Jill Caviglia-Harris of Salisbury University’s Economics and Finance and Environmental Studies departments and Daniel Harris of the Geography and Geosciences Department have studied the effects of land use and deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon
Although the science is what motivates their work
and their welcoming culture that keeps them going back
As part of an international team of academics
they spent one month this past summer conducting National Science Foundation-funded field work in Rondônia
SU environmental studies and political science major Rachel Dubbs followed the researchers and recorded her observations in a series of articles
My preparation for travel to Rondônia included reading Behaving Brazilian
a book that describes typical Brazilian customs
I was skeptical that the book would be useful as it was published almost forty years ago
I found certain Brazilian mannerisms noted to be interesting and still relevant
in Brazil it is almost always rude to eat with your hands
the “OK” signal is an offensive gesture
and the way you dress portrays your socioeconomic status
My skepticism of the book began to dissipate as soon as I touched down in Brazil
It was then that I noticed the Manaus airport was full of people sporting designer handbags and high heels
I felt very out of place in my grey sweatpants and worn out book bag
After landing in Porto Velho and joining the team
my recognition of cultural differences continued when I accompanied students who were surveying local farmers
The long drive to the farms allowed me to reflect upon the book and the passages that described what is expected of the host upon a guest’s arrival
I understood that Brazilians supposedly were warmer and more welcoming than Americans
but when I found out that we were showing up unannounced to the farmers’ homes with hundreds of survey questions
I thought we would be turned away by every single one
I learned that the cultural norms outlined in Behaving Brazilian were correct
Gilberto de Assis Miranda had an established cheese business called Queijo 4 Cachoeiras (“Cheese 4 Waterfalls”)
Gilberto opened his home to the survey team and me
he picked a fresh papaya from his tree and cut it for us to eat
Later he plucked another unusual fruit and sent me home with “cupaçu,” a unique
indigenous fruit unlike anything I’d had before
I found him to be someone of what I thought was rare selflessness
a trait I thought we’d never encounter again
but her home was small with only a kitchen and three bedrooms for 13 people
I noticed she was signaling toward my shoulders and my face
a bilingual Brazilian postdoctoral student
began laughing and told me that Clara wanted to know why my shoulders were so broad
Thais communicated to her that I was an American
Clara gasped and said “Un Americana em minha casa!” She rushed over to me and began pinching my face and ears
She told Thais that it had always been her dream to go to America
The experience brought Thais and me to tears
It was difficult to say goodbye to farmers like Gilberto and Clara
I will always remember their warm and welcoming behavior and being offered fresh papaya
coffee and bananas. I will also remember when the Brazilian students purchased English translation books to communicate better with me
and when the students all got together and began to sing and dance when we had Brazilian barbeque
and lively about Brazilian culture… even a book as accurate as Behaving Brazilian could not have prepared me for it

earnings surpassed analyst estimates after the agriculture giant was able to capitalize on a record soybean and corn harvest in Brazil
Adjusted earnings came in at $1.89 a share, the company reported Tuesday, about 19% higher than what analysts expected
results fell below records set in the second quarter of last year
CEO Juan Luciano said on an earnings call that investments to improve export capacity at Brazil ports have paid off
and the company is able to buy cheaper grains by avoiding higher transportation costs
Bumper soybean and corn crops pushed up trucking prices to an all-time record in Brazil
but ADM's supply chain investments have allowed the company to keep costs down
"We see the Brazilian port congestion … giving margins to those companies that have invested in the infrastructure to be able to capitalize on that
ADM made major enhancements to its terminals in Brazil's port cities of Santos and Barcarena
expanding storage and adding more truck lanes
Luciano said the company will likely export "a bit less" from the U.S
as it relies more on ports in South America
Other food companies may be forced to rely on imports from Brazil due to an unexpected decrease in U.S. soybean production
soybean trade market has been characterized by vigorous domestic demand for crush and strong Brazil competition on the global market," a report from the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service said
"The expected continuation of these conditions into the next marketing year coupled with the forecast decrease in supplies means that the deficit will largely be taken out of exports in order to meet domestic demand."
ADM raised earning expectations for full-year 2023
Results were also bolstered by higher demand for food oil and biofuel
slowing appetite for animal feed and plant-based proteins somewhat weighed down earnings
ADM reported $927 million in net income for the second quarter
Company shares rose 11 cents to close Wednesday at $86.91 on the New York Stock Exchange

The grain trader said it completed its first shipments of “verified
Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. said Tuesday it will expand a pilot program that traces soybeans within its supply chain to ensure the commodities have no connection to deforestation
The grain trader will extend its traceability capabilities to key locations across North America in the 2024 growing season
The expansion follows the first successful shipments of "verified
The move also comes ahead of a European Union regulation set to go into effect Dec
which will require companies to prove their agricultural commodities do not contribute to land degradation or originate from recently deforested land
our future and success depend on the farmers we work with and for
which is why we’re committed to helping support their businesses and their legacies by ensuring that global markets remain open to U.S
ADM’s vice president of North America River and Export
The successful pilot involved the delivery of 2.4 million bushels of fully traceable soybeans to customers in Europe throughout 2023
including Farmer Business Network's gradable digital platform
“While there are still issues – including how full compliance will be defined
measured and enforced – to work through in advance the EU’s deforestation regulations
we are confident in our ability to continue to deliver to customers in Europe,” said Jon Turney
ADM is aiming for its supply chain to be deforestation-free by 2025. The commodities giant said in its 2022 environmental report that it has traced 100% of its direct and indirect soybean suppliers in Argentina
The grain trader is about 86% to reaching deforestation-free supply chains for its soybeans

“Golacooooooooooooo,” screamed the commentator on Brazil’s SporTV at about quarter to one on Saturday afternoon
a Brazilian television football commentator was understating things a little
Almost every year at the Copa Sao Paulo de Futebol Junior
there is a goal from an emerging superstar that reverberates at least around Brazil
In 2022, this was it. Fifteen-year-old Endrick is Brazil’s latest emerging superstar. And as if Vinicius Jr was yet old enough to be the ‘old’ anything
Endrick has already been dubbed the ‘new Vinicius Jr.’
The goal was testament to both his ability and attitude
With nine minutes of the 90 to go and Palmeiras 1-0 up
Endrick could have waltzed around the field and done a few tricks and flicks
he closed down the Ariquemes defenders like a greyhound chasing a rabbit
He intercepted the ball and then in one surgically precise movement span
knocked it past his man and surged into the area
He flicked it around one side of the next defender and ran around the other – the half-moon
they call it in Brazil – then with just a ‘keeper to beat
unflinching dink over the advancing goalkeeper
Remember the name: Endrick, only 15 years old. Same agents as Vini Jr pic.twitter.com/0E2ssCQwux

The world’s greatest youth football tournament
The launchpad for dozens of glittering careers
The Brazilian football season runs from February to December
And as it’d clearly be an affront to the nation to have an entire month go by without football
One-hundred-and-twenty-eight teams from Brazil and other South American nations descend on the state of Sao Paulo for an Under-20 tournament (or Under-21 in 2022
to make up for the fact it was cancelled in 2021)
It is broadcast live on terrestrial TV and the final is played out in front of 35,000 at the iconic Pacaembu stadium in the state capital
there is a player who uses it to imprint their name on the collective consciousness
And with just a minute to go against Ariquemes
Endrick confirmed the suspicion that he’s something special with another strike that was not quite as good as the first but would still have you reaching for your pen to write home about

Yet for those who were really paying attention
the name Endrick – a misspelt tribute to the Newcastle midfielder Jeff
international scouts have been circling around a player who performs way beyond his years
Endrick scored a quite ridiculous bicycle kick in front of a significant crowd at Santos’ Rei Pele training ground before getting another in the return leg at Allianz Parque to win Palmeiras the Under-11 Sao Paulo state championship and gain his first little taste of fame

He scored at least one goal during the tournaments at each age level
becoming the first player to do so in a single year
and took home winners medals for the Under-15s and Under-20s
making his debut for the Under-21s at the Copinha
he scored twice on his debut against Assu and followed that up with the above brace against Ariquemes
Was the ease with which he made the step a surprise
Asked by Globo whether he expected to start the year so well
I worked the whole of 2021 for this moment and knew that if I was concentrated and determined
That confidence is born of a very impressive record. The two against Ariquemes were his 166th and 167th goals in 170 games at all ages for Palmeiras
And those scouts are closing in, it seems. Unfortunately but inevitably a report has emerged linking him with Manchester City
Endrick is still well off the age at which an overseas move would be possible though
He’ll turn 18 in July 2024 and can’t even sign a professional contract with (or play a senior game for) Palmeiras until he’s 16 in July this year
the club that has nurtured him will have two years to try to turn him from youth sensation into effective first-team footballer
we’ll enjoy watching him do his thing right where he is
The excitement is real and this is the Copinha is the stage on which to excite
Let’s just hope it’s not another case of too much

Piranhas turned up dead in a sewer in Shropshire
Piranhas are not normally thought to be dangerous to humans
Wed 4 Feb 2015 at 21:59A six-year-old girl has died after piranhas ate all the flesh from her legs when her grandparents’ canoe capsized during a thunderstorm in Brazil
named Adrila Muniz as reported by Brazilian news channel Globo
was with four other children and her grandmother in the boat during a family holiday
Adverse weather caused it to turn over and the children were plunged into the water in Monte Alegre
Brazilian newspaper Ariquemes Agora reports
however the girl was not reached in time and a pool of blood and a shoal of piranha fish were spotted around her
The grandfather and mother of the girl were also on board the canoe
The girl is pictured in extremely graphic images in various Brazilian news reports with completely exposed bones from below her hips after the attack by the fish with razor-sharp teeth
The girl had to be pulled from the water and dragged into the canoe before being taken to hospital on 27 January
Local media report that the girl died at the scene
Carnivorous breeds of piranhas have a reputation as ferocious predators and are more commonly found in bodies of water in and around the Amazon rainforest

The girl had been on a family holiday with her grandmother and other children when she fell into the water in Rio Maicuru in Monte Alegre
Her grandmother told Brazilian newspaper Ariquemes Agora: "I tried to hold onto her
but with all the other children around she slipped out of my grasp
"I couldn't see her any more when we got to the bank."
However the little girl was not reached in time
and a pool of blood and a shoal of piranha fish were soon spotted around her
with all the skin on her lower body stripped away by the flesh-eating fish
which we have deemed too shocking to include
showed her legs as nothing more than exposed bones below her hips
but have said it was a tragic accident that was unlikely to result in any charges
