Although she doesn’t live right by the ocean, artist Emily Botelho channels her passion for marine landscapes with frequent trips to explore where soil and sea meet
she photographs the colors and textures that appear on the rocky waterfront: lichen
and small sea creatures all create unique visual patterns
U.K.-based artist then prints her photographs on cotton fabric and embellishes them with long straight stitches

the breathtaking athleticism that the Notre Dame coaching staff calculated would allow one of the nation’s top high school linebackers to evolve into an elite college defensive end didn’t matter anymore
Jordan Botelho so consistently got in his own way as a freshman early enrollee and even more so as a persistent violator of the Irish football team’s COVID-19 protocols when the players reconvened on campus last June
he was put on a plane and sent home to Honolulu
248-pound sophomore-to-be 10 months later is one of Notre Dame’s most convincing spring feel-good stories is his buy-in
"Jordan had a long way to go in maturity and accountability,” Notre Dame defensive line coach Mike Elston said Thursday after ND’s practice No
“The best thing for him was that he was sent home
“He realized that we're here about a holistic development
And this isn’t just about him getting sacks on Saturday
But not to compromise the rest of our group and coach (Brian) Kelly's culture inside the program.”
Elston’s actual official title at Notre Dame this season encompasses 14 words
what the only assistant coach who’s been with Kelly for all 12 springs at ND has done since Kelly’s own introspective coaching reboot four years ago is help build the defensive line into the ND position group that perennially most resembles that of a College Football Playoff team
Through one of the best player development models anywhere
Through a culture that allows the Irish to roll 10-12 players deep across the front
Through uncompromising standards on and off the field
Notre Dame’s 43-6 on-field surge since the 4-8 cratering in 2016 included a return of Elston to coaching the defensive line
One of his first stabs at gauging the cohesiveness and shared trust of a D-line unit that in 2016 was 65th out of 65 Power 5 teams in sacks (3) was to cram all of them
into an escape room (beyond its preferred capacity of 12
as he and the players struggled to follow the series of puzzles and riddles that led to clues on how to escape from the locked room within the one-hour time limit
chemistry became the calling card for that very same group and still is today
Which is why Botelho’s second chance extended to him in August was conditional after tanking his first (team) chemistry test
“It was a reality check,” Elston said of the Honolulu Saint Louis High product’s time away
“He came back and had a few bumps in the road
Then he and I had a really good heart-to-heart.”
with Botelho’s role limited to special teams
more than all but three members of his freshman class
and amassed four tackles and a special teams TD on a blocked punt
a personal story,” Elston said of the midseason meeting
There are plenty of other spring breakthroughs among Elston’s group
which is why there’s so much collective optimism in the face of losing probable NFL Draft picks Ade Ogundeji and Daelin Hayes
Defensive tackle Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa has so taken to an experimental shift to defensive end
he’s become the D-line’s most productive player this spring
There’s so much productive depth among all four positions that midyear freshman enrollees Gabriel Rubio
Devin Aupui and Will Schweitzer can incubate instead of pushing through growing pains
And even with Jacob Lacey out of the mix because of shoulder rehab
the nose guard position has surged in part because of Howard Cross III’s dramatic development
“Howard Cross is just a dynamic accelerator,” Elston said
“He's always in the backfield and he's quick with his hands
He's got good speed and really good agility
So it also appears will junior Vyper end Isaiah Foskey
who is thriving in new defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman’s multiple fronts
Foskey is able to play the big defensive end spot as well as kick inside at times to defensive tackle
which allows him and Botelho to be on the field at the same time in certain situations
Now that Botelho has earned that kind of trust
“He's not on any lists of bad decisions and he's taking care of his business off the field in schoolwork,” Elston said
but definitely the maturity is showing through and I'm super proud of him and I love him for it
“The connection we have (is) because we've gone through the trials and tribulations together
And he's made a lot of growth and I'm excited for him."

hearing opening arguments in the trial of Tavares for the Oct
Botelho’s skeleton was found buried in a backyard on June Street in 2000 after Tavares lead investigators there
by stabbing her to death in 1991 in their Somerset home
Tavares was not charged with killing Botelho until April of 2013
when he was indicted by a Bristol County Grand Jury for her murder
Those charges came after detectives from Fall River went to Washington state to interview Tavares
Tavares is serving a life sentence there after being convicted of the murder of a young couple in that state in November of 2007
Botelho lived across the street from the apartment on June Street where Tavares lived with his mother
Daniel Tavares was a dealer of cocaine,” McCauley said
Botelho and her boyfriend owed Tavares money for cocaine
“What he said was that he had more cocaine
“He was going to front her some cocaine so they could sell it so they could raise money to pay him back.”
Tavares laid out a line of cocaine in the bedroom of his home for Botelho
pulled to the body and stabbed repeatedly,” McCauley said
how she attempted to breathe as blood filled her mouth.”
Tavares dropped Botelho’s body off a second floor porch and buried her under a tree in his backyard
She was not found until Tavares lead police there in 2000
Tavares said he was only a witness to the killing
“His plan was to shave off time from his sentence by using the murder of Gayle Botelho.”
Tavares made more admissions in 2012 to the police
the motive for why he killed Gayle Botelho,” McCauley told the jury
“He ultimately would admit he acted alone.”
Tavares sent a letter to Detective John McDonald
warning him to stop speaking to his neighbors and friends as part of the investigation
“He said he would get amnesia,” McCauley said
But defense lawyer Christopher Belezos asked the jury to judge Tavares by more than his words
Botelho’s remains were found because of Tavares
His information to the police revived the investigation long after it had become a cold case
“He is the one who put his head in the lion’s mouth,” Belezos said
“He was the one who brought this investigation
Belezos added: “All the breaks in this case were brought to the Commonwealth by Daniel Tavares
This can be understood by looking at Tavares life in prison
he would rather be considered a murderer than someone who cooperates with the police
you promised to give a fair shake to a person who killed three other people.”

Japan looked to establish his dominance in the opening exchanges
and he used his powerful left kicks to good effect
Botelho — a WKA European Champion — attempted to charge forward with strikes before sliding out of range
but found it difficult to close the distance and settle into the contest
after taking the first round to assess his opponent’s range and read his timing
the Portuguese striker upped his intensity in the second frame
and then followed up with multi-punch combinations
The momentum truly shifted late in the stanza as he unleashed a sustained flurry of strikes in the pocket to put an exclamation point on an excellent round
Clearly encouraged by his improved performance
the Lisbon native looked to seal the victory in the third and final round
Watanabe briefly derailed his European foe’s momentum in the opening seconds of the frame with a beautiful sweep
Botelho returned to his high-pressure strategy
and got his reward — a huge overhand right dropped the Japanese warrior to the canvas for the first official knockdown of the contest
a brilliant right-left combination stunned Watanabe sufficiently enough to force a standing eight count
Knowing a third count would see him win the contest by TKO
Watanabe gamely survived the remaining seconds to take the match to the scorecards
Following a strong display in rounds two and three
the Portuguese striker deservedly got his hand raised in the center of the cage
The kickboxing victory added another notable win to his professional record
It joins his 17 Muay Thai wins and shows Botelho is equally adept under both rule sets in ONE Super Series

a Circuit Court jury found Makuola Collins guilty of second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder in the fatal shooting of former Castle High School football teammate Joel Botelho outside of Botelho’s parent’s Kaneohe home in the early morning of January 2
He was also found guilty of firearms violations
faces a maximum sentence of life without parole
The jury will return for a hearing on January 5 to decide if Collins should be eligible for parole
The trial before Judge Karen Ahn lasted for nearly eight days
Deputy Prosecutor Wayne Tashima showed the jury
a photo of Botelho’s bloodied knees in an attempt to prove the victim had been forced to kneel before he was shot
and then a photo showing where a bullet entered above the victim’s chest
as an innocent peacemaker who "paid" for attempting to step between a violent and simmering dispute between his younger brother
argued that there are many gaps in the information that leave a reasonable doubt for the jury
and Hayakawa suggested repeatedly that it was Leon Botelho who shot his brother and then hid the evidence
Leon Botelho has been the only person to identify Collins as the man who shot his brother
Hayakawa said there were also inconsistencies in statements made by Leon Botelho and other prosecution witnesses
Tashima said Collins had gathered a group of relatives and friends to go the Botelhos’ home during the early morning hours of Jan
2 after Bubba Botelho had "false-cracked" him at the Club Komo Mai bar in Kaneohe a few hours earlier
When Leon Botelho fired a warning shot into the ground
Collins forced Joel Botelho to kneel and then shot him
Collins took the stand in his trial and denied shooting at the Botelhos
He testified that he had gone to the Botelhos’ home to urge his friend Joel to control his younger brother and said as he and several others were walking on a driveway to the Botelho home in the early morning darkness
Joel Botelho was living on Hawaii island but was in Kaneohe on the night of his death to celebrate his 27th birthday with his family
Collins and Joel Botelho both played on the Castle High School football team on which Botelho was a star quarterback
During the trial and the reading of the verdict
family and friends of Collins and Botelho sat across the aisle from each other in the courtroom
"We just wanted our sons Joel and Leon to be vindicated as they were protecting us that night," Nonohe Botelho said after the verdict
She said it’s been an emotional case for her and her family
the community and her son’s friends and teammates
"We’re just very relieved and just very thankful to the jury that they made the right decision in this case," she said.

“I went 10 minutes without breathing
back when the Democratic presidential candidate race was something that mattered
the WSL held its first tow-only big wave event at Nazaré
By most accounts it was a fabulous day of competition
and so forth. But just as the event was coming to a close
there was an incident that would turn the whole experience sour
After riding his final wave of the day to completion
Portuguese competitor Alex Botelho was picked up by his partner
it’s better if you just watch.
Alex Botelho was knocked unconscious by his impact with the ski
Below is Alex’s official account of what happened that day and how he’s been doing since.
Can you tell me a little bit about the competition
Like what happened up until the point of the incident? Alex Botelho: Well
The whole contest was pretty nice and everybody was respecting each other
but it was just a good time with my partner Hugo [Vau].
It was really just one of those moments where you’re like
“Let’s catch one more wave!” you know
And when we were going back out after that wave
I didn’t watch the event live—all I saw was kind of the stuff that ended up Instagram afterward
So what happened on the wave and on the pickup? Okay
Hugo told me into the wave and I rode out clean
and there was another wave breaking on the same path as the one I’d just ridden
Nazaré sometimes has these crisscross waves
kind of like it does at Blacks in La Jolla
So we’re trying to get out of the way of the primary wave
but there’s this side-wedge coming right for us—there was nowhere Hugo could go at all
I remember seeing the the whitewash coming straight toward us
there was the actual full-size wave that was breaking in the inside
This is going to be rough.’ Then we hit the whitewash and the ski just completely projected into the air—‘cause at the same time we hit it
both waves hit each other and just exploded us into the air
especially because it’s like a 300—it’s a huge machine
you must’ve actually been pretty conscious of what was going on…I was always like
We’re gonna land right now.’ I wasn’t expecting to be in the air that long
I didn’t have a visual reference of how high we were because I was laying down on the back of the sled and there’s water flying up all over the place
I want to be able to grab the ski in case Hugo falls off.’ And that was my thought
if I had known I was flying that high up in the air
I should have completely let go of the sled because of
So then you came down onto the sled and what happened
the right side of my thoracic. That’s how I perforated my lung
And I remember feeling like I was going to blackout
it wasn’t that instant blackout where you don’t remember anything
I remember landing and still holding onto the ski and just thinking
I’m going out,’ and that’s the last thing I remember.
where there’s a second wave that rolls your unconscious body toward the shore
watching that back after the fact?It was like a really slow puzzle
trying to put everything together and process everything
I had to watch everything a few times and hear different stories to put it together
The first thing I remember was just hearing voices of people around me
And then I opened up my eyes and they were
as they were lifting me up and putting me into the ambulance and the first person I saw was my girlfriend Celeste
I remember having this vague awareness of what happened
I’m—you’re being taken care of and looking after.’ And that was really comforting actually
and were you in a critical condition or pretty stable at that point?I was still in a pretty critical condition
I was just throwing up water and trying to breathe
really shallow breaths and I would throw up water immediately after.
I remember at first I had no breathing machines in my lung
But then after later on was when things started to get worse—which I guess now I’ve learned that that’s a normal thing when you have a situation like this happen
That night I was totally unable to breathe by myself
They had to manually supply air to my pleura
but you have a little air chamber around your lung that has negative pressure and makes your lung compress after you inhale
So they had to intubate me to put a breathing machine in my
And for some reason they have to connect those tubes in your chest while you’re conscious
Then they put me out and connected the tubes down my throat until my breathing normalized
And that’s why I was in the ICU for a week
What was the process like while you were there?Well
one of the first things was doing a brain scan
because I basically had 10 minutes without breathing
It took them six minutes to get me out of the water
and then it was another four minutes before I restarted breathing on the beach
I had a really long time without oxygen.
I was fortunate enough to not have any brain damage
The rest of my time in the ICU is kind of blurry because I was on morphine
it being hard to keep track of time or what day it was
I also wasn’t eating because I had the tube and the whole machine in my mouth.
I felt like my day was revolving around getting visited by my girlfriend and my mom.
I guess the one good thing is that you were at home when this happened
It was easy or for my family to come and be there with me
The hospital is like four hours away from where I live
but it was nice because… if you’re familiar with the language
So it definitely was a positive side of it
and the people in the hospital took such good care of me.
Has all of this been covered by the WSL’s insurance
everything that happened in the hospital was covered by the WSL insurance
you said you went 10 minutes without breathing…how?Yeah
I only found this out after I came out of intensive care
‘cause then I was in the normal hospital for another eight days getting treated
and the doctor that was accompanying came and asked
‘Do you mind if we use your case for a clinical study?’ And I said
What’s the study?’ Then she showed me the report
which said I went 10 minutes without oxygen
So I don’t know what kind of angel is next to me or what allowed me to go that long without breathing.
I guess it also goes to shows the psychological side of it
like how much more our body can take than what we’re mentally willing to allow.
So how long have you been home for and how are you feeling? I’ve been home for just about a month now
I feel like I can finally do my normal chores without feeling any consequences
you know—getting up to walk to the kitchen or
or getting dressed—I would have to take breaks in between everything because my lungs are weak
The whole recovery basically about healing my lungs
because both of them were filled with water
so they need time to recover and regain the ability to oxygenate the body
But in the last week I’m feeling much better
Just before this whole situation with the of the Coronavirus started
I was just starting my first few sessions of physiotherapy and getting that going
I had to put that on hold and stay at home now
does it seem like you will be able to make a full recovery?Yeah
The doctor said I would have a full recovery
just from how my body is feeling at this moment
I still can’t believe you didn’t have any brain damage
like not even a concussion.I also can’t believe in
When you watch the video of the second wave
it looked like I went over the falls with the ski
but do you feel any differently now about big wave surfing
Is it something you still want to pursue once you’re healed? A lot of people that I’ve seen around my hometown
you should never go again,’ or ‘Aren’t you traumatized by the experience?’
I haven’t been in the ocean since the accident
I keep going back to the fact that it was ultimately the waves that brought me back to shore
Nobody picked me up and brought me to shore
and I’m deeply thankful for everyone who ditched their skis trying to get me
but it’s just so hard out there with the crisscross waves to pick someone up.
the people grabbed me and I was assigned a medical team—five stars
But between the accident and arriving to shore
like I have a stronger relationship with the ocean
Because it could’ve dragged me out to sea
There’s so many rips out there that pull you around
The ocean could’ve easily pushed me in the other direction
and that gives me a good feeling about going out there again
when do you think you will be able to get back in the water—at least to surf small waves?I think if I was doing physiotherapy
I probably could be getting back into the water pretty soon
maybe a month I could have enough lung capacity to get into the water.
but I went to the beach one day with my girlfriend before this whole coronavirus lockdown
and I was just kinda holding my breath as she was duck-diving each little wave
and I couldn’t hold my breath for the duration of a single duck-dive
I realized that I’d probably drown out there on a two-foot day in my current situation
looking back at that versus how I’m feeling now
I think in a few weeks up to a month I could probably get back in the water
and we look forward to seeing you back out there and really just getting back to full health
Is there anything else that we didn’t cover?I just want to say thank you to everyone
to everybody who sent messages and showed me support and good energy because it really was helpful
and it gave me a lot of strength—from people as close as my family to people that I’ve never met.
