How Aurora softball weathered the stormConfidence proved critical in Richfield on an afternoon with no shortage of challenges starting with the storm that hit just as the Greenmen were warming up It was almost as if that storm carried into the game as Aurora made a number of uncharacteristic miscues in the bottom of the first from yielding a leadoff walk to an error to multiple other close plays in the field the Greenmen didn't make that they typically do "We kind of had a bit of a rough start with the rain and all that kind of delaying our warmups but [the mindset] was always just come out and attack," Aurora senior Rayna Unverferth said just focus on the future and do your best to make things happen." the Greenmen had a golden opportunity with the top of their order — including five players with 100 career hits — coming to the plate "It's just do anything you can to get on base do anything you can to move the runners," Unverferth said there's really no mindset except just do anything you can to get on base or make something happen." Just get on board and get the assembly line churning which is exactly what Unverferth did when she bounced back from a tough strike call on the first pitch to lash the next pitch up the middle and I kind of noticed once she got that first strike she usually came back with some type of strike," Unverferth said "And she hadn't been pitching me really anything inside pulling a couple of balls foul to stay alive before lining a low outside pitch to the opposite field for another single "I was just kind of anxious in that at-bat because I knew we needed baserunners "But I saw I'll just try and hit whatever I could with Bohanan following with a smash up the middle to draw Aurora within a run Julia Miller later beat out a comebacker off the pitcher's glove as Bohanan came across the plate to tie the score the game-winning run scored on a pitch to the backstop there was the matter of silencing those Minutemen bats after they compiled five runs in the first three innings Retton tore through the bottom of the order in the fourth then benefitted from Petrash's resourcefulness in the fifth Petrash raced in on a pop but couldn't quite get there in time the senior second baseman had the instincts to quickly pick the ball up and fire to second for the force I think about what I can do next to get an out and so I'm just trying to read wherever I can," Petrash said then Petrash calmly corralled a ball that ricocheted off Retton for a 1-4-3 putout to get out of one of the biggest jams of the afternoon "I was just going to back up Ret," Petrash said but I was luckily there for her to get that out Aurora followed that hard-fought win with another against Highland the following day After winning league titles each of the last four years The Greenmen aren't taking anything for granted as proven by Retton's reaction after she struck out the Minutemen's leadoff hitter on a beautiful pitch on the outer black to start the seventh Unflappable and usually pretty quiet in the circle "I just knew I was having a little bit of a tough game pitching "Like I tell them before every time when we're out there The northern lights will likely be visible to several states along the Canadian border on Monday night after recent geomagnetic storms made the phenomenon more visible according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Some minor to moderate radio blackouts are also expected this week The NOAA forecast auroral activity with a Kp index of three on a scale of nine meaning the northern lights will likely move farther from the poles and be “quite pleasing to look at” for anyone in the right areas The Kp index may increase up to nearly four which could make the northern lights visible in parts of South Dakota and Maine There is a chance for some minor to moderate radio blackouts through Wednesday indicating some high-frequency radio communications could be impacted A view line marking a minimal opportunity sweeps just below the Canadian border suggesting the northern lights will have a low chance of appearing in northeastern Washington Most of Alaska and northern Canada will have a higher chance high vantage point will likely be the best spot to observe the northern lights turning off flash and lowering the camera’s shutter speed photography experts told National Geographic it’s best to use a wide-angle lens an F-stop or aperture of along the northern U.S border will have a shot at seeing the northern lights Saturday night with forecasters predicting a minor showing of auroral activity expected to increase later this weekend NOAA's northern lights forecast improves on Sunday night (Photo by Hasan Akbas/Anadolu via Getty .. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasts a Kp index of three on a scale of nine for Saturday night meaning the aurora will move further from the poles and produce more movement and formations The viewing line for Saturday’s northern lights stretches as low as the border between North Dakota and South Dakota with chances of seeing aurora borealis increasing the farther north of the line viewers are located Those who do not catch a look at the northern lights Saturday will have another chance to try Sunday when the viewing line is forecasted to drop further south and the Kp index increases to four Areas within Saturday’s viewing line include the northern tip of Idaho northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s upper peninsula The states have a low chance at seeing the lights North Dakota and Minnesota having the best chances (see map below) The best viewing hours for the northern lights are between 10 p.m Viewers can increase their visibility by observing from places with high vantage points little to no light pollution and clear skies Night mode and low shutter speeds on smartphones can help observers with capturing the northern lights through photos as well as the use of tripods for image stability Traditional cameras should use high ISO values wide apertures and wide-angle lenses to snap photos of the northern lights Aurora borealis is created through solar flares and coronal mass ejections types of solar events that interact with oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the Earth’s atmosphere Electrons interact with the molecules and become “excited” before producing the auroral phenomenon Northern lights activity hit a peak last year as the sun’s surface reached a “solar maximum.” The activity of the natural phenomenon has been consistent in 2025 and could last into next year Less than a year ago, the northern lights amazed Florida residents sending colors swirling through the southern sky Floridians were treated to the awe-inspiring sight on May 10 the northern lights were visible farther south than normal Tuesday and they'll be visible again for some residents tonight Unfortunately, they won't be visible as far south as they were in 2024 so Florida residents will have to rely on online sources Still want to head outside for a little skygazing? Just… incredible," David Reese posted on X from Tallahassee at the time Reactions posted on social media ranged from "absolutely insane" to "this is amazing." Strong solar flares discharged from the sun caused northern lights to be visible across much of the U.S Though rare, Florida has seen northern lights before 2024. In 1989, the aurora borealis appeared on the First Coast was visible in a red glow tinged with pale green and white streaks Northern lights were visible as far as South Florida in 1981 though reports indicate they were much less impressive Then there was the Carrington Event of 1859 tinting the sky bright red and green which may have been the most powerful solar flare on record An increase in solar activity has more frequently fueled "space weather" that produces the right conditions for northern lights to flourish Regions of intense magnetic activity known as sunspots are proliferating on the solar surface and are capable of releasing intense bursts of radiation resulting in solar flares that can hurtle toward Earth at the speed of light, according to NOAA Some of the flares can be accompanied by coronal mass ejections Those ejections can collide with Earth’s magnetosphere to produce geomagnetic storms that unleash spectacular views of the northern lights in parts of the country where auroras are not often visible. NASA expects conditions to continue into 2025, bringing more opportunities to catch the northern lights. Contributing: Kim Luciani, USA Today Network-Florida the company’s autonomous trucks are finally hauling freight by Andrew J. Hawkins The company’s Class 8 trucks are now making customer deliveries between Dallas and Houston having already completed 1,200 miles “without a driver,” Aurora said The clients for these initial trips are Uber Freight the ridehailing company’s trucking brokerage a carrier that delivers time- and temperature-sensitive freight Aurora CEO Chris Urmson said he rode in the backseat during the first truck’s inaugural ride which he called “the honor of a lifetime.” “We founded Aurora to deliver the benefits of self-driving technology safely we are the first company to successfully and safely operate a commercial driverless trucking service on public roads.” Aurora said it plans to expand its driverless service to El Paso and Phoenix by the end of 2025 Founded in 2017 by alumni of Uber, Tesla, and Waymo, Aurora had planned to deploy its fully autonomous trucks in 2024. But those plans got delayed until this year with the company continuing to tweak its autonomous system for surface-street driving and construction sites Aurora says its technology presents a possible solution to the challenges currently facing the trucking industry and increasingly expensive operating costs The company says its system can address these specific problems while also reducing labor costs and heightening safety on the highway The need to start charging customers for deliveries is evident if you look at Aurora’s earnings. In its most recent report, the company reported a net loss of $748 million for 2024, down from $796 million the previous year. While the loss decreased, Aurora’s revenue estimates have declined. Aurora expects to report its first quarter earnings on May 8th. Dallas and Houston The company's driverless tech suite has already covered more than 1,200 miles (1,930 km) on public roads Aurora is the first company on the planet to commercially operate self-driving heavy-duty trucks which offers on-demand logistics solutions a carrier focused on time- and temperature-sensitive deliveries Here's what it looks like going down the highway between Dallas and Houston from inside a driverless truck with Aurora tech on board “Riding in the back seat for our inaugural trip was an honor of a lifetime – the Aurora Driver performed perfectly and it’s a moment I’ll never forget,” noted Chris Urmson Urmson is referring to an integrated suite of more than two dozen LiDAR and an onboard computer to make sense of all the incoming sensor data on a truck Aurora says this Level 4 autonomous setup "provides comprehensive awareness and attentiveness to changing road conditions." it claims that its proprietary LiDAR tech can see more than 1,476 ft (450 m) ahead and spot pedestrians up to 11 seconds sooner than human drivers at highway speeds at night Aurora says it can also detect and allow aggressive drivers to pass its trucks safely and slow down to change lanes and avoid parked emergency vehicles The Aurora Driver system can integrate with OEM trucks and the company has already partnered with Volvo and PACCAR (which makes trucks with Kenworth and Peterbilt badges) to bake its hardware and software into their freight vehicles That's a big step forward for the Pennsylvanian startup and potentially the start of a seismic shift for the trucking industry at large This launch was pretty much on schedule as per Aurora's previous forecasts The company also hopes to enable more capabilities like driving at night and in rainy weather and operating on more lanes along the US Interstate system One thing that stuck out to me in Aurora's press release is that it claimed its tech would not impact jobs in the industry, and linked to a 2021 report from the US Department of Transportation on the Macroeconomic Impacts of Automated Driving Systems in Long-Haul Trucking (PDF) the report states that while automation will naturally lead to a decrease in the number of jobs for long-haul truck drivers you'll need to consider that this tech will be adopted gradually and not all across the industry overnight the number of jobs disappearing each year is expected to be less than the number of drivers who leave the profession through natural turnover long-haul drivers whose jobs are affected should be able to find employment as short-haul truck drivers (whose jobs can't yet be automated as easily owing to more challenging routes and conditions) the overall US economy is projected to see an increase in total employment due to broader productivity gains resulting from the automation It will require a sharper mind than mine to conclude if the math will math Aurora is set to reveal its Q1 earnings on May 8 at which point it will also share more details about how its self-driving program will expand – and how the current trade war will affect its business going forward Source: Aurora Game Recap: Baseball | 5/2/2025 8:48:00 PM North Launches Commercial Driverless TrucksByRichard Bishop Forbes contributors publish independent expert analyses and insights I first rode in a self-driving vehicle in 1991 08:35pm EDTShareSaveCommentAurora's first-ever driverless truck runs shown from the perspective inside the cab Aurora Innovation, Inc announced today that the company has launched its commercial self-driving trucking service in Texas This is a major milestone for on-road autonomy at the same significance as Waymo’s 2018 debut of driverless services for people transport founded by veterans of the self-driving scene The challenges of operating a tractor-trailer hauling up to 80,000 pounds of cargo at highway speeds have been daunting More than a few companies tried and failed Aurora is now running regular driverless customer deliveries between Dallas and Houston the Aurora Driver has completed over 1,200 miles without a driver The milestone makes Aurora the first company to operate a commercial self-driving service with heavy-duty trucks on public roads Aurora plans to expand its driverless service to El Paso we are the first company to successfully and safely operate a commercial driverless trucking service on public roads,” said Chris Urmson “Riding in the back seat for our inaugural trip was an honor of a lifetime – the Aurora Driver performed perfectly and it’s a moment I’ll never forget.” “Our commitment to building a transformative technology and assembling a strong ecosystem of customers and partners have made this pivotal milestone possible,” added Urmson Aurora’s launch customers are Uber Freight an enterprise technology company powering intelligent logistics which delivers time- and temperature-sensitive freight Both companies have had long-standing supervised commercial pilots with Aurora “When Uber Freight and Aurora came together more than four years ago we set out to transform the future of logistics—and today "Moving autonomous commercial freight without anyone behind the wheel is a historic step forward in our mission to build a smarter and more efficient supply chain and one we’re proud to lead alongside Aurora.” safety-focused approach to delivering autonomous technology has always given me confidence they’re doing this the right way,” said Richard Stocking “Transforming an old school industry like trucking is never easy but we can’t ignore the safety and efficiency benefits this technology can deliver Autonomous trucks aren’t just going to help grow our business – they’re also going to give our drivers better lives by handling the lengthier and less desirable routes.” Aurora states that it prioritizes consistent transparency and collaboration with elected officials Entities that were briefed on the Aurora Driver’s readiness for driverless operations include two agencies within USDOT (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and key entities in Texas at the state and local levels Texas Governor Greg Abbott commented on Aurora’s commercial launch autonomous semis on the I-45 corridor will efficiently move products Texas offers businesses the freedom to succeed and the Aurora Driver will further spur economic growth and job creation in Texas.” states today allow for driverless vehicles Aurora notes that as the company opens new routes it will continue to work with stakeholders to ensure there is visibility into the company’s progress Aurora notes that the Aurora Driver is equipped with a powerful computer and sensors that can see beyond the length of four football fields enabling it to safely operate on the highway In over four years of supervised pilot hauls the Aurora Driver has delivered over 10,000 customer loads across three million autonomous miles For those of us who have been engaged in the driverless vehicle journey Aurora’s Verifiable AI approach to autonomy blends powerful learning models with guardrails to help ensure the rules of the road are followed Verifiable AI also played a critical role in enabling Aurora to close its driverless safety case as it enables the company to examine and validate the Aurora Driver’s decision making Aurora’s launch trucks are equipped with the Aurora Driver hardware kit and numerous redundant systems including braking enabling them to safely operate without a human driver The truck platform was validated and approved by Aurora for driverless operations on public roads Aurora believes working with manufacturing partners is the only way to deploy self-driving trucks at scale and continues to make progress with its partners on purpose-built driverless platforms designed for high-volume production Aurora is working with companies across the transportation ecosystem Photo’s of the autonomy launch vehicle shows a truck that has the distinctive grill of a Peterbilt vehicle from PACCAR Aurora noted that more details will be shared about its launch and ongoing commercial operations at its upcoming Q1 business review on May 8 Based on earlier statements made by Aurora the trucks running now have been upfitted with autonomy gear and computing power onto an autonomy-ready truck and more) provided by the truck manufacturer More autonomy excitement is expected later this year Bot Auto and Waabi have both announced driverless freight runs later this year Gatik has announced the beginning of driverless freight runs in short-haul B2B setting The “end game” to really start the transition to autonomy-based road freight is for all equipment to be integrated on the factory assembly line Plus and Torc also state that factory-built systems will be rolling out of factories in 2027 Aurora’s launch is the end of a long beginning Now comes the challenging journey to build a profitable business for the long run This hyperlapse video shows the entire Dallas to Houston run from a vantage point inside the truck cab Disclosure: Richard Bishop is
