov was recognized by the Ministry of Justice as a "foreign agent," editor Thomas Nilsen can no longer visit Russia as he has been declared "persona non grata," and I have two politically motivated criminal cases against me
The profession of a journalist is dangerous
and talk about minority issues that authorities often do not like to pay attention to
the importance of freedom of speech and media is understood
According to the report by "Reporters Without Borders," by the end of 2023
there were 779 journalists imprisoned worldwide
a record high in the history of observations
547 remained in custody at the beginning of 2024
Repressive dictatorial regimes still exist in many countries where press freedom is systematically suppressed
with more than 100 journalists behind bars
journalists are the main victims of repression during protests
Belarus and Vietnam also lead this anti-ranking as countries where the independent press has been virtually destroyed
“Reporters Without Borders” also note that since the escalation of the war between Israel and Hamas in October 2023
the number of Palestinian journalists in custody has increased to 34
Half of them are held under administrative detention without trial or charges
the situation is even more tragic: during the conflict
it is alleged that the Israeli army killed 76 journalists
16 of whom were performing their professional duties

Four Russian journalists were sentenced to 5.5 years each on “extremism” charges Tuesday over their alleged work with the late Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny’s organizations, the independent news outlet SOTAvision reported
Konstantin Gabov and Sergei Karelin were detained last year on accusations of gathering material and preparing and editing videos for Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) and the NavalnyLIVE YouTube channel
saying they were being prosecuted for their work as journalists
Moscow's Nagatinsky District Court found the journalists guilty of “participating in an extremist community” following a trial that was closed to the public
SOTAvision reported from the courtroom on Tuesday
The court also handed the journalists a three-year ban on administering websites
Prosecutors had earlier requested that the journalists be sentenced to five years and 11 months in prison each
has repeatedly denied the accusations against them
saying neither journalist had ever worked for Navalny’s organizations
had covered Navalny’s court hearings and filmed the last known video of the Kremlin critic before his Feb
He was serving a 19-year prison sentence for “extremism” when he died under unclear circumstances
Favorskaya previously said she was being persecuted for “helping to organize” Navalny’s funeral
was prosecuted for filming street interviews
reportedly worked for Reuters and the Russian television channels Moskva 24 and MIR
as well as the Belarusian news agency Belsat
Russian authorities banned Navalny’s activist and political groups including FBK as “extremist” in 2021
volunteers and supporters at risk of criminal prosecution
In January, three former Navalny lawyers were sentenced to prison for up to five and a half years on the same charges of “participating in extremist activity.”
Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization
criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution

independent journalism in the face of repression
survival is often reserved only for the fittest
as athletes continually face immense pressure to perform and maintain their positions within a highly competitive roster
and sometimes life itself can get in the way
highlighting just how challenging it can be to stay relevant in the sport
Even fighters with recognized names and accomplished backgrounds aren't immune to the consequences of inactivity and inconsistent performances
underscoring the brutal realities of mixed martial arts competition at the highest level
According to Borrachinha Depot on X
sister of current UFC Women's Flyweight Champion Valentina Shevchenko
has been officially removed from the promotion’s active roster
Antonina initially entered the UFC spotlight through Dana White's Contender Series
where she impressed Dana White enough to earn her first UFC contract
Antonina's recent record underscores that she has lost three of her last five bouts
a statistic not overwhelmingly negative by UFC standards
yet reflective of the demanding nature of professional fighting
the core issue with Antonina’s UFC tenure has not been solely about wins and losses
Antonina Shevchenko's most recent fight dates back to July 2022
when she narrowly secured a split-decision victory over Cortney Casey
Shevchenko was dealing with a significant knee injury that initially caused the bout to be postponed
Shevchenko stepped away from competition in 2024 for personal reasons
and there have been reports indicating that she gave birth to a baby boy
These combined factors significantly limited her availability
Shevchenko's release is a stark reminder that in the UFC
maintaining an active presence and consistent performance is crucial—not only for career longevity but also for simple survival within the promotion

The opening night of SONICA 2025 includes three singular artists
builders of captivating and immersive soundscapes that operate at the intersection of electroacoustic and experimental music
Stamor is a new ambient project by Slovenian musician and producer Jan Bajc Funa aka .čunfa
whose debut album The Absurd (self-released
2024) is described as “a homage to Albert Camus and his absurdism”
Bajc has channeled his love for minor-key riffs and ominous metal ambience into The Stamor project
It seems as if instrumental parts usually used as introductions or interludes on a post-metal record represent the essence of his expression
The pensive guitar tones are not followed by blast beats
but rather they are expanded with synthesised bass lines
gothic synths and hypnotic field recordings
His expression is reminiscent of Burzum’s dungeon synth releases
The Stamor project is marked by a sincere desire to grasp the poetics of the absurd
Bajc will be joined on stage by Manuel Brajnik (guitar
