Sir John said he "wasn't entirely surprised" at Trump's call to go ahead with the policy "They're just a negotiating point I think he simply put on widespread and high rates of tariffs on every country to give himself a leverage point and a negotiating point "What I think he actually grossly underestimated was the stock market reaction You can actually make the case that his own strategy hasn't worked The reason the markets have recovered is because he's taken those tariffs off the most part 'I'm going to negotiate case by case'." Sir John suggested Trump's economic policies could still generally be positive for the US but the tariffs could be trickier for the global economy Asked whether he stood by his October comments that Trump would be good for the economy he said: "Do I think he's going to reduce regulatory burden in the United States It depends on where things shake down in terms of tariffs." Sir John acknowledged that for certain industries Trump's policies could be "a really negative thing" particularly if the president's proposed 100% tariff on the film industry were to be implemented "I can't see how it would be cost-competitive to make a movie in New Zealand with a 100% tariff on it," he said noting that films such as The Hobbit would not have been made in New Zealand without government subsidies who now served as a director of US tech company Palo Alto Networks said he had "always been opposed" to Trump's tariff policies but believes they won't be the "dominant part of his economic solutions" "I don't think it's perfect from New Zealand's point of view but I don't think we should panic either and America will still be a very big market for us to sell things to," he said "There are growing markets around the world It's not a great thing from New Zealand's point of view We've got a very sound economy with lots of options in front of us." Sir John suggested a belief that the Republican Trump was was better "on balance" for the US economy than Democratic opponent Kamala Harris he expressed concerns about Trump's tariff approach: "China doesn't pay those tariffs middle-income consumers or consumers in America do because when a tariff goes on a good that you bring into a country He added: "I don't agree with the massive tariffs and I don't think you'll follow through with all of that and I certainly don't agree with this view on trade." Audrey Backeberg disappeared from a small city in south-central Wisconsin after reportedly hitchhiking with her family’s babysitter and catching a bus to Indianapolis Nobody ever knew where she went or what happened to her All that changed last week when she was found alive and safe in another state thanks to the fresh eyes from a deputy who took over the case in February Detective Isaac Hanson discovered an out-of-state arrest record that matched Backeberg which triggered a series of investigative moves that led to finding her alive and safe in another state Turns out Backeberg chose to leave the town of Reedsburg on her own accord – likely due to an abusive husband safe and secure; And just kind of lived under the radar for that long,” he said Hanson was assigned the case in late February and he and other officials met with Backeberg’s family to see if they had a connection with that region They also started digging through Backeberg's sister's Ancestry.com account obituaries and marriage licenses from that region they found an address where a woman was living that Hanson said shared a lot of similarities with Backeberg including date of birth and social security number Hanson was able to get a deputy from that jurisdiction to go to the address "I was expecting the deputy to call me back and say ‘Oh nobody answered the door.’ And I thought it was the deputy calling me I could sense that she obviously had her reasons for leaving.” Most of the information he learned during that call he declined to share saying that it was still important to Backeberg that she not be found “I think it overwhelmed her of course with the emotions that she had having a deputy show up at her house and then kind of call her out and talk with her about what happened and kind of relive 62 years in 45 minutes,” he said Hanson described discovering her safe after more than six decades practically unheard of And while he doesn't know what will happen next in terms of her family reconnecting he said he was happy that she can reach out if she wants to so she has my contact number if she ever wants to reach out or needs anything any phone numbers of family members back here," he said "Ultimately she kind of holds the cards for that.” Shane William Pritchard has been charged with crimes he didn’t commit and chased for debts he doesn’t owe That’s because the Dunedin man is not the only Shane William Pritchard in town While the duo’s shared name and age has sometimes been a handy loophole for one Shane for the other it has caused problems for 36 years It’s been years of fearing every knock on the door Years of wondering if he’ll be hand-cuffed and taken to jail to be honest,” says Shane William Pritchard a scout and a member of the Air Training Corp remembers getting quite a shock when her friend called one evening She'd been acting as a referee for a gun licence for Shane whose friend informed her that the police had a long list of offences against Shane’s name Not long after that the police turned up to where Shane was working at the local tannery to arrest him “You're scrambling in your head to think of ways that you can prove it's not you.” Another Shane the full video story go to TVNZ+ Shane from Milton had huge problems focusing at school He was raised in foster care and then boys’ homes I just wanted to look cool and get in trouble,” he tells Fair Go Milton Shane was used to run-ins with police he got pulled over in his car and asked about his driving licence one’s got a licence and the other hasn’t.’ And I’m like ‘obviously it must be the one with a licence’.” he went to his bank to draw out an ACC payment and was asked which bank account was his He says that at that point he was trying to figure out what was going on “I thought it was just an error.” But he took advantage of the situation and withdrew a large sum of cash Mosgiel Shane became aware of the withdrawal when a scheduled car payment was declined and when Milton Shane turned up at the bank to withdraw more money Identity fraud was considered but Milton Shane was legitimately expecting an ACC payment so the withdrawal appeared to be a genuine mistake and the police couldn’t take any action 'Anything I could get away with Mosgiel Shane thought the bank incident would have alerted police to the problem But his nemesis had cottoned on to the advantages of having a second identity to use Milton Shane acquired a suite of furniture on hire-purchase Milton-Shane clocked up more driving offences Mosgiel Shane thought about changing his name but realised he’d have to provide his previous name in the process the courts and debt collectors such as Baycorp should be able to distinguish between himself and Milton Shane The police first addressed the issue in the 1990s after Mosgiel Shane went to the media He was given a letter to carry with him should he be apprehended He and his parents felt his situation wasn’t being taken seriously Mosgiel Shane went to the media a second time in the mid-2000s the police gave their word that a record in their system would stop the misidentification from happening again This does appear to have worked as far as police action goes But while Mosgiel Shane was given the same reassurance by the Ministry of Justice he continued to receive demands from the courts for unpaid fines He’d also get stopped and questioned whenever he left the country for work trips or holidays It took a huge toll on Mosgiel Shane’s mental health not realising the constant stress it placed on his life John Pritchard says that at times his son felt his life wasn’t worth living worrying about what he was going to do to himself and that really ate me up.” he and his son were in tears as Shane admitted he was at breaking point He Coming in at number 45 this year — one place higher than last year's 46th ranking — was New Zealand's very own Mautohe Cathedral Cove. The website highlighted the "iconic arch" which gave the beach its name and framed the view of the Pacific Ocean. "The beach is accessible by water via boat or kayak or by a walking trail, and it remains a pristine and tranquil place to visit," it said. Judges also noted the "scenic beauty" of the landscape, with golden sand lined with native pohutukawa trees and surrounding cliffs of the Te Whanganui o Hei Marine Reserve. Topping the list was Cala Goloritzé on Sardinia, Italy, with Entalula Beach in Palawan, Philippines second and Bang Bao Beach on the Thai island of Koh Kood third. The Coromandel. "Its natural beauty, cultural significance, and place in the hearts of so many make this recognition truly special — reaffirming Mautohe Cathedral Cove’s status as one of the most spectacular and valued coastal destinations in the world," Munn said. Mearns said the options being considered need to balance costs resilience against future weather events while reducing the environmental and social impacts at the heavily visited site Cathedral Cove Beach has just been named on the list of World's 50 Best Beaches for 2024 cementing itself as a must-see New Zealand destination authors placed Cathedral Cove at number 46 and called it a "remarkable natural environment" Mearns said three options were being considered for walking access to the beach "One is a short-term fix which would see construction of new steps and a boardwalk to reinstate a section of the existing track while the two others would be long-term repairs involving installation of new infrastructure." Mearns said the two long-term options would require "significant investment" and also the installation of a new potentially cantilevered staircase and steps to the beach — and therefore take longer to design "Upholding the values of Ngāti Hei has been a key factor as we work through the options Alignment with several pieces of conservation legislation and community perspectives provides both great opportunity and creates a shared awareness for compromise we've had to examine pros and cons for each of these options and also factor in an historic pā site which is significant to Ngāti Hei," Mearns said Other options explored as part of the development work included visitor entry points from the Hahei Short Walk making best use of an existing entrance at Grange Rd and whether access over adjacent farmland was feasible Another option put forward in the proposal was to keep the marine-only access which was touted as the most resilient option for mitigating future damage to infrastructure at a lower cost Northland beaches and New Zealand kai has been named among some of the best Northland has been added to the list compiled by the Sydney Morning Herald "New Zealand’s most northerly point tapers towards the confluence of two erratic bodies of water: the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea The journey to Cape Reinga is as changeable as the oceans immense wetlands and sprawling silica dunes," the accolade reads New Zealand as a whole was also mentioned for the "seriously exciting things happening in restaurants," with the likes of Monique Fiso and Giulio Sturla name dropped The accolade says: "Here are some seriously exciting things happening in restaurants across the ditch creative chefs such as Monique Fiso at Wellington fine-diner Hiakai Vaughan Mabee at Queenstown’s haute cuisine specialist Amisfield and Giulio Sturla at the wildly creative locavore eatery Mapu Test Kitchen outside Christchurch The article mentions other greats such as Japan while also sharing its opinion on overrated destinations like Hawaii - "massively over-inflated prices and lots and lots of holidaying Americans," Dubai described as "artificial and soulless" and Los Angeles - "blistering desert-hot with far too little greenery." A large-scale Southland farming company has been fined $82,500 for discharging effluent in a manner which could have entered waterways The company was sentenced on Monday after being found guilty in February following an August 2024 judge-alone trial Legal action against the company began when Environment Southland alleged the Resource Management Act had been breached through effluent discharge on or into land which could have resulted in the contaminant entering water It was alleged the defendant irrigated at night without monitoring due to employees being off duty The judgement said although it was not necessary to prove the contaminant had entered or impacted the waterway there was sufficient evidence to show it had Steps taken to mitigate against the discharge were not sufficient including using a digger to move effluent further into a paddock Judge Steven told the court that 90 percent of the fine would go to the council Gladvale Farms Ltd operates five dairy farms in Southland with 3700 cows across 3300 acres Stuff has previously reported fines against the company of $27,000 in 2018/19 A new recycling scheme turning bits of old bangers destined for landfill into fence posts is underway Eurotech Auto Repair Centre director Marino Milich said there's been a history of being able to recycle products "but plastics we've been found wanting" "This is great for the automotive trade and for generations to come," said Milich Among the biggest plastic components are car bumpers The plastics they're made of are designed to absorb force but therefore don't break down easily Milich sends around 10 of them to landfill every week but a new collection service from the country's motor industry body aims to end that Larry Fallowfield from the Motor Trade Association said they've started the service in the greater south and east Auckland areas and will be rolling it out to the greater Auckland over the next few months "With the intention that by the start of 2026 there will be no more bumpers going to landfill," Fallowfield said The process begins in south and east Auckland where broken car parts are placed in specifically-designed cages They are then brought to a plastic manufacturer in Waiuku to be made into fences Alloy Logistics Solutions' Grant Rollo said they received 24 bumpers in the first rollout "Wwe can fit about 50 to 60 bumpers per cage," he said Future Post founder Jerome Wenzlick said the plastic is fed into a "big shredding machine" which chips them into 10ml pieces "Then we melt it together and turn it into a post." The Motor Trade Association is currently in talks with other companies around the country that can also repurpose plastic parts repairers are shouldering the costs of the delivery service but Fallowfield hopes insurers will help foot the bill "Most insurance companies will pay an environmental fee What we're trying to do is get insurance companies to pay a repurposing fee." Fallowfield said there's widespread interest from repairers with around 40 companies expected to sign up by the end of the month the Emergency Management Minister's "cautiously optimistic" scientists will get back on Whakaari / White Island soon to fix broken technology They have previously been denied entry by the island's owners to repair the gear after the 2019 eruption killed 22 people The monitoring equipment was drastically damaged and eventually stopped working Te Herenga Waka Victoria University researcher Dr Finn Illsley-Kemp told 1News: "We're relying on seismometers that are on the mainland and they're just too far away to record the signals." when the island has erupted in bad weather or darkness "Eruptions have occurred and we didn't notice until we saw damage on solar panels," Illsley-Kemp said it's very strange to not be able to know anything about it." Normally our most active volcano has instruments showing shaking for experts watching 24/7 to help keep people in nearby boats planes and the mainland safe from hazards like ashfall University of Auckland geology professor Phil Shane said with the current blackspots "It doesn't really seem rational or logical to restrict access by scientists to volcanoes when it's part of our role." One of the complications was court action involving the Buttle family who were initially convicted of health and safety breaches which was then quashed Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell has been upping the urgency to now reinstate the technology "It's something that is complicated and I didn't anticipate that it would be," he told 1News "I'm cautiously optimistic that we're going to get equipment on there." The Buttles told 1News they met with government representatives in March from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Department of Internal Affairs the family wants to negotiate a formal licence instead of the verbal licence that existed previously They are waiting for further communication from the government on the proposed formal licence." They also said: "The Buttle family has always supported the activities of GNS [Science] in their monitoring and research on Whakaari." GNS Science would do the hands-on work to install the new gear Cleanup is underway in the Banks Peninsula town of Little River as angry locals are left to wonder if some of the flooding could have been avoided Little River was cut off until this afternoon after State Highway 75 was inundated with water aggrieved residents are questioning if its impact could have been lessened if the council had lowered the level of Lake Forsyth before the storm hit and it could have been avoided,” Little River Service Station worker Andy Davis said “Farmers did approach the council about opening the lake and that was back early or late last week and nothing had been done.” Davis is cleaning up after floodwater smashed the windows and upended freezers in the store it might have been the quakes and that could have broken the glass or it might have been the force of the water actually inside.” Rob McFarland was mopping the floor of the hotel after it flooded for the first time in 150 years “Obviously it’s quite a tragic event – a sea of water in here was the last thing we would have expected,” he said His daughter Sarah McFarland said because the lake was left high water coming down the mountain “had nowhere to go and came through the building” the head of Three Waters said the flooding would not have been mitigated by opening the lake “Flooding in Little River and surrounding areas is caused by issues higher up in the catchment and would not have been prevented by opening Lake Forsyth earlier,” Gavin Hutchison said Diggers opened the lake to the sea yesterday afternoon “We have to time this to coincide with the southerly swells dropping to ensure the channel stays open and has the intended impact and so we can ensure the safety of our staff and contractors when we carry out the work." “Having the lake open before the rain does help but it might help disperse some of the water,” she said she found her shop in 20-centimetre-deep water destroying a lot of her stock and leaving her with a huge cleanup “I’m not sure whether to close the doors and walk away.” India’s leading agri-solutions provider one of the world’s largest producers of phosphate fertilisers have further strengthened their longstanding partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the long-term supply of Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and NP/NPK fertilisers Director – Fertiliser Sales Commercial Over the years Coromandel and Ma’aden have fostered a long-standing partnership with Ma’aden playing a vital role as a trusted supplier of ammonia to Coromandel The new agreement marks a significant milestone in expanding this collaboration ensuring a reliable and sustainable supply of essential fertilisers to support Indian agriculture highlighted the importance of this agreement DAP availability in India has been impacted due to global supply disruptions This strategic partnership with Ma’aden is a natural extension of our longstanding relationship and will help Coromandel ensure timely availability of DAP and complex fertilisers to the Indian farming community with its close connect to over 4.5 million farmers remains steadfast in its commitment to Indian agriculture working alongside Ma’aden as a trusted and sustainable partner." reaffirmed Ma’aden’s commitment to India "Ma’aden has been the largest supplier of phosphate fertilisers to India for over a decade We are expanding our production capacity from 6 million tonnes to 9 million tonnes in the near term reinforcing our commitment to serve the growing needs of India’s agriculture sector." Lifting the state of emergency for the Banks Peninsula ward would be assessed next week which reconnected Banks Peninsula with the rest of the region but some smaller roads across the peninsula remained closed Most roads across Christchurch were now open Lower Styx Rd from number 980 to the lagoon These roads were impacted by the managed release of water from stormwater basins which continued to drain slowly The landslip at Lighthouse Rd in Akaroa continues to be regularly monitored with no changes in the past 24 hours A temporary pump installed has now stopped wastewater entering Akaroa Harbour but residents were asked to continue to limit demand on the wastewater system The Canterbury Regional Council says there was an agreement to open Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere to the sea last Tuesday but sea conditions prevented it from happening before the rain storm hit with people in Selwyn telling RNZ they are frustrated the lake was not opened to the sea earlier Taumutu farmer Tim Sanson said there had been good warning that a fairly serious weather system was on the way He was expecting around 80 millimetres of rain but received more than 150mm on Thursday which was "a fairly significant chunk of rain in a short period of time" "That is a lot more than what we were expecting from the forecast but to get more than sort of two inches in one hit here Sanson said the decision-making around opening Lake Ellesmere was a long-running "bugbear" for many locals "It's a bit like having a bucket that's full of water and potentially we should be doing that with the lake with a bit more management," he said which required heavy machinery and hard work "It did seem crazy to me watching the bulldozers head down there at high tide I think it was yesterday morning or the morning before to start preparing for opening with the southerly roaring in," he said said he thought the lake should have been opened sooner He woke at 4am on Friday to find six inches of water through his home after a nearby creek overflowed "If the council had opened the lake last weekend when it was nice and sunny then there would have been far less room for the water to move to the lake and travel on its way out to the sea," he said also questioned why officials did not act earlier to open the lake before the heavy rain caused widespread flooding She said she struggled in vain to get officials to open Lake Ellesmere to help the rising floodwaters drain away on Thursday evening She rang the Christchurch City Council and the Canterbury Regional Council after she got home to find water lapping on neighbours' doors The regional council told her it was after hours to call again in the morning and that the lake's opening was out of staff hands Adams said her property was a disaster zone with a repair bill estimated to cost tens of thousands of dollars The council used diggers to create a channel between the lake and sea at certain times governed by a 1990 water conservation order and resource consents held jointly with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu ECan general manger of hazards Leigh Griffiths said consultation for a lake opening began on Monday and by Tuesday afternoon a joint decision had been made to open the lake "We can only open the lake once a joint decision has been made and the lake height reaches a minimum of 1.13m (from 1 April to 15 June) The lake conditions were not met until Tuesday 30 April," she said Griffiths said earthworks had begun to open the lake but in current sea conditions it would not be successful because the cut would fill in and it was unsafe for people to operate machinery in the surf zone "We are watching conditions closely and the lake will be opened to the sea as soon as weather and sea conditions allow This is likely several days away at the earliest," she said Emergency Management Minister Mark Mitchell said he was confident officials had made the right call not to open Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere to the sea earlier Mitchell met Environment Canterbury staff and mana whenua on Friday about the lake "It is very apparent there is a lot of work and focus on how they manage Lake Ellesmere and the fact that there was a request to put in to widen that access," he said "All the information that they had in relation to that was what informed their decisions and they're all united in the fact that they've done the right thing and they've made the right decisions and they've done what they could." Mitchell said he had full confidence in that decision but he was prepared to hear more about the community's concerns over the the lake's management rnz.co.nz The main road to Akaroa on Banks Peninsula is still blocked days after intense rainfall flooded State Highway 75 and extreme caution is still advised on the remainder of the route to Akaroa Photos and videos shared by residents on social media show fallen trees and other major damage on the highway which is the only road connecting communities like Akaroa to the rest of Canterbury Aerial footage captured by the Christchurch City Council on Thursday evening showed farmland submerged below floodwaters across the peninsula and Minister for Emergency Management Mark Mitchell noted the full extent of the damage would not be clear until the water subsided The council also reported large cracks on Lighthouse Road in Akaroa "The assessment found there [is] no immediate danger to the evacuated properties or other properties in the vicinity," the council posted on its Facebook page we may require houses further down to evacuate at short notice." initial incident Edmondson had a bail hearing on Tuesday afternoon but the decision of Justice Matthew Muir was reserved Mansfield confirmed to RNZ on Wednesday evening that he had been granted bail and would be released on Friday follows the contour of the coastline and is a popular visitor site in northern Coromandel It was damaged during the extreme weather events of summer 2022-23 with large slips causing significant damage and forcing the temporary closure of a 670-metre section the landslips had taken out the track completely and it has been completely impassable,” says DOC’s Coromandel Supervisor Matt Flynn DOC staff have waited for land movement in the area to cease – and now the land has settled “We weren’t willing to risk a repair with land movement still occurring – waiting for the land to stabilise was vital for this project to be successfully completed “We’re conscious this is a popular and picturesque asset which draws visitors to the northern peninsula so we’re really pleased to have reinstatement work underway,” says Matt The reinstatement work has involved contractors using a small 1.5-tonne digger The contractor has cleared slips which were considered safe to remove using the digger and the project focus now turns to work at the site which must be done by hand Track reinstatement includes a process called benching which requires removal of soil to create a flat and safe track surface for visitors Contractors completed the first stage of the job on 14 March and their work will be followed by a team of DOC staff who will be using hand tools to complete the benching process along several sites throughout late March The resulting section of repaired will be slightly narrower than the original track but will still meet DOC’s own Day Visitor standard Matt says once the physical work at the site is completed DOC staff will install new signage advising visitors of the risks and urging caution should they choose to use the track “One of the most important messages we have for visitors is they need to keep moving through the repaired section “Although we’re satisfied the track will be safe enough to use the repaired section is not a place visitors should stop.” The track is set to be fully reopen in mid-April “We appreciate the community and visitors have been very patient waiting for us to reinstate this track – and we’re glad they will soon be able to again enjoy a wonderful Coromandel coastal experience.” Visitors to any DOC site are urged to choose the right trip for their fitness and experience our outdoors is different – Publican of damaged inn says scale of flooding worst in 50 years Publican Sarah McFarland of Little River Inn is hopeful it would be back up and running soon Wellington wind warning at 'red' level MetService issues red warnings when there is extreme weather which is likely to have a significant impact or disruption so rather than fearing it will replace you at work It’s hard to keep up with the evolution of AI and how it’s changing our workplaces as well as our lives Each week there’s something new in a fast-paced process of change that's generating a lot of fear There’s still a lot of unknown: will AI replace humans Or is it a tool that can revolutionise productivity and reduce burnout by sharing my load 75% of workers already use AI tools (like ChatGPT A study by EY suggests that 65% of workers fear that their job will be replaced by AI but according to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report globally 69 million new roles could emerge as well Think about the industrial revolution when farmers moved from the fields into the factories and began to use more modern machinery Even after that we evolved again to move from the factories into the offices as we ushered in the information age The headlines then were about computers taking our jobs we adapted and yes some jobs were replaced by computers but many others were created and the world continued to turn So while it’s true AI may replace jobs and some of us will find ourselves retraining history suggests there will be plenty of jobs for humans too – though they might be different I’m always fascinated by our human ability to adapt and with change comes opportunity The unknown can be scary and learning to use a new system or process is often hard if we burry our head in the sand we risk getting left behind Rather than fear this change we can learn how it can help us – we might find it can be a friend rather than foe The bottom line is: artificial intelligence is happening anyway whether we get on board or not Sam works in the HR team of a mid-sized logistics company She was one of the first in her team to embrace AI tools like ChatGPT to help draft job ads letting her focus more on people rather than paperwork He's aware of AI's potential but cross-checks everything himself “It’s like a colleague who’s great at brainstorming but terrible at writing final copy a financial administrator in Christchurch has seen AI tools introduced at her firm such as automated invoice processing and chatbots for customer service queries worried that AI could make mistakes she would be blamed for Even if you’ve not yet jumped on the AI bandwagon as an early adopter you’re probably already using AI Redirecting your navigation system due to bad traffic your personalised recommendations on Netflix your curated social media feed that presents the perfect ads full of things you want to buy Many businesses and their employees are using AI tools to get ahead and if you’re not there’s a risk it’ll be a competitive advantage lost to others If reports are now taking 10 minutes to write imagine the time we’d save in a day using AI to assist us with basic tasks it’s an assistant rather than doing the job for us Even the creators themselves advise us to always check and do your own work Use AI as a collaboration partner not a replacement for your own critical thinking and creativity I might ask if for a catchy title or to summarise a piece of writing to fit a word count but I’ll always do my own writing first AI doesn’t know my personal stories that connect with readers It took just 10 seconds to produce 50 social media posts based on the content of my recently published book It’s also been great helping me craft the outline of a keynote presentation for a conference planning a trip to New York City and showing me what my dog would look like as a human It may seem like AI can do anything and this is why we fear it might take over our jobs (or even the world) However the skills that (as yet) it can’t master now become our human point of difference These skills are human-centric ones involving empathy AI can write a report draft but it can’t lead a difficult team conversation for example The human skills we so often take for granted are our competitive advantage and will be what help us navigate this transition and change and ensure our organisations are better places to work communication and judgment is even more valuable now and leverage the use of AI to aid productivity and regain some work/life balance This is the positive side to this current state of change and constantly fearing what’s next with the robots I believe jobs won’t necessarily be lost to AI they’ll be reshaped by it This evolution will also mean that our human skills become our unique advantage and more important now than they ever have been Jess Stuart is now a Waiheke-based career coach and the author of several books including: Burnout to Brilliance and I Love Mondays Put off by all graphs and charts traditionally associated with budgeting" It's all about flipping the dopamine script If your budgeting system consists of a spreadsheet you hate Most of us don’t actually need another spreadsheet We need a more realistic way to manage our money that doesn’t make us want to set our laptop on fire Becoming “good with money” is more about accepting what makes you tick your own personal strengths and weaknesses I’ve turned to behavioural finance researchers who say the trick is more about finding ways to hack our dopamine systems That’s why there are more people regularly gambling than there are retail investors in New Zealand the other feels like a chore that your mum would approve of you doing so that you stick to a budget without a spreadsheet Budgeting doesn’t need to be a weekly sit-down with your laptop and your sins “Set and forget” is a great motto when it comes to money Budgeting isn’t about micromanaging every dollar and then automating it so you don’t have to rely on willpower every week Think: automatic transfers the day after payday The trick is to move the money before your brain has a chance to interfere Want to know why social media apps like Snapchat show your ‘streak’ for how many days in a row you’ve snapped your friends Or why Duolingo gives you a streak for how many days in a row that you sign in and chat to the owl and apply it to the good habits your should be building too with co-founder Tomas van Ammers saying they wanted to take the behavioural science usually used to hook us on bad habits and little tricks that make saving money feel satisfying He's known as a controversial figure in the States as the person behind the dopamine cycle of a lot of the apps that come out of Silicon Valley,” van Ammers says “The reward mechanism of dopamine is used to get people to come back to apps “So gambling apps lean heavily on this kind of research.” When they trialled it for a savings streak instead van Ammers found that even though he knew the trick he was playing on himself and I’ve still been putting money into it for months and give yourself the same thrill you’d get from spending – just without the buyer’s remorse You can set a savings challenge with a mate or literally name your account “Italy 2026” The best budget isn’t the most detailed one And in a world where your attention is being pulled in 100 different directions If your current system requires you to manually enter every coffee purchase You can even just do a nightly scroll through your banking app You’d be amazed how just keeping an eye on things leads you to automatically course correct that will always be better than a 100% perfect system that you don’t stick with So here’s your permission slip: delete the spreadsheet if it’s not working for you Budgeting doesn’t have to feel like punishment The information in this article is general in nature and should not be read as Work to remove hundreds of wilding conifers at Coromandel’s Opera Point Reserve will begin this week Wilding conifers are a pest tree species impacting on native bush and coastal environments light and air from native plants that are home to endemic birds The wilding conifers at Opera Point are self-seeded they will eventually take over – as they have at many locations around New Zealand DoC and Waikato Regional Council staff have arranged for an experienced and qualified local arborist to undertake the work at Opera Point a small and picturesque headland near the settlement of Whangapoua The project has been made possible through funding from Waikato Regional Council and is supported by the National Wilding Conifer Control Programme (NWCCP) DoC Coromandel senior ranger Josh Angell said Opera Point is significant to local iwi and is also a popular recreation location for the local community and visitors “We have been in an ongoing conversation with iwi and the community about enhancing the biodiversity at Opera Point and working to restore the small forest area there – and the wilding conifer project contributes to that “Wilding pines along the foreshore above and below public access tracks at the point have caused significant damage to the reserve during and after extreme weather events.” As high winds and rainfall topple the conifers the root balls expose large holes in the ground damaging culturally significant landmarks and infrastructure This results in track closures and high levels of financial investment to reinstate safe visitor access and ongoing archaeological assessments The Opera Point conifer removal project will see two methods used – what is colloquially known as “drill and fill” with small holes to be drilled into trees into which herbicide is then injected The trees will be left to decay and break down over time This method is used as it causes the minimum impact on surrounding native plants The remaining wilding conifers - close to historic features and tracks and access areas - will be completely felled using chainsaws later this year The two methods are among the accepted good practice for wilding conifer removal The reserve will stay open during the arborists’ work and people visiting are urged to stick to the marked tracks Public access will be restricted in some areas during and following the operations The arborists’ work at Opera Point is scheduled to start on Wednesday and is expected to take between two and three weeks the trees’ deterioration and decay will be monitored “Waikato Regional Council is responsible for biosecurity and protecting special places within the region,” Waikato Regional Council senior biosecurity officer Clark McMichael said “The local residents who enjoy the walking tracks and native bush at Opera Point want to see the native environment protected and restored – and this project will progress that.” Posted on 17-04-2025 11:37 | By Paddy Stewart Host manuka shrubs for a
