Serving the hydro power and dam construction industries since 1949
Bayardo Materón reflects on his experience of working with compacted rockfill dams
compacted rockfill dams began to evolve and grew in height over a short period
from 110m to concrete-faced structures approaching 300m high
1 presents the record of CFRD and Asphalt Core type dams built with compacted rockfill
indicating the years in which they were the highest dams in the world
except for Brazil’s Campos Novos Dam which had noticeable breaks
Campos Novos was built with the following characteristics: L 592m; L/H 2.93; A/H2 2.60 – Basalt
The dam had a rapid lowering of the reservoir due to problems in the diversion tunnels
but this allowed us to see the arrangement of the central and lateral cracks that affected the slab
slab fractures also occurred at other CFRD type dams
Built in China it was 178m high with the following characteristics: L 1104m; L/H = 6.2; A/H2 5.68
This dam presented fractures in the central part which were repaired during lowering of the reservoir
the same type of breakage could be observed
which was corrected using a compressible membrane that would mitigate the movement of the slabs
avoiding the transfer of forces that would break the slab
It should also be noted that the rockfill of this dam is made of limestone that tends to produce a well-graded rockfill with good compaction characteristics
Other slab fractures also occurred at the 185m high Barra Grande Dam in Brazil
Built with the following characteristics: L -665m L/H 3.59; A/H2 3.16 – Basalt
it had breakage in the central compression joints
Table 2 identifies a group of CFRD type dams that were identified as possibly having problems with fracturing of the main slab and were studied and corrected to avoid breaks in the slab
The Bakún dam slab was built in two stages
The lower stage 1 from the middle to the river bed and the upper stage 2 to the crown of the dam
Observations of the fractured dams indicated lower slab breaks and it was necessary to cut the lower joints of face 1 to introduce deformable wood that would mitigate the breakage of the slabs
The central joints were cut with a steel disc to introduce wood that mitigates the movements of the slabs and prevents their fracture
The top of the slab was built 10cm thicker and very well controlled and a high dam that could have had fractures in the slab was built without problems
At the 196m high Karahnjukar Dam in Iceland the upper part of the left slab was built independently and in the central part similar recommendations that were recommended for Bakun were undertaken
and compressible elements were placed in the central part that mitigated the potential movements of the central slabs
Karahnjukar was built with basalt with high compressibility modules and its behaviour has been adequate
Mexico’s La Yesca and El Cajón dams were built with compacted rockfill with high densities and excellent compressibility modules greater than 100 Mpa
This set of dams suffered variations in the design but the general behaviour
is proof that by adapting rapid non-conventional measures
it was possible to build the slabs without problems of excessive breaks
the abutments of this 211m high dam were very steep but the rockfills were built with adequate specifications to obtain high capacities and low void ratios
Chaglla has performed well with no breakage of the main slab
During decades of dam construction with compacted rockfill
it has been concluded that it’s feasible to design and build this type of CFRD and ACRD with heights close to 300m
with the following recommendations in mind:

Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Brazilians are moving away from Catholicism. Today, fewer than 50 percent of Brazilians identify as Roman Catholic, down from 92 percent in 1970
the Catholic Church remains deeply enmeshed Brazil's economy and society
Among its many footholds is a little-known tradition called the Movimento das Capelinhas
or "small chapel movement." This phenomenon
which takes place in hundreds of cities and towns across Brazil
centers on the circulation among Catholic households of small sanctuaries containing a Virgin Mary statuette
Such systems appeal because they exchange a narrow focus on economic value (only money matters) for a broader definition of what has value to people
By circulating dear objects in a certain pattern
these collaborative networks distribute their benefits to all involved
and the "profit" goes well beyond the small economic bump communities may see
The small chapel movement forms part of a long history of Roman Catholic rituals involving sacred relics and statues sent out to tour the world's parishes
Brazil's moving Marys pay one-day "visits" to various parishioners' homes in a semi-formal process determined by neighbors
Most chapel groups include about 30 families
such that each family receives one visit a month
Local clergy oversee the Marys' progress around town
In doing their rounds, our research found
these peripatetic chapels do more than just physically circulate - their travels actually create profit and value for participants
The end result is a de facto local Catholic "economy," one based on shared values rather than money
Curitiba's system is well-coordinated by the church
with approximately 100 volunteer mensageiras (messengers) who steward an estimated 10,000 small chapels from household to household
Approximately 100 Marys circulate among local Catholics
overseen by about the same number of mensageiras
For participating communities in both cities, the effect of the moving chapels is to create an alternative economy
one based not on traditional capitalist values but on participation
Households make monetary donations to the Catholic Church for the honor of hosting a chapel
Some small capelinhas even come equipped with their own coin slot
Host families and community members see less tangible but equally valuable benefits from the traveling Marys
it's social status: Working as your neighborhood's representative of the church is a prestigious role
parishes and communities interconnected by the regular visitation of these small chapels
There is a spiritual value, too. For Catholics, Mary, as the mother of Jesus Christ
and recipients of the small chapels that house her feel blessed by their access to divinity
The Brazilian Catholic church carefully manages this aspect of the chapel visits, presenting them as a source of comfort. The Marys "move," says church doctrine, and in doing so sustain their devotees emotionally
The capelinhas often become a favored local symbol of their family group
transcending their religious significance to be
The church also takes to Facebook and to the pulpit to recognize the volunteers who help to circulate the chapels
Lauding participants in the small chapel movement gives them a special social status
or what we call "reputational value" - another benefit created by this alternative economy
The church actively promotes the social and reputational value of the Marys
the small chapels will be given new circulation routes as a welcome to new parishioners
Priests in Curitiba train and mentor the small chapel messengers
helping to ensure that the Marys circulate in ways that mutually benefit all participants
One type of value often translates into another
Spiritual value becomes economic whenever someone donates to a small chapel
is used to educate an apprentice priest or to introduce a new route for a small chapel

Had the Campos Novos dam failed during the rainy season, disaster may have followed
GIANT cracks have opened in one of the world’s tallest dams, just months after completion. The cracks appeared after a tunnel collapsed on 20 June beneath the 200-metre-high Campos Novos dam in southern Brazil, and the reservoir rapidly emptied. At one point, 4000 cubic metres of water (more than enough to fill an Olympic-size swimming pool) were rushing downstream every second towards a second dam on the river Canoas.
“If this had happened during the rainy season, and the two reservoirs had been full, water would likely have…

2019 2:59 AM ESTIn what has become an unending stream of huck(ing) – seemingly
to the point of nauseam – another kayaker
has reportedly broken the waterfall world record on Brazil’s Rio Sacre
the creepy German guy on Youtube whose footage can’t be confirmed (or completely denied) and Paul Gamache
Most of these cats have yet to file with Guinness
And we’ve yet to confirm whether or not Olivia will
one hell of a good boater and Pedro is one hell of a nice guy
Our only question: Will the record eventually eclipse the 200-foot mark
The following is from Jackson Kayak’s Ben Stookesberry
whose team was on a mission to set the record in South America this winter:
Brazilian kayaker and fellow Brazil World Record Attempt Expedition member Pedro Olivia shattered the existing world record (108 foot or 33 meter) with a 38
7 meter (127 foot) waterfall descent on a tributary to the Amazon on the Rio Sacre in Campos Novos
His 2.9 seconds of pure freefall sent Pedro rocketing into the pool at right around 70 miles per hour in his Jackson Kayak Rocker
Although people have certainly perished upon hitting a pool of water from such heights
gushing rivers of Central Brazil to produce the softest water landings on earth
This particular falls was nearly a football field in width
with approximately 5,000 cfs of crystal clear 70 degree rain water spilling over the lip
This meant that although Pedros boat went over vertical
he and his boat were swept and kept intact into a deep mist filled pool
Pedro resurfaced behind the falls were he was able to right himself with his hands on a conveniently located boulder bar
and I guess that is why it is aptly named Salto Belo or Beautiful Falls.”

When Pedro Oliva got to the edge of the Rio Sacre in central Brazil and looked at the big falls
there was no doubt in his heart that he would climb into his kayak and paddle over the edge ” all 127 feet of free-falling drop into the mist of the pool below
He and a team of kayakers from the United States and Mexico had already run eight big waterfalls
looking for one that would give them a world record for Ben Stookesberry’s latest extreme kayaking DVD
Pedro’s mother had called to say she had a dream where she saw him safely do it
excited,” the cinematographer and model from San Jose Dos Campos
where he and Stookesberry recently appeared on the “Today” show
Other side is ‘confianca.’ “
and Rafael Ortiz of Mexico City had flown into Brazil and met up with Oliva
a paddling pal of Stookesberry’s since they met at the 2007 World Freestyle Kayaking Championships in Canada
Stookesberry and his crew had recently made the second descent of the Indus River through the Rondu Gorge in northern Pakistan
and gone on to run the Menas River through India
They returned to Brazil to try to make a clean drop of the Anaconda
a 100-foot waterfall that Stookesberry had run last year
but not without being ejected from his boat
making his descent unsuccessful in the unwritten rules of kayaking
Kayakers don’t rely on Guinness World Records
instead keeping their own list of world records on blogs and in periodicals
Paul Gamache of Seattle held the top mark by running 108-foot Cascade Falls in British Columbia in 2008
Stookesberry wants to shift the focus on world-record waterfall runs from Canada
where there is so much unexplored potential in the Amazon Basin
“We were trying to push the sport beyond the spot where running tall waterfalls would result in some sort of fatality,” he said
“The myth that the height you can run a waterfall in a kayak has already been reached ” to break that myth and push that particular end of the sport forward.”
After remeasuring and running the Anaconda
Stookesberry’s crew knew they needed something bigger
where communities often post photos of local attractions
and when they got there heard of two others ” the 127-foot Salto Belo and one even higher downstream on the same Rio Sacre
after driving for hours through soybean fields with two local guides
drove their light SUV with their kayaks on top onto a raft floated by wooden barrels
and pulled it across the quarter-mile wide river by rope to the edge of the falls
They tied a climbing rope to a bag filled with rocks and lowered it to the bottom
then measured off 6-foot lengths as they pulled it up
It was 21 lengths plus 1 foot ” about the height of a 12-story building
“I was still pretty unconvinced I was going to make that descent,” said Stookesberry
I didn’t see myself being able to maintain a vertical angle going in
It was going to be 28 feet higher than anything else I had run in the past.”
but didn’t like the way the water went straight down
“I just thought we were going to look at a big beautiful waterfall,” he said
and right away he said he wanted to run it
Ben and I ” it’s a huge waterfall ” I think it was out of both our comfort ranges.”
picking out the tongue of green water Oliva would follow to the lip and to the spot in the pool below that had plenty of air in the water
vital to cushioning his 70-mph entry into the water
without so much churn that the water would hold him down to drown
“I stand close to the waterfall for 10 minutes,” Oliva said
‘What do you think?’ He say it’s a good idea for me to go
Oliva memorized every ripple and current he would follow
“Last year he looked at other drops that were world records as well,” Stookesberry said
“He only made the decision to run this one because he felt it was the perfect time
the coming together of a team he believed in
the feeling everything was coming together at the same moment
“Two days before he had talked to his mother
She was content he would go over the waterfall and he would be all right
There were so many things that came together
upside down with the boat parallel to the surface of the water
His paddle was sliced off by the boat deck
Oliva figures he churned in the pool for 5 to 10 seconds
then waited 10 more seconds for things to calm down
he felt a rock bar on his side and used it to pull himself upright in the boat
and was surprised to find himself behind a curtain of water
Oliva said it was the strangest experience of his life
“The sun was coming directly through the curtain,” Stookesberry said
“For a couple of seconds he was confused and thought he was in heaven for a second
He quickly realized he was behind the falls.”
and when he got out of his boat and walked along the rocks
He eventually walked out through the curtain of water to the shore of the pool
where Korbulic and one of the guides were waiting to help him
“He said that when he was thinking about what it would be like before he did it
cheering his face off,” Stookesberry translated
“But when it actually happened he was pretty calm
“Other than a couple of fist pumps and a couple high-fives
he was pretty calm about the whole thing.”
Korbulic said he believes that Oliva stayed in his boat
“I think he’s a genuine person and he’s not out to ” he wasn’t out to fool anybody,” he said
Stookesberry figures if you can’t enter the water vertically
so your spine will not be compressed by the shock
Highly aerated water is a must to cushion the blow
They are already planning to go back and look at the bigger falls downstream
Hucking big waterfalls is not Stookesberry’s main focus
He pores over Google Earth looking for remote rivers no one has run
Next year he plans to run the Sang Po in Tibet
going farther through the rocky gorge than the last expedition
Though they get financial help from gear companies
most of the money for these expeditions comes from their own sweat and savings
does cement work for a construction crew in Mount Shasta
worked construction at Lake Tahoe last summer and plans to go to nursing school
The kayaking world is split over running falls
with some excited over the “Wow!” factor
and others wanting to avoid being labeled as another Mountain Dew extreme sport
owner of kayak gear maker Immersion Research in Confluence
which sends teams of kayakers to unexplored territory
there is much more depth of interest in running a river in Pakistan that has never been run,” Weld said
all you can say (about running a waterfall) is

“I don’t want to belittle it,” Weld added
“He still has to go to the top of that waterfall and put the skirt on.”

Rescuers say that a South African man leading Stookesberry and Korbulic on a whitewater expedition in Central Africa was attacked by a crocodile and pulled from his kayak
The body of Hendri Coetzee has not been recovered following the Tuesday morning attack on the Lukuga River
JOHANNESBURG (AP) -- An acclaimed outdoorsman who wrote movingly about testing himself against nature is presumed dead after a crocodile snatched him from his kayak while he led an American expedition from the source of the White Nile into the heart of Congo
Two Americans being guided by 35-year-old South African Hendrik Coetzee on the grueling trip could only watch in horror
They paddled unharmed to safety after the Tuesday morning attack on the Lukuga River in Congo
which runs development projects in the Central African nation
helped evacuate the Americans to a nearby town
the organization's regional director in Congo
Coetzee's body has not been recovered
The stretch of river where the trio was traveling is notoriously dangerous because of its whitewater
and the high density of crocodiles and hippos
that chronicled the trip sponsored by the Eddie Bauer clothing and outdoor equipment company
Coetzee wrote about the thrill of taking to uncharted waters
including stretches that might soon disappear due to planned dams
He also described sometimes facing suspicion from military and other officials
warm drops trashed at our little selves and a pair of goats
we stood precariously on an unknown slope deep in the heart of Africa
I would never live a better day," wrote Coetzee
"He was the bravest guy I've ever known," Kruger said
He was very calculated and set the bar high for future exploration in Africa."
said they were vacationing in Costa Rica when they got an e-mail from their son saying he was safe
"You just can't even think how terrible that is," Mary Korbulic said of the crocodile attack
They had been following the expedition through blog postings
and a tracking device activated every few days
and were becoming concerned that there were no new postings when they got the e-mail from their son
"All of us with loved ones engaged in extreme risk as a lifestyle and vocation live in dread of getting bad news
but at the same time we are wildly proud of our sons for their courage and determination to be explorers in a time when most people think terrestrial
and environmental exploration is over," they said in an e-mail
but will miss his presence on earth and in the life of our son."
The expedition was the latest in a string that Stooksberry and Korbulic have mounted exploring remote and dangerous rivers
In recent years they have been in the Himalayas
Coetzee wasn't just interested in the adrenaline rush
"He also had a fantastic social conscience," he said
explaining that Coetzee ran kayak trips for underprivileged kids in Sudan
"He was one of those people that would look after others not only in a physical sense but also nurture them spiritually and mentally."
from the White Nile and Congo rivers into Congo
were documenting unexplored whitewater and development projects in the region
The two Americans -- Ben Stookesberry and Chris Korbulic -- are currently in Congo but expect to return home to the U.S
Coetzee had been living in Uganda at the time of the expedition
One of the Americans recounted on his blog how Coetzee has warned them about the dangers of the trip
including "three-ton hippos that will bite you in half."
"Stay off the banks because the crocs are having a bake and might fancy you for lunch
Any questions?" the blog quoted Coetzee as saying
Deadly hippo and crocodile attacks on humans are not uncommon in Africa
said parks authorities there are reluctant to give out numbers for fear of scaring away tourists
"They are the predators of the water," Rodrigues said of the crocodiles
Coetzee discussed the importance of trusting instincts and the group's only rule -- "nobody panic."
In Coetzee's most recent entry dated Nov
he wrote: "As I licked my dry lips and carefully checked that my spray deck was on properly
I had the feeling I might be doing something I should not
I pushed through the doubt and when I finally shot out the bottom of the rapid I was happy I did
"Dwarfed by lush green mountains rising up to 3,000 feet above us
we were drawn in ever deeper with a constant eye on the banks for trouble," he wrote
