An official website of the United States government
Before his daily attire consisted of a suit
United States Secret Service Special Agent Coron Williams wore a different uniform – that of a Division I college basketball player
As a member of the Robert Morris University basketball team that qualified for the 2010 NCAA Tournament
He also knows that many of the skills he developed to become an elite basketball player also translate to having success in the Secret Service
“What you need to be an agent is what us athletes have already,” Williams said
From a guard on the basketball floor to a guardian of democracy
the 35-year-old is in his second year working for the Secret Service
He has been assigned as a Special Agent in the Washington Field Office since August
His official title brings him immense pride
Williams always reflects on his path to the agency
It was a road built upon high-level athletics
Williams played for Robert Morris for four years
He then played one year at Wake Forest University before signing to play professionally overseas
where he suited up for a handful of teams between 2014-2020
Like anybody with basketball in their blood
his eyes are now on the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament
The Division I NCAA men’s basketball tourney is one of the most popular sporting events in the U.S
Williams was lucky enough to experience ‘The Big Dance’ during his first collegiate season
I had never felt anything like that before and I have never [since]
The underdog kept the game closer than any analyst expected
but ultimately lost to the Wildcats in overtime
Williams did not see any playing time due to his redshirt status
“It was heartbreaking because our guys played so hard and played so well
If we would have a couple calls go our way
it would have been different,” Williams said
the Colonials earned their ticket to the NCAA Tournament once again this year
second-seeded Alabama out of the Southeastern Conference
Williams watched on television as his former school fell 90-81 to a talented Crimson Tide team that would advance to the Elite 8 of the tournament
But [Robert Morris] competed and that’s what our culture is there
I feel like I was one of the guys who helped instill that,” Williams said
Now he is all about the culture of the Secret Service
which he believes fits former athletes perfectly
What you need to be successful in your respective sport are the same traits you need to be successful at this job,” Williams said
He stressed the importance of time management
and physical and mental fitness to excel as a Special Agent
I have to rely on my teammate to do his job
That’s what makes me good at my job,” Williams said
“You’ve got to be aware of everything that is going on around you in the Secret Service
Knowing your opponent is also critical.
You have to be willing to take time to know your opponent
You’ve got to be able to take time to know your [protective site]
“We have a saying (in basketball): Know your personnel - ‘K.Y.P.’
Williams is used to the pressure-packed posts and intense investigations
His ascent into one of the most elite law-enforcement agencies in the world was aided by his time on some of the biggest stages in sports
We know how big these events are in the Secret Service
In the NCAA Tournament we know how big the moment is
You cannot focus on how big the game is or you are going to struggle
and you are going to lose,” Williams said.
You’ve got to be able to perform under pressure
You’ve got to persevere through those thoughts
You’ve got to persevere through what’s going on around you and focus on your job and get your job done,” he said
“You’ve got to be able to be poised – poised under pressure.”

as well as a specialized technological infrastructure system for ports that integrates all the operational and administrative processes related to the automated handling of ships and cargo
Puerto Corinto is the country's main port and the second most important in terms of cruise ship arrivals
It has been internationally certified as a "Safe Port" since June 2004. In addition
it strictly complies with the port and maritime security measures established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and is constantly supervised by the Aquatic Transportation General Directorate (DGTA)
it will be possible to handle international cargo and ships

The international team of researchers focused on a crater called Corinto, just north of the Martian equator in Elysium Planitia
about nine miles (14 km) across and 0.6 miles (one km) deep
Secondary impacts created smaller craters both inside and outside the main crater
The researchers used imaging data from the HiRISE and Context Camera (CTX) on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) to study Corinto. The paper stated:
Orbital thermal and visible imaging datasets are used to describe the crater, ejecta blanket, four facies of rays and secondary craters
and to estimate the age of the impact and the total number of secondary craters
The researchers examined four different kinds of craters around Corinto
Those five groups are what’s known as facies
largely due to how far away they are from Corinto crater
The craters closest to Corinto are semi-circular and have no ejecta of their own
But some of the craters farther away are long and narrow looking
Studies of the main crater also showed the ground was likely saturated with water ice
the superheated ice degassed during the impact
Scientists calculated the angle of impact was about 30-45 degrees
most of the debris fell back to the surface to the south of the crater
Consider the great distance from the main impact to the furthest craters
an incredible 1,200 miles (2,000 km) apart
It would be like an asteroid hitting Los Angeles and the debris reaching halfway across the United States to Dallas
What might it have been like to witness that impact and massive debris shower
Bottom line: An asteroid created a large Martian crater called Corinto
Debris from the impact also created 2 billion smaller craters on Mars

Mars' Corinto impact crater is located in the Elysium Planitia
a broad plain that straddles the planet's equator
An object that slammed into Mars roughly 2.3 million years ago created 2 billion smaller craters around the main Corinto impact crater
A giant impactor that severely dented Mars' surface roughly 2.3 million years ago also carved out 2 billion smaller craters on the Red Planet as it shattered the ground
"Corinto is a fresh impact crater in Elysium Panitia that produced one of the most extensive systems of…secondary craters on Mars," the researchers wrote in a study released at the conference.
The team used data collected by the High Resolution Imaging Experiment (HiRISE) and the Context Camera (CTX) on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) to examine Corinto and its surroundings
The object that formed Corinto pockmarked the surrounding landscape with smaller craters
as ejected fragments of the Martian surface shot outward in ray-like patterns still visible today
These secondary craters are concentrated in an area to the south and southwest of Corinto
with the farthest flung ejecta landing 1,150 miles (1,850 km) from the main crater
Related: Mars crater is 'chock-full' of opal gemstones, hinting at widespread water and possible microbial life
The researchers grouped the secondary craters into four "facies," based on their shape and distance from the main crater

"The observed differences…with distance from the crater likely result from variations in impact velocity and size of ejecta," the researchers noted in the study.
—Eerie photo of Mars' horizon took NASA 3 months to capture
—Mars' oldest meteorite traced to strange double impact crater
—Massive Martian meteor impact was largest ever recorded in solar system
The flight direction of the ejecta fragments that burst outward during the impact
together with the slightly elliptical shape of the main crater
suggest the object came from the north and touched down on Mars at an oblique angle of 30 to 45 degrees
The researchers also posit the object was made of "strong
Corinto's interior floor, which sits 0.6 mile (1 km) below the surrounding Martian landscape, features a large number of pits that suggest the area was covered in water ice when it was hit
which are all smaller than 660 feet (200 meters) across
may have formed as a result of intense degassing (the removal of dissolved gases from a liquid) when the water ice was superheated upon impact
This study has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal
Editor's note: This article was updated on March 28 to correct information about the likely source of the smaller craters.

2021.- In order to contribute to Nicaragua's economic growth and socioeconomic development
the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) today approved a US$21.4 million extension to finance the "Project to Improve Puerto Corinto's Technical and Operational Capabilities" in Nicaragua
making it the largest investment in the country's port sector in recent decades
The project will improve the Puerto Corinto's operations through a series of works such as the construction of 15,944 m2 of dock area
increasing foreign trade by making conditions more competitive
in addition to promoting the mobilization of 39,355 more passengers per year
since the improvements that will be made will enable the port to handle international cargo and ships
thus contributing to boosting national and regional trade
which is essential for restoring the economy affected by the pandemic," said CABEI Executive President
the project will contribute to the creation of 566 temporary direct jobs during its execution and 122 permanent direct jobs during its operation
The US$21.4 million expansion is in addition to the financing approved in July 2018 for US$163.2 million and is a product of the increase in the project's scope to adapt it to the port's current technical and operational needs.

Comprising half of the towns in the Calamian Group of Islands in the north of Palawan
Coron and Culion boast unique identities that set them apart from the rest of the province
Coron has been consistently making headlines in tourism with its stunning seascapes and surrounding islands
and Siete Pecados Marine Park have received accolades in recent years
awakening its potential and shedding its tag as the “Island of the Living Dead” to become the “Island of Hope” it is today
the towns gained national attention when the national government
particularly the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)
The ₱4.2 billion Coron-Culion Inter-Island Bridge Project
was designed to connect the two island towns from Barangay Bintuan in Coron to Barangay Jardin in Culion
The government viewed the project as a key infrastructure development expected to boost the local economy
The bridge was first conceptualized in 2013 when Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) struck Coron
The idea resurfaced during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020
as the bridge was considered a solution to reduce the risks of transporting patients from Coron (and Busuanga) to Culion
where a hospital with better facilities—the Culion Sanitarium and General Hospital—is located
Alan Guintapan said the biggest beneficiary if the project materializes
“The town needs the bridge as it will play a critical role in the transport of patients who need immediate medical attention that we cannot provide,” he stated
While there are medical facilities in the town
the Coron District Hospital is only classified as an infirmary and thus cannot perform surgical services
has the Culion Sanitarium and General Hospital
which is the nearest primary referral hospital to Coron
“If a patient is to be transported to Culion by boat
and more lives will be saved,” Guintapan said
He also noted that the referral system would be easier
and health services would become more efficient
The bridge was originally scheduled for construction between 2020 and 2023
DPWH began clearing operations for access roads in November 2020
and other sectors quickly raised objections to the project
citing violations and non-compliance with laws and regulations
The Environmental Legal Assistance Center (ELAC)
and Oceana Philippines backed an online petition launched by locals to halt the bridge’s construction
The groups cited potential environmental impacts
warning that the bridge could devastate entire ecosystems
Historical and cultural sites would also be put at risk
contrary to claims that the bridge would boost tourism
harming the very environment that draws tourists
Areas of concern included mangrove forests
Ancestral domains and Marine Protected Areas
such as Bintuan Main Park and Bugor Sand Islands
were also said to be vulnerable to contamination from construction materials
local communities questioned the project’s credibility
claiming that proponents bypassed several processes
such as rerouting the bridge or using better construction technologies
NGOs continued to push for the project’s total cancellation and suggested redirecting the funds to more pressing concerns
announced that the project would no longer proceed
the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) MIMAROPA Regional Office restored the project
In a roadshow presentation at the Palawan provincial capitol in October 2023
NEDA showcased the MIMAROPA Regional Development Plan (RDP) 2023–2028
This five-year plan emphasized deep economic and social transformation for the region
including the Coron-Culion Inter-Island Bridge
is aligned with the national government’s “Ambisyon Natin 2040” long-term vision and its commitment to the “2030 Sustainable Development Goals.” The plan primarily focuses on developing the region’s nautical highways
no updates regarding the bridge’s construction have been released
the agency has yet to confirm whether the project will proceed
The national government also announced plans for at least eight major inter-island bridges across the country
but the Coron-Culion connection was not included
closely monitoring developments regarding the plan
They remain steadfast in their opposition and are ready to take action should proponents push for the project again
it remains a wait-and-see game—whether or not the bridge will ever rise

Direct flights to the popular tourist destination have only been operated by AirSWIFT Transport Incorporated
which Cebu Pacific acquired in October last year
Flights to El Nido and Coron will be operated by Cebgo Incorporated (Cebgo)
Cebu Pacific’s subsidiary offering domestic flights
The budget airline said it has yet to integrate the flights operated by AirSWIFT
their core competency is servicing El Nido so we believe
They’ll continue to service El Nido from Manila
they’ll continue to service El Nido with other inter-island routes,” Lao said
The launch of the new routes comes just as Cebu Pacific transferred its flights to Siargao and Masbate to Clark International Airport
This is in line with the government’s plan to move turboprop operations out of the country’s main international gateway
Cebu Pacific is currently the biggest airline operator in Clark
serving 11 domestic flights on top of flights to Bangkok
The airline served over 1 million passengers from the airport in 2024
operating a total of 872 flights from Pampanga
“Having now a Clark-El Nido service in our network makes it easier for international inbound travelers to then connect onto our network,” Cebu Pacific chief marketing officer Candice Iyog said

An asteroid struck Mars 2.3 million years ago
throwing debris across a region of the planet equal to four times the length of the Grand Canyon
scarring the surface with one massive crater and around two billion smaller individual craters
These secondary craters appear across a region of 1,000 miles (1,800 kilometers)
making this asteroid event one of the biggest impacts seen on the Red Planet in relatively recent history.
Asteroids massive enough to create widespread destruction like this are estimated to impact Mars just once every 3 million years
Despite being 2.3 million years old, the crater and its secondaries — some of which are carved into lava flows originating from the summit of the extinct Martian volcano Elysium Mons — are considered to be extremely young by the team

extending around 1,243 miles (2,000 km) to the south and covering a nearly 180° arc on Mars," the team wrote in a related study
the ejecta are pieces of Mars shot out from the giant
main crater cavity formed due to the asteroid's crash
was given to a machine learning program that separated this impact's ejecta-caused craters from other Martian craters originating from asteroid strike events specifically
This information was then used to estimate the age of the impact and the total number of secondary craters the initial impact generated
Measuring the distribution of secondary craters extending out from Corinto, the team found the greatest concentrations to the south and southwest of the main impact crater.
There is a lack of ejecta to the north of the crater
which the scientists think indicates the asteroid that caused this devastation entered the Red Planet's atmosphere at an angle of around 30 to 45 degrees from the north or northeast
The furthest secondary craters found by the researchers indicated that some of the ejecta from the impact were launched as far as 1,150 miles (1,850 km)
That's about four times the length of the Grand Canyon
The secondary craters didn't just vary in distance from the main impact zone and in size
The team behind the findings also classified them in relation to their shape
while others appeared "flattened circular," or "elliptical."
or "morphology," taken by the secondary craters related to the speed at which the fragments that created them were ejected
and the surface composition of the Martian region on which they crashed
the secondary craters took the form of semi-circles
with elliptical-shaped craters found further from the main impact zone
"The large number of secondary craters formed by Corinto are consistent with most of the ejected material being strong
— Life on Mars could have thrived near active volcanoes and an ancient mile-deep lake
— Bad news for life on Mars? Red Planet's wet epoch may have been shorter than we thought
— Water ice buried at Mars' equator is over 2 miles thick
The composition of some of the ejecta launched from Mars' surface by this asteroid impact indicate the space rock slammed down into water or ice
This is also indicated by "pits" spread across the floor of the Corinto crater
which imply the drainage of water or gas released by the effect of the impact on ice-rich materials
The team's results were presented at the 55th annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in Texas earlier in March

The management of Siete Pecados Marine Park (SPMP) in Barangay Tagumpay
reported a rare sighting of a pair of seacows
Park administrator Freddie Cinco and marine park ranger Benedict Gader reported the sightings as the seacows were seen grazing in the waters of Siete Pecados
The marine mammals were observed around past noon as they were feeding on the seagrass
which the management of SPMP described as “a positive indication of the park’s thriving marine ecosystem.”
“The presence of these gentle marine mammals highlights the success of ongoing conservation efforts within the protected area,” SPMP said in a post on its official Facebook page
“This sighting marks a significant event
as the last documented appearance of dugongs in Siete Pecados dates back to 2017
The earlier sighting was part of a reef assessment survey conducted by the University of the Philippines Visayas
which identified the area as a habitat for these endangered creatures,” the post noted
The SPMP management further noted that the sighting of dugongs in the marine sanctuary is a testament to the effectiveness of its conservation measures and the rich biodiversity of Siete Pecados
The management likewise expressed full commitment and dedication to protecting the marine mammals
which are red-listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as vulnerable
and ensuring their habitat remains conducive for their survival
SPMP further stated that the return of Dugongs to Siete Pecados is a cause for celebration and a reminder of the critical importance of marine conservation
along with environmentalists and conservationists
the park management said it looks forward to these sightings becoming more frequent as efforts to protect marine life continue
“These sightings also underscore the need for ongoing research and monitoring to ensure the well-being of dugongs and other marine species in the region
The team at Siete Pecados Marine Park remains dedicated to safeguarding this unique marine habitat for future generations,” the management said

Palawan recently inaugurated two new Marine Protected Area (MPA)-Bantay Dagat stations
enhancing local efforts in marine conservation and community-based enforcement
a floating facility located within the San Fernando MPA in El Nido
doubles as a tourist attraction during the day
The innovative use of this station allows it to be rented out to tourists
with the generated revenues being directed towards incentives for the volunteer rangers
known as “bantay dagats,” and for the maintenance of the structure
This location was carefully chosen and agreed upon in collaboration with the local indigenous peoples (IPs)
and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)
emphasizing the importance of community involvement in environmental stewardship
(MFI) said both facilities were constructed through a partnership model
involving community engagement and contributions from the LGUs
showcasing a strong collaborative effort in safeguarding Palawan’s marine biodiversity
These stations are staffed by deputized volunteer rangers who play an important role in monitoring and protecting the marine ecosystems from illegal fishing and other harmful activities

Fortunately, we don’t get to truly test the protective properties of every helmet we review. But for me, the Coron Air Spin, a POC full face helmet, was one of the lucky, or rather unlucky, ones. On a recent trip to ride my favorite steep slopes in La Thuile, Italy
I managed to squarely head check a tree while wearing this minty colored melon bucket
I was excitedly trying to clear a set of roots on my third descent when I fist-bumped a tree mid-air and ponged into the next adjacent spruce trunk
After untangling myself from a patch of smaller trees I did a self-assessment and determined that I was okay to slow roll to the bottom of the trail
a friend went over the concussion checklist with me to be sure
I made it out with a few minor cuts and a gnarly bruise where my ankle was caught between the top tube and handlebar
While I can’t say for sure that this POC full-face helmet saved me from a concussion on its own
I can say that my head and neck didn’t hurt after a full speed stop that was entirely absorbed by my dome and an innocent tree
The fit and functionality inside and outside the POC Coron Air SPIN (available from Amazon) are spot on, as you might expect from a helmet developed with professional enduro racers like Martin Söderström and Robin Wallner
The seemingly solid fiberglass shell has fourteen intake vents and six exhaust vents
I have ridden in this lid through temps exceeding 80° F (26.6° C) and it provides every bit as much airflow as the top competition
The cheek padding is removable should you need to wear it while you climb
and there is ample space to nest your goggles beneath the visor once the descent is over
there is a simple breakaway system to allow it to pop off in a crash instead of breaking
That same breakaway capability means that the visor won’t dictate the direction of your head and neck as you slide across the soil
It’s available in this flat minty color that POC calls Apophyllite Green/Uranium Black, or in all black, all white, or yellow and black, in three different sizes. The size X-large/XX-large that I tested fits better than most full face mountain bike helmets I have tried
and weighs a little less than some similarly rated lids at roughly 1215g
It’s tight enough that I know it will stay safely on my skull when I crash
without being so tight that I notice it consistently
The overall construction of this helmet is sturdy and clean
There is no EPS foam along the edges to get dinged up
and all of the surfaces are smooth and cleanable
I have genuinely treated this lid like junk
throwing it around and using it as a battering ram
and it won’t let me make it ugly despite my best efforts
Heavy sweaters will be stoked on the removable padding that can be washed as needed
How does this sexy hunk of head gear protect you brain
“The shell is paired with a multi-impact EPP liner that delivers excellent crash protection and durability
Our patent-pending silicone pad technology SPIN (Shearing Pad INside) is another aspect of our whole-helmet approach included in the helmet.” All of that fancy tech landed the POC Coron the EN 1078
I’m certainly happy that I was wearing this helmet when I hurt that innocent tree
The cheek pads that pull out to cool you off during transition climbs are actually intended first and foremost to make the helmet easier to remove in the case of a head or neck injury
The final piece of engineering worth mention is what POC describes as “ear chambers designed for less effect on balance and hearing.” The lower jaw vent opens up the ear pockets slightly
but the overall wall of sound at speed in this helmet is lower and less distracting than in some of the competition
I’m not sure how that all equates to balance
but being unencumbered by gear is always a plus

A resolution is set to be presented to the municipal council of Coron to declare Rosemarie Tan Pamulaklakin
and Rendon Labador of Team Malakas as persona non grata following their involvement in a controversy there recently
Based on information gathered by Palawan News
Juan Patricio Matta intends to file the resolution at the next regular session of the municipal council in Coron
vloggers Rendon and Rosmar were involved in an incident where the former disrespectfully confronted Jho Cayabyab Trinidad
an employee of the Office of the Vice Mayor
in front of many witnesses inside the Office of the Mayor
Labador’s actions were disrespectful
and constituted a blatant disregard for proper decorum
thereby causing undue distress and embarrassment to Miss Jho Cayabyab Trinidad and reflecting negatively on the office she represents,” the proposed persona non grata resolution stated
These actions are purportedly in contravention of Republic Act No
also known as the “Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004,” which aims to safeguard women and children from violence and mistreatment

The resolution asserts that both influencers made public commitments to provide grocery packages to the residents of Coron
their group only managed to deliver a limited number
The resolution also noted that Rosmar’s Facebook post stating “never again Coron
further tarnishing the municipality’s image with negative publicity
Their disregard for established protocols and the dignity of Mayor Marjo Reyes’ office demonstrates a lack of respect for local governance and authority
the behavior of Rendon and Rosmar caused substantial disturbances in public order
and fueled unrest and dissatisfaction among Coron residents
thereby compromising the community’s peace and stability
deems it necessary to declare Rendon Labador and Rosmar as persona non-grata to safeguard the community from further disrespectful and disruptive behavior,” said the measure
Matta urged Trinidad to also initiate legal proceedings against the people who humiliated her
and implored Mayor Reyes and Vice Mayor Asian Palanca to offer her any necessary support
and Trinidad after the latter posted accusations online that they were merely using the people of Coron
who ended up waiting for a long time and went hungry
Trinidad also mentioned that the staff did not receive any compensation
Rosmar and Rendon became aware of the post
Rosmar clarified in a now-viral video that her “last money,” amounting to ₱3,000
was given to the municipal government staff
Rendon is shown yelling and pointing fingers at Trinidad
they persuaded Trinidad to issue a public apology
who defended their town and Trinidad for enduring what they described as public humiliation when the situation could have been resolved discreetly
They were also accused of visiting Coron merely “for content,” with critics labeling their actions as “poverty porn.”
asserting that they were disrespected during their visit to Coron
where they just wanted to help residents in dire need
Rosmar’s apologyRosmar issued an apology on her Facebook account but did not specify whether it was directed at the town of Coron
She explained that her emotions were heightened because she had just given birth
“Sorry kung nagkaganun reaction ko sadyang kakapanganak ko lang nadala lang ng emosyon Wala naman kami ginusto kundi makatulong lang [sic],” she posted
she had posted indications that she was hesitant to continue distributing aid
She also shared photos of sacks of rice related to the relief operations they were conducting
“AYAWAN NAAA Team Malakas Baklaaaaaas
4months postpartum baby blues [sic],” she stated
