Architect João Almeida, of Gabinet Risco, enlivened the main section of the hotel with “waves of lace”—moveable shutters designed to protect the rooms from the bright sun. The simple composition and linear volume of the two-story structure helps highlight the views from the city to the river.
Glass walls and contemporary furnishings soften the overall tone, while monochromes feature throughout. Communal spaces see vibrant wall panels depicting scenes from the Orient.

European Golf Design has been hired to renovate the Guardian Bom Sucesso course in Óbidos, Lisbon.
The project will focus on enhancing sustainability and environmental elements of the course, which was originally designed by Donald Steel.
“Bom Sucesso is delighted to go forward with the course renovation,” said Pedro Portugal, CEO of Bom Sucesso. “It’s a great challenge and we believe European Golf Design is the right partner. Since we became a European Tour Destination this has been on our agenda, and we are fully focused on exceeding our golfers’ expectations.”
Some elements of the work on the course are already underway, with Jeremy Slessor, managing director of European Golf Design, commenting: “We’re looking forward to working with Bom Sucesso to improve many aspects of this already hugely impressive golf resort.”
He added: “Our initial objective is to improve the landscaping around the course and in that way to increase the environmental value of the land. While at the same time reintroducing the beautiful natural characteristics, removing areas of grass that are far out of play, reducing the cost of maintenance and the consumption of water without compromising on the overall playability of the course.”
Text description provided by the architects. This project involves the building of a block of 18 premises for habitation purposes next to the Óbidos Lake in the future site of the Golf and Country Club – Quinta do Bom Sucesso.
These will be located in one of the far sides of the Quinta with a valley to the east, one of the access roads to the west, a thicket to the south and a group of dwellings to the north. Our proposal is to build on this site, the central theme being that each premise should have an interactive relationship with the surrounding area, under the following conditions:
© Leonardo Finotti1. A privileged view of the valley, with the premises overlooking the valley, yet imposing within the landscape.
2. Take into account the position of the premises in relation to the access road so as to guarantee privacy and give them a measure of “invisibility”.
© Leonardo Finotti3. Set the northern and southern boundaries of the block in such a way that its location in relation to the access road on the south and the dwellings to the north is borne in mind.
Design the interior of the premises in such a way that it allows outside extensions
Outer walls to be built to ensure there is both an intimate relationship with the surrounding area and a high degree of privacy

Historian and author Bronagh McShane with Sister Bonaventure and Sister Colette of the Poor Clares Galway at the launch of McShane's book
Migration and Reintegration," in 2022 (Courtesy of the Poor Clares Galway)
View Author Profile
Bronagh McShane is a historian and a fellow with the Royal Historical Society specializing in the history of women, religion and gender. Her new book, Irish Women in Religious Orders, 1530-1700: Suppression, Migration and Reintegration
is the first comprehensive study of the lives and experiences of Irish nuns in the two centuries after the Reformation
The book analyzes Irish nuns' experiences in Ireland and in Europe in that time period and explores the familial and patronage networks that facilitated Irish nuns' formation in exile and return to their homeland
McShane completed her doctorate at the National University of Ireland Maynooth. She conducted research for the book in archives across Ireland, the United Kingdom and Europe, funded by the National University of Ireland through a research fellowship in humanities. She currently lectures in the Department of History at the University of Limerick.
The cover of "Irish Women in Religious Orders
Migration and Reintegration," published in October 2022
McShane: My lasting impression is of the resilience and perseverance of the individual women whose stories I tell in the book.
They were constantly up against very challenging circumstances. Ireland during the late 16th and into the 17th centuries was going through a very turbulent phase. There were rebellions, uprisings, outright war and the Cromwellian conquest
these women were upholding their way of life and doing everything they could to continue it.
Some of them began their formation by joining English convents in Europe
But they wanted to move back to Ireland to be able to propagate the message of Counter-Reformation Catholicism despite the extraordinarily challenging circumstances
Their movement to and from Ireland and Europe is a fascinating part of this history
but movement outside and beyond the convent is essential to being able to observe a monastic way of life
Bronagh McShane sits in the cloister garden of the Convento de Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso
The context of conflict and the subjugation of Ireland and the Catholic faith in the 16th and 17th centuries seems to have militated against the survival and founding of convents
The head of state in the late 16th century was Queen Elizabeth I
and then James I came to the throne in the early part of the 17th century
The established church in Ireland was the Protestant Church
so Catholicism was operating as an illegal institution
It was a unique context because although Ireland was officially Protestant
the vast majority of the population retained allegiance to Catholicism
and so the state ran into a lot of difficulty in trying to suppress Catholicism.
Religious orders were a thorn in the side of the state and official government in Dublin
They played a major role in terms of encouraging observance of the Roman Catholic faith by the lay population
and they maintained a connection between Ireland and Catholic Europe through their international connections.
The onset of the Cromwellian conquest was devastating in Ireland, and members of the church were persecuted. There was a mass exodus from Ireland. Catholic powers like Spain came to the aid of the Irish through connections that had been built via Irish religious like Daniel O'Daly and Francis Nugent of the Irish Capuchins.
The woman who is featured on the front cover of my book is Honoria Megaen. It is from a fresco in Sicily. Honoria was a Dominican tertiary affiliated with the Dominican priory of Burrishoole in County Mayo
The priory was attacked by Cromwellian forces
Two of the sisters — Honoria Megaen and Honoria Burke
another Dominican tertiary — were pursued by soldiers; they were caught
stripped and so badly beaten that they both subsequently died of their injuries
A report about this harrowing incident was sent by eyewitnesses to Dominican friars
and details were circulated at the 1656 Dominican general chapter in Rome.
What is fascinating is that the story of Honoria Megaen's life in a very isolated part of the west coast of Ireland made its way into fresco depicting the pantheon of notable Dominican martyrs in a monastery in Taormina
This fresco held her up as a martyr for the Catholic Church.
Bronagh McShane sits in the nuns' choir at the Convento de Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso
One of the primary charisms of many Irish apostolic congregations founded in the 19th century was education
What did you discover about the role of women's orders in education in 16th- and 17th-century Ireland?
but none of them was engaged in education at this stage
It was not part of their vocation and their mission
who returned from the Continent in the 1680s and established a school alongside their convent in Dublin.
While there were a few instances of Benedictines before the Henrician dissolution of the monasteries [1536-1541]
the Augustinians were the predominant order for women religious in Ireland at the time
This is interesting because the Augustinians don't really lead the way in terms of the revival of female religious life in Ireland in the post-Reformation period.
the Poor Clares are the first order of women that establish themselves in the aftermath of the Henrician suppression of monasteries and convents
They remained the predominant order in Ireland in the 17th century
An Augustinian foundation of nuns was established in Galway in 1646
The onset of the Cromwellian campaign saw the dispersal of the community along with the Poor Clares and Dominicans
the Augustinians did not reappear in Ireland to the same extent that the Poor Clares and Dominicans did

Research for a book like yours involves a lot of analysis and trawling through archives
Was there any nugget that really captured your imagination?
The famous female Benedictine of this period was Kilkenny-born Mary Butler, who was abbess of Ypres. She was schooled and trained in the English Benedictine convent in Ghent
She subsequently took on the role of abbess of the Irish Benedictine convent in Ypres
she undertook a mission at the request of King James II to return to Ireland and establish a Benedictine convent of women religious in Dublin.
Portrait of Abbess Mary Butler (Courtesy of the Benedictine Monastery Archive
It is held in Kylemore Abbey and is signed on the back by her
This document granted her permission to leave her convent and travel to Ireland.
The Benedictines established themselves in Dublin, but unfortunately, it was a very short-lived foundation because of the onset of the Williamite Wars during which the convent was trashed and the nuns had to escape
and Mary Butler never returned to Ireland but remained in Ypres and died there

How significant was social standing in enabling Irish women to pursue their vocation in this era?
Elite families could afford to send their daughters to the Continent for schooling and cover the expense of travel and the cost of education itself
A lot of the women would have boarded at schools attached to the convents
and they might also have sustained them thereafter in other ways
The closure of the monasteries in the 16th century really did wipe away options for women
Religious life for women provided an opportunity to receive a level of education that they might not otherwise attain and to exercise a level of authority and leadership within a female community that they wouldn't otherwise have had.
The Poor Clares of Galway are the oldest surviving convent in Ireland and maintain a small but important collection of rare books from the 17th and 18th centuries
including this chronicle kept by Mary Bonaventura Browne
(Courtesy of the Poor Clare Monastery Archive
In the book, I talk about two sisters, Bridget and Mary Nugent, daughters of Richard Nugent, the earl of Westmeath. They were sent to France to be educated by the Sepulchrine Canonesses [Canonesses Regular of the Holy Sepulchre] in Charleville
The nuns were to provide them with a level of education befitting their rank as elite women
We don't have any evidence that either of them became a nun.
He was tasked by the earl with assisting his daughters to travel to Charleville
the first Irish foundation in Europe in this period for women religious
He traveled to Ireland to seek members for this new foundation.
Other important male figures are Jesuits Henry Fitzsimon and Robert Rochfort. Rochfort assisted Irish women who wanted to join the English Poor Clare convent in Gravelines in modern-day northern France. I was able to locate a grant from the Archduchess Isabella [Clare Eugenia
daughter of Philip II of Spain] to the Poor Clares.
It is fascinating to see how these nuns are communicating with and in correspondence with the highest levels of power and authority in the regions within which they are operating
Far from being shut away behind closed doors
these women were operating in important power networks and were very much at the heart of European diplomacy

The Algarve is the most famous destination in the country
but four top golf resorts on the Silver Coast in Portugal have sought to change that perception and establish their region as one of the greatest for golf in continental Europe
Portugal’s Silver Coast - an area around 240km long that stretches between Lisbon and Porto - enjoys moderate temperatures all year round
Since Praia D’El Rey earned a reputation as one of Portugal’s best golf resorts in the late 1990s
the southern tip of the region has long been an area frequented by golfers as part of a wider trip to Lisbon
But with the region now being home to three of Portugal’s top 20 golf courses
the opportunity to establish the area as ‘Portugal’s Silver Golf Coast’ has seen the venues partner together to encourage visitors to stay longer
Located close to the historic towns of Peniche and Obidos
the venues - owned by three different owners with Praia D’El Rey Golf & Beach Resort and West Cliffs Golf Links owned by the same group - have begun selling wider golf packages involving golf at all four courses
Visitors can select which courses they wish to play during their stay at the two five-star hotels
villa or apartment accommodation spread across the four resorts
while transfers are organised free of charge between the resorts
newly promoted director of golf at Praia D’El Rey and West Cliffs Golf Links
said: "To have four golf resorts of such high quality in as close of a proximity as we have here on the Silver Coast is certainly something worth shouting about
"We know that the best way to ensure more golfers discover this fantastic area is to come together collectively
and we are super excited at what this partnership can not only do for each for us
While on-course investment is planned for all four courses to further elevate the visitor and member experience
off-course investment has seen the courses also partner together with renowned marketing and public relations industry specialists Azalea to help market and support the destination
Azalea has established itself as one of Europe’s premier agencies in the golf
representing best-in-class global venues and brands such as Costa Navarino
said: "Having worked with Praia D’El Rey and West Cliffs for several years
it is fantastic to now also be working alongside Royal Obidos and Bom Sucesso to help all four resorts establish and market the wider destination."
Golfshake's Travel Editor Andy Waple has recently been there himself and played all four courses, and you can read his review in his feature article The Best Golf Courses on The Silver Coast in Portugal

There seems to be no stopping the growing popularity of the Praia D’El Rey Resort situated north of Lisbon in Portugal
Bookings have been flooding in this year with its two courses welcoming an upsurge in interest as golfers put the pandemic behind them, as reported in Golfshake in March
There is no doubt that the opening of the resort’s second course, West Cliffs, in 2017, has added to the appeal. With Royal Obidos Spa & Golf Resort and Bom Sucesso Resort courses on the doorstep
has well and truly become a golf destination in its own right
We have visited Praia D’El Rey on a number of occasions and now
as West Cliffs celebrates its fifth anniversary
Praia D’El Rey is about an hour’s drive from Lisbon’s Herberto Delgardo airport following the toll road north
It was established in the late 1990s with a combination of apartments, villas and townhouses, with the Praia D’El Rey Marriott Golf & Beach Resort completing the accommodation options
This five star hotel has a choice of five restaurants all serving fresh and authentic produce and has a comprehensive range of therapies and treatments on offer at the Kalyan Spa
The championship course was added in 1997
and the resort manages the nearby West Cliff course which opened five years ago
Its setting on the Atlantic coastline is stunning - with huge rollers attracting the international surfing set to nearby Peniche and Nazare
Obidos
a fascinating town with well-preserved medieval architecture
provides added interest for those wishing to explore
while Portugal’s renowned sea-based cuisine and superb local wines add to the appeal
A downside to the resort is a shortage of nearby restaurants and bars within walking distance of the hotel and clubhouse
so unless you are willing to drive or take a taxi to nearby towns your choices are limited
Yet those looking for golf and more golf are well served by the Marriott
An added bonus is its regular five-minute shuttle bus service to the Praia D’El Rey clubhouse
Five years on and West Cliffs continues to receive many plaudits for its design
beautiful surroundings and is without doubt one of the finest courses in Portugal
and due to some long carries from tee to fairway in places
it pays to take the starter’s advice when selecting tee boxes
There is also an abundance of vegetation to contend with and while fairway width is often generous
a lost ball is often the result of a wayward shot
The course is fairly hilly and energy sapping
particularly due to some long walks from green to tee
though cut to a pace to make them playable
West Cliffs is hugely enjoyable and few will regret playing there
The opener is a tricky par four; while not particularly long at 334 yards from the “55” tee boxes
it needs a good drive down the left followed by a deft iron to a long undulating green
The 2nd is a downhill par three to a roller-coaster green with a large sandy waste area to the right
You will need to have got right into your game by this point because the 3rd hole is menacing to say the least
with water running the length of the right hand side
to the edge of a tiny green hidden away among dunes
The 4th is the first of those forewarned long carries off the tee
yet if you have listened to the starter you should not be in trouble
Next comes the famous redan green on the par three 5th
Sloping severely from front to back it’s a real test of your green reading
The two par fives that follow are arguably the best on the course
From a good vantage point on the previous tee
take note of the fairway and its hidden waste land that runs across it
Native vegetation here is really a thing of beauty yet some of the finest views belong to the back nine which starts with a glorious short par four with the ocean in the background
Standing on this tee just beyond the putting green to the rear of the clubhouse is a joy to behold
Highlight holes on the return include the downhill 14th
the difficult par five 15th and the final pair - the 17th with its 90 degree right dogleg and the highly memorable 18th which runs down a steep slope towards the green guarded by a large lake
A Cabell Robinson course opened in 1997 and quickly won the hearts of golfers
It offers a mix of tree-lined parkland style golf and a handful of links-like holes overlooking the wild Atlantic in a truly stunning setting
The original order of play featured the coastal holes on the front nine
but this was reversed so the most memorable holes play towards the end of the round
It is a favourite course of many who play it
not many people go away with a bad impressions
A lively clubhouse with great terrace and extensive practice facilities complete the picture
The first provides a nice warm up starting tee shot
but you immediately get to see that the greens are large and undulating and bunkers are aplenty
The course heads off toward the coast for the next two holes before returning inland to a short yet testing par four 4th and a long 5th and 7th
The par three 8th over a lake is very interesting before the opening loop finishes with a tricky tee shot required with a fairway sloping severely from left to right bringing out of bounds into play
The back nine begins from an elevated tee on a par five
with a large pond attracting balls hit to the right of the green before the much photographed coast holes begin to feature
The weakest hole of the course is here - an uphill par three which appears to have been wedged into a corner to the accommodate the Marriott hotel behind it
The 16th presents the start of a trio of strong finishing holes - I’d say the par five 17th is one of the hardest the course and fully deserves its Strokesaver comment: “A par here will feel like a birdie.”
Praia D’El Rey and the associated West Cliffs courses are the centre piece of a great golfing experience on the Silver Coast and make a worthy alternative to Algarve golf

Brighton & Hove Albion recently secured the signature of Brazilian defender Igor from Fiorentina for a reported fee of €17 million plus €3 million in add-ons
Following the Seagulls’ unsuccessful pursuit of Levi Colwill on a permanent deal from Chelsea
they found an alternative left-footed centre-back in the form of the Bom Sucesso-born defender
Igor is still in his early prime years and should slot in nicely to a Brighton side entering the UEFA Europa League this season and attempting to build on a successful 2022/23 campaign
The Brazilian is yet to make a first-team appearance for his nation
but a move to a well-run club like Brighton should help in that pursuit
The seaside club has a fantastic track record in the transfer market and will be hoping that Igor proves to be yet another shrewd piece of business
Igor is accustomed to possession-based football and should therefore adjust well to Brighton’s style of play under Roberto De Zerbi
Fiorentina enjoyed the 2nd-highest average possession statistics in the league
They also had the 2nd-most touches in the penalty area
as well as having the 3rd-most touches in the attacking third behind Napoli and Atalanta
Fiorentina’s game was predicated on retaining possession in advanced areas and regularly enjoying territory in the opposition’s half
This approach allowed Igor to show his passing prowess for La Viola
Igor is a fairly high-volume passer and possesses impressive accuracy from all distances
He tends to be more adventurous in his passing as opposed to simply recycling possession with simple short passes
This makes him an important progressive tool for a possession-based side as he has the willingness and ability to execute more advanced passes
He also ranked in the 55th percentile for progressive passes amongst centre-backs in Europe’s big 5 leagues
so there is evidently another level for him to reach
This comfort with the ball will be crucial to his development under De Zerbi as the club aim to sustain success over a longer period
Perhaps even more impressive than his passing is Igor’s press resistance
He has a high level of technical security and he uses this to evade pressure before progressing the ball
He’s very composed under pressure and a strong ball carrier
allowing him to gain yards after breaking the first line of pressure
The talented Brazilian is remarkably smooth in his carries
almost resembling a deep-lying playmaker orchestrating the midfield
His fantastic feet allow him to glide past opponents into advantageous zones
This will be another important trait for Igor’s adaptation to Brighton’s system as they tend to invite the opposition to press them in order to create artificial transitions
therefore defenders must be press-resistant and technically secure in their actions
therefore his defensive acumen will always matter most to coaches and fans alike
seeking to be active in advanced areas and aggressively press opposition forwards and midfielders
Igor’s defensive statistics are particularly impressive considering how much possession Fiorentina enjoyed on a regular basis last season
He’s always prepared to step forward and defend aggressively
similarly to Lisandro Martínez for Manchester United
Due to Fiorentina’s high line and propensity to pin opposition teams back
Igor had plenty of opportunities to make tackles high up the pitch and he did so often and efficiently
This will translate well to Brighton’s style of play as they enjoy similar territorial dominance in the Premier League
He’s a reliable 1v1 defender in transition — a situation he had to face a fair amount with La Viola and his strong physique gives him a notable advantage in duels
that his aggressive defensive style can lead to disciplinary problems on the pitch as he picked up 10 yellow cards and 1 red card for Fiorentina in Serie A last season
De Zerbi will need to temper this part of his game without sacrificing the qualities that make him such a good defender
Igor may need some time to adjust to a new league and system
Being in his prime years should help in that regard and Brighton fans will certainly be hoping the Brazilian allows them to forget about Levi Colwill fairly quickly
and they now have a player who can immediately slot into their strongest XI and continue to grow with the team

Reaching over 400,000 people a week with news about Portugal
brand-new developments in up-and-coming resorts are luring British buyers away from their traditional property haunts
the name of the town of Peniche sent shivers down Portuguese spines
The place was home to one of the most notorious jails for political prisoners during the Salazar regime
this fishing town in the Costa de Prata has ditched its grim heritage to become the shopping centre of choice for the many people who are snapping up properties along the Costa
Although the Portuguese property market has been affected by the economic slowdown that gripped the country in 2004
the Algarve continues to be popular with overseas buyers
the Costa de Prata is showing every sign of stealing its crown
Peniche itself is better known for its seafood than its landscapes
but the beaches immediately to the north are some of the finest in this relatively unspoilt corner of Portugal
has brought the Costa within easy reach of Lisbon and its airport
where low-cost airlines are starting to schedule daily flights
This makes it prime holiday country for both locals and foreigners
?The Costa de Prata is currently the object of much attention by foreign second-home buyers,
who calls the area ?one of the last undiscovered gems in Europe?
Among the most established resorts in the area is Praia D?El Rey (0800 977 7001)
a 600-acre triangle built by Portuguese developer Béltico Group between the Berlengas Islands natural reserve and the postcard-pretty medieval town of Obidos
Development is now ongoing at the spectacular Aldeia Real
which runs alongside Praia D?El Rey?s golf course and enjoys far-reaching views across the Atlantic Ocean
This neighbourhood offers only a limited number of villa plots ranging from 0.4 to 0.69 acres
more affordable plots are available at the Aldeia des Descobertas
where buyers can then choose from six prototype villas designed by the Praia d?El Rey architectural department
Plots start from ?146,000 (£97,300) and villa builds from ?267,800 (£178,500)
A selection of cheaper townhouses and apartments is available at Vila dos Principes and Burgo D
Sebastiaõ from ?195,500 (£130,300)
Praia D?El Rey homeowners can join the spa and gym at the local five-star Marriott hotel at special rates
it is set among pine forest and sand dunes
another development is seeing the light these days
Bom Sucesso (020?7589 8844) is set inland and borders a lagoon near Obidos on one side
Bom Sucesso?s trademark is cutting-edge architecture
Portuguese luxury developers Acordo called on architects Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo to create the site?s master plan
and drafted 14 leading Portuguese architects to design the facilities
Privacy and low density are the key concepts behind the development
which will see about 600 homes set in some 400 acres
the vast majority of which will have only one floor
will take up less than 6.5% of the land and eucalyptus and fir woods will have the lion?s share of the acreage
the heart of the resort will be an 18-hole golf course
Although golf aficionados are likely to account for the majority of buyers
a tennis club and a dedicated beach linked with a shuttle bus
Bom Sucesso is attracting 40-something buyers who often come from media or creative backgrounds
says Paul Rogers of Hamptons International
Prices at the resort start from ?165,000 (£110,000) for a one-bedroom townhouse all the way to ?660,000 (£440,000) and beyond for a five-bedroom villa
says Caroline Reid of Hamptons International
?Prices represent exceptional value in this up-and-coming region of Portugal.
another up-and-coming region is seeing an increase in interest from British buyers
Historically the preserve of Americans looking for a quiet place in the sun
has seen a recent increase in British and European demand
?With property prices increasing throughout traditional European hotspots
British and European buyers are looking to alternative destinations for second-home investments,
says Ciara Shiel of local developers Regent Ltd
?Turks and Caicos offers a stable government
miles of uncrowded white-sand beaches and sparkling turquoise waters filled with sand dollars and starfish.
Although the Caribbean seascape is undeniably appealing
more prosaic reason is also driving droves of British buyers to the area: a weak dollar
official currency and a favourable exchange rate means that the purchasing power of sterling and the euro are greater these days
Add to this that Turks and Caicos has tax-neutral status
capital gains or property tax other than stamp duty at the time the transaction takes place
despite the hurricane season (which runs from June to October)
is by far the most popular destination for overseas buyers
probably because of its international airport
The island has everything from beachfront developments to hilltop houses
the latter particularly sought-after for their panoramic views
which has been rated one of the best beaches in the world
The easiest way to get a place here is to buy an apartment in a beachfront condominium
Of the four garden villas in the yet-to-be-finished Regent Grand condominium development
two have been sold and the other two have been reserved
is designed in a daring mix of neo-Classical Italian and Caribbean styles
Each of the apartments affords views over Grace Bay?and yes
hurricane protection is available for all external windows
two heated Jacuzzis and a floodlit tennis court
Prices start from $740,000 (about £410,000) for a beach-level two-bedroom flat and go up to $3.1m (about £1.7m) for a four-bedroom penthouse with roof garden and a hot tub in the oceanfront terrace
The Regent Grand expect to complete the works in spring 2007 but 70% of the residences have already been sold or reserved

It has a cinema, an auditorium, exhibition rooms and a garden where you can recharge your batteries.

But it’s a popular place for a full meal, too. You can try suckling pig sandwiches, pizzas, sushi, ceviche, vegetarian food, traditional Portuguese sweets and some excellent gin and wine. Pull up a high chair at one of the tables and enjoy.
©DRYears of experience and high-quality ingredients make Petúlia one of the city’s best pastry shops. For special occasions, it’s hard to beat: its pão-de-ló sponge cake (a popular Easter treat) and bolo-rei fruit cake (for Christmas) are marvellous. So are the húngaros (chocolate- dipped biscuits), bolinhos de coco (coconut cookies) and savoury snacks such as pies and meat croquettes.
testeAn icon of contemporary architecture, the House of Music was designed by Dutch star Rem Koolhaas and opened in 2005. It hosts an eclectic programme of shows and children’s workshops, and has a top-floor restaurant with a great panoramic view. Guided tours of the building can be booked in advance.
©João SaramagoThe recently modernised Porto Planetarium hosts regular stargazing sessions, exhibitions and activities for the little ones. This summer, until September 29, shows in English are screened at 4pm every weekday. At other times staff may be able to provide explanations in English – check the website, which will also have information for October onwards.

©João SaramagoFlat, flaky, moist and well-filled bolas de Lamego are a speciality of the city of the same name in the Viseu district but have been established in Porto for a few months now. Among the most popular here are ones with cooked or cured ham, codfish, sardine and chicken. They also do homemade biscuits that’ll go perfectly with your coffee.
©João SaramagoGuided visits are available around the largest synagogue in the Iberian peninsula. Aside from the building’s history, visitors can learn more about Judaism, the Sephardis and the local Jewish community, whose leading founder was army captain and self-taught historian Artur Barros Basto.

If you enter via the Avenida da Boavista (though the park does have other entrances), you’ll find these straight away. On Saturdays the park hosts an organic produce market.
