MOORHEAD — Tackling an international language one word at a time — and an international trip one note at a time.
That’s what members of the Concordia College Choir did Tuesday, April 29, as they prepared for an end-of-year trip to Norway and Sweden.
“We've been looking forward to it all year,” said Sam Sadlowsky, a fifth-year student at Concordia.
The choir will travel in early May, reconnecting with Concordia’s Norwegian heritage.
“It helps us just connect to the very, very beginnings of our college, when lots of Norwegian immigrants came to the United States, started a college, went to the college,” said Michael Culloton, associate professor of music. “And so we want to pay tribute to those roots by visiting there and singing for them.”
The choir has explored Norwegian music leading up to the trip. On Tuesday, students worked with Concordia Language Villages to learn basic Norwegian phrases.
“This was super helpful, because I didn't know any Norwegian coming into this,” said Emery Bell, a Concordia senior. “Being able to say 'Thank you' and 'Hello' and some subtle things will be really nice.”
Culloton said the music students were already on the right track.
“One of the things I'm most pleased about is that some of the lessons that she's teaching us today, I'm thinking, ‘Phew, that's how we've pronounced the words and the songs we're singing.’ So good work, good research,” he said.
The choir will tour for two weeks, singing in cathedrals across Oslo, Stockholm and other cities — and getting a taste of the culture along the way. The first group of choir members leaves Monday, May 5, for Stockholm. A companion tour for Concordia alumni will also take place.
The clinic, which opened in 2023 and is operated by Temple University’s Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry, and its services are available to North Philadelphia children regardless of their insurance status.
In March 2023, with the support of United Concordia Dental, Temple University’s Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry and the School District of Philadelphia partnered to open the city’s first on-site pediatric dental clinic inside the William D. Kelley School in North Philadelphia. Now, two years later, United Concordia has reaffirmed its commitment to Kornberg’s work, donating an additional $100,000 that will help support the clinic’s operations moving forward.
“We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of United Concordia Dental,” said Amid I. Ismail, dean of the Kornberg School of Dentistry. “In the past two years, the Children’s Dental Clinic at the William D. Kelley School has grown to become a vital resource for North Philadelphia children and their families, and this gift will allow us to continue promote oral health and ensure that young people in this community continue to have access to preventative care.”
The donation was delivered by United Concordia to Temple and the School District of Philadelphia during a special check presentation held Monday, Feb. 10. Representatives from all three organizations attended the event, which was also held this month in recognition of National Children's Dental Health Month.
The dental clinic at William D. Kelley School is fully staffed by Kornberg School of Dentistry faculty, staff and students, and its services offered are widespread. Patients can receive full dental care, including examination, cleaning and preventative treatments.
The clinic’s services are available to North Philadelphia children and adolescents through age 16 as well as children with special healthcare needs. Patients receive care regardless of their insurance status.
The clinic features four fully equipped dental stations, including a space specially designed to serve children with autism and other disabilities.
The opening of the Children’s Dental Clinic at William D. Kelley School in 2023 followed a five-year planning process between Temple and the School District of Philadelphia. In the future, Kornberg hopes to potentially open additional dental clinics that could further serve the Philadelphia community.
“This type of work very much aligns with both Temple University and the Kornberg School of Dentistry,” Ismail said. “At Kornberg, we have always been focused on service, particularly when it comes to providing care to the underserved and care to individuals who may have limited access to dental care. It is refreshing to have United Concordia Dental as a partner who shares this vision, and we are eager to continue partnering with them well into the future.”

The private Lutheran university notified the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) of the layoffs in a letter on March 31
“We are writing to inform you that effective May 31

“The University has provided as much advance notice as is practicable of the terminations.”

said in a statement on the university’s website

Instructional and Information Technology Services (IITS) is urging members of the university community to stay vigilant in light of an increase in cyberstalking incidents across higher education institutions
Cyberstalking involves persistent and unwanted digital harassment
such as hate-filled or threatening messages meant to intimidate
sexual harassment and other harmful behaviours.
“It’s essential to educate our community about these risks
especially when cases are on the rise,” says Mike Popoff
chief information security officer for IITS
“Online harassment can have serious psychological effects on those targeted
Take proactive steps to enhance your digital security and foster a workplace culture built on respect
collaboration and mutual support.”
Enhancing your digital security and privacy is key to preventing cyberstalking
Simply adjusting social media privacy settings and being mindful of the information you share online can make a big difference
“Our lives are so deeply intertwined with technology that we often don’t realize the risks we take,” he adds
posting vacation photos in real time can inadvertently signal that our homes are unoccupied.”
Popoff emphasizes that it’s crucial to be more vigilant about what we share when we share it
and where we store our personal information
Reviewing app permissions and access controls is becoming increasingly important to prevent sensitive data — from private conversations to financial documents and images — from falling into the wrong hands
Proactively managing your digital footprint can help protect your privacy and security in an ever-connected world.
Popoff stresses that there is no shame or embarrassment in being targeted
and perpetrators often aim to make victims feel isolated and powerless
there are clear steps you can take to protect yourself and seek support.
If you are experiencing cyberstalking:
Resources are available to help you stay safe and take control of the situation.
Cyberstalking is not only harmful, it’s a serious violation of Concordia University's Code of Rights and Responsibilities
which promotes and protects core values including civility
whether as a threat or a so-called 'joke,' can have severe academic and legal consequences,” Popoff says
“Concordia is committed to creating a safe and respectful online and campus environment for everyone.”
If you or someone you know is experiencing cyberstalking
Your safety and well-being are a priority.
A new chapter in federal politics is being shaped
13 graduates of the university were elected to the House of Commons — a testament to the breadth of Concordia’s impact in public life
The elected alumni bring with them experience from a wide range of fields
They represent a diverse cross-section of Canada’s population and geography — from urban centres and suburban ridings to northern and coastal communities

In mid-December, when Concordia University Ann Arbor issued a press release announcing the school would consolidate its operations at its North Building on Plymouth Rd
“This was exactly where this was always going all along,” one current faculty member says bitterly
“They just didn’t have the guts or the integrity to say so at the start
Nobody has admitted that yet—the Concordia brass and the Lutheran Church– Missouri Synod has said nothing about the future of the property since the December announcement
and the synod did not return several requests for comment
that U-M or EMU might snap it up for expansion
came and went quickly when both schools denied they were interested
A small part of the campus could be transferred to the church’s Michigan District
But it seems more and more likely that developers will be invited to bid on most of the 152 acres
With direct access to US-23 and thousands of feet of Huron River frontage
the former Ann Arbor city councilmember who represented Ward 2
which encompasses Concordia’s Geddes property
“I think the city still might be interested and is working on something
but there’s an offer on the [football] stadium,” she says—Domino’s founder Tom Monaghan wants it for Father Gabriel Richard Catholic High School
I did talk to the city administrator to say that once that property was on the market
because it would be great if we could [move it onto] our tax rolls.”
Loyalists fear that Concordia University of Ann Arbor’s parent school in Wisconsin cares more about theredevelopment value of its strategically placed site
The generous expanse of property was a calling card for Concordia from the start
the Missouri Synod paid $1 million for 234 acres
roughly half of the estate assembled in the 1910s by gas station magnate Harry Earhart
Other Earhart properties would become the Walden Woods subdivision
but the church got the prime riverfront property
as well as Harry and Carrie Earhart’s thirty-five-room
Architect Vincent Kling designed twenty-three academic buildings and dormitories in the 1960s modern style
according to an Associated Press article at the time
Concordia Lutheran Junior College greeted its first 236 students
The new campus was a point of pride for Lutherans across the state; 300 churches and schools had collected $500,000 to fund the luminous Chapel of the Holy Trinity
They also had a practical reason to wish it well: the postwar baby boom had doubled America’s school-age population in just ten years
and the school’s mission was to prepare teachers for Lutheran schools
When the AP returned for a follow-up article in 1966
“The campus overlooks the Huron River on the eastern edge of Ann Arbor,” the writer observed
“Classrooms and dormitories sit on a bluff
offering students a wide view of the river and wooded countryside.”
But by the time Concordia became a college in 1976
Michigan’s school-age population was declining
It’s now almost back to where it was in 1950
and the Missouri Synod’s membership has fallen by a third since Concordia opened
there was less demand for Lutheran teachers
Concordia responded by adding new programs
It began offering graduate degrees and became a university in 2001
But despite the school’s diversification and idyllic setting
there were signs that it was struggling financially
it sold a piece of property around the historic Botsford Cemetery
for a small subdivision called Pine Brae Estates
“There were threats of the school being closed a couple of times,” recalls Charles Schulz
Thomas Lutheran Church who taught theology from 2001 until last year
when he moved to Concordia University Chicago
the grass couldn’t even be mowed because we didn’t have money for that
That’s why CUAA’s merger in 2013 with Concordia University Wisconsin
It “certainly was a deliverance of the school
and it led to the school’s greatest flourishing that it had ever seen.”
The combined entity plunged millions into CUAA
funding a football stadium and a sports complex for soccer and track and renovating its fieldhouse
It added a nursing school and other health sciences programs and bought the former Cooley Law School building on Plymouth Rd
“A lot of money was invested in the Concordia campus
if you grow too fast it’s not sustainable,” says former Ann Arbor councilwoman Kathy Griswold
who represented the ward during these expansions
Yet as recently as the merger’s tenth anniversary in 2023, it was being presented as a success. “Since the merger, CUAA has seen a 60 percent growth in total enrollment,” the alumni magazine reported then
total enrollment hit an all-time high at 1,201 students.”
In a discussion posted on the schools’ blog
“I look back at my career and that’s the thing I’m most proud of
the fact that Ann Arbor is still there and that Ann Arbor is doing well and providing workers for the Church
both professionally and in the broader sense,” said enrollment VP Ken Gaschk
a property sale hinted that finances were strained: in 2022
Concordia had sold a large parcel off Earhart for $4.9 million
turned it into a luxury subdivision called Concord Pines
Erik Ankerberg took over in January after serving as provost at Concordia University Chicago
Ankerberg told the universities’ board of regents that the Michigan campus faced an “ongoing structural deficit” and would have to “significantly reduce operations.” By year’s end
he’d be the subject of countless attacks from CUAA loyalists who blamed him for abandoning the Geddes campus
Concordia’s remaining in-person classes will meet in the former Cooley Law School building at Plymouth and Green roads
Days after that came word that most in-person academic programs would also end this year
leaving only the health sciences taught in the new North Building
The final nail in the coffin was driven days later
when the regents announced that supporters’ efforts weren’t enough to make the Ann Arbor campus self-sustaining
This sequence of events confounded and angered many
Ankerberg refused to go into much detail about the deficits and which parts of it were from Ann Arbor versus the Wisconsin campus
The finances of the two schools are inextricably intertwined in most publicly reported data
and the numbers that were shared shifted over the course of the process
In February, for instance, Ankerberg said the Wisconsin campus covered about $5 million of Ann Arbor’s operating costs; in December, Concordia University System president Jamison Hardy said on the Christian Lead Time podcast that the Ann Arbor campus was on track for a $1.95 million operating deficit this school year
felt deficits could be covered by endowment money
and made the cuts needed to make Ann Arbor self-sustaining
In a statement startling in its pointedness, the Michigan District’s board of directors responded: “While some things are unclear
what is clear is that the leadership of CUWAA is intent on dramatically diminishing the scope and therefore impact of CUAA
The leadership is focusing on fewer but ‘more Lutheran’ students at the school.”
That question—whether CUAA was “Lutheran enough”—has been a central theme throughout the saga. Evan Wood, the father of a CUAA volleyball player, told the Lead Time podcast in November that a board report noted that his daughter had prayed before a match
The other central theme is a widespread suspicion that Ankerberg is less concerned with Ann Arbor’s operating deficit than the windfall Wisconsin would reap from selling the Geddes property
“It just seemed like our fate was sealed and that a thriving mission
producing quality humans and Christians and servants
and for what?” longtime CUAA football coach Chance Childers says
“I think they thought they could sell CUAA to make Concordia
Wisconsin all the more viable—and then were trying to like
While the school’s leaders “could have done a better job communicating,” he said
“they’re good people who want what’s best for the church and the gospel and yet they’re being maligned
Ankerberg is being totally and completely destroyed publicly.”
Though Hardy said he doesn’t want “to liquidate the South Campus,” all eyes now are turned northward
we will migrate all existing Ann Arbor–based university operations to the campus located at 3475 Plymouth Road in Ann Arbor,” Ankerberg wrote in a December Facebook post
we envision developing this campus into a vibrant
state-of-the-art space to meet the needs of our students
and community,” including more classrooms and student housing
Ankerberg described the curriculum as “a robust slate of healthcare programs and online education degrees.” That sounds more vocational than religious
but Ankerberg promised that they would soon add “an innovative Liberal Arts bachelor’s degree that will serve as the foundation upon which we will build out church work training programs
These adjustments will allow us to right-size our programs to steward our resources for the future,” he wrote
while continuing “a vibrant Lutheran higher education presence in Ann Arbor.”
Concordia raised $4.9 million in 2022 by selling thirty-nine acres off Earhart Rd
the downsized Concordia could win over the dispirited CUAA supporters who have watched their beloved campus be—unnecessarily
“You’re seeing a lot of impassioned reactions about the possible loss of that property,” says Schulz
“The stained glass of the chapel and the power of the organ and the wonderful landscaping created a place of peace for students to reflect on the truths of God and the bigger questions of life.”
draw people toward God and toward the beauty that He is and that He would work in our lives
… It would be a real loss for the mission of the church if we didn’t have that asset anymore.”
On Facebook
he posted an image of the industrial-looking North Building side by side with one of the pastoral Geddes landscape
“The exterior has all the charm of a parking lot,” he wrote
while “the interior has the vibe of a modern office building
more efficient university education for the future

It should also be noted that Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS) President Rev
who was part of a 3 member nominating committee
to be president of Concordia University Wisconsin & Ann Arbor (CUWAA) to the governing Board of Regents of CUWAA
Also noteworthy is that 11 of the 18 board members were brand new
and hadn’t even received their new board orientation when this monumental decision was made in February
when CUWAA President Erik Ankerberg announced that Concordia
A little background: Before Ankerberg became president in 2023
merging the Ann Arbor campus into the Wisconsin operation
Ferry’s business plan was to develop health care programs at Ann Arbor
and they bought the former Cooley Law School satellite building in Ann Arbor
where they developed health care programs which included nursing
occupational therapy and physician assistant degrees
Long serving Chief Financial Officer for over 25 years (now retired) at the Concordia
and Interim President and long serving professor at Concordia
William Cario prepared a financial report for the Board of Regents of CUWAA
Their report showed the health care revenue would cover the operational losses
of the Lutheran pastor and teacher programs at 4090 Geddes Road main campus
once the health care professors were hired and the programs reached full enrollment
Erik Ankerberg did not present that report to the board
but rather ordered another report that presented a bleak picture
and was presented to the board in February of 2024
WITHOUT including the revenue from the health care programs
and the board hastily approved Ankerberg’s decision to “reimagine,” Concordia
It was a shock to everyone on the Ann Arbor campus
especially since they were enjoying record enrollment of 1,200* students and the future financial sustainability of Concordia
While none of Ankerberg’s actions made any sense whatsoever
is on record of expressing his fear that because Concordia Universities accept government funding
he fears the government will be able to tell them what they can and cannot do and teach
Harrison is in his fourth 4 year term of being President of the LCMS
Alabama (a ministry to the African American community)
moved to become independent because of these actions
and Harrison through the LCMS is suing them
Harrison has stated that because he doesn’t want to accept government funding
it seems he wants to move toward the “Hillsdale College Model” (Hillsdale
LCMS church members have been woken up to the fact that only 30% of LCMS congregations participate in electing our LCMS president
It’s a real wake up call for the people from the Michigan District
alumni and people across the country to get involved “politically”
It is absolutely stunning what has happened
What do you think the common denominator with this mess is
What’s happening in the dark is being brought to the light
Shame on those who have destroyed a vibrant ministry that was building God’s Kingdom
and other degrees to be lights in a world that needs more of God’s love shown to them
This school literally changed my life and has affected more lives than can be fathomed and more families than anyone can fathom
I graduated with such excitement from this institution
Then both of my daughters decided (on their own) to attend
In fact my youngest daughter was chosen to speak at Dr Ankerberg’s Inaguration in Mequon
Her speach focused on family’s ties to the synodical collegiate systen and welcomed him “HOME.” I think him and many other have lost sight of home
Maybe even to the extent of God’s home
I have spent over 40+ yrs in the lcms system I have traveled all over the Midwest w jobs
and just life connections and there hasn’t been a place I have visited where Christian lives have not somehow been connected and lives changed because of this university system
There is no way to explain or find reason in these decisions other than to explain this as a horrible and tragically satanic move
More strongly I pray for those who will miss the opportunity they could have had to further God’s kingdom by becoming pastors
and positive Christian advocates when this University no longer exists
Ankerberg spun a bad story – his operating / equity mumbo jumbo made no sense bc he’s planning to do the same thing he accused Ann Arbor of doing: using capital to cover operating costs
He could care less about what a university actually does
He trusts in cash and that will haunt him because he has no idea how bad inflation is going to be from here on out
and website in this browser for the next time I comment
