Brazil’s Balneário Camboriú is on the riseBalneário Camboriú is known as Brazil’s Dubai for the rows of skyscrapers that line the beachfront It’s home to the three tallest buildings in Brazil But there’s another city that Balneário Camboriú seems to be increasingly emulating: Orlando Balneário Camboriú is home to the three tallest buildings in Brazil A group of schoolchildren wait outside the aquarium in Balneário Camboriú the tentacles of a gigantic orange octopus model hang over the top of the building It’s one of the largest aquariums in southern Brazil “It’s really incredible,” said Augusto Barbosa whose family traveled from the northeastern state of Espirito Santo The city has been called Brazil’s Dubai for its rows of skyscrapers that line the beachfront three of which are the tallest in the country Balneário Camboriú’s growth has changed the landscape for tourists and locals alike over the years The aquarium is just one of countless attractions across Balneário Camboriú. There’s a pirate adventure. An old car show. A dinosaur park And it’s all packed amid sky-high buildings into a 5-mile-long sandy half-moon stretch of coastline that is lit up at night It almost reminds you of something from the first series of “Star Wars” or a movie about a futuristic world Real estate agent Maria Eliza Veroneze Bayour says that’s the idea: a new world city has the highest square market real estate price in Brazil And it’s become a bit of a playground for the country’s rich with families buying vacation apartments along the shore We have a very warm winter and a summer with a lot of people,” Veroneze Bayour said This is what makes the price the highest in Brazil.” Tourism is key. Balneário Camboriú is one of the top 10 family destinations in the country Roughly 2 million tourists visit the city each year “We’ve been here three times,” said Diego Fischer who traveled with his family from Rio de Janeiro “But there are new things that weren’t here the last time Fischer said the growth of the city’s theme parks remind him of Orlando which he visited when he went to Disney World “It’s very similar with all of the different attractions and things to do,” he said And in fact, Balneário Camboriú is also home to the nearby Beto Carrero World Theme park development has exploded in recent years “In these five years, we opened 10 attractions. So, we opened two per year,” said Kiko Buerger, the CEO of Grupo Oceanic the company behind most of the city’s new attractions “Our population really looks for new innovation we visit everything we can outside and try try to bring the best quality as possible and [at an] affordable price.” The latest attraction, Space Adventure is a NASA-themed experience that takes you from Mission Control to the moon It boasts the largest collection of NASA items outside the United States But there’s a dark side to the city’s explosive growth Thaisa da Silva Alves is a delivery woman and Uber driver She was born and raised in Balneário Camboriú but she said that demographic is becoming increasingly rare you see people from neighboring states or anyplace else But it’s hard to find people who are born and raised here,” she said is because rising rental prices have far outpaced salaries even in working-class neighborhoods far from the glitzy high-rise buildings She now pays rent and has to share a home with several family members Da Silva sees modest homes and cinder block buildings against the backdrop of skyscrapers and there are more opportunities for work than in many other places But it all comes at a high cost: long hours and not enough reward no end is in sight for how high Balneário Camboriú will continue to rise delivered to your inbox every weekday morning Thanks to our sponsor The pair had planned to hold up a chemist's shop in Balneario Camboriu, in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, on September 14. But unknown to the hapless robbers, the mild-mannered-looking clerk was actually a martial arts expert.  While the crooks managed to ransack the shelves, when they tried to flee the clerk seized the opportunity to dish out some justice.    CCTV footage from inside the store shows him knock the first crook, a girl, to the ground with a flurry of punches. He then takes her partner in crime out before putting him in a headlock.   Finally, he straddles the crook's chest pinning his arms to the ground and punches him over and over again around the head until the clip ends. Military Police told local media that the male suspect was arrested but his female accomplice had fled by the time officers arrives. Later the clerk told police the pair had pretended to be armed and had threatened to shoot him if he did not hand over the cash in the till. After beating one of the crooks into submission the clerk discovered that his gun was actually a length of metal piping. Paramedics rushed the suspect to hospital where he was treated for multiple injuries and will be charged with armed robbery. Police are currently hunting his female accomplice, who escaped with around £30 in cash.  Major terror attack 'was just HOURS away' before it was foiled by the special forces and police:... Senna’s niece Lalalli, an artist and anthropologist, has been heavily involved in the tower’s design. It is a “symbol that inspires us to try to overcome our limitations,” she says. “The Senna Tower is a work of art of monumental proportions. The tower has this architectural form precisely to symbolise this heroic trajectory of overcoming towards our ideals and the manifestation of our profound potential.” As part of this inspiration there will be an immersive museum dedicated to the three-time Formula 1 champion who was tragically killed at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994 at the age of just 34. As far as we’re aware it’s the first time that a driver’s name and reputation has been used to market real estate, but car makers have been in on the action for some time. reveal a hard truth about his presidency: Back in a Latin America dominated by leftists he visited Brazil with designs on sparking a far-right resurgence that will give him friends closer to home Dubbed "Armani/Casa Residences by Embraed," the 78-storey building will be located in Balneário Camboriú a resort town in the state of Santa Caterina The Armani/Casa Residences will feature 113 luxury residential units The building will rise 270 metres above the coastline and occupy a 3,500-square-metre plot Argentina (AP) — Given the choice between a far-right convention to bash his enemies and a presidential summit to discuss regional trade policy Argentine President Javier Milei preferred the stadium packed with cheering fans The libertarian leader on Sunday strode onto the stage of Brazil's CPAC an extension of the conservative political action conference Milei rhythmically threw his hands up in the air as the audience hooted and pumped their fists Before delivering his go-to manifesto about the evils of socialism and virtues of the free market Milei gave a hearty hug to Brazil's hard-right former President Javier Bolsonaro who just days earlier was indicted by federal police in a scheme to embezzle Saudi diamonds “My friend Jair Bolsonaro is suffering judicial persecution," Milei said onstage from the conference in Brazil’s southern city of Balneario Camboriu In skipping the Mercosur trade bloc summit in Paraguay and publicly backing Bolsonaro — who also stands accused of attempting to subvert Brazil’s 2022 election result — Milei delivered another harsh rebuke to Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva escalating a risky feud with his country’s biggest trading partner Milei made no mention of Lula in his speech Sunday after months of branding the leftist leader a “communist," calling him “corrupt” and refusing to deal with him Local media was awash with reports citing Brazilian diplomats Sunday that they were considering the unprecedented move of pulling the Brazilian ambassador from Buenos Aires if Milei doubled down on his insults of the president while in Brazil your place is in prison!” Milei allowed himself a quiet smile before returning to his speech “The winds of change are blowing in the world,” he said “The ideas of impoverishing socialism have failed and people know it.” Milei's photo-ops with disgraced ex-President Bolsonaro — shaking hands in front of their respective national flags as though they were counterparts — marked the latest example of Milei’s provocative foreign policy courting the global spotlight through friendships with hard-right allies rather than following diplomatic convention Bolsonaro opened the Brazilian CPAC with a fiery speech declaring his desire to see former U.S President Donald Trump return to the White House next year He and Milei were then spotted together in a downtown hotel lobby littered with drained wine glasses watching Uruguay kick Brazil out of the 2024 Copa America Since the irascible Milei rode to power last December on a promise to fix Argentina's worst economic crisis in two decades relations between the long-time allies and commodity powerhouses have rapidly deteriorated The ideological enemies crossed paths for the first time at the Group of Seven summit last month in Italy where their efforts to avoid each other as much as physically possible grabbed local headlines As their war of words intensified in recent weeks Lula demanded an apology from Milei's government Experts say that mingling on the sidelines of the South American trade bloc meeting on Monday would have offered Milei a low-stakes opportunity to defuse tensions with Brazil Latin America’s biggest economy with a population of some 200 million Brazil buys nearly a sixth of Argentina’s exports supplies most of Argentina's auto industry and backs its neighbor's bids to get badly needed aid from International Monetary Fund Milei has doubled down on a foreign policy gamble that experts have criticized as misguided “He seems to be shooting himself in the foot,” Michael Shifter a scholar of Latin America at the Inter-American Dialogue in Washington “It's shocking and counterproductive for him to thumb his nose at Lula in this way because there could be a lot of cost for Argentina that could affect his ability to carry out his policies.” The president's ideologically driven strategy set off a political storm earlier this year in Spain the second-largest foreign investor in Argentina as Milei shunned meetings with the socialist government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and instead gave a similar speech lambasting socialism at a far-right rally organized by the country's Vox Party The snub spiraled into a diplomatic crisis between the historic allies when Milei called Sánchez's wife corrupt and Spain pulled its ambassador from Buenos Aires Despite five trips to the United States since taking office But he has hugged Trump at CPAC in Washington bonded over his love of free markets in Texas with billionaire Tesla executive Elon Musk and met top tech CEOs in Silicon Valley “He wants to present himself as a rock star of international politics which does generate admiration in some sectors of Argentina,” said Fabio Rodriguez director at Buenos Aires-based consultancy M&R Asociados “But already polls indicate that this may be changing that people are seeing this as a liability feeling abandoned in the sense that their president spends his time on tour while things are not improving on a daily basis.” where annual inflation help Israel achieve its war aims of defeating Hamas and freeing hostages held in Gaza also calls for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to move to Gaza's south — which would likely lead to their then imposed a blockade on the territory along with Egypt Capturing and potentially occupying the territory again for an indefinite period would not only further dash hopes for Palestinian statehood it would embed Israel inside a population that is deeply hostile to it and raise questions about how Israel plans to govern the territory especially at a time when it is considering how to implement of it into an uninhabitable moonscape The war began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages Israel’s offensive has killed more than 52,000 people in Gaza who do not distinguish between combatants and civilians in their count The Israeli officials said the plan included the “capturing of the strip and the holding of territories.” The plan would also seek to prevent Hamas from distributing humanitarian aid a role that Israel says strengthens the group's rule in Gaza It also accuses Hamas of keeping the aid for itself Aid workers deny there is a significant diversion of aid to militants The officials said Israel was in touch with several countries about Trump's plan to take over Gaza and relocate its population under what Israel has termed “voluntary emigration." That proposal has drawn widespread condemnation and rights groups have warned it could be a war crime under international law Israel has been trying to ratchet up pressure on Hamas to get the group to agree to its terms in the ceasefire negotiations But the measures do not appear to have moved Hamas away from its negotiating positions The previous ceasefire was meant to lead the sides to negotiate an end to the war Israel says it won’t agree to end the war until Hamas' governing and military capabilities are dismantled has sought an agreement that winds down the war without agreeing to disarm Israel's expansion announcement angered families of hostages who fear that any extension of the conflict endangers their loved ones urged Israel's decision-makers to prioritize the hostages and secure a deal quickly called on soldiers “not to report for reserve duty for moral and ethical reasons." Some reservists have indicated they will refuse to serve in a war they increasingly view as politically motivated The Israeli officials did not disclose details on how the plan seeks to prevent Hamas from involvement in aid distribution They said the ministers had approved “the option of aid distribution," without elaborating According to a memo circulated among aid groups and seen by The Associated Press Israel told the United Nations that it will use private security companies to control aid distribution in Gaza said it would not participate in the plan as presented The memo summarized a meeting between the Israeli defense body in charge of coordinating aid to Gaza It was written by a group briefed on the meeting and sent to aid organizations on Sunday all aid will enter Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing and aid parcels will be distributed directly to people on the day of entry Their contents were unclear as was how many people will have access to the aid Some 500 trucks entered Gaza every day before the war The memo said the aid will be distributed at logistics hubs which will be run by private security companies The memo said that facial recognition will be used to identify Palestinians at the hubs and text message alerts will notify people in the area that they can collect aid said the plan would leave large parts of the population It said the plan “appears designed to reinforce control over life-sustaining items as a pressure tactic – as part of a military strategy.” Aid groups have said they are opposed to using any armed or uniformed personnel to distribute aid that could potentially intimidate Palestinians or put them at risk Israeli officials “want to manipulate and militarize all aid to civilians forcing us to deliver supplies through hubs designed by the Israeli military once the government agrees to re-open crossings,” the Jan Egeland Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council government has voiced clear support for the plan but it’s unclear who would provide funding for the private military companies or the aid Embassy in Jerusalem did not immediately respond to a request for comment the AP obtained notes summarizing various Israeli proposals on aid distribution and aid groups’ concerns about them the groups expressed fears that Palestinians would be required to retrieve aid from a small number of sites forcing families to move to get assistance and also putting their safety at risk if large crowds gathered at the sites Israeli strikes across Gaza continued overnight killing at least 17 people in northern Gaza Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiya and among the dead were eight women and children Associated Press reporter Wafaa Shurafa in Deir al-Balah Follow AP’s war coverage at urban population growth and degradation of municipal water supplies has increased drinking water treatment costs Natural solutions to restore source watersheds can reverse this trend and may be a cost-effective approach for cities to reduce treatment costs while enhancing supply resiliency and protecting biodiversity Around the world there are a growing number of contractual arrangements—sometimes called “water funds”—between municipal water companies and upstream land owners, aimed at improving source water quality and quantity. Yet the potential for cost-effective watershed protection is much larger Mobilizing the investments needed to realize this potential hinges in part on the business case for water users—that is the competitiveness of watershed conservation programs with conventional engineering solutions Balneário Camboriú in Santa Catarina state is a famous beach destination in southeastern Brazil that attracts increasing numbers of both domestic and international visitors As a result of the booming tourism and civil construction sectors that now dominate the local economy the combined population of Balneário Camboriú and neighboring Camboriú city now swells to more than 800,000 during the summer high season Both municipalities count on the Camboriú River as a reliable low-cost source of drinking water supply especially during the summer tourist high season EMASA (which supplies both municipalities) evaluated options for securing sufficient future water supply These include storing water in the watershed through flooding of native forest and agricultural lands; transferring water from a neighboring watershed characterized by substantially lower water quality that would necessitate advanced treatment; and conserving and restoring natural lands in the Camboriú watershed to maintain the high-quality water supply historically provided by the Camboriú River “This river is the only supply that we have to Camboriú and Balneário Camboriú municipalities so it’s important that EMASA invest in actions to preserve this resource to last more time and with a better quality." Because of the high projected costs of the first two options and the promising results of initial feasibility assessments of the third EMASA decided to first invest in protecting remaining natural forests and restoring degraded areas with high sediment loading to reduce treatment water losses and costs Should this prove insufficient to achieve a reliable water supply investments in the other two grey infrastructure options will need to be considered To implement the watershed conservation strategy in 2013 EMASA created the Camboriú Payments for Watershed Service (PWS) project in partnership with The Nature Conservancy the municipalities of Balneário Camboriú and Camboriú the State Public Services and Sanitation Regulatory Agency (ARESC) the National Water Agency (ANA) and the Santa Catarina State’s Environmental Information and Hydrometeorology Center (EPAGRI-CIRAM) This new study models land change in the watershed with and without the PWS program and provides a template for how to assess the business case of other similar programs It also highlights the fact that the business case for a given watershed conservation program for a particular investor can depend on the broader social-economic case and on the ability to forge institutional arrangements that allow for internalizing the value of the multiple benefits watershed conservation produces for diverse stakeholders The finding that co-benefits accrue to stakeholders beyond EMASA alone built the argument for the incorporation of watershed conservation costs into the water tariff cost composition Such a financial mechanism represents a groundbreaking shift in the concept of “core business” in the sanitation sector and projects a brighter future for water security in Brazil and Latin America Nossos serviços estão apresentando instabilidade no momento Algumas informações podem não estar disponíveis 2024 10h00 AM | Last Updated: February 27 there were 59.6 million occupied housing units in the country the majority of the population (84.8%) lived in this type of residence The second most common type found was apartments a housing unit category in which 12.5% of the population lived These pieces of information were published today (23) by the IBGE in the release “2022 Census: Characteristics of Housing Units - Results from the universe”. The release event in partnership with Diadema City Hall and the Great ABC Intermunicipal Consortium Housing units of the “closed street or condominium house” type which in 2010 housed 1.6% of persons residing in Brazil the types “house” and “closed street or condominium houses” brought together 87.2% of the population The broad predominance of houses among the types of housing units had already been recorded in previous Population Censuses as well as the tendency for the proportion of apartments to increase: in 2000 7.6% of the population lived in this type of housing unit a number that rose to 8 .5% in 2010 to reach 12.5% registered in 2022 explains that this increase is significant and national being registered in all the Major Regions of the country although it is more typical of big urban centers “This verticalization is a response to the population density in municipalities mainly in Metropolitan Areas and in the centers of bigger cities,” he states A group of 494 thousand persons (0.2% of the population) lived in housing units of the “boarding house or tenement” type The other two categories housed less than 0.1% of the population: “Indigenous housing without walls or maloca” and “degraded or unfinished permanent residential structure” with 81 thousand persons.Piauí has the highest proportion of persons in houses; Federal District leads in apartmentsComparing the 2010 Census with the 2022 Census the proportion of the population living in an apartment increased in all Major Regions The highest percentage is in the Southeast (16.7%) The North records the lowest figure (5.2%).Among the Federation Units (UF) Piauí had the highest proportion of the population residing in housing units classified as "houses" (95.6%) closely followed by Tocantins (95.3%) and Maranhão (95.1% ) The lowest was in the Federal District (66.14%) led the ranking of percentage of the population residing in apartments (28.7%) while Tocantins (2.5%) had the lowest proportion in this matter. The highest occurrence of houses in a closed street or in a condominium was recorded in Rio de Janeiro (5.9%) Espírito Santo (0.5%) had the lowest percentage.Santos (SP) Balneário Camboriú (SC) and São Caetano do Sul (SP) are the only municipalities with a predominance of apartment dwellersDespite registering an expansion of apartment-type housing units but with peculiar and different characteristics One of these municipalities is Santos (SP) the only one on the list in the 2010 Census when 57.8% of the population lived in apartments This percentage increased to 63.4% in 2022 “It is a municipality with a large part of its area on an island where the urban part is already fully occupied Part of what could be the outskirts and less dense regions of Santos are in neighboring municipalities” Perez.Balneário Camboriú (SC) follows a different dynamic With intense real estate activity in recent years and being an important tourist destination in the South region the municipality of Santa Catarina saw the percentage of residents in apartments jump from 48.9% to 57.2% from the 2010 Census to the 2022 Census The north coast of Santa Catarina has attracted attention due to the large number of skyscrapers built recently "It's a trend in high-valued coastal areas: a densification that generates verticalization to attract more people who want to be close to the beaches" explains the researcher.São Caetano do Sul (SP) completes the list with a medium-sized population and is very much part of the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo it has similar characteristics to the area of the so-called Expanded Center of São Paulo: very dense and has considerable verticalization” Municipalities with the highest percentage of apartments general water distribution network was the main form of water supply for 82.9% of residentsToday's release of the 2022 Census also presents results regarding the main form of water supply to housing units in Brazil The general distribution network appeared in 60.8 million housing units This percentage is higher than the occurrence of the option recorded in the 2010 Population Census (81.5%) despite changes made to the questionnaire to make the classification stricter.Deep or artesian wells were the second main form of supply appearing in housing units representing 9.0% of the population considered adequate for monitoring purposes of the National Basic Sanitation Plan (PLANSAB) served 96.9% of the population in 2022.With a lower national occurrence are water tanker trucks (1.0%) A set of 0.6% of the population mainly used forms of supply that did not fit into the options in the questionnaire.2022 Census: regional differences in water supplyThe general network was the main form of water supply in all regions While in the Southeast the percentage was 91.0% was the region with the highest proportions of the population using deep or artesian wells (24.3%) and shallow or phreatic wells (11.8%).The Northeast had the highest proportions of the "water tanker" (3.5%) and "stored rainwater" (1.8%) forms of supply while the North Region had the highest proportion of the "Rivers only São Paulo (95.6%) and the Federal District (92.8%) had more than 90% of residents in housing units with a general water supply network as their main supply form Rondônia (45.3%) and Amapá (43.7%) did not reach 50%.“Among the municipalities” “there are regional peculiarities that significantly change the logic of  water supply service” 50% or more of the population was supplied mainly by the general network and in 5,157 municipalities the general network was the predominant form of water supply one of the regional peculiarities pointed out by the researcher is in the “water tanker” aspect it was the predominant form of supply in 68 Brazilian municipalities © 2018 IBGE - Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística Nós utilizamos cookies para melhorar sua experiência de navegação no portal. ShareSaveListsForget The Bossa Nova, Brazil Is Now The Country Of Electronic MusicByAnderson Antunes you may think of it as the South American birthplace of music genres like the samba or bossa nova Brazil has become one of the meccas of electronic music too  A title that it now shares with the likes of Germany where e-music is not only a controversial topic (is it a form of art or not?) but also big business According to a study commissioned by the organizers of the Rio Music Conference the largest gathering of e-music and entertainment in the Southern Hemisphere which is taking place this month in Rio de Janeiro ticket vendors collected $515 million for electronic music events in 2011 The study also shows that the e-music segment in Brazil reached an audience of 19.5 million people last year who spent another $626 million on accommodation The growing e-music industry in the country of Carnival is also good news for international DJs such as David Guetta all of whom have performed  there recently the collective sum paid to DJs who performed in Brazil in 2011 was $57.2 million But why has Brazil become such a hotspot for e-music professionals In spite of its population's predilection for late-night dance parties the country's sizzling economy has a lot to do with it Most of the bash-goers who attend e-music events in Brazil are twenty or thirty-something middle-class citizens who don't mind paying a fairly high price for fancy fare (tickets for a David Guetta concert held in Sao Paulo last month were sold for up to $600 per person) Add to this the fact that nearly 40 million people have joined Brazil's middle class since 2003 The club's futuristic interior was designed by Isay Weinfeld one of Sao Paulo's most sought-after architects and it includes a 20 sq-meter panel by the Campana brothers Those who favor the slightly grimier, more underground end of the clubbing spectrum are habitués of the D-Edge club Daft Punk decor and doors that stay open until noon D-Edge -- which was opened in 2003 -- became the ultimate clubbing address for the city's discerning e-music aficionados which is actually located in the division between Balneario Camboriu and its neighboring city of Itajai Warung consistently delivers something more refined -- hosting residencies from the world's biggest underground club brands is already considering the possibility of investing there as well Electronic music has been taking over the hearts and minds of youths all over the world for some time now. Originating over 30 years ago in urban Chicago and Detroit the concept was designed to reassemble mundane disco tracks and give them greater appeal to those tired of listening to music about heartbreak and looking to feel liberated as an individual In Brazil -- as the numbers prove -- the party's just begun Published: Invalid Date A BRAZILIAN model faces a year in jail after she was arrested and bundled into a police van while walking her dogs topless She has now slammed double standards in Brazil where women are penalised and men are not was arrested this year for walking her dogs down a busy beachside street topless with just a t-shirt tied around the waistband of her shorts the blonde amazed beachgoers in Balneario Camboriu with her eye-popping show as she strolled along the coastal road with two dogs on leads Local media reported that she was arrested by police and charged with indecent exposure after the stroll on Saturday Photos show her being handcuffed by two officers before she was taken to a nearby police station Werner also claims the police violated her due process rights by not allowing her to place a phone call to her family or a lawyer The 37-year-old believes Brazil is too uptight and she has never before experienced a problem according to Brazilian outlet G1 She said: “Unfortunately in my country, even though the Constitution ensures gender equality, in practice this does not happen, I cannot have the same freedom and I feel coerced into doing so by this system and the repressive interpretation of the law.” a businesswoman who also has her own bikini line said that she’s traveled all over the world and has never before had any problems being topless and was shocked when she was detained in the South American country it is a completely normal practice,” she said “A woman’s body is not objectified and hypersexualized.” The Santa Catarina state prosecutor’s office is handling the case and has offered her a plea deal but Werner who has since moved from Balneário Camboriú Her attorney said she was not notified of the hearing and is requesting a new date Werner said that the whole incident is blowing up online where videos of her strolling topless are swirling around the web the abuse of authority and judgment by society demonstrates how the interpretation of the law itself reflects gender conduct dictated by patriarchal in relation to the control of female bodies."
