The alabaster plants interspersed with the corn and soybean fields outside the central-western town are part of a silent revolution in Brazil: Facing negative attention over the agribusiness industry’s environmental impact
farmers are increasingly turning to cotton and adopting sustainable techniques to produce it
After increasing exports 15-fold in the past two decades
Brazil is now the world’s second-biggest cotton supplier — after the US — and the biggest producer of sustainable cotton
No less than 84 percent of the cotton grown in the South American agricultural giant is certified by the Better Cotton Initiative
an international nonprofit group to promote sustainable cotton farming
People don’t want to buy products any more that don’t respect nature and its cycles,” said entomologist Cristina Schetino of the University of Brasilia
The industry is trying to improve the international image of Brazilian farming
heavy pesticide use and the destruction of the Amazon rainforest for agriculture
a trend that has accelerated under Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro — an agribusiness ally
the Brazilian Cotton Producers’ Association (ABRAPA) launched a sustainability training program for farmers
and introduced protocols on efficiently using water and pesticides and phasing out toxic products in favor of biological fertilizers
a new tracing program launched with Brazilian clothing brands lets consumers check how cotton goods were produced
cotton farmers in Brazil replaced 34 percent of chemical pesticides with biological ones
They have also started using drones to apply pesticides more efficiently
Switching to sustainable techniques is “a re-education process,” ABRAPA executive director Marcio Portocarreiro said
farmers tend to think mainly about the impact on their bottom line
they realize that farming sustainably gives them a guaranteed market,” he said
Fazenda Pamplona is one of Brazil’s biggest proponents of sustainable cotton
is like a small city in the middle of the countryside
The farm aims to retain workers by creating a home where they will want to stay
production coordinator Diego Goldschmidt said
He stands in front of two enormous bales of cotton
labeled with QR codes that detail their harvest
The farm produced more than 600,000 tonnes last year
Sustainable cotton sells for prices up to 10 percent higher than conventional cotton
“Besides being the right thing to do for society and the environment
it provides added value,” Goldschmidt said
cotton remains one of the most pesticide-intensive crops
using more than double that of soy per hectare
and the absence of organic products to stop them
“There’s still a lot of dependence on chemical products
which have a negative environmental impact,” said the entomologist
Brazil cultivates about 1.6 million hectares of cotton a year
It is a key supplier for the global garment industry
ABRAPA has set an ambitious goal of surpassing the US to become the world’s biggest cotton supplier in 2030
“Brazil may not have a good image on sustainable farming yet,” Goldschmidt said

A birthday celebration turned scary for one Robstown family this evening
They were celebrating at "In the Game Funtrackers" in Flour Bluff when they got stuck at the top of the roller coaster
Mike Martinez climbed down on his own and helped his wife down
He called 911 and waited for fire crews to rescue his daughter
Haley said she was glad her father called the fire department for help
"They didn't take a long time but it was taking a long time for me because I was scared," Haley said
"I was glad she was okay because I was worried about her the whole time and I didn't want her to get hurt."
The family was a little shaken from the ordeal
so they decided to cut their celebration short and head home

independent senior living ought to be about community
These are principles the founder and chairman of PARC Retirement Living came to embrace 30 years ago when he moved his mother into a retirement residence near Zurich
He saw her life become richer and more fulfilled because she lived in a community with access to services
Müller brought those ideals to Canada when he built his first PARC retirement residence in North Vancouver a few years later
Construction is wrapping on his sixth building
at the corner of Lakeshore and KLO roads in Kelowna
“We look for the best locations,” Müller says
it’s the best place to be because you can go to the lake
you are in the centre of everything you might need.”
He adds a connection to the community is also important
“We are supportive of community and senior associations
and cultural organizations so our residents can continue to live their lives.”
Müller adds PARC buildings are not like other retirement residences in design or amenities and offer a less structured approach for active independent seniors
says company research shows a change in the baby boomer generation wanting to choose what works for them in retirement
“It’s no longer a one-size-fits-all model of senior living,” she adds
and two-bedrooms which also includes heat and hydro
Amenities include the PARC Active Living program
says the company is also a certified living wage employer
Müller points out that Cristalina PARC is also a green building
Cristalina PARC is scheduled to open in July with 133 suites available for rent offering city
More information about Cristalina PARC is available on the company’s website
