in the northeast of the archipelago: the sea was 3 meters above the current level 10,000 years agoBrazilian Navy
proved highly sensitive to rising sea levels in a survey by scientists from the federal universities of Minas Gerais (UFMG)
If the sea rises 2 meters (m) by the end of the century—a projection considered alarming by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)—it could flood many of the municipalities in the east
Some 500,000 people live in the island’s 18 municipalities
By examining differences in the color and chemical composition of soils on Marajó
one of the researchers involved in the study
found signs of the advancing sea that 10,000 years ago might have been 3 m above the current level
“The beaches on the south of the island have undergone intense marine erosion over the last 40 years
indicating sea levels are rising in the region,” he notes

Surfing in the Brazilian Amazon begins with practitioners in the river
and a clap that starts the challenge: riding the “Pororoca,” one of the most admired and feared waves in the world
The Pororoca
which means “great noise” in the Tupi-Guarani indigenous language
is a phenomenon that occurs twice a year when oceanic waters from the Atlantic meet the currents of the Amazonian rivers during high tide and push them in the opposite direction
a city of 30,000 inhabitants in the state of Maranhao (northeastern Brazil)
the freshwater wave usually manifests itself in March and September
as a brownish avalanche up to four meters high that runs twice a day along the Mearim River
“The Pororoca has a different energy from any other wave
fantastic,” says 29-year-old Ernesto Madeira
who has been surfing in the Amazon for seven years
thousands of surfers from the region and other parts of Brazil come to the Amazonian rivers for this unconventional challenge
many accustomed to surfing waves in open sea
the Pororoca was mythologized by locals as a monster because its passage usually floods low-lying lands adjacent to the river course
Riding it is very different from surfing a sea wave
Its obstacles are also different: from tree trunks or loose branches under the water to unwanted encounters with yacarés (a kind of crocodile) or anacondas
“The adrenaline increases when we are in the water and we hear the wave approaching
we always think about getting out of the water
but it’s already too late,” confesses 40-year-old Teognides Queiroz
while squatting to apply wax to his board before entering the Mearim River
River surfing is practiced as a collective ritual
with practitioners encouraging each other and swimming together on their boards until they find a good spot to wait for the wave
That’s how it is in the Amazon: collective over individualism of traditional surfing
each encouraging the other,” he explains
the Pororoca is also becoming a tourist attraction
Although the waves are not as high as those in the sea
they can last almost an hour until they completely disintegrate
with an average speed of 30 kilometers per hour
it was worth it,” says 18-year-old Carlos Ferreira
happy to have been able to tame the Pororoca a few minutes before
moving forward thanks to his strength in the Mearim
“It’s quite adrenaline-inducing,” explains the young man
while hugging his orange board with green details
“It’s a good feeling in the body

Brazil – The boat to Santa Cruz do Arari leaves Belém
the capital of Pará state in northern Brazil
It is November – dry season – so the river is low
and the boat carrying the UNFPA team can only go as far as the port of Jenipapo
where they drive the rest of the way via dirt road to reach their destination by 2 p.m.
The team is here to visit three municipalities in the Marajó archipelago that are taking part in the Saúde das Manas (“Sisters’ Health”) project
a partnership between UNFPA and the Council of Municipal Health Departments of Pará (Cosems/PA)
Its aim is to strengthen the quality of reproductive health care the local health system provides in COVID-19 times by setting up telemedicine offices at seven health-care clinics (called basic health units in Brazil)
which will provide online consultations with specialists in gynaecology and obstetrics
With the opening of five locations on 12 February
the programme now serves 80,000 women of reproductive age in Santa Cruz do Arari
Easing access to health care
Santa Cruz’s Joint Health Unit has one general practitioner
Before the telemedicine office opened here
patients who required a more specialized consultation had to go to Belém
Other municipalities are more than 24 hours away
women are able to consult with a gynaecologist or obstetrician remotely
nurses provide antenatal care to patients like Lindaura Gemaque
who received antenatal services here but chose to give birth to both of her children in the capital so she could see a specialist
says Saúde das Manas will also help stem rising rates of teenage pregnancy
“Many parents do not talk to their children
who learn from their peers and end up getting pregnant too early,” she said
“That is why it is important to have these [remote] consultations
so that the girls will learn how to take care of themselves.”
The taboo that surrounds talking about reproductive health care
She works with six community health agents who check in on patients at their homes and deliver medicines and contraceptives via bicycles provided by the programme
we ran a campaign to perform preventive exams
We have seen a lot of deaths of women due to cervical cancer,” Ms
“The project is going to be very good because we don’t have a gynaecologist here
and many women stop going to Belém for consultations out of shame or [because] not all of them have the money to pay for the ticket or a place to stay in Belém.”
a five-hour boat ride and two-hour van ride away
According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE)
the city has a population of just over 24,000
20 hospital beds and no specialist doctors
The telemedicine office is installed at Municipal Hospital Dr
was scheduling a virtual appointment. “I have had the results of my preventive exam since 2018
but there haven’t been any doctors to evaluate it,” said Ms
who lost her grandmother and great-grandmother to cervical cancer
“As I’ve had cases of death in the family due to cervical cancer
I rushed to schedule my appointment.”
Because of the success of the other clinics
Cosems/PA is expanding the project to other municipalities
half an hour away from Salvaterra via ferry and the last stop on this visit. Specialized health care for the population has long been the dream of Soure’s health secretary
And now the dream has come to fruition at Família da Matinha Health Unit
“It is very important to have this telemedicine service for the population who find it difficult to get to the state capital and for doctors who have difficulty getting here,” Ms
“The partnership will improve the health of the municipality.”

five community leaders murdered over land dispute involving authorities in North Brazil
according to data from the Brazilian government.A judge
a prosecutor and a substitute city council member are directly involved in land conflicts targeting Cedro e Flexeira territories in the past two years
highlighting how these communities have been neglected by a government that keeps failing in protecting their basic rights
quilombola leader Laudivino Diniz has rarely left home
Two reasons on top of the pandemic explain his isolation: Laudivino has been under house arrest since November 2019
when he and four relatives were arrested for ripping out electric fences placed by buffalo herders on the lands of the Flexeira quilombola community in the state of Maranhão
as it has become the norm in his community
death threats and persecution are frequent
Flexeira is located in Arari city, which in 2020 was among the top in the national ranking of murders in the context of rural conflicts
according to data from the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT)
five quilombolas have been murdered in Arari
Two of them were residents of the Flexeira community and three of the neighboring community of Cedro
All the victims were members of the Forums and Citizenship Networks
a social movement advocating for the rights of traditional communities in Maranhão state
and were fighting against the fencing of the wild fields in the region
The most recent victim was José Francisco Lopes Rodrigues
After being shot by a sniper who was hiding in his residence
Quiqui was hospitalized for five days in Maranhão state capital
Although the shooter has not been identified and the police investigation does not name any suspects
family members and neighbors of Quiqui claim that his murder
as well as the murder of the other four quilombolas
were directly related to a years-long conflict between their communities and local farmers identified as land grabbers
We don’t want more land than what we already have
Public figures in Maranhão state are among those involved in the region’s land conflict
Judge Angela Maria Moraes Salazar and her husband
raise buffaloes on a property that occupies about 100 hectares of land claimed by the quilombolas
Salazar is a State Electoral Court inspector
The influential couple is the author of a series of lawsuits against members of the communities
a quilombola leader who was assassinated in early 2020 in Arari city
After Quiqui’s murder, the CPT released a note denouncing the state of violence
leaders assassinations and attacks on human rights activists in the region: “In 2021 alone
nine people were killed in conflicts over land in the state
This number places Maranhão as the state with the highest number of murders last year.”
Part of the Amazonian area in the northwest of Maranhão state
Arari is formed by areas flooded annually by the Mearim River
Cedro is located on an island of the same name bathed by saltwater and legally it’s a Federal area owned by the Navy
The communities’ livelihood is mainly based on fishing in lakes that
are traditionally used collectively by the surrounding communities but have been occupied by rice producers and buffalo farmers in recent decades
The field fencing and the type of livestock they raise impact the natural resources and the quilomobola’s access to fish
The agribusiness presence in Arari has increased in recent years due to the city’s proximity to two ports under construction.
The Arari floodplains comprise a territory of almost 2 million hectares of public lands that form an Environmental Protection Area
A 1991 state decree creating the protected area establishes the importance of lakes for feeding low-income populations and prevents the “extensive and abusive breeding of buffalo cattle” on the fields
Cedro and Flexeira quilombola communities have been waiting since 2019 for land regularization by the Maranhão Land Institute
Their territories are not certified by the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform nor the Palmares Foundation
a public foundation created to promote and preserve afro-descendant culture in Brazil
As the land conflict has intensified in the region
the communities began to organize themselves to protect their areas by removing electric fences and buffaloes from the fields
in 2014 families no longer had fish to eat,” Laudivino says
He was born and has lived in Flexeira for 46 years
My grandfather was born and died here at the age of 98.” Laudivino says that after reporting the conflict to numerous authorities
they decided to take the animals out on their own
“We don’t have any problem with the pastures
we just don’t accept them putting buffalo and wires in the fields,” he says
Laudivino says the farms’ bodyguards kill the pigs raised by the communities
the state government launched the “Baixada Livre” operation with the aim of inspecting the illegal fences over the Arari fields
The Operation Action Plan stated that the field fencing and the buffaloes breeding caused numerous conflicts “that span decades” and pose a risk to “personal safety
income and food security for communities residing in the region”
the document recognized that farmers appropriated the floodplains of the Baixada Maranhense area and that it is “illegal”
the operation designed to inspect the illegal fences over the Arari fields was not carried out
a legal advisor to the Forums and Citizenship Networks movement in Maranhão state
has represented the communities since 2017
He understands that land ownership regularization in the region is urgent since the fencing of the fields has “suffocated” traditional communities
Lima points out that not only the complaints against land grabbing have been ignored
but there is a criminalization of quilombolas by the local authorities
“The authorities have become enemies of the people,” he states
10 quilombolas were arrested in Arari for participating in collective actions to remove the fences
In addition to Laudivino and his four relatives
five other warrants were served in 2019 against Cedro quilombolas
The charges range from vandalism to gang formation and criminal association
The lawsuit that led to the arrests also demanded the preventive detention of the quilombola’s lawyer himself
Lima also points out the State’s omission in the face of the murders
“Despite great pressure from peasant organizations to investigate the murders as a land conflict
the state government practically ignores it
This is turning a blind eye to the evidence because
before the community organized to remove the fences
The first two murders took place on January 5
and are the only ones whose investigation pointed out to suspects
Juscelino Fernandes Diniz and his son Wanderson de Jesus Rodrigues Fernandes were executed with firearms in the presence of other members of the family
According to the testimony of the quilombolas
the shooters arrived in the community and their homes hooded
wearing Civil Police vests and saying that they were serving an arrest warrant
concluded that the murders were the result of an argument with the farm’s caretakers about raising pigs
Two suspects were recognized by the victims’ families and were charged
but they were not preventively arrested because more than 60 days had elapsed since the crime
Lima and quilombola leaders question the line of the investigation
claiming that the police are trying to separate the crime from the land conflict in the region
reports that the community does not receive information about the progress of the investigation
We don’t know if they have any involvement with the land grabbers
“He was a person who didn’t get into any trouble
his only conflict was the fight for land rights here in the community,” she says
“They try to eliminate the quilombo leaders
the people who are fighting for our resistance
They were already threatening us with prison and now they have decided to eliminate him by killing”
We don´t know if they have any involvement with the land grabbers
The Flexeira quilombolas also lack information about the investigations into the murders that took place in the community last year
quilombola Antônio Gonçalo was washing his motorcycle in front of his house when two men shot him
quilombola João de Deus Moreira Rodrigues was shot by gunmen while he was sitting in front of his house
Rodrigues had previously survived another attack
when he was shot twice in the back on December 7
On the occasion of the murders of Juscelino and Wanderson, a public letter signed by several quilombola and peasant associations
alerted that the deaths were carried by private landowner militias
the Secretary of Human Rights and Popular Participation of Maranhão reported that “the traditional communities of Arari are assisted by the State Commission for the Prevention of Violence in the Countryside and in the City (Coecv)
that the attempted murders are being investigated and that the victims and family members were taken in by the state’s protection programs”
The Secretary also reported that the community’s complaints were forwarded to the District Attorney’s office and the state’s Public Defender’s Office.Quiqui’s family
had asked for state protection while the quilombola leader was hospitalized
fearing that there would be another attempted murder
“But then he died and the State did not respond to anything else
nor did it even send condolences to the family
Juscelino and Wanderson were among the five Cedro residents who were arrested in 2019 for having organized to tear down electric fences around the community’s fields
another quilombola who was also arrested at the time
survived an assassination attempt on December 17th.
Juscelino also responded to two of several lawsuits imputed by landowners with whom the communities have conflicts
The lawsuits accuse the quilombolas of “dispossession or disturbance” and aim to prevent the construction of new houses or swiddens on the lands they traditionally live in
One of the lawsuits is focused on preventing the opening of a path for quilombola children to travel to school since the path historically used by them is now used to raise buffaloes
Laudivino is categorical in stating that there is a relationship between the dispute over land and the murders
“We certainly believe that the land grabbers are behind [the murders]
form groups and give strength to each other.”
The quilombolas resent the public authorities’ lack of action
the police come to intimidate us and force us to testify,” he says
after the murders of Juscelino and Wanderson
the quilombolas organized a demonstration in front of the Civil Police station
carrying images of coffins to symbolize the murdered
A new investigation was then opened by the police
accusing the protestors of making death threats to police
one of the Flexeira residents murdered last year
was among those accused in this investigation
was removed by the Public Security Secretariat in 2020
after numerous complaints from the quilombola organizations
He would never investigate anything that the community reported
but to the other side he was quite diligent,” Lima says
no internal procedure was opened against Neto
In November last year, Jan Jarab, UN Human Rights Representative for South America, was in Brazil and visited the Baixada Maranhense quilombola communities
he heard reports of violence and murders against local leaders
and with the Federal Public Defender’s Office
as well as members of traditional communities and civil society
The findings should be included in the next UN Human rights report
Lopes is a member of the Maranhão State Breeders Association (Ascem)
an organization of ranchers with an important role in the state government
Their representatives are often received by institutions and public officials to discuss their demands
an article published by the state news agency reported the visit of Ascem members to the Itaqui Port
they were received by the president of Maranhão Port Administration Company
Ascem members visited the president of the Maranhão Justice Court and asked for greater participation by the Judiciary in the Agricultural Exhibition of Maranhão
“The Judiciary services have great social reach and will be very important for the community and the citizens who will attend the event,” said the president of Ascem at the time
according to the news story on the Court website
One of the lawsuits filed by Carlos Santana Lopes and Angela Salazar is a writ of mandamus at SEMA
aiming to prevent Maranhão state from removing its electric fences from Arari public fields
The couple filed two lawsuits accusing murdered quilombola Juscelino Fernandes Diniz and his family of dispossession and disturbance for having started building a brick house within the area where they raise buffaloes
The couple filed another lawsuit against Rogério Rodrigues (Quiqui’s son)
Sebastião Verde Diniz (brother of quilombola José Domingos
who suffered attempted murder in December 2021)
with the aim of preventing the residents of Cedro to make their swidden
Another rancher in conflict with the Cedro community is Francisco de Assis Bogea
Bogea is an alternate city council member at the Arari City Council
When accounting for his election campaign in 2020
he declared a piece of land in “Cedro village” valued at R$300,000 and a house in the community at R$100,000
Bogea filed a lawsuit against Quiqui and other quilombola leaders
alleging that he was being prevented from building a house on his property
the 211-hectare Mamãe Princesa Isabel farm
Valéria sees the multiple lawsuits against quilombola families as an attempt to “take over all of Cedro’s land”
and we have lived here for over 200 years.”
The report tried to contact the judge Angela Salazar and State Deputy Attorney Carlos Santana offices and also their respective lawyers in the cases against the quilombolas
Lico Bogea and his lawyer also did not provide an answer by the time of publication
*Valéria is the fictitious name of one of the quilombolas who preferred not to be identified for fear of retaliation

Although COVID-19 cases are declining in Brazil, the pandemic is putting decades of public health gains there at risk, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday.
With global attention and support focused this week on the severe crisis in India, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus used his regular media briefing to highlight the situation in South America’s largest country.
Brazil has been among nations hardest hit by COVID-19
More than 400,000 people have died from the disease
and over 14 million cases have been reported
“Cases have now declined for four weeks in a row, and hospitalizations and deaths are also declining. This is good news, and we hope this trend continues. But the pandemic has taught us that no country can ever let down its guard”, said Tedros.
Brazil has been battling an increase in cases
Intensive care units across the country have been at almost full capacity this month
“Brazil has a long and proud history in public health
with three decades of investments in strengthening primary health care and progress towards universal health coverage
But the pandemic has hit Brazil’s health system hard and threatens to unravel those gains”
the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)
are working with the Brazilian authorities to provide medicines and other urgently needed supplies
Brazil is also scaling up domestic production of COVID-19 vaccines
said the Brazilian authorities are also accelerating vaccination efforts
including through better distribution of doses
Dr. Queiroga said the country’s “diversified strategy” for the pandemic includes partnerships for technology transfer, bilateral contracts with pharmaceutical companies, and participation in the global vaccine solidarity mechanism, COVAX.
we are distributing more than 60 million doses of vaccines
and we have already applied more than 41 million doses”
we still have a long way to go because we need to be able to vaccinate 2.4 million people every day.”
The Health Minister appealed for countries with extra vaccine doses to share them with Brazil
He also spoke of action to support indigenous people
reporting that more than 500,000 doses so far have been distributed.
the Americas has been the region most affected by the pandemic
Uruguay and Guyana have reported a dramatic rise in infections
Director of the Department of Health Emergencies for WHO/PAHO
said several countries have seen an increase in cases among younger people.
“These are linked to increased exposure and no vaccination in this group as most countries have few vaccines and are applying them to vulnerable older groups and healthcare workers,” he explained.
PAHO is helping countries to plan for a needed sudden increase in the use of oxygen
and to improve protection for health workers.
Dr Ugarte underscored the need for more vaccines in the region
“COVAX has delivered 7.3 million doses in Latin America and the Caribbean so far
but the need for vaccines is much greater”
“Many countries cannot afford large bilateral deals with producers and are relying on COVAX for vaccines
but the outlook is not optimistic for increased supplies soon.”
The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine has been listed for emergency use, WHO announced on Friday
It becomes the fifth vaccine to receive the validation
which is a prerequisite for being included in COVAX
Emergency Use Listing (EUL) assesses the quality
It also allows countries to expedite their own regulatory approvals to import and administer doses
The Moderna vaccine had previously been reviewed by WHO’s expert advisory group
which in January recommended its use for people 18 and above
A lack of multi-factor authentication (MFA) which leads to a preventable data breach could result in substantial financial penalties
the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has warned
The ICO’s Deputy Commissioner Stephen Bonner told Infosecurity there is no longer any excuse for not deploying MFA across all external connections
“It’s now a well-developed and mature technology that can be deployed relatively straightforwardly
and the benefits far outweigh any costs,” he noted
“We want to add to the costs of not doing it by having this kind of consequence [financial penalties] being there,” Bonner added
Bonner’s comments followed the ICO’s announcement that it had fined IT software provider Advanced £3.07m ($3.97m) after a 2022 ransomware attack that put the personal information of 79,404 people at risk
Advanced provides data processing services to a range of organizations
including the NHS and other healthcare providers
The incident resulted in significant disruption to health services in the UK
The compromised data included details of how to gain entry into the homes of 890 people who were receiving care at home
Hackers were able to access systems of Advanced’s health and care subsidiary via a customer account that did not have MFA implemented
Bonner revealed that the ICO’s investigation found that Advanced may not have fully rolled out MFA across its external accounts due to concerns that customers may have objected to the extra authentication method
Such concerns are not a legitimate reason for not implementing MFA
“If you're entrusted with this kind of data
there's a minimum set of standards you have to achieve
and this is absolutely one of them,” he stated
Other security failings that enabled the attack to succeed included a lack of comprehensive vulnerability scanning and inadequate patch management
These failings also contributed to the large penalty issued
This is the first time the ICO has fined a data processor
with the regulator keen to send a message to these providers about their security obligations
The ICO had announced a provisional £6.1m ($7.9m) fine for Advanced for the data breach in August 2024
This penalty was halved after the ICO and Advanced reached a voluntary settlement
in which the IT provider agreed to pay the £3.07m penalty without appealing
The ICO identified Advanced’s proactive engagement with government agencies
including the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and National Crime Agency (NCA)
Bonner explained that this approach helped reduce the harm to those individuals and organizations who were impacted by the breach
“That is exactly the behavior we want to encourage and one key message to take away from this is that there's a lot of good financial reasons to engage correctly with the authorities,” he noted
Bonner added that reaching a voluntary settlement is in the wider public interest as it draws the case to a close without costly appeals and delays
The UK’s Information Commissioner John Edwards has previously outlined his belief that the levying of fines is not necessarily an effective way of improving data protection practices
serving only to tie up the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) in litigation
This is an approach that differs significantly from regulators in the EU, who have frequently issued fines worth hundreds of millions for data protection failings over recent years
The ICO’s primary focus is to work with organizations to ensure that damaging incidents do not occur
Issuing fines is “not our first choice” when breaches do occur
he acknowledged that fines are sometimes necessary when there are serious consequences for people’s data
One positive outcome from issuing financial penalties is that it can focus business leaders’ minds
potentially leading to more resources for cybersecurity
Bonner said: “We find that fines make headlines
the coverage gets lots of attention and that puts it on the radar of boards across organizations
Sending a message around implementing basic security controls such as MFA was a significant factor in the penalty handed to Advanced
Bonner warned organizations that they can expect fines to increase in the future in cases like this where basic controls have not been implemented
“This fine acts as dissuasive and effective message to the whole economy,” he commented

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and small red bean [Vigna angularis (Willd
Ohwi & Ohashi)] are the main ingredients of walnut-shaped “Hodugwaja”
An innovative wheat small red bean double cropping system was evaluated in a rice field in the Cheonan region (Korea) to determine its effect on land use
and quality of wheat and small red bean were also investigated using selected wheat (‘Keumgang’
The effect of different fertilizer treatments [N1 (50%
while the effect of sowing date and density were investigated for the small red beans
Our findings revealed that the best variety
and nitrogen level combination for wheat small red bean double cropping system in Cheonan area is ‘Goso’ sown on October 26
and ‘Chungju’ sown on July 10 with high ridge cultivation
This system was the most ideal yielding 521.6 kg/10a (1000 m2) and 275 kg/10a of ‘Goso’ and ‘Chungju’
This pioneering research provides a reliable cultivation plan and theoretical basis for implementing the double cropping system of wheat small red beans in central Korea
this study also provides a basis for future field experiments on wheat planting patterns and small red bean fertilization
the choice of crops in a double cropping system is influenced by the market demands
It became popular in the 1970s and was sold at the Cheonan train station and on the trains using catering trolleys
it has an international market besides Korea
the wheat small red bean planting system is still difficult as the small red bean is usually sown from late May to mid-June
which is likely to conflict with the wheat harvest from early to mid-June
it was necessary to discuss the effect of small red bean replacing rice and delaying the sowing date of small red bean on yield and growth
Our attempt to establish such a planting pattern in rice fields has very positive and enlightening significance for future agricultural production in Korea
There was no obstacle to the production of wheat in time
and the key factor affecting the yield was the amount of fertilizer applied
Because it was necessary to explore the sowing time of small red bean in double cropping system
we pay attention to the planting time and planting density
In order to explore the planting mode with the highest yield of the two crops in the double cropping system
This research sought to determine the optimal varieties
and fertilizer levels for establishing a double cropping system of wheat and small red beans in a rice paddy field in central Korea
The study majored on (1) selection of suitable varieties of wheat (‘Keumgang’

Meteorological data between 1981 and 2010 (Normal year) and from 2015 to 2017 (experiment period) were obtained from the Cheonan Meteorological Center (Table 1)
and average temperatures were higher from 2015 to 2017 than from 1981 to 2010 throughout the year
Daily minimum temperatures were higher from 2015 to 2017 than in 1981–2010 (0.5–1.2 °C from November to May and not more than 0.2 °C from July to September)
The precipitation in the experiment period was higher than the Normal year throughout the year
especially from October to December when wheat emerges and tillers
the sunshine duration in the experiment period was slightly lower than the Normal year throughout the year
the double cropping system of wheat and small red beans could succeed in central Korea
especially utilizing the rice field during reduced rice consumption
ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) was used to compare means via the least significant difference (LSD) at 1% and 5% significance levels

Meteorological environments during wheat cultivation periods in Cheonan area; (a) daily average temperature (°C)
Wheat was sown on October 26 in the Cheonan area
considering the harvest time of the two crops
the average monthly meteorological factors and changing trends were investigated until June 25
most farmers do exceed the recommended quantity
the growth and yield of wheat were analyzed at different nitrogen fertilizer levels
The temperature and sunshine duration comparison between Cheonan and southern regions (Gwangju, Jeon-ju) from March to April during the internode growth period of wheat is shown in Table 6
The average and maximum temperatures were lower by 1.2–1.8 °C and 0.8–1.4 °C
in the Cheonan area compared with the southern area
the sunshine duration was similar in both regions
The yield-related characteristics of wheat, based on the varieties and nitrogen fertilization levels, are shown in Table 7
The average number of grains per ear of the three varieties ‘Keumgang’
the characteristics of the variety significantly affected the number of grains per ear than the fertilizer type and levels
indicating the influence of nitrogen fertilizer levels
indicating that the characteristics of the crop variety affect the weight of 1000 grains
Meteorological data during small red bean cultivation periods in Cheonan area; (a) daily average temperature (°C)
the wheat has to be harvested after mid-June if small red beans are planted after wheat
it is necessary to explore the possibility of planting in July
the sowing period can be extended based on the chosen variety
The growth temperature was suitable up to the flowering period when the three varieties were sown between July 1 and July 20 (Table 8)
the number of days to flowering was also not significantly different between July and June sowing
The average monthly meteorological elements from July 1, the first sowing date of small red bean grown after harvesting wheat, to October 21, the final harvesting date, are shown in Table 7
the cumulative temperature decreased with a delay of the sowing date
‘Hongeon’ had an average of 33 days from sowing to flowering date for the three sowing dates of July 1
The cumulative temperature required for ‘Hongeon’ growth is also 1000 °C or higher
the cumulative temperature does not influence growth and harvest when sowing before July 20 except for the ‘Hongeon’ in Cheonan
and seeds per pod increases in the sparse planting plot
Park et al. showed that the stem length increases with an increased number of plants per hill due to plant competition64
the stem length does not elongate enough to induce lodging since the cultivation period is short
The growth and yield characteristics of the small red bean based on the sowing date and density are shown in Tables 9 and 10
The analysis was conducted for three years (2015–2017) in the wheat small red bean double cropping system in the Cheonan area
The average stem lengths of ‘Chungju’, ‘Hongeon’, and ‘Arari’ were 61.4 cm, 44.2 cm, and 59.3 cm, respectively. The stem lengths were significantly different between sowing dates and sowing density (Table 9)
with July 10 and 20 producing the longest and shortest lengths
the stem length was longest at 60 × 15 cm and shortest at 60 × 25 cm
‘Chungju’ stem length was longest (66.0 cm) at 60 × 15 cm on July 1
‘Hongeon’ (51.7 cm) at 60 × 25 cm on July 1
and ‘Arari’ (63.1 cm) at 60 × 15 cm on July 10
The average number of pods per plant in ‘Chungju’, ‘Hongeon’, and ‘Arari’ were 34.1, 23.6, and 31.4, respectively. The number of pods was significantly different depending on the cultivation method, such as sowing dates and sowing density (Table 9)
The pods were also highest at 60 × 25 cm spacing
The number of pods was highest at 60 × 25 cm
the average score of the national adaptation experiment conducted for over three years
the number of seeds per pod was about 2 seeds higher than the national average
the yield was lowest in ‘Hongeon’ at 60 × 20 cm on July 10
‘Chungju’ and ‘Arari’ yield were higher on July 1 and July 10 than July 20 sowing
the ‘Hongeon’ yield was similar on different sowing dates
a high yield was obtained at an earlier sowing date and shorter sowing density
the three varieties had good yield even when sowed on July 20
‘Hongeon’ sowing was delayed due to the bad weather conditions
increasing the sowing period compared to ‘Chungju’ or ‘Arari’
The study results demonstrated that ‘Goso’ (wheat) and ‘Chungju’ (small red bean) are the best varieties for Hodugwaja production
and superior characteristics of bean sediment
Our findings reveal that in a double cropping system
‘Goso’ sown on October 26 with additional nitrogen fertilization at 200% of the standard (N3)
and ‘Chungju’ sown on July 10 at a sowing density of 60 × 15 cm in a high ridge (25 cm) cultivation method
more studies are necessary for the standard fertilization level of nitrogen in wheat cultivation

checks in each week during the college football season with a retrospective about the Buckeyes
Ohio State completed its 1978 season in the Gator Bowl against seventh-ranked Clemson
The 20th-ranked Buckeyes entered the December 29 game with a record of 7-3-1
and interestingly Clemson was a two-point favorite
A crowd of 72,011 attended the Friday evening contest
Clemson drove 80 yards for the game's first touchdown midway through the second quarter to put the Tigers on top
after Bob Atha's 27-yard field goal had staked Ohio State to an early 3-0 lead late in the first period
quarterback Art Schlichter drove his team 78 yards and scored Ohio State's first touchdown with a four-yard keeper
Vlade Janakievski's extra point attempt was blocked
but the Buckeyes had regained the lead at 9-7
Right before halftime Obed Arari booted a 47-yard field goal to put the Tigers back on top after 30 minutes of play
84-yard touchdown march to increase their lead to 17-9
Schlichter scored his second touchdown of the evening with a two-yard run in the final period
Ohio State now trailed 17-15 with 8:11 remaining
A two-point conversion attempt failed when the freshman QB was stopped on an option keeper
Buckeye middle guard Tim Sawicki gave his squad new life by recovering a Clemson fumble at the OSU 24 with 4:22 remaining
Schlichter quickly moved his team downfield
knowing that a field goal would earn Ohio State a victory
Schlichter fired a short pass across the middle intended for tailback Ron Springs
Tiger middle guard Charlie Bauman dropped back from the line of scrimmage to intercept Schlichter's toss
and was forced out of bounds in front of the Ohio State bench with 1:59 left to play
Woody Hayes struck Bauman and had to be physically restrained by his players and assistant coaches − the rest is history
Hayes talked briefly with his squad following the 17-15 loss
then asked defensive coordinator George Hill to represent him at the post-game press conference
Ohio State Athletic Director Hugh Hindman and President Harold Enarson met late into the night
and decided that the 65-year-old coach would be relieved of his duties
Early Saturday morning Hindman met with Hayes in Hayes' hotel room
Hindman apparently told the coach he could "resign or be relieved." Hayes had many times stated that when he elected to retire
Hayes called Horning at approximately 8:00 a.m
Hindman explained that Hayes had been relieved of his duties
and that the decision had the full support of President Enarson
As Ohio State's chartered plane approached the Columbus airport later that morning
Hayes used the public address system to tell his team
"I will not be your coach next year." He wished all his players the best of success and encouraged them to continue to do well in the classroom
The 1978 Gator Bowl brought to a close one of the most colorful and successful coaching careers in college football history
Woody Hayes' 28-season Ohio State record was an outstanding 205-61-10
and his 33-year lifetime college coaching record was 238-72-10
Hayes' Ohio State teams captured 13 Big Ten titles and five national championships
Fifty-six of his Ohio State players were named first-team All-American
and in 1974-75 tailback Archie Griffin became the only two-time winner of the coveted Heisman Trophy
Woody Hayes was an associate professor who took great pride in teaching classes at Ohio State during the off-season
He had risen to the rank of Lieutenant Commander during World War II
and commanded the USS Rinehart during maneuvers in both the Atlantic and Pacific
Hayes continued to be a vigorous goodwill ambassador for The Ohio State University
Hayes' positive influence will continue for many future generations
