Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has endorsed the addition of 18 new sites from around the world to its network of outstanding Geoparks
showcasing some of the most beautiful sites of natural beauty around the globe
The UNESCO Global Geopark designation was created in 2015
and recognizes “geological heritage of international significance”
Geoparks serve local communities by combining the conservation with public outreach and a sustainable approach to development
The 18 new designations brings the total up to 195 Geoparks
covering a total surface area of 486,709 km2
equivalent to twice the size of the United Kingdom
Two UNESCO Member States are joining the network for the first time: New Zealand and the Philippines
For the Guarani, an indigenous people in Brazil, this geopark is “the place where the jungle ends”
located in Rio Grande do Sul State in southernmost Brazil
which consists of mining sulfide metals and marble
has been vital for the region’s economic development
This geopark is located in the south of Brazil between the Pampa and Atlantic Forest biomes
Its name is a reference to the period when Italians colonised the central part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul
traces of indigenous and settlements of the quilombolas (formerly enslaved people of African descent)
The geopark is also rich in fossils of animal and plant life
This gem is located in the Banyuwangi and Bondowoso Regencies in East Java Province. Its location between the strait and the sea has made it a crossroads for human migration and commerce. Ijen is one of the most active volcanoes in the Ijen caldera system
high concentrations of sulfur rise from the active crater before igniting as they encounter the oxygen-rich atmosphere; as the gas burns
it forms an electric blue flame which is unique
This geopark is located along the southern arm of the island of Sulawesi in the Maros and Pangkep Regencies
The local population is primarily composed of the indigenous peoples of Bugis and Makassarese
This archipelago lies in the Coral Triangle and serves as a centre for the conservation of coral reef ecosystems
The area is more than 100 million years old
This geopark is home to the unique fossils of “Jambi flora”
which are the only exposed fossilized plants of their kind in the world today
These are located in the central part of Sumatra Island in Indonesia
The name ‘Jambi flora’ refers to fossilized plants found as part of a rock formation dating from the Early Permian era (296 million years old)
which reproduce via seed dispersal instead of through spores
This geopark’s territory includes four main islands and is special for having the oldest exposed rock in the country
which is almost one-tenth as old as Earth itself
drawn by the beauty of the underwater caves and the extraordinary marine mega-biodiversity
they can observe rock art produced by prehistoric humans who lived in the area several thousand years ago
The Aras River marks the northern limit of this geopark located in northwestern Iran at the southern end of the Lesser Caucasus Mountain range
This mountain range acts as a natural barrier
as well as rich geodiversity and biodiversity; it also links different cultures on the northern and southern sides of the mountain chain
Many thinkers have referred to the 22,771 km2 of desert in northwest South Khorasan Province where this geopark is located as “the geological paradise of Iran”
This is because one can follow the evolution of the planet from the earliest part of the Earth’s history 4.6 billion years ago (the Precambrian) to the Early Cretaceous about 145 million years ago without the slightest interruption
The geopark is home to the Naybandan Wildlife Refuge
the largest in Iran, which covers an area of 1.5 million hectares and is the most important habitat of the Asian cheetah.
Located in central Japan, where it follows the Tedori River from Mount Hakusan down to the sea, the Hakusan Tedorigawa Geopark records approximately 300 million years of history
It contains rocks that were formed by the collision of continents
It also has strata containing fossils of dinosaurs which accumulated in rivers and lakes on land at a time when Japan was attached to the Eurasian continent
Mount Kinabalu dominates this geopark in the State of Sabah at the northern end of the island of Borneo. The highest mountain lying between the Himalayas and New Guinea, Mount Kinabalu has been attracting explorers for over a century
the geopark is home to many endemic plants and animals
including 90 orchid species that exist only on Mount Kinabalu
and the crimson-headed partridge bird not found anywhere else on Earth.
New Zealand’s first UNESCO Global Geopark lies on the east coast of the South Island
rivers and tides of this geopark have enormous cultural significance for the local indigenous people
The geopark offers exceptional insights into the history of the Earth’s eighth continent
The geopark provides evidence of the formation of Zealandia
which broke away from the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana around 80 million years ago
The landscapes in this geopark range from glacier-covered alpine mountains to archipelagos with thousands of islands situated on the strand-flat along the coast
The geological landscape displays textbook examples of glacial erosion that occurred during 40 ice ages
The Hardangerfjord Fault separates a billion years of geological evolution
The Philippines’ first UNESCO Global Geopark, Bohol Island
The island’s geological identity has been pieced together over 150 million years
as periods of tectonic turbulence have raised the island from the ocean depths
The geopark abounds in karstic geosites such as caves
including the famous cone-shaped Chocolate Hills in the centre of the geopark
This geopark tells 2.5 billion years of well-exposed geological history in the western part of the country. The vast tidal flats dotted with volcanoes and islands allow us to travel through time to piece together elements of the Earth’s history. Jeonbuk West Coast UNESCO Global Geopark has already been recognized by UNESCO as a natural and cultural World Heritage property and as a biosphere reserve
Take a journey into the interior of our planet by discovering rocks that emerged from the depths of the Earth almost 400 million years ago in what is now Cabo Ortegal UNESCO Global Geopark
This geopark provides some of the most complete evidence in Europe of the collision that caused Pangea
Most of the rocks in this geopark were brought to the surface by the collision of two continents
which would eventually join the supercontinent Pangaea about 350 million years ago
This geopark is mostly located in the LamTakhong river basin on the southwestern margin of the Khorat Plateau in Nakhon Ratchasima Province in northeast Thailand
The unique geological feature of the region is the diversity and abundance of fossils ranging in age from 16 million to 10,000 years
A large range of dinosaurs and other animal fossils like ancient elephants have been found in Mueang District
This geopark tells the tale of how two oceans evolved over 400 million years of geological history
It charts the closure of the Iapetus Ocean and the birth of the North Atlantic Ocean
which generated large amounts of molten rock (or magma) both within the Earth’s crust and on the surface
The geopark is located in the southeast of Northern Ireland
adjacent to the border with the Republic of Ireland

the world's largest food and beverage company
to improve the productivity of pallet loading in its chocolate manufacturing facilities in Brazil by 53 percent
using a new ABB palletizing robot solution
While the company currently uses ABB Robotics palletizing solutions
the latest requirement was for a more compact cell that could fit into a smaller area and easily be replicated at other sites
An important requirement was for the robot to safely interact with employees
who occasionally need to enter the palletizing area to speed up pallet changes
co-developed by ABB and Nestlé’s engineering team
features an ABB IRB 660 robot with a suction gripper head to move boxes from the end of the production line to the pallet
stacking them accurately to ensure a balanced load
while SafeMove technology enables safe intermittent collaboration between the robot and production line workers
“Food and beverage manufacturers like Nestlé increasingly need more flexibility on their production lines to enable them to adapt to changing consumer tastes and demands
allowing their employees to collaborate intermittently with robots in their production centers
they require higher levels of productivity and efficiency while maintaining the highest levels of product quality,” said Sami Atiya
President of ABB Robotics & Discrete Automation
“Collaborative robot technologies like SafeMove help us deliver on all of these requirements
and by removing the need for extensive fencing
enable us to bring automation to smaller spaces
detects movement and restricts a robot’s speed
motion and position when a person comes near
This allows large industrial robots to work safely and reliably alongside people
the use of SafeMove instead of fences resulted in an approximately 30 to 40 percent smaller footprint compared to previous ABB cells at the Nestlé site
The new installation has been so successful that it has now been installed in three other Nestlé factories in Brazil
with 13 palletizing cells already in operation and further installations and commissioning underway
Financial details of the contract were not disclosed
it has been possible to develop solutions that make our manufacturing process more agile and efficient
ensuring that our products continue to have the same high level of quality and excellence that make the Nestlé brand successful.”
To demonstrate to the customer how the finished cell would work before installation
ABB used its RobotStudio® software to simulate the complete solution in a virtual environment
including showing the cycle time for the robot’s operations
This ensured a shorter implementation time and avoided any failures that might occur in the start-up process
Nestlé in Brazil supplies a range of confectionery to South and Central America and Canada and the company’s Caçapava site is the largest Nestlé Kit Kat factory in the Americas

Missionary Bells of Caçapava do Sul.Photos: Edison Hüttner
The professor says that the bells were disputed in the Battle of San Carlos, at the time a Jesuit province of Paraguay, and were the object of covetousness of the Brazilian Empire, under the expectation that they would have gold and silver in their compositions. Research carried out in Central Laboratory of Microscopy and Microanalysis from PUCRS revealed
One of the bells measures 70cm x 70cm and has two dates printed in Roman numerals: 1714 and 1715
it says that it belongs to the people of San Carlos
its foundry location: the Jesuit reduction of La Santísima Trinidad do Paraná
listed by UNESCO in 1993 as a World Heritage Site and currently belonging to Paraguay
has writing in Spanish and also prints the name of its foundry
Hüttner's analysis also identified that the two objects have similarities with other missionary bells
such as the printed typography and symbols of crosses formed by small diamonds
represent the union of the history of the three countries
Hüttner's research and the identification of the missionary objects impact news about the history of the missions in South America
but the local history of Caçapava do Sul itself preserved them
“This discovery is also important for the population and its identification with the history of the city.” He concludes by reflecting that the bells predate the creation of the Nossa Senhora da Assunção Parish itself
the missionary bells were blessed in a ceremony open to the city's population and their godparents were also chosen
An exhibition about the research findings was also inaugurated on the occasion
Hüttner intends to bring the study to the attention of representatives from Argentina and Paraguay
strengthening relations with the countries through their stories

Aguia Resources (ASX:AGR) has signed a 10-year agreement to lease Dagoberto Barcelos’ existing fertiliser plant in Caçapava do Sul
The company intends to treat Pampafos ore through the facility which is located 110km from Aguia’s operated Tres Estradas Phosphate Mine site.
Aguia will pay $1.4 million in six separate payments
with the first payment of $34,000 due eight days after signing
This payment will be made to Dagoberto to reimburse the company for planned capital works for the site and to offset costs associated with ceasing operations through the plant.
a monthly lease fee of $43,00 is payable for the processing facility from 1 August 2025.
Aguia notes the current processing facility can treat 100,000 tonnes per year of phosphate over an eight-year period
second drying unit and minor upgrades to the system could increase annual production up to 300,000 tonnes per year.
The $49 million market capitalisation company anticipates processing the first ore by Q3 2025 and is currently fast-tracking exploration and development of two wholly owned deposits located within 9km of the plant.
Executive Chairman Warwick Grigor says the agreement is a major step forward for the company.
“Depending upon the speed of market penetration
Aguia will look to expand production at the plant as early as the start of 2026,” Grigor says
“With Brazil largely dependent on phosphate imports
we are confident of carving out a meaningful market position in southern Brazil
the country’s pre-eminent agricultural region.
“We look forward to bringing on a second meaningful revenue stream this year
adding to our goal processing operation at the high-grade Santa Barbara Project in Colombia which is advancing very favourably.”
The company notes it is continuing negotiations with another processing facility in the Caçapava do Sul region for an expanded production profile from its wholly owned phosphate projects.
Aguia Resources is a multi-commodity company with pre-production phosphate projects located in Brazil and gold projects in Colombia.
