It was the year 1995 in Bengaluru when farmers from Magadi used to bring avarekayi and avare bele to sell them in the southern parts of the city
Almost 50% of what they used to bring would go to waste as the bean was not popular among the residents here
Noticing that the farmers were throwing the peeled beans (hidkid bele) away after wrapping up their business for the day
asked them to sell whatever was remaining to her so that she could make food items out of it
She made savouries out of avare and started selling it under the brand of Shree Vasavi Condiments
Shivakumar came up with the idea of organising a small mela with food items made of avare to benefit and celebrate the farmers from whom she had been shopping
mixture and avarekaalu saaru were some of the star dishes during the mela
one of Bengaluru’s most awaited food events in recent times
The Mela has now hit a landmark with its 25th edition being organised from December 27
The first Avare Mela had around 10 dishes served and now for the 25th edition
“We have this ritual where we add one new dish to the menu every year
we have added 25 new dishes including avarekaalu mayonnaise
We have a gourmet menu and a bakery menu all featuring avare,” shared Swathi
What started as a small event with four farmers has now grown into a massive event whose footfall was around four lakh in the previous edition with over 500 farmers providing avare
was one of the first four and is still supplying the beans for the Mela
“Back then people in Bengaluru did not know any recipes of avare except avarekaalu saaru
If we brought 100 seru (measuring devices) of avare bele
Then our association with Vasavi Condiments started
A kg of avare bele used to be priced at ₹20 - 25 in the 2000s and now
the same quantity is selling at ₹250 - 300 per kg
While the quantity of avare bele used in the mela used to be around 300 – 500 kgs before
the Mela was held around the popular food street in V
Puram until 2023 when it moved to National College Grounds owing to the growing crowd
“There is a lot of people who work behind the scenes to bring avare to the tables in Bengaluru
There is no chemical or machine to help with the peeling of avarekayi
Women do it in their houses and then it comes to the market
We want people to know about their efforts.”

India is home to the largest population of visually-impaired persons (VIPs) in the world
accounting for around 40% of the world’s total blind population as measured by the World Health Organization (WHO)
AVARE (Augmented Virtual And Real Environments) is a project with a goal of empowering VIPs to experience rich multi-modal interactions in everyday activities ranging from work and social interactions to entertainment and exploration
We also aim to achieve these goals while remaining affordable in emerging markets
AVARE has currently resulted in three specific technologies
and a Virtual Reality (VR) environment called Empatheyes for empathetic understanding of visual impairments
FReAD (Feature Reading Accessibility Device) is a “smart belt” for VIPs that enhances the tactile exploration of an object with voiced descriptions
It was designed as an effort to apply modern computer vision to the common problem of exploring everyday objects
The belt contains an embedded camera that senses grasps
then subsequently analyzes text and objects for the user
ReSAC (Responsive Spatial Audio Cloud) is a technology for intuitively describing the world in audio form to a VIP
ReSAC aids in a user’s iterative exploration of new environments by verbalizing details (objects
aesthetics) as a spatialized “cloud” of words and sounds
Empatheyes is an immersive virtual environment that provides a realistic simulation of a broad spectrum of visual impairments
It has broad uses in both clinical and informal settings
The system may also help design vision augmentations to counter the impact of the impairments

Freshman walk-on Dillon Avare hit a crucial free throw in Louisville's NCAA Tournament game against Michigan State on Sunday
— Dillon Avare never expected to play a role in Louisville's game against Michigan State on Sunday
came off the Louisville bench to hit a critical free throw with 3:38 remaining in the Cardinals' NCAA tournament game against Michigan State on Sunday at the Carrier Dome
Avare's free throw almost proved to be the difference
but Louisville's Mangok Mathiang missed a free throw with 5 seconds left that would have put the Cardinals ahead
Michigan State pulled away in overtime for a 76-70 victory
"The win would've been awesome,'' Avare said
Avare went from understudy to star with 3:38 left in regulation
Louisville's Wayne Blackshear scored on a drive to the basket
but he was fouled and suffered a bloody nose on the play
The basket had drawn the Cardinals to within 61-57
but Louisville trainer Fred Hina couldn't stop the bleeding
Louisville coach Rick Pitino needed someone to take the free throw for Blackshear
"I thought the other coach got to pick
so I heard some people behind us saying 'Anas what'shisname','' Avare said
"I didn't think there was a chance it would be me
got to choose Blackshear's replacement
"I knew Wayne was feeling it from the free-throw line tonight so it was bad that he couldn't shoot it,'' Avare said
had played in just seven games for Louisville all season
He scored three points in Louisville's season-opener against Jacksonville State Nov
He was 1-for-2 at the free-throw line for the year
"I was running to the check-in table and I was like
"Is this really happening?'' Avare said
I had Mangok (Mathiang) and everybody talking to me
Trez (Montrezl Harrell) said 'You got this.' It was a confidence-booster.''
Pitino's choice might have raised some eyebrows
the Cardinals have a morning walk-through and finish it off with 100 free throws
Pitino has also known Avare since he was a kid
has been Pitino's friend and business partner since Pitino's days as the head coach at the University of Kentucky
Avare grew up in Lexington and attended Lexington Catholic High School
but he's been a Louisville fan his entire life
"I went to the good side,'' he said
"It wasn't easy growing up though
When I got the opportunity to walk-on here
it was like a dream come true.''
Only then he had to stay in the game and play defense
Michigan State's Travis Trice sized up Avare
but didn't try to shoot over him or drive by him
"It was the same as the check-in table,'' Avare said
I'm actually playing defense at a critical point in the game.' Luckily
Avare came out of the game after playing 17 seconds
"I'm glad that I hit it,'' Avare said of his late-game free throw
"but I wish we had been able to win.''

Rick Pitino has revealed that redshirt sophomore walk-on Dillon Avare will play at Eastern Kentucky on scholarship next season
and will be honored during U of L's senior night festivities
Dillon Avare will be joining Damion and Trey
Dillon graduated in three years with a 3.99 GPA
Who is that one professor who gave him an A-
Dillon will receive a scholarship and play at Eastern Kentucky University next season
He is a wonderful young man and one of the team's favorite people
Thank you son for all of your selfless dedication
Avare has appeared in six games for Louisville this season
and scored all six of his points on a pair of 3-pointers against Hartford
He scored four points as a redshirt freshman in 2014-15
including a free-throw near the end of regulation in the Cardinals' Elite Eight loss to Michigan State
has been Rick Pitino's friend and business partner since Pitino's time at the University of Kentucky
the younger Avare will play for former U of L assistant Dan McHale
NKyTribune
LOUISVILLE — There was 3:57 left in regulation during a tight Elite Eight game against Michigan State last season in Syracuse and a foul had left Louisville’s Wayne Blackshear with a bloody nose and unable to shoot the ensuing free throw
UofL coach Rick Pitino walked down the bench
who was in his usual spot near the end of the row
“He just kept coming and there was a little bit of thought in my ind that
I might come in and shoot the free throw,'” Avare recalled the other day
“But I didn’t think too much about it and then he said my name
did this really happen?’ and just ran out there
But definitely one of the best moments of my life.”
The diminutive guard from Lexington made the free throw and stayed in the game for a few more seconds before returning to his home away from home on the bench
Unless something more significant occurs during UofL’s season finale at Virginia Saturday night (8:30
that single free throw will remain the highlight of his three-year career with the Cardinals
a walk-on from Lexington Catholic High School whose father
“I didn’t really expect to play much coming here,” Avare says
“It was more about the experience and going up against those guys every day
I had no choice but to get better or I would just get embarrassed out there
having already earned a degree in economics and a perfect 4.0 GPA
Avare is moving on to Eastern Kentucky University
where he will receive a scholarship and have two years of eligibility remaining
who will major in sports administration at EKU
says he wasn’t ready to give up college basketball and figures he’ll have a chance to earn more playing time with the Colonels
Associate Director of EKU Sports Communication)
said NCAA regulations prohibit head coach Dan McHale or anyone on his coaching staff from commenting on Avare because the school hasn’t received paperwork on his transfer yet)
“I definitely think I’ll play more at EKU than I would at Louisville,” Avare says
“I’m really grateful to Coach McHale and it’s closer to home for me too
I’m just really looking forward to the opportunity to play more in that program.”
then played 27 minutes in eight games last year
This season he has logged 45 minutes in eight games
scoring six points to raise his career total to 10
more playing time won’t come easy because the Colonels (15-16) appear to be well-stocked with experienced and talented guards for the 2016-17 season
EKU returns three rising senior backcourt or wing players in Isaac McGlone
along with rising sophomore Dujuanta Weaver
McGlone has started 30 games; Hawkins was a second-team All-OVC selection; Babb-Harrison led the OVC in 3-point field goal percentatage at 45.3 and Weaver was the backup point guard
McHale has also signed two backcourt recruits in Asante Giat and Parker Chitty
When Avare enrolled at UofL after averaging 11.2 points and 4.3 assists as a senior at Lexington Catholic
the original plan was to stay just one year to build his body in the weight room and get some experience against major-college talent
Pitino and his teammates so much he decided to stick around awhile longer
“I felt like I really fit in here and Coach Pitino was gracious enough to give me another opportunity to keep growing and become a better basketball player,” Avare says
“I’m glad I stayed more years to get the experience of playing with these guys.”
Terry Rozier and other more skilled players
but despite the fact that he rarely sees action in games
Avare says he was treated like a starter when it came to Pitino’s coaching
“He doesn’t care if I am a walk-on or Russ Smith
“He gets on me every day and always wants the best for me and I’ll always maintain my relationship with him.”
Pitino says Avare is one of the most popular and admired players on the team
A sign of that respect is that on the eve of the Cards’ Senior Night game Tuesday against Georgia Tech
starting wing and leading scorer Damion Lee texted Pitino asking him to start Avare instead of him
“Dillon has been one of the team favorites,” Lee explained after UofL’s 56-53 win
“He’s just so generous and caring for everyone that I really wanted to try and honor him
pay homage to him by giving up my start.”
nor did Avare even get into the hard-fought game
which pretty much sums up his UofL “career,” if it can be called that
He’s hoping things will be different at EKU

A 300-year-old French comedy has been winning laughs and plaudits on its Chinese tour, proving that its themes of financial greed and the corrupting power of wealth still resonate across ages and cultures. And now Beijingers will have an opportunity to see it for themselves, as Moliere’s classic L’Avare (The Miser), comes to the Tianqiao Performing Arts Center this weekend (30 June and 1 July)
but hoards his wealth and lives in a constant state of suspicion and paranoia
the deceits and misunderstandings pile up with breathless speed
until all is finally resolved through a series of unlikely coincidences
French company La Comédie de Reims have given the play a fresh spin and a contemporary setting
becomes a warehouse filled with cardboard boxes
representing the uselessness of stockpiling wealth
Everyone in the play is obsessed with money
“The issue is not about a lack of money, it is more about the lack of monetary movement,” says director Ludovic Lagarde. “The function of money is to pay, and here it has lost this function. It seems to have become the target of a mortiferous worshipping
It’s not hard to see why audiences have been responding to this portrayal of what Lagarde calls
where money rules like a despot.” Fortunately both Moliere and Lagarde have not forgotten the humor
and fun with theatrical conventions sugaring the play’s serious message
L’Avare by Moliere plays at the Tianqiao Performing Arts Center at 7.30pm on Friday, June 30, and Saturday, July 1. Performances are in French, with Chinese and English subtitles. Tickets cost RMB 99 to RMB 580, and are available from the box office or online here

Bengaluru: Bengaluru South Lok Sabha member Tejasvi Surya was trolled and criticised by a section of social media users accusing him of relishing dosa and promoting an eatery in his constituency
when many parts of the city have been reeling under torrential rains and floods
the National President of BJP Yuva Morcha can be seen eating ‘Butter Masala Dosa’ and ‘Uppittu’ (Upma) at an eatery in Padmanabhanagar and praising its quality and taste

Is he in Bangalore?” she said in another tweet
Several Twitter users including actress and former Congress MP Ramya have shared Surya’s video online
