In the distance, faint voices and barroom clatter grow louder. The smell of fermenting wort and French fries lingers in the air. We take in a deep, thirsty breath and step into Omas Haus Brewpub.  Greeting us with a warm smile and handshake is owner Gustavo Kielwagen who explains that the meaning behind his brewery’s poetic-sounding name is completely literal.  and old bottles cover the walls of the taproom Kielwagen takes us inside through a maze of malt containers and fermentation tanks producing around 26 barrels per month.  I’m sweating profusely and so are the fermentation tanks The humidity is unbearable sometimes.” I ask what the typical winter is like Omas Haus is a small but significant player here in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina roughly 460 miles southwest of Rio de Janeiro When most of Blumenau’s breweries were making predictable beers in just a handful of styles it started turning out terroir-driven beers namely from Malteria Blumenau and Maltes Catarinense the team uses Brazilian hops and ambient yeasts isolated from the area’s citrus peels As he explains the ingredients in his Brazilian Farmhouse Ale “We make truly Brazilian beer with Brazilian malts The state of Santa Catarina is the birthplace of the Catharina Sour—tropical-fruit-infused kettle-soured Wheat Ales—so I try a version made with dragon fruit Kielwagen pours us a Double Barrel Dark Sour Grand Cru that’s been aged in American and French Oak Then he offers the team’s signature Brazilian Farmhouse Ale and another made from wild Brazilian yeast The beers blow me away with their complexity you have to visit our friends at Levteck in Florianópolis They’re the ones isolating the yeasts that we and a lot of other breweries use.” I ask Kielwagen about the design on the Omas Haus label A stenciled tree with a face—reminding me of the trippy carved buddha head encased in gnarled tree roots I saw a decade ago in Ayutthaya It’s a jaboticaba.” The tree produces hundreds of dark purple edible berries every year and is the symbol of the brewery and the fruitful nature of his grandmother’s house We’re going to grill the best steaks in the city.” We part ways with the team at Omas Haus and check in with our hosts, Martha Lanser Bloemer and Leonardo Tedesco, on the other side of town. The couple live near Vila Germânica the German-themed commercial park that hosts the second largest Oktoberfest in the world.  “You have to come back during Oktoberfest,” says Lanser Bloemer “My great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather also produced their own beer hundreds of thousands of people arrive for weeks of debauchery aside from locals walking dogs or chatting about neighborhood gossip outside their homes “What I love about my city is that I can walk by myself even when I’m alone Blumenau and greater Santa Catarina State are far from the stereotypical party-till-dawn atmosphere of Rio de Janeiro there are a couple dozen places nearby; some of them are pretty hidden you can drive 40 minutes one way and get to the woods and mountains and go 40 minutes the other way to get to beautiful beaches,” says Tedesco.  The rivers and steep terrain that make Blumenau’s geography special also make it deadly it has been periodically devastated by floods and 2008—isolated the city for weeks and caused billions of dollars in damages It was after the 1984 flood that the first Oktoberfest was held by city officials to draw tourists to improve the city’s damaged economy.  After our hosts part with us for the evening aside from colorful birds playing in the tree canopy above us On Saturday morning we wake up early, eat ripe maracuja, aka passion fruit, and get in the car. Google Maps takes us on another detour, through dirt roads and steep winding passes. We cross the historic Salto Bridge and drive to one of the city’s largest producers, Cerveja Blumenau where we meet brewer Alexandre Mello.  A poster of a capybara mascot hangs proudly above photos of the crew Cerveja Blumenau is one of the largest craft breweries in Santa Catarina State producing on average 1,300 to 1,700 BBLs per month Brewing craft beer is relatively new to Brazil people have been making beer for 200 or 300 years here but the homebrewing part is only about 15 years old,” says Mello Cerveja Blumenau is known for a dependable American Lager as well as traditional German styles like Märzens and Pilsners Its labels are related to historical figures and events: Macuca takes its name from the first train to arrive in the city in the early 20th century It earned a gold medal at the International Beer Challenge in 2017.  Mello reveals that Cerveja Blumenau didn’t start out as the brewery it is today It started in 2015 as a team of contract brewers who made beer for other companies it sent samples of its Hop Lager and an American IPA to the Brussels Beer Challenge.  because we had a lot of free marketing because everybody was talking about that,” he says This type of packaging saved a lot of breweries from closing during the pandemic,” he says craft breweries relied on plastic bottles to sell and distribute to clients “They’re still popular even after the pandemic.”   I look over at plastic bottles stacked and ready to enter the flash pasteurizer “We have to pasteurize our beers here in Brazil it’s very easy for unpasteurized beer to spoil here.”  He leads us from the large industrial fermentation tanks of the main brewery into a section of small tanks its Craft Lab brand is made to appeal to Brazil’s growing number of beer fanatics and the brewers themselves.  He explains the different yeasts and bacteria that go into Craft Lab’s small-batch styles That style started as a way to show the Brazilian consumer what Weiss beer could taste like “The people at the bars would order a Weiss beer that was sour and think it was bad and send it back,” he says let's create a name that when people read or hear about it they know what to expect.” Catharina Sour became the region’s signature style “I personally like to make Catharina Sour with Brazilian fruits like pequi and other rare fruits you can’t find anywhere else in the world.”  We round the corner and step into a small room where we are surrounded by 65 French and American Oak barrels Cerveja Blumenau’s barrel program focuses on Lambics we have to taste test everything,” he says Mello grabs a glass and pours some beer for us to try which oddly reminds me of a racy Alsatian Riesling with a tannic I ask Mello what makes Brazilian beers stand out.  “We have breweries in the north of Brazil that make beers with regional ingredients that are not known outside of that region provide craft brewers in the country with a new range of flavors to work with.  Mello thinks that the next style to carry the face of Brazil will probably be related to maturing beer in native Brazilian wood barrels Guarana and other tropical and subtropical hardwoods already used in cachaça can add levels of complexity and flavors found nowhere else so we say goodbye to Mello and head back to Omas Haus where Kielwagen explains what he’s grilling followed by the Brazilian essentials: farofa—a side dish of toasted cassava flour—as well as rice It takes us a while to work through the massive In his hand is a fresh hop flower grown on his grandma's porch and subtropical landscapes are far from the climates known for cultivating world-class hops the country’s hop industry is growing fast thanks to Santa Catarina’s demanding craft beer industry and the state’s high-elevation hop farms and Columbus varieties all thrive in the country’s cool highlands estimates that the entire country produced just under 25 tons per year in 2022 Although the beer scene is dynamic and growing things in Brazil aren’t exactly rosy for starting a craft brewery taxes are high compared to other countries and keeping up with the big guys who sell beer at cheaper prices remains a constant challenge “There used to be a lot more local breweries here but the big guys like Heineken and AmBev bought them Brazil had just over 1,000 breweries in operation though that number has probably decreased slightly since the pandemic the state of Santa Catarina is home to 239 breweries we return to our neighborhood and walk off our food The city’s neighborhoods and one-way streets rise along steep hills A mixture of glass office buildings and Bauhaus condos mix with crumbling low German houses swallowed by the encroaching jungle inspired to leave the growing political and economic despair of 19th century Germany and Prussia Hermann Bruno Otto Blumenau and his boatman Ângelo Dias and screams of jacutingas—a South American bird now threatened by extinction—they continued up the river Blumenau assembled a group of 17 Germans who traveled here and built their colony in 1850 Many of the new transplants died due to tropical diseases and the backbreaking work The land was already settled by Indigenous Kaingang they fought against the encroaching Europeans The newly formed local governments relied on hired militants to terrorize the Indigenous peoples from the new colonies.   Blumenau considered the colony to be his personal property until the Brazilian government ruled it unlawful for one citizen to hold that much control Blumenau was kept on as a head administrator the city became an official municipality bearing his name.  After our long walk through the historic center of the city A server brings bottles of beer and a plate of sausages to a rowdy group of customers seated outside There are gift shops selling steins and clothing embroidered with the flags of Germany and Brazil Alpine decorations and German kitsch hang from traditional Fachwerk-style timber-framed houses where we order a Frida Blond Ale by Cerveja Blumenau and a wonderfully refreshing Witbier from Cervejaria Alles Blau A musician in the courtyard plays samba and chart-toppers by Pearl Jam on his guitar A young couple walks by in full lederhosen and dirndl It’s easy to imagine this place during the height of Oktoberfest when Blumenau turns into one of the biggest parties in Southern Brazil we pack up and drive to nearby Florianópolis the island capital of the state of Santa Catarina which is connected to the mainland by two bridges.   At 3 p.m. we arrive at Levteck the producer of liquid yeast for Omas Haus we put on a pair of shoe covers and bonnets Levteck produces everything from standard Lager and Ale yeasts to blends of microorganisms for Flanders Red Ale “We sell to about 400 breweries in all the country We’re the only liquid yeast lab in Santa Catarina and just one of two in all of Brazil that can sell liquid yeast,” Muller says.  Levteck competes with dry-yeast companies in Brazil its biggest challenge is to ship its products to end users within the liquid yeast’s 48-hour expiration window a former assistant at Cerveja Blumenau who isolated local yeasts for his university thesis Muller grabs glasses and invites us to sample some beers some of which are in label-less containers reminiscent of something from one of my high-school lab projects.  fermented with two Brazilian strains of Saccharomyces that were isolated from local lime trees with hints of spice and toasted bitterness; it quickly becomes one of my favorite South American beers “This smells like Bubbaloo,” Muller says in Portuguese The team’s faces light up at the idea of a famous Brazilian chewing gum as a tasting note.  Brigido explains that many of the yeasts came from fruit trees growing right in front of the lab “I picked the fruit and put it right on pure wort and watched it ferment,” he says Those isolation experiments resulted in some 28 new strains I ask if they think there are more yeasts somewhere in the surrounding forest “The lime yeasts were right next to a brewery and lab If we find some yeasts in the forest and go back the next day As I finish the last sip of the delicious Tripel “This one’s a Moscato wort fermented with Lactobacillus buchneri and Brazilian Brettanomyces,” says Dr It’s unlike any beer I’ve ever tried: a fruit-forward nose brimming with tropical floral notes and a finish that reminds me of homemade mochi straight from the steamer.  and Cervejaria Cozalinda called Coza Bella: a Saison base re-fermented in French Oak with Chardonnay wort and Brazilian Brettanomyces A pleasant fruity aroma hits my nose and shifts to warm Then my tastebuds are filled with bright acidity followed by a long-lasting We end with a Christmas beer from Cozalinda fermented with wild local microorganisms in sassafras wood After our tastings in the lab, we go to Ratones Craft Beer, a nearby brewpub that produces its beer using Levteck’s yeast We grab a table and more friends of the Levteck team join us including Ratones’ co-founder Vitor Capella.   “What is the difference between Florianópolis and Blumenau Blumenau is very conservative,” says Muller While Florianópolis breweries dive into their weird side most of Blumenau’s breweries stick to tradition in order to satisfy their consumers.  It seems that Brazil is entering a beer renaissance The country’s brewers are competing internationally and that competitive spirit and demand for excellence is spreading throughout the country old-world focused brewers and those who are hyper-focused on creating new styles from the local wild yeasts and herbs that exist nowhere else on earth allowing the old and the new to coincide and setting up the country to become an open frontier for good beer.  offering a toast to Brazilian terroir.  and Publications that’ll drive you to drink If you have any questions or need help you can email us The traditional Gemütlichkeit (cosiness) with a warm breeze and a whiff of exotic flowers a German former adviser at the São Paulo branch of Commerzbank “I actually liked it better than the Munich Oktoberfest,” he said but in Blumenau there’s more of a carnival atmosphere I don’t think they are just putting on a show for the tourists – this is their culture What I found very weird was… the people who live there speak German the language as it was spoken in the 19th century “My wife – she is Brazilian – found it especially weird And I struggled to understand some of it.” In the theme-park-like German Village there’s a carnival parade Revellers get in for free if they are wearing traditional Bavarian Lederhosen (leather breeches with embroidered braces) or dirndls (low-cut gingham dresses with matching aprons) schnitzel and sausage complete the picture Seasoned drinkers compete to down a chopp em metro (yard of ale) But don’t be fooled – this is a non-alcoholic brew but The 25-year-old man, named locally as Luiz Henrique de Lima, arrived at the pre-school in Blumenau, southern Brazil, on a motorbike before going on a horrifying rampage, attacking the children who were playing in a park behind the school. Local media reported the victims as four-year-old children Bernardo Pabest da Cunha and Enzo Marchesin Barbosa, Bernardo Cunha Machado, aged five, and Larissa Maia Toldo, aged seven.  A fifth child is said to be in a serious condition, while three other casualties were taken to Santo Antonio Hospital. The hospital confirmed that children, aged between 'zero and two-years-old', had arrived for treatment. The tragic attack was carried out at the CEI Cantinho do Bom Pastor pre-school in the Velha neighbourhood of Blumenau at around 9am local time (12:00GMT).  As emergency services rushed to the scene, Henrique de Lima was arrested after turning himself in at a state police station.  Images broadcast on television showed weeping parents outside the private daycare centre, known as the Good Shepherd Center, while motorists were seen racing through red lights to get to the scene. Governor Jorginho Mello confirmed the tragedy and expressed his condolences in a statement: 'It is with great sadness that I receive the regrettable news that the private day care centre Cantinho do Bom Pastor, in Blumenau, has been invaded by an assassin who attacked children and staff.  'Unfortunately four died. I immediately determined the action of our security forces, who are already on the spot. The killer is already arrested. 'I leave here my full solidarity. May God comfort the heart of all families in this moment of deep pain.' Amid rumours on social media of other potential attacks, Blumenau's mayor, Mario Hildebrandt, said the city suspended classes and will declare a 30-day mourning period.  Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva condemned the attack as a 'monstrosity.' 'There is no greater pain than a family that loses children or grandchildren, even more so when it is in an act of violence against innocent and defenseless children,' he wrote on Twitter. 'My thoughts and prayers are with the victims' families... For any human being who has the Christian feeling, a tragedy like this is unacceptable, a behavior, an absurd act of hate and cowardice like this.' The State Board of Criminal Investigations has confirmed it will lead the investigation for the savage attack.  Violence in schools has been increasing in Brazil in recent years. Last week, a 13-year-old boy killed a teacher in a knife attack at a school in Sao Paulo. In November, a 16-year-old shooter killed four people and wounded more than 10 others in twin attacks on two schools in the southeastern city of Aracruz, in Espirito Santo state. In 2019, two former students shot dead eight people at a high school in Suzano, outside Sao Paulo, then also took their own lives. The country's deadliest school shooting left 12 children dead in 2011, when a man opened fire at his former elementary school in the Rio de Janeiro suburb of Realengo, then killed himself. With a one-hour time limit in effect, Williams won the rematch, 13-12.5 A plaque near the entrance of the park commemorates the 1859 game Finally, between the 1949 and 1950 seasons, the city spent $114,000 for a roofed, concrete-steel-and-iron grandstand seating 2,000, giving the ballpark the look and layout it retains today. “Unlike its predecessor, the new structure should stand up for many years to come,” the Berkshire Eagle predicted, accurately.22 Pro baseball returned to the city in 1941 and 1942, and again from 1946 to 1951, in the Class C Canadian-American (Can-Am) League. Future Hall of Famer Al Rosen, 22 years old, played for the Cleveland-affiliated Pittsfield Electrics of 1946; future Cardinal and Red pitcher Brooks Lawrence passed through town four years later Pittsfield hosted affiliated minor-league ball from 1965 to 1976 and several light stanchions were also on the field of play in the outfield who went 18-0 with a 2.73 ERA in 32 games with the Red Sox in 1965 and compiled a 23-game Eastern League unbeaten streak A news photograph before the 1986 season showed workmen installing a short porch to cut the right-center field distance from 430 feet to 365.30 Apparently, it wasn’t permanent. The Associated Press described the park as “misshapen” in 2002, providing dimensions of about 334 feet down each foul line, 374 to dead center, and, once again, 430 to right-center.31 Wahconah Park’s seating capacity has also fluctuated over its long history. The park’s occupants as of the 2022 season, the Pittsfield Suns of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, gave its capacity as 4,500.32 Other listed capacities from the Berkshire Eagle some of which no doubt depended on how many sections of bleachers were in place that year include 1,500 to 1,600 (April 1927); 1,600 (December 1945); “nearly 2,000” (May 1954); more than 4,000 (crowd at the Pittsfield Cubs’ opening day The park owes its best-known feature to its 19th-century origin. Because the field was laid out before the advent of night baseball, the sun sets behind left-center field, blinding modern batters, catchers, and home-plate umpires. At the height of summer, a “sun delay” is sometimes required, with the game pausing, usually for up to 20 minutes, to allow the sun to set.33 the old park by the Housatonic continues to dodge the attacks of time Wahconah Park’s aging grandstand failed a safety inspection and was closed in 2022. The Pittsfield Suns of the Futures Collegiate League played there in 2022 and 2023 using temporary bleachers set up along the first- and third-base lines. The Suns did not return for the 2024 season.84 As of June 2024, the city had made the decision to raze the grandstand and rebuild it in place; a final decision on the design, as well as formal approval, rested with the city’s Parks Commission. A city official estimated that Pittsfield could be ready to bid the project in the winter of 2024-25, which would allow for a spring 2026 opening. However, the city was still working to identify up to $8 million in funding needed to make the project viable.85 This biography was reviewed by Rory Costello and Keith Thursby and fact-checked by Kevin Larkin This biography relied extensively on the research of Kevin Larkin SABR member and western Massachusetts resident who has compiled two books about Wahconah Park’s history The author also referred to Baseball-Reference and Retrosheet for general player as well as articles in the Berkshire Eagle (Pittsfield Massachusetts) beyond those specifically cited in the notes 1 The owls are meant to keep pigeons from roosting in the grandstand rafters “Wahconah Chosen for Money’s 5 Best Parks,” Berkshire Eagle (Pittsfield 3 U.S. Census Bureau profile of Pittsfield, accessed online February 4, 2022. https://data.census.gov/cedsci/profile?g=1600000US2553960 According to the Census Bureau the city’s population peaked at about 58,000 in 1960 5 Ralph E “Williams Gets Revenge for 1859,” Berkshire Eagle The students also recreated a chess tournament that followed the original game 6 “Wahconah Park Successful Opening Yesterday,” Berkshire County Eagle Some retrospective stories written decades later spell the Albany team’s name as the Gizes 7 “The Opening Game,” Berkshire Eagle 8 “George W Burbank Dies in Easy Chair at His Home,” Berkshire Eagle Burbank’s obituary makes no mention of Wahconah Park but other news articles from the period connect him to the park 9 “Looking Backward,” Berkshire Eagle 10 “Russells,” Berkshire Eagle 11 “Russells,” Berkshire Eagle 12 “Season Will Open May 16,” Berkshire Eagle 13 “Fall from Bleachers Results in Death,” North Adams Transcript 14 Trudy Tynan (Associated Press) “Fans Go Out to Ballgame – For 100 Years,” Los Angeles Times This story misidentifies the original owner as “Charles Burbank.” The amount of money involved in the property transfer also varies from story to story 15 Bob Ryan 16 “Hillies Win Pennant by Staging Great Rally Against Worcester,” Berkshire Eagle 17 “Southpaws Subdue O’Connor Clan,” Hartford Courant “Pittsfield Wins Both Games of Double Bill with Champs,” Berkshire Eagle Subsequent legend has Gehrig’s round-tripper landing in the Housatonic River but game stories do not include this detail 18 “Rushing Work at Wahconah Park to Switch the Position of the Infield,” Berkshire Eagle 19 “Wahconah Park to Be Repaired,” North Adams (Massachusetts) Transcript 20 For instance the Berkshire Eagle reported in April 1947 that new bleachers to seat 3,030 fans were on their way from Illinois Combined with a single remaining section of current bleachers “New Bleachers to be Here for Opening Game,” Berkshire Eagle 21 “Heavy Welfare Load Features Second Year of Charter,” Berkshire Eagle 22 “Wahconah Park Grandstand to be Ready for Wednesday,” Berkshire Eagle 23 “Fun and Faults in Owls’ Night Baseball Game,” Berkshire Eagle 24 John M “Winker Hits 400-Foot Homer with Two on as Electrics Beat Rugmakers 9-3,” Berkshire Eagle Fred Winker later became chief building official in the city of Ormond Beach 25 John M “The Referee’s Sporting Chat,” Berkshire Eagle 26 The blueprint is reproduced on the back cover of Kevin Larkin’s Wahconah Park: Berkshire County’s Field of Dreams the first of two self-published books detailing the park’s long history 27 Brian Sullivan “‘Boomer’ Dominated That Summer of ‘65,” Berkshire Eagle 28 Roger O’Gara “Eastern League President Criticizes Wahconah Fence,” Berkshire Eagle Johnson also said the park needed better outfield lighting and improvements to the visitors’ locker room 29 Ray Lamont “Chestnut Draws Opening-Game Duty,” Berkshire Eagle playing for the Trois-Rivieres (Quebec) Aigles of the Double-A Eastern League 30 “New ‘Short Porch’ at Wahconah Park,” Berkshire Eagle 31 Tynan 32 “Wahconah History,” Pittsfield Suns website, accessed online February 4, 2022. https://pittsfieldsuns.com/wahconah-park/wahconah-history/ 33 Joe Strupp “Wahconah Park Has Historic Atmosphere,” Asbury Park (New Jersey) Press 34 Adrian Wojnarowski “The Ballpark That Couldn’t See Straight,” Fresno (California) Bee 35 Ray Lamont “Sun Sets on Cubs’ Winning Streak,” Berkshire Eagle Spencer was frustrated when his starting pitcher who had recently come off the disabled list had to sit through a 32-minute sun delay in a game the Cubs lost 36 Strupp Jackson played for the Pittsfield Cubs in 1985 and 1986 His 19-season professional career included parts of 12 seasons in the majors 37 Bill Carey “Can Wahconah Park Be Restored?” Berkshire Eagle 38 General Electric was a major employer and corporate citizen in Pittsfield for many decades 39 Kurt Blumenau, “June 26, 1972: Minor League No-Hitter Gets Lost in the Fog,” SABR Games Project. Senate Bill 231 calls for the elimination of these taxes on all menstrual products This bill passed in the state Senate in 2020 but has never made it past the Virginia House of Representatives “Just as we think about access to education access to basic health and wellness things we just knew that this was the right thing to do,” Hudacsko said The CT strives for accuracy. Muller was one of about 2,000 people who packed into the Vila Germanica complex to watch the game on two large TV screens drink beer and eat typical German dishes like wurst sausages and hackpeter - raw ground pork with onions and spices Muller said most people at the special early edition of Oktoberfest seemed resigned to the loss and sad "But they are dealing with all that by drinking more beer which helps them realize that it's no use crying that life must go on and that Germany played much better and deserved to win," she said Vila Germanica's architecture resembles houses in a traditional German village and the shops inside sell beer mugs handicrafts and traditional German clothing it hosts an Oktoberfest that attracts upward of 450,000 people said the city's Oktoberfest is the globe's second largest - losing out only to the one held in Munich German immigrants started arriving in Blumenau in 1850 and today 30 percent of the city's 320,000 residents are of German descent Stodiek said that "we in Blumenau attach a lot of value to the culture of our forefathers but like all good Brazilians we will root for Brazil to win the Cup." Associated Press writer Ana Pereira reported this story in Blumenau and Stan Lehman reported from Sao Paulo words: You don’t need to travel north to Germany to find an Oktoberfest complete with steins full of lager and beer maids serving hundreds of thousands of people while wearing dirndls and lederhosen you can go the complete opposite way: all the way down south to Brazil is the location of the third-largest Oktoberfest in the world It’s only smaller than the original in Munich and another north of us in Canada Official statistics from 2015’s Blumenau Oktoberfest show the event drew a crowd of 473,196 people who consumed 599,622 liters of beer That’s the equivalent of 20,275,632 fluid ounces But that all pales to Blumenau’s Oktoberfest peak of 1,010,060 visitors in 1992 let’s talk about what it’s like Blumenau’s Oktoberfest prominence (and fall from prominence) isn’t much of a surprise when history is taken into account. The city was founded on September 2, 1850 by a German pharmacist named Hermann Bruno Otto von Blumenau, the website Oktoberfest Brazil writes Von Blumenau traveled inland from the Atlantic Ocean by boat with 17 German farmers via the Itajaí-Açu River they disembarked and kicked the native people off the land The settlers built the town of Blumenau German-style — pointed-roof haus and all — despite being in the tropical The Germans eventually integrated and took on Portuguese but a natural disaster in 1983 brought back out the people’s German roots the same river responsible for the German population The city was still in need of a pick-me-up the following year and the people reverted to their German ways a full 174 years after the first-ever Oktoberfest in Munich Blumenau organized its own Oktoberfest to “lift the mood and the economy of the city and to celebrate the German identity and culture,” Oktoberfest Brazil writes Whatever the case, the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest in Canada overtook Blumenau as second place. To be fair, Kitchener-Waterloo was literally named City of Berlin until World War I. Third place isn’t bad, though. Add in the much cheaper cost of Brazil and the warmer climate, and you might reconsider traveling north for a life-changing Oktoberfest experience. we can't find the page that you are looking for exactly where you’d least expect it: Brazil The local German population dusts off their lederhosen annually for this thigh slapping Nestled away in the hills of Southern Brazil this gargantuan Oktoberfest party claims the mantle of second-largest in the world Carnaval and bountiful beaches hosts the biggest Oktoberfest in the world outside of Germany Blumenau attracts around a million visitors to the city every October for a three-week party that is a unique blend of German traditions and the insatiable Brazilian appetite to party Blumenau hosted its first Oktoberfest party in 1984 as a way to raise funds to repair the town after a devastating flood took its toll But Blumenau’s German history runs far deeper than the ‘80s the town was first established by only 17 German settlers in 1850 spearheaded by the delightfully named Dr Hermann Bruno Otto Blumenau Since then the town has grown into a thriving metropolis and German is still taught in schools as a second language This is a town so in touch with its German roots that when Brazil suffered its historically crushing 1-7 loss in the 2014 semi-final against Germany locals were happy to celebrate Germany’s win While this writer personally saw rivers of tears shed over that loss in other parts of the country Blumenau natives were happy to drown their sorrows in the win of a kindred culture The Brazilian flag may fly high all over the city White-walled houses with typical dark lumber cross beams would look more appropriate adorning the illustrated pages of a fairy tale but here they are in all their kitsch glory in Southern Brazil The same spirit of anachronism and creative revelry that morphs into Carnaval annually is awakened in Blumenau every October Parades wind through the city on a daily basis with German descendants and lederhosen-wearing locals yukking it up over steins on enormous floats and hilarious pedal-powered Once the parade winds down and the sun sets A huge purpose-built hall just outside the city centre hosts night-long concerts for festival attendees one is struck by the size and scale of the party at hand There are the traditional long beer hall style tables one expects lighting arrays and huge dance areas akin to those found at arena rock concerts The music exemplifies this blending of Brazilian and German culture Performances range from the typical Bavarian knee-slapping dance numbers all performed in German to dance-along songs that alternate between German and Portuguese and finally contemporary rock and DJ sets to get the beer fizzing While some might worry that the beer at a Brazilian Oktoberfest would be below par Local brewery Eisenbahn is a standout sponsor of the event as their beers outpace all of the mass-produced lagers Brazil has to offer Picking up awards for their dark Dunkel and delicious Kolsch beers Eisenbahn’s brews are to be trusted to the bottom of the stein attendees can expect a range of traditional German fare Sausages and pretzels are de rigueur of course and the spätzle is delicious but there is also a large focus on blended Brazilian cuisine with duck making a strong appearance in many dishes and a wide selection of traditional sweet cakes on offer Another distinctly Brazilian aspect of Blumenau’s Oktoberfest is the inclusion of a beauty pageant and crowning of the Oktoberfest ‘royalty’ in a twins who were presumed to be male at birth undergoing female gender confirmation surgery together said Dr Jose Carlos Martins of the Transgender Center Brazil a clinic in the southeastern city of Blumenau Martins performed the five-hour surgery on the twins one day apart joked and shed tears as they talked about their shared journey in a video-conference interview with AFP but I didn’t like my parents weren’t afraid of what we were they were afraid that people would mistreat us,” said Rezende Their grandfather is the one who paid for their surgeries He auctioned off a property he owned to pay the 100,000-reais ($20,000) bill said it was “a relief” when her twins came out as trans “I don’t even remember thinking of them as boys She recalled taking them to doctors and psychologists as children and that they were suffering,” said the 43-year-old school secretary “I’m upset with myself for never giving them a doll or a dress for not making them happier when they were girls,” she said But the twins said their mother was a rock of support “Whenever someone did something to us in the street the first thing we wanted to do was go home and tell our mom Rezende and Albuquerck - one has their father’s surname the other that of the grandfather who financed their surgeries - were originally planning to go to Thailand for the operation But then Rezende found the Transgender Center was a busy day on the courts of the SESI’s Sports Complex in Blumenau Brazil due to the semi-finals of the 21st World University Handball Championship The first teams to battle for a spot in the finals were the teams of the Czech Republic and Romania in the women’s competition and the teams of the Czech Republic and Portugal in the men’s tournament Third and fourth places will be decided between Brazil and Poland The first game this Friday was played at 10 am local time between Uruguay and Chile (women) with a victory for Chile after a tight game the men’s teams from Chile and Mexico played a fairly even match where both teams were racing the clock to increase the score the teams will play each other face again for the ninth place The match between Chinese Taipei and South Korea (men’s competition) that started at 12 p.m Chinese Taipei won from the Koreans with 32:30 Chinese Taipei tried to close the gap with Korea the whole game and managed to tie the game in the final seconds Chinese Taipei stood out defending 3 shots Turkey and Kuwait battled it out next which resulted in a score of 48:29 in favor of the Team Turkey The negative result was already expected based on Kuwait’s campaign which didn’t manage to get any victory The Czech Republic (women’s tournament) won against Poland by a difference of only 3 goals (30:27) The game between Brazil and Romania (women’s tournament) was even more balanced The Brazilian Men’s Team faced the Czech Republic for the semi-finals which resulted in a victory for the Czechs (30:36) The game between Poland and Portugal ended the competition day A surprising match where the Polish were the favorites but with a Portuguese victory: 26:27 for Portugal The 21st World University Handball Championship is an event Sports Federation and Blumenau’s City Hall Match Reports Day 6 © International University Sports Federation Rumours abound in Westminster that Theresa May will call a general election by summer as part of plans to force through her Brexit deal. New Statesman reports that several ministers have told their local party associations to prepare for it, and that the Tories are urgently seeking office space in London to free up space at Conservative HQ although it’s worth noting that it did that last time too The latest YouGov MRP constituency modelling – the same method which delivered near-perfect projections of a hung parliament in the 2017 general election – reveals that as it stands the Tories would be unlikely to gain enough seats to give the Prime Minister an effective majority From the 2nd to the 7th of February we asked 40,119 respondents who they would vote for in the event of a general election and the results were modelled by Ben Lauderdale and Jack Blumenau of UCL The most likely outcome according to the model is that the Conservatives would win 321 seats – just four more than their current tally Because Sinn Fein MPs do not take their seats this figure would probably give the Conservatives a working majority but would not be enough to offset the scores of Tory rebels the PM needs to overcome Click to enlarge One of the most likely gains for the Tories is Peterborough a seat which could see a by-election soon as Labour MP Fiona Onasanya was recently imprisoned for perverting the course of justice (but of course by-elections don’t always follow these national trends) The party also stands a good chance of taking Colne Valley but also looks likely to lose Richmond Park and St Albans to the Lib Dems Labour meanwhile are estimated to lose a handful of seats Vulnerable seats highlighted by the model are Nick Clegg’s old constituency of Sheffield Hallam The Liberal Democrats and SNP would each see four further MPs added to their ranks while the model also suggests the independent candidate Claire Wright could take East Devon from the Tories (although such unusual seats are harder to model) In terms of vote share the two main parties see sizeable slumps falling from their 43% figure in 2017 to 39% Labour meanwhile lose almost seven percentage points (Please note that these figures apply only to British constituencies and so would be slightly lower once votes from Northern Ireland were taken into consideration) The smaller parties appear to be the main beneficiaries although part of this increase is because the model allowed respondents to support UKIP and the Greens in all constituencies compared to the 2017 election when the parties only put up candidates in some seats The Liberal Democrats would find themselves netting 11% of votes cast compared to 8% at the last general election Likewise UKIP would experience an increase from 2% to 5% and the Greens from 2% to 4% The Scottish and Welsh nationalists meanwhile see their vote shares remain essentially static Among those who voted for each party in 2017 and would cast their ballot again the Conservatives retain 85% of their previous voters compared to 79% for Labour Most of those who are defecting from Labour are moving to the Lib Dems (8% of those who voted Labour at the last election) or the Greens (5%) Meanwhile many of those who are moving from the Conservatives are going to UKIP (5% of all those who backed the party in 2017) with a smaller number going to the Lib Dems (4%) Given that Labour are losing a lot more votes than the Conservatives these vote shares would represent a swing to the Tories of 1.4% If we were to apply that swing uniformly across all constituencies the Conservatives would gain 16 seats directly from Labour However the model predicts that as things currently stand they would only manage to gain six of these crucial target seats. The main reason for this is a phenomena sometimes referred to as the “sophomore surge” where first time incumbent MPs get a slightly higher voter share than would otherwise be expected This has been a fairly consistent theme in election results for the past 35 years most notably in 2001 when there was a 2% swing against Labour nationally but the Tories only managed to pick up four seats Many Conservatives target seats are in constituencies Labour first gained in 2017 so they will have to battle against this incumbency boost in the 28 seats that Labour gained from the Conservatives in the last election the model is currently showing there would be a small swing to Labour rather than the national swing against Further details of the results can be found here featuring a diverse range of survey results From the latest political surveys to in-depth analysis Our senior political specialists apply their expertise to provide projections and keep you up to date Get intelligence from our ever-growing source of consumer data on 29 million+ registered panel members in 55+ markets Public Data Explore YouGov's freely accessible dataElections Discover Key Insights on the UK General Election 2024For Business Helping the world's most recognised brands media owners and agenciesSign in Sign up Public Data Explore YouGov's freely accessible data Discover our public data Elections Discover Key Insights on the UK General Election 2024 The most timely For Business Helping the world's most recognised brands media owners and agencies Get intelligence from our ever-growing source of consumer data on 29 million+ registered panel members in 55+ markets The latest YouGov MRP constituency modelling – the same method which delivered near-perfect projections of a hung parliament in the 2017 general election – reveals that Click to enlarge However the model predicts that as things currently stand they would only manage to gain six of these crucial target seats. neo-Nazi groups in the country over the last few years The document classifies the current scenario as “alarming.” the council gathers data from a number of surveys including research by anthropologist Adriana Dias She found that neo-Nazi group cells surged by 270.6 percent in Brazil from January 2019 to May 2021 spreading across all regions of the country The phenomenon is said to have been driven by the spread of hate speech and extremist narratives Brazil had over 530 extremist groups at the beginning of 2022 Their members share a hatred of feminists as well as Jewish The southern state of Santa Catarina is one of the most worrying 63 neo-Nazi cells were mapped in Dias’s research Another survey was carried out by the Fiquem Sabendo agency It shows that 159 inquiries were opened by the Federal Police between January 2019 and November 2020 into condoning Nazism The figure covers less than two years and exceeds the total of 143 investigations opened over 15 years The document highlights that 14,476 anonymous complaints were received in 2021 by the National Cybercrime Center There is also mention of the Jewish Observatory’s survey of anti-Semitic and related events that took place in the country between 2019 and 2022 Some cases were described in which artifacts linked to Nazism were seized as well as decorative articles with images like Hitler's face and the swastika The council also draws attention to the rise in attacks on schools pointing out that in several cases the attacker used neo-Nazi imagery the episode that took place in December 2022 when a 16-year-old student killed four people in schools in Aracruz He was wearing a military uniform and an armband with a Nazi symbol on it the National Human Rights Council is tasked with promoting and But there's just one problem: Some records show the car was stolen in 1977 and there's a court order in the U.S There are so many Ferraris out there that are "rare" it's hard to keep track of them. The 330 LMB is one of the rarest, with just four in existence. Powered by a four-liter engine, the 330 LMBs were higher powered versions of the rare 250 GTO. They are among the last front-engined race ready cars to come out of Maranello, which makes them extremely valuable. the car in question is the only one with three carburetors It also doesn't have a competition history and wasn't raced from the factory Tales about cars like this aren't uncommon An irreplaceable classic exchanges hands for decades when a supposed "former owner" comes out of the woodwork to claim that the car is actually his The man who alleges he owns the car provided us with a notarized title and we were able to get confirmation from the FBI and Georgia police that this is indeed an open case bought the 330 LMB in 1974 from Atlanta Ferrari mechanic and dealer Donald Fong — a flamboyant and mythical man in Ferrari circles Blumenau told us the 330 was not his first Ferrari but it was certainly one of the most exclusive that he ever purchased Instead of keeping the car on his own property the car was left with Fong for safe-keeping and he told us that he still elected to keep the car with Fong because they had a number of dealings with each other and Blumenau found Fong to be trustworthy Blumenau was about to learn he was wrong to trust that instinct on March 18th According to a copy of the police report filed in DeKalb County, Georgia, the car was stolen from Donald Fong's shop in March 1977. But here's where things start to get weird. The owner on the police report is listed as Donald Fong The police report shows that the man that was storing the car said he was the owner even though the car appears to have been titled to Blumenau when a car is placed in the care of someone else it is given on consignment so there are no penalties if the car is sold while it is in the caretaker's custody Blumenau assures us that isn't what happened here he alleges the car was part of an elaborate scheme that resulted in Blumenau losing a rare Ferrari and high-dollar investment allegedly worked with Fong to make the car appear stolen when in reality it was sold to a new owner although a search revealed no one with that name with a criminal record A poster on the online Ferrari owners forum Ferrari Chat had possession of the car before it made its way across the country to Fong from California I recall acting as middle-man when a well-known ex-racer/dealer in Orange County then a highly regarded Ferrari mechanic (around Atlanta I was fortunate enough to have the car in my possession for a short while; it combined all the best features of a 250GTO and a Lusso — what a sweet car I have no idea if the money for the car was Don's or that of a customer but I recall that he ended up in jail for selling customers' cars and keeping the money and he "was in jail for another crime." We searched public records and found that Fong served time in prison for embezzlement which would verify the alleged dubious dealings seen by the poster on Ferrari Chat Fong was "car rich and cash poor" and also said there is "hearsay that two other cars were involved in the deal" along with 330 LMB #4619 But it doesn't appear this was Fong's car to sell shows he purchased the car in 1974 and had the title issued in 1975 The bank that loaned him the money for the car no longer exists However, the title means nothing when there is no actual car. Once it left Don Fong, Blumenau says that the 330 then was sent around the globe because of the alleged fraudulent sale by Stephen Brusini who Blumenau says helped Fong steal the car The 330 went to new homes in Chicago, Germany, and the Netherlands, even selling at auction in 1989 for $4.7 million. When it returned to America, it was seen infrequently, occasionally appearing at car shows like Pebble Beach. The car took up residence at the Behring Museum (later renamed the Blackhawk Museum) in Danville and at some point in the '90s it was sold to Kun-Hee Lee While the car was bouncing around the country Blumenau says he tried a number of angles to get the car back Blumenau involved the FBI in the case and they did confirm to Jalopnik that there is a case file for the car (the FBI told us they "don't confirm or deny an investigation unless they charge someone") DeKalb County also confirmed that the case is still "active," although there hasn't been actual "activity" of late The case is actually now civil instead of criminal because the statutes on the criminal charges have expired Blumenau told us that when he was digging and searching subsequent owner Joe Marchetti "threatened him and his family" for being nosy about the car Blumenau directed us to speak to the Blackhawk Museum as he claims they sold the stolen car to Kun-Hee Lee The Blackhawk Museum is an institution that displays cars from all over the world on a rotation The car is listed as being at the Blackhawk Museum in Ferrari Registries but never says that Blackhawk actually owned the car who immediately said "I never owned the car it's a scam and I don't want to get involved." The "It" he refers to appears to be Blumenau's search but Williams was unwilling to go on the record discussing the car Blumenau told us that "Blackhawk are the experts and they certainly wouldn't want their name to be tarnished by being involved with a stolen car." This is where Samsung's Chairman comes into the picture Kun-Hee Lee purchased the car as an investment A number of Asian investors do this to avoid import tariffs and other taxes that would be applied to the cars if transferred to their homes It was apparently easier to keep the car in America and let the value skyrocket has now finally been transferred to South Korea Lee has a bit of a checkered past himself. In 2008, he was sentenced to a suspended three year prison term for allegedly bribing influential figures around South Korea so influential and important is Lee that he ended up being pardoned by the South Korean government for any wrongdoing there is no evidence that Lee was involved with the stealing of the car Given the large gap in time and numerous owners it's likely Lee has no idea of the car's checkered past However, there are also some questions about Blumenau. In 1977, Blumenau was banned from working with the New York Stock Exchange. According to a document from the NYSE Blumenau was discharged from an organization in 1975 and started working at another firm After two years of requesting documents as to why he was removed from his post at Bache & Co and no response the NYSE barred him from employment with any member firm until the documentation was provided Blumenau says that he "can't remember what it was about They were asking and I said 'screw it.' There wasn't any point defending my position Blumenau has made attempts to repossess the car But when they got to Blackhawk to get the car back and Blumenau says it was replaced by something else The only thing remaining of the 330 was the plaque Blumenau provided us with a new title from the state of Florida after he moved there as well as a court order to have the car returned We've confirmed with the court that the order is valid the resources to get a car like this back are not cheap and timing means that there are few chances to get everyone in the right place And Blumenau says that every time they got close "someone would tip off the owners and the car would disappear." While Blumenau told us that even Interpol is involved it is going to be very tough to get a car back from what is one of the richest men in the world and one of the most powerful men in all of South Korea We have reached out to Samsung and they say it's been forwarded to the "appropriate party" who will contact us soon though we haven't heard back as of publication time AVBOB celebrates a milestone by rewarding its members on a large scale BRASILIA - A 25-year-old man burst into a preschool in southern Brazil and killed four children with a hatchet-like weapon before turning himself in to police an attack President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva condemned as "monstrous." also wounded four other children at the private preschool said police and government officials in the state of Santa Catarina He then rode a motorcycle to a state police station and handed himself in Dozens of people gathered outside the preschool whose external wall is covered in bright paintings of children and butterflies Emergency workers and police had set up a security cordon the grief-stricken father of five-year-old Bernardo He told journalists how Bernardo and a friend had been hopping like bunnies when he dropped him off at school in the morning "I just thank God for every moment I spent with my son," he said through tears Brazilian media carried images of small bodies covered in white sheets on the preschool's playground and a sobbing mother leaving the building carrying her son said she had described a horrific scene when he spoke with her she went to the playground and saw the (victims) She was in a state of shock," he told journalists The attacker mainly struck his victims in the head emergency official Diogo de Souza Clarindo told journalists ages three and five -- were in stable condition Authorities said the attacker was a Santa Catarina resident with at least four prior arrests police chief Ulisses Gabriel told a news conference President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva condemned the attack "There is no greater pain than a family that loses children or grandchildren even more so when it is in an act of violence against innocent and defenseless children," he wrote on Twitter "My thoughts and prayers are with the victims' families and the community of Blumenau in the face of this monstrous attack." According to the book, Nobody Does it Better: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of James Bond the producers of Goldfinger wanted Orson Welles to play the titular villain Goldfinger was played by German actor Gert Fröbe whose acclaimed performance in the film would set the tone for several subsequent Bond villains Fröbe was a former member of the Nazi Party though he had performed a selfless act that set him apart from almost all other Nazis Fröbe joined the Nazi Party in 1929 at the age of 16 and left the party in 1937. According to The New York Times Fröbe hid a Jewish man named Mario Blumenau and his mother from the Nazis during the war Blumenau said Fröbe was likely responsible for saving him and his mother an impactful article in the Daily Mail shined a light on Fröbe’s Nazi past According to the Los Angeles Times the Daily Mail quoted Fröbe as saying “Naturally I was a Nazi.” Fröbe claimed the newspaper quoted him incorrectly ”What I told an English reporter during an interview was that during the Third Reich I had the luck to be able to help two Jewish people although I was a member of the Nazi Party.” However the Daily Mail article did some temporary damage to the Bond franchise In response to the article, Israel banned Goldfinger for months. However, Blumenau came forward with his story. Afterward, Israel overturned the ban. Fortunately for the producers of Goldfinger, the ban didn’t stop Goldfinger from becoming a hit. According to Box Office Mojo Goldfinger earned over $51 million at the box office — an impressive take for the 1960s Fröbe appeared in a number of other notable 1960s films He had roles in Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was based on a novel by Fleming While numerous actors appeared in the 007 film multiple times Fröbe never again acted in the franchise — though his performance as Goldfinger left an indelible mark.
