The Jesuit reductions are a tourist attraction in Rio Grande do Sul
The best known of them is the Reduction of São Miguel de Arcanjo
whose ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site
It was precisely this reduction that was expanded due to a population increase
creating the Reduction of São João Batista
founded in 1697 by the Jesuit Antônio Sepp and which later gave rise to the municipality of Cruz Alta
the hometown of the writer Érico Veríssimo — located 364 km from Porto Alegre.
In this city, Brother Edison Hüttner, a teacher at School of Humanities from PUCRS
visited a family that owned a sculpture of Saint John the Baptist and wanted to discover the historical value of the piece
The professor carried out studies that confirmed that the work is from the missionary period
The sculpture was made of wood and belongs to the first period of missionary art
carried out in the 17th century andcarved into tree trunks by indigenous people of the Guarani ethnic group. There are burn marks from the base of the statue to its feet
although its structure has not been damaged
the darkening of the wood due to combustion is visible
some hypotheses have been raised about the origin of the work of art and how it received such marks:
This is the first sculpture of an adult Saint John the Baptist Missionary found in Rio Grande do Sul, being considered an important find in the history of the state
It will be exhibited at the Cathedral of the Divine Holy Spirit
until August 24th and then will return to the guardian family.
1625): are sculptures with rigid bodies
which have the feet and hands fitted together
and can be removed and replaced on the body
They were carved in trees with a cylindrical shape
“It is this phase that the sculpture of São João Missioneiro de Cruz Alta belongs to
it is a pattern of Horcones sculptures (trunks) and
it is considered to be a Hispano-Guarani-Jesuit baroque sacred art from the 17th century”
explains Brother Hüttner.
Second phase (1670-1695): the sculptures ceased to be assembled and began to resemble the European baroque
Their garments were complete and openwork.
1685-1690): the clothes of the figures represented are cloaks with flattened folds.
1696-1785): also known as the period of the Reform of José Brasanelli
with expressiveness of the Berninian European Baroque and other styles
Brasanelli's models spread and a unique missionary style was created.

The role of command sergeant major is nascent in the Brazilian Army (EB
It was established in 2015 to grant more authority and responsibility to noncommissioned officers (NCOs) by allowing them to participate in decision-making and advising the command of military units
EB tested the new role in a pilot project in which Command Sergeant Major Osmar Crivelatti took part
The test lasted one year and was used to determine the effectiveness and observe the practical results of the role being developed
EB grasped its viability and began to implement the process due for completion in late 2018
with the deployment of command sergeants major to units initially established in the plan
During a visit to the Noncommissioned Officer Academy (EASA
Crivelatti—who works side by side with General Eduardo Villas Bôas
Diálogo: Why did the Brazilian Army see the need to create the command sergeant major role
Brazilian Army Command Sergeant Major Osmar Crivelatti: Over time
that was a way to enhance the career of NCOs
and opinions that are often hidden within the troop
Diálogo: Did exchanges between EB and other armies assist in making the decision to create this new role as a type of blueprint to be followed
Crivelatti: EB had exchange programs with other countries for a long time
Our NCOs visited and participated in exchanges with South American countries
and other countries in the world and certainly
Our officers and NCOs in foreign countries identified the use and functions of the command sergeant major in other armies and pursued these experiences
It wasn’t just the process of bringing the idea and adapting it here
We had to develop a process to create a role that was suited to the institutional culture of EB
The experience and model integrate aspects that we seek in other armies
it’s not exactly what you see in another army
It’s probably difficult to compare with other armies because we don’t really have in-depth knowledge of them
We would need a thorough study to be able to make a comparison
The fact is that we had to adapt it to our culture
Diálogo: Can it be said that this role is in development or was it already developed and just needs to be furthered
command sergeants major and troops are learning to coexist with and adapt
we need to do things that the Army really needs
Because it’s a role that will add value to the career of NCOs
distinguish service members for their skills
I think that what is invaluable is what it will produce for the troops
which is a national and even international point of reference
Could you talk a little about the Brazilian NCO academies
the Brazilian Army has three NCO academies
We started with the NCO at Arms Academy [in Três Corações
and leadership training to become an NCO that from the start
which trains logistics NCOs in the entire range of logistics and is located in Rio de Janeiro
And we have the Army Aviation Training Academy (in Taubaté
which is a little smaller and specifically trains NCOs who are aviation mechanics
technicians who work with Army helicopters
Diálogo: And for someone to get into these academies
and after some 10 years as an NCO come to EASA to sharpen their skills
They participate in an open selection process
The ones who pass will attend the NCO training academies
Crivelatti: I can mention the Jungle Warfare Training Center in Manaus
If the NCO seeks to be a combat paratrooper
he takes the paratrooper course and deploys in the Army’s paratrooper units
which is a career requirement for future promotions
those who graduate from the NCO at Arms Academy
it’s continuous training over the course of their career
We have several courses that a service member can take within a range of specializations that EB needs
Diálogo: But a service member cannot get to command sergeant major without attending EASA or EsSLog before
from graduating as a staff sergeant to first sergeant
one of the requirements for promotion to first sergeant is to take the NCO Training Course
to be able to reach command sergeant major—after going through one of these training academies—the NCO must combine attributes
and after being a long-standing first sergeant
he may be considered for command sergeant major of certain units
where we have the Command Sergeant Major Course that he will take to acquire more fundamentals
EASA is also now known as the Command Sergeants Major House
Diálogo: To be commandant of EASA’s student body
do NCOs have to take the Sergeant Major Course in the United States
The commandant of the student body here is an NCO
And why is it that an EB NCO attended the Sergeant Major Course in the United States
For the experience; to develop and improve—so to speak—the preparation and training of our NCOs here
Diálogo: Regarding the study of languages and international exchanges
do you consider them fundamental for an EB NCO to further advance in his career
for the Army to be able to send NCOs abroad for exchanges
EB sponsors this; it encourages NCOs to commit to studying languages—Spanish
Each army needs a professional to accomplish its institutional and national mission
It’s difficult to compare a Brazilian Army NCO with one of the Chilean Army
Each country counts on the professionals needed to accomplish its mission
and preparation to accomplish the Brazilian Army’s mission
NCO has the same elements to accomplish the U.S
I believe that there are no comparisons between the service members of one army and another
They are professionals dedicated to their careers within each army
And I encountered more than professionals in other armies
They were more than professionals; they were friends
that exchange we had with the younger ones
That provides us with the ability to perform operations together
we were deployed in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti [MINUSTAH]
with an array of armies from several countries
and this worked very well because we already had some knowledge of how that army worked
of how that soldier from another army worked
I think that what EB does in regard to this exchange with other countries is fundamental
Army NCO [Master Sergeant Luciano Garcia] here within EASA
NCO here provides our NCO with a vision of what a U.S
And it’s an exchange in that we have the U.S
NCO collaborating with training and serving as an example to our NCOs
I think that his presence here and the presence of our NCO in the United States are fundamental
It’s fundamental for motivation and serves as an example for others
Diálogo: How do you view the presence of international students here at EASA and in other Brazilian NCO training academies
Does this have any influence in shaping their curricula
What we teach our NCOs is taught to their NCOs in the same manner
it’s a way to pursue the military culture of that country
So we do not adapt our training especially for them
We also seek to learn from their experience
and they brought experiences of their army’s command sergeant major role
they learn what we do; we glean information from them and from what they contribute to help us
we see that their curriculum doesn’t change either
Diálogo: With regard to gender integration
when will we see a female command sergeant major in the Brazilian Army
Crivelatti: That’s an extremely important matter
That’s an issue EB has worked a great deal to address
The Army has embraced gender integration for a long time in support roles
We have officer cadets that are at the Agulhas Negras Military Academy
four years from now [the length of the course]
will be in units as officers in combat logistics
when they are long-standing sergeants first class
in a female unit in which there is a command sergeant major
in EB there is no differentiation in gender roles
there is no difference in the Army that prevents a person from being able to work as an armed professional
defending his or her homeland as a soldier
the institution of the role of command sergeant major
What will be the next steps for this professionalization of the Brazilian Army NCO to be complete
We need time to really be able to finish the implementation so that everyone really has an understanding
A change in culture doesn’t take place overnight
what is more important is an understanding
We need to evolve to understand the mission and that’s something only time will bring
The features of the NCO career are specific to the Brazilian Army
but it meets the necessary requirements to accomplish the mission of our Army
Army that the NCO is the backbone of the institution
if you allow me to quote our Army Commander
He’s very wise in saying that “the NCO is the foundation that supports the structure of our Army.” Instead of a backbone
we have a solid foundation that supports the structure of our Army

travels by boat during floods to feed his cows in Eldorado do Sul
Photography by Amanda PerobelliReporting by Amanda Perobelli and Lisandra Paraguassu
Edite de Almeida and her husband fled their flooded home in early May and let loose their humble dairy herd on higher ground
the waters rose above her head and within a day they were lapping at the roofs of houses
the result of weather patterns intensified by climate change
have only started to recede after displacing half a million people in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and killing more than 160
The full extent of the losses is still coming into focus
especially in rural areas where farmers like Almeida and her family produce much of Brazil’s rice
Their cows have nowhere to graze in the flooded landscape
because there are many who lost far more than us,” Almeida said
“I’m grateful we survived and I mourn for those who lost family.”
Her husband Joao Engelmann has made a daily trek by foot
tractor and boat to bring the herd whatever food he can find
He returns sopping wet each night after wading with friends through their farms
helping to haul away perished livestock and tend to the survivors
One neighbor found a dead hog in his bedroom
fields of rice and vegetables have been washed away
Theirs were among the nearly 6,500 family farms flooded by this month’s torrential downpours
according to analysis of satellite data by consultancy Terra Analytics
The floods have rattled agricultural markets as they disrupted soy harvesting
snared farm exports and killed over 400,000 chickens
The government is lining up rice imports to blunt the impact on national inflation figures
The washed out farms and roads around the state capital Porto Alegre have contributed to food and water shortages in the area
adding to the crisis disrupting the lives of more than 2 million people
Parts of the state saw more than 700 mm (28 inches) of rain so far this month
national weather service INMET reported – more than London’s average rainfall in a year
As the floodwaters began to retreat in recent weeks
Almeida got a first glimpse of her ravaged home
appliances wrecked and belongings coated in mud
“I don’t expect to have again what I had before
Almeida and Engelmann know what it means to start from nothing
They met in the 1980s at one of the first encampments of the Landless Workers’ Movement in central Rio Grande do Sul
where the movement - the largest of its kind in Latin America - got its start
occupying rural properties to demand land reform
They married and had their first children in that camp
before the state government gave them permission to settle in Eldorado do Sul
about 70 km (45 miles) west of the state capital Porto Alegre
They are among 30 families in the settlement who produced enough rice
build and furnish homes and send their children to university
The floods have left all of that hanging in the balance
Engelmann and their daughter are sleeping on a truck bed in a neighbor’s warehouse
improvising a domestic routine as they put their lives back together
“I’ve been through all this in the encampments - the challenges to cook
But I didn’t think I’d be doing it again,” Almeida said
was just four months into retirement when the floods tore through his farm
“It’s so bleak to haul off and bury these creatures that we took care of every day,” said Hoffmann
He is weighing whether to leave it all behind and try a new life elsewhere
Almeida said her family is determined to stick it out

who will present a talk on fungi Wednesday (March 18) at 6 p.m
in the boardroom of the Kit Carson Electric Cooperative
said the organisms 'provide food … and are a major source of antibiotics for combating bacterial diseases.'
Joseph Morton has studied the mycorrhizal symbiotic relationship between soil fungi and plant root systems and developed the world's largest collection of mycorrhizal fungi - cultures of which are available for study to other researchers
Hosted by the Taos Chapter of the Native Plant Society of New Mexico
Joseph Morton will present a talk on fungi Wednesday (March 18) at 6 p.m
Many of you probably saw the documentary film 'Fantastic Fungi' that played at Taos Community Auditorium last month and were knocked out by the astonishing photography of the multitudes of forms these organisms take
Many of you probably saw the documentary film "Fantastic Fungi" that played at Taos Community Auditorium last month and were knocked out by the astonishing photography of the multitudes of forms these organisms take
If you're curious about this life form and want to learn more
the Taos Chapter of the Native Plant Society of New Mexico invites you to join us for a two-part series on fungi presented by Joseph Morton
"The Wonderful Wacky World of Fungi," will be held on Wednesday (March 18) at 6 p.m
Our meetings are free and open to the public so join us
Morton will introduce us to the kingdom of fungi
Fungi are organisms that biologists once confused with plants; however
Morton describes fungi as "the global recyclers of organic matter
They provide food … and are a major source of antibiotics for combating bacterial diseases
They are able to form associations with most living creatures
and these relationships can be either negative (as pathogens) or positive (as symbionts)."
Come and learn how their relationship with humans varies dramatically from mass starvation at worst (example
the potato blight in Ireland) to possible contributions to the evolution of cognition and brain function in humans
Morton will return and focus on "The Mycorrhizal Symbiosis: Essential to All Life on Earth." We all know that the world cannot exist without plants
"plants depend on their root systems to grow and thrive
But interactions with soil and a few essential nutrients … limit this potential
The earliest plants lacked roots as we know them and would never have established on land without the aid of fungi."
A fungus that grows in association with the roots of a plant in a symbiotic (beneficial) or slightly pathogenic (harmful) way is called a mycorrhiza
"Mycorrhizal symbiosis is an essential component for restoration and stabilization of plant communities
especially in arid and semi-arid environments such as ours in New Mexico," Morton notes
Morton is a professor emeritus from the University of West Virginia where
as a plant pathologist and environmental microbiologist
he received several awards for outstanding research and teaching
He studied the mycorrhizal symbiotic relationship between soil fungi and plant root systems and developed the world's largest collection of mycorrhizal fungi - cultures of which are available for study to other researchers
he continues to educate the curious on the fascinating subject of fungi of all forms

Albert Einstein predicted that if bees disappeared off the face of the Earth
humans would only have four years left to live
The death of these insects on a large scale
now constitutes a real warning for humanity
more than 500 million bees were found dead by beekeepers in four Brazilian states
according to a survey carried out by investigative reporting outlets Agência Pública and Repórter Brasil
according to experts and laboratory analysis
is exposure to pesticides containing neonicotinoids and fipronil
both of which have been banned in Europe because of the threat they pose to bees
an insecticide known to be highly toxic to pollinators such as bees
authorized for distribution by the Dow Chemical Company
soybean and citrus crops starting in October
Beekeepers say they fear the number of dead bees will be even higher from 2020 onward as a consequence of the use of these new pesticides
Bees are the main pollinators in the majority of ecosystems on the planet. Flying from flower to flower, they pollinate and promote the reproduction of various species of plants. In Brazil, approximately 60 percent of the 141 crops grown for human and animal consumption depend to some extent on pollination by bees, according to a report from BPBES
a platform focused on biodiversity and ecosystems run by independent scientists
According to the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
75 percent of crops used for global human consumption depend on bees
Incidences of bee deaths and disappearances have been observed in the United States and Europe since the beginning of the 21st century
studies began to draw attention with alarming die off episodes in 2005
There are no official bee death figures for Brazil
the country’s environmental regulatory agency
The numbers reported here were collected from beekeeping associations
organizations linked to state agriculture departments
the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul — Brazil’s largest honey producer — accounted for 80 percent of the recent die-off
The state produces 6,000 tons of honey per harvest
approximately 15 percent of the country’s production
followed by central-western Mato Grosso do Sul (45 million) and southeastern São Paulo state (7 million)
a municipality of 60,000 inhabitants in Rio Grande do Sul
more than 20 percent of all beehives were lost between December 2018 and February 2019
according to the Beekeepers Association of Cruz Alta (Apicruz)
“[The farmers] started using some very strong chemicals
They were sprayed from airplanes in the morning
and in the afternoon the bees were found dead already,” said beekeeper Salvador Gonçalves
The numbers and mortality rates may be even worse among wild bees, but these species are not maintained by beekeepers, so are unknown
There are about 16,000 species of bees in the world, more than 300 of them native to Brazil, according to IBAMA
Each species tends to pollinate specific plants
“What would happen if this insect went extinct
We would either stop eating this fruit or it would become very expensive
pollination would have to be carried out by hand,” said Carmen Pires
an insect ecologist and researcher at Embrapa
One of the worst culprits identified by experts and analysis in the recent bee die-off is the neonicotinoid class of insecticides
derived from nicotine and including the widely used pesticides clothianidin
Another factor in the bee deaths is the use of pesticides containing fipronil
They’re often applied by aerial spraying to crops such as apples
soybeans and sunflowers; according to a study carried out in 2004 by Embrapa
a government agency focused on farm research
19 percent of pesticides applied by aerial spraying are dispersed to areas outside of the targeted region
with some hives containing up to 100,000 bees
have become more frequent in the past decade in Brazil
without evidence of any disease to explain such high mortality rates
an agronomist and professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul
Sattler led a study into 30 cases of significant bee colony losses in Rio Grande do Sul
The results showed that about 80 percent of bees had ingested or been exposed to fipronil
“Farmers in the region were mixing fipronil in a tank with desiccants and applying these during soil preparation
the growing season and harvesting,” he said
adding that the chemical was “particularly toxic for them.”
Sattler warns that there is an even bigger risk posed to wild bees
since it’s challenging to know how many of them are dying due to the use of pesticides and who’s responsible for its application
“The impact of these pesticides reaches as far as 3 to 5 kilometers [2 to 3 miles] from the crops
Everything in the surrounding area disappears,” he said
“Some mortalities occur because the farmers are using pesticides incorrectly
farmers even think that bees damage the crop and so they apply pesticides to get rid of them.”
coordinator of the apiculture program at the agricultural department of Rio Grande do Sul
said there needs to be greater awareness regarding the use of pesticides
“We need agronomists to go out in the fields to observe applications
to see if they are being carried out according to instructions,” he said
Machado also highlighted the importance of filing complaints with environmental and agricultural watchdogs at both state and municipal levels
in addition to environmental and civil police departments
“Beekeepers must overcome their fear of making complaints
after a surge of cases in Rio Grande do Sul
we carried out a survey and found only two records of complaints
We knew that more incidents were taking place
but the government won’t take them into account without official records,” he said
But even in cases where there’s been a report filed to prove the relationship between pesticides and bee deaths
it’s difficult to establish who’s responsible
so it is difficult to identify who is responsible for each specific case.”
each state is responsible for monitoring pesticide use
bee deaths could potentially be framed as an environmental crime
it’s very difficult to prove that the deaths are a result of pesticide use that’s in violation of authorized instructions
“When it can be proved that [a pesticide] was used in a place it shouldn’t be
using incorrect equipment and causing mortality
it is classified as an environmental crime,” IBAMA said in a statement
Laboratory tests indicate that contact with pesticides was the cause of death of bees in the state of São Paulo
almost 10 percent of the country’s total production
a study conducted by São Paulo State University (Unesp) and the Federal University of São Carlos (UFScar) mapped the factors contributing to loss of bee colonies in 78 cities where approximately 255 million bees died during the period
The project, named Colmeia Viva
and funded by pesticide-producing companies
had a toll-free number that beekeepers could call to file a complaint when bees died
They could then use it to take action in court,” said Osmar Malaspina
with recommendations to create a national action plan for good practices regarding the application of pesticides
aiming to maintain a productive relationship between agriculture and beekeeping without undermining either
88 field visits were made to collect bees for analysis; 59 cases tested positive for pesticide residues
In 27 cases it was found that pesticides were applied outside of plantation areas
in locations where the affected hives were found
The initiative also carried out educational work with farmers
showing them best practices for applying pesticides to minimize impacts on bees
but we still have to wait a few years to carry out a new study that can confirm this and tell us why,” Malaspina said
IBAMA began to reassess several of the chemicals extensively used on plantations
The first of these was the neonicotinoid imidacloprid
the most frequently used of the plantation pesticide group
IBAMA banned the aerial spraying of imidacloprid and determined that all products containing the pesticide should have a warning printed on the packaging saying that the product is toxic to bees
the Ministry of Agriculture said the aerial application of imidacloprid was necessary for certain crops; three months later
aerial spraying was once again authorized for rice
IBAMA created a technical working group to come up with a compulsory risk assessment concerning the impact of pesticides on bees
it’s still not clear when the assessment will be released
a public civil lawsuit was filed in federal court in October 2017 against IBAMA to compel the agency to conclude its risk assessment within six months
That’s not the only lawsuit arising out of the nexus of bee deaths and pesticide use
the Association of Honey Producers of Dourados filed a petition in March 2018 requesting prosecutors investigate the deaths of bees
The association said beekeepers’ income and production had decreased due to the die-offs
which they blamed on “the indiscriminate and inappropriate use of pesticides on plantations of sugarcane
rice and other crops.” The Federal Prosecutor’s Office of Mato Grosso do Sul is currently deciding whether it will file its own proceedings on the complaint
Globally, a growing number of governments are taking steps to save bees from the threat posed by pesticides. Fipronil was partially banned in the European Union in 2013
and since 2017 has effectively been fully prohibited there after its approval for use expired
following complaints after almost 40 percent of insects in French apiaries were found dead
licenses to use neonicotinoids were suspended for two years
Bees aren’t nature’s only pollinating agents — birds
beetles and various other species also contribute to plant reproduction — but the large number and variety of bees mean that they play an out-sized role in pollination
shining a light on the importance of these insects to global food supplies and human wellbeing

The second week of 2015 was a busy one in the Palácio do Planalto
President Dilma Rousseff and the newly sworn-in Minister of Defense held many meetings to decide who would lead the country’s Armed Forces
General Eduardo Dias da Costa Villas Bôas was chosen to head the Brazilian Army
Villas Bôas initiated his military career at age 16
when he joined the Brazilian Army’s Preparatory School in Campinas (São Paulo)
the future commander of the Brazilian Army graduated from the Augulhas Negras Academy in 1973 as an officer candidate
After a brilliant career highlighted by having led the 1st Jungle Infantry Battalion in Manaus
and the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Amazon Military Command
Villas Bôas was promoted to Army General in July 2011
he became the head of the Army’s Land Operations Command and was among those responsible for planning the security and defense of the 2014 FIFA World Cup
These structural changes will create the conditions needed for SISFRON
and the rest of the Army’s seven strategic projects to be successful in developing new skills needed by the Land Force
the Brazilian Army is a large reserve of civic and moral values dear to our evolving society
the biggest challenge is directly related to the preservation of these values
so that it can fulfill its constitutional mission while retaining full operational capability
LAAD is successful in disseminating the activities of the Land Force
especially those linked to the Army Strategic Projects
It shows society and the defense industry what is being produced within our institution
LAAD 2015 is also a forum devoted to discussions and presentations by the world’s most prestigious companies and organizations in the industry
It will certainly provide the Industrial Base of National Defense the opportunity to show the Brazilian Armed Forces its advances and technological innovations
It is undoubtedly an excellent time to interact with various countries and enable Brazilian society to deepen its knowledge of defense products and the strategic interests of Brazil
LAAD promotes the exploration of defense products and materials; strengthens the relationship between the Army and the Defense Industrial Base (DIB); and allows for better interaction between the Army’s Strategic Projects and potential goods and services suppliers
The Land Force members’ excellent preparation and modern equipment and doctrine
combined with the strong leadership of unit commanders at all levels ensures compliance with LOE missions assigned to the Brazilian Army
The results of the Brazilian Army’s action in the communities of Penha and Alemão were very positive
as shown by the statistics provided by the Public Security Institute of Rio de Janeiro
according to which there was a decrease by about 9 percent in the murder rate (with intent to kill)
a reduction of about 20 percent in the incidence of bus robberies
and a 44 percent decrease in auto thefts in the region
the Pacification Force has achieved significant success
with over 65,000 actions undertaken by the Pacification Force
224 arrests of minors committing illegal acts
which has been in operation for almost a year
demonstrating the public’s support for the work done by the military
All these arrests and results provide an increased sense of security with indirect improvement in the quality of life of that region’s residents
The Military World Games were held in Brazil with the participation of around foreign and Brazilian 6,000 high-performance athletes from more than 100 countries
and it consolidated the image of Brazil and the city of Rio de Janeiro as centers capable of handling major international sporting events
Regarding the participation of the Brazilian Army in security actions for the 2014 FIFA World Cup
we can say that those actions were extremely positive for the maintenance of public confidence in our Armed Forces
In addition to contributing significantly to the event’s safety
deploying the Army in defense actions and in support of public safety left a significant legacy
Of note is the improvement in the Army’s interagency relations with other military branches
as well as other government organizations and agencies involved in the security of the World Cup
The Army employed around 36,000 men and women in pre-established pivotal areas within the security plan
we can assume that the World Cup represented the highlight of the Army’s participation in major events
One must consider that all of this is intended to contribute to the effort promoted by the Brazilian Army in the search for a troop of employment doctrine on peacekeeping missions
to represent our country in peacekeeping missions is considered a great honor among our Soldiers
There is no denying the success of Brazilian troops in carrying out their missions
the Brazilian Army has historically maintained excellent relations in the military aspect
The Institution prioritizes the cooperation with that friendly nation due to the opportunities it offers in the doctrine and science & technology areas
and because it is a prominent player in the continental and global security arenas
agreements between the two countries are discussed in annual bilateral meetings
* SISFRON: Integrated Border Monitoring System
PROTEGER: Strategic Land Structure Protection System
DEFESA CIBERNÉTICA: Computer Defense System
ASTROS 2020: Rocket and missile launch battery system
HOW WILL THAT BE IF THE MILITARY HAS AN OUTDATED SALARY SCALE
Paulo’s commentary in the link below leaves uncertainty about the side our Armed Forces are on with regard to the clear and evident implantation of Bolivarian communism by the Worker’s Party (PT); is it the side of the people of democracy
The Mary Medina building sits empty and covered with graffiti
The Mariposa Apartment complex is set to undergo renovations starting in December
located on the corner of Gusdorf Road and Cruz Alta Road
The building is heavily covered in graffiti and the town is looking for it to be demolished
The town council discusses affordable housing options with Mark Yaravitz (bottom right) at the council meeting Tuesday (April 28)
The town of Taos council discussed different aspects of four separate
current or future housing complexes in Tuesday's online council meeting (April 27)
is set to acquire the Mariposa Apartments in hopes of renovating them
constructing additional units and preserving the USDA-RD rental assistance program
They came before the town council to seek a letter of support in order to move forward with their application
the Mariposa Apartment complex on Mariposa Place has 52 units
but Chelsea Investment Corporation plans to add six additional units - all three-bed
two-bathroom units - for a total of 58 apartments on the property
They also hope to renovate the existing units
They also vowed to maintain the neat exterior of the apartments
and stay consistent with the design of the surrounding neighborhoods
Chelsea said the project will be primarily funded by tax credits for affordable housing
with a preference for active and retired military
The council voted unanimously to approve the letter
with an additional resolution on the table for the next council meeting
Renovations are expected to begin in December of 2021
Local developer Mark Yaravitz came before the council to present his proposal for an 81-lot subdivision off of the southwest side of Salazar Road
near the "gravel pit," or the frisbee golf course
Yaravitz explained the project is aimed at providing first-time homeowners with a more affordable opportunity than can usually be found in the area
Yaravitz said he requested the council's support for participation in certain elements
as well as grant Public Improvement District status
He explained the development was designed to maximize the number of lots
and added that "we haven't scrimped on the open space."
He said the development will consist of 1,200-square-foot houses
each with three bedrooms and two bathrooms
with the option of adding a fourth bedroom
There are two floor plans which could be reversed for a total of four different floor plans
The homes are designed to be owner-occupied
and Yaravitz said there is incentive to stay in the homes due to a second or third "soft mortgage," which would discount the amount by $35,000 if the owner stays for 10 years
Yaravitz said the going rate for the homes will be $295,000
which he said is $80,000 less than current market value
he said the approximate monthly rate for the homes would be $1,395 a month for a 30-year mortgage
He estimated the project could take four to eight years to complete
and it would likely be done in four phases
There was some questioning from councilman Darien Fernandez about the feasibility for adding additional units in order to bring the price down
but Yaravitz quickly said he had thought it through and concluded a quarter of an acre was the smallest lot size he wanted
He explained that a household earning $50,000 a year could easily afford the mortgage payments
and said he foresees the homes being attractive for "firemen
"We have to stop the exit of our young families and the brain drain," Yaravitz wrote in the development proposal
The council voted unanimously to endorse the project going forward
The Chamisa Verde development plans were originally unveiled in 1995
but it has hit several stumbling blocks over the past decades
After being held up in the late 2000s after being looked into by the Mortgage and Finance Authority and then state auditor Hector Balderas for potential violations during the first phase of the project
the development might now start to move forward
which is located off Paseo del Cañon between the Loma Parda apartment complex and Gutters Bowling Alley
so it comes before the council to come up with a request for proposal (RFP) from private developers
The town will then collect some portion of return on their investment
Town of Taos manager Rick Bellis explained they have had five lawyers working on "clearing up the problems from decades ago," and they are finally ready to move forward
He described the vision for Chamisa Verde's second phase as a mixed use/mixed income housing community that would consist of full self-sufficient neighborhoods
including neighborhood stores and a live/work scenario
The town must first develop a request for quotation (RFQ) in order to make sure the firm that gets the contract "has done something so the project doesn't look like a prison," then follow up with an RFP to actually build out the project
The council voted unanimously to start working on drafting and RFQ and RFP
The Mary Medina building sits on the corner of Gusdorf Road and Cruz Alta Road and has been vacant since the mid-2000s
The building was given to the town of Taos after an agreement was approved between the town and the General Services Department in 2010
Bellis made a presentation to the council and discussed that they are seeking an RFP for the demolition of the building and the transformation of the space into affordable housing units
The building was originally included in the RFP for what is now the Ochenta Apartment Complex
a property built by Steve Crozier of Tierra Realty
who also constructed Tierra Montosa and Loma Parda
Bellis suggested that perhaps Crozier would be interested in bidding again
and said the original proposal included a "low density plan with gardens and playgrounds
Bellis explained the demolition and buildout of the complex will likely use public money for the project
and that it will most likely require them to find a public subsidy to underwrite it
Mayor Daniel Barrone questioned if the town had the funds for demolition
to which Bellis responded there was approximately $250,000 that was set aside for an art space that was never agreed on that could be put toward the project
The council voted unanimously a fourth time to go ahead with drafting an RFP
Bellis stated at the end that all four projects were only possible to undertake due to the public private partnerships that have been established
as well as future help from the North Central New Mexico Economic Development District

Argentine health authorities admitted that the first case of autochthonous dengue fever has been detected in the country
specifically in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) and more precisely in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA) Balvanera district
according to the latest issue of the Health Ministry's Epidemiological Bulletin
This conformation was added to the ones in Mendoza
a total of six cases of dengue fever in patients without a travel history was confirmed last week
”Cases without travel history were added in the provinces of Córdoba (2 cases in SE42 with identification of DEN-1)
Mendoza (1 case in SE42 without identification of serotype)
Tucumán (1 case confirmed in SE43 by the reference laboratory
with residence in the department of Cruz Alta and detection of neutralizing antibodies for DEN-1)
CABA (1 case in SE43 with residence in Commune 3 and identification of DEN-1) and Buenos Aires (1 case in SE43 attended in CABA
with residence in the district of La Matanza and identification of DEN-1), the document read
All cases detected in Buenos Aires belonged to serotype DEN-1
the variation most widely spread nationwide
measures were taken to up vaccination schemes and prevent the spread of the vectoring Aedes aegypti mosquito
5 imported cases were confirmed: 2 residents in Buenos Aires (1 with a history of travel to Brazil and Cuba); 1 case resident in Córdoba (with a history of travel to Cuba and identification of serotype DEN-4); 1 case resident in CABA (with a history of travel to India and without identification of serotype); 1 case corresponding to the province of Mendoza (with travel to Peru
3 cases were confirmed in transplant patients and 1 with a recent history of vaccination against dengue,” the bulletin mentioned
The Ministry's report also stated that between week 1 and week 43 of 2024
a total of 579,433 cases of dengue fever were recorded
The 2024/2025 season started in week 31 of this year and

the faithful of Brazil have lost two good pastors
both took their cue from the Gospel passage of Lk 4:18
because their mission consisted in "proclaiming the Gospel to the poor."
Pope Francis always reminds all that bishops must share the life
he learned of the Salesians of Don Bosco from an early age
He made his first religious profession on January 31
he was Provincial Vicar in the Brazil-Porto Alegre Province (1963-1975) and Provincial for the Brazil-Recife Province (1976- 1982)
He was appointed and ordained bishop of Ji-Paraná in 1983
choosing as his episcopal motto the phrase: "The Lord has anointed me to evangelize the poor." A motto that he incarnated with his life and that also caused him various conflicts and annoyances
In his episcopal ministry he encouraged the birth of hundreds of baseline ecclesial communities
promoted the birth of a school of faith and politics for the laity and was committed to stimulating an organized and dynamic pastoral care with all
He also held various positions in the Brazilian Episcopal Conference - Northern Region 1
After the renunciation due to age limitation
he resided in the "St John Bosco" community of Porto Velho
Frederick Heimler was originally from Unterlammerthal
He was ordained priest on 12 June 1970 and ordained bishop on 31 January 1999
His episcopal motto was: "The Spirit of the Lord is above me
for this He has anointed me to evangelize the poor." First appointed bishop coadjutor of Umuarama
he assumed the leadership of the diocese of Cruz Alta on June 16
As a bishop he has always worked for the unity of the Catholic Church
together with his skills as educator and administrator accumulated over the years
were decisive for increasing the pastoral and administrative care of the diocese
Pope Francis accepted his resignation from the government of the diocese on 11 June 2014
The human journey of the third bishop of Cruz Alta was marked by simplicity

The 13 best places to visit in Europe in 2023Gallery13 SlidesBy Toby Skinner and Lizzie PookView SlideshowEl Hierro knows a thing or two about social distancing. For most of its history, communications with the outside world have been precarious at best. In times of drought or pestilence, waves of emigration headed not for the Spanish mainland, but for Cuba and Venezuela (from whence many descendants of those emigrés have now returned)
La FronteraGetty ImagesThe island is almost more remarkable for what it doesn't have than for what it has. With a population of just 11,000 on a surface area half the size of Ibiza
there is very little traffic and development is thin on the ground
Herreños will tell you proudly that their island has no hotel complexes
no lifts and only one set of traffic lights
With few beaches as such (though a series of tidal pools
it missed out on the tourist boom of the 1970s that transformed the larger Canaries
with the result that its mesmerising natural beauty remains intact
since 2018 the island has been almost entirely self-sufficient in renewable energy
thanks to a combination of wind and hydroelectric power
The island's pristine waters are part of a marine reserve
The best plan is to hire a car and explore: El Hierro lends itself to carefree wandering
One of the best of the island's great drives is also the most hair-raising
It takes you west out of La Frontera on a crazily twisting country road across the dark tumble of a lava field
past the black-sand beach of Verodal towards Orchilla
where the stone tower of the lighthouse blinking into the Atlantic reminds you that until 1492
when Columbus found there was a lot more world out there
ValverdeGetty ImagesGetting to El Hierro is easy enough, but arriving has the thrill of a proper adventure. The regular flight from Tenerife
on a turboprop plane with burgundy leather seats
lands at the island's tiny airport after a white-knuckle approach that sees the little plane practically skimming the ocean
The island's capital Valverde (population 1,800), a scatter of houses with a colonial church in white paint and black stone, feels like a country village where everyone knows everyone and folk stop in the street to enquire about each other's health. In the cafés on the main street, the TVs broadcast the Spanish national news from distant Madrid – half a world away
such prettiness as there is clings tenaciously to a landscape that is often harsh
are like balconies hung with flowers in splashy tropical colours
the blue immensity of the Atlantic stretching away far below
handkerchief-sized plots hold stunted fruit trees
or scraps of pasture where grizzled shepherds keep watch over flocks of tough-looking sheep
EL PinarGetty ImagesEl Hierro is often compared to Formentera
But Formentera wishes it had these awe-inspiring landscapes – and this few people to enjoy them
Each of the three arms of the island's rough-cut shape has an excursion worth making
centuries old and a symbol of the island's resilience
the little harbour town of La Restinga – reached by a switchback road through desert scrub and wind-blown cacti – is a charming
seaside enclave where you wouldn't imagine anything dramatic has ever occurred
about the scary days in October 2011 when an undersea volcano erupted two miles offshore from La Restinga
bringing the economic life of the island to a grinding halt
has El Hierro’s most astonishing natural feature
The old road from Valverde to El Golfo takes you through forests of pine and laurel drifting with skeins of Atlantic mist
Minutes later you're peering over the edge of an enormous cliff-face
the result of a volcanic land-slip millions of years ago
running like a great dark wall along the spine of the island
Cowering in its shadow lies the coastal plain of La Frontera
where delicious pineapples are grown and richly flavoured wines made from grape varieties found nowhere else on earth
Getty ImagesStrung out in a straggle of white buildings along a single avenue
La Frontera itself is a jolly little town well-provided with bars and bakeries
and a weekly market where pony-tailed German hippy retirees sell homemade bread and second-hand clothes
The town would make a good holiday base camp: the coast of La Frontera has some of the loveliest charcos and passes for the island's visitor hub
The hotelito has just reopened as a boutique lodging whose surprisingly sleek interior contrasts with the fierce Atlantic scenery beyond the plate-glass windows
Two talented chefs work the kitchen here – one Basque
the other Italian – producing what is certainly the island's most interesting creative cooking
El Hierro is prodigal in fine raw materials
but the local culinary scene still needs to sort itself out
It's only a matter of time before some clever young Herreño cook starts doing interesting things with the excellent local lamb and beef
you're better off in village bars and eating-houses than in the handful of restaurants making a pretence at highbrow cuisine
it’s the simplest things about this end-of-the-line island that linger in the memory
A good long look at the staggering view from the Mirador de la Peña
A morning hike in the misty woods of La Llanía
a glass of cold Frontera white beside a deep-blue ocean pool as you watch the sun descend beyond the limits of the Western world
If ‘less is more’ might be the watchword for post-coronavirus travel

De Cruz skipped his Swiss team to yet another third-place finish Sunday afternoon
with an 8-4 win over Japan’s Yuta Matsumura
That gives him three world championship bronze medals (also 2014 and 2017) as well as an Olympic bronze medal in 2018
He has also won two bronze medals at the European curling championship
His only medal of a different colour came at the 2015 Europeans
“It’s really good to be able to leave here with a medal around the neck
but mixed feelings because we thought maybe we were in the top two teams and could win gold.”
De Cruz came so close to getting to the gold medal game
playing a terrific semifinal against Canada’s Kevin Koe on Saturday night
third Sven Michel and lead Valentin Tanner
outplayed the Canadians for much of the game

“We had one or two opportunities and we took a few
But they played great and took a lot of our opportunities away
“We thought that maybe we deserved a bit better Saturday
It has been an outstanding year for Swiss curling
as Silvana Tirinzoni won the world women’s curling title last month in Denmark
Team Japan left Lethbridge without a medal but there was little room for disappointment after the unheralded team performed so well at these worlds
Matsumura’s team went 9-3 in the round robin
won a playoff game and eventually lost the bronze medal game to Switzerland
“I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t come out with the ‘W’ today because I thought we deserved it,” Japanese coach Bob Ursel said
It was a great performance all week by these young kids and they’ve got a bright future ahead of them.”
Attendance for this year’s event in Lethbridge was 69,077
The crowds were boisterous and appreciative all week — enjoying every minute of having an Alberta team (Kevin Koe) representing Canada — even though the building was never sold out
The largest crowd was for Sunday night’s gold medal game between Canada and Sweden
The attendance numbers for the event are certainly in line with what we saw in Sydney
for the Tournament of Hearts (46,796) and for the Brier in Brandon (75,617)
For the past 60 years — the entire life span of the world curling championships — someone named Michael Burns has been an official photographer of the sport
first covered the Scotch Cup in Edinburgh and it continues today with Michael Burns
covering the world men’s curling championship
it was a 14-hour flight from Toronto to Scotland,” the younger Burns said
It was ever-so fitting on Saturday when Burns was on hand for his late father’s induction into the World Curling Hall of Fame
“I was pretty shocked,” the well-known Toronto photographer said
“It kinda came out of left field and nobody even indicated that he had even been nominated
shooting national and international events for Curling Canada and occasionally the World Curling Federation
He’s also been an award-winning photographer for many years at the Woodbine Racetrack in Etobicoke
did that job as well and is in the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame
the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame and the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame
“He was already in three halls of fame so that spoke volumes of who he was as a photographer,” Burns said
“Never in a million years did we ever think about this
used to travel with her husband to events around the world and his induction into the Hall of Fame is very special for her
“This is more for my mom than anything,” he said
Burns believes he can speak for his father in saying they both had one of the best jobs in the world
you get to work with great people all over the world.”
Also inducted into the World Curling Hall of Fame this year were 11-time world curling championship medallist (two gold) Dordi Nordby of Norway and Scotland’s Mike Thomson
who was the first secretary general of the World Curling Federation

falls off or stops working properly after regular use
We continually test strollers and add results to our database
