A visualisation of the Tarafo Bay development
with golf courses designed by International Design Group
An aerial view of the site on the island of Boa Vista
The first phase will include construction of the Tarafo Bay Links course
IDG architect Jon Hunt’s routing has five holes interacting with the coastline
Tarafo Bay has achieved planning permission and is currently in the funding stage
International Design Group (IDG) has completed designs for three golf courses for the proposed Tarafo Bay development on the island of Boa Vista
UK-based industrialist and entrepreneur Tim Strawson is leading the development on the southern coast of the island
is expected to be completed over a 25-year timespan
The land for the development was originally split into 18 individual parcels that could hold standalone resorts
Strawson bought one of the parcels around 10 years ago
then decided in 2021 that this part of the island would benefit from one
big integrated resort rather than 18 individual properties
and set out to develop a more ambitious plan
The site includes an area of rocky terrain with some environmental designations that prevent hotels from being built
tropical location that is on the same time zone as most of Europe,” said IDG principal and golf course architect Jon Hunt
has some cloud cover and a nice breeze – it couldn’t be more perfect for golf
Tim knew you can’t just build one golf course; you must build three or four to make it a destination.”
The golf will be built first on the western side of the development
“The first layout will be a linksy style championship course,” said Hunt
“Linksy in terms of the general shaping
but we’ve also got five coastal holes
The rest will wind through quite rocky lunar landscapes
and that is 100 per cent the sort of visual that I would be going for
We have exactly that type of volcanic terrain to allow us to do a similar combination of the perfect turfgrass contrasting with the rocky
“Every parcel has a boundary that is preordained
so we had to fit our golf within those boundaries
I wanted to get as far away from the clubhouse as I could with a view to pulling in as much of the coastline… and our plan pretty much achieves that
We’ve got a green finishing on the coast
a tee that plays away from the beach but the hole after then plays back towards the coast and will provide a fantastic sunset view.”
This first course will be around 7,200 yards
which Hunt describes as “the resort’s jewel in the crown”
A second will be around 7,000 yards and slightly less challenging
which will be built further from the coast in the ‘backlands’
The clubhouse will be near the coast and overlook the par-three eighteenth
“A sunset view was important for the clubhouse location,” said Hunt
“We knew this land was to be the first parcel to be developed and we would have to control a lot of golf from the same area
Two of the courses are designed with nine-hole loops that start and end at the clubhouse
The first phase will include the construction of one clubhouse that will be shared between the three courses
a second clubhouse will be built on the eastern side of the site
“We’re a little bit different to other golf designers as we also work closely on the architecture and landscape side of projects,” said Andrew Craven
“Our office is taking care of some of the hotel concepts
villa options and the landscape of the development
This project is a really good example of all the skill sets of our company.”
“There are several really good RIU-operated resorts in Cape Verde and we’re aiming to piggyback on them,” said Hunt
“The golf will primarily serve those on the island and in the new resorts
but it is expected that we will receive some play from people staying at other hotels already on Boa Vista.”
Community and sustainability are two important drivers of the development
“All the water will be created by reverse osmosis (RO) desalinisation
powered by a massive solar farm,” said Hunt
“The entirety of the development is aiming to be hydrocarbon-free and not reliant on any diesel backup or grid support for electricity
Water will be generated by our own machines – this is why you won’t see many lakes on the courses
because we don’t want to lose it to evaporation
We’re going to be using salt tolerant grasses
so we don’t have to squeeze every last drop of salt out of the RO delivery.”
Strawson has helped to set up the Boa Vista Development Trust where the funds that are invested in the trust will be matched by the Cape Verde government to the tune of £20 million ($26 million)
These funds will be available for locals to start businesses on the island or to train themselves to work within the development
“This is a great initiative for giving something back to the local people,” said Hunt
“Sustainability isn’t just about minimising water use of material miles; it is also about bringing the local community up and making sure that they are looked after and are part of it
and we’re expecting the Cape Verde and Boa Vista populace to be part of this resort
The development trust is a major differentiator for us and brings our sustainability credentials up significantly.”
Strawson is now seeking the additional investment required to move forward with the plan
which is expected to largely come from people interested in buying holiday homes

The current belle of the wavepool ball is Boa Vista Village
Located near São Paulo, Brazil, it's a whole development with a hotel, condos, a golf course, restaurants, and more. The price tag for membership? $100k
it’s been dubbed by many as the “best wavepool” currently on the scene
In a press release
CEO and Managing Partner of Penetron Brazil
“One of the highlights of the Boa Vista Village is the state-of-the-art American Wave Machines pool
one of the largest of its kind in the world
Utilizing the patented ‘PerfectSwell’ technology
this wave pool recreates a beach environment far from the coast with waves large enough to attract surfers
“Underlying the wave pool and wave-generating machinery is a reinforced concrete basin. It's this concrete structure that must withstand constant contact with water – an ideal application for PENETRON ADMIX
a crystalline waterproofing admixture that has successfully been used in similar wave pool applications around the world.”
Before describing the “PerfectSwell” technology from American Wave Machines – manipulating air pressure to create ocean-like waves – the press release goes on to ensure that the facility is built to last…so expect to see more of it
“Because Penetron-treated concrete is much less permeable and more resistant to moisture and chemicals
the Boa Vista Village wave pool is going to last a long

Boa Vista has peaks of unhealthy air in half the year
telegram Join our Telegram channel! telegram
In Boa Vista, in six months of the year, the air breathed by the population presents peaks of unhealthiness, mainly because of the smoke from burnings and forest fires. This is what a research from the National Institute of Amazonian Research (Inpa) published on the 6th
The report “Air Quality Monitoring in the City of Boa Vista - Roraima” recorded data from the period 2020 to 2024
Boa Vista is not a megacity that produces large quantities of urban pollutants from factories and/or industries
has made the city an unhealthy place for several days,” concludes the study by Reinaldo Imbrozio Barbosa and Arthur Camurça Citó
On April 2, the air in the capital of Roraima was classified as the 15th worst in the world
the city had four days with pollution levels that exceeded those of some of the most polluted large metropolises on the planet
a level of particulate matter in the air was recorded above 300 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of PM 2.5 (inhalable dust particles with a diameter equal to or less than 2.5 microns) – the unit of measurement for pollutant concentration
The state had a record number of hot spots in February this year
considering the historical series of the month since 1998
The INPA survey indicates that the cloud of pollution generated in Roraima was so large that it ended up reaching relatively distant regions
such as the Upper Rio Negro and the Upper Rio Solimões
Due to the drought, the fire spread and destroyed several areas of food cultivation. The Branco River, the state's main source of drinking water, reached a mark of 39 cm below the minimum measurement level
“We are treating air unhealthiness as pollution that can cause harm to human health
This impact on health has different levels
both in terms of the amount of pollution and the public that is affected,” explains Citó
The “unhealthy peak” is a period of time that concentrates jumps in maximum pollution levels
Boa Vista suffers the highest peak due to fires and burnings
located mainly in the center and north of Roraima
in years of extreme drought and strong winds
is caused by the transport of pollutants from fires and burnings located in the south of the Amazon
especially in the west of Pará and areas close to Manaus.
“During the primary pollution peak (January to March)
posing risks to the general population,” the researcher points out
pollution levels drop and can reach zero during the rainy season
We characterize this quarter as a ‘secondary peak’ because pollution levels are lower
posing greater risks to a more sensitive segment of the population
such as children and the elderly,” he explains.
Because part of the state is above the Equator
in Roraima the dry season runs from October to March and the rainy season runs from April to September
unlike what happens in the rest of the country.
in the four years analyzed by INPA scientists
on 70 days the average air quality was classified as “unhealthy for sensitive groups”
on 255 days the maximum reading of pollutant concentrations taken throughout the day reached the classification of “unhealthy for sensitive groups”
“very unhealthy” or “very poor” (see table)
The researchers observed air quality data over 1290 days
The research analyzed daily averages (variation throughout the day) of pollution levels and also daily maximums (peak unhealthiness of the day)
Boa Vista had 689 days (53,4%) with air quality considered good
air quality presented some degree of risk to residents
the city had a peak of unhealthy air on 1010 days (78,3%)
while the quality considered good suffered a sharp drop on 280 days (21,7%) (see table above)
The technology is connected to the internet and was installed in Boa Vista in 2020
there are other sensors installed in Roraima
but none of them have time series suitable for formatting any type of pattern that could result in a scientific analysis

Despite the high global impacts of canine vector-borne diseases (CVBD) due to their wide distribution and zoonotic potential
the current epidemiological situation of CVBD in many tropical and subtropical regions remains unknown
This study examines the seroprevalence and molecular prevalence of Ehrlichia canis and other pathogens causing CVBDs (Leishmania infantum
and Hepatozoon canis) in dogs living on the island of Boa Vista (Cape Verde Republic)
Blood samples and infesting ticks were taken from 150 dogs across the island (stray
Serum samples were tested using a rapid immunochromatographic test (Uranotest® Quattro) that detects antibodies against E
canis were measured using the immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT)
tick-borne pathogens in blood samples (Anaplasma spp.
and Ehrlichia canis) were detected by microscopy observation and/or PCR plus sequencing
as revealed by both immunochromatography and IFAT
Most dogs returning a seropositive test result (82.92%; 102/123) had antibody titres > 1:1280 but showed no clinical signs or notable laboratory abnormalities
Of the 123 animals testing seropositive for E
67 (54.47%) also presented antibodies against Anaplasma spp.
and 13 (10.56%) showed the presence of Hepatozoon spp
Ehrlichia canis infection was detected in 17.1% (25/146) of dogs tested by direct sequencing of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products
Co-infections were detected in seven of these dogs: four dogs tested PCR-positive for both E
Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato was the only tick species found infesting the canine study population
The high prevalence of tick-borne pathogens detected in dogs from Boa Vista Island highlights a need for improved control measures designed to prevent the transmission of these pathogens
monitoring seropositive but healthy dogs is essential
as reinfection can occur due to the lack of persistent immunity
The disease typically progresses chronically in dogs due to the pathogenic effect of adult worms residing in the pulmonary arteries
The present study was designed to determine the seroprevalence and molecular prevalence of infection by Ehrlichia canis and other canine vector-borne pathogens (Leishmania infantum
and Hepatozoon canis) in dogs living on the island of Boa Vista
Boa Vista is an island occupying 620 km2 that forms part of the Cape Verde archipelago in the Atlantic
It is one of Cape Verde’s easternmost islands (16° 06′ 12″ N; 22° 48′ 13″ O)
Cape Verde has a tropical dry climate influenced by the north-easterly trade winds
Its rainy season typically occurs between July and October
although mean annual precipitation is relatively low
with plants adapting to the scarce water conditions
Climate and vegetation vary among the different islands owing to differences in altitude and topography
Sampling sites (red dots) and distribution areas of dogs testing seropositive for Ehrlichia canis and Anaplasma platys infection in Boa Vista
The size of the red dot indicates the number of dog samples analysed per sampling site
Pie charts show the proportions of seropositive dogs by sampling site
Blood and ticks were collected from dogs in April 2022 during a sterilization programme carried out by NERINA to mitigate overpopulation
All participating dogs were subjected to a thorough physical exam in which the data—date
and lifestyle—were collected along with clinical findings
Three millilitres of blood were drawn by cephalic or jugular venipuncture and immediately transferred to two EDTA tubes (0.5 ml each) and a tube without anticoagulant (2 ml)
Serum was then separated by centrifugation
Serum and EDTA-mixed blood samples were initially kept at 4 °C for complete blood counts
blood smears and a rapid immunochromatographic test
all samples were stored at −20 °C until serological and molecular processing in the laboratory
Complete blood counts were performed in 102 of the 150 participating dogs (due to financial restrictions) including red blood cell count (RBC)
mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC)
a Mythic TM 18 Vet haematology analyser (Orphée S.A.
Thin blood smears (n = 139) were Diff-Quick stained and examined under a light microscope to detect Ehrlichia spp.
Serum samples (n = 150) were subjected to a rapid immunochromatographic test (ICT) (Uranotest® Quattro
an immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) was used to determine anti-Ehrlichia canis serum IgG antibodies using a commercially available antigen kit (Anti-Ehrlichia Antibodies
The IFAT test was performed according to the manufacturer’s instructions
A cut-off of 1:80 was taken to indicate seropositivity
Positive sera were further tested in a serial dilution starting at 1:20
DNA from whole blood was isolated using the QIAamp® DNA mini kit (Qiagen
Germany) following the manufacturer’s instructions
DNA was eluted in 200 µl and stored at −20 °C until further use
Blood DNA samples (n = 146) were analysed using different polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods to detect tick-borne pathogens including piroplasm species
a final volume of 20 µl reaction mixture was prepared containing 5 µl of genomic DNA
Spain) and a 10 µM final concentration of each primer (EHRF and EHRR)
The amplification conditions were an initial denaturation step of 95 °C for 5 min
followed by 35 cycles of denaturation at 95 °C for 45 s
annealing at 62 °C for 45 s and extension at 72 °C for 45 s
which targeted an 424 bp of Anaplasma 16S rDNA
The PCR conditions were the same as those described for the Ehrlichia genus-specific PCR assay
followed by 40 cycles of denaturation at 95 °C for 45 s
annealing at 57 °C for 45 s and extension at 72 °C for 45 s
PCR amplifications were performed in a thermocycler GenAmp® PCR System 2700 (Applied Biosystems
PCR products (10–15 µl) were run on a 1.5% agarose gel containing SYBR Safe Gel Stain (Invitrogen
USA) and visualized with a dark reader transilluminator
they were sexed and the tick stage (larvae
Statistical tests were performed using the IBM SPSS Statistics package (version 28.0)
A descriptive analysis was performed using absolute and relative frequencies for qualitative variables
standard deviation and percentiles for quantitative variables
The chi-squared test was used to examine relationships between E
seropositivity and the remaining categorical variables
The non-parametric Kruskal–Wallis test was used to compare blood counts between infected dogs with E
and dogs seronegative and PCR negative for E
Of the 150 serum samples screened using the rapid immunochromatographic test (Uranotest® Quattro), 127 (84.7%) returned seropositive results as follows: 56 (37.3%) were seropositive only for E. canis, 4 (2.6%) for Anaplasma spp. only, and 67 (44.6%) for E. canis and Anaplasma spp. simultaneously (Fig. 1)
all tested dog serum samples were negative for L
canis infection was 82% (123/150) as determined by immunochromatography and IFAT
Anti-Ehrlichia IgG antibody titres were 1/80 to 1/5120 as follow: 1/80 (n = 4)
Most seropositive dogs with high antibody titres (≥ 1:1280; n = 112) showed no clinical signs or notable laboratory abnormalities (64.3%; 77/112)
DNA in 17.1% of the blood samples tested (25/146 dogs)
Subsequent sequencing of all PCR-positive samples served to identify only the species E
139 were suitable for cytological examination (11 blood smears were non-assessable)
a finding subsequently confirmed by PCR and sequencing
no piroplasm merozoites or microfilariae were detected in any blood smear
Seven dogs were simultaneously infected by more than one pathogen detected by PCR and/or blood smear microscopy examination: four dogs tested positive for both E. canis and A. platys, two dogs tested positive for both E. canis and Hepatozoon spp., and one dog tested positive for E. canis, A. platys and Hepatozoon spp. (Table 3)
27 showed some clinical signs (18%) as follows: pale mucous membranes (n = 5)
Complete blood counts were obtained in 102 dogs
laboratory abnormalities were detected in 37 (36.3%)
The main haematological findings were thrombocytopenia (n = 28) and anaemia (n = 10)
Other laboratory abnormalities such as leukocytosis (n = 4) or leukopenia (n = 1) were detected much less frequently
All dogs showing laboratory abnormalities were found to be seropositive or infected by at least one pathogen
25 returned a positive result by PCR while 98 were negative by PCR
A total of 9 of these 98 seropositive dogs (PCR negative for E
canis) showed clinical signs (9.2%): 1 with pale mucous membranes
7 with cutaneous lesions and 1 with ocular lesions
blood counts were obtained in 74 of these seropositive dogs
were detected in 24 dogs out of the 74 (32.4%)
blood count information was obtained in 13 (remaining dogs did not have blood counts)
thrombocytopenia with or without anaemia (38% and 39%
an ectoparasite infestation during physical examination and parasites were collected for subsequent identification in the laboratory
349 ectoparasites were identified morphologically
of which 73.07% (255/349) were ticks and 26.93% (94/349) were fleas
The number of ectoparasites collected from the same individual ranged from 1 to 75 for ticks
The only tick species found was Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l
these were classified as follows: 110 females (43.14%)
The 94 fleas collected were identified as Ctenocephalides canis (4.26%; 4/94)
Ctenocephalides felis (5.32%; 5/94) and Echidnophaga gallinacea (90.42%; 85/94)
This makes it difficult to interpret the role of these pathogens in the clinical and pathological manifestations of the animals examined
haematological findings of thrombocytopenia with or without anaemia were detected together with clinical signs compatible with CME (mucosal pallor)
the remaining participants showed no findings suggestive of active disease
Only the factors dog breed and lifestyle were found significantly associated with seroprevalence (P < 0.05)
with higher rates observed in the mongrel group and stray or shelter dogs
This may be because most dogs living and bred on the island are not pure breeds and being so prevalent
CME will inevitably mostly affect the largest population group
we must consider that most pure-bred dogs had their owners
who could provide individualised care such as tick prophylaxis
The habits of street dogs may explain the presence of fleas on these animals
considering that some animals cohabited with species such as cats
Although their role as vectors is not very important in domestic animals
they may be involved in transmitting Dipylidium caninum
while they mainly cause flea allergy dermatitis in dogs via their bite (haematophagous)
for the prevention and control of CVBD we should still consider their vector role
The data emerging from this study will help design measures to prevent the risk of transmission of these pathogens between dogs and humans who live on or travel to this island
Some limitations of our study include a need for knowledge of the animals’ history to make a more accurate diagnosis of how the different parasites affect Cape Verdean individuals
difficulties in handling and transporting samples made it difficult to perform a comprehensive analysis of all blood samples
The seroprevalence of Ehrlichia canis in dogs on the island of Boa Vista (Cape Verde) was found to be extremely high
Our results indicate that most dogs had subclinical or chronic infections with no clinical signs or laboratory abnormalities
these dogs could act as important carriers of the infection
as dogs showing clinicopathological abnormalities were infected mostly by E
this pathogen should be considered the most relevant in this geographical area
was here consolidated as the main vector responsible for the transmission of Ehrlichia canis and potentially of Anaplasma platys on the island
thus allowing for co-infections with other tick-borne pathogens such as Hepatozoon spp

Californian Lakey Peterson was categorical in defining what she considers to be the best wave pool in the world
This is the pool that Italo Ferreira uses in his reels
Peterson didn't give much of a justification in his YouTube episode as to why
but he was coming from surfing in Abu Dhabi and didn't make any comparisons
The American shared time with Brisa Hennessy
Mateus Herdy and Ian Gouveia and surfed the wave for eight hours
She calculated that there were 120 waves in total in one day
Both Lakey and Brisa shared training sessions with Leandro Dora
They spent time in the pool and then went to Florianópolis to then depart for Portugal where the third stage of the CT will take place from March 15 to 25
2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ValOre Metals Corp
(“ValOre”; TSX‐V: VO; OTCQB: KVLQF; Frankfurt: KEQ0
“the Company”) today provided assay results from Trado® auger and rock samples collected from the Boa Vista target (“Boa Vista”) at ValOre’s 100%-owned Pedra Branca Platinum Group Elements (“PGE”
“2PGE+Au”) Project (“Pedra Branca”) in northeastern Brazil
“The PGE mineralization reported today from the Boa Vista target includes numerous high grade rock samples and the best Trado® hole
ever drilled on the Pedra Branca property,” stated ValOre’s VP of Exploration
“Boa Vista is located along the same geological trend as the Synform target
which also returned high-grade PGE mineralization in previous exploration programs
Follow up mapping and Trado® drilling is planned as part of a broader exploration program
to be focused on potential targets along the 20km-long Boa Vista-Synform trend.”
2024 Boa Vista Exploration Program Highlights
Trado® auger drilling has intercepted ultramafic rocks in 4 of 8 Trado® auger drill holes completed to date (18 m of 26 m drilled in total)
All 3 Trado® assays received to date returned PGE mineralization
ValOre conducted geological reconnaissance
prospecting and initial Trado® drilling around the historical rock sample 82701
with results reported herein extending known PGE mineralization to approximately 100 m in strike-length
Detailed geological mapping and Trado® drilling are planned to further investigate these high-grade results
Table 1: Trado® Auger Assay Highlights for Boa Vista (reported herein) and Synform (reported March 23
1Trado assay interval lengths are estimated to represent 90-100% of true width
Trado® end of hole (“EOH”) depths typically represent that the auger has entered impenetrable unweathered bedrock
so mineralization and ultramafic rocks (“UM”) present at EOH remain open at depth and require follow-up diamond or RC drilling

aka the world’s best (and potentially priciest) wavepool
Sure, there’s all the gear (board, wetsuit, fins, wax, etc.), the access to the coast that can often be pricey (either living near the beach or gas money to drive there), and then the potential income lost while lollygagging around in the lineup (unless
you can monetize that through social media influencing
So, it sorta makes sense that what many people are dubbing the “world’s best” wavepool
would also potentially be the world’s most expensive
In the video above from Laguna Beach skimboarder
Blair Conklin gets the golden ticket to surf Boa Vista and he has this description:
“2 World Champion Skimboarders get to test Brazil's state of the art Wavepool
The Boa Vista Village boasts the largest Wavepool with PerfectSwell technology
The development includes private properties ranging from the $1.2 million to $2.2 million price range
The residents will be paying $100K a year to have access to the wave
Safe to say Skimboarders won't be buying a home there anytime soon!”
We’ve seen a lot of pros surfing Boa Vista
it’s unclear how to actually book a session at the wave
or what the price would be if anyone – not just residents at the Boa Vista compound – can surf the pool
For comparison, one YouTuber went to Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch
claiming that it was rented out for $70,000
surfing is going to cost you some money (or even a timeshare) – just like playing a round of golf on the links

“We just hung out with Italo [Ferreira] last night, and we’ve watched a bunch of his videos here. [Like this one where he surfs the wave like a videogame; or this one with a freakishly perfect tube.] He said that this is his favorite wavepool in the world
“It’s the same technology as the Waco wave in Texas
This pool is about two-to-three times larger
and I think the amount of pumps they have making the wave is
they are creating the best wave in the world at the moment.”

Reggie Cannon’s early exit from Portuguese club Boavista have cost the American defender a hefty fine
but a lengthy court case ruled in favor of Boavista
but his current club QPR will reportedly complete the compensation payment of $71,000
Boavista will also have to pay Cannon $85,226 in unpaid wages
The former FC Dallas homegrown made 89 combined appearances for Boavista over three seasons
featuring mainly as a right back and centerback
Cannon proceeded to make 21 appearances for QPR last season
Cannon remains a defensive option for Marti Cifuentes’ squad again in the EFL Championship
men’s national team debutant in 2018
Cannon hasn’t featured for the USMNT since a 2-0 friendly loss to Japan in September 2022
QPR opens its league campaign on Saturday against West Bromwich Albion
This is disgusting they didn’t have the means to pay Cannon and was late I watched the interview he did on Youtube when he was saying he has a family to take care of and the late pay was an inconvenience
he didnt do anything wrong and I dont consider this a breach on contract
I tuned in for the QPR highlights today in hopes of seeing Cannon
but he didn’t even make the subs bench
Don’t know if he’s inured or he’s being punished for this legal conundrum
A guy bails on a team that’s literally not paying his salary
which means they broke his contract…but then a Portuguese court rules that because Cannon bailed after Boavista already breached the contract that he himself is somehow in breach of his own contract and owes Boavista $1.4 million
the court acknowledged Boavista’s culpability
because they’re forcing Boavista to pay Cannon
That’s some seriously messed-up legal logic there
In the US – and most places – once somebody’s in breach
(Which isn’t complicated…why should you have to hold up your end if they aren’t holding up theirs?) There’s sometimes clauses in contracts that allow the breaching party a certain amount of time to “cure” the breach before you’re allowed to terminate your agreement
but here’s the real rub: if you don’t walk and continue to perform your duties despite knowing of the breach
that can be construed as “waiver of breach”
you’re tacitly agreeing you’re okay with it
does not speak well of the system of Portuguese law
And this is absolutely the sort of thing that makes Portugal in general and Boavista in particular a place to avoid if you’re an athlete
Who on Earth would go to Boavista knowing they’ve got a history of not paying their players
I also was also curious if Boavista would likely be able to successfully collect
because England left the EU and judgments from other EU nations are no longer automatically accepted in England
An English court would have to agree with this seemingly odd ruling
Cannon could still return to the US and the process would start all over again
So Boavista will have to win again in court not once but potentially twice and justify what appears to be a really wonky judgment
It’s still a major headache for Cannon
and a serious Mickey Mouse play from Boavista
We don’t have the money to pay you on time
but we do have the money for legal action if you leave because we’re not paying you
And my guess would be this is the end of Americans playing for Boavista for a good long while

Since 2015, it has been impossible to celebrate a great feat in surfing for longer than 24 hours without some wave pool architect stealing your thunder. While we hope Xavier Huxtable has savored yesterday’s beng-bengs
it is now time to return to our inboxes and their occasionally show-stopping correspondence
Today’s treat arrived in the form of a synthwave-scored short by Bruno Zanin featuring Tomas Hermes
and Miguel Pupo peacefully trading man-made waves at the Boa Vista Village Surf Club
not too far from São Paulo’s 12 million residents
This month will mark the first anniversary of Boa Vista Village’s grand opening party. That means for the past 12 months
while we’ve been trying to find a park to surf one-foot windswell
Brazil’s 1%ers have been consistently utilizing their private surfing facility
Their feedback has been invaluable to the American Wave Machines team
who have implemented changes directly in line with the members’ thoughts and additional feedback from pros. Some of the upgrades introduced by AWM’s lead engineer Miquel Lazaro Cordero and his team can already be seen in the newly released clip
and the Double Vision (two kegs breaking simultaneously)
There’s also a new Lowers-styled wall ending with a barrel section called The Peel Keg
The latter is a brand new wave that combines their Lowers wave with a little more open face to work with
allowing for a wider variety of approaches such as carving maneuvers
The broader canvas allows surfers more time to recover and spring back onto the face after maneuvers
offering a more user-friendly wave for non-pros as well as a wider variety of possibilities for elite surfers
Regardless of the type of paganism that has created conditions like these at the push of a button
it begs the question: How many hours would you need in the ocean to match the quantity and quality of waves found in this pool
Women from the Yanomami Indigenous Land create a Human Rights booklet
Twenty-four Yanomami (Yanomam, Yanomami, Sanöma and Ninam) and Ye'kwana women created a Human Rights booklet for the women of the largest indigenous land in Brazil, the Yanomami Indigenous Land
The publication is the result of a workshop on Human Rights
Those responsible for the booklet represented the 10 indigenous associations in the territory, which in an unprecedented move nominated only women for their respective representations. Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG)And Socioenvironmental Institute (ISA) provided the training with the support of Ministries of Human Rights and Citizenship (MDHC)
The document reflects the lessons learned in combating violence against women
explaining the Maria da Penha and Feminicide laws
in addition to addressing cultural aspects of Yanomami coexistence
rights to son-in-law services and forest resources
the women raised several concerns about health and violations of the right to differentiated care
reflections that were also conveyed in the final material
“We indigenous people want to live in peace in our community
without having any conflict with our elders and children
We want white people to understand that we also need to live happily
just like they do,” says one of the few excerpts in Portuguese from the material written predominantly in Yanomami and illustrated with indigenous art painted during the workshop
The workshop began by reflecting on the rules
rights and duties of coexistence between different communities
The indigenous people were then introduced to the concepts and history of Human Rights and Indigenous Rights
the training went into greater depth on women's rights and women's right to health
Ana Lucia Paixão Vilela, representative of Kumirayoma Women's Association (AMYK)
helped with the translation for the indigenous people who do not speak Portuguese and felt excited to share what she learned with the women of Maturacá
What surprised her most during the training was how women began to be included in Human Rights
there was nothing specific for women’s rights because it was men who created rights
they were the only ones who spoke and we were not fully included
but we evolved and the creation of rights for women was considered,” she said
through the structuring of a line of care and the restructuring of the Women's Health Program
we presented the Women's Health Program and it was very profound how they stated that there was a need for responses
last year we consolidated a network of actors involving universities
public bodies and non-governmental organizations to respond to this need,” explained Manuela
a young Ye'kwana who participated in the workshop and works as an Indigenous Health Agent (AIS) in the Auaris region
the health-focused part of the workshop will give her the opportunity to improve the care she provides to psychologists in the region
I accompany the psychologists and we hold meetings with women
in these meetings I can talk about women’s rights in health and safety,” said the young Ye’kwana
who plays a strong role among the Ye'kwana communities
being knowledgeable about songs that keep the farms strong and the indigenous people well nourished
Anthropologist Karenina Vieira Andrade, who participated in the workshop and is a faculty member at UFMG, works with the Ye'kwana and summarized part of Elisa's story. She explained that the elder lived in Fuduuwaaduinha, where the 5th Yanomami and Ye'kwana Leadership Forum
the communities are very close and relatives visit each other constantly
which helps to preserve and pass on to the younger generation knowledge that the elders
“She knows a set of songs associated with the fields for when they open the fields because the Ye'kwana women are the owners of the fields
and they need to take constant care of them because the field is alive,” explains the anthropologist
Since the farm is considered a living being by the Ye'kwana
the songs associated with care rituals keep the being pleased to produce good food
care and harvest - is associated with a set of different songs and care
the entire community runs the risk of not having good food
Ensuring that this knowledge of women is passed down from generation to generation is to endorse what is in the constitutional provisions that indigenous peoples have the right to live according to their customs and traditions,” said Karenina
This body of knowledge keeps Elisa as a strong and highly respected figure among the Ye'kwana
there is a strong interest on her part in young girls learning the rituals to keep Ye'kwana communities strong
The Human Rights Workshop for Women of the Yanomami Indigenous Land was also a follow-up activity to the 15th Yanomami Women's Meeting
which took place in the second week of October
food sovereignty and care at the Indigenous Health Center (Casai) and maternity hospital
assistant professor at the UFMG School of Nursing
who taught part of the workshop and attended the 19th Yanomami Women's Meeting
the events consolidated the indigenous people's desire to restructure what was lost during the Covid-XNUMX pandemic and to rescue the relationships that were strained during Jair Bolsonaro's government
“We heard both in this workshop and at the Women's Meeting reports of violations over the years in access to maternity and Casai in terms of respect for customs
as well as places of rest and receiving communication about the type of treatment they receive with an interpreter,” she pointed out
Erica also explained that violations occur even in areas with poor care and a lack of tests
“But it is important to highlight that there has been an improvement in this management
they are happy and confident with the performance of the DSEI”
differentiated care is a right guaranteed in the National Policy for Healthcare for Indigenous Peoples
which means that indigenous people have the right to receive care in a way that takes into account their ways of life
“These violations are often linked to disrespect for customs
but there are cases that go beyond this and are acts of disrespect that would be offensive to any human being,” he said
In the context of the Yanomami Indigenous Land
Érica explains that to serve a Yanomami woman
a flight schedule is required and there is a different dynamic to access the places
as each community has its own specificities
“Specialized care can also include special technologies
According to the current prenatal protocol
many Yanomami women would be classified as high-risk due to their low weight
All of this would mean that they would have to be removed from the forest to the city
High-risk care needs to be incorporated into the forest,” she says
The Human Rights workshop is part of an extension project at UFMG and is funded by MDHC
The goal is to train Yanomami indigenous groups in Human Rights
young directors from the 10 associations of the Yanomami Indigenous Land have already gone through the Human Rights training process
The 10st Human Rights Training Workshop for Young Yanomami and Ye'Kwana Directors lasted six days and was attended by all XNUMX associations representing the Yanomami Indigenous Land
The leaders met in Boa Vista during the first fortnight of July
This workshop presented basic concepts of Human Rights while relating them to the history of the largest indigenous land in the country, with the Territorial and Environmental Management Plan (PGTA) and the Consultation Protocol
you need access to medicines that are also Human Rights
are violations of Human Rights,” explained Marcelo Moura
an anthropologist and consultant for the Ministry of Human Rights
to the indigenous people during the workshop
an association with two decades of experience
sent new leaders to participate and learn about the topic
The vice president of HAY presented the PGTA and the Yanomami Indigenous Land Consultation Protocol to the directors of the other nine associations
It is our responsibility and it has everything here about what we think about health
education and income generation,” he said during the explanation
first secretary of the Wanasseduume Ye'kwana Association
listening to leaders like Dário Kopenawa and Maurício Ye'Kwana inspired him to maintain closeness between all the associations of the Yanomami Indigenous Land
“I thought it was very important to see the presentation of the directors who have been fighting for us for the longest time
they were a great inspiration to the new leaders
I also thought it was good to see the unity and rapprochement between all the associations of the Yanomami Indigenous Land,” he told ISA
the idea of bringing together experienced leaders with new leaders is precisely so that there is an exchange of information and that the new directors can be better qualified
Montanha and Manuela Otero were consultants representing ISA
“The objective of this work is to reach the associations of the Yanomami Indigenous Land
which is why representatives of the 10 associations that currently exist are participating
In addition to being directed at the 10 associations
there is another more specific characteristic
which is to train new directors,” said Montanha
the leaders were able to assimilate how knowledge about Human Rights can function as a tool for defending the territory and intend to make the knowledge echo in their respective communities
resident of Maturacá and coordinator of the Kumirayoma Yanomami Women's Association (AMYK)
“I really enjoyed discovering more tools so that we can defend the territory
I think it is an important topic to work with women and youth
and that is what I will take from here to my community,” she said
One of the recurring issues raised by the indigenous people was the violation of the rights of Yanomami children and women
The reports corroborate information that women are abused by miners
while children die or are illegally removed from the territory by invaders
“It is important that we are all connected
especially the abuses against our women and the deaths of our children caused by miners
as well as to prevent governments from violating our rights,” declared the second treasurer of the Kurikama Yanomami Association
Lídia Montanha Castro and Marcelo Moura explained the concepts of colonization and slavery to the Yanomami
contextualizing them with current cases and relating situations in which miners force indigenous people to work after receiving items such as blankets
the culture and everything else until there is nothing left,” said Jabra when explaining how colonization occurs through the church
This first workshop was the first initiative of the UFMG and ISA partnership
with the objective of training the 10 associations of the Yanomami Indigenous Land through two audiences: young directors and women

One of a number of new routes available from East Midlands Airport has instantly become the furthest destination, at 2,793 miles away.
Boa Vista, one of the largest of the Cape Verde islands in the Atlantic Ocean west of Senegal, is a new destination that TUI has launched from East Midlands Airport, with twice-weekly flights getting underway from the beginning of May next week through to the end of October.
A 12 mile-long beach gives Boa Vista all the hallmarks of a perfect desert island, while humpback whales can be seen offshore and Sal Rei, the capital, boasts a maze of colourful lanes showing off the melting pot of culture the country is known for.
TUI has also announced Burgas in Bulgaria as a new destination from East Midlands Airport for summer 2025. A short transfer to Sunny Beach, one of the most popular coastal resorts, gives visitors access to golden sands and the clear waters of the Black Sea along with plenty of family activities.
There are also opportunities for more people to enjoy some of the airport’s existing popular destinations. Jet2 has announced extra capacity on its Corfu route this year, with weekly Friday services planned from July to September.
For later in the year, Jet2 has also expanded capacity on its flights to Malaga, Alicante, Faro, Malta, Paphos and Tenerife for winter, along with two weekly Christmas Market services to Berlin from late November to mid-December for the first time this year, plus a new route to Budapest between this October and next April.
For those already thinking ahead to next summer, Jet2 has added six new destinations which are already on sale, including Agadir (Morocco), Costa de Almeria (Spain), Preveza and Halkidiki (Greece), and Pula and Split (Croatia). There are also extra flights and holidays on sale for Jersey with Jet2, offering new Saturday services until 10 October 2026.
Customer Services and Planning Director at East Midlands Airport, Mike Grimes, said: “We’re always looking to expand the list of places our customers can reach, so I’m delighted with announcements from two of our main airlines offering great new destinations and extra capacity on some of our existing popular routes. It adds even greater choice this summer and next, as well as for this winter.
“I feel sure that Boa Vista in Cape Verde will be a really popular option for people who want an effortless start to their getaway with us at East Midlands Airport. They can get in the holiday mood in our brand new restaurant Alembic, refurbished Escape Lounge or Castle Rock’s new and refurbished bars.”

Liga Portugal has been dominated by Benfica
Only two teams outside of ‘Os Três Grandes’ have won the league title: Belenenses in 1945/46 and Boavista in 2000/01
By Zach Lowy
Founded in 1903, Boavista spent its first seven decades drifting between Portugal’s top division and second tier
This changed in 1974 with the arrival of President Valentim Loureiro
who oversaw five Taça de Portugal titles and a second-place finish
Boavista continued their upward momentum by finishing second in 1999 and fourth in 2000
before shocking the world by winning the title
Boavista were no longer a parochial side gravitating around their all-conquering crosstown rivals Porto; they were the kings of Portugal
José Bosingwa and Raúl Meireles heading to Portugal’s Big Three
Boavista finished as runners-up before regressing to 10th in 2002/03 – a season which also saw Boavista come within inches of reaching the UEFA Cup Final
they still haven’t returned to European football
their form didn’t; the Panthers finished 10th and 9th in 2006/07 and 2007/08
the Portuguese authorities completed the four-year investigation of the ‘Apito Dourado,’ or Golden Whistle
which implicated Boavista and Porto in a match-fixing scandal
Porto received a six-point deduction and a €150,000 fine
whilst Boavista were relegated to the second tier and fined €180,000 for bribery and referee coercion
where they remained until winning a protracted legal battle
they never quite managed to fill their 30,000-seater stadium to the brim: many of their supporters had taken their allegiances elsewhere as soon as Boavista’s golden era came to a screeching halt
Boavista ascended two divisions and returned to the Primeira in 2015, and despite having a squad consisting of third-tier players, they avoided the drop under Petit
who was part of their title-winning squad from 2001
Petit left in November 2015 after three years in charge
with Boavista continuing to hover around the midtable positions before avoiding relegation on the final day of the 2020/21 season
Desperate for a new owner with the ambition and wherewithal to restore them to the upper echelon
Boavisteiros welcomed the arrival of Luxembourgish-Spanish businessman Gerard López in 2021
It seemed the savior they had spent two decades praying for had finally arrived – instead
López expanded his sporting empire to Royal Excel Mouscron
Mouscron suffered relegation in his first year in charge
ending a seven-year stay in Belgium’s top-flight
Mouscron were denied a professional license due to a debt of €10m
causing them to drop down two divisions and fold in 2022
Mouscron’s 100-year history had reached its conclusion
López took over Girondins de Bordeaux – who had won their sixth Ligue 1 title just 12 years prior
Bordeaux suffered relegation in López’s first season in charge
ending a 31-year spell in France’s top-tier
They hit rock bottom in 2024 after being administratively relegated to the fourth tier due to their cataclysmic finances
forcing them to relinquish their professional status and terminate the contracts of the entire first-team squad
It has been a similar story at Boavista since López’s arrival. Boavista fell into an early relegation battle, only to be rescued by the goal-scoring heroics of Petar Musa and the mid-season return of Petit as manager
who led them 12th in 2021/22 and 9th in 2022/23
it didn’t take long for the cracks to appear – on September 30
Boavista cancelled their pregame training after the medical workers failed to attend
the stadium employees refused to open the club’s facilities due to their delayed salaries
Boavista’s first-team squad refused to train after suffering three months of unpaid salaries
“When López bought Boavista, he promised to clear all of the club’s debts and inject money so that they could compete for European football within three years, but he failed to deliver,” stated Miguel L. Pereira
the author of ‘Bring Me That Horizon: A Journey to the Soul of Portuguese Football.’ “He didn’t inject any money
and whilst Petit managed to create a competitive backroom culture
and they’re on the brink of disappearing altogether.”
“In order to participate in Portugal’s professional leagues
you need to have zero social security debt and have your payments from the last three months regularized
Boavista pay all of their players and regulate the situation
and then they go three months without paying anyone
who check for paid salaries every couple of months…if that was the case in Portugal
Boavista would’ve been relegated four years ago.”
Boavista are now making headlines for all the wrong reasons: in November
López was given a 10-month suspended prison sentence and a €45,000 fine after using his platform as Lille president to hire Karim Saada
who was acting as a sports agent without a valid license
Boavista president Vítor Murta was convicted of sexually assaulting his employee between 2019 and 2022 – he was ousted in January after six years in charge
losing 1-0 to Estrela da Amadora and 3-0 to Benfica
it might be too little too late for Boavista
The Axadrezados have lost their last eight games
eight points away from the playoff spot and nine away from automatic safety
It has been 10 years since López’s first sporting acquisition – the British Formula One racing team Lotus F1 – were staring down the threat of administration
only for Renault to purchase the team and repay £2.7m in unpaid taxes
López has driven Mouscron to extinction and steered Bordeaux to the fourth division
he has led Boavista to the precipice of liquidation

FC Cincinnati have secured much-needed help at center back
announcing Thursday they've acquired Chidozie Awaziem from Portuguese top-flight side Boavista
The Nigerian international defender is under contract through 2025 with options for 2026 and 2027

Awaziem played in more than 250 professional matches after breaking through at FC Porto (Portugal)
He's also played for top-division sides Hajduk Split (Croatia)

A $1.25m filly will debut in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes at Sandown but bookmakers are lukewarm about her chances
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing
Followed categories will be added to My News
A hefty $1.25m of horseflesh will be on show for the first time in Saturday’s Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes at Sandown
Bloodstock agent Sheamus Mills paid the seven-figure amount for Boa Vista at last year’s Gold Coast Magic Millions sale
While Boa Vista was an instant hit with the top judges as a yearling
bookmakers have been lukewarm about the Snitzel filly’s chances of a debut win
posting her as a $17 chance in Chairman’s Stakes betting
Boa Vista finished last in her first summer jumpout at Cranbourne on January 6 but improved when second in her hitout at the same venue a week later
Co-trainer Michael Kent Jr said he and training partner Mick Price have not significantly tested Boa Vista in the lead-up to her debut
professional two-year-old type,” Kent Jr said
“We haven’t asked her for too much off the bridle at home so
we’re going to find out plenty on race day.”
A minor hiccup forced Price and Kent Jr to scratch Boa Vista from last Saturday’s Blue Diamond Preview
Kent Jr said missing that race could turn out to Boa Vista’s advantage in the Chairman’s Stakes
“We were in last week but we had a trace of mucus on her scope so we pulled her out,” Kent Jr said
“I thought last week’s race was particularly strong so it would have been a very tricky race but she wasn’t 100 per cent anyway.”
“She’s had an extra gallop where she worked well with an older horse on Tuesday morning
“I think this race presents as a better opportunity for her.”
which is often an advantage to guide the inexperienced youngsters in two-year-old races
Kent Jr said the draw would allow jockey Ethan Brown to give Boa Vista a soft run behind the leaders in the $200,000 contest
I think she’ll be just behind the speed and the winning post will teach us plenty about her on Saturday,” Kent Jr said
“It’s a nice race for her to kick off her career and hopefully she measures up.”
Price and Kent Jr will also run debut Pakenham winner His Finest Hour in the Mal Seccull Handicap (1800m)
His Finest Hour started his racetrack career in inauspicious circumstances but got his act together once the gates opened at Pakenham
“He dumped Beau Mertens on the way to the gates and he ran a whole lap,” Kent Jr said
“I was actually surprised they let him run but thank God they did
“What a tough horse to do that on his debut run against older horses
“Is he just a Benchmark horse or has he got potential to go on to something harder
We’ll learn a lot about him on Saturday.”
His Finest Hour is an $8 chance to remain unbeaten at Sandown

Accredited resumes at Gosford on Saturday after creating plenty of hype over the summer with some slashing performances.
Hong Kong superstar Ka Ying Rising will have two runs in Sydney this Spring, trainer David Hayes has revealed.
Thoroughbred racing’s biggest and brightest names of the jockey ranks have signed on to compete in a lucrative Grand Prix style franchise-based global circuit.
James McDonald is one of a number of champion jockeys to give the new global jockey league the tick of approval.
Melbourne jockey Ethan Brown will head to Saturday’s Hollindale Sakes at the Gold Coast in super form after a treble at last Saturday’s Caulfield meeting.
Fresh off two feature wins last weekend, Annabel Archibald will be out to secure a fifth straight Hollindale Stakes this Saturday.

Ariene dos Santos Lima adopted the Indigenous name Susui
it means “flower” — the ornament that Ariene Susui would go on to identify with in her many roles: as a journalist
a defender of Indigenous rights in social movements
and a candidate for city councilor in Boa Vista
the capital of Brazil’s northern state of Roraima
The Wapichana are the second-biggest ethnic Indigenous group in Roraima
(Macuxi is also the nickname for anyone born in the state.) In the past
members of these two ethnic groups roamed the area that today forms the border between Brazil and Guyana
Wapichana communities still live between the two jurisdictions
met a more tragic fate: they were exterminated by the first European colonists
only nine of the 30 peoples still exist,” says Ananda Machado
an anthropologist at the Federal University of Roraima (UFRR)
the Paraviana survive only as the name of an upscale neighborhood in Boa Vista
The initial colonization of Roraima began in the 1700s with the construction of Fort São Joaquim at the confluence of the Uraricoera and Takutu rivers
But it was only in the 1930s that the area saw large population growth
following the discovery of gold and diamonds
A monument in honor of the original prospectors stands in the center of Boa Vista
about 30 kilometers (19 miles) downriver from the fort
Roraima remains the most sparsely populated state in Brazil
This intense process of urbanization has pushed the Wapichana and Macuxi peoples farther away from the banks of the Rio Branco
and away from much of their original territory
“My great-grandparents said that the streams within the municipality were used to bathe
wash utensils and have children [give birth],” says Eliandro Pedro de Souza Wapichana
also an anthropologist at UFRR and founder of the Organization of Indigenous People of the City (Odic)
The colonization of the area that would become Boa Vista saw settlers establishing farms on lands previously occupied by natives
Many such estates were the result of land grabs
and register their claims with local authorities
“To ensure that their space would not be invaded
They imposed their presence in spaces close to the city
That is why in the process of demarcation some Indigenous reserves are considered ‘islands,'” Eliandro Wapichana says
The Indigenous communities that still remain in the capital are concentrated in the rural area of the municipality
It’s home to 600 families distributed across five areas: Serra do Truaru
Ariene Susui was born in Truaru da Cabeceira
The entrance to the dirt road that leads to her home is close to one of the most popular tourist spots in Roraima
a private lake frequented by Boa Vista’s elite
Downtown Boa Vista is a 30-minute drive away
But there’s a much larger distance that separates Ariene Susui from the heart of the city
She ate only what the community fished and farmed
and she knew everyone who lived around her
She didn’t even consider a career after high school; her parents only had a primary school education
Then a teacher at the Indigenous school where she studied told her about the PSEI
the entrance exam for UFRR that allocates seats specifically for Indigenous students
It takes place months before the regular entrance exam
“It was a dream that was born,” Ariene Susui says
Joining university opened up many other doors for her: she got to know Indigenous social movements; participated in mobilizations
and meetings with other communities in the state; and became an activist recognized as an advocate for education
Ariene Susui enrolled in UFRR’s undergraduate journalism program
she lived and worked as a maid in the home of an upper-middle-class family in the São Francisco neighborhood
one of the most central and wealthiest in Boa Vista
“My mother lived like this here and I thought this was the only way to live in the capital.”
Nearly 6,000 Indigenous people live in Boa Vista
the fifth-biggest population among Brazilian cities
Indigenous students on the PSEI program who come from the Roraima hinterland can apply for a fellowship called Bolsa Permanência and for a room at the Indigenous student dormitory called Casa do Estudante Indígena
UFRR’s Insikiran Institute for Higher Education for Indigenous People (Instituto Insikiran de Formação Superior Indígena) offers three undergraduate courses for Indigenous people only: intercultural education
and management in Indigenous collective health
Students pursuing other streams can take the PSEI or the regular entrance exam
The university’s postgraduate program has a quota of 30 places for minority students
For the master’s degree in geography
there is one spot allocated for an Indigenous student
we are managing to have Indigenous doctors in Roraima,” says Ananda
who is also a professor and researcher at the Insikiran Institute
“I consider our block to be an Indigenous territory within the university
where [the students] can speak in their [own] languages.”
only her grandparents are fluent in Wapichana
“My parents grew up afraid to speak” because of land disputes between traditional peoples and farmers
“And that is why my generation is not fluent.” This is a situation that’s very common in several families
and one of the peculiarities of the Amazon
She says UFRR has made great efforts to produce translated learning material to cater to students with different native languages
“If young people see this need to continue to speak their language
they can put their children at school or learn from their grandparents
Monolingualism is not healthy,” Ananda says
Access to Indigenous-specific public policies like this in cities and communities is one of the achievements of the Indigenous movement
He attributes this to the mobilization of Indigenous people living in urban areas of Boa Vista
Their achievements include differentiated school education
a dedicated health board for Indigenous communities in the city’s east
and a DSEI just for the Yanomami people in the city
Nursery schools have also opened within the communities
but there’s been some pushback from the families
who don’t necessarily see the value in teaching traditional languages and religions
Emerson da Silva Rodrigues earned a master’s degree in social anthropology from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE)
He says that even today there are communities that have no schools
“Access to infrastructure within the Indigenous reserves is very recent
still lacking basic services depending on the location of the reserve.”
there’s no dedicated health care system for Indigenous people
he is no longer an Indigenous,’” Eliandro Wapichana says
Boa Vista’s City Hall didn’t reply to requests for comment
The health care system is also under strain from the influx of Indigenous people crossing the border into Roraima from Venezuela to escape the economic crisis there
They join the 55,000 Indigenous people who already reside in Roraima and comprise eight ethnic groups (see infographic below)
intensifying the problems that already exist in health care
Most of them live in shelters run by the Humanitarian Task Force
a partnership between the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
and NGOs such as the Fraternity—International Humanitarian Federation (FFHI)
There are two shelters for Indigenous people: one in the Pintolândia neighborhood
and another in the municipality of Pacaraima
Many Indigenous people from Venezuela previously lived on the streets in Roraima
the Insikiran Institute has become something of a safe space for Indigenous students
and there’s still a mindset among some faculty that Indigenous students don’t have the same capacity to learn
fueled by the historical disputes over land ownership
that Indigenous people are a hindrance to the development of Roraima
a hotel and rice farms had to be abandoned when the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Reserve was established in 2005 and the land returned to its original owners
There’s great animosity toward the Indigenous people who come from the deep within the Roraima hinterland
She describes it as a mentality passed down from the original colonizers
“When the colonizers considered that everything their cattle stepped on was their territory
even if it was the Indigenous people’s field
[the Indigenous people] were pushed farther and farther away,” she says
The disregard for the Indigenous presence also manifests in other ways in Roraima
She points to the Yanomami Indigenous Reserve — the largest in Brazil
which also straddles the state of Amazonas — and the invasion there of illegal gold miners
There are now as many of the invaders there as of the native population
She says there’s intense discrimination by people from outside the state against the original inhabitants
Indigenous inhabitants of Boa Vista “have to deal with the contempt of those who consider them lazy and dirty: they are not served in restaurants
they are followed in markets,” Ananda says
“Not to mention that many can only afford to live in neighborhoods without basic sanitation.”
This prejudice often compels Indigenous people to drop out of university
especially women who work in family homes or restaurants
she now lives with her younger sisters in Jardim Floresta
a neighborhood that links the city center to the periphery
When she was a communications analyst for the Indigenous Council of Roraima
Ariene Susui got even closer human rights movements and their leaders
She says the internet is a powerful tool: both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees dissertations dealt with the use of digital media by Indigenous people
She also talks about women’s empowerment and education at national and regional events — now virtual
The first member of her family to graduate from university
Ariene Susui says she’s thrilled to see Indigenous doctors
“The other people still have that vision of 1,500 of us as the savages in the middle of the woods,” she says
“So it is very important to live here in the urban context
to assert yourself as an Indigenous person
The conquest of one is the conquest of all of us.”

This study describes the first potential multi-species shark nursery area in Atlantic Africa (Sal Rei Bay – SRB
6162 neonates and juveniles of 5 different shark species were observed in SRB using beach gillnet-based bycatch surveys
namely milk (Rhizoprionodon acutus; n= 4908)
scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini; n= 1035)
Atlantic weasel (Paragaleus pectoralis; n= 93) and nurse (Ginglymostoma cirratum; n= 12) sharks
significant seasonal variations in shark relative abundance were observed
with higher levels being recorded during summer and autumn
together with local knowledge (interviews to fishermen)
denote the consistent use of SRB by juvenile sharks and its preference relative to other areas in the region
Ensuring the protection and conservation of SRB nursery area is especially relevant as
all identified shark species are threatened with extinction over the near-future – in particular
scalloped hammerheads (critically endangered) and Atlantic weasel sharks (endangered)
The effective protection of SRB will not only support the conservation of shark populations
loggerhead turtles) and broader benthic and pelagic ecosystems
three criteria must be met so that a particular marine area can be considered as a shark nursery ground
namely: i) preference – sharks are found more often in the specific area than in neighboring ones
ii) residency – sharks tend to remain in the area (or return) for extended periods
and iii) consistency – the area or habitat is used repeatedly by sharks over the years
Communal nurseries are locations where juveniles of multiple shark species occur and the adults are mostly absent (Simpfendorfer and Milward, 1993). Yet, in such nurseries, the juveniles face a tradeoff between lower predation risk and increased competition – while the latter is potentially reduced via partitioning of food resources (Kinney et al., 2011)
a potential multi-species/communal shark nursery area in the Atlantic African region
we describe the first potential nursery of milk (Rhizoprionodon acutus)
and nurse (Ginglymostoma cirratum) sharks in Sal Rei Bay (SRB)
Here we assess: (i) the diversity of shark species occurring in the SRB; (ii) the size frequency distribution of juvenile sharks; (iii) inter and intra-year patterns in the relative abundance of juvenile sharks (catch per unit of effort data); and (iv) the spatial variation in species composition and abundance around Boa Vista Island based on interviews to local fishermen
artisanal fishermen) to bear a variety of shark juveniles
beach gillnet-based bycatch was surveyed (4 cm square-mesh monofilament gill net
with 30 meters in length and 3 m deep) on a monthly basis
This type of artisanal fishing gear is used by the local fishermen to catch small pelagic fish (sparids
The gill net was always set perpendicular to the shore
depending on tidal and weather (season) conditions
Juvenile sharks were identified to the species-level
the animals were manually moved through the water during release to promote recuperation
Catch per unit effort (CPUE) was calculated as the number of sharks caught per hour per net meter square (sharks h-1 m-2)
To understand if sharks are found more often in SBR than in other areas of the island
a short questionnaire was conducted close to local artisanal and semi-industrial fishermen
From a list of 92 licensed fishermen in Boa Vista Island
They were conducted in Cabo Verdean creole
fishermen were informed about the purpose of the survey
and confidential treatment of the obtained data
and asked for verbal consent to participating
The interview entailed the following 4 questions:
i) “Are you aware of any specific areas in Boa Vista Island where one can find higher abundance of shark juveniles?”
which one shows the highest values of abundance of shark juveniles”
iii) “Which species do you find in that particular area”
iv) “Where do you usually fish”
Total length (TL) of juvenile sharks was measured to the nearest 0.5 cm. TL frequency distributions of milk (n= 2165), scalloped hammerheads (n= 404), blacktip (n=115), Atlantic weasel (n=94) and nurse sharks (n=12) were evaluated and compared with key biological information obtained from previous studies, namely species’ length at first maturity and size at birth in the Atlantic Ocean (see respective data and references in Supplementary Table 2)
To evaluate changes over time generalized additive models (GAMs) per species were used, with a smooth of time (year) and a cyclic smooth of month. We considered the relative abundance (catch per unit of effort) response to be Gaussian, with a log link. To ensure that the cyclic nature of the variable month was respected we considered a cyclic basis for the month spline. Models were implemented in the R library mgcv, following Wood (2017)
The residuals of the fitted models were checked for temporal autocorrelation
and since no serious reasons for concern were found
we did not include an autocorrelation term in the models
Figure 1 Temporal changes in the relative abundance (catch per unit of effort; number of individuals h-1 m-2) of juvenile milk (Rhizoprionodon acutus)
and blacktip (Carcharhinus limbatus) sharks in Sal Rei Bay
Figure 2 Temporal changes in the relative abundance (catch per unit of effort; number of individuals h-1 m-2) of juvenile Atlantic weasel (Paragaleus pectoralis) and nurse (Ginglymostoma cirratum) juvenile sharks in Sal Rei Bay

Figure 3 Length distributions of juvenile milk (Rhizoprionodon acutus), scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini), blacktip (Carcharhinus limbatus), Atlantic weasel (Paragaleus pectoralis) and nurse (Ginglymostoma cirratum) sharks in Sal Rei Bay, Boa Vista Island, Cabo Verde. Vertical dashed lines represent species’ length at first maturity for both males and females (see respective references in Supplementary Table 2)
Figure 4 (A) Areas of occurrence of juvenile sharks in Boa Vista Island
Eleven areas were identified based on dedicated interviews (n=55) to local registered commercial and artisanal fishermen; six of these areas were considered as the areas with the highest number of juvenile sharks in Boa Vista Island
(B) Spatial distribution of the identified areas around the island of Boa Vista
Sal Rei Bay (SRB) collected the highest level of agreement among fishermen
both as an area with juvenile sharks (n=43; 78%) and as the area with the highest number of juvenile sharks (n=33; 60%)
Respondents identified (C) areas of occurrence of juvenile blacktip sharks (n=9; 16%)
(D) juvenile hammerhead sharks (n=11; 20%)
and (E) juvenile “cação” (n=33; 60%)
“Cação” is the common name used locally to refer to both milk and Atlantic weasel sharks – only two fishermen referred to Atlantic weasel sharks specifically
and one to “boca cumprido” referring to milk sharks
Identified offshore fishing grounds include “Leste”
and “West” (these are large areas off the coast
locally known as “pesqueiros”)

we argue that the importance of the SRB as a potential nursery area for multiple threatened shark species must not be understated
Further action is therefore needed to ensure the effective conservation of shark populations
and broader benthic and pelagic ecosystems
Such protection will largely depend on the specific conservation measures and monitoring plans that are put in place
but also on capacity building and awareness raising actions targeting national and international ocean users and stakeholders
Only then will it be possible to ensure an equitable and sustainable use and conservation of the SRB
The raw data supporting the conclusions of this article will be made available by the authors
Ethical review and approval was not required for the animal study because It entailed surveys on local artisanal bycatch fishery

Choose which otherworldly and spectacular Cabo Verde island is right for you © Susana_Martins / Shutterstock
Marc is just back from Cabo Verde where he researched and wrote the upcoming Pocket Cabo Verde (out October 2024)
Here he breaks down which island is best for your favorite type of vacation
A sprinkling of volcanic islands almost 600km (373 miles) off the coast of Senegal, Cabo Verde is an archipelago that has it all: sweeping beaches of golden sand; active
climbable volcanoes; West Africa’s best hiking and a lively local music and arts scene
This diversity means every island has its own unique charms
and traveling between them can be an unpredictable affair
We've got everything you need to know to choose the perfect Cabo Verde island for your vacation
By far the most touristed island, Sal is also the Cabo Verde destination with the most services
The epicentre of the tourist action is the town of Santa Maria
with a world-class beach and more restaurants than most of the country’s islands put together
When you’ve had enough of caipirinhas and sun lotion on the sands
take a day excursion with one of a multitude of local guides to some intriguing spots
Let baby lemon sharks nibble your toes in the shallows off the east coast
float Dead Sea-style at the salt pans of Pedra de Lume and spot turtles on the west coast – all easily manageable in a day
Planning tip: There’s no need to book tours and excursions in advance
You can wait until you are on the ground to find the right guide for you
Santiago is by far the most populated island in the archipelago and certainly has the liveliest feel
This is helped along by the fact that the Cabo Verdean capital
A short ride to the west of Praia lies Cabo Verde’s only UNESCO-listed site
once a major Portuguese colonial city that played a large part in the West African trade of enslaved people
Today you can clamber around the ruins of cathedrals and monasteries or have a bite to eat in Cabo Verde’s oldest street
but Santiago has a network of marked trails that runs the entire length of the island as well as lots of associated infrastructure
Those trails reach a crescendo at Tarrafal
Santiago’s best beach resort with a truly Caribbean feel
Planning tip: Many make the mistake of staying in Praia and taking trips north
Base yourself in the northern beach resort of Tarrafal for a much more pleasant experience
Though divided from Sal to the north by a mere 40km (25 miles) of ocean, Boa Vista couldn’t be more different
this is the island in the archipelago for those looking to escape
wander golden sands and dream of pirates and shipwrecks
Sal Rei is the capital –a place with a lively expat scene and innovative new restaurants, such as Bowlavista
With their cool bars and shimmering white sand
the town’s beaches would be enough for most islands
such as endless Santa Monica and the dunes of Varandinha
Boa Vista has its own stretch of desert (the Viana)
where the sand is piled up to 50m (164ft) high –a magical place to watch the stars at night and sandboard by day
Planning tip: Boa Vista is best seen from the back of a 4X4 pickup
and the good news is there are plenty of local operators in Sal Rei willing to take you out to ride those dunes
Santo Antão is Cabo Verde’s Jekyll and Hyde island with two very different sides to it
Promotional bumf shows hikers passing through lush vegetation
but around two-thirds of the island is dry and barren
The third you’ll be interested in is the north
where you’ll find the Paúl Valley –arguably Cabo Verde’s top hike
with several routes passing through terraced farmland
rum-like concoction made in small distilleries along the valley from the sugar cane that thrives there
the O Curral restaurant is a superb place to replenish calories
Planning tip: The only reliable ferry service in the entire archipelago operates between Mindelo on São Vicente and Porto Novo on Santo Antão
This makes these the only two islands you can safely plan to visit in one trip
Planning tip: Mindelo is a place where it pays to go with the flow. There’s always something going on in town, from concerts to art shows, parties to street theater, so once you’ve unpacked, head out into the vibrant streets and let yourself be surprised.
Out in the far west of the archipelago, Fogo and Brava are an Atlantic double act with an off-the-map feel. The biggest draw here is the crater of the active volcano that gave birth to the island millions of years ago. Incredibly there are villages below the summit, which often get in the way of determined lava flows (last time in 2014).
The reason locals insist on living there is immediately clear – wine! Grapes love the volcanic soil in the caldera, and the local wine is special indeed. After sipping the local Chã das Caldeiras white, take a hike up the peak before boarding or sledging back down on the volcanic ash. That same volcanic soil also provides nutrients for coffee bushes, with plantations spread across the east of the island. Connoisseurs long since declared Fogo coffee one of the best beans in the world.
Brava is the most remote of Cabo Verde’s ten islands and feels like a true escape from 21st-century tourism. The beach village of Fajã de Agua on the west coast is a particularly dreamy place.
Planning tip: The timing of ferry services and absence of flights means you can’t make a day trip from Fogo to Brava, so you’ll need to book at least one night in a guesthouse on the tiny island.
