Brazil — Using the selfie camera on her phone as a mirror Penha Góes Figueiredo Yanomami applies red paint on her face It’s a tradition inherited from her people the Indigenous Yanomami of the Amazon; the paint is called urucum in the Tupi language and comes from the seeds of the achiote tree (Bixa orellana) It’s usually used on festive days in her village is painting her face while sitting in a hammock at the Yanomami support house in São Gabriel da Cachoeira a municipality in the northwest of Brazil’s Amazonas state this town of 46,000 inhabitants is known as Brazil’s most Indigenous municipality Life in an urban setting hasn’t distanced Penha Yanomami from her people’s traditions and the urucum on her skin reaffirms the ancestral habits in the Yanomami Indigenous Reserve about 140 kilometers (90 miles) northeast of São Gabriel da Cachoeira Penha Yanomami works today as a health agent for the Indigenous health board that covers the Upper Rio Negro region She has lived in São Gabriel da Cachoeira for a year and a half now since it’s the closest urban center to the community she serves and in her spare time she visits the support house reserved for the Yanomami “I’m not [here] because I want to be I came to work for the people who need me as an interpreter in the town,” she says Penha Yanomami studied Portuguese in school and she helps Indigenous people to deal with non-Indigenous issues in the municipality many Indigenous people live between the urban environment and the Indigenous communities While some have already settled permanently in the municipality many still maintain a home in the villages São Gabriel da Cachoeira’s population was 46,303 in 2020 according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) IBGE has not released specific numbers of Indigenous people but local estimates point to approximately 90% of the municipality’s population published in 2010 (the next census is expected in 2022) 11,000 Indigenous people live in São Gabriel da Cachoeira’s urban areas (58% of total residents in urban areas) In this municipality that spans nearly 110,000 square kilometers (42,500 square miles) — an area the size of Cuba — Indigenous people from 32 ethnic groups live together Many of them are unknown in the rest of the country The chart below only shows 23 ethnic groups because IBGE did not disclose the number of Indigenous peoples of the nine other ethnic groups The Federation of Indigenous Organizations of Rio Negro (FOIRN) works with the number of 23 ethnic groups But the fact that the municipality has an Indigenous majority hasn’t always translated into a greater appreciation for ancestral cultures In contrast to the cultural and ethnic diversity there are frequent reports of Indigenous peoples being discriminated against Penha Yanomami speaks with sadness of the ill-treatment often received by her people This includes not only discrimination against Indigenous people in local commerce but also in public institutions she says she has never personally suffered from prejudice: “I don’t even know what prejudice is an Indigenous anthropologist of the Baniwa people and doctoral student at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) says the experience of Indigenous peoples in São Gabriel da Cachoeira’s urban environment is tied to the hierarchical structure of the ethnic groups themselves in addition to historical grievances within Indigenous cultures themselves and the friction that arises when people migrate here from other regions and especially after Brazil’s new Constitution was issued in 1988 a movement to value local culture has grown This movement seeks to reinforce Indigenous self-esteem and lead to the self-identification of a greater number of Indigenous peoples “You carry your experience and share it in a world that is not yours I always say: having your world and having Western knowledge means that you have two worlds in your hand to grow together.” on the outskirts of São Gabriel da Cachoeira The experience led her to join an Indigenous movement that advocates for the appreciation of traditional customs Rising to a leadership role at a young age Adelina coordinated the youth department at FOIRN until December 2020 “The cultural shock was quite impactful for me,” she says “I felt this big prejudice at school: ‘Look at that Indigenous woman she doesn’t know how to speak.’ Sometimes I wanted to speak correctly and ended up making more mistakes São Gabriel is the most Indigenous town [in Brazil] Adelina Desana says she has managed to reconcile urban life with some of her Indigenous customs also tries to reconcile the two different worlds that he straddles he studies at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and lived in student housing in the city of Campinas He has returned to São Gabriel da Cachoeira for what he hopes will be a temporary break He refutes the common perception that a person is no longer Indigenous because they live in the city “We sometimes discuss this at the university Since I already know how to use my computer he says he brings manioc flour in his suitcase and he has even caught tanajura ants in the student housing to fry and eat You have to pick up the ant head so as not to be bitten and put it in the little pot to cook,” says Valdeson Baré the first to map out the Indigenous presence across the whole of Brazil revealed remarkable Indigenous diversity: 305 ethnic groups and 274 languages Anthropologist Franci Baniwa says the educational system is key in the process of expanding knowledge about Indigenous culture and its appreciation “The study of history in the country should include Indigenous peoples: how many ethnic groups which Indigenous territories there are,” she says an Indigenous community in São Gabriel da Cachoeira Franci Baniwa today lives in Rio de Janeiro “There is a profound lack of knowledge about the region of São Gabriel It’s not because I’m Indigenous that I sleep on top of a banana tree or wear banana-leaf clothes We wear clothes and have the traditional apparel for ceremonies I also write when I’m there,” Franci Baniwa says She demands improvement of infrastructure in the villages and support for young Indigenous who venture out of their communities “Many Indigenous people continue to leave their communities to study and work but they do not always find the right conditions They end up exposed to problems such as alcoholism and early pregnancy,” Franci Baniwa says with 40 million reais ($7.8 million) in funds promised to be released but said the works will only start when the villages are reopened after the pandemic One of the main Indigenous beliefs of the region where São Gabriel da Cachoeira was founded tells of a large snake climbing the headwaters of the Rio Negro to create humanity with the various ethnic groups settling in certain points that are considered sacred: rocks While the cultural and historical diversity of São Gabriel da Cachoeira is manifested today in its great ethnic diversity the lack of knowledge of the local culture ends up triggering prejudice from immigrants from other regions of the country “I believe the biggest prejudice comes from outsiders the landscape full of sacred places with a story behind them.” The region’s history is quite complex and involves a series of violent episodes that boosted Indigenous migratory movements The first contacts with non-Indigenous peoples took place in the 17th century mostly when Portuguese colonizers hunted for fugitive slaves This is detailed in the map book Indigenous Peoples of the Upper and Middle Rio Negro jointly edited by the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA) a nonprofit advocating for the environment and Indigenous rights military forces established a presence in the region by building a fort starting the construction of the village that would later be called São Gabriel da Cachoeira Economic cycles and migratory movements that exploited and impacted the Indigenous way of life have defined the region That was the case with the so-called rubber cycle exploiting Indigenous and riverine community labor to produce rubber from Amazonian trees Catholic missionaries also reinforced the colonizing presence in the region “They banned the use of the [native] language it was a period of great cultural loss,” Franci Baniwa says Modern-day São Gabriel da Cachoeira faces a series of social problems with only 4% of the town’s sewage system considered adequate for Indigenous people living in its urban areas (See the details in the accompanying map.) Illegal mining on Indigenous reserves also exerts strong pressure on the municipality where there are also high incidence rates of infectious diseases such as dengue and malaria the municipality’s cultural diversity resists and stands out Walking through the city’s commercial center it’s not unusual to find Yanomami families with the mother carrying the children in fabric slings It’s also common to hear people speaking Indigenous languages on the streets the municipality is the only one in the country that has four other official languages: Baniwa Unicamp holds an Indigenous entrance exam to the university bringing the tests to the municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira where it maintains a teaching extension that trains Indigenous health professionals The headquarters of the Federal Institute of Amazonas (IFAM) in São Gabriel da Cachoeira carries out its selection process with tests in the three official Indigenous languages changed the way in which these entrance exams are applied The Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) also maintains a teaching extension course in the region to train Indigenous educators The course acknowledges the demand from schools for educators and school material that take into account Indigenous cultures Visitors to São Gabriel da Cachoeira are guaranteed a unique experience from the very start The municipality is only accessible by plane or boat with the green carpet of the Amazon forest the ground rises as mountains and hills emerge Rounding out the landscape are the beaches and rip tides of the Rio Negro The beauty of the landscape contrasts with the precarious infrastructure: there are several unfinished buildings The municipality is surrounded by villages some hard to access and others located very close to the urban perimeter there are kiosks and dance clubs that play the local musical genre called forró along with one of the nearest Indigenous communities Entry into Indigenous territories is restricted and requires authorization from Funai The beach is often frequented by Indigenous people on their small motorboats carrying their families and also goods for sale The most recent figures showed that 15,502 Indigenous people in the city don’t have a monthly income Complementary data from IBGE’s 2010 census show that 770 Indigenous people are employed as civil servants or military personnel a far smaller number proportionally than the 810 white and brown people working in the civil service or armed forces The natural beauty on the banks of the Rio Negro and the young people driving around with loud music blaring all live side by side Add to that the military trucks on the streets The military has a strong presence here because the municipality borders two neighboring countries: Colombia and Venezuela The municipal market can also provide experiences that are often considered unique a sort of crepe made with flour from another type of cassava Market vendors also serve up a traditional Rio Negro dish of fish broth with tucupi and pepper there’s the Feira dos Tuyuka (Tuyuka street market) another São Gabriel da Cachoeira tradition with its cultural richness and its contrasts It’s possible to watch a performance of a traditional dance Cariçu; drink an Indigenous fermented drink caxiri; and eat traditional dishes such as quinhampira and game meat These traditional customs coexist with other cultures to the sound of regional or even Colombian rhythms a postdoctoral researcher in social anthropology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) “it is key to understand that there is no opposition of experiences for Indigenous people.” there is no opposition between village and city There is no opposition between rural and urban and they live their lives in the conditions that life offers There are some places that will offer a better living condition for them to gather together conditions are quite adverse,” says Pereira who runs the university’s Social Movements Memory Program is one of the Indigenous people in charge of the Tuyuka Ethnic Indigenous Association–Residents of São Gabriel da Cachoeira also in the municipality of São Gabriel da hates the idea of inflicting pain on her opponents and finds it difficult to shut off her empathy on fight week She found it a little easier to do both, however, after her UFC 297 opponent, Priscila Cachoeira came in well over the 125-pound weight limit for the fight You’re not taking this from me.’ And so I gave a little bit extra.” By the time the fight was called off in the third round Jasudavicius had landed 326 strikes to Cachoeira’s 26 There was so much blood coming from Cachoeira’s face scored the second round 10-7 for Jasudavicius indicating the fight could have been stopped in the middle frame “I did try to finish her,” Jasudavicius said and I just have to keep going through this process until its finalized.” Until she stepped into the octagon with Cachoeira Jasudavicius wasn’t convinced she’d get to finish her work When UFC matchmaker Mick Maynard’s name showed up on her caller ID prior to weigh-ins Jasudavicius put the phone down so her coaches could listen A dream hometown fight – she resides about an hour from the event’s host One of her teammates poked fun at a single tear that fell from her eye after the call her team returned to propose a 130-pound catchweight fight to find the UFC’s nutritionist and “just start eating.” Then they proposed a 132-pound catchweight she was getting more an more agitated and took a walk to clear her head Ambling around the hallways of the host hotel she wound up running into Cachoeira and her coach please,” Jasudavicius said of her response to seeing the Brazilian fighter and her coach was saying she’s having a tough weight cut the concern was that Cachoeira was having so many problems cutting weight So they proposed a bantamweight bout – a full weight class above the fight Jasudavicius signed for “[My coach] Chris comes up and tells me we’re gonna do the fight at 135 because we’re worried if we make the fight 132 and she still misses the weight then the commission’s gonna call it off completely sure.’ I knew I was fighting regardless of whatever weight it was.” drinking water before she stepped on the scale and I like enjoying Christmas with my family and to celebrate New Year’s and spend time with my friends and family there’s a little piece of me that goes into this fire It’s a little bit of fuel every time I don’t get to have that treat when I would have liked to a little bit of fuel if I can’t put as much butter on my potato as I like to I just felt like my whole body had just like poison inside she took her coaches’ advice and harnessed it for her performance “It’s very challenging on fight week to turn off emotion and not see her as a person anymore,” she said “Seeing blood come out of her when I punch her and I hate that in martial arts there’s like a winner and a loser and I hate that she has to feel the pain of loss and the physical pain But I understand that’s like the by-product of being in this sport because I could be that person on the bottom taking that.” She is back on the right side of the resume and she picked up 30 percent of Cachoeira’s fight purse for the weight miss But this trip to the octagon didn’t come without a toll Rio Negro is experiencing historic drought and São Gabriel da Cachoeira is at risk of blackout telegram Join our Telegram channel! telegram the day the Rio Negro reached its lowest level in 120 years of measurement in Manaus part of the residents of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM) woke up without electricity And the dry season is just beginning in the region São Gabriel da Cachoeira is the third most indigenous city in the country and energy rationing is already affecting essential services for the population a poster in front of the Basic Health Unit (UBS) in the Praia neighborhood informed about the change in opening hours due to rationing Schools had to change their schedules due to lack of energy supply and excessive heat The city is at risk of being left without energy supply authorities met at the city forum to discuss the issue It was reported that the city has fuel for another 4 days The ferry with fuel is only scheduled to arrive on the 23rd the situation may normalize for a few days however the scenario of uncertainty regarding fuel supplies continues as the dry period lasts until the beginning of 2024 which could worsen navigability conditions São Gabriel is supplied by a thermoelectric plant 44 thousand liters of diesel are used per day to generate 8 megawatts using approximately 25 thousand liters of diesel/day Temporary cuts by region of the city have been intensifying Amazonas Energia explained that VP Flexgen an independent energy producer responsible for generating the input in the municipality reported on Sunday (15) about the difficulty in receiving fuel to supply the thermoelectric plant “VP Flexgen also communicated that it adopted the necessary measures with the fuel supplier but that the worsening of the effects of the drought severely affected operations due to the difficulties in navigation and logistics of transport across the Rio Negro” Residents argue that the company is able to plan to avoid rationing The population of São Gabriel da Cachoeira also faces problems with water supply problems with the river's navigability and high temperatures Indigenous people still report loss of fields hot soil and the feeling of boiling water in the river No one regulates what will happen anymore,” said indigenous Cecília da Silva who has been trading on the banks of the Rio Negro since the 1980s at one of the gas stations in Porto Queiroz Galvão it was possible to see several cores (drums) left there by consumers but it was not possible to deliver the product due to a lack of energy With the boat stopped next to the floating station was waiting to refuel and continue the journey to Urubuquara This year looks like it will be even drier There’s still a lot of summer left,” he says he needs to pass through Cachoeira de Ipanoré is not navigable: it is necessary to remove the boat from the water and transport it in a truck along a stretch of road to another part of the river as a ravine appears between the river and the road merchant Joaquim Henrique Uchôa sells ice on his ferry But he is unable to find the product to deliver to customers It maintains a ferry that runs between São Gabriel da Cachoeira and Iauaretê District but it is not known whether it will be able to return The few rains that are hitting the region are not enough to change the river level The data shows that the Rio Negro continues to dry up the level dropped from 602 cm to 508 cm between October 5th and 13th according to a bulletin released on October 16th (check the full bulletin below) the white sand beach extends over the river One of the markers for the drought is the crossing to Ilha da Juíza people were able to cross to the island by passing through the rocks it is almost possible to follow this same path the indigenous people need to drag the boat over a sand channel that has formed in the river in a section that tends to flood during floods In front of her house and her grocery store she and her husband built a suspended structure so they could work even when the river was full But they are having to deal with the drought and the lack of some goods      “There is a shortage of chicken and meat Our supplier is only selling up to two bales of soda In São Gabriel da Cachoeira – which can only be reached by boat or plane – the supply of goods is mainly done by ferry But large vessels are unable to disembark at the Port of Camanaus from where products are transported in trucks to the commercial center The ferries have been parked in a section below the port and small boats are used to fetch supplies pasta and even water have gone up in price Transport and Urban Services (Semob) released a statement asking people to save water and announced that supply may be interrupted due to the drought The report also warns that the problem could affect water taps due to the lowering of the water table in artesian wells many people use the water taps spread across some parts of the municipality Edvaldo de Jesus recorded a video asking for the support of public bodies also recorded images showing the fire advancing in areas of already planted fields reported that due to the high temperatures there is no way to work the fields damaging maniva plantations and pepper trees The Yanomami leader José Mário Góes released a video on Thursday (12) considered sacred and located in the community of Maturacá He reports that lightning struck the mountain and caused the fire which was put out in the early hours of Saturday after rain hit the region It is urgent that water comes to wet the ground Data from the Western Amazon Hydrometeorological Monitoring Bulletin – Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM) indicate that the Negro River is maintaining the descent process in São Gabriel da Cachoeira where the recorded levels are below the range of normality The Rio Negro in Manaus reached a level of 13,59 m on October 16 exceeding the low water level of 2010 (13,63 m) this was considered the most severe drought since measurements began in 1902 in the period from September 12th to October 11th below-average rainfall continues to predominate in the region The cause of the drop in rainfall is the El Niño phenomenon intensified by the impacts of the climate emergency “The El Niño phenomena (warming of surface waters in the Pacific Ocean) and anomalous warming of surface waters in the North Tropical Atlantic continue to act favoring the condition of subsidence (vertical movement of air from top to bottom) over a large part of the region inhibiting or reducing the formation of clouds and consequently a reduction in the volumes of rain observed” The most relevant news for you to form your opinion on the socio-environmental agenda LAST ISSUE Sijara Eubanks has the MMA fighter of assault on three occasions most recently an alleged attack in February 2021 that left Nunes with a serious hand injury that required two surgeries per a police report obtained by MMA Fighting In a written statement to MMA Fighting via her management team “I’ve never committed any physical assault against Marcelle,” she wrote “She would lose control many times during an argument and wanted to hit me Nunes accused Cachoeira of pulling her by the hair throwing her on the ground and kicking her “all over the body” during an incident in mid-2019 when they were living in Rio de Janeiro when she saw blood” coming out of a wound on her head The second alleged incident happened in September 2019 when Nunes claimed the UFC fighter knocked her unconscious with a punch in the mouth Nunes needed medical assistance to avoid losing a tooth Nunes said the third alleged incident happened in February after Cachoeira left Parana Vale Tudo in Rio de Janeiro to join Deiveson Figueiredo’s team in Belem She alleged Cachoeira kicked her in the body during an argument while “highly intoxicated and probably on drugs.” Nunes cut her hand on a glass shelf tearing ligaments and requiring two surgeries The attack left her with “limited hand movements,” according to court documents a city located 2,700 miles away from Belem and asked for a restraining order because she says “her ex-partner is a UFC fighter and her life was in danger because [Cachoeira] used drugs and alcohol.” Nunes said Cachoeira threatened to go after her in Bage because she didn’t accept the end of their relationship Nunes accused Cachoeira of using marijuana She said she tried to leave Belem in multiple occasions but “Pedrita” was always very aggressive toward her I’m afraid of you going there and doing something to me My family and friends urged me to press charges and ask for a restraining order My parents don’t like when I leave the house for any reason I have no peace or security because I don’t know if something will happen to me.” Nunes sent MMA Fighting several photographs she said were taken to document her injuries MMA Fighting could not independently verify the authenticity of the images The UFC did not immediately responded a request for comment Cachoeira said she had ended her relationship with Nunes and denied she used drugs she’s inventing lies and twisting the truth with the intention of tarnishing my image and emotionally affect me “I would also like to add that I’m subject to anti-doping tests regularly by [the United States Anti-Doping Agency] therefore her baseless and false allegation seems to me like an attempt to hurt my career.” Update: Priscila Cachoeira has pressed charges against Marcelle Nunes for defamation according to a copy of a police report filed on Thursday and obtained by MMA Fighting The UFC fighter claims Nunes is “trying to harm” her career “as a UFC fighter and public figure” by “defaming” her on social media and claiming she’s “a drug addict” and was “assaulted constantly” during their relationship the UFC fighter doesn’t rule out filing a lawsuit against Nunes Check out the best photos from Jasmine miss The Lipski and Cachoeira fight will be contested at 135 pounds on Aug The first Brazilian city to recognise native languages as co-official languages in 2002 faces difficulties to implement its language policy and planning more than 10 years later a bill authored by the councillor Domingos Camico Agudelos and approved by the City Council of São Gabriel da Cachoeira recognised for the first time in Brazil three native languages as co-official languages languages spoken by the majority of the city’s inhabitants to the status of co-official language alongside Portuguese according to the Law public and private bodies should serve all citizens in these four languages and the public power should provide official documents in all four languages and support the learning and use of them in schools and in media admitted facing difficulties to implement the Law This paper intends to investigate by means of language policy analysis the causes of the Law’s failure Language planning can be considered a set of ideas rules and practices implemented by some actor not necessarily but usually governmental agencies when it comes to the macro level that aim at an intervention (to promote or interrupt a change for instance) in the language use of one or more communities for some reason (Kaplan & Baldauf The term “language planning” was introduced by Haugen (1959) as “the activity of preparing a normative orthography and dictionary for the guidance of writers and speakers in a nonhomogeneous speech community” (cited in Johnson 2013) proposed to differentiate between the activities included in LPP as corpus planning and status planning as dealing with language form and language function Although many scholars attempted to distinguish these activities it is impossible to do so: “any change in the character of a language is likely to result in a change in the use environment and any change in the use environment is likely to induce a change in the character of the language” (p.28) Cobarrubias (1983) shares the same opinion: “The allocation of language functions responds generally to extralinguistic factors that may often result in or necessitate changes in the corpus of a language in order for it to fulfill a specific function or a number of functions” (p.42) 2013) added a third activity when it comes to language planning and policy (LPP) dealing with the strategy in which a language will be taught in order to boost the number of users and the use of a language Hornberger (2006) interprets acquisition planning as “efforts to influence the allocation of users or the distribution of languages/literacies by means of creating or improving opportunity or incentive to learn them there are also scholars who believe that one more activity can be considered when developing language planning “[t]he term prestige planning could be paraphrased as `planning with regard to elements of evaluation in the ethnic identity of a speech community’” (p.87) The main proposal is to avoid “stereotyping categorisation” (p.90) that could cause discrimination and animosity among the target of LPP by balancing the corpus and status planning activities.  “When trying to change the image of the language by modifying the value structures held by the target population the main aim of language promotion is to nurture confidence by improving its prestige or image and by raising its profile among the target population.” (Shouhui & Baldauf Corpus and status planning are considered productive activities while prestige planning is seen as a receptive activity that can influence the way corpus and status planning activities are carried out and received (Kaplan & Baldauf This is probably the reason why for many scholars prestige is still considered a secondary effect of status planning (Haarmann there are other factors involved when planning a language intervention the target group (the people for whom  LPP is made) the conditions or the context in which  LPP is elaborated (e.g the means or the way the policy will be put into practice (e.g and the expected effects on the behaviours one attempts to influence The relation among some of these elements can determine the type of LPP as classified by Johnson (2013) regarding to origin (top-down or bottom-up) and in law and in practice (de jure or de facto) LPP will be top-down if developed by a governmental agency and bottom-up if developed “by and for the community they are meant to impact” (p.10) It will be explicit if officially documented and implicit if the LPP happens independently of official documents It will be overt if the intention is openly expressed and covert if it includes “hidden agendas” (Shohamy It will be de jure if based on laws and de facto if based on practice LPP has “repercussions on other languages and ethnolinguistic groups” (p.5) and decisions regarding the language selection and reason “reflect power relations among different groups and socio-political and economic interests” (p.6) and agency in explaining how and why things are the way they are” (p.6) Cobarrubias (1983) reached the same conclusion: “Language-status decisions are affected by ideological considerations of powerful groups and counteracting forces” (p.6) Johnson (2013) created an orientation framework based on the models developed by Kloss Wiley and Ruiz to show how the connection “between language and social control” (p.37) works The orientation according to Kloss and Wiley can be towards promotion Promotion-oriented is when the government supports the official use of minority languages by allocating resources Expediency-oriented is when the intention is to promote but not to expand the use of minority languages Tolerance-oriented is when the actors recognise but do not interfere in the use of minority languages Restrictive-oriented is when the use of minority languages is legally prohibited Repression-oriented is when the actor attempts to eradicate minority languages null-oriented is when the actor not even recognises the existence of minority languages (Johnson 2013) defined three orientations in LPP: a language-as-problem orientation The first one occurs when the agent treats the minority language as an obstacle for majority language acquisition The language-as-right occurs when bilingual education is implemented considering the acquisition of the dominant language and the maintenance of the mother tongue of individuals (one-way additive bilingual education) The last one occurs when bilingual education is implemented but for every inhabitant independently if native or not (two-way additive bilingual education) the minority language is considered a problem the minority language is seen as a resource and a right the minority language is considered only a right the way minority language is seen will depend on local LPP (Johnson the Law 145 of the city of São Gabriel da Cachoeira determined Baniwa Nheengatu and Tukano co-official languages in the municipal territory One of the peculiarities of this city is that 95.5% of its 37.896 inhabitants are indigenous where the indigenous auto-declared population represents only 0.4% of the total Interesting to note is that between 1991 and 2000 the number of the population auto-declared indigenous a phenomenon considered atypical by the researchers responsible for the official census the increment had no demographic reasons but it could be explained by the improvement in the public policies offered to indigenous peoples in that period (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística an ethnocentric ideology prevailed in which indigenous people were considered incapable and should “evolve” until they are integrated into society (Fundação Nacional do Índio many indigenous schools were managed by Salesian missionaries on a boarding school basis where Portuguese was mandatory and the use of the children’s mother tongues was prohibited (Iubel The native children were separated from the conviviality of their families and from the contact with their own culture a federal law established by the military government in 1973 was an advance for recognising Brazilian cultural diversity that the literacy of natives must be in their mother tongue and in Portuguese (Presidência da República Federativa do Brasil the Brazilian government kept focusing on integration what represented an ambiguity since diversity was supposed to be protected (Fundação Nacional do Índio “The goal of the Statute was to make indigenous people gradually cease to be indigenous the recipients of this law were (…) owners of temporary rights compatible with their condition and that would last while this condition lasted” (Araújo with more political mobilisation and participation not only as voters but also as candidates (Iubel It is important to stress that it was in the beginning of the 1990's that the international community expanded discussions on the indigenous peoples' rights, as the Earth Summit and the International Conference on Population and Development in 1994 in Cairo (Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean This means that the internal indigenous movement was also benefited with external pressures over the Brazilian government The orientation towards native languages has gone from repressive in which the language was seen as a problem and needed to be eradicated in which the language kept being seen as a problem but the government promoted the language without however increasing the number of speakers right after a decade of social achievements for the Brazilian natives that the City Council of São Gabriel da Cachoeira approved the Law 145 in 2002. This was an innovative step because the “minority” language was not seen as a problem anymore but as a right (promotion-oriented one-way additive), since the State intended to invest in promoting the use of the three co-official languages This is clear when the text informs that the municipality will provide public services in all the co-official languages or that it will encourage and support the learning and use of co-official languages in schools and in media The bill was presented for voting by the former councillor Domingos Camico Agudelos also known as Camico Baniwa (mandate from 2001 to 2004) the leader of the Baniwa indigenous community The project was elaborated by the Institute for Research and Development of Language Policies at the request of the Federation of Indigenous Organizations of Rio Negro (FOIRN Domingos Agudelos was a member of the Administrative Council of FOIRN between 1992 and 1994 and an employee of the Federation between 1995 and 1996 (Luciano Although the Law 145 was officially established by the City Council it can be defined as not only top-down but also bottom-up LPP in its origin because it was produced “by and for the community” (Johnson “[T]here is overlap within and across categories; that is a policy can be both top-down and bottom-up” (Johnson The use of these three co-official languages (Baniwa Nheengatu and Tukano) became explicit and de jure after the Law 145 the LPP can be defined as covert once the problem and the reasons for implementing it are not well identified in the text since the Law is basically a set of actions to be adopted by the municipality if the municipality is now obliged to produce public documents and institutional campaigns in all co-official languages it is because the City Council (and the indigenous community) considers not providing this as a problem We could be tempted to conclude that the only reason for the establishment of this LPP was to allow indigenous people to have access to public power This utterance does not make sense if we think that the Brazilian Federal Constitution of 1988 decrees that fundamental education mandatory for children between 6 and 14 years old and also in the mother tongues in the case of Brazilian natives (Presidência da República Federativa do Brasil because many of them do not have opportunity to practice Portuguese unless when they are at schools they do not develop fluency in the language When for any reason they need to access the public service in the urban area many of them feel insecure or ashamed for not being able to express themselves in another language This means that indeed language ends up being a barrier to access to public services Nheengatu and Tukano languages have thousands of speakers and are perceived as strong languages in the region (Stenzel there is a general tendency to language loss in the urban area “The city represents an environment of greater pressure in favour of the displacement of the indigenous languages by Portuguese the official Brazilian language and the dominant one in spheres of educational institutions live in the urban area and the statistics show a tendency of increasing migration to this region this leads us to believe that the extinction of the native languages is only a matter of time the real reason for this LPP was to encourage youths and children who move to the São Gabriel da Cachoeira’s urban area to keep using their mother tongue Knowing the problem and the reason leads us to identify the activities that this LPP was expected to deal with and then to evaluate if it is an efficient document or not The Law 145 “attempts to modify the environment in which a language is used” (Kaplan & Baldauf p.28) and due to this it can be categorised as status planning the planning intends to encourage and support the learning of the co-official languages what makes it also a case of acquisition planning since the Law 145 deals with the value of the three native languages appointing them as co-official alongside Portuguese and institutes that nobody can be discriminated for using these languages prestige planning is also part of the official rule the Law 145 proved to be a good LPP for apparently respecting all the expected steps in a document like this So why did it not work as it was supposed to and therefore 12 years since the establishment of the Law 145 who was elected deputy-mayor of São Gabriel da Cachoeira in 2012 admitted facing difficulties to implement the rules The main reason for these difficulties is the lack of qualified professionals to write or translate the documents in all three co-official languages and the scarce budget to hire them (Abdala the Law 145 of São Gabriel da Cachoeira failed basically already in the decision making process The policy document did not define the funds to finance the production of documents in all co-official languages nor for the training and hiring of qualified professionals for this work Great part of the amount transferred by the federal government to São Gabriel da Cachoeira is mainly consumed in educational and health programmes and by the public payroll: according to Domingos Camico Agudelos the only income sources in the region come from the public service and the Army which maintain a battalion due to the border with Venezuela and Colombia (D24am This amount is apparently not enough to cover new expenses and with no financial support to implement the LPP The former deputy-mayor of São Gabriel da Cachoeira Domingos Camico Agudelos observed a symbolic effect reached by the Law 145: the three co-official languages (Baniwa Nheengatu and Tukano) are now spoken by indigenous people even in the urban area of the municipality in an interview for the Brazilian public media agency he said: “15-20 years ago this was impossible because people were ashamed of speaking their mother tongue and preferred to speak Portuguese if you spend 15 minutes walking on the streets you will listen to almost all languages spoken here in the municipality” (Abdala we cannot attest that the growth in the use of native languages in the urban area was caused by the Law 145 especially because the public power did nothing to foment this behaviour in a practical way the “effects of any particular planning project (…) are not easy to determine because it is hard to know what would have happened if language planning had not occurred” (p.57) If that is correct for LPP applied in practice for LPP that was not concretely implemented it is even worse The fact is that although it could be considered an advance in terms of affirmative policies - that aims “to increase the representation of minorities in areas (…) from which they have been historically excluded” (Fullinwider the indigenous movement did not stop facing barriers in the ideological field even with the achievements during the 1990's the indigenous interests go against of agribusiness especially with regard to land demarcation and the agribusiness has not only economic but also political power in Brazil 51% of congresspeople elected (263 of them) had association with the agribusiness (Marcel 2014) and because of that they were known as “ruralist” congressional caucus a recent Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (PCI) was created to investigate the process of land demarcation made by the National Indian Foundation (Funai from the acronym in Portuguese) and just approved its report Composed mostly by “ruralist” congresspeople this PCI “does not want to demarcate indigenous lands that are not demarcated yet; it wants to revoke the recent recognised demarcations; it wants to allow “ruralists” to explore indigenous land already demarcated” coordinator of the 6th Coordination and Review Chamber of the Federal Public Ministry (2017 This gives us an idea of such power and how ideology can influence issues like the investment in public policies for indigenous people. Although it is an example with respect to the legislative power this ideology can be seen in other power spheres and levels (local That is why Ricento (2006) alleges that analysing LPP corresponds to analysing ideology Perhaps São Gabriel da Cachoeira’s LPP has been an instrument of demonstration of indigenous power in the region so they could fight for more conquests in the wake of this without effective macro level political support and being so dependent of the federal resources the evidences suggest that the Law 145 became an instrument of delusion of native people with the false perception of power Abdala, V. In addition to the win over Kim, she holds knockout victories over Gina Mazany and Shana Dobson UFC Vegas 59 is headlined by a light heavyweight bout between one-time UFC title challenger Thiago Santos and Jamahal Hill Check out these photos highlighting Priscila Cachoeira's knockout win over Shana Dobson at UFC on ESPN+ 26 from Spark Arena in Auckland Defense took the night off as Priscila Cachoeira won a slugfest with Ji Yeon Kim in an electrifying flyweight battle at UFC Vegas 49 Cachoeira was able to get the job done thanks to her blistering power that had Kim backing up several times during the fight and then closing out the fight with a series of nasty elbows that opened several cuts on the South Korean’s face Cachoeira did enough to get the win with all three judges scoring the fight 29-28 in her favor the flyweights were more than happy to stand and trade with Cachoeira swinging wild shots while Kim was a little more technical with her combinations While it wasn’t the most tactical game plan Cachoeira was definitely throwing with power behind every punch and Kim started to get a little wary to return fire in many of the exchanges Recognizing that her activity was waning a bit Kim got more active as the second round got underway as she started to increase her output while also attempting to put Cachoeira on her backfoot more often Kim began finding a home for a slick left jab and then following that with a hard right behind it that started to cause some swelling on Cachoeira’s face Cachoeira started throwing caution to the wind as she just started unloading with every punch in her arsenal and she actually tagged Kim with a couple of stiff shots The only problem is Cachoeira had no interest in playing defense which allowed Kim to aim and fire on target with several staggering punches of her own Because Kim was always so willing to engage in a slugfest Cachoeira showcased her power by firing away with devastating combinations with little regard about what was being thrown back in her direction Cachoeira started to close the distance while firing off several nasty standing elbows that actually opened a couple of cuts on Kim’s face firing punches and elbows with relentless aggression and that paid off as she had her opponent hurt and stuck without an escape until the fight ended Cachoeira was understandably emotional following the win as she improved her record to 3-1 over her past four fights with a potential bonus coming her way after the war with Kim on Saturday night Check out the best photos from Miranda Maverick's third-round submission win over Priscila Cachoeira at UFC 291 at Delta Center in Salt Lake City Pope wins headdress made in São Gabriel da Cachoeira (AM) and asks: "listen to the indigenous people" A multi-ethnic headdress was taken to the Vatican by Bishop Edson Damian a city known for having the highest concentration of indigenous population in the country He was part of the entourage of 17 bishops from the Brazilian Amazon who attended the meeting with the Pope The artisan and indigenous entrepreneur Gilda da Silva Barreto received the commission to make the adornment “It was an honor and I thought of a headdress inspired by the Amazon I put red feathers on the underside for that reason,” she explained “I live in the indigenous culture and I am Catholic I carry the two things together,” she said the piece traditionally used by the religious to cover the head during ceremonies.  Participated in the meeting representatives of the North Regional 1 of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB) from the states of Amazonas and Roraima and from the Northwest (Acre named on May 29 as the first cardinal of the Brazilian Amazon but it coincided with the murder of journalist Dom Phillips and indigenist Bruno Araújo The crime led to mobilizations in various parts of the world with requests for justice and also generated a series of complaints about the neglect of the current Federal Government with the Amazon and its peoples According to information on the Vatican's official website the Pope urged the bishops to "listen to indigenous peoples There are a large number of unemployed and indigenous peoples are being threatened in their territories the illegal mining - All this is destroying our Amazon” Bishop Edson also thanked Pope Francis for the Synod for the Amazon but also for listening to indigenous peoples that took place before that meeting residents of the most distant communities received questionnaires and were heard,” he said “This is the church that lives the plurality the Public Defender's Office of the State of Amazonas (DPE-AM) denounced serious problems related to the health and that of Yanomami children living in the State of Amazonas instituting a Collective Damage Assessment Procedure (Padac) in order to investigate possible violations the fundamental rights of the Yanomami in the municipalities of São Gabriel da Cachoeira Priscila Cachoeira had a turbulent weekend in Las Vegas “Pedrita” took on Gillian Robertson in the first bout of the UFC 269 preliminaries this past Saturday at T-Mobile Arena and prior to fight night she missed weight badly at Friday morning’s official weigh-ins That wasn’t the end of the controversy for Cachoeira who went on to lose by submission late in Round 1 and was lambasted on social media for what looked to be an illegal attack on Robertson’s eyes as she tried to escape a rear-naked choke Cachoeira was fined 30 percent of her purse and the Brazilian fighter said she failed to make weight because she fell ill days before flying from Brazil to Las Vegas “Pedrita” said she was angry at herself for getting taken down and losing a fight “I had everything to win,” but denied attempting to gouge Robertson’s eyes on purpose to try to defend the choke “It wasn’t my intention to [gouge] her eye when she was on my back I didn’t know it was going in the direction of her eye,” Cachoeira said “My intention was to go for her neck and push it But it wasn’t my intention to hit her eyes “I’m a professional and I’ve already apologized to her in person and via Instagram I’ll wait for the dust to settle and work to come back stronger.” As for comments online asking for her release from the UFC as punishment for not making weight and eye gouging her opponent Cachoeira said “I’m still in the game and will come back stronger.” If I had to suffer any punishment it would come at that moment.” The first-round loss dropped Cachoeira's overall UFC record to 2-4 while Robertson set the record for most submission wins in women's UFC history The UFC's return to Salt Lake City continues to fill up with fights The most recent addition to UFC 291 is a flyweight bout between Joanne Wood and Priscila Cachoeira The event takes place July 29 at Delta Center with the main card on pay-per-view after prelims on ESPN/ESPN+ Two people with knowledge of the booking confirmed the matchup to MMA Junkie on Tuesday but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. weekend’s UFC event in Belem referee Mario Yamasaki drew the considerable ire of many watching — including UFC president Dana White — for his handling of the co-main event between Valentina Shevchenko and UFC newcomer Priscila Cachoeira Before winning by rear naked choke submission late in the second round Shevchenko unleashed a brutal assault on the up-to-then undefeated Brazilian appearing on the verge of earning a TKO victory on numerous occasions continually allowed Cachoeira the opportunity to weather the considerable storm past the point when many officials would have likely called off the bout This display led to White criticising Yamasaki on social media while simultaneously hailing Cachoeira’s fighting spirit Unfortunately the ref is there to protect you and Mario DID NOT do that This isn’t his first disgusting performance in the octagon Another unfortunate thing is that i can’t do anything about Only the Brazilian commission can and i am hoping after this scary incompetent showing he hopefully will never set foot in that Octagon again.” While that sentiment may intensify the debate as to whether Yamasaki’s officiating was in Cachoeira’s best interests In a statement released via her social media the Brazilian fighter says that she would never consent to her corner throwing in the towel friends and family that threw a party to watch my fight and I wasn’t the real ‘Pedrita’ in the fight Who knows me and followed my daily training knows what I could have done And even with the knee injury early in the fight I went until the end because I don’t know what giving up means I’ll have to have surgery on the ACL and meniscus And there’s people still talking about me fighting the top 1 and etc that my master told me to shut up and blah blah LOL “I’ll fight against any fighter in the world no matter which position she is [in the ranking] I’d fight Valentina 10 times more without thinking twice Who chooses easy battles is not a real warrior The treatment and intimacy that I have with my master the ones from outside doesn’t know anything to criticize this is PRVT and we’re the ones that know our limits “Thank you for all the messages of love and support I’ve been receiving I’m sure I’ve gotten a family for the rest of my life ‘A moment will not erase a history.’” The knee injury referenced by Cachoeira will likely mean it will be 2019 before she gets another opportunity in the new women’s flyweight division has likely cemented her place among the top contenders for Nicco Montano’s title Rio Negro youth: it is urgent to talk about climate justice and environmental racism in Indigenous Lands intense rains that flood and devastate crops in addition to forest fires that result in droughts and isolation of communities are just a few examples of the impacts of the climate emergency felt and narrated by indigenous people who live in communities in the Northwest Amazon — in border region with Venezuela and Colombia known as Cabeça do Cachorro Members of the indigenous youth of São Gabriel da Cachoeira coordinated by the Department of Adolescents and Young People (Dajirn) of the Federation of Indigenous Organizations of Rio Negro (Foirn) and the Wayuri Indigenous Communication Network participated on September 8 in a workshop on Climate Justice held by the Instituto Socioambiental (ISA) at the community telecenter There were 15 young indigenous people present who are leaders organizers and/or communicators for their people and communities from eight ethnic groups on the Rio Negro: Arapaso The workshop was organized and taught by the socio-environmental policy coordinator of ISA's Rio Negro Program and was mobilized by the Wayuri Indigenous Communication Network and the coordinator of Dajirn representative of the Municipal Secretariat of Youth Sports and Leisure of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (Semjel) also emphasized the importance of the Climate Justice agenda being included in the 3rd Municipal Youth Conference which will have the theme “Rebuild and Transform: Protagonism in defense of life The municipal event takes place on Wednesday (27/09) The workshop also had the support of the Rainforest Foundation together with the socio-environmental movement have been organizing meetings and taking the topic of the climate emergency to grassroots indigenous assemblies especially to youth meetings in the territories” specialist in Environmental Journalism who has already covered 10 Climate Conferences (COP) as a reporter it is time for indigenous youth from the Amazon to prepare to have an active voice at the UN Climate Conference in Belém being aware of what concepts such as climate emergency climate justice and environmental racism mean,” he added The workshop featured a presentation on the latest report by scientists from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – the IR6 The study brings the latest conclusions from 780 scientists around the world about the extremely serious climate situation on the planet due to the increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions there was also a presentation on the concepts of climate justice and environmental racism with examples and a conversation with the group Young people received support materials to work on the topic in their communities The objective is to mobilize the indigenous youth of Rio Negro on the topic of the climate emergency to build a Charter of Climate Rights for Indigenous Rio Negro Youth a calendar of activities is being finalized and will feature virtual and in-person meetings with Dajirn organizers in the five regions where Foirn operates Santa Isabel do Rio Negro and São Gabriel da Cachoeira The expansion of internet points by Foirn has also facilitated the mobilization of young indigenous people on relevant and strategic issues for their communities we urgently need to know and study the Climate Emergency and the factors that affect and contribute to climate change I and the other indigenous people also need technical training to be able to work with this topic within the communities and understand the technical side of science we want to bring comparison and dialogue with indigenous knowledge and thus indigenous and non-indigenous knowledge can greatly contribute to solutions Indigenous knowledge is still alive and we need to create a digital platform to feed the data collected and those yet to be collected and thus we urgently need to carry out and mobilize campaigns in indigenous territory to address this issue of climate emergency I also see it as a great opportunity to showcase indigenous knowledge in these future discussions.” “We are already seeing the consequences of climate change according to research carried out by our Indigenous Environmental Management Agents (Aimas) who report the latest events in the Rio Negro region This observation is very impactful and we view the current environmental reality in Rio Negro with concern so that we can participate in an issue that is extremely important to us and that will have a lot of impact in the future We need to present our proposals as young people and as indigenous residents of Rio Negro We have our own management of the environment as well as other management of the world around us We have to present proposals that are always linked to our culture as well as needing to dialogue with our Territorial and Environmental Management Plan (PGTA) We also see that we cannot adapt to these climate changes as quickly as white people who can make these adaptations very quickly because they have money and a lot of resources to invest We here need the implementation of public policies that can benefit our people and communities that are affected by the consequences of climate change Even though we have a good traditional way of living we notice the need to have help from the government's public policies on this issue of climate change we need to preserve and also have a partnership with other people from outside who help us preserve our region” It was great to learn about this concept and follow the debate with the participants and with the Wayuri Network with the communicators themselves who have the role of publicizing and talking about our environment There were points brought by young people from villages and larger districts who will take the topic of climate justice to their communities The importance of caring for the environment to combat the climate emergency was very clear My observation is that this topic needs to be multiplied in communities native fruits and fruits planted by our grandparents and parents we forget to value and care for what is essential to our lives And our duty is to take this care of our territory The environmental impacts caused in other states and other countries have also been affecting us Because here we still have generations that have direct contact with the river the forest and the traditional way of eating Taking care of our environment is also taking care of our own health That's why we need to make caring for the environment our battle flag as indigenous youth and we must multiply this care during the 54th session of the UN Human Rights Council Instituto Maíra and the Indigenous Association of the Arara People of Cachoeira Seca – KOWIT – denounced violations of indigenous rights in Brazil particularly the situation facing the people of the Cachoeira Seca Indigenous Territory.  president of the Kowit Association in Cachoeira Seca Indigenous Territory called for the indigenous people´s land and lives to be respected he said that demarcation of the Arara People´s territory took place in 2016 thirty years after their first contact with non-indigenous people.  we are fighting to remove over 2 thousand invaders the consequence of the installation of the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant These impacts mean our territory is among those that most suffer from deforestation in Brazil” The organisations requested the effort of the international community in the deoccupation of the Cachoeira Seca Indigenous Territory Last week, the organisations launched a report “Lives in territories under pressure: the Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau, Paiter Suruí and Arara peoples” resistance and protection strategies of the indigenous peoples.  2025 - Conectas Human Rights - Postal Code 47 - São Paulo (SP) Brazil - ZIP: 01032-970 - Phone: +55 (11) 3884-7440 Not only was Priscila Cachoeira’s UFC debut as hard-to-watch as they come it left her with a long recovery period ahead amid the whirlwind of emotions that followed it Cachoeira recently had surgery to repair the ACL and meniscus tears suffered in her UFC Fight Night 125 meting with Valentina Shevchenko She’s been rehabbing her knee five days a week She remains confident in her skills and is eager to return to the octagon for her "real" debut though you'll find no hint of self-pity in Cachoeira's voice talking to her weeks later her mind was at a much different place when returned from the hospital early in February recovering from injuries is not exactly a breezy process for any athlete Being bed-ridden for at least the first few days needing assistance from anything to showering from peeing going from a day of perpetual motion to a morose routine the time I had at home I was always doing something most opinions seemed to agree on one thing: there was a mismatch at the root of what turned out to be a one-sided affair it took a while to be able to fully absorb the events surrounding her octagon debut because I’d go online and see it being called ‘massacre' or ‘beatdown,’” Cachoeira said that I’d need surgery and be off for six months I questioned if I really wasn’t at UFC level.” those feelings of self-doubt lingered for the three weeks that it took for Cachoeira to get over her mental block and finally watch the fight with coach Gilliard Parana 'Why,' I started asking 'What for?'" Cachoeira said "And that’s when my heart started calming down and that’s when I was able to watch the fight He said he always knew of my potential and that he knew if I was OK it would have been a different fight.” meeting a top contender in Shevchenko could have translated into a loss anyway But watching it back made her confident that the bout would have unfolded differently had it not been for the physical issue but it would have been a war,” Cachoeira said because everything that happened there was exactly what I’d trained for But I didn’t have a knee to finish my movements I’ll end the fight.’ I found a way to move and show I was still in the fight Cachoeira had felt something in her knee in training two weeks prior but figured she would just go easy on it for the remainder of the camp and "But then in the fight you realize my knee pops in the first 20 seconds,” Cachoeira said "It seemed like what happened was that I took a step back with that right that step back was me preparing to come back on my usual bulldozer mode asked me if I’d felt the punch and said I hadn’t That’s when another infamous moment of the fight "That was a 'Listen to me,’” Cachoeira said My connection with him is that of father and daughter Considering Cachoeira didn’t run any tests at the time her knee acted out in training there’s no way of knowing how bad the knee issue was before the fight – or how (or if) it could have manifested itself afterward in what Cachoeira takes as a major consolation the fact that it came to pass inside the octagon meant she was able to get a very expensive surgery taken care of by the UFC And it was during a post-fight interview in Brazil that Cachoeira met the person that would help her get her extensive care she wouldn’t have been able to afford otherwise which involves spending several hours a day working with specialists from major sports club Vasco da Gama Cachoeira's dedication to rehab showed benefits that extend far beyond the physical having started this rehab process,” Cachoeira said I have fun with the doctor and the therapists because it was very rocky in the beginning.” She's looking at somewhere between six to eight months before resuming training But there's one lesson that her debut taught her when it comes to making projections for the future “I’ve always been very hasty,” Cachoeira said So I put it in my head: I won’t step on that stage until I’m feeling 100 percent Only then will we be able to make an assessment of my fight It’s been some trying times for someone who’d seen quite her share of those in her life already but Cachoeira believes things happen for a reason while many were critical of the idea of having a UFC newcomer with no big-league experience meet a former title challenger and perennial top contender in Shevchenko “I took this fight with Valentina not just because I was fearless and because I don’t turn down fights,” Cachoeira said I’ll have to get past her anyway.’ I also thought about the fact that it was Valentina and that it would get me known Of course didn’t expect it to happen that way but it did and that’s how it was supposed to But when (coach Gilliard Parana) told Valentina would be the opponent ‘I want this fight.’ He asked if I was sure if she wasn't at the level of her octagon peers And she still hasn't given up hope of going toe-to-toe with “Bullet.” “I’m sure I’ll be back and I’ll even ask for the rematch,” Cachoeira said because I will be at 100 percent an able to show what I’m capable of I’m recovering to show the world who’s the real ‘Pedrita.’” For more on the UFC’s upcoming schedule, check out the UFC Rumors section of the site [sigallery id="2s5k3AFUyXJrP7ndeeQaZ8" title="Shevchenko def Inauguration of new bishop of São Gabriel Indigenous Communicators that promotes film screenings in São Gabriel da Cachoeira - participating in debates and publicizing the program during masses.  The Diocese is made up of 11 parishes: three in the city of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (Catedral Iauaretê and Pari-Cachoeira (Triângulo Tukano) There are also the parishes of Santa Isabel do Rio Negro and Barcelos.  then Father Vanthuy was in São Gabriel and met leaders of indigenous communities and participated in a meeting at the School of Theology when the Letter of Commitment to Prevent Violence and Suicide was launched.  this is an initiative that will bring benefits to the entire population “My last days in São Gabriel are crowned by timely proposals that will bring benefits to the population,” he said He received a visit to the Diocese from the Minister of Environment and Climate Change passing on to them the demands contained in the letter.  Very emotional during the ceremony of exchanging bishops saying that in his heart he has a place for all those with whom he walked Dom Edson now becomes bishop emeritus of the Diocese of São Gabriel da Cachoeira and He spoke of the great learning he had alongside the indigenous people: “The indigenous people taught me to live with what is strictly necessary and to be happy.” Dom Edson recalled some passages while he was in charge of the most indigenous Diocese in the country Before coming here (São Gabriel da Cachoeira) I was advised to listen to several wise men who had worked here One of them was called Father Casimiro Beksta He was a Salesian who was very sensitive to indigenous cultural values and was the first to start studying a lot we even owe him the translation of Grünberg's book from German to Portuguese (Theodor Koch-Grünberg - “Two years among the indigenous: travels in northwestern Brazil - 1903-1905”) It was the priest who discovered the talent of the Feliciano Lana (indigenous artist visiting a community near the Tiquié River and offering materials to it.  I visited the old Salesian who was bedridden to do an interview And one of the things he said to me was: “you are arriving at a totally different reality with extraordinary sociocultural and linguistic richness You take a notebook to record each day what you saw the people you talked to.” And I did that from day one Today I have around 15 diaries with these notes.  I remember the fear I felt when I went to visit the communities above Iauaretê On the Uaupés River and the Papuri River there are very dangerous waterfalls And the indigenous practitioners said: “Bishop here we can pass the waterfall without disembarking.” And I thought took a shower of water that was coming at us You walk along the trail that we take along the river.”  then over time I took the vest and used it to sit on top we put God to the test and trust too much.  knowing that it was the last trip I would take along the Papuri River there is the famous Cachoeira do Pato – there are three waterfalls I’m going to climb the waterfall alone.” There was always someone else who helped carry the material and he walked the trail for more than an hour and got on board again at the top.  have you already climbed Cachoeira do Pato?” I replied no “But this time there is enough water to climb safely.” I asked “Are you sure?” "I have." Young people are like that.  But I felt safe in this young man and managed to cross the three waterfalls I can now go through this adventure too.  I was going from Maturacá (in Yanomami territory) to visit the Maiá community We left early in the morning because we would arrive there in the late afternoon It had been about three hours since we left the village and the pilot I was sitting on the voodeira (small motorized vessel) and I fell When I was sinking in the water I remembered: “my parents and family will receive me dead And the following miracle happened: the pilot he removed the hose that supplied the engine but the flight didn't move because it had no fuel.  And there was a seminarian who was sleeping in the flight When he saw that I went up asking for help he took me by the arms and helped me get back in was swimming with one hand and carrying a stool with the other he had to sit on the stool to be able to drive I thought I was going to leave for eternity they told me: prepare yourself for malaria which is the baptism we receive when we get there.  because there is malaria in all the villages I visited all the villages and left here without any malaria.  if only one or two languages were spoken here he taught me how I should say “good morning so I learned these few words in several languages they said: “but the bad bishop arrived and already speaks our language.” Of course When I went to Rome for my first visit to Pope Benedict XVI I was prepared for 15 minutes of conversation you will give a short report on the situation in the Diocese.” I arrived you must spend many hours on the rivers”.  First question: “Are the people of that region destroying the forest a lot?” Then it was my turn to say: “it is the most preserved region in the Amazon because the inhabitants are indigenous people: 90% The indigenous people do not destroy the forest This is why it is explained that they do not destroy now I’m going to confess in my own language.” The Pope asked me: “Do you understand all languages?” I replied: “in what way he made all people in his image and likeness In 2015, Pope Francis wrote the encyclical Lovato si´ A letter addressed to the entire world talking about caring for our common home The need to completely change this system that he calls technocratic that is destroying and endangering the survival of humanity calling for a special synod for the Amazon This meeting is dedicated to the theme of integral ecology Then I was able to speak personally with the pope and gave him the chalice made of brazilwood by a craftsman here He looked at me and said: “Today marks 75 years since I made my first communion”.  Afterwards, I was able to make another visit now in 2021, with all 19 bishops from the North region. I I took a gift in the name of all bishops At the end of the conversation I approached and said: “look Amazonas is the state that has the largest indigenous population in the country and that is why I am offering you this gift that was made by indigenous women there in São Gabriel.” he asked: “Can you imagine if I appeared in Saint Peter’s Square with a miter like that?” One of the things that impressed me were the people who live in such isolated communities We arrived in communities to visit homes with almost nothing one of the lessons I learned here is called sobriety Indigenous people teach us to live with what is strictly necessary we are happier than buying and consuming unrestrainedly This consumerist materialism is destroying mother Earth and generating people who are always dissatisfied and unhappy  The indigenous people taught me to live with what is strictly necessary and be happy Ariane Lipski will face off with Priscila Cachoeira at UFC Vegas 59 on Saturday The 3.04 per minute Guy's Pick: Take Priscila Cachoeira (+145) recently traveled to the Brazilian Cerrado to report on the impacts of booming agribusiness on the savanna environment and on the traditional people living there This is the second story in a series telling what they found there Brazil — Guilherme Ferreira de Souza’s world changed forever one day in 2009 he traversed the distance from his home in a lush savanna river valley up onto the high plains mesa where his cattle grazed only to find the shrubby dry forest razed in preparation for the planting of row crops That moment has since morphed into what investigators say could be one of the biggest land grabs in Bahia state history One judge already incarcerated in the case gave a favorable decision to a mega-farm that took over lands where traditional communities had lived for generations Other evidence indicates that this same farm may have originated through a fraudulent land deal made by one of the companies that started it — the Delfin Group a Rio de Janeiro millionaire dubbed the “conqueror of western Bahia.” corn and cotton plantations known collectively as the Agronegocio Condominio Cachoeira do Estrondo is located in Brazil’s fourth largest soy producing municipality which exports a large portion of its agricultural commodities to the EU and China Known locally as “Estrondo,” the mega-farm now has extended virtually to de Souza’s doorstep Guards paid for by Estrondo have erected watchtowers and fences to block villagers from accessing their traditional lands and these armed men have reportedly repeatedly intimidated members of the seven communities that live in the valley the 400 people who have resided here their entire lives find themselves encircled by soy and cotton fields that are heavily sprayed with toxic pesticides that run off into the Rio Preto from which local residents drink near us,” de Souza told Mongabay when a reporting team visited the community in 2019 “Today there are six watchtowers around us Estrondo has even blocked them from accessing the other six small communities located farther down the valley “They do not let us pass,” de Souza told us drinking sweet coffee as the sun shone hotly down on the simple structure that serves as his kitchen and the communal gathering place for the village De Souza and his neighbors — traditional farmers and descendants of indigenous and Afro-Brazilian quilombola peoples — have fought back in court a lower court granted the seven local traditional communities their right to 43,000 hectares (106,000 acres) bordering the Estrondo estate and ordered the removal of Estrondo’s security cabins The decision was upheld in May 2018 by a Bahia state court of appeals When asked by Mongabay why Estrondo had still not complied with the court rulings the public relations agency representing Estrondo cited an excerpt from a court order written by Judge Sérgio Humberto Sampaio a municipal judge in Formosa do Rio Preto on November 27 Sampaio issued a favorable decision to Estrondo reducing the area claimed by the geraizeiros communities from 43,000 to 9,000 hectares (106,000 to 22,000 acres) Sampaio is now one of several judges and rural producers targeted in a federal police investigation dubbed “Operation Far West,” and is one of few judges to be incarcerated already recorded financial transactions of 14 million reais (US$3.3 million) linked to Sampaio between January 2013 and 2019 Of the total 7 million reais (US$1.7 million) he received only 1.7 million reais (US$402,000) were in salary payments Agronegocio Condominio Cachoeira do Estrondo has grown to be Bahia’s largest agribusiness landholding The exact size of the mega-farm is uncertain; in a Mongabay request for comment Esrondo claimed its agribusiness tenants occupied only 200,000 hectares (494,000 acres) up until the recent investigation Estrondo claimed to occupy 305,000 hectares (754,000 acres) on its website — an area roughly four times the size of New York City The mega-farm encompasses 41 tenants who grow commodities mostly for export While exact numbers from Estrondo are unavailable half the soy planted in Formosa do Rio Preto and shipped to China and the European Union in what people say was an attempt to evict them from traditional pasturelands However, the dispute between Estrondo and Aldeia isn’t a local anomaly. The last report from the Comissão Pastoral da Terra (CPT) an organ of the Brazilian Catholic Church that deals with the problems of the rural poor identified 1,489 land conflicts in Brazil in 2018 mining and violence against local people — conflicts marked by murders with about one million people involved; that’s a 36% increase between 2017 and 2018 Traditional populations are the target of 73.5% of conflicts over land and water the state of Bahia alone recorded 182 rural conflicts involving 156,000 people After an hour and a half drive on well-maintained highways a dirt state highway continuously packed down by commodities-loaded 18-wheelers blasting past us BA-458 ran arrow-straight through Formosa do Rio Preto which lies at the heart of what boosters call “Brazil’s last agricultural frontier,” also dubbed Matopiba by agribusiness promoters — a farm and ranch commodities region sprawling across Maranhão and composed of 337 municipalities — some which have among the fastest rates of deforestation in Brazil The majority of soy produced in Formosa do Rio Preto is exported, according to Trase municipal-level supply chain data and China nearly 20% of all soy produced there in 2017; Brazil uses nearly 38% sourced from the Brazilian government and made rapidly available by NGO initiatives like those maintained by Trase have illuminated the formerly opaque supply chains that undergird the soy industry’s rushed expansion — an almost 500% increase over the last decade in Formosa do Rio Preto alone Nearly all that soy is grown to feed meat and dairy cattle who still remembers a time when the chapadas — the high flat Cerrado mesas — were covered in native vegetation rather than soy the pace of agribusiness encroachment has been alarming and disruptive he is descended from a mix of freed and runaway slaves peasant farmers and indigenous peoples who migrated here over many decades past He identifies most with the term geraizeiros — a legally-recognized designation for traditional people living in the sertão the backcountry Cerrado savanna northeast of the Amazon basin “My great grandfather was born and died here My mother was born here and is still alive today; she is 85 years old I was born and raised here; I’m 63 years old,” said de Souza Most traditional Cerrado people live today in the baixos were long reserved for grazing livestock and for hunting tapir The wildlife and vegetation of the higher plains are gone now “Deforestation has ended everything,” said de Souza Some of the region’s only remaining natural savanna is in the valley where de Souza lives. But even those wildlands, according to Estrondo’s website have been claimed by the agribusiness producers marked and fenced in as their “legal reserve,” — the percentage of undeveloped land that farmers in Brazil are required to preserve according to the federal Forest Code We arrived at the edge of Estrondo’s legal reserve, which started just past a rusty sign for “Alaska,” a set of dry, dusty fields being worked over by a tractor. According to the companies’ website 25% of Estrondo’s total landholdings are designated as a legal reserve 5% more than the amount Brazil’s Forest Code mandates in the region But what Estrondo’s website fails to mention is that this legal reserve doesn’t just protect local fauna and hemmed in by fences and guardhouses — people with nowhere to go and cut off from traditional livelihoods connected on both sides to many miles of electrified barbed wire A mile down the fence was the first of several guardhouses In the runup to Mongabay’s visit, Aldeia suffered harassment from Estrondo security guards, but its residents fared better than neighbors in other traditional villages. People in Cachoeira were harassed and shot at in 2019, including one shooting recorded on video. Violent threats by Estrondo guards have been reported to police and independent litigators in the state Public Ministry’s Office Formosa do Rio Preto is located more than 600 miles away from Salvador “They don’t respect anything; they don’t respect the law,” said de Souza of Estrondo’s hired enforcers “We have been abandoned by the justice system Aldeia still lacks access to its common lands for grazing for the gathering of fruits and other foods for the harvesting of golden grass to roof its homes Villagers are also experiencing serious health problems “The pesticides are killing us,” said Josino Guedes de Souza Guilherme’s son and the 28-year-old president of the Village Association the community’s sole source of water for drinking “the rain takes the pesticides down to the riverbed the large amounts of agrochemicals applied to soy during planting season cause skin rashes and other medical conditions serious questions have been raised about the mega-farm’s origins and whether Estrondo’s parent registration — the legal bedrock upon which the entire enterprise is based — may be fraudulent the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (INCRA) published a book detailing major land grabbing operations in Brazil Listed in first place in Bahia was a 444,000 hectare (1.1 million acre) holding belonging to Delfin S/A Crédito Imobiliária the União de Construtoras company pledged the lands of Fazenda Estrondo as collateral to Delfin Rio SA Real Estate Credit in the late 1980s União de Construtoras defaulted and Delfin Rio enforced the guarantee In November 2019, land grabbing in western Bahia was targeted by a Federal Police investigation which has uncovered a major corruption scheme involving magistrates and officials of the Bahia State Court of Justice along with prominent lawyers and rural producers Formosa do Rio Preto officials are among those under investigation Alleged perpetrators reportedly secured the sale of court rulings that legitimized stolen land Estrondo replied to Mongabay’s queries in a 14-page missive saying in short that “information claiming that their operation was born of land grabbing and fraud is false.” Banner image caption: More than 40 families live in Aldeia the largest of the seven traditional communities located within the legal reserve claimed by Estrondo FEEDBACK: Use this form to send a message to the author of this post A bloody UFC Vegas 49 card has left several fighters the worse for wear According to the list of medical suspensions acquired by mixedmartialarts.com, Priscila Cachoeira is one of five fighters who could be out of action until August following Saturday’s event at UFC APEX in Las Vegas Cachoeira defeated Ji Yeon Kim in a closely contested bout that earned both women the Fight of the Night award and an extra $50,000 each The Brazilian flyweight requires clearance from an ENT (ear or an ophthalmologist for a right nasomaxillary suture fracture as well as clearance from an orthopedic doctor for a first metacarpal base fracture to avoid the six-month suspension UFC Vegas 49 was overseen by the Nevada Athletic Commission See the full list of medical suspensions below: Wellington Turman: Suspended until March 29 Misha Cirkunov: Suspended until March 29 Priscila Cachoeira: Must receive clearance from ENT or ophthalmologist for right nasomaxillary suture fracture and clearance orthopedic doctor for first metacarpal base fracture or or no contest until Aug Minimum suspension no contest until April 13 no contact until March 29 — laceration repair Arman Tsarukyan: Suspended until March 20 Joel Alvarez: Suspended until April 13 no contact until March 29 — laceration repair on nose near left eye Armen Petrosyan: Must have X-ray on left foot must receive clearance from orthopedic doctor or no contest until Aug Gregory Rodrigues: Must receive clearance for lacerations on right face and left leg or no contest until April 13 Rong Zhu: Suspended until April 13 Ramona Pascual: Must receive clearance from ENT or ophthalmologist for bilateral nasal bone fracture or no contest until Aug Minimum suspension no contest until March 29 Jonathan Martinez: Must have X-ray on left foot Alejandro Perez: Suspended until March 29 Carlos Hernandez: Must have MRI on left knee Victor Altamirano: Suspended until March 29 Jasudavicius came as close to scoring a 10-7 round as it gets in all three rounds ¡SE LA LLEVA JASMINE JASUDAVICIUS 🇨🇦 VÍA D'ARCE CHOKE! #UFC297 pic.twitter.com/HXOPtg82jc There was a clear skill disparity between the women in the grappling battering her bloodied foe with relentless ground and pound and locking in tight submissions The beatdown continued for almost the full 15 minutes before Jasudavicius tapped Cachoeira with an anaconda choke The Canadian fighter landed 326 strikes compared to Cachoeira's 26 - over twelve times the output Cachoeira suffered a similar shutout loss to Valentina Shevchenko in 2018, landing three strikes to Shevchenko's 230. The official scorecard would have Jasudavicius scoring a 10-8 in round one and two on every card This bout marks the first UFC fight officiated by referee Matthew Rocha Fans will have to wait until the event concludes to see if any repercussions come as a result of the officiating Jasudavicius remarked that Cachoeira should get her "s*** together" regarding her weight miss The bout was originally scheduled for flyweight but the Brazilian slugger requested it take place at bantamweight on short notice after missing weight Cachoeira will forfeit a percentage of her purse as well as Night 125 0-1 UFC) is now looking at surgery on her right knee to repair ACL and meniscus tears that appear to have occurred early in the flyweight co-headliner The information was confirmed to MMAjunkie by Cachoeira’s manager, Tiago Okamura, and coach Gilliard Parana after an initial report by MMAFighting.com she took a wrong step and her knee went out of place,” Okamura told MMAjunkie Okamura says the team remained in the hospital until 7 a.m this morning and an MRI confirmed the tears While a date for surgery is still to be set with Dr Okamura says doctors initially estimate it will be from six to eight months until she can train properly she was in no condition to defend herself or do anything The fight wasn’t supposed to have happened the way it did Coach Parana, who posted a message on his Instagram page firing back at critics and saying how proud he was of “Pedrita,” agrees that we would have seen a different fight at Mangueirinho Gymnasium in Belem "She got hurt early in the fight and then fought almost two entire rounds “Maybe she would have lost either way to Valentina because Valentina is a top pound-for-pound fighter At the end of the fight, which Shevchenko entered as a 10-1 favorite, referee Mario Yamasaki was under fire for allowing the fight to go on as long as it did says he would have understood had Yamasaki decided to stop it but is also OK with his call "I think he had his reasons not to stop it," Parana said "He knows what he's doing and 'Pedrita' was active Had they known the injury was as severe as it was he would have "for sure" asked to stop the bout before Round 2 began thinking it was just a strain or something of that sort at the time the coach said the punishment alone didn't prompt them to consider quitting "We never thought about quitting and we never will," Parana said For complete coverage of UFC Fight Night 125, check out the UFC Events section of the site Priscila Cachoeira’s latest fight is off At Friday’s She said she tested positive for a diuretic. Tatame was the first to report the news Cachoeira said she was visiting her mother on Oct 10 when she started feeling ill with high blood pressure and blurred vision is that the medication her mother administered was hydrocholorothiazide which is listed as a banned substance by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) Hydrocholorothiazide is a diuretic that can also be used as a masking agent Cachoeira says she was randomly drug tested by USADA on Oct two days after visiting her mother in Bangu and was informed on Tuesday that the test came back positive for the substance “It was an accident,” Cachoeira told MMA Fighting on Wednesday so she gave me the medicine she usually takes I called my mom asking which medicine she gave me that I’m an athlete and I’m the one that should worry about it.” “Pedrita” hopes that USADA understands the circumstances and gives her a reduced suspension — or no punishment at all “I hope USADA understands the desperation of a mother seeing her daughter ill,” Cachoeira said “I wasn’t even thinking straight when that happened.” Lipski told MMA Fighting she’s hoping that the UFC finds another flyweight to face her on 10 days’ notice UFC flyweight Priscila Cachoeira went under the knife Friday “Pedrita” suffered a meniscus and ACL tear in her UFC debut PRVT head coach Gilliard Parana told MMA Fighting Surgery was a success and Cachoeira is expected to be cleared to train again in six months The flyweight entered the Octagon for the first time after building a 8-0 record in the Brazilian circuit, but suffered a one-sided beating by the hands of Valentina Shevchenko in the co-main event of UFC Belem on Feb Cachoeira injured her right knee seconds into the bout and UFC officials for booking what was considered a mismatch Having lived a life of struggle from an early age Mobu Odo Arara says that “this is how we live day to day in our village: being persecuted” The situation facing this Indigenous Land is told in “Lives in territories under pressure: the Uru-eu-wau-wau by Conectas in partnership with the Kanindé Ethno-Environmental Defense Association the Jupaú Association and the Kowit Association.  >>>Access the report “Lives in territories under pressure: the Uru-eu-wau-wau, Paiter Suruí and Arara tribes” Data and information were gathered on public health illegal activities by third parties inside the territory impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the political and social organization of three indigenous lands (Cachoeira Seca In addition to exposing the context behind the threats the report also presents the mechanisms of resistance and forest preservation and the traditional knowledge held by the indigenous groups.  The goal is to strengthen the participating organizations and expose the issues faced by indigenous peoples and indigenists we didn’t have the opportunity to disseminate our image but today we are finding partners,” said Timbektodem Arara who participated in the launch of the report alongside the other guests Mborep Uru Eu Wau Wau The Cachoeira Seca Indigenous Land is located between the Iriri and Xingu rivers On this Indigenous Land of 734,000 hectares lives the Arara tribe which for years has had to contend with intense conflicts with ruralists Approved as an Indigenous Land in April 2016 the government has still not relocated the more than 1,200 non-indigenous families living inside the territory The construction of the Trans-Amazonian highway and the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam illustrates how the Land has suffered territorial violations for years and even though the environmental and social conditions of the projects required the proper regularization of the territory there is a new threat: the Volta Grande-Belo Sun Project which is projected to be the largest open-pit gold mine in Brazil There are already more than twenty requests for gold mining surveys in the area surrounding the Indigenous Land in addition to the problem of deforestation in the territory. Records from the National Space Research Institute (INPE) show that the rate of loss of the ecosystem in the Cachoeira Seca Indigenous Land is only increasing Among the illegal activities that result in deforestation and other violations the leaders highlighted logging and illegal livestock farming Chief Mobu Odo Arara explained that the lack of adequate resources is one of the main difficulties in dealing with the friction “We don’t have the means to confront the ruralists because they have power and money,” he said referring to the intense lobbying conducted by agribusiness and its representatives “Our territory has turned into the world’s business exhibit Every day that passes we hear more chainsaws chewing up our land […] The Arara people will never abandon their territory Our warriors will not allow our forest to be destroyed Together we will protect our river Iriri,” wrote Mobu Odo Arara and Timbektodem Arara in a passage from the report The Kowit Association is one of the organizations representing the Arara tribe It was created in 2017 and speaks for the Iriri and Awey indigenous villages The organization focuses on guaranteeing territorial rights to shout out to the world that these people are fighting for rights and for respect the Arara tribe published its Protocol for Free written and organized by the indigenous group with guidance on how they want to be consulted in cases of projects and/or initiatives that affect their territories our speech and our construct that is in there but the white man does not respect this protocol,” lamented Timbektodem Arara It all went down in the very first match of the 14-bout UFC 269 card when Gillian Robertson took on Priscilla Cachoeira Robertson defeated Cachoeira with a rear-naked choke with one second remaining on the first-round clock Victory advanced her pro MMA record to 10 wins (one knockout and saw her rebound after suffering back-to-back losses It was not Robertson who attracted the headlines post-fight but rather Cachoeira because of the way in which she tried to prevent defeat in those dying moments of the opening round When Robertson locked in her submission hold Cachoeira attempted an eye gouge — an illegal move in mixed martial arts "Look at this," UFC commentator Joe Rogan said on the official ESPN broadcast "She definitely looked like she was trying to stick a finger in her eye The "dirty" maneuver did not affect the outcome of the fight as Robertson went on to win in conclusive fashion "I'm definitely hoping that the ref just stops the fight at that point wondering like why he's not even … I don't even think he gave her a warning," Robertson told reporters after her win "There was two that were pretty clear that were thumb straight in my eye." Robertson said that she felt Cachoeira's body go limp and assumed she was unconscious from the submission and knew that there was more work to do to get the win Robertson finished by saying that she does not hold any ill will toward Cachoeira "I still got the win — nothing I can complain about." The fight was broadcast on ESPN+ and UFC Fight Pass BELEM, Brazil — Valentina Shevchenko is already seen by many pundits and fans as a future flyweight title contender, even before making her 125-pound debut in the UFC. But Priscila Cachoeira Shevchenko’s first opponent in the division The undefeated Brazilian makes her Octagon debut against Shevchenko at UFC’s first trip to Belem on Feb. 3, and she didn’t anticipate being matched up against “Bullet” so quickly after pulling out of a December bout with Lauren Murphy due to visa issues ”I wasn’t expecting to face one of the top fighters in the UFC right away but I like the idea,” Cachoeira told MMA Fighting “When I was asked if I would take the fight Cachoeira is 8-0 in MMA with four stoppage victories, but no one really expects her to replicate that success against the woman that gave Amanda Nunes her toughest test as bantamweight champion back in September. But Cachoeira, who think Shevchenko should’ve beaten Nunes at UFC 215 ”I will shock the world with a win. I will even shock Dana White and the UFC crew,” Cachoeira said “I just got in the UFC and I’m going all the way to the top right away I have what it takes to defeat Valentina.” A teammate of Jessica Andrade at Parana Vale Tudo Cachoeira says her strategy changed a bit after switching opponents from Murphy to Shevchenko but she won’t tip her hand about what those adjustments could be ”Are you publishing this before or after the fight?” she said “Just write that you will find out Saturday.” Cachoeira competed in a few 125-pound bouts early in her career “Pedrita” believes she will carry an advantage into Belem because Shevchenko isn’t used to the local weather and she expects her opponent to feel the weight cut ”She’s fighting at this weight class for the first time in the UFC “I’ve made this weight three times before and I’m used to it so going to 125 bring a little discomfort as well.” The Brazilian newcomer predicts that she will knock Shevchenko out on Saturday night — “Absolutely yes,” she guarantees — but she doesn’t expect that such an impressive feat would immediately translate into a UFC title shot but I don’t believe they will give it to me right away,” she said They just opened the division and are testing the girls so a title shot might come faster than in other divisions.” Nicco Montano is the UFC’s first women’s flyweight champion after winning the 26th season of The Ultimate Fighter, having defeated veteran Roxanne Modafferi in the season finale in December, but “Pedrita” sees Montano as the new Carla Esparza who won the UFC inaugural strawweight strap through the reality show but never successfully defended the title ”I have what it takes to hold this belt,” Cachoeira said “Nicco won’t stay champion too long because I’m coming to take the belt from her and there are other girls that are capable of taking the belt away from her.” As fans watching elite athletes put their health on the line purely for our entertainment it’s sometimes easy to forget the difficulties associated with the journey of becoming a mixed martial artist or pro fighter in general These are just a few of the many negative adjectives that can be used to describe these difficulties It’s tough for the average fan to imagine being in a fighter’s shoes and having to go through events such as suffering extensive losing streaks the inability to work extensively while sidelined and being cut by the company that you dreamt of joining after putting in years of hard work After experiencing a troubled childhood in which she was stabbed and addicted to crack cocaine for several years Priscila Cachoeira was able to clean up and eventually found mixed martial arts She ultimately made her pro debut in June 2016 and amassed an 8-0 record going into 2018 Cachoeira made her UFC debut against current women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko and suffered a brutal loss via rear-naked choke after Shevchenko outstruck her 230-3 The Brazilian endured multiple injuries before returning to the Octagon in 2019 to suffer losses to Molly McCann and Luana Carolina After compiling an impressive undefeated mark prior to joining the UFC Cachoeira seemed like she was headed out the door soon after three disappointing performances in the organization Cachoeira was in a precarious situation going into her bout with Shana Dobson at UFC on ESPN+ 26 She entered the Octagon against her fellow UFC flyweight as a +165 underdog and in dire need of a win Cachoeira and Dobson served as the first fight on the card They were tasked with kicking off the evening with a bang in front of over 10,000 New Zealanders in the Spark Arena As the combatants signaled their confirmation to the referee that they were ready to go to war What fans did not expect was a 40-second knockout Cachoeira stunned the crowd by landing a beautifully timed right uppercut that sent Dobson to the canvas She followed the attack up with a few ground strikes until the official had no choice but to intervene and rule the bout in favor of Cachoeira via knockout The Brazilian native rushed to the center of Octagon She conveyed signs of relief and happiness After an extremely difficult start to her UFC career Cachoeira was finally able to display why the UFC signed her in the first place and gave her another shot this past weekend After a performance nothing short of extraordinary Cachoeira’s first win in the Octagon has effectively reset her UFC career
