TORONTO -- Jared Coreau got a little taste of what an outdoor game would be like three years ago when he was a backup on the farm
He skated on the ice at Comerica Park but did not play when the Grand Rapids Griffins played the Toronto Marlins as part of the lead-up to the 2014 Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium
Now Coreau looks to be the starter in Sunday’s rematch
when the Wings and Leafs face off outdoors in the Centennial Classic at BMO Field
While Coreau said he has not been told he is starting
he was in the starter’s net for Friday’s brief acclimatization practice
and would seem to have earned that honor on the strength of winning his past two games and outplaying Petr Mrazek
not many players get to experience games like this in their career
Steve Ott was saying this morning at breakfast
Coreau is having a special week; Thursday at Ottawa he won for the second time in three starts
and afterwards waved at his 92-year-old grandmother
who saw Coreau play at the NHL level for the first time in person
Since getting singed in a “trial-by-fire” start Dec
when the Penguins scored four unanswered goals
Coreau has looked good at Florida last Friday
“I thought last night was his best game of the three,” Wings coach Jeff Blashill said
and it is just magnified at the goaltending position
Coreau, 25, was recalled from the minors before Christmas, after Jimmy Howard was lost to a sprained knee for 4-to-6 weeks
Howard had grabbed the starting job from Mrazek
Coreau said he has found a good balance between calmness and comfort
Not being too jumpy and not looking like you’re flailing your arms everywhere
Mrazek has allowed at least three goals in six straight appearances
When I play I feel way better than I feel last year
those could be scant opportunities for Mrazek
Notes: The Wings began a light practice around 12:45 on Friday
Blashill laughed as he recalled trying to have a practice before last season’s outdoor game in balmy Denver
“It was 70 and sunny and not great for ice conditions," he said
"I think our practice lasted three minutes
it was a chance to get out there and get acclimated
the atmosphere – just sitting in the rink on the field
It looks like it’s going to be a great atmosphere.”
Sunday’s forecast shows sunshine and mid-30s temperatures
Given that goalies don’t get to move around like skaters do
Coreau figured he’d don a balaclava to help stay warm
because “there were some points when the wind picked up
Maybe throw a couple hand-warmers in your gear.”

The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has traded goaltender Jared Coreau to the St
Louis Blues in exchange for future considerations
appeared in 21 career NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings from 2016-18
214-pound goaltender went 3-6-3 record in 13 games for San Diego of the American Hockey League (AHL) this season.
Coreau owns an 88-54-14 record with a 2.52 GAA and .916 SV% in 161 career AHL games
He helped lead Grand Rapids (AHL) to a Calder Cup Championship in 2017 after going 15-4 with a 2.84 GAA and .909 SV% in 19 playoff games

DETROIT -- After Jared Coreau's first professional season
Jeff Blashill was brutally honest.Coreau was an undrafted goaltender out of Northern Michigan University who had played 25 games for the Detroit Red Wings farm teams -- five for Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League
20 for Toledo of the ECHL -- and had won one of them
He is slated to start against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Tuesday (7 p.m
a game the Red Wings badly need to win because they trail the Bruins and several other teams in the playoff race."I still have a lot to prove," Coreau said
"I just have to go in every night with the attitude to win and help the guys."Can you imagine winning one game your first professional season
How would that shake your confidence and your bosses' confidence in you
How would they?"That was a tough year," said Red Wings goaltending coach Jeff Salajko
who spent the past three seasons as the goaltending development coach in Grand Rapids
"We put a plan together for him -- not even a plan
and he took everything to heart."Coreau sought out vision training
lost about 15 pounds and saw a sports psychologist."There were definitely some doubts," Coreau said
"But one thing my mother always told me -- I think it's very true -- it's not how many times we succeed
It's how many times we fail and get up and keep moving forward
So that was a year of some mistakes and some failures
I did my best to learn from them."The vision training improved Coreau's focus and reaction time
He worked with a device made by Dynavision
a black board with circles of lights in a target pattern
In 30-minute sessions two or three times a week -- no more or he would start seeing shapes in his eyes -- he would stare at the center of the screen and hit the lights when they turned red
He sees the puck coming at him more clearly
looks the puck into his trapper and holds his stare on it for an extra second or two
the second-highest scoring team in the League
and lost 1-0 in overtime. The challenge is to keep it up and force the Red Wings to make difficult decisions in the short and long terms
Howard is skating and should be ready to return in two or three weeks
practice time and perhaps a brief stint in Grand Rapids for conditioning
With points so precious -- and the expansion draft looming in June -- the coaches and executives are evaluating game by game
"There's something to be said when a kid finds a way to win," Salajko said
if he continues to get these opportunities … we want to see: Can he handle it?"Coreau will do everything he can
he has been eating even healthier and sleeping even earlier than usual
After his 1-0 win against Price and the Canadiens
the guy who won once his first pro season celebrated by eating chicken
spinach salad and veggies at the rink and going to bed about 11."With the magnitude of the opportunity
it's fairly easy [to keep a narrow focus]," Coreau said
"This is the level that everyone works to get to."
But the Bruins beat him on their first two shots on goal on Tuesday
the fourth time they scored twice in the opening minute of a game in their 94-year history
They scored again in the first period to take a 3-2 lead over the Red Wings
The Wings pulled him early in the second period after he allowed his fourth goal on 16 shots
The Bruins went on to a 6-5 win in overtime
“It is an advantage to see some game time,” Coreau said after the morning skate and Jeff Blashill’s announcement that the 26-year-old would get his first start of the season
10 days and four games after the Wings traded Petr Mrazek
if you put your work in at practice and you bring the same intensity in practice as you do in games
In an optional practice in TD Garden Monday
Coreau provided shooting practice for 14 Red Wings
DETROIT RED WINGS SCHEDULE
to a 3.46 goals against average and .887 save percentage
where his play became integral to the Griffins' Calder Cup
and Coreau found himself back in the AHL this season
The Red Wings talked about the need for the best goaltending they could obtain from Howard and Mrazek to make the playoffs
But Mrazek played in only 13 games in the first half of the schedule
Playing on a line with Dylan Larkin and Anthony Mantha at the start of the season
lost to waivers last season only to be reclaimed
scored three goals in his first four games
Frk went on to score three goals in three games
While it is more difficult scoring on the lower lines
his all-around play and skating make it more difficult to defend against the top lines of other teams
“He told me to play with confidence,” Frk said
Blashill said Frk playing on the lower lines means he must “grind it out.”
you’ve always got to go do it right,” he said
“Make sure they don’t lock you in your zone

.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Ansar Khan | akhan1@mlive.comDETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings started the season with $9.3 million committed to the goaltending position
Now they're leaning on goalie making just above the minimum salary to help keep their playoff hopes afloat
Jared Coreau wasn't tested a lot on Monday afternoon
He made 18 saves for his second shutout in four starts
leading the Red Wings past the Montreal Canadiens 1-0 at Joe Louis Arena
Coreau has started back-to-back games against two of the best teams in the NHL
and there's no reason to believe he won't start Wednesday against the Boston Bruins
He has started seven of the past 11 games and improved to 5-1-1
"He played very well tonight," Price said
He fills up a lot of net and keeps his game simple
I'm sure his coaches like that."
Coreau has seized the opportunity created by Jimmy Howard's knee injury and Petr Mrazek's inconsistency
who skated Monday for the first time since getting hurt on Dec
who improved his goals-against average to 2.70 and save percentage to .911
"It certainly was a good game tonight and a good game the other night," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said
"I talk lots about how this league is every single day
You better show up every day to be great and that just gives you a chance to compete
Said Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg: "I think he just plays with confidence
He battles through traffic; there's a lot of players in front of him
He plays the puck well when the puck is coming to him."
"I try not to get too high," Coreau said
but when you get a shutout it's definitely a team effort
but there are some big blocks in there and we got a post that went our way
so I think defensively and overall we just played a real good game."
The Red Wings managed only 20 shots and the only one that got past Price was Thomas Vanek's net-front deflection at 18:14 of the second period
"I look down and I know it's him
but at the end of the day whether it's Carey Price or another goalie
if it's a breakaway from Sidney Crosby or any other player
we still have to score goals and I still have to save shots," Coreau said
If you think about something too much or one player
it'll consume you and distract you from the big picture."
Coreau said being calm and sound technically have been keys to his success
"You just try not to get stretched out too much," Coreau said
"I think when you just stay within your cage
Just not getting too scrambly and keeping the puck in front of me."
Blashill is showing a lot of confidence in Coreau
"Around here you have to earn the games you get whether you're a forward
"You just have to keep playing well and work hard in practice and ultimately
and whenever you're called upon you just have to do your job and make the most of it."
This was only Coreau's second appearance at the Joe
"The atmosphere is great," Coreau said
It's exciting and I like playing here
Sometimes I lose the puck up on the glass so maybe the lighting can be a little bit better
but overall it's a fun building to play in with a lot of history here and I think a lot of guys take pride in."

Jared Coreau thinks more about his mealtimes
As he grabs for the starting job with the Detroit Red Wings, the 6-foot-6 rookie goaltender is showing the focus that took him from winning one game in his first year of pro hockey to playing at the highest level of the sport. He was slated to get his third straight start tonight
having gained a foothold since being recalled last month
“One thing my mother always told me is it’s not how many times we succeed
it’s how many times we can fail and get up and keep moving forward,” Coreau said
With Jimmy Howard injured and Petr Mrazek not excelling like he was last season at this time
Coreau is the Wings’ go-to guy in net for now
The man who helped guide him to 29 victories last season in Grand Rapids knows why
“I’ve always said bigger goalies take longer to develop,” goaltending coach Jeff Salajko said
and that has just flowed into this season.”
it will be Coreau whom the Wings protect in the NHL expansion draft this summer (teams can only protect one goaltender)
Coreau is in line with the locker room mantra of one game at a time
“You try to enjoy it a little bit but stay humble,” Coreau said when asked about shutting out Montreal on Monday
his second shutout in eight career NHL games
because he’s had some interviews in years past that weren't as humble,” Salajko said with a smile
“But he is really maturing in that department
he is a smart goalie and he’s got good technique and he's got a good structural foundation.”
after three seasons overseeing goaltending in the farm clubs
He and Coreau started working together in spring of 2013
when the Wings signed Coreau as a free agent after three years at Northern Michigan
The 2013-14 season couldn’t have been much uglier for Coreau: He went 0-4 with a 4.39 goals-against average and .873 save percentage with the Griffins
he went 1-12-6 with a 4.03 GAA and .879 save percentage
“To go through what he went through that first year
his career was in serious jeopardy,” Salajko said
“There was a point where I didn’t know if he would get to this point
and he had the work ethic and the dedication and perseverance that he could turn it around
When Coreau was called up to Grand Rapids his second season
“He made big changes in his game from year one to year two
and he started to really build a résumé in the American league,” Wings coach Jeff Blashill said
“That’s the first area where you start to gain confidence in a guy
and the more they do it on a consistent basis
One of the steps Coreau has taken is figuring out the right approach for him — such as being calm
It’s one of the many ways he has been helped by Salajko
“One of the best things about his coaching is that he played eight years pro
he's been with different organizations and he's seen how different things work
but his philosophy and his life lessons experiences that he tells me in comparison to things I'm going through
Coreau gave up four goals in his first start
then gave up three goals but still pulled out a shootout victory in his second game
“They weren't his cleanest games,” Salajko said
five games at this level to really get accustomed to it.' You're seeing that with him now — the confidence
he has changed his habits just a little bit
for the sake of doing everything possible to stick around
it’s even that extra step toward being that much healthier
but that little bit more will help in the long run.”

the Detroit Red Wings picked a good time to bring up goalie Jared Coreau to replace traded Petr Mrazek
The 26-year-old Coreau practiced with the Red Wings on Tuesday and is expected to back up Jimmy Howard when they host Nashville tonight
who was traded Monday night to Philadelphia
who went unclaimed when waived by the Red Wings out of camp and returned to the Grand Rapids Griffins
he was named the league's Player of the Week after consecutive shutouts on the road last week against Western Conference-leading Manitoba
the 6-foot-6 Coreau has gone 13-2-3 with a 1.92 goals against average and a 0.933 save percentage in 18 appearances
During that span the Griffins have gone from being five games under 0.500 (10-15-1-3) to 10 games over 0.500 (28-18-1-6)
"He's going to be fine," Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said of Coreau on Tuesday
I don't think it's going to faze him."
Coreau has a 2.47 GAA and .916 save percentage
Barring any further action before Monday's trade deadline
Coreau will get his second extended look with the Red Wings
he appeared in 14 games following an injury to Howard and finished with mixed results
He had two shutouts but was also pulled in three other starts
he had a 3.46 GAA and .887 save percentage
the Griffins on Tuesday brought up Matej Machovsky from ECHL's Toledo Walleye for Wednesday's home game against Chicago
in his first professional season in North America
leads the ECHL in GAA with a 2.02 mark while also placing third with a 0.928 save percentage
He has an 11-9-1 record with two shutouts in 21 games with the Walleye and has won four of his last six outings
The advice to sign Jared Coreau came after a night he let in half-a-dozen goals
the Detroit Red Wings have seen much to like
and backed that up by signing Corea to a two-year contract Wednesday
It's worth $575,000 in the NHL/$150,000 in the minors in year one and $650,000 in year two
The fact it morphs from two-way deal to one-way indicates how highly Wings management thinks of the 6-foot-5
“We see him as our top goalie prospect,” assistant general manager Ryan Martin told the Free Press
“He went from one victory his first year pro to almost 30 last season.”
after he'd played at Northern Michigan from 2011-12 through 2012-13
He split 2013-14 between the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) and Toledo Walleye (ECHL)
going winless in five appearances with the Griffins
Coreau finished 2015-16 at 29-15-2 with a .922 save percentage that was tied for fourth in the AHL and a 2.43 goals-against average that ranked 10
Coreau has been called up by the Wings to have in reserve
That's almost certain to change this coming season
“We expect he will be recalled at some point
Coreau uses his third year of pro hockey to show he can be the Wings’ backup in 2017-18
It was former goaltender Chris Osgood who pushed for the Wings to add Coreau to the fold
“Chris Osgood deserves the majority of credit for us signing him as a free agent,” Martin said
“Ozzie saw him once and he let in six goals
“Ozzie really liked the foundational skills he saw in him.”
he gained from the tutelage of Jeff Salajko
who earlier this summer was promoted from goaltending development coach to goaltending coach with the Wings
“Jared would be the first to admit his adjustment to the pro game was a bit of a challenge,” Martin said
“He got in better shape and worked a lot with Jeff
Coreau filed for arbitration by Tuesday’s deadline for restricted free agents
NOTEBOOK: The Wings filed for arbitration with goaltender Petr Mrazek
The sides will continue to talk ahead of an arbitration hearing
Danny DeKeyser filed for arbitration Tuesday

.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Ansar Khan | akhan1@mlive.comDETROIT - Jared Coreau will get another opportunity to earn his first win of the season for the Detroit Red Wings tonight
when he starts in the season finale against the New York Islanders at Little Caesars Arena
"He's a pending unrestricted free agent," coach Jeff Blashill said
"We want to get as many looks at him as we possibly can
with a 4.35 goals-against average and .859 save percentage
The Red Wings placed Coreau on waivers today
he will be assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins
where he will try to help the AHL club defend its Calder Cup championship
Forward Luke Glendening will return to the lineup tonight after missing one game with an upper-body injury
Blashill said he mistakenly declared earlier in the week that Glendening was out for the season
"There was more evaluation that took place and Luke is able to play tonight," Blashill said
Glendening replaces Luke Witkowski in the lineup
Here are the Red Wings' anticipated lines:
Gustav Nyquist-Henrik Zetterberg-Tyler Bertuzzi
Andreas Athanasiou-Frans Nielsen-Justin Abdelkader
Mats Zuccarello came gliding across the ice
heading toward the net on a two-man break-away
Detroit Red Wings goalie Jared Coreau readied for a deke
That’s the biggest thing he has learned after playing just 10 games for the Red Wings
how fast they could get it off,” Coreau said
So there was no way he would get caught off guard
“Zuccarello has unbelievable hands,” Coreau said, after the Wings lost in overtime 1-0 to the New York Rangers
Coreau committed to the shot and Zuccarello quickly passed to J.T
I’ll play a little bit more loose and be ready to go across,” Coreau said
It looked like he could have made a move.”
“And then he passed it quick,” Coreau said
it was another learning moment for this calm
there were plenty of positives after this game
a team that came into this game ranked second in the league averaging 3.45 goals per game
“He played well again,” Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said of Coreau
“The goaltending has been really good lately.”
The Wings have earned eight of 10 possible points in their last five games
But if they could just get their power play to improve slightly
their chances of getting into the playoffs would improve dramatically
I think we have been really good,” Coreau said
weren’t playing quite up to their standards
we have had only one period where we may want back
Wings coach Jeff Blashill actually saw this improvement coming
before it started to show on the scoreboard
“I’d go before we started getting points,” he said
“I thought we were playing pretty good hockey
but we weren’t getting results necessarily
we are seeing we are getting a little more results
This is a precarious time for the Red Wings
Will they make the playoffs for the 26th straight season
Or will they be out of it at the trading deadline and limp out of the Joe
The Wings are getting healthier and playing better
Then, wouldn’t you know it, Thomas Vanek was hurt in a most unmentionable way
Coreau sees all kinds of improvement with this team
"We have poise with the puck right now,” he said
It’s a tough team to play against when teams are doing that.”

Red Wings goaltender Jared Coreau picked up his first NHL win on Dec
OTTAWA - As special as Jared Coreau's first NHL start was earlier this month
Coreau will be starting in goal for the Detroit Red Wings in Ottawa
will watch him play in person for the first time
which is probably the biggest thing," Coreau told DetroitRedWings.com following the morning skate at Canadian Tire Centre
"She's never seen me play a hockey game before
Coreau expects to have 20 or more friends and family members at the game
following Daniel Alfredsson's jersey retirement ceremony
"Pretty exciting," Coreau told media at the skate
but it's something I think every player looks forward to that's from North America
playing near their hometown and having people there to support them."
He watched about 30 games in this building as a fan but never played here as a youth
"In this very locker room I (attended) a hockey camp here once," Coreau said
"They brought us in here and whoever could guess where Wayne Gretzky sat in his last game here won a signed Marian Hossa card or something like that
I looked to see if (the stall) was still signed but I think they removed the piece of wood that was there."
3 and beating Florida 4-3 in a shootout on Dec
He is happy to be starting on Alfredsson's night
"I watched him a lot growing up," Coreau said
"Meeting him at (Red Wings) camp my first year was pretty amazing
I'm pretty honored to be here for his big night
I think there will be quite a few people in the stands getting pretty emotional
There will be a lot of emotion in the building."
posting a 3.11 goals-against average and .896 save percentage
He has allowed three or more goals in six consecutive appearances
The Red Wings held an optional morning skate
Here are the lines they skated with on Wednesday:
Tomas Tatar-Henrik Zetterberg-Anthony Mantha
Riley Sheahan-Dylan Larkin-Luke Glendening
The way Jared Coreau closed out his second career NHL appearance likely means he’s looking at third one when the Detroit Red Wings emerge from Christmas vacation
The Wings host the Buffalo Sabres Tuesday, the rare home appearance amid a stretch of playing 10 of 11 games on the road. They entered the three-day Yuletide break buoyed by a 4-3 shootout victory Friday at Florida, which saw Coreau shine late in the game
He stopped all 13 shots the Panthers fired his way in the third period
“I thought he played well,” coach Jeff Blashill said afterwards
“He made big saves in the third period to allow us the 'W.' He found a way to win.”
1 goaltender Petr Mrazek has had that Coreau got the Florida start
Mrazek had lost the starting job to Jimmy Howard before Howard suffered a sprained knee Dec.20 that will sideline him at least through January
Mrazek has given up at least three goals his last six games
leading to a .899 save percentage and 3.06 goals-against average after 20 games
Howard played so well he has a .934 save percentage and 1.96 goals-against average
As Thomas Vanek said after the Florida game
After seeing a two-goal lead disappear in his first NHL start
Coreau’s emphasis going into Friday was on performing better in the third period
holding the opponent at bay to enable teammates to rally
Whether it’s one goal down or up one goal or tie game
you know that each team is going to press a lot and get their chances
So you have to be on your toes and make all the saves that you can make.”
1997 team honored: Members of the 1997 Stanley Cup champion Wings will be reunited for a pregame ceremony Tuesday night
Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the 7:30 p.m
Some fans will be selected for autographed jerseys from members of the 1997 team
and the Campbell Bowl will be on display outside Section 112

with a 3.27 GAA and .893 save percentage this season.
with five days off from games and practices
will send goaltender Jared Coreau to the Grand Rapids Griffins for a conditioning stint this weekend
That's because Jimmy Howard isn't ready to play
The Griffins host the Milwaukee Admirals Friday and Saturday
Coreau will then rejoin the Red Wings for practice Monday before their three-game Western Canada trip that starts Tuesday in Vancouver
Coreau's most recent start was a 6-3 loss in Minnesota on Feb
The Red Wings originally hoped Howard would be ready for that conditioning stint
But he's experienced a couple of setbacks after suffering a sprained MCL on Dec
"He hasn't made as much progress as we wanted him to," coach Jeff Blashill said following Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the New York Islanders at Joe Louis Arena
"He still can't do certain things in the butterfly position
"It's a tough injury for a goalie
It's to a large degree a similar injury that kept (Montreal's) Carey Price out most of last year
but we're going to have to take it day by day."
When he first joined the Detroit Red Wings organization
Jared Coreau was a spectator for the AHL playoffs
and broke the Crunch’s 10-game home winning streak
Coreau talked about what this run means to him
and the encouragement he gets from Griffins coach Todd Nelson
“Nellie always talks to me about giving the team a chance to win,” Coreau said
“I think that is just my mind-set going into every game - it’s not so much about thinking I am going to have a good game
it is just believing that I am playing for the crest on the front and the guys in the room.”
Coreau’s story since being signed as a free agent in April of 2013
He won one game his first year of pro hockey – and it was in the ECHL
but he spent nearly three months with the Wings
briefly supplanting Petr Mrazek as starter and earning two shutouts among 14 appearances.
and playing in the East Coast and not having much success there and no success up here - it’s been a big improvement phase for me over the last few years,” Coreau said
“Winning the Calder Cup would be a huge accomplishment for my career.”
What’s next in his career is hazy. Coreau, 25, is no longer waiver exempt. He’ll be exposed in the NHL expansion draft this month
but it is doubtful Vegas would take him given how many NHL veterans are likely to be available
If the Wings don’t trade either Petr Mrazek or Jimmy Howard
there will be three goaltenders vying for two jobs in training camp
“It’s something I can’t help but notice,” Coreau said
“My mum is always reading things and talks about it
I don't want to think about it because at the end of the day
it is not in my control what Detroit decides to do
it’d be in a backup role – and that’s why he’s pondering some summer reading
He struggled when he wasn’t playing regularly
“It’s something that (Wings goaltending coach) Jeff Salajko and I talked about because for the last three seasons now with Grand Rapids
So that’s why it’s impressive these backup goalies in the NHL can do their job so well
they have to sit on it for maybe 12 days before they get to play again
because that would be my role if I was to be up there next year
I have to just be ready whenever I am called upon - could be one every four
It’s a mindset and it’s something I will think a lot about in the summer
Maybe pick up a couple magazines - articles about guys that take about it
or try to reach out to some guys about it and see if there are little tricks.”
the Detroit Red Wings are relying on Jared Coreau to spread joy
Their big third-string goalie will be making his second career NHL appearance as the Wings take on the Florida Panthers (7:30 p.m., FS-Plus) at the BB&T Center. Coreau was called up Wednesday to offset the loss of Jimmy Howard, who is out 4-6 weeks with a sprained knee
“I'm just treating it as another game,” Coreau said
“I want to get a win and help the team get two points
I'm thankful for the opportunity and I’m going to make the best of it.”
The decision doesn’t reflect well on Petr Mrazek
with a 3.06 goals-against average and .899 save percentage
3 debut at Pittsburgh but played better than his 4.14 goals-against average and .889 save percentage reflect
and we decided to give Jared a shot here tonight
and I think he can give us elite goaltending tonight.”
but Blashill said that everyone who played Tuesday (besides Howard
Henrik Zetterberg was with Anthony Mantha and Tomas Tatar
Frans Nielsen with Gustav Nyquist and Thomas Vanek
Luke Glendening with Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou (boy
can that line skate) and Riley Shehan with Steve Ott and Drew Miller
Note: The Red Wings' postponed game at the Carolina Hurricanes from Monday has been rescheduled for March 27 in Raleigh
That means the teams will play each other on back-to-back nights
Goaltender Jared Coreau is among the prospects who will be counted on to carry the Detroit Red Wings’ top farm team into the playoffs. The Grand Rapids Griffins begin their AHL Calder Cup campaign Friday at Van Andel Arena
when they host the Milwaukee Admirals in a first-round series that continues Sunday before switching to Milwaukee for Game 3
“We have to get off to a good start because in a five-game series
things can happen quickly,” Griffins coach Todd Nelson told the Free Press Thursday afternoon
“We’ve got to get both games here at home and hopefully close out in Milwaukee
but Milwaukee has played us close all year
“Jared will start and hopefully be a part of our whole run.”
The Griffins are packed with Wings prospects
The Wings announced on Thursday a three-year
entry-level contract for forward Christoffer Ehn
a fourth-round pick from 2014 who had 13 points in 52 games last season in the Swedish Hockey League
the Wings’ first-round pick from last summer’s draft
Ehn is with the Griffins to absorb the playoff experience
is obligated to return to Sweden for another year because he is under 22
but there’s value for him to have made the trip to Grand Rapids
but it is important for the young guys to see what AHL games are like,” Nelson said
“It puts them in a good position for the future
it is a nice way for us to see them and evaluate their talent
It’s more intimate than development camp.”
Nelson pointed to the Admirals’ grittiness as a reason why Hronek might not start the series – he is more of a finesse player
Bertuzzi and Eric Tangradi figure as good countermeasures against the Admirals
and there is hope Martin Frk (who led the Griffins with 27 goals) will return from injury during the series
Coreau went 19-11-3 in Grand Rapids with a 2.33 goals-against average and .917 save percentage
where he went 5-4-3 with a 3.46 goals-against average and .887 save percentage
but he was less steady as he took on more of a backup role
His performance in the Griffins playoffs will be of especial interest to Wings management
as they have to decide if Coreau is ready for full-time backup duties in Detroit next season since he will no longer be waiver exempt
Ontario — There probably wasn’t a ton of hockey fans inside Canadian Tire Centre cheering for Red Wings goalie Jared Coreau
but especially with Thursday’s game being the game the team raised Daniel Alfredsson’s No
who will be attending the game to watch her grandson
The fact Patricia was expected to attend was one of the exciting aspects of the evening for Coreau
“She’s pretty occupied with knitting and going to Tim Hortons on her motorized scooter,” Coreau said
Thursday’s start was one Coreau will remember on many levels
and attended games at Canadian Tire Centre
He even participated in a goaltending clinic one summer at the NHL arena
Coreau was more a fan of particular goalies (Curtis Joseph was his favorite) but pulled for the Senators as a youngster
especially when they had those good years,” Coreau said
“The year they went to the Finals (in 2007
Family and friends were in attendance Thursday as the Red Wings opened a seven-game road trip
“Pretty cool,” said Coreau of the chance to start
“Whether I start or not I’ve got family that’s going to the game
“It’s the rink I used to go watch NHL games.”
The fact Coreau earned the start in Ottawa wasn’t surprising considering goaltender Petr Mrazek’s ineffective performance (four goals on 22 shots) in Tuesday's loss to Buffalo
it was mildly surprising coach Jeff Blashill didn’t go back to Coreau Tuesday after the young goaltender defeated Florida Friday
“A step in the right direction,” said Coreau of the victory over Florida
in which he stopped 31 shots and two of three in the shootout
“Towards that confidence to go onto each game and be a winner
You watch the best goalies that have winning records over their career
don’t look jumpy and they don’t look out of sorts
“It’s just a step towards that ultimate goal of being comfortable every game and playing my best every night.”
and Coreau’s teammates were impressed with the way Coreau shut the door on Florida
after Coreau lost a two-goal lead against Pittsburgh during the third period in his NHL debut Dec
“He’s a big goalie and he wants to play at his level,” forward Thomas Vanek said
he made big saves in the third period to allow us to get the win in the end
You have to find a way to win and he found a way to win.”
Coreau wants to carry over his success this season in Grand Rapids to the NHL
I started winning down in the AHL (with Grand Rapids) and I kept winning
you just go into every game with a confidence to win,” Coreau said
Coreau gives up his final year of eligibility for a pro contract
Northern Michigan junior netminder Jared Coreau is finishing up the details on a free agent contract with the Detroit Red Wings
and confirmed by Northern Michigan beat reporter Matt Wellens
Coreau put up a more than respectable 2.70 goals against average and .919 save percentage on a Northern Michigan that struggled to a 10th place finish in the CCHA this year
Coreau's biggest asset may be that unlike other goalies to have success at the NCAA level
Coreau will most likely start his pro career with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL
Petr Mrazek appears to be righting himself just in time to help the Detroit Red Wings
His numbers headed into Sunday’s game against the New York Rangers do not impress
but his last few performances have indicated he has made significant progress in working himself out of a first-half funk
“I think he has trended in the right direction for a number of games, and even games where he has given up more goals than he wants to and we want him to, I think he's still played real well,” coach Jeff Blashill said after Mrazek made 34 saves in Friday's 3-2 overtime loss at Buffalo
I think he is certainly trending inn the right direction.”
Mrazek looked especially good against the Sabres facing 28 shots the first two periods
“That's quite a bit of shots against,” defenseman Danny DeKeyser said
He looked good and hopefully he grows off of that performance.”
The two biggest reasons the Wings are on the outside of the playoff picture after fall on mediocre goaltending from Mrazek and an inept power play
Mrazek stole two points for the Wings back in October when they played at St
but then came such a tumultuous stretch his numbers show sit at a 3.13 goals-against average and .895 save percentage
after which he was relegated to backing up Jared Coreau for two games
When Mrazek replaced Coreau midway through the farce that was the first period of the Boston game
Mrazek made 23 saves to help the Wings to victory
Mrazek himself has said he feels better than his numbers indicate
acknowledging a recent uptick in performance
you are trying to build confidence and play as best you can
The Wings re-signed Mrazek last summer for two years, $8 million
simultaneously declaring him their starter
and Jimmy Howard played so much better he had grabbed the starting reins twice by the time he suffered a sprained knee Dec
20 (he missed two weeks after a groin injury Nov
Howard won’t be back until after the All-Star break
he likely will be sent to Grand Rapids to get in a conditioning game before returning to NHL action
The thinking within the club is that Coreau is ready for the NHL full-time
and he may well end up being the goalie the Wings protect in the expansion draft this summer
If Mrazek gets on a roll – remember last year around this time
he was playing so well that by mid-February he’d generated a .933 save percentage and 1.94 goals-against average that both ranked first among NHL goaltenders who’d have played at least 25 games – then maybe the Wings are in the playoff picture when their bye week arrives
meaning the Wings will know a week before the March 1 trade deadline whether they have a realistic chance of making the playoffs
as Coreau has impressed better than his numbers (3.04 GAA
.901 save percentage) and Howard (1.96 GAA
.934 save percentage) has played the best hockey of his career
Coreau is young (25) and cheap (signed through 2017-18 with a cap hit of just $612,500)
and would be hard to move with two more seasons at a cap hit of $5.3 million
he either helps the Wings into the playoffs
Either way would be going in the right direction

That would be good for Coreau, not so much for the Red Wings. Detroit is 26th in the NHL with 72 points. If that's where the team finishes after its final two games, it will have a 7.5 percent chance to win the NHL draft lottery and select defenseman Rasmus Dahlin with the first pick
They would have a 23.3 percent chance of landing in the top three
The Red Wings might improve their odds by losing their final two games
they will have an 8.5 percent chance at the No

The size of goalies and their equipment varies greatly between the likes of Red Wings netminder Jared Coreau (left) and Hall of Famer Gump Worsley
DETROIT - NHL scoring has been dropping fairly consistently for more than three decades
Since teams averaged 4.01 goals in 1981-82 - that was the second-highest number since the league's formative years - scoring has proven to be been more and more difficult
Although scoring is up slightly this year after declining in four of the past five years
the 2.77 average number of goals per team is still a long way from that aforementioned 4.01 of 35 seasons ago
It's one of the reasons the NHL has reduced the size of pants the goalies can wearing
when the Red Wings' Petr Mrazek wore the smaller pants for the very first time and turned aside 42 shots in a 1-0 victory over the Nashville Predators
Mrazek said he had no issue with the new streamlined pants while fellow Red Wings' netminder Jared Coreau - who stands 6-foot-6
222 pounds - said he thought the new pants actually felt bigger than the ones he wore last season
Coreau has been wearing the new pants all season - his first in the NHL - and has a 5-2-3 record
3.01 goals-against average and .901 save percentage with two shutouts
the new pants don't seem to be increasing scoring although it's a small sample with only two days worth of games in the books
Mrazek was one of two goalies to record a shutout on the day the new pants became a requirement
Peter Budaj stopped 17 shots for the Kings in a 1-0 win over the Flyers
Although goals were up slightly across the board Saturday compared to the season average
Teams averaged 2.92 goals in the 13 games played Saturday compared to the league average of 2.77
the average number in three games dropped to 2.17 thanks to Philipp Grubauer's shutout for the Capitals in 5-0 win over the Kings and Cam Talbot's 1-0 victory for Edmonton vs
that's obviously a small sample size but you get the picture: It's probably going to take more than tighter pants to increase scoring
Cutting down on the size of a goalie's pads is probably the quickest way to increase scoring
The NHL's general managers discussed decreasing the size of equipment last March but the only thing that was changed was the pants
The chest protectors and pads goalies were on their legs remained the same
Add it all up and is it any surprise the NHL has had nine players with at least 50 goals during the past seven full seasons combined compared to 1981-82
when Wayne Gretzky scored a league-record 92 to top 10 players with at least 50
When Steve Yzerman scored a Red Wings-record 65 goals in 1988-89
he was one of six players who scored at least 50
a list that was topped by Mario Lemieux (85) and Bernie Nicholls (70)
Only one player - Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby - is on pace to score 50 this season
"Ultimately, we have to acknowledge that the goaltending position, the athletes, the technique, has greatly improved in the last 20 years," Yzerman, now general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning, told NHL.com
and the technical part of the position has greatly improved
"But the goaltenders' equipment has grown incredibly
better technique and equipment makes it difficult
We don't want them to be less of an athlete and less technically good
but we have to get some control over this equipment."
The NHL considered reducing the size of the chest protector a year ago before deciding the pants would be the only change made this season
The NHL hoped to require goalies to wear the smaller pants at the beginning of the season but manufacturers weren't able to produce them quickly enough so the deadline was pushed back to Feb
The fact that many goalies are also physically bigger these days hasn't helped scoring either
some of the NHL's bigger goalies include Tampa Bay's Ben Bishop (6-7
178 when he led the NHL with 32 wins in 1981-82
165 when he won 40 games for the Red Wings to lead the NHL in 1964-65 and the legendary Gump Worsley won four Stanley Cups in a 21-year career despite standing 5-7
With bigger goalies wearing larger equipment
there are some people in the NHL who think the size of the nets should be increased
That group includes former Red Wings coach Mike Babcock
who is now behind the Maple Leafs' bench
"It's impossible to score," Babcock said in a story by The Hockey News
You go to 1980 when the puck went in the net
You got the average size of the goalies in the NHL and the average size of the net
The net's too small for the size of the goalies
The goalies are too good for the size of the net."
Assuming you'd like to see more scoring in the NHL
DETROIT (WXYZ) -- The Red Wings assigned five players
The group headed to the Griffins also includes forwards Matt Lorito and Ben Street
along with defensemen Brian Lashoff and Dylan McIlrath
Detroit assigned defenseman Libor Sulak to Finland and placed forwards Eric Tangradi
and Evgeny Svechnikov on injured reserve to bring the active roster to 24 players
The Red Wings open the regular season Thursday night against Minnesota at Little Caesars Arena

The Detroit Red Wings like what they see in the play of prospect goaltender Jared Coreau, writes Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press
The 25-year-old goalie is dominating in the AHL playoffs as he leads the Grand Rapid Griffins in their playoff run
He stopped 26 of 27 stops Saturday to win Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals against the San Jose Barracuda
he made 16 saves in the final period to stave off six Barracuda power play opportunities
He has aided the Griffins to an 8-1 record in the playoffs and could be a prime candidate to take over backup duties in Detroit next season
The team currently has veteran Jimmy Howard in net as the starter and 25-year-old Petr Mrazek as the backup
Coreau spent three months with Detroit after Howard suffered a knee injury and played well in spots
1 outdoor game against Toronto over Mrazek
His 3.47 GAA in 14 games wasn’t always pretty
but there were shining moments through his stint at the pro level as well
As reported a week ago
the Red Wings may be looking to move on from the 33-year-old Howard
Despite his 3.04 GAA in 50 games this season
many believe that Mrazek is ready to move up into a starting role and Coreau’s recent success will only aid the Red Wings endeavors to find a taker for Howard’s contract
Detroit Red Wings Jared Coreau| Jimmy Howard| Petr Mrazek
understand that but trying to get rid of Howard contract will be hard
but would it be all that bad for a goalie needy team to acquire Howard to be their starter
when is last time Howard stayed healthy 3 or 4 years ago
They need to get rid of more than Howard and his contract

The Grand Rapids Griffins aren’t going to repeat as Calder Cup champions
The Griffins saw their opportunity to defend the championship end Monday when they lost 5-1 to the Manitoba Moose in the deciding fifth game of their first-round series
Manitoba won the series 3-2 — the teams alternated victories through the five games — and advances to play Rockford in the second round
Manitoba’s Cameron Schilling scored with 13 seconds left in the second period
Brendan Lemieux and Chase De Leo (empty net) in the third period
Matt Puempel (power play) scored for the Griffins in the first period
Griffins goalie Jared Coreau stopped 24 of 28 shots
while Manitoba’s Eric Comrie made 32 of 33 saves
.st1{fill-rule:evenodd;clip-rule:evenodd;fill:#2a2a2a}By Brendan Savage | bsavage@mlive.comJared Coreau played every minute in goal last spring as the Grand Rapids Griffins won the Calder Cup for the second time in five years
He also saw considerable action with the Detroit Red Wings
filling in admirably while Jimmy Howard was on the shelf with a knee injury and Petr Mrazek was struggling to find his game
it would only make sense that Coreau would be the next man up if the Red Wings move either Howard or Mrazek at some point this season or one of them goes down and Detroit needs an emergency replacement
who would replace Coreau in Grand Rapids if he makes the jump to the NHL
The Red Wings signed the 24-year-old netminder as a free agent last season after inviting him to their development camp and liking what they saw
He spent the 2016-17 season with Plzen HC in his native Czech Republic before signing a one-year contract with the Red Wings
"Last year I was coming here a free agent
who was back at the development camp in Traverse City again this year
"I said I'm going to give it my 100 percent and see what you got and I stayed in touch with Detroit for the whole season and I got signed so I was pretty happy about it
"We have a rookie tournament in September so we got to start there and see how it goes
If I got invite to main camp and get a chance there
187-pound Machovsky is one of three goalies that will play for the Red Wings in the prospects tournament
The others are free agents Kaden Fulcher and Corbin Boes
Since Machovsky is the only one of the three under contract
it makes sense that he will get the majority of playing time in the prospects tournament
he'll battle Coreau and Thomas McCollum for a job in Grand Rapids since Howard and Mrazek are entrenched in Detroit
"That's the depth we've got in the organization," said Red Wings assistant general manager Ryan Martin
"The Detroit Red Wings training camp itself will figure out where those guys end up at the end of the day
Jared and Tommy have to go through waivers in order to go down to the minors so there's always the possibility that they won't make it to the American League
between the three of those guys we think that we have good goaltending options for Grand Rapids
Last season marked Machovsky's fourth with Plzen HC
which plays in the top league in the Czech Republic
He led the Czech Extraliga in save percentage (.936) in 2013-14
when he posted a career-best 1.67 GAA with six shutouts
Machovsky spent three seasons with the OHL's Brampton Battalion
His second trip to the development camp this year gave Machovsky an idea of what the Red Wings are looking for
"We got lots of attention from the coaches
one of six goalies at the development camp
"I think it's pretty good with the goalies
We got pretty good goalies here with the draft picks and big boys all around
"It's a good drill and it makes us better."

but the way itcombines with his athleticism that is turningheads
“He’sprobably the most athletic goalie I’ve ever seen,” says head coach of theLincoln Stars Jim McGroarty
“He’s incredibly swift; his ability to get up and downand his angles are impressive
“Butthe biggest thing is that he’s always smiling
to have somebody positive like that on the team.”
the Coreaus attended the USHL showcase in Chicago for the birth year of 1991-92
where Jared was one of about 300 playerslooking to grab the attention of representatives from about 20 teams in the league
“Thatwas quite the experience,” Jared said
but the draftcame and went and his name wasn’t called
McGroarty called and asked him to come to the Stars’camp in June
Jared recorded two shutouts and in the next game
the field was narrowed down to 40 for an all-star game andthen whittled ever further
Jaredsays he feels that the decision to go to Lincolnwas a good choice
It could provide him with opportunities to be on the radar for the NHL

Hesaid his philosophy can be summed up in two phrases which he continually usesto remind himself to work hard: pain oftraining or pain of regret – it’s your choice
always aiming to better his agility andkeep his head in the game
“Iadmire the quickness of smaller goalies and I try to be as calm as I can innet,” he said
“Some nights you get peppered but if you don’t panic and focus ondoing your job it doesn’t get to you.”
Thatattitude is precisely what coach McGroarty said could be Jared’s ticket
“Hismental preparation is going to set him apart in the end,” McGroarty said
“Jaredis the hardest-working player on the team right now
He’s the first guy on theice and last one off,” he said
Jaredstarted within the ranks of the Perthminor hockey program
“Wesaw this passion in him at a young age,” says his father
hisparents sent him to attend Harrington College of Canada in Quebec
an all- boys’ school that focuses solelyon hockey and academics
Spending two years in Harrington’s developmentalhockey program
he was on the ice for six days a week as well as completing work-outsessions with a professional trainer - all on top of regular school requirements
Heplayed independent Junior A with the Harrington Icebergs
a Quebec team in the American East HockeyLeague
he was named league goaltender of the year for 2007-08
MVP of histeam and named to the first team
Heplayed last season for the Peterborough Liftlock Stars in the OntarioProvincial Junior A Hockey League
where he won the Jack Christmas Memorial Awardfor combining hockey and scholastics
Jaredsaid he’s come a long way from his beginning days with the sport
they’re looking forward to watching himblossom in a different hockey market
while he is a 21-hour drive away from the family home near Perth
Jeff said it isrewarding as a parent knowing their son is successful in what he is doing
“Itfeels pretty good knowing that he is pursuing his dream,” said Jeff
“We’re soproud of him; he has worked so hard forit.”
I had the chance to talk with goalie Jared Coreau
whom the Red Wings signed right out of college (Northern Michigan University)
We talked about his struggles in the minor leagues this past season
being able to fully participate in the camp this summer
HOHM: “Can you talk about last season
obviously a big transition year going from college to minor-pro Toledo (ECHL).”
Jared Coreau: “I had a good start to the year
Obviously it’s not the year I wanted
It was just a quicker game (than the college level)
you have a bit more playmaking and a little bit more patience
Jimmy B’s (Red Wings goaltending coach Jim Bedard) told me many times
the rule is just anticipate [that] the player’s going to shoot until he doesn’t
HOHM: “You also got a small taste of the American Hockey League
How was [playing with the Grand Rapids Griffins] different from Toledo?”
the biggest thing between the two leagues is the execution
and the plays are a bit more deliberate Whereas in the east coast
and sometimes it might get a little bit more scrambly
There are players in both leagues that could play in the NHL
or if you’re in the [ECHL] play in the AHL
The biggest thing is just the speed of the game.”
HOHM: “In what part during the season did you start to find your comfort level
when I got sent back down to Toledo in February
and [I was] just controlling rebounds more
obviously you weren’t able to take part in all the drills
you’re healthy and taking part in everything
Just kind of describe what it’s like to be a part of the camp.”
Coreau: “Just participating in everything
and then I’d go out and do the goalie skate
get undressed by myself…So it’s the comradery too
I get to see everyone more and be around the guys more
HOHM: “What do you hope to take away from the weekend?”
Anything they can give me that they think I still need to improve on for next season
and just show them what I’ve improved on from the end of the season until now.”
HOHM: “What part of your game do you think needs the most work?”
That’s something you can always get better at
And if I can use that speed and that size to be square and challenge
there’s not going to be much net to shoot at.”
I remember you telling me that you watched Pekka Rinne a lot to develop your style
actually it’s more of a shift towards Ben Bishop
He puts himself in a good position on rebounds that
he doesn’t have to sprawl out too much or anything
too bad he couldn’t play in the playoffs
but he’s the one I watch now.”
if I started in Grand Rapids or started in Toledo
don’t worry about anyone’s mistakes
say ‘good job’ and worry about the next period.”
Can you talk about being able to play in a game with these guys.”
But it’s good because I broke my finger at the end of the year
so I hadn’t been in a practice with these high-caliber players since about early May
and then I have the rest of the summer to develop.”
HOHM: “Are you glad that there’s a second scrimmage added on to the end of this camp?”
There was one shot that I wanted back in that scrimmage (on Saturday)
So in this scrimmage that’s coming up on Tuesday
*Team Yzerman won their scrimmage on Tuesday by a score of 5-1
He also stopped all eight shootout attempts afterward (according to KuklasKorner’s George Malik’s very detailed shootout summary)
Three of those attempts were made by Tomas Nosek

Grewe does Marcnn’t have Marchand’s offensive ability
but has shown Marchand’s knack for earning
Marchand became the most suspended NHL player when he picked up his eighth suspension
now with Djurgardens IF earned a different distinction this season in the Allsvenskan
The latest five-game suspension resulted from what the website Expressen called a “tackle” against Vasteras player Isac Skedung
This suspension created more headlines because both Grewe and his team protested the suspension as unreasonable
