Triatomines in Latin America are natural Chagas disease (ChD) vectors
Triatomine domiciliation is one of the main factors increasing the occurrence risk of this disease in humans
with three genera of significant epidemiological importance—Panstrongylus
the invasion by triatomines has been reported
This study aimed to survey triatomine fauna and determine the Trypanosoma cruzi natural infection rates in triatomines in the urban area of Barra do Garças
Triatomine specimens were sampled by passive surveillance or active search by agents combating endemic diseases from 2019 to 2020
A parasitological feces diagnosis was performed to detect the presence of T
molecular diagnosis and genetic sequencing were performed to determine the strain
williami were found through morphological analyses
These insects were sampled inside domiciles in an urban area neighboring Jardim Pitaluga (15° 51′57.7″ N
The records were sampled in September 2019 and January 2021
williami specimens from the sampled colonies were positive for the T
williami has been confirmed in an urban area of Barra do Garças
Further studies are needed for a clearer understanding of the ecology of this species for prevention and control mechanisms since its sampled specimens had a high rate of natural infection by T
the domiciliation of this species was demonstrated by observing all of its life stages
This study aimed to survey triatomine fauna and determine the natural infection rates in Barra do Garças municipality
This study would provide relevant information for improving the ChD monitoring activities of sanitary authorities
Adapted from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística—IBGE)
052° 16′04.5″ W) from the Triatoma williami colonies and the Parque Estadual da Serra Azul (PESA) (15° 49′15″ S 52° 12′57″ W)
the climate in this region has a 60% annual average humidity and an annual average temperature of 20–27 °C
The headquarters of the municipality are organized in 53 neighborhoods
The city health secretary has 45 endemic control field agents to perform health surveillance and vector control activities
Three of these agents work in the surveillance and control of ChD vectors
The action of these agents consists of performing health education for ChD prevention and domicile inspections
chemical control is performed using residual action insecticides made available by the Brazilian Ministry of Health
Barra do Garças is comprised in the health region Garças Araguaia
This city is the location of the regional health office of Barra do Garças and the Entomology Laboratory at the Regional Health Office (ERSBG abbreviation in Portuguese) from the state health secretary of Mato Grosso (SESMT abbreviation in Portuguese)
Monthly spreadsheets from the ChD control program (PCDCh abbreviation in Portuguese) containing data on the activities were sent to ERSBG by SESMT
and natural rate of infection were analyzed in ERSBG
Investigations of whether there were seasonal patterns for species and the construction of historical series
The analyzed insects were collected via passive surveillance by residents or active search by agents combating endemic diseases on scheduled domicile visits from 2019 to 2020
The second colony was found in January 2021 and entered in this analysis without waiting for the ERSBG database to close at the end of each year
A parasitological examination of fresh feces from live-sampled specimens with intestinal contents was performed
5 μl of intestinal content plus two drops of phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.2) between slides and coverslips were observed under a microscope optical at 400×
This procedure is the conventional diagnosis recommended by the Ministry of Health in Brazil
a request from a resident was attended by the ChD surveillance team
where a triatomine entomological survey was conducted
the agents performed another entomological research in that domicile
the agents carried out residual chemical control in this domicile
williami specimens from different stages of development were found
The data were tabulated and analyzed using Excel 2016 for Windows® (Microsoft
The following entomological indicators were considered in the analysis: number of triatomines captured (males
number of triatomines found inside and outside of the domiciles
Descriptive statistics were used to obtain the absolute and relative frequencies
The absolute frequency was estimated as the number of triatomine collected by specie and to calculate the relative frequencies used the absolute frequencies by the total number of triatomines
Only entomologic indices are considered risk factors associated with T
The results are presented in percentages and indices
The triatomine prevalence was estimated as the number of triatomine specimens by the total number of triatomines collected
The natural infection rate was calculated from the number of infected triatomines/number of triatomines examined × 100
T. williami has been registered in eight neighborhoods in the urban area of Barra do Garças, Mato Grosso, Brazil. In 2019 and 2020 (Table 1)
the highest infestations recorded were found in boundaries neighborhoods of the PESA in descending order: Jd
williami population was 75 females and 19 males in 2019 and 30 females and 10 males in 2020
The female-to-male ratio was not within the expected 1:1 pattern: 3.9 (75/19) and 3 (30/10) times more females than males
From 2019 to 2020, 178 T. williami were collected. Sixty percent of them were found inside the domiciles, 22% in the peridomicile, and we did not have any information for 18% of them. For intradomicile environments, bedrooms and living rooms were the most infested (Table 2)
We observed a seasonality pattern from a monthly density analysis of the sampled triatomines from 2019 to 2020. Such a pattern was associated with the increase in the sampled triatomine in the third quarter of the respective years analyzed. This period was recorded as the driest climatic season in the region (Fig. 2).
The number of Triatoma williami collected between 2019 and 2020 in Barra do Garças
A total of 211 triatomine specimens were collected between 2019 and 2020. It was possible to assess the natural infection in 132 specimens from these samples. Of the 132 triatomine specimens analyzed, 52 (39.4%) were naturally infected with T. cruzi, revealing a high natural infection rate. T. williami had a higher infection prevalence (Table 3)
Four triatomine species were found naturally infected
The natural infection rate in descending order according to species was 43.6% (48/110)
williami had the highest infection prevalence
representing the most significant risk for the human population in Barra do Garças
A The field agents performed an entomological survey in the cracks of resident bed; B One male and three female specimens of Triatoma williami; C Eggs (yellow circle) and nymphs (red circle) collected in Barra do Garças
After these triatomine specimens were found
the endemic control agents of the city health secretary from Barra do Garças conducted a residual chemical control in that domicile
no entomological research or chemical control were performed in this domicile
more specimens were caught by residents inside their domiciles
These specimens were handed over to the ERSBG from the SESMT
This was the second compound domiciliation record with eight sampled specimens: two males
In February 2021, the field agents carried out residual chemical control in the infested domicile. In June 2021, the resident on that infested domicile collected and delivered two additional T. williami nymphs to the ERSBG from the SESMT: one nymph in the N1 stage, one dead male, and one exuviae (Fig. 4).
The specimens of Triatoma williami sampled after the residual chemical control in Barra do Garças
T. williami colonies were found in beds indoors in an urban area in the Jardim Pitaluga neighborhood (Fig. 1) in Barra do Garças
Voucher specimens from the first colony were deposited in the Herman Lent Collection of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz in Rio de Janeiro
CTIOC13006; three nymphs (CTIOC13007 to CTIOC13009) and five eggs
williami colony were deposited in the “Entomological Collection Prof
José Maria Soares Barata” in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences UNESP—Araraquara—São Paulo Brazil
williami colonies found in an urban area in Barra do Garças
two adult female specimens were positive for T
cruzi in the parasitological diagnosis being submitted to the molecular diagnosis and later to the genetic sequencing
cruzi strain was revealed by the identification results
williami in the domiciliation process should be problematic because of the record of this species naturally infected by T
found that the natural infection rate of this species by T
We observed an elevated infection rate of T
cruzi in 2019 and 2020 in our parasitological feces diagnosis
indicating the transmission risk of the parasite by this vector
the transmission risk of the parasite to humans in the region might be increased by the occurrence of triatomine colonies infected by this strain in domicile environments
and triatomines highly attracted to artificial lights
the environmental parameters encountered during this study
particularly during the first hours after sunset
are favorable for the active dispersal of sylvatic triatomines
One immediate recommendation is that external artificial lights on walls must remain turned off during the first hours after sunset
Triatomines find favorable atmospheric and environmental conditions for dispersal
The primary limitation of this study was the COVID-19 pandemic
Because the domicile visits were reduced along with the communication of new triatomine specimens being caught
the number of specimens analyzed in 2020 was lower than in the other years
Another limiting factor was the number of dead triatomines delivered by residents
impairing the parasitological diagnosis of the presence of T
this study is the first to confirm the domiciliation of T
williami in urban areas of Barra do Garças
This record occurred after sporadic invasions by this species in domiciles near an environmental conservation unit
This park is composed of native vegetation and wild animals
These conditions reinforce the importance of entomological surveillance for the sanitary control of triatomines
Further studies are needed to better understand the ecology of these species for their prevention and control mechanisms
since they have a high natural infection rate by T
Specimens from this study were deposited in the Herman Lent Collection of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz in Rio de Janeiro

JBS has committed to funding and supporting several sustainability projects in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso
including an effort to improve traceability
JBS has invested a lot of money in the state of Mato Grosso in Brazil
The CEO of JBS Gilberto Tomazoni and the CEO of IDH – the Sustainable Trade Initiative
Daan Wensing announced that they will broaden their partnership for the sustainable production of calves in Brazil
Their goal is to register one million animals by 2025
ensuring that calves can be traced from breeder farm all the way through the supply chain
Since 2019, JBS has supported the Brazilian State of Mato Grosso’s Produce, Conserve and Include (PCI) Strategy
one of the largest subnational projects globally
aiming to transform Brazilian livestock traceability
An initiative for sustainable development based on land use efficiency
PCI is an instrument for Mato Grosso to reach its Net Zero commitment by 2035
with emissions reduction of 236 gigatons of CO2
The partnership will now also be extended to Pará State and already supports the goals of Barra do Garças PCI Compact
where the company operates a beef processing unit
JBS says it will provide specialised technical assistance through its Green Offices network
On the ground teams will work with breeders to encourage them to declare their animals on the Protocol for Sustainable Production of Calves platform
managed by CNA (the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock)
JBS says this will ensure greater transparency and enable land title regularisation as well as environmental regularisation under the Brazilian Forestry Code
JBS hopes its investment in technical assistance to support breeders to adhere to the Protocol will also support IDH’s landscape aim to recover 100,000 hectares of low productivity pasture in Barra do Garças (Mato Grosso) and 2.5 million hectares throughout the state of Mato Grosso
“This is a crucial moment for forests and for farmers in the landscapes we are working in as part of our sustainable production of calves program,” said IDH CEO Daan Wensing
“JBS shares our vision of reducing social and environmental risk in these areas
we can make the improvements sorely needed in the beef supply chain
and drive transformation of global food systems.”
“Our ‘Green Offices’ have carried out a remarkable work of inclusion
more than 2,400 farms have already become environmentally regularised
enabling the traceability and sustainability of calves from the breeder farm – an essential compliance link in the production chain.” added Tomazoni

missão!" This sentence from the poem of Msgr
bishop emeritus of the Prelature of São Félix do Araguaia
is most appropriate to describe what happened in the Bororo village church of Meruri
officially opened the Diocesan Inquiry on the life
and signs of the Servants of God: Rodolfo Lunkenbein
and the indigenous Simone Cristiano Koge Kudugodu
representing all the Salesian bishops of Brazil; the Provincial of Brazil-Campo Grande
Fr Gildásio Mendes dos Santos; the Provincial of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians of Mato Grosso
Sister Antonia Brioschi; the representatives of the Episcopal Conference of Brazil
of the Missionary Indigenous Council (CIMI)
a body linked to the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB)
gave a new meaning to the work of the Catholic Church with indigenous peoples; of the "Fundação Nacional do Índio" (FUNAI)

responsible for the protection of the indigenous peoples and their lands; numerous Salesians
Mass began at 10 o'clock before the monument erected at the site where Fr Lunkenbein and Simão offered their lives on July 15
read the opening decree of the diocesan inquiry
signed by the bishop of Barra do Garças
The members of the Tribunal then took their office and took the oath
as did the experts of the Historical Commission
"There could have been nothing better to present to Don Bosco on the day of his feast: a missionary son of Don Bosco and an indigenous recipient of his mission
walking together on the road to the altars," commented Fr Pierluigi Cameroni
Postulator General of the Causes of the Saints of the Salesian Family
Pedro Casaldáliga: "In Mass and in dance
weave the alliance Rodolfo and Simão
(ANS - Vatican City) - The Congregation for the Causes of Saints
in the Ordinary Congress of 16 December 2020
after examining the Acts of the diocesan inquiry carried out
in the Diocese of Barra do Garças (Brazil) on the life and martyrdom
on the reputation of martyrdom and signs of the Servants of God Rodolfo Lunkenbein
replied in the "affirmative" as regards the legal validity of that investigation
signed by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints
confirms that the testification and documentary proofs have been collected according to the established norms
underscored that “this is a great milestone
the result of the work carried out with passion and competence in the diocesan phase
A special thanks goes to the members of the diocesan Tribunal
to the Vice-Postulator Fr Paulo Jácomo Eduardo
to Fr João Bosco Maciel for their generous dedication
Lodovica Maria Zanet for her constant and qualified collaboration.”
today General Councilor for Social Communication and who in his capacity as Provincial of the Campo Grande Province has supported the Cause with determination
expresses his joy as follows: “This news
the Salesian Family and indigenous peoples from all over the world
It is also an invitation to continue praying for the good outcome of the Cause itself
and a stimulus for all of us to live our vocation in following Christ with hope
that holiness is the main goal of our life.”
Now the Congregation for the Causes of Saints will proceed with the appointment of the Relator and an external Collaborator for the preparation of the "Positio super martyrio"
that is the volume that presents and examines the life
the material and formal martyrdom of the Servants of God

in the courtyard of the Salesian mission of Meruri
Their cause of martyrdom is a living sign that God has blessed the Congregation and the Church with His love and grace
"Incredible how this cause has struck the hearts of so many people in the Mato Grosso Province
The example of faith and love for the Kingdom of God of Fr Rodolfo and Simão is truly a sign and a call to renewal and missionary ardor," comments Fr Pierluigi Cameroni
Postulator General for the Causes of Saints of the Salesian Family
"Father Rodolfo and Simão are part of that long line of Catholic missionaries and indigenous people murdered as they accompanied
evangelized and fought alongside the Indians for their rights
of the peoples that inhabit it and its immense natural
has been and is still fertilized by the blood of martyrs."
the Provincial of Brazil Campo Grande (BCG)
to the educative-pastoral communities and to the Salesian Family
inviting them to live this gift with participation
He also emphasized how Fr Lunkenbein and Simão lived a true encounter with Jesus Christ
sealed a deep alliance in blood by giving themselves: "a covenant of hearts and dreams in missionary lands."
the writings of Fr Lunkenbein shall be discussed; in his letters
he showed his missionary heart and the prophetic power of the Gospel in promoting justice and solidarity
allusions to death often appear: "Even today
a missionary must be willing to die to do his duty
The help you give us shows that you have clearly understood what it means today to be a Christian: to sacrifice oneself with Christ
to die with Christ and to win with Christ for the salvation of the whole world of our neighbor." (Letter to his countrymen dated 11.08.1975)
