FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. ― In the top of the seventh inning at Baum-Walker Stadium Friday night, Casey Borba and Will Gasparino committed a baseball sin that Texas coach Jim Schlossnagle couldn't accept
Their penance, as determined by Schlossnagle, was watching the remainder of Texas' 6-1 defeat to Arkansas from the bench
Tommy Farmer IV smacked a high pop fly near home plate in foul territory
took off at a gallop toward second ‒ as one might with two outs
Arkansas catcher Ryder Helfrick caught the pop fly and easily doubled off Borba by tossing the ball to first
That’s unforgivable," Schlossnagle said postgame
But we’re trying to build a program here as well as a team
MORE COVERAGE: Arkansas starter Zach Root dominated Texas baseball. Could he have been a Longhorn?
Schlossnagle said both Borba and Gasparino would be in the lineup for the series finale on Saturday afternoon
where the Longhorns' mission will be to avoid a sweep
Saturday's defeat secured the first series loss of the season for Texas
It snapped a streak of 13 consecutive conference series victories for the Longhorns ‒ their longest such streak in over 35 years
The mistake by Borba and Gasparino added a flair of self-sabotage to an already ugly Texas performance
the Longhorns ( again found themselves flummoxed by Arkansas pitching
Razorback starter Gage Wood struck out nine in four innings of work
blemished only by Rylan Galvan's solo home run in the fourth inning
Gabe Gaeckle and Aiden Jimenez combined for five innings of shutout relief work behind him
INJURIES: Texas baseball: Jim Schlossnagle issues injury updates for Max Belyeu, Jonah Williams
Combine those numbers with a listless effort against Arkansas lefty Zach Root in a 9-0 loss Thursday and you get 29 Texas strikeouts in 66 plate appearances ‒ good for a strikeout rate of roughly 44% in the series
"I’m not happy about it," Schlossnagle said
we’re taking strikes as we’re trying to get back in the game
You can’t hit a three-run homer when nobody’s on base
That’s just part of it when you’re facing a great pitching staff."
The Texas pitching staff again failed to keep its sputtering offense in the game
Starter Luke Harrison allowed four runs in four innings of work
The biggest blow came in the second inning
when he loaded the bases with three free passes and Arkansas' Kuhio Aloy roped a three-run double into the gap
Harrison and four Texas relievers combined to issue a season-high nine walks
compounding the problem by hitting five Razorbacks
"Just played very poorly," Schlossnagle said
It’ll be interesting to see how we respond (Saturday)."

When Texas baseball head coach Jim Schlossnagle took over as the skipper in Austin
he inherited a mismatched group of batters
many who probably felt like they had more left in the tank before they left Austin for the pros
[Pre-order THE LONGHORN ALPHABET today and teach your little ones the A to Z of Texas Football!]
Fans were sad to see Jared Thomas, Peyton Powell and Porter Brown go, but Schlossnagle returned five of the team’s core eight batters, including the best two in conference play last year: Max Belyeu and Jalin Flores. With rising sophomore second baseman Dee Kennedy being the only true rotational player leaving via the transfer portal, Schlossnagle succeeded in bringing back almost every starter he could.
“I think it all has to do with the culture we have in the clubhouse,” Borba said. “I mean we’re a tight brotherhood. Everyone’s rooting for each other, no one’s praying on anyone’s downfall, obviously. And, you know, whatever we can do to help the Horns win, we’re gonna do.”
As the 2025 season began, it became clear that Farmer had earned his coach’s trust. A speedy outfielder with a plus glove and bat, Farmer’s diverse skillset brought him quickly into the starting lineup, starting throughout the outfield in both of Texas’ first two series. Farmer has now started 11 of the team’s first 14 games, appearing as a pinch runner or defensive substitution in the other three.
Borba’s path was filled with a few more bumps and bruises along the way. Borba only started in one of Texas’ first seven games, with Schloss taking a chance on him to be able to field the second base position. Borba looked uncomfortable, and by the start of the Las Vegas Classic he had taken just five ABs and recorded one hit.

Farmer and Borba are two of the most valuable players on this team but are far from household names for the more casual Texas baseball fan. Schlossnagle seems to have found a core of nine guys for his starting lineup, and the emergence of these stellar underclassmen has given a layer to this team that many thought it lacked heading into the season: depth from the positions not already filled by returning mainstays.

James DeCaro said officers arrived and learned that Brian De Borba
It was also learned that De Borba had discharged a gun at a wall on the first floor inside the residence
Officers determined there were family members still inside the home

He exited the home without further incident and was taken into custody
De Borba was transported to an area hospital for an evaluation
“The safety of our community remains a top priority
and we commend the responding officers and the assistance of the family members for their efforts in resolving the situation without additional conflict,” Lake Villa Police Chief Rochelle Tisinai said
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and approved one count of reckless discharge of a firearm
De Borba turned himself in to the Lake County Jail on the warrant on Thursday morning
DeCaro said residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious or concerning behavior to law enforcement
“Mental health resources are available for those in need
and we urge individuals facing crises to reach out for support,” DeCaro said
Court records show De Borba was scheduled to appear for a First Appearance Court hearing on Thursday morning

A five-run seventh inning gave the Horns a win in their SEC opener
Moved up two hours because of inclement weather forecast in the Starkville area on Friday evening, the No. 11 Texas Longhorns came through on time to secure an 8-7 victory in the program’s SEC opener over the Mississippi State Bulldogs by delivering the game’s biggest inning at Dude Noble Field
After Texas was finally able to chase starter Pico Kohn in the seventh inning after a hit by pitch and single to start the frame
sophomore center fielder Will Gasparino went the other way against a shift to single past the first baseman to score one run and junior catcher Rylan Galvan singled up the middle to score another to tie the game at 5-5

Neither team scored again until putting up matching runs in the fifth inning when sophomore second baseman Ethan Mendoza tripled and scored on a pickoff play at third when the catcher threw the ball into left field
Texas rallied to take the an 8-5 lead in the five-run seventh capped by Borba’s bomb and needed the bullpen to make it stand after Spencer departed in the sixth inning
having allowed five runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts and one walk
Senior right-hander Andre Duplantier replaced the Indiana State transfer
walking the first batter he faced on a full count to load the bases
but striking out the next batter swinging the end the threat
Duplantier faced the minimum over the next two innings before facing some self-inflicted trouble in the ninth
but then throwing a wild pitch and issuing another walk that prompted head coach Jim Schlossnagle to make a call to the bullpen for freshman left-hander Dylan Volantis
the Sunday starter last weekend reserved for a stopping role or long relief if necessary against Mississippi State
Volantis allowed an 0-2 double to left center that scored two runs credited to Duplantier
but ended the game by inducing a groundout into the hole at shortstop played well by sophomore Jalin Flores to end the game and secure the program’s first SEC victory

Dangerous weather conditions forecast in the Starkville area on the Saturday forced the postponement of Saturday’s game — the two teams will play two seven-inning games on Sunday starting at 1 p.m
The second game will start about 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first game and will air on SEC Network+
Texas baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle approached Casey Borba recently to offer some reassurance
Borba, a sophomore infielder, had started just two of the Longhorns' first 11 games this season
Schlossnagle wanted him to know he'd get his shot
I'm looking for opportunities to get you in there," Schlossnagle recalled telling Borba
Saturday, the game did exactly that. Borba strode to the plate with two outs and the bases full of Longhorns in the fourth inning
and delivered a double to the wall in center field that cleared the bases
That proved to be the biggest hit of the game in Texas' 8-3 victory over Santa Clara at UFCU Disch-Falk Field
The clutch knock continued a remarkable week for Borba
who received his third start of the season on Tuesday and rewarded Schlossnagle for his faith with a home run and a double

it's tough to get some guys out of there when you're trying to put your best offense and defense together," Schlossnagle said Saturday
Jalin Flores knocked in two more runs Saturday to provide the rest of the offensive thrust the Longhorns (12-1) needed for their pitching staff
Texas starter Luke Harrison walked three batters and hit another in his three-plus innings of work
"He's going to have to be better before we go to Starkville," Schlossnagle said

An employee at a Yorktown boarding school for students with autism is facing a felony endangerment charge after he was accused of repeatedly shoving a student earlier this month
was arrested following a two-week investigation after police were notified of the employee's behavior at Shrub Oak International School
The incident occurred late in the afternoon on Nov
Borba-Ferreira shoved the non-verbal student multiple times while walking down a hallway and then repeatedly pushed him into a closed door and yelled in his face
After turning himself in at police headquarters Thursday
Borba-Ferreira was arraigned in Town Court on a single charge of first-degree endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person
He was released without bail and is due back in court Jan
According to Borba Ferreira's LinkedIn page
he was an educational assistant at the school
A school official did not return a phone message and Borba-Ferreira's lawyer was not immediately available
The school opened seven years ago on the site of a former Jesuit seminary in Mohegan Lake and educates children
adolescents and young adults from across the country
It was the subject of an expose earlier this year by ProPublica
which detailed some parents' concerns about treatment of students at the school
inadequate staffing and their frustration that there is no state oversight of the school
ProPublica reported that two other staff members had been arrested on abuse charges in recent years
One case involving an employee accused of punching students in the stomach was dismissed
The other involved a teacher accused of threatening to throw a desk at a 22-year-old student from Chicago and rapping on her forehead with his knuckles
He pleaded guilty this year to a misdemeanor endangering charge and was sentenced to three years probation

A big double from Casey Borba helped the Horns create enough separation for a comfortable win against the Broncos on Saturday
A three-run double by sophomore third baseman Casey Borba in the fourth inning was big for the No. 12 Texas Longhorns
which also received an extended outing from junior right-hander Ruger Riojas out of the bullpen for an 8-3 win over the Santa Clara Broncos on Saturday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field

“Casey Borba is just steady. I told him I was looking for opportunities to get him in there, I told him just hang in there and he would get his chance,” Texas head coach Jim Schlossnagle said
but struggled to deliver the game-changing blow to the Broncos
Texas scored two runs in the first inning on doubles by junior shortstop Jalin Flores and sophomore outfielder Tommy Farmer
who played center and left field for the Horns on Saturday
but Borba stranded two runners when he grounded out weakly to the pitcher
it's gotta look like a beach ball to @young_jflow right now #HookEm pic.twitter.com/0JKNHHeoCS

Texas loaded the bases with one out and Flores was able to drive home a run on a fielder’s choice before freshman designated hitter Adrian Rodriguez popped out to the second baseman and senior first baseman Kimble Schuessler flied out to center field to leave two more runners on base
Farmer was thrown out trying to steal second after a single in the third inning
Borba walked and scored on a double by sophomore center fielder Will Gasparino
but Gasparino never got past third base because junior catcher Rylan Galvan and sophomore second baseman Ethan Mendoza both hit flyouts
included missed opportunities when Gasparino drew a walk to put runners on first and second with two outs before Galvan struck out swinging on a full count
Texas scored its final run in the eight inning after Flores doubled
Rodriguez moved him over to third with a groundout to the right side
and Schuessler came through with a single up the middle after hitting the ball hard several times without any hits to show for it
Mendoza continues to hit well, going 3-for-5, but junior right fielder Max Belyeu struggled behind the Arizona State transfer
striking out twice and going hitless in this three at bats
And Flores keeps hitting balls into gaps with two doubles in each of his last four games
getting two hits and presenting as dangerous enough that Santa Clara’s pitchers tried to throw inside against him and hit him twice
The Longhorns had their own command issues on the mound as junior left-hander Luke Harrison pitched from behind too often
a difficult challenge to overcome since he doesn’t have a power arm — because of three walks and a hit batter
Harrison only made it two batters into the fourth inning
allowing a leadoff walk and a double that put runners on second and third with no outs
Schlossnagle pulled Harrison and inserted Riojas
who induced three straight groundouts to limit the damage to one run before turning in one of the longest outings of his career
throwing 87 pitches over 4.2 innings to pick up his third win of the season while working around three walks
Riojas allowed single runs fifth and eighth innings before senior right-hander Andre Duplantier retired all four batters that he faced
Texas goes for the series sweep on Sunday with first pitch at 1 p.m

Print “Can we talk?” Joan Rivers’ stand-up tagline had a way of turning audiences into confidants
Rivers may be remembered for her relentless jokes about Elizabeth Taylor’s weight
but she herself was her most relentless target
her miserable childhood earned her not only the adoration of fans but also their trust
She was the candid cutup they’d like to have on speed-dial
Making a play about the life and career of Rivers, who died suddenly in 2014 while undergoing a medical procedure
is challenging not because her story wasn’t dramatic but because there was no one like her
rampaging delivery and path-breaking fearlessness back to life
“Joan,” a new play by Daniel Goldstein directed by David Ivers at South Coast Repertory
gives it a shot by divvying up the central role between two actors
Elinor Gunn portrays young Joan while Tessa Auberjonois plays the beloved comic
Auberjonois gives a rough approximation of Rivers’ New York accent but can’t master her comic timing
(Who could?) The jokes Joan tells are funny because they’re so outrageous — not because of how they’re told
Joan’s expensive clothes and tight face lend the impression of a Bel-Air battleship
Auberjonois captures the breathless ambition along with the insecurity that fueled Rivers’ drive
But it’s Young Joan who fills us in on the comic’s origin story
Pudgy as a girl and not particularly popular with the boys
she refused to be judged by patriarchal standards even if she judged herself harshly for falling short
Making people laugh was her revenge on society’s shortsightedness
were as conventional as they were upwardly mobile
Molinsky (played by Andrew Borba and Auberjonois) worked their way to Larchmont
and expected Joan to settle down with a well-off husband in a comparably wealthy town
Their daughter’s determination to become a comic was perplexing to them
but her professional dream refused to die and the marriage ended not long after she realized that the rush of stand-up was more intense than the relief she felt at having nabbed a husband
Goldstein’s background is in musical theater — he won the Kleban Prize for most promising musical theater librettist — and “Joan” is written in the broad
(Having arrived a few minutes late because of crashes on the 405
I read the script to confirm my assessment.) No one is holding a vehicle like “Joan” to Chekhovian standards
Audiences are happy to spend time in the company of a celebrity protagonist
Tessa Auberjonois as Joan Rivers and Zachary Prince as Jimmy Fallon in “Joan” at South Coast Repertory
(Scott Smeltzer) But a playwright must figure out what story he’d like to pull out of the mass of real-life material
This is a mistake that Aristotle cautioned against in “Poetics.” A strong plot
he asserted in his unmatched analysis of tragedy
is not the same as an interesting biography
because “infinitely various are the incidents in one man’s life,” while effective drama depends on consequential action as a unifying focus
Goldstein has plenty of consequential actions to choose from
but he slides into a recap of a story that I mostly already knew from interviews and the superb documentary “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work.” “The Marvelous Mrs
Maisel” and “Hacks” — both of which use Rivers’ life
as a model for their protagonists — have taken us inside the personal and professional hurdles of being a trailblazing female stand-up comic in the Rivers mode
“Joan” is very much an authorized bio-drama
The playwright has had the blessing of daughter Melissa Rivers
who is not only a creative consultant but also a central character (played by Gunn)
Rivers is too complicated a personality for hagiography
who never forgave her for starting a rival late-night talk show after he had made her his show’s permanent guest host
is handled with exceptional fairness to him
Rivers’ second husband and Melissa’s father
who fell into a terrible depression after Rivers’ talk show on Fox went kaput
The network gave Rivers an ultimatum — either Edgar goes as a producer or the show is canceled
She sided with her husband but then held it against him
and it ties back to the central conflict of Rivers’ life — success vs
Melissa’s presence in “Joan” is intriguing but ultimately distracting
explaining to the audience how the fluid casting will work
(Zachary Prince rounds out the multitasking ensemble.) She also serves as a witness and occasional contradicting commentator
Joan’s death yields the summing up to Melissa
She has an epiphany about her own ambitiousness
The main impression I had of Rivers was that she was whip-smart — not just quick but wise. She had no vanity about the hustle of showbiz. She shared with a drama critic she hardly knew just what went into her decision making. I not only liked her but admired her frankness.
My earliest memory of Rivers comes from an anthology comedy album that was passed down to me as a boy. In high school, I would stay up late whenever she was on “The Tonight Show.” When I was an editor at the Village Voice, she used to test out material at a club in the East Village near my office, and I sometimes would go after we closed the paper. This was Rivers unplugged, foul-mouthed in a way that made me feel like a squeamish altar boy. (No easy task!)
She never played it safe, though I have to confess I found her comedy out of sync with the times when I watched the 2012 TV special “Joan Rivers: Don’t Start With Me” a couple of years ago. She was a First Amendment absolutist when it came to humor, but comedy evolves and one generation’s daring hilarity is another’s insensitive cruelty. (A riff about the physical characteristics of Mexicans made me cringe.)
In trying to tell Rivers’ whole story, “Joan” winds up skimming the surface. I would have ended the play sooner. One possibility would be when she returns to stand-up after Edgar’s shocking death, making jokes about a tragedy that had ripped her heart out. Her indomitable will to stay in the game was her noble strength — and perhaps also her personal flaw.
David Mamet might know how to make the most of a character like Joan Rivers, an entertainment hero and antihero, whose story was an American one of success at any cost. That Rivers bore that cost with intrepid humor is worthy of drama. “Joan” doesn’t quite do her justice, but she was a tough act to follow.

it is important for a program to hang on to its rising stars
with two key players announcing that they remain locked into the program
Belyeu was soon followed by freshman Casey Borba, who posted a picture with the caption "Hook'Em" to confirm his return as well.
designated hitter Kimble Schuessler and catcher Rylan Galvan also all posted similar messages on social media
Belyeu played in 15 games with four starts as the designated hitter
his 341 hits with 14 doubles and 49 RBIs led him to being awarded Big 12 Conference Player of the Year
“I just feel like the kid has earned the right to be where he is right now because he’s putting in the work,” former head coach David Pierce said
“He’s just been a tremendous guy to have in our lineup.”
Freshman infielder Casey Borba entered the program as the best third baseman in California Southern Section high school baseball
Borba had four home runs and a solid defensive performance such as the 10 putouts against Kansas on May 17 -- a series that ended as a sweep for the Longhorns
“I think he can [have a great] impact at Texas,” Borba's father Eric said after his son committed to Texas
“He’s going to have an opportunity to go and compete for a spot as a freshman
his desire to win and his commitment is going to put him in a position to compete [for a starting role].”

Exhibitions and Interviews reported on from London
At Elizabeth Xi Bauer’s new gallery in Deptford
an earthy dialogue between two artists may be more timely than either realise
Five works by veteran ceramicist Marta Jakobovits are surrounded by another five by up-and-coming sculptor Anderson Borba
Jakobovits presents her series Spiritual Islands (2025)
Each work is a meticulous composition of different objects
shells and other found objects in arrangements in which Jakobovits’ own ceramics are embedded
Every table displays different organic textures and redolent colours
blackened bowl on a bed of brown and purple leaves
the large central ceramic object is almost like a big
flanked by receptacles that could have come from an archeological dig
decayed beaker-like forms rise up from the curated detritus on the table — it could read as an architectural vision of broken and decayed infrastructure after civilisation has passed
Gloriously golden leaves set the tone for ‘v’ and the parallel strips of bark distinguish ‘iv’
Their location on tables and the mix of nature and ceramics are almost like a call to sit for a meal
but the nourishment lies in meditation of the works
You are taken into Jakabovits’ mind as she forms shapes
symmetries and relationships from her ingredients
Jakobovits weaves her own ceramic practice into a reverence for nature
magical world refracted through the artist’s soul.
Borba’s works meet you at eye level from their positions surrounding Jakobovits’ tables
Borba has applied different finishes to the varied forms
shellac and the application of montaged images
The attention to surface appearance may well come from his past in the fashion industry
a thin vertical plinth serves as a body for Borba’s head — an abstracted
textured form from which the mouth emerges
Features protruding at the back suggest eyes and an ear
Head Stone (2024) is another sentinel-like figure
the head a simple grey pebble mounted on a gnarled and patterned stick
It’s as thin as a Giacometti figure after a diet
Head Stone stands between The Hover (2024)
in which what looks like a coconut shell suggests a head
edgy work is energised by a shellac-varnished surface
predominantly red like the blood a mosquito sucks
some of them photographic images with almost microscopic detail — you can even make out people in them
and includes imagery of buttercups in the small
wall-mounted Toast & Buttercup (2025).
The dialogue between the work of Jakobovits and Borba is between very different shapes
between her horizontality and his upright totems
and between a timeless spirit of nature and individual spirits inhabiting Borba’s standing figures
But what unites them is an instinctive reach into the materials they both use
and an artisanal approach to shape visions of wonder and mystery.
Some say that the digital revolution is driving a phase change in human civilisation
We are sleepwalking into a digital future where even creativity and artisan skills could be redundant
Harvest shows how two artists from different generations compose works by intuition and craft them by hand and eye
and reveals the workings of artistic practice
personal and emotional — all things alien to an algorithm
Harvest could be a much-needed clarion call for human agency in art.
Harvest is at Elizabeth Xi Bauer Gallery, Fuel Tank

With the goal to develop management tools to mitigate the severity of shoot blight on pear caused by Erwinia amylovora and prevent fire blight canker development from infected shoots on pear tree wood
we evaluated five preventive treatments in inoculated experiments over 2-years
We focused on foliar spray and trunk injection applications of extract of giant knotweed
as a plant resistance activator candidate and on comparisons to antibiotics
Five foliar applications of RSE (2.24 L/ha) on 6-year-old trees of cultivar ‘Bartlett’ resulted in 100% control of shoot blight severity and canker incidence in both years of evaluation
The RSE trunk injection in fall of the first year did not control the disease allowing 75% of shoot severity and 38.5% of canker incidence
providing 85.7% control of shoot blight severity and 89.8% control of canker incidence
Antibiotics oxytetracycline (OTC) and streptomycin (STM) did not provide consistent control in the second year in comparison to the first year
OTC (trunk injection and foliar spray) and STM were effective
in the second they were not effective allowing 69 – 96% of shoot blight severity and 70 – 92% of canker incidence
Regardless of the inconsistency in the effectiveness of antibiotics
which are not recommended for shoot blight control due to risks of promoting antibiotic resistance
five preventive spray applications of RSE could be used on pear trees to prevent shoot blight and canker development
the RSE spray program we developed could serve as a valuable control tool that could help prevent sudden outbreaks of shoot blight during summer and pear tree death from fire blight cankers with no risk for pathogen resistance
sachalinensis extract probably activates SAR in the host
the full potential of this extract and SAR candidate is unexplored but promising for conventional and organic apple and pear production
sachalinensis extract could aid in prevention of sudden outbreaks of shoot blight
With the gap of no synthetic or natural compounds similar to PCA that can be used in pear for shoot blight and canker management, the objective of this study was to determine if the preventive applications of R. sachalinensis extract can reduce pear shoot blight severity and prevent the resulting canker development on pear wood, repeating the success we had on apple (Aćimović and Meredith, 2017)
Our goals were to deliver the total cumulative rate of 11.2 L/ha in 5 consecutive spray applications of 2.24 L/ha on pear in spring and prove the consistency of the effects by evaluating for two years
even though they are not recommended for managing shoot blight in commercial orchards due to higher risks of antibiotic resistance from summer applications
We hypothesized that a reduction in shoot blight severity by Regalia will slow down or stop E
amylovora invasion via shoots and thus reduce or prevent the initiation of fire blight cankers on wood
We aimed to develop a new spray program for use in conventional and organic pear production that could provide a similar effect as PCA on apple shoots and cankers and become a tool for pear fruit growers to combat shoot blight and prevent tree death from cankers
Pear orchard experiments were performed at Cornell University’s Hudson Valley Research Laboratory in Highland
in 2019 (N41° 45 ‘ 1.594’’
W73° 58 ‘ 3.941’’) and at Virginia Tech’s Alson H
Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Winchester
In 2019 we used a block of 6-year-old trees of Pyrus communis cultivar ‘Bartlett’
planted with 2 m between trees and 4.5 m between rows
In 2022 we used a block of 6-year-old trees of P
which we planted at 3 m between trees and 5 m between rows
The soil fertilization schedule in Highland
and potassium (NPK) 15-0-30 with B was applied to the block delivering 41.9 kg N/ha
NPK 15-0-30 with B was applied to the block
of a mixture of fertilizers yielding NPK 25-3-3 (no B) was applied to the block
pear trees were planted in early March 2022 and were not fertilized
In 2019 and 2022, we inoculated shoots by a stem cut inoculation method on May 26 and May 11, respectively, as per Santander et al. (2019; 2022a; 2022b) by delivering 40 μL of E
adjusted to 2 x 108 CFU/ml using the micropipette
The inoculum suspension was cooled on ice until the inoculation
A total of 10 selected shoots pear each pear tree in each treatment were inoculated
three replicates for each treatment plus three untreated replicates were also inoculated
plus four untreated tree replicates were also inoculated
The three and four tree replicates used as untreated controls for 2019 and 2022
were inoculated in the same way as in treatments 1 to 5 but did not receive any chemicals
Regalia trunk injections were performed on October 10
All the spray treatments were spray applied dilute to drip (935.4 L/ha) using a tractor-carrier sprayer with a brass handgun (Pak-Tank 4 × 25-gal tanks
OR) to secure good coverage with the spray solution
Table 1 Preventive spray and trunk-injection treatments for fire blight management evaluated in 2019 and 2022 with 5% extract of giant knotweed
streptomycin (FireWall) and oxytetracycline (ArborOTC
FireLine) to reduce shoot blight severity and initiation of fire blight cankers on perennial wood of pear cultivar ‘Bartlett’
we calculated shoot blight severity percent by multiplying the ratio of necrotic shoot length
amylovora invasion of bark on perennial wood from the infected shoots
was calculated as the percentage of cankers that developed on wood after shoot inoculations in relation to the total number of inoculated shoots
For each canker developed on perennial pear wood from inoculated shoots
In 2019 we rated the shoot blight severity (%)
and canker length (in centimeters) only on June 23
and canker length on the same or from the same shoots on May 31
mean percent of initiated cankers on perennial pear wood (canker incidence)
and mean canker length were calculated from 10 shoot replicates and expressed per each replicate tree
and mean canker length for each treatment were calculated from the three (2019) and four (2022) replicate tree means
The treatment was considered a fixed factor
The response variables analyzed by the ANOVA on the tree as the experimental unit were shoot blight severity (as a percentage)
fire blight canker incidence (as a percentage)
Random variables were the error associated with the tree as an experimental unit
the ANOVA test was conducted separately for each time point for consistency of data presentation and easier comparison to the 2019 data set (P < 0.05)
All data were analyzed using the MIXED procedure in SAS ver
raw data were tested for normal distribution of residuals (Shapiro-Wilk test; normal probability plot of the residuals) and equal variances of residuals (Levene’s test; box plot of residual variances
which are necessary to fulfil the assumptions of ANOVA (F-test)
The 2019 data on canker incidence were square root-transformed to equalize the variances of residuals
thus fulfilling all the assumptions of ANOVA
The 2022 data on canker incidence from the first time point were log-transformed to equalize the variances of residuals
The 2022 data on canker incidence from the second time point were square root-transformed to equalize the variances of residuals
The 2022 data on canker incidence from the third time point were arcsine-transformed to normalize the distribution of residuals thus fulfilling all the assumptions of ANOVA
The canker length data from 2019 were square root-transformed to normalize the distribution of residuals thus fulfilling all the assumptions of ANOVA
The 2022 data on canker length from the first time point were log-transformed to equalize the variances of residuals thus fulfilling all the assumptions of ANOVA
The 2022 data on canker length from the second time point were log-transformed to normalize the distribution of residuals thus fulfilling all the assumptions of ANOVA
The 2022 data on canker length from the third time point log-transformed to normalize the distribution of residuals thus fulfilling all the assumptions of ANOVA
All pairwise comparisons of treatments were performed using the LSD post-hoc test (p < 0.05) to determine the significant differences between the treatments
Means separation for one-time point in 2019 and for each time point separately in 2022 were conducted by hand-drawing lines connecting the means of similar spray treatments and assigning letters according to these lines
each treatment mean consisted of three replicate trees
with each replicate tree mean consisting of 10 shoots per tree
and each mean shown in the form of a histogram
each treatment mean consisted of four replicate trees
with each tree replicate mean consisting of 10 shoots per tree
and each mean shown in a form of a histogram
Error bars in the histograms represent the standard error of the mean calculated from the original raw data
FireWall only numerically reduced severity by 25.5%
trunk injection of Regalia did not control the disease allowing 75% of shoot blight severity
it provided 85.7% control of shoot blight severity
Figure 1 Shoot blight severity (Tukey test, p<0.05) and canker incidence (LSD test, p<0.05) on June 23 on pear cultivar ‘Bartlett’ after preventive spray and trunk injection treatments in 2019. Application rates are shown in Table 1
Shoots were inoculated on May 26 at 2.5- to 5-cm shoot size with E
Treatment bars of the same pattern followed by different letters are significantly different
with each tree mean consisting of 10 shoots per tree
Error bars represent the standard error of the mean
Figure 2 Shoot blight severity on pear cultivar ‘Bartlett’ after preventive spray and trunk injection treatments in 2022. Application rates are shown in Table 1
Shoots were inoculated on May 11 at 2.5- to 5-cm shoot size with E
Treatment bars of the same pattern followed by different letters are significantly different (LSD test
Figure 3 Canker incidence on perennial wood of pear cultivar ‘Bartlett’ from infected shoots after preventive spray and trunk injection treatments in 2022. Application rates are shown in Table 1
Treatment lines followed by different letters are significantly different (LSD test
the most ineffective treatment was Arbor-OTC trunk injection with canker length reaching 1.8 cm in 2019 and 15.6 cm in 2022
Figure 4 Length of fire blight cankers on perennial wood of pear cultivar ‘Bartlett’ developing from inoculated shoots after preventive spray and trunk injection treatments in 2019. Application rates are shown in Table 1
Treatment bars followed by different letters are significantly different (test
Figure 5 Length of fire blight cankers on perennial wood of pear cultivar ‘Bartlett’ from inoculated shoots after preventive spray and trunk injection treatments in 2022. Application rates are shown in Table 1
Canker damage is much worse on young tree tissues of juvenile trees and cankers can serve as inoculum sources for future infections on mature trees
we recommend through this study that five preventive spray applications of Regalia in spring are a potent option to reduce or prevent shoot blight onset and fire blight initiation on perennial pear wood
it provided much better control of shoot blight and canker incidence as inoculation was done much closer in time to the injection

Jonathan Evens views an exhibition by two artists in Deptford
Installation view of “Harvest” currently in the Elizabeth Xi Bauer Gallery
MARTA JAKOBOVITS is a ceramicist who creates works intended to be seen in relationship with other pieces and with natural objects such as leaves
it is always with an eye to those elements of her creation which connect with other forms
Her latest works have been shaped and formed on low ovoid plinths
meaning that the viewer looks down on an entire landscape of natural and artificial forms
It is sometimes difficult to tell one from another
as Jakobovits wants her work to be in dialogue with
meaning that our interest in them is not simply in how the pieces were formed and the way in which they relate to the natural objects that Jakobovits has placed with them
but also how they work as equivalents for mountains
Jakobovits is constantly evolving her practice and her installations
These works when reinstalled elsewhere will necessarily differ
as the natural elements cannot be exactly the same in another location
making this iteration of these works absolutely unique
she regularly incorporates new discoveries in her making
whether intentional or the utilisation of happy accidents
to create new forms and patterns through the combination of clay and glaze
A large circular bowl-shaped form at the centre of one spiritual island has cracks and crevices in the glaze — evocative of dried lake beds — a feature first found as an unforeseen effect
but one that she later learnt to replicate
Jakobovits adopts a meditative and prayerful approach to creation and displays her work in ways that encourage contemplation in the viewer
An earlier exhibition included long works laid on the floor like pathways
around which one walked as a form of pilgrimage
aware of rising sea levels through the low display of these works
Jakobovits views art as a form of prayer and says: “These ceramic pieces represent the imprint of my soul and hands as well as the spiritual relation with segments of visual arts of the groups of objects
installations and spiritual islands created through different senses
Courtesy of the Artists and Elizabeth Xi Bauer Gallery
LondonMarta Jakobovits speaks of shapes in a relationship with natural materials
These spiritual islands are equivalents for and
They are also natural and handmade forms brought together in symbiotic relationship to create something more than the individual parts
This work of unifying and reconciling is ultimately the work of the kingdom of God and these works are beautiful prophetic signs of the harmony that is yet to come
she has said: “[My work is] a personal approach to trying to make the invisible of the conscious and subconscious psyche visible through [my chosen] materials
This is an ongoing process; it is very important to me
putting them in a relationship with natural materials
or even bringing them back as a reverence for nature
[It is] an intuitive dialogue between me and what is outside of me.”
her work has been paired with that of Anderson Borba
often found in skips around his studio in east London
The wood is first shaped and burnt before magazine cut-outs are collaged on to its surfaces
leading to a final stage of carving and varnishing
vertical nature of Borba’s work contrasts well with the expansive horizontal archipelago of Jakobovits’s work
there is a dialogue between their practices
fire their materials using a kiln and a blow torch
and build layers through glazes and collages
The result is works that speak of an intrinsic connection between art and nature
captured through the tactile relationship between shape
“Marta Jakobovits and Anderson Borba: Harvest” is at the Elizabeth Xi Bauer Gallery, Deptford, Fuel Tank, 8-12 Creekside, London SE8, until 26 April (open Wednesday to Saturday 12-6 p.m. or by appointment). Phone 020 3048 5220. elizabethxibauer.com

Maikon Borba, a leader of the Southeast Florida Church of Christ, spelled aloud for his 4-year-old daughter
It’s a familiar task for the 40-year-old Brazilian immigrant
taught English as a second language for almost 15 years in Novo Hamburgo
The Church of Christ they attended was modest — 50 attendees on a good Sunday. The Borbas participated in the congregation’s Let’s Start Talking class and welcomed mission groups from U.S. churches and Harding University in Searcy
leans into the wind at the Pompano Beach Pier in Florida during a family outing
They never expected to become missionaries to their people in a foreign land
Maikon Borba had graduated from Harding with a degree in Bible and missions and moved his family 36 miles north of Miami
“It’s not that we didn’t have faith,” Maikon recalled

United Nations of Faith: Read all the stories in the series
The Borbas joined more than 475,000 Brazilian immigrants living in the Miami metro area, according to the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2021.
A 2022 U.S. Census Bureau survey reported only 105,000 Brazilian immigrants living in Florida
Official counts often miss undocumented immigrants
he was speaking to us and making everything fall into place,” Maikon said
“We wanted to come to a place where we felt like God could use us.”
Maikon Borba offers communion to the Southeast Florida Church of Christ congregation
The need for their ministry arose from a simple issue: Americans tend to think of missions outside of the U.S
rather than to specific groups or cultures already within its borders
“Less people are interested in doing mission work,” Maikon said
“And then people don’t even think about domestic missions much
they always think about going to a foreign country — Africa
While they work in ministry legally on a religious visa
the Southeast Florida church serves all who seek help
“We talk a lot about how we need to be careful and not promote illegal stuff,” said Junior Lira
who preaches in Portuguese for the congregation
immigrated from Brazil to serve alongside the Borbas
the Liras never planned on coming to the U.S
Junior Lira followed in the footsteps of his father
The son had an established ministry in Brasília
shares the Gospel with a Brazilian immigrant outside of a Portuguese store
He had served as a domestic missionary for 14 years when his contacts at Great Cities Missions, a Texas-based nonprofit associated with Churches of Christ
“We are here just because God gave us this mission,” Lira said
“God put all the pieces together — the sponsors
But starting a bilingual Portuguese and English congregation in Florida presented a unique challenge
The older generations of Brazilian immigrants embrace an insular mindset
eating at Brazilian restaurants and attending Brazilian clinics
Many never need to learn English once they immigrate because of the well-established Brazilian communities in Florida
first-generation Brazilian Americans prefer English
Pleasing both demographics is hard but necessary
the mission team devised an outreach plan: Expand the leadership to include a third family — ideally
citizens with an interest in youth ministry and immigrant populations
And return to the Borbas’ roots in Brazil by offering Let’s Start Talking English classes to Portuguese-speaking immigrants
American and Hispanic children listen to a Bible story in English at the Springs Church of Christ
which partners with the Southeast Florida Church of Christ in bilingual ministry
Maikon Borba hosts two classes at the church’s rented space between a pawn shop and a pet grooming salon
Enrollment is $40 and intended to encourage students to invest effort and time into the program
The Borbas also teach private sessions and meet with one student remotely via Zoom
“Most people come to us through the English classes
and then we try to connect with them after the English lessons,” Maikon said
“So (we offer) English studies and counseling first
and then as we meet them and become friends with them
they come to us with all these other needs.”
The Southeast church also exposes its congregants to English through visiting young adult groups from the College Church of Christ in Searcy
That congregation is one of its supporting churches
hands out English class flyers outside of Seabra Foods
a supermarket that primarily imports products from Portugal
The trips are a mutually beneficial cross-cultural experience
spent a week with the bilingual congregation on a recent mission trip
“I think especially in America it can be so easy to just assume that everyone has had the opportunities that we’ve had to learn the Gospel,” Nikolai said
“And so coming here highlights that there are a lot of people who live in America and haven’t heard the Gospel
“I’m realizing that there are a lot of pockets in the U.S
where the language barrier is still prominent,” she added
“We need people to minister here as well as going out in other countries.”
where the language barrier is still prominent
We need people to minister here as well as going out in other countries.”
Yet maintaining a steady attendance is difficult
Immigrants tend to work low-paying jobs with long hours
That success can come at the expense of church attendance
Convincing people to give up work — or much-needed rest — to attend church is a challenge
Attendance also fluctuates drastically due to the transient nature of immigrants
The Borbas and Liras face their own immigration challenges as well
— known as R-1s — are issued in 30-month increments and cannot exceed five years for foreign workers
While the Liras are eligible for another two years
Their next step is to apply for permanent residency in the state of Florida
“But the religious visa only lasts for five years
so we can stay here and finish the mission — or at least keep it going.”
Green cards for the couple will cost about $12,000
but the struggle is worth the chance to preach salvation to an unreached populace
both missionary families are sure of one thing: Their work is here

friendship and even delicious pierogi fill the pages of "The Midnight Brigade," Adam Borba’s debut novel
the tome is a memorable tale about a boy trying to find his own voice and the resilient friends he joins forces with to save a beleaguered family business
That the book smacks of big-screen potential should come as no surprise
has steadily maneuvered his way up Hollywood’s creative ziggurat for some time
He co-produced "Pete’s Dragon" (2016) before adding executive producer to his list of credits with "A Wrinkle in Time" (2018) and the highly anticipated "Peter Pan & Wendy," coming in 2022
Borba’s journey from imagination to page is interesting to note
The book was born because of something that didn’t transpire
“I kept looking to do a movie about trolls and went through a lot of the old classic fairy tales
through different countries and mythologies — that kind of thing,” said Borba
who now resides in Los Angeles with his wife and two children
“And I just couldn't find what I was looking for
I had no idea how many bridges that city had — something like 446.”
“It was one of those things where you're staring at those beautiful bridges and you start to wonder
there's gotta be a troll living under one of them,’” he said
Borba wondered “how much fun it would be” to be a kid who discovered a troll living under a bridge and to be able to keep that troll secret to your friends
thinking they might work as an outline for a film
he discovered he’d written very detailed scene work
I knew it wasn’t really a movie outline; I'd started writing a novel,” he said
and I didn't really tell anybody about it — even my wife — until I had finished the draft
Mostly because I didn't know if I had the ability to go all the way with it
Borba’s endeavor introduces readers to young Carl Chesterfield
Then he discovers a flyer about a mysterious monster-seeking group called the Midnight Brigade
Surely that could provide some of the answers he’s seeking
Carl discovers the irritable yet warmhearted creature underneath a magnificent Pittsburgh bridge
Eventually friends Teddy (the son of the school principal) and Bee (the daughter of a Pittsburgh food critic) come along for the inspiring ride
discovering hope and empathy — and something deeper about themselves — along the way
“Being bold is one of the themes of the book,” Borba said
and a lot of times those ‘introverts’ hold things in
Everybody has their own internal monologue — analyses
you're not defending others and you're not speaking up for yourself.”
That nuance works its way through "The Midnight Brigade" to the end
The story is also very 21st-century timely
“Kids have lost a year-plus of their lives at this point (from the pandemic)
and social interaction and finding connections with people are important — that’s a big theme in the book,” Borba said
They're interacting over a screen as opposed to in-person
You could read this story and decide that it takes place today or in 1995
That was a conscious choice on my part because I wanted to keep things timeless and keep the focus on direct relationships for these kids.”
“I feel like I'm a bit of all of my characters,” he said
but I think my heart is in the right place.”
Borba says that growing up in the Coachella Valley and attending Palm Springs High School taught him the importance of trust and friendship
“A lot of the friends I met in Palm Springs — both personal friends and even my parents' friends at this point — have remained the closest in my life
and it was a fun place to grow up as a kid.”
he says he’s committed to always learning more — about the industry and mostly
“I'm now a father of two,” he says
“When I started writing my first book
I can write books and I can still produce movies
I’m committed to pushing myself to get more out of life because I realized I have the bandwidth to do so.”
And his biggest wish for "The Midnight Brigade?"
“I hope it transports people to a wonderful place for the short period of time,” he says
“I want readers to enjoy the ride the story takes them on.”

outlined seven ways educators can help nurture students’ resilience and teach them to thrive in school and life
Education psychologist Michele Borba was conducting a focus group on mental health with 12 students at a middle school in San Diego
asking them questions about their experiences with stress and anxiety
Borba noticed one student kept looking at the table behind him
he told her – they’re missing the “pieces” of the puzzle to understand how to navigate life and it’s causing them enormous stress
“The problem is we’re all being raised to be products and test scores by our parents that we can’t figure out how to do the rest of it and that’s why we’re struggling.”
Borba said during her morning keynote presentation Sunday at the 2023 ASCD Annual Conference
“This generation of kids is like carefully wrapped packages of gifts with missing some pieces inside,” she said
“It’s not that we’re not trying
But we’re also raising our children in a different culture
The kids are the same; they’ve got the same needs but culture always matters
Test scores and grade point averages alone will not help students thrive in the world, Borba said. She outlined skills educators can weave into their instruction that will help boost students’ resilience, academic performance and mental health. The skills come from Borba’s book, Thrivers: The Surprising Reasons Why Some Kids Struggle and Others Shine
Teachers can help nurture student self confidence with practices that establish an environment of care and trust
She gave the example of her childhood teacher
who started each day standing at the door and asking each student if they wanted a handshake or a hug
The simple daily ritual – which the students dubbed “H and H” – built relationships with students and helped them feel seen
“She started the day by creating trust and safety and security.”
Recognizing students’ strengths also helps build confidence
She told about a high-school science teacher who uses colored index cards to help him learn about his students
He has one card for each student and assigns different colors to each class period
filling them out with information he learns about his students – who they are
The exercise has helped him to better understand his students and give them meaningful praise they appreciate
“Confidence – knowing what your strengths are
We thrive more when we have that,” said Borba
Thrivers practice empathy – they focus on “we” not “me,” according to Borba
She said today’s students need help cultivating this trait
referencing data showing a 40% decline in empathy among American teens
to students spending their days “looking down at screens and not up at each other.” What they need are activities that train them how to look up and interact with others
Borba told of a history teacher who does daily “brain breaks” with his students
students pair off with a partner (it could be the same person all day or all week)
sit square to that person and have a 30-second conversation – maybe reviewing the next day’s assignment or discussing what might be on a test
The goal is to help them get comfortable looking at and listening to each other
Activities like this help students develop emotional literacy and concern for others
“The thing we have to remember is that empathy is a verb,” Borba said
Thrivers can think straight and put brakes on impulses
self manage and exercise healthy decision making
Violence is the norm for many students at this school
“You’re looking at a group of kids who text each other in the morning about which streets to avoid so they won’t be shot,” she said
“And by the time they walk into your classroom and sit down do you think they’re gonna be able to tune into your dynamic lessons
The principal and school counselor realized the students needed coping skills
They implemented a schoolwide “Quiet Time” at the beginning of each day
They found the time by shaving a few minutes from every class
teachers dim the lights and turn on soft music
The goal is to help them settle down and get into a mindset for learning
An examination of data – pre- and post-implementation of Quiet Time – revealed that student behavior had improved
Suspensions and absences were down and classroom performance was up
News of the success got out and other neighboring schools implemented the practice
Talk to students about why they’re doing this
Teach them how their brains react to stress and deep breathing
how these two affect executive function and what stress does to different parts of the brain
And then weave it into your daily instruction
Thrivers finish what they start and don’t need gold stars
Weaving one skill into your practice daily will demonstrate this for your students
“That’s what teaches perseverance,” she said
“Now they have an expandable mindset to go ‘Oh
A school in Temecula Valley Unified School District
the principal chooses one strength for the school to focus on
the students in the Thriver Squad meet at lunch to create a video on how to perform that skill
“I walk into every single classroom the first five minutes of the day and they’re practicing the skill,” Borba said
looking at the smartboard…at their peers who are teaching them the scale.”
Students aren’t born with this skill; they must acquire it
“Perseverance is one of those extraordinary superpowers
And that becomes absolutely textbook perfect,” said Borba
Thrivers are open to new experiences and ideas and are willing to take risks to learn and create
She spoke of a group of high school students who formed a book club for her book
They’re reading it and talking to their administrators about the skills they need to learn
‘We just wanted to know why you wrote this for teachers and parents
Another book club includes students in the fifth grade
“They’re reading everything they can about curiosity from Thrivers,” Borba said
She will be holding regular Zoom calls with them
“They learn as much as they can about how to thrive and then they do an assembly for their parents and the assembly for parents is ‘Here’s what you need to teach us’ and the parents will come and give kids voice
They have moral awareness and identity and think along ethical lines
“You’re dealing with a population of students who need to be deeper thinkers,” she said
“You’re dealing with a population of kids who can ask Alexa and Siri for anything
They don’t have to figure out what the answer is – just copy and paste from it
Yale says you’re raising really smart kids but they’re excellent sheep
They’re following along and they’re more risk averse.”
Canard believed that history was among the best ways to learn about character
He wanted to teach his students that they could be changemaker and expose them to people of character
Canard gave his students a project where they had to work in groups to find an example of a changemaker with exemplary character
A group of girls had trouble finding a subject so he directed them to a box that he kept in the classroom – a box where he collected stories of people of character
The girls found a story about Irene Sendler
a Polish nurse who served with an underground resistance group in Warsaw during World War II and helped rescue Jewish children from the Nazis
The girls were enthralled with Sendler’s story
They discovered she was still alive and created a play called “Life in a Jar” to tell her story
They eventually made contact with Sendler and flew to Warsaw with Canard to meet her
The girls’ project is an example of empathy and integrity
“Here’s empathy and integrity and curiosity
Each one of these powers doesn’t work alone
You put them together and they become superpowers,” she said
Thrivers can find the silver lining in circumstances
communicate assertively and have a sense of hope
“Every child and every grown up in the world needs is a ‘We got this and we’ll get it through it’ outlook,” she said
Children who don’t have an optimistic outlook
who can only focus on and talk about the negative run the risk of falling into pessimism
“If we always say nothing but the negative
“It’s one of the things that’s so deadly to our kids because it robs them of hope.”
Borba urged educators to teach students how to push back on negativity
She recommended doing an assignment where students – individually
as a class or as a school – come up with encouraging sayings that become personal mission statements
Have them write down those statements and practice saying that to themselves frequently
This practice of talking back to the negative helps build resilience
It starts when our kids are young and it keeps on going the rest of their lives
