Site design by GRIN tech HYANNIS – Carlos Barbosa came to the Cape from Brazil in 1987 and following the track so many immigrants take he worked hard at any job he could find – dishwasher he went to Nantucket to paint houses with his brother With the building boom of the early 2000s fueling their business they shifted from painting to lining up small independent companies to do finish work on the island Barbosa provides Cape workers with jobs and Nantucket construction companies with a trusted labor force serving on the boards of Community Action Committee of Cape Cod which helps low-income families achieve self sufficiency which provides round-the-clock care for people with head injuries Barbosa’s experience has convinced him that working hard doing business by the book and giving back are ways to overcome the hurdles of suspicion and doubt that immigrants face and “People see you as different because you came from someplace else,” he says that makes all of us look great in front of the Cape Cod community.” What is the most important thing your business does which is kind of like a middleman between construction companies and labor We bill jobs with the construction companies for work like painting carpentry and then we hire companies we trust to provide the people to do the job Many are Brazilian companies that have four or five guys working for them Some of these people used to work for us and they formed their own companies we’re one of the bigger companies on Nantucket providing this kind of service I had a restaurant called Copacabana in Hyannis between 1994 and 1997 was on Nantucket working as a cafeteria person Then he decided to start doing some painting We started doing painting for a condominium complex as a way to get work Then the developer started building houses out there and so we started doing a lot of work for that company My brother and I and three more were the painters It was the construction boom of the early 2000s that caused us to hire people to do the work for us but we did everything to start this business The business today has only three employees My brother is the president and I am the treasurer But we have over 40 people working on the island as subcontractors and by May We rent two apartments right now year-round so we can supply some housing but most of the people take the Hy-Line Cruises boat back and forth every day How has the market changed since your business started It was booming before the economic crisis in 2008 we started to see more permits coming up and we expanded our business into hiring subcontractors Plastering has become a big business over the past three years It’s more expensive but people on Nantucket like it and it’s what they do in their homes The cash flow in the painting business is kind of slow So we manage to make the two businesses work side by side and make sure people get paid every week What are your plans for your business’ future The gross income last year was $1.8 million We take a 25 percent maximum of that business Our idea is to expand by buying houses here on the Cape renovating them ourselves and putting them back on the market using the same model of contracting out the work put some work into them and then sell them for $250,000 to $350.000 so they would be affordable for working people the Brazilian immigrants and the American people The people in the Brazilian community buy a lot of condos because they’re cheaper and when you have a father working two jobs you don’t have time to shovel and pick up the yard What’s your most memorable moment with this business We had a company working for us at the Jared Coffin House on Nantucket and a kid was moving a ladder from one point to another He didn’t touch the wire but the electricity traveled to the ladder and the kid went down long time ago and he’s OK but it was very scary What advice do you have for someone starting out in business The painting business is tricky because so many people … I hate to say this but it’s good for the homeowner to understand Get the certificate of insurance and then call the insurance company to really be sure If there is an accident in your house and the company doesn’t have insurance The guy who has nothing is going to underbid me easily What’s the biggest challenge about having a business on Cape Cod but we have to prove that just because we speak broken English does not mean we can’t do the work The second challenge is to have your laborers be conscientious the whole time We want to be sure that people know we are reliable I don’t want to put anyone into someone’s $5 million house who would take a lollipop from them  What’s the best thing about having a business on Cape Cod This place gives you a chance to grow and there are good people here and on Nantucket that we can rely on —Follow Lorelei Stevens on Twitter: @CCTLorelei Chef Carlos Barbosa shapes loaves at the Newlight Breadworks kitchen in Calverton Baker Isabelle Saint-Marie pulls freshly baked loaves out of the oven Head baker Carlos Barbosa and founder and CEO Stephen Robinson with some of their famous bread Last March as lockdowns drove everyone inside and insane Stephen Robinson got really into sourdough baking he’s managed to turn his hobby into a rapidly expanding business that now produces over 14 different bread products and lists Topping Rose House Robinson is the founder and CEO of Newlight Breadworks The company rebranded on May 25 of this year as Hampton Sourdough is both too generic to trademark and slightly inaccurate — although all their breads have some sourdough component they bake everything from Japanese milk bread to brioche is where Robinson’s first client is located: Babinski’s Farm Stand Robinson was baking loaves in his in-laws’ kitchen and hand-delivering them he had his mother ship him a starter from the West Coast I latched on to sourdough baking to bide the time,” Robinson said in a recent phone interview “It’s something that I had been doing throughout my life intermittently with my mom being the inspiration behind that I grew up [on] the West Coast and so sourdough is very much part of the culinary fabric [there] “When I noticed the zeitgeist around sourdough kind of reaching a crescendo during COVID maybe there’s an opportunity to perhaps monetize some of the great bread that I was producing in my in-laws’ home kitchen,” he added Robinson got an email from the executive chef at Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton His breads passed the taste test and Topping Rose put in a big order for the Fourth of July whose background is in media and advertising realized he had something big on his hands He began reaching out to potential partners to see if he could turn sourdough into dough “[It] turned out there was kind of a market gap that existed out here for high-end breads where people were really open to trying us out,” Robinson noted Although it hasn’t been all smooth sailing Newlight Breadworks has managed to grow rapidly and organically They first moved to the East End Food Institute on the Stony Brook Southampton campus and then to Stony Brook University’s Food Business Incubator “We have a small 600-square-foot room there where we installed a four-deck oven and a couple of large spiral dough mixers,” Robinson said we have all the basic things that we need to scale but we’re starting to reach that upper threshold for what we’re able to achieve within that room there’ll be a moment where we will need to venture out onto our own and get our own production facility.” Robinson attributed much of Newlight Breadworks’ success to its head baker has a unique background in baking and fine dining He worked at Dominique Ansel (inventors of the cronut) and then was in charge of sourdough at Manhatta part of the Union Square Hospitality Group in Lower Manhattan although their numbers keep growing (as does Robinson’s family — he became a father this June) Newlight Breadworks can put out anywhere from 800 to 1,500 units a day the bakery was producing 2,000 units a day across all products Part of what confers super-premium status onto the breads is the amount of time involved — from the first rise to the final pull out of the oven the breads take around three days to produce “There’s no shortcut for the time that we infuse into the product itself,” Robinson explained “The time allows for greater complexity of flavor.” Newlight Breadworks also produces hamburger and hot dog buns and breads baked in Pullmans — standard sandwich-style loaf pans so named because they resemble Pullman railroad cars “I love each of those ones in no particular order I think each one of them has their time and place for use The milk bread is really unique; it’s like a Japanese-style milk bread that we’re able to produce The deli rye is a beautiful piece of rye bread That’s kind of a cross between Carlos’s roots working for a Danish baker in his past and also my roots: My family And then the multigrain is super hearty and just fantastic.” The definition of sourdough is essentially bread made using a sourdough starter a fermented leaven that a baker cultivates and perpetuates across time and generations of loaves Sourdough yeast works more slowly than commercial active-dry yeast Robinson’s mother has been a hobbyist baker for years and he thinks her starter came from a class taught by Seattle-based chef Tom Douglas Robinson’s favorite kind of bread is incorporated into all his products “One thing that Carlos has made me realize is that sourdough is just yet another option for leavening bread It doesn’t always have to be the exclusive leavening agent in a dough,” Robinson explained “It could work in tandem with commercial yeast and things but it does always add a bit of lactic flavor It’s definitely a nice addition from a complexity standpoint.” You can find Newlight Breadworks’ products at farm stands and supermarkets across the East End as well as at a few locations on the North Fork and the business is beginning to creep city-ward as well Newlight Breadworks consistently donates fresh-baked bread to Springs Food Pantry and Montauk Food Pantry as well as giving intermittent donations to other charity organizations the bakery sent over baked goods to an auction for the Southampton Fresh Air Home and in the past has donated to fundraisers for the Southampton Animal Shelter it seems Newlight Breadworks’ fortunes will continue to rise like a freshly kneaded sourdough boule More information about Newlight Breadworks can be connection to the death of Efrain Ibarra-Barcenas The Tampa Bay Times, citing court records, reported Thursday that deputies quietly arrested the first suspect in the case, 20-year-old Christian Segura-Alvarez, on April 21. That was six days after Ibarra-Barcenas’ body was discovered burning in a field on the 1100 block of Will Scarlett Avenue — less than a mile from the home he shared with his wife. Ibarra-Barcenas was found with a knife still protruding from his back and what appeared to be tape on his right arm and a belt around his ankles, according to Segura-Alvarez’s arrest affidavit and two search warrant affidavits filed in the case. Segura-Alvarez’s arrest affidavit showed he implicated Almaraz-Barbosa in the killing, but the Times did not name Almaraz-Barbosa in Thursday’s story because the Sheriff’s Office did not confirm he was a suspect. Two of those men, Segura-Alvarez and Almaraz-Barbosa, told detectives they were drinking at the 10th Avenue house with Ibarra-Barcenas from about 6 to 9 p.m. April 14 and that Ibarra-Barcenas said he wanted to go to a bar or nightclub, then left alone in his white 2014 Chevy Silverado, the affidavits state. Mercedes Ibarra said her husband’s truck and phone were not at the house. Detectives pinged the phone and saw it was near the Newberry Road exit off Interstate 75 in the Gainesville area. A license plate reader showed Ibarra-Barcenas’ pickup was in that area around 6:18 a.m. April 15. The next day, investigators found Ibarra-Barcenas’ phone in the same area. Detectives found surveillance video from the Fort Lonesome Grocery on State Road 674 that showed the Chevy pull up to the gas pumps at 2:35 a.m. Two men who did not appear to be Ibarra-Barcenas were in the truck, and the driver got out briefly before reentering and driving away. Surveillance video from the Rebel convenience store on U.S. 301 in Riverview showed the truck there from 2:54 a.m. to 3 a.m. A man who deputies now say was Almaraz-Barbosa got out of the driver’s seat, purchased a phone charger with cash and left. On April 17, the Sheriff’s Office released a photo of the man in the Rebel store video, calling him a person of interest in the case. Detectives got a search warrant for the 10th Avenue home, and while the search was underway, Segura-Alvarez arrived and was shown the video of the man at the Rebel store, according to the arrest affidavit. He became “visibly upset” and asked to be interviewed elsewhere, the affidavits state. During the interview, Segura-Alvarez said he witnessed Almaraz-Barbosa kill Ibarra-Barcenas and bind him with tape. Segura-Alvarez said he helped load Ibarra-Barcenas’ body into his pickup truck and take it to the field where, according to Segura-Alvarez, the other man lit the body on fire. Efrain Ibarra-Barcenas' online obituary on nationalcremation.com. [ nationalcremation.com ]Segura-Alvarez also admitted to hitting Ibarra-Barcenas at least three times in the stomach and that Almaraz-Barbosa hit and kicked him multiple times. The court documents do not include information about a suspected motive. The Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that the medical examiner had not yet provided a cause of death for Ibarra-Barcenas. Segura-Alvarez was being held in a Hillsborough County jail on charges of second-degree murder with a firearm and evidence tampering. His bail is set at $600,000. Almaraz-Barbosa also faces charges of evidence tampering and grand theft of a motor vehicle. “While we believe this to be an isolated incident, this man clearly has no regard for human life, and we are committed to closing this case with his arrest,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said Friday in a prepared statement. “I urge anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts to come forward and help us to bring this victim’s family the closure they deserve.” Tony MarreroMorning Editor and Justice Reporter according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Carlos Almaraz-Barbosa, 26, was taken into custody in Houston, Texas, in connection to the death of 44-year-old Efrain Ibarra-Barcenas the Sheriff’s Office said in a Thursday news release was arrested by Hillsborough deputies April 21 is pictured in a Hillsborough County booking photo taken on April 21 when he was arrested on charges of second-degree murder with a firearm and evidence tampering in connection to the death of Efrain Ibarra-Barcenas [ Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office ]According to previous reporting by the Tampa Bay Times Ibarra-Barcenas had been stabbed in the back with a knife that was still in his body when he was found He also had a belt around his ankles and what appeared to be tape on his right arm told investigators he had gone to a home in the 1200 block of 10th Avenue Southeast with some men he’d worked with that day to have drinks The home was about a mile north of where his body was found Two of the men drinking with Ibarra-Barcenas the night of April 14 were Segura-Alvarez and Almaraz-Barbosa According to court documents filed in the case they told detectives Ibarra-Barcenas left alone around 9 p.m after saying he wanted to go to a bar or nightclub Authorities pinged Ibarra-Barcenas’ phone and learned it was in the Gainesville area near the Newberry Road exit off Interstate 75 His phone was found in that area the following day Detectives located surveillance video of Ibarra-Barcenas’ 2014 white Chevy Silverado at the Fort Lonesome Grocery on State Road 674 and Rebel convenience store on U.S 301 in Riverview during the early morning hours of April 15 In the first video, two men who officials said did not appear to be Ibarra-Barcenas were seen. The Sheriff’s Office released a still from the second video on April 17, calling the man pictured a person of interest in the case. While searching the home on 10th Avenue, Segura-Alvarez arrived. According to his arrest affidavit and search warrant affidavits, investigators showed him the video of the man at the Rebel store and he became “visibly upset.” Segura-Alvarez told detectives he saw Almaraz-Barbosa kill Ibarra-Barcenas, then he helped Almaraz-Barbosa put the body into his truck and drive it to the Ruskin field. He said Almaraz-Barbosa then lit Ibarra-Barcenas’ body on fire. NEW SMYRNA BEACH-- Carlos Barbosa was still struggling to catch his breath minutes after his 5-Star Conference title win, but that did not stop him from looking ahead. “I've been at Pine Ridge since I was a freshman,” the hulking 220-pounder said after scoring a 7-2 decision over University's Omar Siller. “I love the school, and I love the people there. I hope I can make it to state, that way I can start a tradition because we haven't had a state qualifier in a long time.” While Barbosa used Saturday's conference meet at New Smyrna Beach High School as another stepping stone toward building a tradition, Flagler Palm Coast used it to show that it was the area's dominant team. The Bulldogs placed first with 228 points, followed by University (162.5), DeLand (143), New Smyrna Beach (85.5), Atlantic (67), Deltona (49), Seabreeze (48) and Pine Ridge (37). “This feels great,” FPC's Alfred Shavers, who won the 120-pound weight class by pinning DeLand's Logan Wishart, said. “I knew we were going to come in and win this. We have a much better team than last year, and we have been working so much harder this season.” University heavyweight Jacob Dillpaine closed out the meet with a 9-3 decision over NSB's Brandon Martin. “I feel like our team did great,” Dillpaine said. “We had a great amount of setbacks with some injuries and some guys that were not eligible. So, I think taking second place was great for missing some key guys like we were today.” University also opened the championship rounds of the meet with a win when Tyler Garcia was able to defeat NSB's Danny Knighton via pin (3:24) in the 106-pound weight class. At 113, FPC's Jake Kosachiner defeated DeLand's Lucas Ruiz via pin (5:18). Shavers won at 120, and Evyn Insalaco defeated Seabreeze's Michael decision (11-9) at 126. At 132, Kaz Maia defeated Deltona's Alex Aguayo via pin (1:43), and at 138, Eric Rosso defeated University's Clint Pierce via pin (3:08). The Bulldogs streak finally ended at 145 when NSB's Zach McCormick picked up his 107th career win with a 4-2 decision over DeLand's Justin Folsom. After coming up short in previous years, McCormick said being able to call himself the conference champion felt “amazing.” FPC's Korey Bryl won a 3-1 decision over DeLand's Daniel Baker at 152, and at 160 FPC's Jackson Trivett won an 11-6 decision over DeLand's Miguel Hernandez. University's Nick Shinault won the 170-pound class with a 10-9 decision over FPC's Justin Boyle, and University's Ruben Lara picked up his 100th win and the 182-pound title with an 11-6 decision over DeLand's Sean Ponder. At 195, University's Parker Moore won a 7-3 decision over FPC's Jonathan Muniz. Score: Flagler Palm Coast 228, University 162.5, DeLand 143, New Smyrna Beach 85.5, Atlantic 67, Deltona 49, Seabreeze 48, Pine Ridge 37. Both teams were evenly matched and had their fair share of chances. Leandro Lino came close to scoring in the third minute when goalkeeper Tiago threw a long ball his way. It was Sacon and Marcel who then came close in the next few minutes for Magnus but Carlos Barbosa goalkeeper Giancarlo ‘Wolverine’ Ramos made himself large to ensure his goal was not breached. Even crowd favourite Falcao’s attempt at goal in the 17th minute failed to produce the goods for Magnus. In the last few minutes of the first half, it was Marquinhos Xavier’s Barbosa that had their fair share of chances. Captain Valdin and Douglinas both came close, and the side even hit the frame of the goal seconds before the half-time whistle. However, the half ended with a 0-0 score-line. Carlos Barbosa were impressive in moving the ball between tight spaces, but the Magnus goal seemed almost impenetrable, and eventually it was Magnus who got the first goal. Rodrigo hit his shot inches wide shortly after the second-half began but it wasn’t to prove costly as top scorer of the competition, Leandro Lino scored in the 23rd minute. Carlos Barbosa hit the post again when Marlon struck the ball hard in the 28th minute. Coach Marquinhos was forced to introduce Bruno Souza as the power player in the dying stages of the game, but the player, who was already on a yellow card made another foul to keep Magnus from scoring and was sent off. With a one-man advantage, Magnus’ Marcel scored two minutes before the final whistle to seal his side’s victory. Magnus coach Ricardo Di Izeppe said after the game, “It was a repeat of last edition’s final and we know Carlos Barbosa very well from Brazil. I think it was a really good overall performance from our team in today. We were good at the back and good at the attack as well. We’re very happy with the win. We would also like to thank the organisers for a great tournament and the people of Thailand for showing kindness and love throughout our stay here”. Earlier, Barca Lassa defeated PTT Bluewave Chonburi 12-2 to secure the third position in the competition.
