Payton Talbott is one of the hottest prospects in the UFC today and has so far delivered inside the octagon with a trio of finishes. Raoni Barcelos, a bantamweight veteran of 11 UFC bouts, vows to derail that hype train Saturday at UFC 311
Barcelos and Talbott meet on the preliminary portion of the pay-per-view
and the Brazilian is shocked that he’s such a massive underdog against the much younger fighter in Los Angeles
“No disrespect to those who have fought [Talbott]
but he hasn’t been tested yet,” Barcelos told MMA Fighting
I believe my game and what we’re preparing to do
so I think everybody’s going to be surprised.”
“That has motivated me to be here and show a good work,” Barcelos said
To be overlooked and underestimated after everything I’ve done in MMA
This kid has three fights in the UFC so it’s kind of surreal
This is my motivation to be there and give my best to come out with the win for Brazil
Talbott being the biggest favorite of the night doesn’t necessarily mean he’s also buying the hype
but I had three or four UFC fights already and was asking for ranked opponents,” Barcelos said
I got to the ranking after beating Said [Nurmagomedov] and left quickly
with a game that can change the fight entirely
I think he has to be worried about me because I’m not a kid,” he continued
I’m the one that can be relaxed because I have no pressure over me
I’m going there to have fun and do a good job.”
With his opponent entering UFC 311 on two knockouts and one submission since joining the promotion through Dana White’s Contender Series
Barcelos looks at his own grappling background as key to shock the MMA world
“It’s definitely a submission,” Barcelos said of how he wins Saturday
It makes no sense to trade with a striker that is knocking everybody out
that’s where I’ll see the opening and attack
I’m motivated to go there and do a good job.”

Payton Talbott was thought of as almost an insurmountable favorite heading into his fight with Raoni Barcelos at UFC 311. The talented 26-year-old bantamweight dominated his previous three UFC outings, but at UFC 311

Most of the attention leading up to the UFC's first Pay-Per-View event of the year was understandably focused on the card's bantamweight and lightweight title bouts
but Talbott was arguably the fighter that received the biggest promotional push from the organization outside of those main and co-main event matchups

Longtime UFC veteran Barcelos represented a significant step up in competition for the 26-year-old
and the Brazilian wasted little time before he decided to test Talbott's takedown defense and skills on the mat

– Payton Talbott might have been thinking about getting into the top five some day
Talbott (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) on Saturday suffered a top-five biggest upset loss in UFC history when he was dominated by Raoni Barcelos (19-5 MMA, 8-4 UFC) for a unanimous decision to close out the preliminary card at UFC 311 at Intuit Dome
Talbott was unbeaten coming into the bantamweight bout and was a betting favorite of around -1150 in the fight
The upsets above him in the pecking order: Holly Holm over Ronda Rousey (-1600)
Shana Dobson over Mariya Agapova (-1400) and Matt Serra over Georges St-Pierre (-1200)
those odds in Talbott's favor never should have been that high to begin with
The whole thing put a chip on his shoulder
that really motivated me," Barcelos said after his win
"It really drove me because I have such a long history in the sport
I've done so much in the sport that people may not even realize
and you're just so disrespectful (with those odds)
So that really made me go in there harder to get this one
including things in my camp that I wouldn't ordinarily do because I wanted to prove to everyone that these odds are just completely insane
Barcelos came to the UFC in 2018 after a run as RFA's featherweight champion
He won his first five fights in the promotion
But then he went on a rough run of four losses in five fights – including a knockout loss two years ato to UFC 311 title challenger Umar Nurmagomedov
But now the Brazilian has back-to-back wins – a submission win on the road in Mexico and Saturday's monumental upset of Talbott
it was hard seeing a lot of people not believing in me
A lot of people were saying a lot of things online," Barcelos said
so there's no reason for me to stand up with him
I needed to go in there and take him down and control him

Ultimately, he slumped to a lopsided 30-27, 30-27, 30-26 unanimous decision defeat to Raoni Barcelos
Barcelos threatened to pull off a big upset from the very first bell
The Brazilian scored an early takedown and immediately began locking up a rear-naked choke
Talbott did well to stay composed during his first taste of MMA adversity
but he failed to land any significant strikes and was dominated on the floor for nearly all of the five-minute frame
Barcelos continued to show he was the more competent grappler in the second stanza

Talbott’s poor performance topped off a tough fight week, which included a viral clash with Merab Dvalishvili
The bantamweight king remembered Talbott calling him ‘dumber than a box of rocks’ during an interview with ESPN before UFC 303 last June – and ‘The Machine’ let him have it when they bumped into each other
Dvalishvili showed footage of the two bantamweights crossing paths
They appeared to wish each other luck before things got awkward as the Georgian fighter brought up old trash talk
“Next time don’t talk trash about me,” Dvalishvili hollered at Talbott
but they appeared to squash the beef before shaking hands and moving on
it seems Talbott has lots of work to do before he can mention Dvalishvili’s name again

UFC 311 is rumored to take place in Los Angeles
but an official location is yet to be announced
Talbott, 9-0 in just three years as a professional fighter, has made a major impact so far in the 135-pound division with a trio of UFC wins, capped off by back-to-back bonus-winning stoppages of Cameron Saaiman and Yanis Ghemmouri in 2024
Barcelos (18-5) tapped Cristian Quinonez in his most recent appearance this past February to rebound from defeats to Umar Nurmagomedov and Kyler Phillips

Now 9-0, Talbott was hyped enough for his UFC debut in November 2023. His stock skyrocketed even higher with dominant wins over Cameron Saaiman and Yanis Ghemmouri

Talbott gears up to face his stiffest test yet in Raoni Barcelos, a bantamweight mainstay who acted as a stepping stone on Umar Nurmagomedov’s path to UFC gold
It could soon be time for Talbott to take this same journey
Barcelos debuted in the UFC in 2018, defeating future The Ultimate Fighter Season 31 winner Kurt Holobaugh by uppercut in the first round
Barcelos then appeared on the The Ultimate Fighter Season 28 finale prelims, where he defeated Chris Gutierrez. Gutierrez would go on to win his next eight fights, including a stunning knee knockout over former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar
Barcelos’ best-aged victory is his unanimous decision over Said Nurmagomedov, who has gone 5-1 in the UFC since. This, along with Barcelos’ barn-burner performance against Timur Valiev
has put Barcelos in high regard as one of the most underrated
His UFC career has only been marred by shutout losses to Victor Henry and Kyler Phillips, as well as his only knockout loss at the hands of Nurmagomedov in January 2023. Talbott will get the chance to hand Barcelos a second knockout defeat at UFC 311

The veteran Barcelos had a chip on his shoulder entering this fight
as he was a massive underdog against Talbott
who has only been fighting professionally since 2021
Talbott was as high as a -1400 favorite on some sportsbooks
with Barcelos coming in around +800 as the underdog
Those odds gave Barcelos an 11 percent chance to win the fight
Barcelos took Talbott down early and immediately went to work with his grappling to slow the less experienced fighter
Though Talbott’s submission defense held up
with Barcelos controlling the action on the ground and winning a clear 10-9 after the first five minutes
but this time Talbott was able to avoid any significant damage on the ground and get the fight back to the feet
Talbott then found success with his striking as the two battered each other during some thrilling exchanges

Barcelos used his post-fight promo time to remind the oddsmakers not to doubt him and reasserted himself as a contender at 135 pounds

but Barcelos scored a takedown with 40 seconds to go to slow the momentum

UFC 311 opened with ranked veteran Tagir Ulanbekov facing off with unbeaten Dana White’s Contender Series grad Clayton Carpenter in a competitive battle in the flyweight division
Ulanbekov leaned on his grappling throughout the contest
controlling large portions of the opening frame from top position
landing solid shots before finding a similar position
but less success in the back half of the second and third
Carpenter had his moments off his back in the first and on top in the second
but was never able to build enough consistent
significant momentum to truly threaten the Top 15 fixture
with all three judges scoring the fight in favor of the Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov disciple
Ulanbekov has now won three straight and five of six inside the Octagon
cementing his place in the rankings and adding him to the growing list of streaking talents looking to make waves in the 125-pound ranks in 2025
In his first full-camp appearance inside the Octagon, Benardo Sopaj showed he’s a promising addition to the bantamweight division, out-working TUF winner Ricky Turcios to register his first UFC victory
The 24-year-old from Albania showed elements of a complete skill set
and having positive moments in the grappling interactions as well
Turcios was dogged in his pursuit of his young foe
pressing from the outset and showing greater offensive urgency than he had in any previous outings
but was simply unable to manufacture enough meaningful offense to swing things in his favor
but the Houston native managed to survive and make it to the final horn
Sopaj swept the scorecards, advancing to 12-3 with the victory, while Turcios fell to 12-4 with his second straight loss and third defeat in his last four fights.Main Card Results | Official Scorecards
Muin Gafurov carried over the form that produced his first UFC win last year on Saturday, handing Rinya Nakamura the first loss of his professional career
The experienced hand from Tajikistan stung Nakamura in both the first and second rounds
taking advantage of his tendency to keep his head on the center line by connecting with heavy overhand blows that put the unbeaten Japanese prospect on the deck
backing him up with a side kick to the body
and generally dominating the striking exchanges
While Nakamura had a brief period of control on the canvas in the third
this was an outstanding performance from Gafurov from the jump
After dropping his first two UFC appearances
the 28-year-old has now earned consecutive victories to establish himself as a dark horse in the talent-rich bantamweight division
Ailin Perez and Karol Rosa continued the trend of fights going the full allotted time
tactical scrap in the bantamweight division to close out the UFC 311 early prelims
Perez did well to utilize her wrestling at opportune times
changing levels and putting Rosa on the deck in both the first and second
neutralizing the pressure the Brazilian was beginning to apply each time
keeping things standing and throwing with more force and intent
but never getting close to creating a finishing opportunity.
registering her fifth straight UFC victory
The charismatic Argentine is the owner of the longest active winning streak in the division
and should get another opportunity against a Top 10 opponent next time out after out-working the tenured Brazilian on Saturday night in Los Angeles

Grant Dawson spoiled Diego Ferreira's 40th birthday
grinding out the Fortis MMA representative to secure his third straight victory and the biggest win of his career to date
“KGD” controlled the grappling entanglements throughout the bout
working back into effective positions in the spare moments when Ferreira attacked there and keeping the Brazilian pinned to the canvas whenever he initiated
with Dawson quickly working back into the clinch and returning Ferreira to the mat
That’s now three straight for the American Top Team representative Dawson
and six wins in his last seven appearances
having continually improved the efficiency of his game
and should get a chance to re-enter the Top 15 at some point later in the year
Bogdan Guskov had to navigate some rough terrain early in the fight, but once he cleared the choppy seas, he dominated, securing a second-round finish over late replacement Billy Elekana to end the run of decisions at UFC 311
taking him down and climbing onto his back
locking in a body triangle and staying there
But Guskov got free and dominated the final stretch of the first
locking up a choke where Elekana was saved by the horn
He remained aggressive in the second and took the fight to the fading newcomer
punishing him with strikes before clamping onto a choke and drawing out the tap
That’s now three straight wins and three straight finishes for the ascending light heavyweight from Uzbekistan
but Guskov dealt with it well and showed his class by cranking up the pressure and collecting the finish in the second
Welcome to the UFC, Azamat Bekoev
The American Top Team representative and former LFA champion registered a first-round knockout win over Zachary Reese
finishing the DWCS graduate with heavy shots from inside his guard
The power generated by Bekoev while postured up was incredible
and should put everyone in the division on notice
Bekoev has been chomping at the bit for a UFC opportunity and made the absolute most of this short-notice fight
pushing his winning streak to seven while advancing his record to 19-3 overall
Middleweight has been electric out of the gates to start 2025 and Bekoev just announced his presence as one to watch going forward
Veteran Raoni Barcelos handed Payton Talbott the first loss of his professional career
leaning on his grappling and superior control to dominate the fight on the canvas
The 38-year-old Brazilian wisely took Talbott down early and often
advancing positions and threatening with chokes
roughing him up with strikes when the time called for it
While Talbott did well at times to work to his feet and landed some solid strikes when the two opted to stand and trade
Barcelos was always quick to get him back on the canvas
That’s now consecutive wins over quality prospects for the tenured bantamweight
who moved to 8-4 inside the Octagon with the win
this is a critical learning experience in the early days of his UFC run
but surely not the last we hear of the promising

Raoni Barcelos derailed the Payton Talbott hype train, and it wasn’t particularly close.
The 37-year-old Brazilian won a unanimous decision over the 26-year-old American, despite being the biggest betting underdog on the entire UFC 311 card.
Talbott was a 12-to-1 favourite and regarded as a top prospect in the bantamweight division after starting his mixed martial arts career 9-0.
Barcelos got off to a strong start in the cage Saturday at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif. on Saturday by taking Talbott to the ground early and often, putting his wrestling to use throughout the 15-minute preliminary bout and landing multiple takedowns in all three rounds.
Talbott earned a UFC contract through Dana White’s Contender’s Series in 2023 and picked up three consecutive highlight finishes that contributed to his potential being highlighted this week.
None of that mattered to Barcelos, however, and the veteran 135-pounder frequently took mount and back control and registered multple submission attempts.
Talbott was one of three unbeaten fighters who competed on the UFC 311 preliminary card and none emerged with their unblemished records intact.
Touted Japanese wrestler Rinya Nakamura fell to 9-1 after being upset by Muin Gafurov, a former LFA titleholder, who’s now riding a two-fight winning streak after beginning his UFC career 0-2
Khabib Nurmagomedov, the retired former UFC lightweight champion, made his first appearance of the evening in his role as coach and cornerman when Tagir Ulanbekov became the first person to defeat Clayton Carpenter in the opening bout of the night.
Ulanbekov was one of three Khabib pupils at UFC 311. His teammates Islam Makhachev and Umar Nurmagomedov were featured at the top of the card in the main and co-main events, taking on Renato Moicano and Merab Dvalishvili, respectively.
The 33-year-old from Dagestan was ranked as the No. 11 contender in the flyweight division prior to improving to 16-2 in MMA and said in his post-fight interview he has his sights set on the current 125-pound champion, Alexandre Pantoja. Ulanbekov is now 5-1 at the UFC level and has taken down his opponent in all six of his Octagon appearances.
In other preliminary action, Azamat Bekoev had a successful UFC debut and put himself on the map in the UFC’s middleweight division with a first-round knockout of Zachary Reese.
Bekoev was the reigning LFA champion when he got the call to replace Sedriques Dumas earlier this week and he made quick work of Reese, raining down nasty ground-and-pound strikes that rendered Reese unconscious.
Bogdan Guskov extended his winning streak at 205 pounds by tapping out short-notice replacement opponent Billy Elekana twice but only getting credit for one.
Elekana had early success with a takedown but was unable to capitalize on his positional advantage. At the end of the opening round, Guskov locked in a choke and Elekana tapped out except it happened after the round ended so the fight went to Round 2.
Guskov, who was originally slated to Johnny Walker, began battering Elekana along the fence with punches and eventually sunk in another choke that resulted in another Elekana tap. This time it was official and Guskov extended his finishing streak to three.
Walker announced last weekend he sustained an unspecified “bad injury” in training that led to his withdrawal.
Grant Dawson was not ranked in the top 15 at 155 pounds heading into Saturday’s action but that could soon change after Dawson picked up the biggest win over his UFC career to date.
Dawson swept the scorecards and snapped Carlos Diego Ferreira’s hot streak with a thorough three-round showing. The 30-year-old Dawson is now 11-1-1 since debuting in the UFC in 2019.
Diego Ferreira, 40, has been one of the more unheralded veterans in the deep lightweight division and had knocked out Mateusz Rebecki and Michael Johnson in his previous two bouts.
Bernardo Sopaj rebounded from a brutal knockout loss he suffered in his UFC debut more than 10 months ago, winning a unanimous decision over Ricky Turcios.
The 24-year-old from Sweden went back to the drawing board after being put out cold by a Vinicius Oliveira flying knee with a more reserved and methodical approach in his second UFC appearance. Sopaj landed fewer total strikes than Turcios in the 15-minute bout but his were deemed more effective.
Turcios is a past winner of The Ultimate Fighter but has lost three of his past four outings dating back to 2021.

Barcelos will be making his 12th UFC appearance but has lost four of his last six fights
Barcelos prediction and preview in the bantamweight division tonight
Odds via DraftKings as of Friday night
Crowdsourced Projections: Payton Talbott (87.8%)
Talbott has potentially overtaken Bo Nickal as the most exciting prospect in the UFC
The undefeated 26-year-old striker has drawn comparison to Sean O’Malley with his size for 135 pounds
He lands 8.4 significant strikes per minute
Talbott’s moneyline will close north of -1000 for the second consecutive fight
but Raoni Barcelos is far more decorated than recent opponent Yanis Ghemmouri
including Brazilian national wrestling and Nogi grappling titles
but he’s 37 years old and at a severe size (3-inch discrepancy in height and reach) and speed disadvantage in this matchup
If Barcelos can get the fight to the ground
he could potentially test Talbott’s submission defense
but that’s the only way I see the Brazilian pulling off a significant upset
when there is at least a decade in age between MMA opponents
the younger fighters have won 72.3% of the time at average odds of -140 (58.5% implied)
it’s on Talbott to win by decision (projected +267
listed +320) or the fight to go to decision (projected +210
given the age discrepancy and Talbott’s potential to perform as a statistical outlier

As the digital marketing landscape rapidly evolves
the ability to leverage effective first-party audience signals has become crucial for advertisers to deliver personalized and relevant ad experiences

consolidating these audience signals to active advertising campaigns while protecting customer privacy often requires significant technical resources and expertise

Many Tealium customers want to activate their audience segments by running campaigns on Amazon Ads
Tealium wanted to simplify the process of activating audience segments
so it built an integrated connector solution on Tealium’s AudienceStream
The connector uses AMC Audience Management APIs to access and stream audiences into AMC and ADSP
A brand can follow Tealium’s setup workflow to launch this connector from Tealium’s AudienceStream
configure it with a few clicks to Amazon Ads and start streaming their audience segments from Tealium’s platform into Amazon Ads (AMC and ADSP)
This approach makes it easy for brands to use their first-party audience segments for optimizing their audience strategy to achieve Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) with Amazon Ads that are closer to their business outcomes associated with campaigns running on Amazon Ads
Barcelo Hotel Group needed to improve the efficiency of their advertising campaigns
By using their first-party signals to connect content on Amazon Ads to an advertiser’s off-Amazon customer interactions
Barcelo could provide an omni-channel perspective on attributes
They also understood the limitations they would face in the future with third-party cookie deprecation
Since Barcelo already had their audience signals in Telium’s CDP
Barcelo’s marketing team was able to configure the Tealium connector and Amazon Ads within minutes
which historically could take them weeks to setup
Activation Associate Manager from Barcelo’s media agency Jakala
after activating the audience segment on Amazon Ads
they measured a 23% increase in incremental revenue and a 21% improvement in efficiency for the consideration phase of their campaign
The result Barcelo Hotel Group found was that linking their audiences directly from Tealium’s platform to AMC allowed them to understand their users and implement audience strategies focused on the consideration layer of the advertising funnel generating a more robust customer journey
“Once the use case was defined with the different stakeholders
integrating our first-party data through Tealium’s AudienceStream with AMC has been very simple
Thanks to the native integrations of Tealium with AMC
we did not require the help from our front-end developers to set it up
since the documentation and support provided by Tealium and AMC resolved all doubts
and in a matter of minutes we were able to configure

Talbott has superstar written all over him
The 26-year-old earned his way to the UFC via The Contender Series and he’s dazzled throughout his first three fights
He’s gone 3-0 with three finishes and his last fight took less than 20 seconds
This is a big step up in competition so it’ll be interesting to see how he does
Payton Talbott is the biggest betting favorite on the card coming in at -1200 at the time of writing this
nobody is giving Raoni Barcelos a chance in this one
Is it a mistake to give him no chance given his history inside the octagon
I personally don’t think the odds should be that lopsided
but I also don’t see Barcelos winning this fight
I think you’ll see a big difference in the speed and power on Saturday night
Barcelos is crafty but he’s going to need a miracle to win at UFC 311
I think Talbott shows out and gets the biggest win of his young career before the final bell

Chances are whoever owns that house is Portuguese
Whether you’re full-blooded or just a little bit Portuguese

but I recently came across an interesting website that simplified it
According to We Are Portugal, hundreds of years ago a pilgrim traveling through the city of Barcelos on his way to Santiago de Compostela was wrongly accused of a crime and sentenced to death
the man claimed the rooster would crow at his execution
From that day forward, the Barcelos Rooster has been a powerful symbol in Portuguese culture. Whenever I come across one of these roosters, including the new one in downtown New Bedford, this story will come to mind

Now he’s ready to take that final step and position himself for a shot at the bantamweight title
Nurmagomedov will take on fellow contender Cory Sandhagen this weekend at UFC Abu Dhabi

Nurmagomedov’s run of form in the UFC has seen him claim submission finishes of Sergey Morozov and Brian Kelleher
a knockout of Raoni Barcelos and a pair of decision wins against Nate Maness and Bekzat Almakhan.
That slate of victories currently has him listed 10th in the official UFC bantamweight rankings

Nurmagomedov’s relentless approach and seemingly bottomless gas tank make him an incredibly tough test for anyone at 135 pounds

That’s a very good question,” he grinned
Victory for Nurmagomedov is likely to put him next in line for a shot at the UFC bantamweight title
and he had some words for reigning 135-pound champion Sean O’Malley

I don’t care about who’s gonna win,” he said

Another big attraction has been confirmed for UFC 311 on January 18 in California which serves as the first big event from the MMA leader in 2025
undefeated rising star Payton Talbott will face his toughest test to date in Raoni Barcelos
The fight was initially reported by MMA Fighting before it was officially confirmed by the UFC
9-0 Talbott has been one of the breakout stars of 2024 following a Contender Series win in August of last year
He followed that up with a finish over Nick Aguirre on his Octagon debut but it's this year where he has really emerged as one of the most exciting prospects in the sport
The 26-year old has earned consecutive performance bonuses by dominating and stopping Cameron Saaiman in March and finishing Yanis Ghemmouri in just 19 seconds in June
37-year old Barcelos has got eight more Octagon appearances than his opponent and far more pro experience as a seasoned bantamweight contender
the Brazilian submitted Cristian Quiñonez to bounce back from consecutive defeats to Umar Nurmagomedov and Kyler Phillips
Barcelos tends to only lose to opponents that go on to compete in and around the top 15 so this will be an excellent acid test for the surging Talbott

none stung harder than his latest defeat inside the Octagon
Back in January, Barcelos fought Umar Nurmagomedov, who is one of the most feared rising stars in the 135-pound weight class
Nurmagomedov extended his undefeated record to 16-0 with a first-round knockout

who showcased one of his best performances to date in February when he submitted Marcelo Rojo via triangle armbar
Phillips was expected to take on Said Nurmagomedov
Nurmagomedov pulled out of the bout last month
While Barcelos is stepping in to take his place on only a couple weeks’ notice
the Brazilian has trained daily since his previous training camp in the spring and is more than ready to compete on Saturday night
but Barcelos has kept his original game plan for his bout against Johns and has only made a few tweaks with his coaches in preparation for Phillips
This means Barcelos has essentially had a three-month long training camp to get ready for Nashville
