this state is responsible for 93% of the almonds of babacu coconut extracted in Brazil
Huge stacks of this product can be seen in front of their houses
expecting to be cracked and have the almonds extracted and traded
is a coconut cracker since five years of age
Even far from the activities due to health problems
but sometimes I still crack two or three kilos"
grandsons and great-grandsons with these earnings
The expertise is passed from generation to generation and the issue of gender is key
"The activity is exerted almost exclusively by women
The girls learn early how to deal with the coconuts by following their mothers
when they take them home to crack and extract the almond"
The coconut crackers are one of the 15 Brazilian ethnic identities recognized as traditional communities and
should have their way of life protected by the State
their major conquests mainly came from the Interstate Movement of Babacu Coconut Crackers - MIQCB
Their major achievement was the creation of a state law
and spread along several other municipalities
The Free Babacu acts entitled the women rights on the coconut trees
regardless of the land where they were found
the women alleged that the right to life came before the right to a private property
they surrounded the coconut trees with their children around
They said that each coconut tree felled was a mother who dropped together"
In the municipalities with the Free Babacu Act
the farmers allow the entrance of the women in their farms without any negotiation and they are not allowed to chop down the trees and use agrotoxins
Antunes explains that the legislation assures that the farmers maintain a minimum distance among the coconut trees and keep adult and young trees together
Burning whole coconuts was not allowed anymore
as well as chopping the coconut tree and coconut bunches
increasing the availability of the coconuts and decreasing the distance covered by the women
"All this organization increased the price of the almonds"
the Free Babacu Act did not arrive in Bacabal and handling babacu coconuts is decreasingly worthwhile
That region bets in the Standing Babacu Forest Project
aiming at organizing the babacu crackers to know and fight for their rights
including the implementation of the Free Babacu Act
The project also envisages the creation of the Babacu Fund
with financial resources to improve the life conditions of the agro-extractive families

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva Sunday flew over 53 cities declared under emergency due to rains
The head of state also called for the speedy approval of popular housing plans to assist the victims
Joining Lula were Ministers Flávio Dino (Justice) and Paulo Pimenta (Secom)
Lula focused on the northeastern State of Maranhão
where he visited a shelter in the municipality of Bacabal
He recalled that when he was 19 years old he spent several nights in such camps due to the flooding of his house in São Paulo
”I already lived in neighborhoods where the water rose up to a meter and a half and you woke up with cockroaches
That's why I know what this town goes through (...)
And there is no time to take out the furniture
I am going to be seven or eight days outside (Brazil) and I could not travel to another country without visiting the Brazilian states that are having problems due to the floods
And Maranhão is the state with the most difficult situation right now, said Lula who is to depart on a trip to China and the United Arab Emirates this week
On Easter Day and on the eve of his first 100 days in office for the third time
Lula asked for the union of governors
and society to carry out his popular housing solutions and avoid more disasters due to the rains
which have intensified since March and have so far left six dead and almost 36,000 families affected
of which 7,500 had to leave their homes due to flooding and landslides
The Minister of Cities [Jader Filho] is here listening to me
In the construction projects of new houses
we need to convince people that it is not possible to build a house in a place that we know will flood, Lula was quoted as saying by Agencia Brasil during a press conference with Maranhão Governor Carlos Brandão
In 2009 I came here in Bacabal in a flood
Roseana [Sarney] was governor and I was here in the same river
It is a demonstration that when you live near the river there is no way
you will suffer flooding when the rain is too much”
