Although dental caries is largely preventable, it remains highly prevalent among children.
Evaluate family factors associated with the prevalence of dental caries in 5-year-old children.
This cross-sectional study recruited 5-year-old children from public preschools in Araraquara, São Paulo, Brazil. Data on sociodemographic factors, family routines, and oral health practices were gathered via a self-administered questionnaire completed independently by caregivers. Children received a dental clinical examination at school and caries experience was recorded using the dmft and SiC (Significant Caries index) indexes following the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria.
Data analysis was performed using Chi-square and multiple logistic regression using a significance level of 5%. Of the 578 children in the study, 67.3% were caries-free. The mean dmft index was 1.14 (SD = 2.24), while the SiC index stood at 3.46 (2.69). Factors such as income, caregiver assistance with toothbrushing, caregiver perception of child and parent oral health, and prioritization of dental visits within the family were associated with caries presence.
Overall, dental caries prevalence was low in this population, with family factors demonstrating significant associations with dental caries. The attitudes of caregivers regarding oral health appear to wield considerable influence over the dental health of their children.

Background: Although dental caries is largely preventable
it remains highly prevalent among children
Aim: Evaluate family factors associated with the prevalence of dental caries in 5-year-old children
Design: This cross-sectional study recruited 5-year-old children from public preschools in Araraquara
and oral health practices were gathered via a self-administered questionnaire completed independently by caregivers
Children received a dental clinical examination at school and caries experience was recorded using the dmft and SiC (Significant Caries index) indexes following the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria
Results: Data analysis was performed using Chi-square and multiple logistic regression using a significance level of 5%
The mean dmft index was 1.14 (SD = 2.24)
caregiver perception of child and parent oral health
and prioritization of dental visits within the family were associated with caries presence
dental caries prevalence was low in this population
with family factors demonstrating significant associations with dental caries
The attitudes of caregivers regarding oral health appear to wield considerable influence over the dental health of their children
During the preschool age, parents play a crucial role as mediators of information, behaviors, and decisions related to their child's health. Psychosocial factors, such as resilience and self-efficacy, emerge as significant mediators influencing oral health behaviors, including the pivotal decision to seek dental care (12, 13)
Exploring actions and factors linked to parents' perceptions of their children's oral health is essential for identifying key indicators that may influence behaviors and approaches related to oral health maintenance
This understanding can directly impact practices like consistent diet control and the proactive pursuit of dental care
the aim of this study was to evaluate family-related factors contributing to the prevalence of dental caries among 5-year-old children
This cross-sectional study received approval from the Research Ethics Committee of the São Paulo State University (UNESP) School of Dentistry
Araraquara (FOAr-UNESP (CAAE 62756922.0.0000.5416) and authorization from the Department of Education Araraquara
all participants provided signed informed consent and assent forms
Data collection was conducted between June and December 2023 at Education and Recreation Centers (ERCs) situated in the municipality of Araraquara
A total of forty-five ERCs were identified through the Educational Portal of the City Hall of Araraquara
only three did not participate in the project
and one was not invited due to the absence of enrolled 5-year-old children
Inclusion criteria for participation comprised: (a) children aged 5 years; (b) mothers who were 18 years old or older (c) appropriately authorized informed consent forms by the caregivers; and (d) properly authorized assent forms by the children
A total of 578 pairs of participants (children and caregivers) returned the consent
Data collection encompassed the dissemination of semi-structured and self-administered questionnaires by the school to caregivers
supplemented by digital formats accessible through Google Forms
The questionnaires covered socioeconomic and demographic data
and information pertaining to the child's oral health
Questions within the questionnaire were derived from validated instruments (Supplement)
Upon the completion of the questionnaires by caregivers
a clinical examination of the children was conducted
after their authorization through the Assent and Consent Form
Three examiners conducted the examinations after 20 h of training by two gold-standard examiners (median agreement rate of 85%)
The training included theoretical and practical calibration sessions
using clinical case photographs and discussions to reach diagnostic consensus
The questionnaire underwent a pre-testing phase involving 11 mothers and/or caregivers of children aged between 4 and 12 years
who were patients at the Dental Public Health Clinic of the School of Dentistry
Araraquara and presented with similar sociodemographic characteristics
the researcher (GTC) monitored the response duration
observing an average completion time of 15 min
participants expressed uncertainties regarding specific questions
Subsequent adjustments were made to improve the questionnaire's clarity and suitability for participants
The oral clinical examinations were performed in schools
Visual-tactile methods were employed during the examinations
In adherence to COVID-19 protocols at the schools
there was no prior brushing before the examination
Dental caries data were collected during the examination following the criteria outlined in SB BRASIL 2020 and WHO 2013 (dmft index)
One examiner conducted the child's oral examination and verbally dictated the codes
while another examiner recorded the codes on paper forms
Data analysis was performed using SPSS software (version 28.0.0.1)
with a significance level set at 5%
The study sample comprised of 578 pairs of participants (children and caregivers)
while the SiC index was at 3.46 (SD = 2.69)
The prevalence of dental caries experience was 32.7%
Table 1 presents the results categorized according to the conceptual model of Fisher-Owens et al. 2007 (7)
Among children with dental caries experience (dmft ≥ 1)
36.7% had not visited the dentist for more than 2 years
The majority (67.7%) of children whose parents reported daily tooth brushing habits remained free of dental caries
children who consumed sugary foods and drinks three or more times a day exhibited a dental caries prevalence of 31.7%
while the majority (68.3%) of those consuming such items up to twice a day remained caries-free
Association between factors related to children
and communities and the presence or absence of dental caries in 5-year-old children
when caregivers rated their own oral health as good/excellent
71.2% of their children were caries-free
children whose caregivers rated their oral health as good/excellent showed no dental caries (77.8%)
Children whose parents who did not assist them with tooth brushing displayed dmft ≥ 1 (47.8%)
Children from households with an income > R$3,000 (>US$600) showed better oral health
Caregivers who stated that oral health was a priority exhibited better oral conditions for their children
with 68.6% being cavity-free and only 31.4% experiencing dental caries
69.3% of children whose caregivers felt safe/moderately safe in their neighborhoods did not have dental caries
Most children whose parents reported that their neighborhood had playgrounds and parks did not have dental caries (69.2%)
Multiple logistic regression analysis for the absence/presence of dental caries (dmft)
Multiple logistic regression analysis for absence/presence of dental caries (dmft) including variables related to knowledge about dental caries
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dental caries affects approximately 2.3 billion people worldwide, with 53.4% of 5-year-old children in Brazil affected (2, 18). Beyond environmental factors, parental influences play a significant role in shaping children's oral health (8)
Our study findings revealed that familial factors
involvement in children's dental brushing
significantly influence the presence of dental caries in preschool children
children who received parental assistance during brushing demonstrated a reduced risk of developing dental caries
even when this assistance occurred only once a day on certain days of the week
In a study aiming to quantify the association between caregivers' perception of their own oral health and that of their child, the authors noted a significant correlation between the caregivers' poor perception of their own oral health and that of their child (28)
caregivers demonstrated notable accuracy in assessing their child's oral health and current oral condition
Children whose caregivers reported a negative perception of their children's oral health exhibited a higher likelihood of experiencing dental caries
Educational programs tailored to sensitize caregivers to the significance of dental care can equip them with the necessary information and resources to promote better oral health practices in their households
by fostering a collaborative approach that prioritizes education and support
we can strive to improve the oral health outcomes of children and alleviate barriers to accessing dental care
a complex condition influenced by various factors
and community dynamics that contribute to its occurrence
community-level variables did not emerge as significant predictors of dental caries presence
our findings revealed that most caregivers expressed a sense of security within their neighborhoods
they reported ample social interaction opportunities for children
the study did not uncover a significant association with the prevalence of dental caries
This suggests that while community factors play a role in shaping oral health outcomes
other individual and familial determinants may exert a more substantial influence
Further exploration is warranted to fully understand the interplay of these factors in the development of dental caries and to inform targeted intervention strategies
the use of a self-administered questionnaire introduced the possibility of incomplete responses or multiple selections for questions requiring single responses
coupled with the exclusive inclusion of public schools
This selective sampling approach may limit the generalizability of findings
as the sample of 5-year-old children may not fully represent the broader population within the city
it is noteworthy that our study encompassed a substantial sample size of 578 5-year-old children
enabling robust statistical analyses with a high level of test power (99%)
the extensive sample size enhances the reliability of our findings and contributes valuable insights into the prevalence and determinants of dental caries among young children
a low prevalence of dental caries was observed
with familial factors showing an association with this condition
The attitudes of caregivers regarding oral health seem to exert a significant influence on the dental health of their children
dental professionals are tasked with assuming an educational
and positive reinforcement role to cultivate attitudes conducive to improving and maintaining oral health
dental professionals can contribute to shaping a family environment that prioritizes oral health promotion
The raw data supporting the conclusion will be made available by the authors upon request

While plant-based transient expression systems have demonstrated their potency to rapidly express economically feasible quantities of complex human proteins
less is known about their compatibility with posttranslational modification control
Here we investigated three commonly used transient expression vectors
magnICON and pTra for their capability to express a multi-component protein with controlled and modified N-glycosylation
which carries next to the conserved Fc an additional N-glycosylation site (GS) in the Fab-domain
While pEAQ and pTra produce fully assembled Cx at similar levels in N
the yield of magnICON-Cx was twice as high
both Cx-GSs exhibited typical plant N-glycans decorated with plant-specific xylose and fucose
Cx generated in the glycoengineered ΔXTFT line carried mainly complex N-glycans lacking plant specific residues
Exposure to different engineering settings (encompassing stable lines and transient approaches) towards human galactosylation and sialylation resulted in Cx carrying targeted N-glycans at similar quantities using all three expression vectors
our results exhibit the universal application of plant-based glycoengineering
thereby increasing the attractivity of the ambitious expression platform
a comparative evaluation of transient vectors would be beneficial to further judge their potencies and help researchers and companies to select the correct tools for their target proteins
thus this mAb provides a particularly useful model
Identical Cx heavy (HC) and light chain (LC) open reading frames (ORF) were cloned into the three vector backbones and transiently expressed side by side in WT and different glycoengineering settings
Recombinant expression was comparatively monitored for mAb yields and biochemical features
Cx HC and LC ORFs (HC 1350 bp, LC 645 bp), codon optimized for N. benthamiana, were fused to barley α-amylase signal sequence (GenBank: X15226.1) (Supplementry Figure S3) and subcloned into the magnICON (vectors pICH26211 and pICH31150), pEAQ (vector pEAQ-HT) and pTra (vector pMIDAS) plasmids (Supplemetry Figure S1; Supplementry Table S2)
All vectors were transformed into Agrobacterium tumefaciens (magnICON
pEAQ: strain GV3101 pMP90; pTra: GV3101 pMP90RK)
benthamiana plants were grown in a plant chamber at 24°C
60% humidity with a 16 h light/8 h dark photoperiod
Leaves of 4 to 5 weeks old plants were used for infiltration by syringe
Up to three fully expanded leaves of medium age were infiltrated per plant
Infiltrated leaves were flash-frozen in liquid nitrogen and the cells disrupted by milling (Retsch MM 400)
Total soluble proteins were extracted (0.1 M Tris
0.04 M ascorbic acid; pH 7) and SDS-PAGE analysis was performed in 12% gels under reducing or non-reducing conditions
Gels were stained with Coomassie Brilliant Blue R 250 or used for immunoblotting with anti-human IgG (1:5,000 Promega anti-hIgG-HRPO
Recombinant Cx was purified by affinity chromatography using protein A
eluted (0.1 M Glycine/HCl; pH 2.5) and neutralized (1 M Tris; pH 9)
Protein concentration was measured by UV-Vis Spectrophotometer (NanoDrop™)
the observed results point to the ability of all three vectors to produce Cx with no obvious differences with regards to biochemical features
Yield of Cx at different days post infiltration (dpi)
Error bars represent standard error of the mean
Yield in µg purified Cx per g plant material (pm)
Abundances ≥5% are displayed as rounded whole numbers
An interesting observation was made regarding GS occupancy. While the Fab was virtually 100% N-glycosylated in all settings, Fc-GS was only partially occupied, namely about 50% using the magnICON vector and approx. 70% using pTra and pEAQ (Supplementary Table S3)
It seems that the Fab-GS is more accessible for the oligosaccharyltransferase complex that initiates N-glycosylation than its Fc counterpart
in accordance with results described above
The bi-N-glycosylated multi component protein Cetuximab provides a good model to assess the three potent transient expression vectors
By applying agrobacteria concentrations of OD600 0.1
the yield peak of Cx was obtained in all three cases 3-4 dpi
expression level was about double using magnICON
The comparable Ab yields produced by the other two vectors correlated with their architectural similarities in terms of viral enhancer utilization to drive expression
in contrast to magnICON’s reconstructed viral genomes
claims on the effect of specific vector elements cannot be made based on the presented data
we did not observe obvious differences in biochemical features as determined by SDS-PAGE under reducing and non-reducing conditions between Cx produced through the three vectors
Cx expressed with all three expression vectors are similarly susceptible to glycoengineering
the downregulation of fucose and xylose using ∆XTFT remains stable
This is especially remarkable when using pEAQ
since this expression vector carries the p19 silencing suppressor gene
potentially weakening/releasing RNAi-based downregulation
GS occupancy seems to be highly site-specific
as Fab domains are virtually fully N-glycosylated in all cases
our results point to the enormous potential and the universal use of plant-based glycoengineering and may encourage more scientists to generate complex glycoproteins with designed PTMs
This improves product quality and efficacy
thereby increasing the attractivity of the so far highly underestimated plant-based expression systems

The contemporary approach of Viterbo Interior Design distinguishes the impressive architecture of the new luxury residential building Castilho 203.
Castilho 203 is currently the most prominent high-end real estate project to be found in Lisbon
its 13 floors contain a total of 19 apartments
including a penthouse with a private swimming pool
The location couldn’t be better; in front of the park Eduardo VII and close to the majority of Lisbon’s notable cultural and touristic highlights
Viterbo Interior Design was commissioned with public areas such as the entrance lobby
the twists and turns of Lisbon’s many narrow alleys were a source of inspiration in the creation of these interiors
organic shapes and a selective use of strong colors (like coral and raspberry
for example) lend these spaces a futuristic atmosphere
Even the extensive use of wood in areas such as the lobby and the cinema has a clearly modern touch
All combined, the interiors form an interesting complement to the robust and impactful architecture of the building – which was designed by ARX Architects in Portugal
“We had long meetings to ensure that both the exterior and the interior of this project blended seamlessly
I truly respect the power of architecture and like to ‘flow in’ in a way that contributes to the soul of architectural creations and the emotional impact in the experience of those who are inside them,” Gracinha Viterbo
consoles and reception desks were made by Viterbo Interior Design
Working alongside the company are several local master artisans who specialize in materials such as wood
Portuguese craftsmanship is a specialty of the house.
“Ever since our company was founded by my mother Graça Viterbo over 50 years ago
we have had a close relationship with many artisans in different fields throughout Portugal
we witnessed many of these professionals closing their businesses; including very rare artisans specialized in crafts in danger of extinction,” Gracinha said.
we decided to create a platform of artisans within our working structure
resulting in an arrangement which provides our clients with the best of what is handmade and more creativity
It became a clear part of the Viterbo Interior Design’s mission to nurture these crafts and help them survive
contributing to the endurance of traditions to be passed on from generation to generation
And this choice regards both culture and sustainability,” Gracinha continued
bespoke art installations are also incorporated into Castilho 203’s public areas
Gracinha Viterbo used a combination of contemporary artists
The particularly impressive suspended installation at the spa’s front desk is the creation of floral designer Violetta Goldaracena

The implementation of the house was initially determined by two legal conditions. The first was the compliance with the servitude area corresponding to a high voltage line of Cemig (non-aedificandi area), a parameter that left only 21 meters of free land from the sidewalk to the beginning of the strip. The second restriction was to comply with the suppression area of tree species previously approved by the State Environmental Secretariat of Minas Gerais for construction on this lot.
First floor planThe roof is composed of two large, mismatched inclined planes, with different slopes and closures in thermoacoustic trapezoidal tiles. The composition raises the social area in relation to the intimate area, allowing for the creation of zenithal lighting for circulation between intimate and social spaces. The main gain with this solution is a house always well-lit with natural light.

Vanderbilt has been a pioneer in the study of the Americas
and Latinx Studies (CLACX) once again finds itself at the forefront
both at the university and across the country
“The center has been a thought leader for decades, starting with a focus on Brazilian studies in the 1940s, then deepening research on developmental economics in Latin America in the 1960s and 70s, and more recently expanding into Guatemalan studies,” said Celso Castilho
CLACX director and associate professor of history
and Caribbean studies into one cohesive curriculum and research agenda that reflects important shifts in higher education as well as broader social changes across the U.S.”
The Hispanic population in the United States is growing rapidly
Census Bureau reported that 19.1 percent (63.7 million people) of the country’s population was Hispanic—an 18 percent increase since 2013
The Vanderbilt campus has seen similar growth
with 11.9 percent of the student body identifying as Hispanic
“We’re in a moment now where the diasporic population is as large as it ever has been,” said Castilho
“This necessitates that we fundamentally change our methods
moving away from a U.S.-centered approach to a more global approach.”
Latin American studies (the study of Latin America and the Caribbean) and Latinx studies (the study of Latino and Latina people in the U.S.) have been distinct and unconnected
“In the past, the framework for study has been built on geographic borders and the political constructs at the time,” said Gretchen Selcke
assistant director of CLACX and senior lecturer of Latino and Latina studies
“But instead of insisting on these artificial borders
we are embracing the idea that these fields have to be in conversation with one another in an intentional way.”
CLACX is working to combine the existing majors in Latin American studies and in Latino and Latina studies into one
CLACX plans to launch the new major in fall 2025
Selcke said that Vanderbilt is unique in this approach because the prospect of combining these academic programs is not a conversation most institutions are having in a meaningful way
“It’s now impossible to talk about this hemisphere without talking about all these things together,” said Selcke
“These fields have to be in conversation with each other
and cultures are crossing these borders all the time
In February 2024, Castilho and Sara Kozameh, a former postdoctoral fellow at CLACX and now assistant professor of history at the University of California-San Diego, published an essay in Perspectives on History that pushes the conversation further
They researched tenure-stream job ads that called for expertise in both Latin American and Latino history—a skill set lacking in trained scholars because of the longstanding division between the two academic sectors
The article pointed to the need to train graduate students across both fields to address this new demand
CLACX is building a 21st century articulation of Latin American studies that intertwines the history
and languages of Hispanic people in Latin America and in the U.S
They’re shaping the conversation not just through academic articles
but also through in-person programming and discussions
A recent U.S. Department of Education grant reestablished CLACX as one of just 19 designated National Resource Centers for Latin American Studies in the country
CLACX founded the Consortium for Latin American Studies in the South
creating a collaborative network of regional Minority Serving Institutions
fosters connections between the institutions and serves as a hub to discuss and reimagine the nature and future of Latin American studies in the South
“We created the consortium to address and discuss the nature of Latin American studies and its relationship and integration with Latinx studies, specifically in the Southeastern U.S.,” said Avery Dickins de Girón
executive director of CLACX and senior lecturer of Latin American studies
“The consortium allows us to have conversations about these issues from different institutional perspectives.”
“The consortium not only helps us rethink the future of Latin American and Latino studies in the South
but it also helps to shape and expand curricular opportunities,” said Castilho
Castilho was recently elected president of The Conference on Latin American History
an organization that encourages the diffusion of knowledge about Latin America through fostering the study and improving the teaching of Latin American history.
“This opportunity allows me to invite more self-reflection about Latin American history in our current times
as we see a historically large Latin American diaspora in the U.S
“These connections to Latino studies are at the heart of our objectives at CLACX
and it’s exciting to place our work in these larger conversations happening in higher education.”
CLACX is transforming programming and academics on campus through valuable trans-institutional partnerships. The center routinely partners with the Blair School of Music to encourage international exchanges between faculty and Latin American musical conductors
This effort has helped strengthen programs and courses related to Latin American musical genres at Blair
including performance residencies and master classes
CLACX also provides support to School of Engineering faculty who travel with students to Guatemala
where the students repair machinery in hospitals and work on sustainability projects
as well as other faculty-led student experiences abroad
Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships Program
the center supports students studying Portuguese and K’iche’ Mayan
making Vanderbilt one of the few universities where it’s possible to study the latter
CLACX has also established a new Student Advisory Board
giving students the opportunity to provide valuable feedback
and ultimately strengthen and solidify the Latinx undergraduate academic community on campus
Locally, the center has longstanding partnerships with the Frist Art Museum, Cheekwood Estate and Gardens
supporting a wide variety of Latin American and Latinx programming with each
The center also partners closely with ReadWorks
a nonprofit that seeks to improve reading comprehension across the U.S
including staff and graduate students creating content for their “Article a Day” series for grades 4-8; graduate students translating English language texts into Spanish; and undergraduates creating original Spanish language texts for high-poverty K-8 schools with a large number of English Language Learners
more than 210,244 teachers in 60,032 schools nationwide have used content produced by CLACX
“Over the last two decades since its designation as a National Resource Center
the center has made a significant impact at the local and national levels through its programming for K-16 educators
and the general public,” said Dickins de Girón
On an international scale, CLACX and the library have intentionally developed a program to amplify the underrepresented voices of Indigenous and Afro-Hispanic populations through preserving and digitizing Vanderbilt’s rare Colombian collections so that they are openly accessible
and Latinx Studies has a long history at Vanderbilt
beginning with the inception of the Institute for Brazilian Studies in the 1940s
The program expanded its focus in the 1960s to include Latin America and was renamed the Center for Latin American Studies
the center merged with the Latino and Latina studies program
Dickins de Girón was awarded a Sesquicentennial Grant in 2023 to further investigate and document the center’s history
“Somos VU: Bringing Together Student Organizations
and the Institutional History of CLACX” will include a digital photo archive and narrative timeline and is expected to be completed this year
“CLACX’s impact on our campus and on the field more broadly cannot be understated,” said Timothy P
interim dean of the College of Arts and Science
“They continue to critically explore new ways to understand
reaching across traditional disciplinary boundaries to broaden our perspectives in critical ways.”
To honor more than 75 years of innovation and impact, CLACX is hosting an event on April 11 to look at the past
and future of Latin American and Latinx studies at Vanderbilt and beyond
The event will include a roundtable discussion with faculty
Text description provided by the architects. It was about designing the architectural project of a residential building for the corner lot located at the intersection of Castilho Street and Padre António Vieira. Until then, there was an office building - designed by architect Tomás Taveira - to which the new owner decided to give a new use, apartments, according to the high standards already present in the area. Among other buildings, the former Hotel Ritz.
© Fernando Guerra | FG+SGThe fact that the corner is located in an area where there are several buildings taller than what is common in the city, as well as the proximity to Parque Eduardo VII with a more ambitious scale, largely justify the volumetry of this tower.
Plan 03Assuming this singularity in the urban context, the intention was to relate the building to the city in a broader sense, namely with the evocation of voids (present in most buildings), materiality (white stone), and sublimation of the luminosity and lightness so characteristic of Lisbon through textures and surfaces, whose expression varies with the evolution of light.
© Fernando Guerra | FG+SGThe urban relationship is also translated into the construction of new possibilities for enjoying the extraordinary surrounding landscape, which reaches 360 degrees on the upper floors, either through the creation of large balconies or by opening new openings oriented towards the south, towards the Tagus River and São Jorge Castle, in what was once a completely blind gable.
Model 02This aspect is complemented by an extraordinarily demanding work in terms of details, which includes various original accessories designed for this work, such as the interior handle of the main door, the tap of the spa pool, and even - although its conception is not original to this building - the entirety of the exterior handles of the building and apartments.
© Fernando Guerra | FG+SGThe idea of noble scale is also explored and emphasized in the strong contrast between the stone grid that defines the facades
characterized by the application of wood and dark bronze anodized aluminum
the introduction of fluting on their surface emphasizes verticality
and explores the expression of the mineral structure of the stone

“Muscle bound” used to be a synonym for “stiff,” but we’ve come a long way from such nonsense
Just look at Daniely “Dany” Castilho—the 34-year-old IFBB Pro League women’s physique competitor who won the 2017 Arnold Classic and took third at the 2018 Olympia
160-pound Brazilian native has incorporated flexibility training to keep her injury-free
while adding the lean mass needed to help her stay atop the ever-competitive physique division
Here are her five key tips to ensure “muscle bound” remains nothing more than a myth
the women’s physique division still requires flexibility
You need to be able to move fluidly and hold poses
it’s an element I’m careful not to neglect
I’ve found that a great opportunity to do
it is right when I get up in the morning
It helps loosen up the body after a long sleep
I keep
it simple and hold poses for up to 30 seconds—things like toe touches
“I like to stretch after workouts to relieve tension in the muscles and improve blood circulation
which can help transport nutrients to muscles for recovery
I focus on the area I’ve worked—for instance
the deep side lunge and modified hurdler stretch (with the resting-leg foot on the inside of your opposite thigh) on leg day
or
the overhead triceps stretch or cross-body shoulder stretch on upper-body days
I’ll introduce a resistance band sometimes as well for additional leverage.”
“Once or twice a week I take a group fitness class that specifically centers on stretching
which teaches efficient movement patterns and involves a lot of flexibility training.”
“This doesn’t apply only to stretching but to all physical activity

various stretches

Interior designer Gracinha Viterbo wagers on the unexpected
the pleasant discovery of an unconventional aesthetic canon
she has designed the shared areas of the Castilho 203 residences in Lisbon

Perhaps this is why Gracinha Viterbo has focused on a sense of surprise in the design of the shared areas inside Castilho 203 in Lisbon
the most important residential development in Portugal
the challenge was to create spaces that would not be extraneous to the striking architecture of the building
but would also bring balance to its robust
Gracinha has attempted to understand the users
surroundings and possible scenarios inside the spaces
she has developed an almost futuristic voyage through tactile surfaces and gentle
In the lobby triple-height ceilings and large windows flood the space with natural light
combining a theatrical chandelier with a pale sofa
a kind of calling card tableau leading to the successive spaces
mingles with site-specific installations by contemporary artists
Like that of the floral designer Violetta Goldaracena positioned precisely over the reception counter of the spa
completely transforming a zone that would otherwise be rather dark
White and nude tones form a contrast with more accentuated hues of coral and raspberry

An aspiring bull rider fromj Brazil suffered a fatal heart attack after he was flung off the animal
Eighteen-year-old Thiago Castilho died after the tragic incident as he competed in a rodeo in Ribeirão Preto, a city in the southeast of the South American country, Daily Mail reported
Just eight seconds into the routine on 22 September
Mr Castilho was thrown off the bull to the shock of dozens of spectators
who dreamed of becoming a professional bull rider and joining competitions in the US
seemingly hit his neck with the fence separating the crowd and the stage
The teenager was rushed to the hospital to get medical help but suffered a fatal cardiac arrest on 23 September
His death is being treated as accidental by local authorities investigating the incident
According to local news site G1, Mr Castilho had just recently begun to join larger competitions after becoming a bull riding aficionado at a young age.
He began riding horses at age 11 and by the time he was 16, he rode a bull for the first time, Mr Castilho’s father, Jean Carlos Castilho, told the outlet.
“Unfortunately, that’s what rodeo is all about. It’s a dangerous sport. I always said to him, ‘My son, stop it’. [And he would always say,] ‘No, father, that’s what I want. If I die one day, I’m going to die happy, I’m going to die riding,” the grieving father told G1.

Six-time national chess champion Martyn Del Castilho hardly put a foot wrong and emerged a comfortable winner in the Barbados Olympic Association Independence Invitational Games (BiiG) Michael Forde Memorial Chess Championship
The top seed finished the event with six-and-a-half out of a maximum seven points to claim his second major championship of the year when the five-day event climaxed on Monday night at the Chess Centre on Exmouth Gap
After winning his first six games to be confirmed as champion before the final round
the primary interest on the final night was to see if Del Castilho could complete a clean sweep
was denied and had to settle for a draw against veteran
Teenager Kyle Sandiford took second place with five-and-a-half points
the same as third-placed Lawrence Depradine
The two players clashed in the final round in a battle for second place but played to a draw
including reigning national triple crown champion Orlando Husbands
another International Master Terry Farley and FIDE Master Justin Blackman
Del Castilho was the unquestioned favourite to win the event and completed victories against (in order) Rory Prescod
was the surprise performer of the tournament after scoring wins against three higher rated opponents
The top five was completed by Cox and Edwards
Edwards also won the prize for the best player rated between 1700 and 1751
Other sub-category winners who finished with four points also walked away with prizes
The prize for the best player rated between 1550 and 1401 went to Cyprian La Touche while the prize for the best under 1400 rated player was shared among Louis Wilson
The best female player prize was won by Gaybrianna Moore

Professional Jeweller
As a jewellery designer who’s proud of her Brazilian heritage
Alexa De Castilho is still celebrating being featured in her home nation’s edition of Harpers Bazaar – something she describes as “incredibly exciting and fulfilling”
is inspired by Alexa’s experience of growing up in Rio in the 1970s
secretly watching grown-up parties and drinking in the sights of glamorous gowns and leopard-print sofas with zebra-printed cushions
Weaving these memories into precious treasures
Alexa is now London-based and ready to make her mark on the UK jewellery market
I’m really interested to see how my work develops and is influenced by my new visual surroundings,” she says
“I’m also sharing with another jeweller for the first time and think that is going to be hugely beneficial to help bounce ideas around and to help keep me focused – so who knows what will happen.”
Despite the tricky nature of increasing overheads
and her reluctance to pass on these costs to her customers
Alexa refuses to let these worries impact her creative process; instead preferring lazy weekends with friends
“The creative part of being a designer is hugely satisfying and I love seeing my vision come to life
particularly when I see my pieces worn on the cool and beautiful women who buy them.”
Although the transformative power of jewellery is Alexa’s main driver
she’s not averse to getting stuck into the detail; whether that’s creating a spreadsheet or working on social media to entice customers to her exotic-flavoured brand
Alexa De Castilho was named a NexGems in the Professional Jeweller Hot 100 2014, in association with headline sponsor Pandora and principle partner The Company of Master Jewellers
