The Show is exploring architectural elements from Phoenix’s iconic resort past that still exist
The Casa Blanca Inn was built near Chaparral Road and 66th Street in Scottsdale about 100 years ago
The property began as the winter home of the Kellogg family before its eventual transformation into a Moroccan-themed resort
it was converted into a collection of private luxury residences built on the site by architect George Christensen
a longtime realtor in the Valley who specializes in architecturally unique properties
to walk around the grounds of the former Casa Blanca Inn
SCOTT JARSON: This is just such a special property
He did a lot of really fabulous adobe homes in and around the area
What you're seeing here with the Camelback Mountain backdrop is the original house for the Kellogg family that was built in the 1920s
So if you think oasis in the desert we're in this beautiful green space
So they lived a really gracious winter getaway life
here like a lot of others who came from the Midwest for health and just get away from the snow and to kind of reset their lives
this property sold to Borg Warner Corporation
and the Borg family used it as a winter getaway
And what kind of desert hijinks they might get up to
They were the first ones to introduce this Moroccan theme
so maybe the "Casablanca" movie had a little something to do with it
but they're the ones that named it Casa Blanca
with this onion dome that just looks so sort of Moroccan-influenced
and it sold into a corporation that ran it as a resort
got incorporated into the more resort lifestyle that you'll find here
has something that was seen a lot in these desert resorts
You can see this sort of glass screen that we're looking at here
This was a windbreak that would surround the pool in those days
dust storms and desert winds from disturbing people as they sat
And what I love about it is that in this exact location
there's several really great print ads from the 1950s that show models and great sort of Arizona dresses right at this very location
The original structures really celebrated and not demolished
they brought in a really world-class architect
This is how you would enter it as a resort
there's this rectangular building castellated on top
Looks like it just came out of out of Morocco with this beautiful
white onion dome on top that centered right over what was called the Sultan's Table restaurant
I can remember going with my family several times
and it always felt like you were taking a journey someplace else just to go have dinner
because if you manage it through the eyes of a 8-
you're being able to be brought to another world
You're also able to connect with a piece of Arizona that — and see it through the eyes of people who visit here
And so to be able to come to the Sultan's Table to have a family dinner on a Sunday
And especially as these resorts started to stay open in the summer — most of them closed when the heat came on
you could get those shoulder months and come in here
the island’s fertile volcanic soil allowing plants to flourish out of all expected proportion — everything here just seems to bloom bigger and brighter — and Quinta da Casa Branca has one of the best

Andrew Uihlein took over the helm of Casa Branca in Los Angeles three years ago to help grow the next chapter of his mother’s iconic brand
“It’s been an interesting process to figure out how do we ‘distill Alessandra’ for a new generation,” says Andrew

“It’s also been interesting learning how we work together as a family.”
who says that she and Andrew have known each other since they were 3 years old
“I was in New York working for an auction house and Andrew was working for U-Line when Alessandra had me sourcing items for her brand
she hired me full-time to do all the Casa Branca collaborations
I was working closely with the people she hired in L.A
to do her patterns and textiles,” says Georgia
adding that it was her idea to bring in Andrew as President as he was finishing his MBA at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Business in 2018
“And I pretended to be just that person,” laughs Andrew
“I came on board and was just really compelled to take Alessandra’s massive volume of ideas and build them into a collection.”
He says that while Casa Branca’s Chicago showroom is located on the Gold Coast
the family’s ties to the North Shore remain enduring
“Alessandra’s entry way to the United States was through Barat College
and it was through Barat College that in 1978 she met my father
who was born in Lake Bluff and went to Lake Forest Country Day School,” Andrew explains
we could not be happier about this Chicago location
Even if it doesn’t make sense on paper to someone who was raised in London or New York
there’s no shortage of taste on the North Shore and Chicago
and we’re going through another design renaissance in the city.”

Andrew says he considers himself to be the third generation to join the family business
we talked about what things are going to be like in 10 years with these very clean
modern spaces with lots of white and almost an aversion of color and pattern
A big part of Casa Branca is championing color and making people feel more comfortable using pattern and color,” Andrew explains
“We are going through a period right now where people want a modern apartment with a modern kitchen but that doesn’t translate into the warmest experience
people are more familiar with having your home as a social center
We’re almost a bridge between generations and a bridge between aesthetic styles.”
This modern take on Branca empowers customers to fill their homes with designs and pieces that are more personalized
people are infusing personal touches into their homes
Design is a reflection of themselves but it’s also aspirational,” adds Andrew
“That aspirational approach to living is richer when it’s paired with interiors and objects that are more personal and filled with color.”

with over $56,000 granted to enhance its facilities and meet increasing demand from avid golfers
Management from Casa Blanca Golf Course presented their plans before the Commissioners Court
aiming to use the funds for projects like adding sod and replacing worn-out equipment
General Manager Oscar Urdiales highlighted the course’s success
“We’re growing faster than we can keep up with
Another banquet area and a larger meeting room for corporate events would definitely help us out.”
Owned by Webb County and operated by Touch Stone Golf
Casa Blanca Golf Course has exceeded expectations under their management
Commissioner John Galo of Precinct 3 noted their financial progress
“They’re $150,000 ahead compared to last year over just three months,” Galo remarked
We’re asking questions such as if they can identify where their money is coming in
I was asking questions about the food items
and I think it’s probably just not coded correctly.”
With popularity comes the need for additional investments
such as increasing the number of golf carts from 80 to 100
Galo also addressed upcoming challenges due to highway expansion impacting the course’s layout
“We’re going to be redesigning the holes on that side
and then making some clubhouse improvement and parking lot improvements because we’re already out of parking,” Galo explained
“We’re going to need a bigger barn for all the carts that we have
I think you heard the discussion today that we’re already booked for the rest of the year.”
Architects are on board to realize these improvements
with management scheduled to update the Commissioners Court quarterly on progress and financial performance

which attracted its share of luminaries in the 1950s and ’60s

Former Kernersville residents have opened Casa Blanca Mexican Cuisine in the North Summit Square shopping center anchored by Sam’s Club
is owned by Sergio Panuco and managed by his 22-year-old son
Christian Panuco said he grew up in Kernersville
“I had graduated high school and started working
and my dad asked me if I wanted to try to open up a restaurant with him,” Christian Panuco said
He said he spent some time working in his dad’s restaurant to learn the business
Then they found this spot – the original location of the former Mozzarella Fellas – and spent about a year renovating it
“We did pretty much everything ourselves.”
The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner six days a week and serves most of the usual Mexican American dishes
Appetizers include chori papas ($9) – loaded fries with chorizo sausage and birria fries with braised beef ($12)
It also sells the popular quesabirrias ($12 for three)
There’s a handful of nachos plates and salads with chicken
plus a mixed-seafood version called fajitas del mar ($22) with shrimp
Street tacos ($13 for three) are available with birria meat
Other seafood dishes include mango shrimp ($17) and tilapia with creamy chipotle sauce ($13)
and pollo Feliz ($13) with grilled pineapple
Steak entrees include several 10-ounce T-bone dishes
There are a handful of vegetarian entrees for $11
or one chile relleno and one taco with rice and beans
There also are more than a dozen lunch specials for $8
Casa Blanca is in the process of obtaining ABC permits
at which point it will sell beer and such liquor drinks as margaritas

In Business of Home’s series Shop Talk, we chat with owners of home furnishings stores across the country to hear about their hard-won lessons and challenges, big and small. This week, we spoke with Andrew Uihlein, the president of designer Alessandra Branca’s company Casa Branca
the Italian-born Branca has enjoyed three decades of an illustrious career
with widely published projects and a successful line of wallcoverings and fabrics
she considered closing her business and retiring
she’s operating two new stores in the Palm Beach area
including a 4,000-square-foot showroom in West Palm Beach that opened last month
No one is more awed and less surprised than her son
who joined the company in 2019 after getting his MBA
he discusses working across several cities
retooling the store’s design for curb appeal and serving the considerable Palm Beach design community
and I opened our store in Palm Beach and ran it every day at the beginning
sourcing and a good amount of working in the store and in our showroom
So she took this space in the entrance to the Everglades Club—which is designed by Addison Mizner
the person who kind of planned the town of Palm Beach—as an office
“Can we just have one wall in the space to show the fabrics and wallpapers?” Within a couple of weeks
everyone walking by was asking to buy everything we had
We fast-tracked something that we didn’t think we were going to do for two or three years after launching
We thought we were going to be launching this line exclusively through showrooms
with whatever we could get from our own sources within the United States
and with all of the vendors of porcelain and ceramics in France and Italy who Alessandra hasbeen building relationships with for over 30 years
[we thought] this is going to be an appointment-only showroom
That quickly morphed into being open every day from 10 a.m
And we just opened our new showroom in West Palm Beach in a really cool
newly developed stretch of what used to be warehouses that have been converted into galleries
it has a pretty incredible community of small-business owners
It’s a seasonal community that has adapted to a massive influx of people and more of a year-round mentality
There’s also a lifestyle and an aesthetic here that is very design-forward
We tailored our design of the store to be beachy but sophisticated
choosing fabrics that have lots of white in the background but are still floral and colorful
choosing porcelains and ceramics that work well in bright homes
Alessandra painted the walls a deep chocolate brown
with accents of green and lots of white shelving
and that was a bit more what people were expecting and certainly increased the curb appeal for people walking by
All of these iterations are in reaction to how people are experiencing the space and what they are comfortable with
You sometimes have to pay attention to the way that we’ve been trained to shop and navigate a store
A space that looks like a living room is great for an interior designer; it’s not great for someone coming in to know what they can buy and feeling comfortable taking things off a shelf
well … I’m very aware of the fact that I don’t think I would have this opportunity; certainly
it would be very difficult to build this kind of trust quickly with a designer of this level
I feel very lucky to be in a position to take my approach and my skills and my own passion for working with creatives and try to build something around that
I’m just very lucky to work with someone so talented

"Linens are Irish and Belgian linens that are hand screen-printed in the United States,” Uihlein said
“Alessandra pulls her designs from her vintage archives
and then our Casa Branca team actually crafts the individual items,” he said
“Here in Palm Beach the first collection is very much about color
It’s about pattern and about having fun with designs,” Uihlein said
“Alessandra has designed a collection you can mix and match across the different colorways.”
Sofas are made-to-order with clients and their decorators selecting fabrics
Many are vintage finds or antiques from estate sales and auctions from around the globe that have been upholstered with Casa Branca’s fabrics
The fabric collection includes a variety of designs such as Cestino

A pair of Italian carved wood table lamps from the 1970s by Jansen is $5,500. A $4,300 handblown Belgian crystal table lamp designed by Branca can be filled with water and food dyes to create any color
“Our core customer is decorators and design enthusiasts
people who are really enthusiastic about design and about these types of objects,” Uihlein said
“It’s not just people purchasing new homes; it is people purchasing new homes and being really excited about it
“The room will be changing as items are sold from the floor,” Uihlein said
“Many of the porcelains can be ordered again; but to be honest
they are all handmade and all unique and made to specifications we have decided with these artisans
It is going to be a “living” room,” Uihlein said

Tx (KGNS) - The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department responds to possible alligators spotted in or near Lake Casa Blanca
KGNS received calls regarding possible alligator sightings at the lake
they say they do not currently conduct alligator surveys in or near the lake
geographically the area is within the known and expected range of the American alligator
so it would not be unusual or unexpected for alligators to inhabit appropriate habitat
They go on to say that “Alligators in an area do not in and of themselves constitute a concern for human safety
Feeding of alligators by humans can cause problems
TPWD generally allows gators to exist in areas of human habitation unless there is a specific circumstance that would warrant their removal.”
KGNS has not independently confirmed the claims
