The young squad of Sao Paulo Barueri starred in one of the major upsets of the 2020-2021 Brazilian Women’s Superliga so far when the team downed SESC RJ Flamengo on Friday.
The Barueri-based side, which has the youngest roster in the entire league, averaging less than 21 years of age per player, made the most of home-court advantage at the Jose Correa Arena to post a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-16) victory over the 12-time Superliga winners.

Karina Souza, a 22-year-old outside hitter who was part of Brazil’s roster at both the 2015 FIVB Volleyball U18 World Championship and the 2017 FIVB U20 World Championship, scored 19 points and was selected best player of the match.
“We did a great job tactically, especially with our serves,” Karina explained. “They are one of the best teams in the country and serving well helped us put them in difficult situations. I believe we were making way too many mistakes in the first half of the season, but we have things under control now and are playing a lot better.”

Seven more matches are to be played by each team before the end of the regular season
As both teams have been eliminated from the Brazilian Cup
they will only return to the court on February 8
