Polina Rahimova stood out in the first volleyball matches of the year in Brazil as the Azeri opposite led SESI Volei Bauru to a remarkable comeback on the road against SESC Flamengo on Monday in the country’s 2020-2021 Superliga.
The 1.98m-tall Rahimova, the best scorer of the 2019-2020 edition of the tournament, delivered an outstanding performance registering 38 points, the second-highest mark ever in the league, to help SESI Bauru recover from a first-set loss to win 3-2 (17-25, 25-22, 33-31, 24-26, 15-13) in Rio de Janeiro.
The 30-year-old Azeri scored more than half of Sesi Bauru’s attacking points, registering 34 of the team’s 62 points at the net, while also adding two blocks and two aces. The veteran, who was voted the Most Valuable Player of the match, had 67 hits, converting 51 per cent of them into points.
She’s also the top scorer of the league with 178 points and the best server with 17 aces.

Brazil national team middle blocker Mara Leao provided her with the most help
SESC Flamengo also got good production from their opposite
who scored 22 points and was followed by 16-year-old outside hitter Ana Cristina Souza
Team captain and outside hitter Amanda Francisco (13) and middle blockers Valquiria Dullius (13) and Juciely Barreto (11) also scored in double digits for the Rio de Janeiro-based side
The match also presented an interesting duel on the sidelines with former Brazil men’s national team head coach Bernardo ‘Bernardinho’ Rezende facing his longtime assistant Roberley ‘Rubinho’ Leonaldo
who recently moved to the women’s game to take over as SESI Bauru’s head coach
“Our main goal right now is to play more consistently at a very high level because that’s what we’re going to need when the playoffs come,” Rubinho commented
“We showed strength today and remained focused while recovering from some deficits
Our serving and our defensive system were good and Polina had an outstanding performance
The result pushed SESI Bauru ahead in the standings as the visitors now have 22 points and rank fourth
Both teams will return to the court on Friday
when SESI Bauru host Pinheiros and SESC Flamengo play the Rio de Janeiro Derby with Fluminense
