Print Chef Bryant Ng and his wife
Rising costs and setbacks such as entertainment-industry strikes and ongoing fires factored into their decision to close
one of the most singular Asian restaurants in Los Angeles will close after nearly a decade in operation
Cassia — home of “sunbathing prawns,” bowls of creamy laksa and clay-oven flatbreads from chef Bryant Ng — will serve its blend of Chinese
Singaporean and Vietnamese dishes with French-brasserie flair until its final night on Feb
In a statement sent to The Times, owners Ng, Kim Luu-Ng, Zoe Nathan, Josh Loeb and Colby Goff cited a range of industry difficulties and occurrences that led to their decision: rising operational costs, sustained diminished business from the 2023 entertainment-industry strikes and
the city’s wildfires that destroyed thousands of lives
Customers enter Cassia in 2021
(Jason Armond / Los Angeles Times) “We are not unique
but it’s been a challenge for sure,” the statement read
these circumstances have rendered us unable to continue to operate
we want to extend our deepest sympathies to everyone who has lost their homes or been affected by the recent destruction
It’s an unprecedented event that will reshape our city and the lives of so many people we know and care about for years to come.”
According to Ng the fires greatly hastened the owners’ decision to close
though the question of whether the restaurant could sustain was in consideration for the last year
occurred during the 2023 entertainment strikes
when their previously consistent business began to dip; in 2024
they tend to shift significantly and quickly in either direction,” Ng said in an email
it’s a hard hit because of all our operations
The fires really shortened our financial runway since many of our guests live in areas impacted by the recent fires
My heart goes out to them because of the livelihoods and homes that were lost.”
Food
Pot-au-feu is at the heart of the French kitchen; more than a beef soup
it is the enduring symbol of hearth and home
Ng drew from his haute culinary experience as well as those of his family and the Vietnamese heritage of his wife
a Cantonese-Polynesian restaurant in Culver City in the 1950s
while his parents ran Wok Way Chinese restaurant in Northridge in the 1980s and ‘90s
Ng wove all of this and more into his white pepper crab
That flavorful cultural melting pot, as well as Ng’s California background and perspective, is just one of a few reasons that L.A. Times Food’s general manager, Lauria Ochoa, tapped Cassia as the 2019 Gold Award winner
“I love that Cassia’s food isn’t just Vietnamese or Asian
but Southern Californian,” she said at the time
“It embodies one of the big ideas behind the award — ‘expanding the notion of Southern California cooking.’ Fish sauce can be as important to the cuisine of Los Angeles as olive oil.”
In 2015, former L.A. Times Food critic Jonathan Gold wrote that “Ng
is claiming the essence of French cooking as his own; colonizing the colonizers.”
Cassia appeared on the L.A. Times 101 Best Restaurants list many times, including the most recent 2024 guide, where Times Food columnist Jenn Harris wrote that “Ng has perfected his syncretic style of cooking, and every plate feels immensely personal.” It was named a best new restaurant by Bon Appétit, GQ and LA Weekly.
Before opening Cassia, Ng served as an opening chef at Pizzeria Mozza and helmed downtown Southeast Asian restaurant the Spice Table. In 2012, he was named one of Food & Wine’s best new chefs in the country.
Ng and Luu-Ng plan to open a new Chinese American restaurant called Jade Rabbit in Santa Monica that will feature more of a quick-and-casual format. The restaurant, Ng said, is slated for a spring opening.
As part of Food Bowl, May’s monthlong festival of food, dining and sustainability, the Los Angeles Times is presenting the third annual Gold Award to Bryant Ng and Kim Luu-Ng of Cassia.
“We will celebrate Chinese-American food,” Ng previously told The Times, “which is a unique cross-pollination of Chinese and American cuisines built out of necessity, hard work, creativity, perseverance and entrepreneurship of Chinese American immigrants.”
Meanwhile, the Rustic Canyon Family will continue to operate its restaurants across L.A. and in Ojai, including Birdie G’s, Rustic Canyon, Sweet Rose Creamery, Milo + Olive, Huckleberry Bakery & Cafe, the Dutchess and the Cassia-adjacent Ester’s Wine Shop & Bar.
Stephanie Breijo is a reporter for the Food section and the author of its weekly news column. Previously, she served as the restaurants and bars editor for Time Out Los Angeles, and prior to that, the award-winning food editor of Richmond magazine in Richmond, Va. Born and primarily raised in Los Angeles, she believes L.A. to be the finest food city in the country and might be biased on that count but doesn’t believe she’s wrong.

Cassia’s last day of service will be February 22
Cassia, an acclaimed Southeast Asian restaurant in Santa Monica
will close its doors after nearly a decade on February 22
The closure was confirmed in a statement to Eater from Cassia’s team
“We were fortunate to survive the pandemic and have enjoyed our wonderful 10-year run
we faced new challenges over the past few years
mainly the rising costs of operating a large-scale restaurant
these circumstances have rendered us unable to continue to operate.”
“Although this chapter is coming to a close
will live on in the memories of everyone who walked through our doors,” the statement continues
“We are immensely proud of what we’ve built and the legacy we leave behind.”
Fans of Ng’s cooking at Cassia have until February 22 to book a reservation. But the Ngs won’t be leaving Los Angeles’s restaurant scene anytime soon. The pair are currently working on opening their next restaurant
the new restaurant will serve fast-casual Chinese American food out of a 3,400-square-foot space at 2301 Santa Monica Boulevard
“We want to offer delicious and higher quality food in a way that is not only accessible in terms of price point
and speed — taking the genuineness and love found in home cooking and combining it with the care of fine dining,” Ng told Eater in July 2024
The Rustic Canyon Family will continue to operate its other Los Angeles and Ojai-area restaurants including Birdie G’s
The band Cassia has recently released a new track titled “Friends.” I have to be honest—I rarely listen to music for its story or lyrics
I just go along with the melodies and rhythms
the story behind Friends actually caught me off guard
If you watch the music video while listening to the song for the first time
I’m not entirely sure what genre to place this track in—something bordering indie
Friends is a surprisingly powerful track if you really focus on it
but it could just as easily blend into the background of a café or shopping mall
that’s one of the highest merits a pop song can achieve
This track reminds me of the folk/pop era when bands like Mumford & Sons were topping the charts
Friends might be just the right song for you
I’m still a huge fan of band culture—simply because I’m hopelessly in love with live music
There’s nothing better than musicians playing together in the moment
That’s why I love discovering great new bands like Cassia
Fun fact: the name "Cassia" comes from a djembe drum Jacob bought
they’ve continued evolving their sound while keeping it fresh
Many of their tracks share that same “happy-sad” quality I felt in Friends
you might also enjoy “Colossal Happiness” and “Boundless.”

Idaho Fish and Game officers received a report from the Cassia County Sheriff that an infant had been attacked and injured by a raccoon in his parents’ home
Officers from both agencies responded and determined the infant was in an infant carrier while the mother was settling in after returning home
She heard a loud noise in the home and ran to the infant’s location
The mother found a raccoon attacking her infant
She was able to grab the animal to stop the attack.
It is unknown how the raccoon gained access to the home.
The infant was taken by the parents to Cassia Regional Hospital in Burley for treatment of undisclosed injuries and then transferred to a hospital in Salt Lake City
The father of the infant and a sheriff’s deputy returned to the home
found the raccoon still in the home and killed it
Fish and Game is confident that the raccoon killed by the infants’ father was the one involved in the attack.
Fish and Game took possession of the raccoon carcass and coordinated with staff from South Central Public Health District to get the raccoon tested for rabies
Fish and Game staff transported the carcass to Boise for testing by the Idaho Bureau of Laboratories
staff from the Magic Valley Region activated their Wildlife Human Attack Response Team (WHART)
This specially trained team of department staff has the responsibility to act to protect the safety of the public and incident responders; attempt to identify
and control the animal(s) involved in a human-wildlife incident; and conduct
document and report investigative findings
While raccoons are a common species across Idaho
reports of attacks on humans are extremely rare
And while raccoons have a reputation as a potential carrier of rabies
only one case of raccoon rabies has been documented in Idaho.
Raccoons are generally shy and will typically avoid humans
but they can become aggressive if they feel threatened
As with all wildlife that can be found around homes in Idaho
the best course of action to avoid raccoon encounters is to take preventative actions before a problem starts
Raccoons can live in a variety of habitats
but an area with access to water and food will attract them
A homeowner can limit food sources by securing residential garbage, removing any fallen fruit or rotten produce from your yard or garden, feeding pets indoors
Blocking raccoon access to hiding places in sheds and outbuildings and sealing off potential entryways and exits in and around a home will also discourage raccoon use

Butler’s Augusto Cassia entered the portal over a month ago with interest and visits since then as a top power forward transferring this offseason
He has now made a choice of one of those programs he went and saw earlier in the process

Cassia just finished his second collegiate season with Butler
and averaged 2.4 points (52.6% FG) and 1.8 rebounds per game for the Bulldogs
He improved those up to 5.1 points (66.7% FG) and 3.1 boards a game on average in 10 appearances
Injuries delayed and eventually ended his career there though with a muscle strain keeping him out to start as a freshman before a ligament injury in his knee kept him out to finish as he left the program back in February
Cassia, a Brazilian native, attended the NBA Global Academy in Australia and in Mexico. He was rated by On3 as a four-star who was a Top-150 prospect and a Top-30 PF in the class in 2023.

Cassia has been out since suffering a knee injury Dec. 10 against North Dakota State. The injury was not thought to be season ending, but now the Brazil native will not play another game for Butler
Cassia will remain enrolled at the school and will finish the spring semester
Insider: Butler basketball can 'get hot,' and hopes beating Seton Hall is start of hot closing stretch
Cassia averaged 5.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game this season
He'll end his Butler career with 15 appearances (eight starts) over two seasons
220-pounder battled injuries throughout his career

averaging 5.1 points and securing 3.1 rebounds per game
In his second-to-last game before suffering a season-ending knee injury

UK-based band Cassia released a new single
“antidote.” This marks their second single of the year following their release of their EP Home Soon
This single has a very different sound to their previous single
“Heat.” The sound in this track is calming and refreshing and really shows the vast range of music they can produce
The song has a consistent charming percussion throughout
You have a nice melody from the drums paired with an almost tropical sound
the more interesting aspect of the song is how the music is paired with the vocals and lyrics
While the melody toes the lines of pop and prominent island beats
vocally the band brings the classic indie sound many fans love
the song is simpler but highlights key phrases to be striking and effective
Using more repetitive lyrics lets the listener focus on the ambience of the music
as the themes present within the lyrics are antidotes to English winters
The song essentially allows the audience to take refuge in the melodic composition that is peaceful and far from the emotions many who struggle with seasonal changes can experience
the song stands out among their latest releases and truly shows the range they hold musically
It’s definitely going to resonate with the audience the way it’s meant to
providing an escape from those cold English winters

Incredible Southeast Asian-Inspired Restaurant Cites Rising Costs
the acclaimed Southeast Asian-inspired restaurant
will close its doors in February after nearly a decade of operation
and the recent wildfires as contributing factors to its closure
This is 2025 second high profile closure in the month of January

It is concerning that such a popular and amazing restaurant that has been around for nearly ten years would be moved to shutter the eatery for these reasons and a few weeks of light customer traffic.

Drawing inspiration from the classic ballet slipper, the Cassia Lace-Up shoes exude elegance with their distinctive details. Firstly, the pumps feature bow-embellished square toes, offering a twist from Christian Louboutin’s signature pointed-toe designs that are loved by celebrities like Zendaya and Kate Moss
the shoes are also laced with long ribbon straps

Macclesfield natives Cassia are back with their third full-length record
outside’ arriving on April 11th via love sundays
The adoptive Mancunian trio weave heavy indie summer nostalgia with silky samba influences
Managing to capture the essence of summer in three short minutes
Cassia certainly got the memo if they were ever asked to open their album in style
tap-your-toes drums and some fun retro Gameboy keys make up a track that feels like it could have soundtracked an insane goals compilation at the Brazil World Cup
Cassia have their niche down to a tee; this is a collection of tracks that feel reminiscent of better times whilst remaining a modern sound
There will always be a welcome space in the world of music for summery indie-pop that wouldn’t feel out of place in a playlist called ‘Classic FIFA Bangers
‘Heat,’ continues the streak of indie bangers with a hat trick
A recurrent guitar sound brings us back to classic indie-rock days
The backing vocals and instrumentation feel like summer; this entire record is a shimmering summer’s day in a way
‘Miles Out’ again is a wonderful example of a gorgeous
the intro to ‘here & now’ could get anyone up and dancing
and the sci-fi synths on ‘antidote’ are really cool
Cassia do everything right in the process of curating a collection of indie summer stalwarts
but the record does reach a point in which it begins to feel similar
Some vocals sound too monotonous and one-dimensional in comparison with the creativity and fluidity of the music
creating somewhat of a roadblock in how well the album flows
it’d be the perfect summer vibe – in its current form
it is a fun indie record that you can’t help but think has a lot of untapped potential
Cassia have clearly set out to create the soundtrack to a modern-day indie summer
and they do it well – if not spectacularly
because it is a brilliant easy listen for a beautiful day as the sun beams down

Metrics details
is a subtropical plant that is used for food and medicine
Climate change has changed the suitable habitats of medicinal plants
which might have repercussions for the efficacy of herbal remedies
the potential distribution in each period of Cinnamomum cassia was predicted and the quality in different suitable habitats was evaluated
and soil are the primary environmental variables influencing C
(2) The high-suitable habitats of current climate scenarios were predominantly located in the southern regions (Guangdong and Guangxi etc.) of China
suitable habitats will increasingly move northward
with a greater concentration south of the Yangtze River
the total area of newly extended suitable habitat reaches 312,963.53 km2
can be effective methods for identifying different suitable habitats of C
The content of trans-cinnamaldehyde (0.85%) is significantly higher in the high suitability habitat compared to the medium-low suitability habitat (0.30%)
Our findings can offer valuable guidance for the identification of suitable C
cassia resource quality and the rational use of resources in different suitable habitats
cassia is now mainly distributed in the provinces of Hainan
Approximately 80% of the global supply of C
cassia oil comes from Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces
little is known about how different climatic and environmental variables affect the distribution and habitat quality of C
There are few reports on the distribution pattern and ecological suitability of C
under the conditions of severe climate and environmental changes
it is particularly urgent to study the migration and diffusion of this species and its responses and adaptations to global warming
cassia was the subject of this investigation
and samples collected from various suitable habitats were analyzed using chemometrics
Fourier transform infrared reflection (FTIR)
and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
according to the MaxEnt model and forecast prospective suitable growth regions and changes in C
cassia’s geographic distribution as the climate shifts
These are the dominant themes that the study intends to cover: (1) When considering past
what is the probable distribution and spatial pattern of C
(2) How do environmental variables affect the spatial distribution of C
(3) In what ways can future climate changes alter the optimal distribution and spatial pattern of C
The answers to these questions may form the foundation for future efforts to protect C
as well as for the delineation of appropriate planting locations
(a) Spatial distribution pattern of C. cassia as determined by 158 valid occurrence records in China (Created using ArcGIS 10.4.1, https://www.esri.com/)
ArcGIS (v 10.4.1) and MaxEnt software (v 3.4.4) were used to analyze and assess the 158 C
cassia distribution point data across different climatic scenarios
75% of the distribution points were used as the training set for the prediction model
while the remaining was used to evaluate model performance after it was run ten times
To accurately characterize the local plant populations
we collected fresh leaf samples at random from three different plants for each sample
the samples were dried in the air and then crushed into a powder (60 mesh) after being rinsed using tap water
Methanol was used in an ultrasonic extraction of the sample
we employed an FTIR spectrometer (a Nicolet 5700 from Thermo Nicolet Corp.) equipped with a deuterated triglycine sulfate (DTGS) detector
IR spectra were obtained between 400 and 4000 cm−1
A steady 25 °C temperature and a relative humidity of 30% were maintained in the room
Pieces of KBr tablets were prepared for infrared spectrometric investigation by combining dry KBr powder (100 mg) with C
Three sets of measurements were collected using three scans each
yielding a total of nine spectra; the average chart was then used as the final spectrum
These spectra were processed by removing the effects of air
After importing the spectrum data into OMNIC 8.0 for baseline correction and smoothing
we used Unscrambler 9.7 to standardize normal variations
we employed the Euclidean distance and the hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA)
we employed the common peak area in HPLC and the relative absorbance in FTIR to establish the distance matrix of the chromatographic area and samples
USA) was used to generate the dendrogram and execute cluster analysis
The HPLC peak area and FTIR relative absorbency of 31 batches of C
cassia samples were determined utilizing the SIMCA software and an orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) model was constructed
The OPLS-DA and subsequent scatter plots were produced in SIMCA 14.1
The findings demonstrate that the MaxEnt model calculation attained excellent accuracy and that the reliability of the experimental data was high
and temperature were significant elements influencing the potential distribution of C
we should further study the relationship between C
cassia quality and soil microorganisms in different suitable habitats
to better reveal the localization mechanism of C
Climate change scenarios-related suitable habitats for the C. cassia. a, b: Current; c: Last glacial maximum (LGM); d: Middle holocene (MH); e: 2050 (average for 2041–2060), SSP126; f: 2050 (average for 2041–2060) SSP585; g: 2090 (average for 2081–2100), SSP126; h: 2090 (average for 2081–2100), SSP585 (Created using ArcGIS 10.4.1, https://www.esri.com/).
cassia’s suitable habitat (in km2) across various climatic scenarios under different periods
which agreed with the findings of this research
and further proved the reliability of our findings
temperature and precipitation are important key variables affecting C
This suggests that temperature and precipitation may be key factors influencing the southward expansion of suitable habitat for C
cassia’s trans-cinnamaldehyde content in various suitable habitats
HIG was the trans-cinnamaldehyde average content of high-suitable habitats (GX1-GX16 and GD1-GD8)
MOD/LES was the trans-cinnamaldehyde average content of medium- and low-suitable habitats (YN1-YN5
The columns having different uppercase letters are significantly different (p < 0.05)
** Very significant differences p < 0.01
cassia from different geographical origins
it can be observed that the high-suitable habitats (green box) and the medium- and low-suitable habitats (blue box) samples of C
Guangxi) are located in the western part of Guangxi
which makes them similar to the samples from the medium- and low-suitable habitats
and OPLS-DA score plot (c) from the IR spectra for 31 C
and Puyang are far away from the Xijiang River Basin and have different climatic and soil environments
which may lead to large differences in chemical composition between the three samples and other samples from high-suitable habitats
is an effective and accurate method for identifying different suitable habitats of C
proving once again that the MaxEnt model used in this study is accurate
we evaluated and predicted the distribution of C
Cassia suitable habitats across all periods using the parameter-optimized MaxEnt model
MaxEnt’s simulation of suitable regions and climatic suitability characteristics is basically in line with reality
(1) The most suitable environmental conditions for the growth of C
cassia were: precipitation of warmest quarter at 579.33–1165.20 mm
precipitation of driest quarter at 26.32–50.68 mm
Temperature seasonality range at 402.85–870.67
and topsoil clay content at 41.40-51.88% weight (2) In the current era
Guangxi and Guangdong provinces offer the most conducive environment for C
Under both climate change scenarios (SSP126 and SSP585)
the suitable regional area for this species is projected to expand from the 2050s to the 2090s
the most significant increase is expected under the SSP585 scenario for the 2090s
where the largest suitable habitat area will be primarily concentrated in the southern region of the Yangtze River
(3) The different suitable habitats have a significant influence on the quality and characteristics of C
with the trans-cinnamaldehyde content being significantly higher in the high-suitable habitats than in the medium- and low-suitable habitats
in conjunction with HCA and OPLS-DA demonstrated that C
cassia samples collected from a variety of suitable habitats could be efficiently categorized
and assessed according to the bioactive chemicals
The workflow used in this study provides a useful reference for determining C
identifies present and potential future high-suitability regions
and implements a methodical plan and thorough understanding of the relevant cultivation technology to guarantee a harvest of sufficient quantity and quality to satisfy market need
and enables actual production by providing a theoretical foundation
with their strong sprouting and regenerative abilities
can contribute to restoring forest resilience
cassia cultivation can help maintain the ecological balance in the region and promote forest recovery
particularly by facilitating increased carbon sequestration and reduced carbon emissions in the future

Wares leader Cassia Hardy has released a solo single paying tribute to the Empress Ale House, an Edmonton pub and venue that shut down back in 2020 — and, in doing so, has created a hazy love letter to the rose-tinted memories of early adulthood.
"Empress" mixes a lo-fi electronic pulse with brittle guitar strums and Hardy's punk-inflected yelps, as she reminisces about howling at the moon from the gravel parking lot and "passing that same hundred bucks around" — but it's in the instrumental breaks that the nostalgia really hits home, with gorgeous string synths that evoke the bleary romance of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven."
This song is a composite photo, in memory of a few places close to my heart as a patron and a worker. Head and shoulders above them was the Empress. I can still see the way it looked at last call, when the house lights went up. Animal skulls lined the blood red walls, the dark wooden tables at once sticky and slippery. We served beer by the imperial pint, free pretzels, and a petrified $30 hungry man dinner in the freezer to satisfy the license.
Like any good pub, the Empress was a multi-generational hub, a rock club, a dusty 100 year old prairie saloon, a listening room, a political salon and the city's preeminent lesbian hangout, depending on the night. It reigned for 13 years, and it didn't have to end, either. As unique as it was, like so many other places, the landlords got greedy and didn't know what they were messing with.
Some folks who went might never know what happened, some might not care to, and more and more will never have seen it at all. Sometimes the sweet things in life don't burn out or fade away, they are taken. It's a weed store now after sitting vacant for a year.

BURLEY, Idaho — The Cassia County Fair and Rodeo got underway on August 10th
All week long judging events for animal entries will take place
On Monday and Tuesday over 70 dairy heifers were shown by the FFA and 4H kids who raised them
(Below is the transcript from the broadcast story)“You can see here we have to clip them here everything except the back and the belly so it will be big
and (the hair) stand out so it stays straight,”
This is the fifth dairy heifer Jose Reyes has shown at the Cassia County Fair
"What we're doing right now is combing here
and we're trying to make their hair look as nice as possible for the judge so we have the most chance of winning,” Reyes said
More than 70 kids have cows in the dairy heifer show
“Yeah it's spa day for the dairy heifers,” Brandon Brackenbury told me as the cows were getting shampooed
When Brackenbury became superintendent of the Cassia County 4h
there were fewer than a dozen entries in the dairy competition
"One of the hard things for the kids was getting animals,” Brackembury said
“Unless they were directly involved in the dairy industry with their families
Brackenbury worked with dairy operators to create a pool of dairy calves that would be available to 4h kids who needed one
In a few years the number of entries went from less than a dozen to over a hundred
this is the kind of the culmination of all the efforts that started whenever the kids picked out their animals,” Brackenbury said
Brackenbury now serves as Cassia County Educator for the University of Idaho College of Ag
and he is still involved in the 4H program
4h made time to show five heifers that wouldn't be in the contest
The Anderson family had five kids entered in the show
but tragedy claimed the life of one of their siblings
the five Anderson kids were attending a funeral instead
so she contacted their mother and asked if she and some volunteers could show the cows for them
“I told her that I’d just love to show her kids’ cows for them and get them sold,” Sammi Smith said
“Because it's kind of not going to be very fun if you worked with your cow all summer
With more events through the week including turkeys< rabbits< swine< sheep and goats
over 400 kids have entries in this year's cassia county fair
“It's something really comfortable for me cause i love animals around them
“It's just something that makes me happy.”

2023 a 17-year old blue belt named Cassia Moura left Brazil
having secured the documents to travel overseas
with the intent of competing at the IBJJF World Championships under the guidance of Bruno Bastos
Bastos had already heard of Moura long before this from her coach
Mikael Reis from IP Jiu Jitsu (a social project Bastos supports)
because she just doesn’t fit here.” She was training at a social project Bastos supported
Bastos explained that while Moura came from a community with high crime rates
She did not have any tendencies towards a life of crime like her peers
She bet on herself and on jiu-jitsu to be a way out
to not be another statistic like those around her.
After finally getting the opportunity to travel to the United States
she initially planned to return home after five weeks
warming up by winning a small local tournament in Lubbock mid May before her winning streak on the World Championship mats two weeks later.
Cassia was watching the Female Black Belt Featherweight finals match between Bianca Basilio and Ana Rodrigues
Bruno turned and asked her if she would fight either of those athletes that day on the finals mat if she could
She replied “I don’t think i would win if I fought either of them today
I would definitely still fight them” to which Bruno replied
“let’s get ready because you’re going to come back here as a brown belt.”
In the next 363 days Cassia went on to make history
winning No-Gi Worlds and getting her brown belt; and fulfilling her coaches prophecy
dominating yet another World Championship at brown
Bastos explains that there is deliberate planning that is involved in Cassia's preparation
Bastos gave her the option of choosing to be either an ADCC or IBJJF world champion
He could see her potential to be either but respected her choice when she replied “I want to be an IBJJF World champion next year.”
When asked how it feels to achieve that goal
I think of that every time I step on the mat
I fight not just for myself but for my family and friends back home
then assisting with 2-3 hours of kids classes
Most of it was self directed with her days starting at 5am and ending after 10pm
“I knew I had potential and I just had to work really hard,” she said of her training schedule
She credits her hard work as well as the help of her coaches back home
She said the only regret she has is leaving school to be able to train at that volume
Something she plans to remedy here by returning to study.
As for her plans for the future: “Win No-Gi Worlds and then go home for Christmas to see my family.”

Butler sophomore forward Augusto Cassia has been living the life of a professional basketball player since he was 15 years old
Cassia didn't start playing basketball until he was 12, putting down the soccer ball in his hometown of Salvador, Brazil and transitioning to the hardwood. He left home to train at the NBA Academy Latin America in Mexico, the same program that helped develop Indiana Pacers star Bennedict Mathurin
By age 20, Cassia was training in Australia, at an NBA Academy program for top international players. While playing at a tournament in Atlanta with the Global Academy, Cassia caught the eye of former Butler assistant Kevin Kuwik
but the super-athletic 6-9 forward did not hit the ground running to start his Bulldogs career

Cassia missed his first 10 games due to injury
being deployed as a defensive specialist at times
Cassia didn't play a full minute against Providence
but his late-game block sealed the win over the Friars
Cassia dedicated himself to improving his body
forgoing a trip back home and staying in Indiana all summer to build the strength necessary to withstand the rigors of the Big East and stave off the nagging injuries that plagued him throughout his career
"I have been away from my family since I'm 15 years old
"Of course I want to see them at least once a year
he was part of a lineup that helped keep the Bulldogs in the game
Needing a spark after a bad loss to the Governors
Cassia's offseason sacrifices were rewarded with a spot in the starting lineup Monday against Western Michigan
His athleticism and length allow him to guard positions 1 through 5
but he provides enough shot blocking and interior offense to make him a capable two-way threat
The defensive instincts have always been there for Cassia
he's becoming more involved in the offense
rolling hard to the basket in pick-and-rolls
elevating for lobs or drawing enough attention to free up a teammate on the perimeter for a 3
He had by far the best game of his career against the Broncos finishing with 16 points
three blocks and one steal in the 85-65 win at Hinkle Fieldhouse
"So my ability to guard helps the team a lot
It lets the other guys take a break a little bit like Jah (Telfort) when I guard the best player
Cassia and sophomore Boden Kapke look like the Dawgs' center tandem of the future
Sophomore Finley Bizjack has transitioned from bench scorer into lead guard in Year 2 with the Dawgs
Bizjack also had one of the best games of his career against the Broncos finishing with 10 points
Bizjack has 11 assists and just one turnover
If Bizjack can bring a steady presence to the point guard spot and Cassia evolves into a two-way threat at center
Butler assistant coach Maurice Joseph said Cassia just started to scratch the surface of his immense potential
Cassia slammed home lobs and two-handed dunks
used his length to contest shots on the perimeter and shot a strong 8-for-10 from the free throw line
There are nuances of the game Cassia still needs to learn
like dunking the ball instead of taking a short jump shot
But if Monday's game is just the beginning
then Cassia could be developing into a star
"There were some things that he needed to do with his body that required him to kind of stay here and hunker down," Joseph said
he really invested in that part of his development
So the fact that he was just able to play and he's healthy is the biggest piece for him
"We think that he has a lot of room for growth
and we're going to continue to develop him and continue to kind of harp on certain things that he's doing well
He's a kid who's incredibly passionate and really cares
and for a kid to sacrifice and stay here and be away from his family
Idaho — Cassia Regional Tech Center broke ground today on a new 10,000 square-foot diesel tech shop
to allow the program to have its own space
and expand to meet the needs of students in Cassia County
(The following is a transcription of the full broadcast story.)
That's just the way it is,” instructor Chad Evans told me an hour before the groundbreaking for a new diesel shop
Growing demand in the diesel industry brings new opportunities to the Magic Valley
“There's not anywhere in the world or in our county or anywhere you can't go find something that's related to it
Evans teaches diesel tech to Cassia County high schoolers.
Currently sharing a shop and classroom space with the automotive instructor
“We've done a lot of good things in here but it's just
you get a semi in here and it takes up half my side of the shop,” Evans said
So Evans is understandably thrilled that Cassia Regional Tech Center broke ground on a new ten thousand square-foot shop for the diesel program
“Safety is going to be better,” Evans said
“It’s also gonna allow me to let a few more kids in so maybe grow my program a little bit.”
Chester Bradshaw is the assistant superintendent for Cassia County schools
He sees students making major career decisions in high school..
and sees this expansion as a way to keep up with how young people are planning their futures
“I feel like our challenge as school administrators is to make sure that students understand their options way better,” Bradshaw told Idaho News 6
“So that when they're completed with high school they have a much better idea of what's out there for them.”
With six pull-through bays the days of the 18 point turns to fit the big rigs into the shop are about to be a thing of the past
but that's that's one of the difficulties of the shop for the big stuff,” Evans said
Cassia Moura's amazing climb in the world of Jiu-Jitsu continued on Day 1 of the IBJJF Worlds 2024 Championships when the 18-year-old earned her Black Belt just months after being a Blue Belt.
Moura, or Cassia Remesar as she's listed on the IBJJF website, won a championship as a Blue Belt at IBJJF Worlds 2024 and has never looked back. She dominated at WNO 23 a few weeks before Worlds when she used a rear naked choke to beat veteran Jessie Crane.
And now she's officially a Black Belt.
"I did it," said to FloGrappling Moura after winning the Adult Brown Featherweight class championship. "This is my dream
Moura went on to finish third in the Adult Brown Open Class.
Following the Open Class matches, her instructor Bruno Bastos, who competed at the 2024 Master IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu North American the day before
So it's very nice to see a girl going in one year from Blue to Black.
"I think that's unheard of in Jiu-Jitsu," he added
"But I think that it's well deserved and you have to earn things and I think she for sure earned that Black Belt."
she'll do so having go to three straight IBJJF Worlds with three different belts.
Here is the schedule, all times are Pacific Standard, for the match mat assignments on Day 1 of IBJFF Worlds

A new archaeological enhancement project is seeing the light of day along the historic Via Cassia at km 11.700
where excavations conducted between 2020 and 2022 led to the discovery of an ancient Etruscan and Roman site
namely between the Special Superintendence of Rome
the company Eos Arc that carried out the excavation and Rossetti Fuel srl that commissioned it
a Roman paved road and a complex system of underground tunnels
The open day will be an opportunity to discover the traces of a millennia-long frequentation that has bequeathed a true historical stratification
making this place a window to the past of enormous cultural value.“The Superintendence does not only deal with the historic center and large of archaeological complexes,” says Daniela Porro
“but also protects and enhances archaeological discoveries in more decentralized areas by keeping them in their urban context and in constant relation with the life of the inhabitants of the area
the finds enrich the city and at the same time give back to the citizens their history by developing their sense of belonging and connection with the territory.”
has revealed a past rooted in the 7th-6th centuries B.C.
as evidenced by the discovery of a chamber tomb from the Etruscan period
This area proves to be not only a witness to life and death in ancient times
but also an important junction for connections at the time
as confirmed by the remains of roads and routes
later expanded with a residential wing in the first centuries of the Imperial age
With the passage of time and the intensification of trade routes
a post station where travelers could rest and refresh themselves
as well as a spa facility of which an intricate network of underground tunnels used to supply the baths remains visible today
The in situ valorization project was made possible through a synergy between the public and private sectors
In collaboration with the Special Superintendence and Eos Arc
the company Rossetti Fuel srl created a pedestrian path that winds inside a service station
offering a novel way of enjoying the archaeological heritage
The path allows visitors to admire some of the most significant points of the site
the paved road and access to the ancient underground water tunnels
An informative video made by Eos Arc has been set up inside the gas station
detailing the stages of the archaeological excavation and the research work conducted in recent years
Thanks to this modern multimedia presentation
visitors can learn about the history of the site and better understand the historical stratification that characterizes this area of the Via Cassia
17 event represents an important opportunity for citizens of Rome and the surrounding area to come into direct contact with local history
guided by the staff of the Special Superintendence of Rome and professionals from Eos Arc
visitors will have free access to the site
and moments of explanation will be organized to illustrate the archaeological discoveries
the evolution of the site and the conservation techniques adopted
The project is an interesting example of collaboration between the public and private sectors for the enhancement of cultural heritage
through the Special Superintendence of Rome
provided scientific supervision and archaeological protection
Eos Arc carried out the archaeological excavation while Rossetti Fuel srl provided space and resources to integrate the archaeological site within a modern service area
The result is a project that combines archaeology with everyday life
offering a new perspective on accessible and immersive cultural enhancement
Those who wish to visit the site and find out more about the area’s Etruscan and Roman history can attend the free open day on Sunday
inside the gas station operated by Rossetti Fuel srl
It will be possible to see the site and take advantage of the explanations provided by archaeologists from the Special Superintendence of Rome and experts from Eos Arc
A unique opportunity for those who want to discover a heritage that continues to live alongside the daily life of the city.
